Administration about the evergrowing v. A. Scandal. So are there finally signs the white house may be stepping in to help . Gretchen carlson here. The real story for tuesday. The big question today is, when are we going to hear from the president on this issue . Political pressure building for some sort of white house response to the ongoing nightmare at the v. A. Involving patient care and what appears to be dozens of preventable deaths. Today the president s chief of staff, Dennis Mcdonagh said this clearly the chief of staff reiterated all the information that the department has been doing and congress has been providing for our veterans, made it very clear that the administration is going to get to the bottom of this and going to address it dramatically. Kirsten powers is a columnist for usa today, larry oconnor, radio host in washington, d. C. Kirst kirsten, theyre going to get to the bottom of it and its going to happen right now and its going to be dramatic. Really . Yeah. Look, i dont have a good explanation for why the president hasnt spoken on this when it first broke and people are saying, wheres the president . I said, im sure hes going to come out and say something. This is an issue thats been a primary focus for the first lady and joe biden and the president have focused on saying they were concerned about the veterans. Even specifically the v. A. Hospital. I think he should speak out. I understand the desire to get all the facts and do the investigation. But i also think that this is a really big issue that he needs to needs to be heard on. And theres a big difference between allocation and facts. We now have these memos and information and facts, by the way, about what the heck has been going on at more than 19 v. A. Medical centers in 19 states. Yeah, jay carney just moments ago keeps calling it allegations, larry. Thats right. And we have whistleblowers who have spoken out on the record. I dont understand the desire to do something dramatic. Is this real housewives of atlanta . These are vets that were talking about. They need care. Why are republicans waiting for the president to speak on this . They have the majority in the house of representatives. They should be making the case for privatizing the v. A. Why are they stuck in this bureaucratic mess of a Health Care System . We should have a privatized version of the v. A. To get them good care. And hearings are supposedly coming up. Weve seen what happens with hearings regarding benghazi and the irs. Theyre all good. But the fact of the matter is, were left with unanswered questions. Kirsten, to larrys point, vets are dying. What needs to happen here to fix this . Its in the just that theyre do you go. Weve known that they havent been getting very good care and that there have been there are a lot of vets who have come back who have posttraumatic stress disorder who are left waiting for a year or more to get treatment. Thats a serious issue, to leave somebody to live with where they cant get basic medication. Its inhumane. And considering what theyve sacrificed for the country is unbelievable. And its been going on for a very long time. This is not just the obama administration, although there was that information yesterday that they were told in a transition period in 2008 that the secret waiting lists were already in existence then and apparently not much happened. Got to wrap it there, guys. Thank you so much. Well be back in touch with you very soon. The American Legion getting its hands on the new v. A. Memo which reveals scheduling problems that date back years. In april of 2010, the deputy secretary for health for operations and management, this is what was written it has come to my attention that in order to improve scores on assorted access measure, certain facilities have adopted use of inappropriate scheduling practices sometimes referred to as gaming strategies. He calls for immediate action to eliminate it. This was 2010, folks. Jessie jane duff is retired from the marine corps and joins me now. I can only imagine how angry you are about this. Im so angry about this. Talking about four years ago that they were talking about gaming strategies. And you say . Im looking at that memo and i thought to myself, youve got to be kidding me. They said, it will not be tolerated. Obviously these executives decided, were going to hide it, camouflage it. The v. A. Was well aware of this. And even during eric shinsekis testimony, it was revealed that they were trying to eradicate it. Theyre aware of this corruption . Yet in 2012, every single executive got a satisfactory rating performance rating except one. So you realize that youre a culture of corruption and youve been giving out bonuses and rewarding these executives time and time again . Its outrageous. I want to read another part of that memo from april 26th, 2010. Heres an example. As a way to combat missed opportunity rates, some medical centers cancel appointments for patients not checked in 10 or 15 minutes prior to their scheduled appointment time. Are you serious, jessie . If you came to the v. A. Hospital and you didnt check in its like youre getting on a flight. You didnt check in 10 to 15 minutes before your appointment, they canceled you . Door shut, youre locked out. 1. 