Wanted to vote would vote. Texas senator ted cruz edging out donald trump, who finished second, despite suggestions he had the evangelical vote. And marco rubio exceeding expectations and how with a very strong showing, finishing right on Donald Trumps heels. Mike huckabee has officially called it a night. On the democratic side, third place finisher Martin Omalley announced, like, huckabee, hes out. Well wait to see whether Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton finishes first we have a very big show, Charles Krauthammer is here, well be joined by bill burton and some are saying that targeting evangelicals and libertarians from the start of the race. Two of the most reliable iowa voting blocks here moments ago. God bless the great state of iowa. Tonight is a victory for the grass roots. Tonight is a victory for courageous conservatives across iowa and this great nation. Tonight the state of iowa has spoken. Joining us now, alice stewart, a Senior Communications advisor for the cruz president ial campaign, alice, congratulations how are you feeling tonight . Thank you, megyn. Its a tremendous night for conservatives across iowa and the country. The Cruz Campaign did not leave anything on the tracks time and voters came out and proved. That its a victory for millions of americans and those here in iowa. Theyre tired of washington as usual. Theyre tired of the washington cartel. Theyre tired of big government, dictating what goes on in this country and what ted cruz was able to do is galvanize conservative as cross iowa. This is an opportunity to show such a Republican Party is not uniting conservatives. What we saw traveling across the state over the past several months is that conservatives want to join together and stand behind a person who is a consistent conservative. He galvanized conservatives. Sorry. But he did not galvanize the moderates who went more for donald trump and marco rubio. What does that mean for ted cruz in New Hampshire . Were going to continue the message that we have had but what we certainly dont need to happen is for the republican pa party to nominate another moderate and lose when it comes time for the general election. So people in iowa saw they had someone they can believe would Say Something today on the campaign trail and when nominated president would actually do that. They needed someone they havent had in two cycles that had the organization and resources noft only to win here in the iowa caucus, but has a multi state strategy to do well in New Hampshire, South Carolina, nevada and all of the early states, all the way through super tuesday and secure the nomination. How did ted cruz do it . The ground game . What was it . First message. A messenger and a tremendous ground game. Hes been out here ten months. If youre to tell him ten months ago, no one would believe you because he had been attacked by other republicans but the establishment, but the republican elite in washington, d. C. And he stood up to them. And the ground game here in iowa is going together. We have also a tremendous volunteer, we had thousands of volunteers, megyn, 20,000 phone calls per day and our online voter outreach, targeting the message to the voters. It all pays dividends for ted cruz tonight. Thank you very much. We appreciate it. When turn out started surging a lot of folks thought it was first time trump voters showing up to hand a big victory to the new york businessman. Trump used a brief speech to say thank you for the support he did get. Iowa, thank you, we love you. Youre special. I think i may come here and buy a farm, we love it. Okay . Thank you, thank you everybody. Thank you. Thank you very much. Donald trump congratulating ted cruz in a gracious speech tonight. Lets go live now to Trumps Campaign headquarters in des moines and john roberts. John . Megyn, good evening to you. Donald trump doing whatever he can including wishing his daughter would have her baby here in iowa. Donald trump putting a brave face on the result, not saying witnesses a loss but declaring it a victory saying in june he was told by people closest to him dont bother going, theyll never warm up to a person like you. For him, he said it is a victory. But not the outcome he hoped for. He did want to win this. We started picking up signs it was after he skipped the debate thursday that late breakers would probably not going to go his way. We followed a bunch of door knockers around and found people who said i was for trump but now decided to go for cruz or i was for trump but decided to go for rubio. You know, i think rubios close finish really is an indication that you can have all of the fame and fortune in the world but Old Fashioned show ledger and hard work counts for a lot. He lost in iowa. Hes ahead in New Hampshire and South Carolina. Leads in nevada and florida. Hes looking back at history saying 2008, you chose Mike Huckabee. John mccain became nominee. 2012, santorum won, so hes hoping history repeats. With you bun thang youve got to watch in these elections is that sometimes momentum can take on a life of its own. And when you look at what marco rubio came out of iowa with and the steam hell have going into New Hampshire, the numbers could change, and change quickly. John roberts, thank you. Trump may have taken the number two spot tonight but the big story may be senator marco rubios third place finish less than six points behind the liter. Here is senator rubio just a short time ago. This is the moment they said would never happen. For months they told us we had no chance. For months they told us because we offered too much optimism in a time of anger we had no chance. For months they told us we didnt have the right endorsements or political corrections we had no chance. They told me we have no chance because my hair wasnt gray enough and my boots were too high. They told me i needed to wait my turn. That i needed to wait in line. But tonight, tonight, here in iowa, the people of the great state have sent a very clear message. After seven years of barack obama, were not waiting any longer to take our country back. Mike emmanuel is live in des moines, mike . It was a jubilant scene here at marco rubios headquarters for days wed be hearing whether there was marcomentum and they say it turned out to be true, saying the debate gave a chance to Show National audience what he was capable of doing and gave him more face time and they think that was a win for marco rubio and hurt donald trump with some of the latedeciding iowa caucus goers they think coming out this evening was a very up beat speech in front of a National Audience celebrating a strong third place finish, outperforming in iowa was huge for them. They think as other candidates leave the stage and it gets down to a few person race, it will be an opportunity for marco rubio to shine. It was boiling down between a two person race and they say it is a threeman race. And on to New Hampshire. Mike, thank you. Joining us now with more on Charles Krauthammer, author of the book things