5 million records. We dont even know what happened to those veterans or if they exist. So im appalled we dont give them the care and they show up and theyre eradicated from the system like that. I have to bring your attention to another thing thats just crossing right now. Senator john cornyn is calling on president obama to withdraw his nominee for that position of robert petzel. He resigned last friday even though he was already going to retire. Apparently the new nominee, jeffrey morowski was apparently in charge of the woman, Sharon Helman who was in charge of the phoenix v. A. Where this whole thing started. John cornyn says, we need a fresh approach, not someone already in the system. What do you think about that . Is the president throwing gasoline on the fire . Youre going to nominee someone from the very facility thats made everyone as mad as hell . I think theyre as mad as hell that theyve been caught. Why would you nominate someone from a place that has a secret list and 40 dead veterans . It doesnt make any logical sense. Well continue to cover this. I know you are as well. Jessie jane, thanks for your time. Right now, the pentagon preparing for a possible evacuation of the u. S. Embassy in libya. Amid a resurgence of violence in tripoli. The u. S. New developments in the criminal investigation into that dramatic bus crash over the weekend where the vehicle was left dangling literally over the massachusetts turnpike. Police now say the bus driver had a cell phone in her hand at the time of the accident. She initially told investigators that sneezing caused her to close her eyes and lose control of the bus prior to the crash. In a followup interview, though, she came clean about the phone but she was still hit with an obstruction of justice charge and several moving violations. In the meantime, new fallout now as the white house designates nearly 500,000 acres of land thats going to be our next National Monument. President obama planning to use his executive power to create Oregon Mountain Desert Peaks National monument in new mexico. The Administration Says it will pump millions of dollars into the economy and create jobs. But some who live in the area worry the federal government is overstepping its boundaries. Stephen joins us now. What are you writing with regard to this story . The issue is the president is going to make this the next National Monument. The declaration comes tomorrow. Everybody agrees theres pristine property there. Everybody locally and apparently across the country environmentalists agree on that. What they dont agree on is how much should be put under protection . And in particular, ranchers are worried if it goes under heightened protection, theyll lose grazing right that is theyve had as many as ten generations back in their families. More important is the Border Security experts and the local sheriff who says once you do this protection, hes not going to be able to get access to some of the roads that are there right now. Hes not going to be able to patrol the area. And its right along the border that creates a criminal corridor for the mexican drug cartels to exploit. Its an issue of how much to give and how much area to put under the protection. Does it have anything to do with trying to appease environmentalists . Absolutely. The environmentalist community has been pushing for this for years. Goes back at least ten years theyve been looking for this. Whats interesting about this is, its an executive action by the president. He said he was going to do an executive action when congress wouldnt act. The republican who represents that area in the house wanted only 50,000 acres to be protected. The two Democratic Senators from that state wanted all 500,000 acres be protected. Basically they couldnt agree. So the president steps in. But he sides with the democrats rather than letting the local government work it out. He sided with the democrats and is doing this broad declaration. Thats why the ranchers are upset. Yes. We have heard from the critics who dont want it to happen. The administration is saying, look, this is great land that we need to preserve, number one. And number two, say they its going to help the economy and create jobs. Is that the case . Absolutely. We have an example, about 20 years, president clinton did a similar declaration, much bigger, actually, in southeastern utah where he declared a National Monument i was just there a month ago. Its pristine, spectacular, great hiking. And it helped the economy. The question is whether its helped the economy more than coal mining would have. In this case, we dont know what will happen whether this will help the economy more than the ranching community. But it will absolutely become a great environmental playground. Beautiful pictures. Stephen, thanks so much for writing about it. A pair of near misses causing a big scare in the skies. The latest involved planes, guess what . They were annual 50 feet apart. Were learning about a frightening near miss now at newarks liberty airport. The ntsb saying the jets were just 50 yards apart last month as one of them was taking off and the other landing on intersecting runways. They were supposed to be two miles apart from each other. Couple that with an incident we told you about last week where two jets nearly collided north of hawaii while flying at altitudes erroneously assigned to them by air Traffic Controllers. One of those jets plunging 600 feet in just 60 seconds to avoid the other plane. The question today is, why so many close calls and should we all be concerned . Sal is an aviation attorney, a judge and an aviations law professor. Lets take the newark incident. 50 yards apart from each other . Thats a stones throw away. What was going on . The ntsb says it was 400 yards on the vertical. But its really hard to tell what was going on. Looks like the controllers did just the right thing. They had an aircraft land and put the regional jet that ended up being the one going to memphis onto the runway and had it ready for takeoff. Once that plane crossed the intersection, they started that airplane off for takeoff. But it didnt right away. It should have. If it had to be delayed for some reason, the pilot should have called back to the tower and said, i have a problem, i need to delay for a little bit. Weve all been in those situations where were waiting and the pilot comes on and says, were number ten for takeoff. Then you wait. You can see the planes coming in. And you know, you can cross and you can go. So what happened here in the sense that or what could have happened is the better question . You have a bigger plane that was coming down. Right, you had a 737 landing. You another regional jet all the way on the other side on runway 4 right. When it was given clearance to land, the 737 was still three miles away. That would have given them plenty of clearance. Unfortunately they delayed their takeoff roll. Rolled far down the runway. Regional jet doesnt require too much runway. The air Traffic Controller looked out the window, saw there was a conflict, he called for the 737 to go around, which it did. Unfortunately it takes a while to get that airplane back flying. And the other plane flew about 40 or 50 feet below it. Apparently the express jet knew to avoid the situation. My question is, since im a whiteknuckler, should we be worried . You shouldnt be. Im a pilot. I fly all the time. A lot of these things have duplicate systems built into them. Redundancy is everything in flying. Same thing with the hawaii situation. We have a system that tells the pilots without air Traffic Control getting involved at all that theyre on a collision course with another airplane and to take the appropriate action 60 seconds to go 600 feet, really not that bad of a dive. A little more exaggeration youre a pilot. That to me is a big dive. Sal, thanks for explaining it all. We have breaking news right now. Speaker john boehner and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi just wrapped up that meeting we told you about at the top of the show about benghazi. Pelosi seen here quickly leaving the scene. What happened in that meeting . Well tell you coming up. And as voters head to the polls in key primaries across the country, a prominent member of the gop says his party needs a new game plan and he has the plan. Rick santorum will be here live to lay it all out. Plus, new reaction from the white house on the growing v. A. Scandal. But when will the American People be hearing from the president himself . Hes mad as hell at hearing of the youll hear from him at some point on this issue soon. How soon is soon . Were live with that story. Plus, a popular fastfood chain asking customers to leave something at home. What that item is next. Fox news alert for you now. Brandnew reaction from house Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. We just wrapped up an hourlong meeting with john boehner. The two discussing the possibility of democrats participating in the select committee on benghazi. So far, still no decision. Heres leader pelosi as she left that meeting. The speaker respond favorably to some of your requests you know what . You dont expect im going to tell you anything right now . Were trying, yeah. Weve always tried to get something done. So pelosi not wanting to give any comments saying she wants to speaks to members of her party before telling reporters what the decision will be on benghazi. Well keep you posted here on fox. In the meantime, a host of new developments in the v. A. Scandal from that memo about concealing wait times to when we will actually hear from the president about this growing controversy. It all came up at the house briefing which wrapped up a short time ago. Chief white house correspondent, ed henry joins us. How has the pressure intensified on the white house . Youre hearing more and more democrats express outrage about this. Today, white house chief of staff Denis Mcdonough talked about the defense bill. Lawmakers pressed him on the v. A. Scandal. Denis mcdonough were told promised something dramatic will be coming from the white house in the days ahead. Will it be legislation . A reform plan . Will the president finally speak out . Hes not spoken out on this scandal since april 28th when i asked him at a News Conference and when i mentioned democrats, tammy duckworth, a wounded veteran herself, who used to serve at the v. A. Earlier in this administration, told the washington post, quote, mrs. Obamas done so much, mrs. Bidens done so much and i see that as part of the president s push but added, i think hes relied on secretary shinseki. But we could use his personal attention at this point. Thats coming from a democrat you c echoing similar things weve heard from people like eric cantor. Listen. It is time for our president to come forward and take responsibility for this and do the right thing by these veterans and begin to show that he actually cares about getting it straight. Jay carney would not explain more of what he said yesterday about when he said the president will talk about all this soon. But obviously with memorial day coming up this weekend, he traditionally goes to Arlington Cemetery on monday. A lot of speculation he may address it there. Interesting. So i know that you pressed jay carney on that memo we reported about at the top of the show. The memo from 2010 showing the v. A. Knew about some of these problems. What did you ask jay . We pressed him on your point, which is that, look, jay carney at the podium day after day said these are just allegations. And it has to be investigated. This memo youre reporting on was from 2010, a v. A. Official acknowledging inside the department that some of these credit waiting lists and the like were going on. That was four years ago. Now, the white house just revealed that theyre sending people to phoenix, trying to deal with this and all of that, rob nabors, the white house aide overseeing the v. A. Review, is going to phoenix on wednesday night to try to get to the bottom of it. I pressed jay carney on why that didnt happen sooner. Listen. Four years ago they were saying its not just allegations, but a top v. A. Official determined this was going on and they had to immediately take care of it. Will you admit at least that its not all allegations, that in fact some of this has happened . The v. A. Said it. Again, i have made clear some of the allegations that have emerged in these reports including the most sensational ones are under investigation and well wait to see the results of that. I think its an important place to start that no one in this building or anywhere else in the administration, including over at the v. A. , holds the position that all the challenges that the v. A. Were confronting in 2008 and 2009 have been solved. Far from it. What about rob nabors in 2010 and 2011 . This is under investigation. It was going on four years ago talking about an internal v. A. Memo. I would refer you to the v. A. About their internal memos. Obviously the v. A. Headed by secretary shinseki. Hes been under fire. But for now, white house still showing full confidence in him. Very interesting. Ed, thanks so much. Joining us for more reaction on the white house handling of the v. A. Scandal, the author of bluecollar conservatives, recommitting to an america that works, rick santorum. Great to see you. Im listening to the v. A. Scandal unfolding and getting more serious day by day. Your reaction to the president not reacting yet . Well, i think thats inexcusable. The president if theres one thing the president is pretty good at is immediately responding to an issue that has caught the eye of the american public. Sometimes even without all the facts, hes very quick to jump in if its an area of a sweet spot politically for him. Here, this must not be such a sweet spot because hes been remarkably silent. And given the profound nature of this and the suspicion is that not just waiting lists but the care generally at the veterans administration. This is a serious problem. I know a lot about it. My mom and dad worked for the v. A. For 40 years each. I can tell you that this has been a continuing problem that is just not getting any better. And we really do need to draw some attention to it and do things differently than we have in the past. Jay carney is repeatedly pressed on this day after day. And the one answer that he seems to give that maybe he thought the story would go away from is that, well, the president has thrown more money to the v. A. And you would say what . Yeah, i would say it sounds like obamacare. All we have to do is throw more money at a Health Care Problem and somehow were going to fix it. The answer the democrats have on everything which is whether you care or not, its how much money you throw at it. Of course we know whether its an educational or health care or whole host of other things, its not how much money you throw at it. Its the way you design things. Its the way you execute things. Its not just about money. If money were to solve every problem, we wouldnt have the big businesses who spend all the money would be making money and the small guys who are out there working and pinching pennies would be losing. Thats not the way it is in america. We need innovation. We need good leadership. We havent had that in the v. A. For a long time. And in my opinion, its one of the reasons that we have the problems we have today. In the meantime, you are calling on the gop to recognize the shifting trends in american politics and to, frankly, set a new course. Lets take a look at some of the polls together. These were conducted this year for the wall street journal nbc. Half of those who identified themselves as republican had family incomes below 75,000 a year. And last month, White Working Class voters identified themselves as republicans than democrats by a margin of 37 to 35 . This is what youre writing about in your book, right . Yeah. Theres a realignment going on in this country. I think a lot of republicans are tone deaf to it. The reason i wrote this book is i felt like i tapped into that a little bit in the 2012 campaign. We were running against someone who was outspending me 7 to 1. And yet we held our own. We were doing well with blue collar voters not swayed by the big tv ads. And we had a message that said we want to make sure that the 70 of americans who dont graduate from college have an opportunity to live the american dream. We talked about the importance of energy and manufacturing and apprentice programs and training i remember. Those are the things that people say, how did he do well . We talk to who the republicans are today. The reality is that a lot of the higher income folks in the Corporate Board rooms are not republican anymore. Theyre not conservative anymore. And we keep trying to tract them instead of going to where the conservative voices are. So check out his new book. Great to see you. Thank you for your time. We have a fox news alert, petco pulling dog and cat treats made in china from its shelves. All Food Products made there will be pulled from all 1,300 Locations Nationwide and online by the end of 2014. The fda has warned jerky products could be linked to illnesses in animals. I know my vet and my dog trainer have told me to stay away from those chinesemade products. Time to check in with shepard smith. If you go to petco and they sell you something for you dog, you would think its not going to kill your dog. That should be a minimum. I know. I dont mean to laugh. But it sounds so obvious. Really does. Well have a followup on that in the next hour. This is 1,000 animals killed by a treat that you buy at the store and now finally we decide not to sell anything from china. And kurt busch all revved up to try something few other nascar drivers have ever done. Hes here to explain what the double challenge is and why hes giving it a go. Welcome back, everyone. Kurt busch doing the double this memorial day weekend. In just one day, hell be driving two different types of car. In two different states, indiana and north carolina, for two different types of races with a grand total of 1,100 miles. But hes only one guy. The double has been attempted only four other times before. And only three other drivers actually made it. Its not easy. And things got even a lot harder after kurt got off to a tricky start yesterday. Back stretch they go. Oh, crash, crash. Turn two, got a crash. A little dustup or something more . Kurt busch is my guest. Hes here with me now. When you see yourself crash like that, what do you think . It looks more spectacular on tv. But it was a rookie mistake. I dont know the indy cars all that well. Its a challenge to try to learn those cars at this pace. Just the other day i qualified at 230 miles per hour. And now i thought i was settling into race pace and that car came around on me. Your primary car is gone. What does that do for you strategy in trying to do this double challenge . Luckily, we have a couple of days for the team, andretti auto sport to prepare the backup. And well be ready for fridays onehour practice. On sunday, youre going to attempt to do this challenge called the double. Why . For me, its being a racer and trying to challenge myself. But also through all the challenges ive seen through our military. Memorial day weekend to me was always to watch the indy 500, the coke 600. Ive been part of the coke 600 for 15 years. But its a very patriotic time. And to give honor and respect to our military, ive been doing that through the Armed Forces Foundation and just meeting our men and women at walter reed and bethesda medical centers, the ptsd side of things, getting back into the society is a hard battle. And the foundation has given me the inspiration to work with these men and women. And when i feel like im getting behind in the race and need that drive from within, ill think of our military and all the freedom we enjoy as americans comes from a lot of sacrifice. Nobody could have said it any better. So your dedicating that race to the troops and specifically there are going to be three people there from the Armed Services who are going to be helping you out who youre dedicating it to . Thats right. Three members will be on my car. The ptsd side is a battle that we cannot see. Its a mental wound that we have to be there and support. All of the branches of military are part of the Armed Forces Foundations drive. To learn more, go to armedservicesfoundation. Org. Donate to be a part of this 1,100 miles on memorial day weekend. Will you know at a certain point when youre trying to do this double that youre going to be able to pull it off . Its a matter of completing all 1,100 miles. And the old cliche, to finish first, first you must finish. Its a matter of protecting the race car, trying to stay out of trouble. Im the most inexperienced at indy. Thats when ill be at my best. But the challenge of all this is to give my nascar team the contract that i have with them all that i can. 600 miles will be tough. Im up for the challenge. A lot of preparation. Tracking all my workouts. Going to be a lot of fun. We wish you all the best. I have a sneaking suspicion youre going to pull it off. Thank you. And all for our troops. Thank you so much. Absolutely.