that matter. Charles your thoughts on what weve seen tonight. I think this was a major point in the campaign. Ted cruz was saying if donald trump won in iowa, hed probably win in New Hampshire and he would run the table. He wasnt only scaring the people in iowa, and trying to get to their support. I think he was absolutely right. I think had trump won it would have reenforced a sense of inevitability, remember, in june, everything hes done somehow was golden. And for instance hed say outrageous things and his numbers would go up. And this is the first time hes encountered defeat this, is a guy who says over and over again, im a winner, i dont lose. Ive never lost. Im not going to lose. And this punctures that. And i think it has go effects. One on the audience, one on the voters. People have been swept up in this and you go out to see a guy who isnt only entertaining but you think is going to be the nominee and perhaps the president. The second effect is probably more important, and that is the effect it has on the media and on the sense that we have to follow and listen to everything he says. Every time he raises an issue, every time he says something, every speech he gives, every rally, it covered as if its the word from heaven. And again, because of this sense, that this guy is a winner, that is going to have to change. There will be a lot of attention now to what cruz is saying and rubio is saying. But this is now a threeman race. There is no establishment lane. There is a Cruz Campaign, which is sort of austere conservatism, there is the trump campaign, and rubio, the main stream, more moderate conservative. That is what it is. Establishment, long establishment is irrelevant but the trump train has been interrupted but now its going to be a long slog. He tweeted out in june, no one remembers who came in second. Or vince lombardi. Winning isnt the main thing, its the only thing. That has been the trump message and now, its been punctured. What effect, if any, do you believe trump skipping the debate thursday night had . You just heard Mike Emmanuel saying marco rubios campaign is saying it was critical, giving marco rubio all of the oxygen he needed to cement that last minute surge. I think that is right. It had two effects. Without trump on the stage, and remember, throughout the campaign he dominates every news cycle no matter where he is, what he says. When hes off stage in a campaign debate, he abscends himself. If he had been in every debate, woe wipe out and diminish his opponent. He didnt show up, allowing others to shine and i thought it helped rubio, who obviously had twice as many late deciders as trump and the second reason is people said iowa is different. Iowa is special. We expect individual care and if you like, coddling by candidates. And this was the kind of a slap in the face of iowans who take their responsibility seriously. It is serious and requires a lot of ef yofrt and trump didnt. I think that cost him a few votes and he beat rubio only by one point. So talk about the fortunes of marco rubio now. We get updates in waves. He did better than trump when it came to voters who the economy was the biggest issue. This has always been trumps sweet spot. I think rubio is remarkably articulate. When he gets out there and makes the case, when he speaks about his own past, rising from his immigrant, the immigrant situation he grew up. And he had no prompter tonight. Then, he spins it into the story about the American Dream, american opportunity, then talks to some extent about the way hes going to do it, hes got a great story to tell. When it it get out there, i has an effect. So in a state like iowa, he put in a lot of effort that resonated. Trump opened it up and had the kids running around on his airplane yesterday. Its great showmanship. When they think about it seriously, at the caucus they have to make the case, he give speeches and listen, i think rubio message prevailed. And i think its sort of an encouraging sign that on ideas and being specific and not just talking about things in generalities, he can prevail, and he did. Ideas over celebrity. Ted cruz has got the winds back how far, he is the winner. And making the case that you need a constitutional conservative. Is he too conservative for New Hampshire or the states that are going to follow . Do you think the iowans sold ted cruz to the American Public . I think he is a hard line conservative. He and rubio have more in common than either of them have in terms of trump because they both argue trump is not a conservative and i think they are right. Between them, its a matter between rubio and cruz. A matter of tone and inclusiveness. Rubio is the main stream, softer one. Cruz has a harder edge. Which i think means that in a general election youre going to have a hard timer time. I have to go but i want you to weigh in on what we saw on the democratic side. I take the view that a win is a win is a win. Especially if Hillary Clinton, who had been humiliated eight years ago, doesnt lose if its by a whisker, if you win, its really different from having collapsed in the face of a socialist eight years after her humiliation in l. A. Shes going to win in New Hampshire and hanging over her is this uncertainty about whats happening in the fbi investigation. Which i think really hurts her. They worry about a shoe dropping and having no alternative if they nominate her. I this that i is hurting her as well. Given that, she needed a win and got the wine well, its too cles to call, officially. Well, assuming, look. If she loses, then it is a defeat for her, shes slightly ahead. She is. Having some of the other networks calling it on their projections. They have. Fox news does not. Were saying its too close to call. Im entertaining the possibility that others could be correct. It could be a radical idea but might be true. You take it up with the fox news decision desk and ask karl rove how that works out. Charles, great to see you. Sure, sure. What does team rubio have to say about tonights results . And why were his polls, the polls about him, so off . Hell tell us live in just just a moments. And stirewalt ant kurts will be ahead. New hampshire, well see you in the morning. Thank you, go now that karens taking osteo biflex, shes noticing a real difference in her joint comfort. Karen shes single. And high levels of humiliation in her daughter. In just 7 days, your joint comfort can be your kids discomfort. Osteo biflex. Made to move. We will apply all of the principles that made america great. It will say we lived in uncertain and difficult times but remembered who we were. We cop fronted our problems and solved them. Because we did, the American Dream didnt just survive but reached more people and changed more lives than ever before. Because we did, our children and grandchildren grew up to be the freest and most prosperous americans that ever lived because we did what needed to be done. The 21 century wasnt just as good as the 20th century but better and a new american century. That was a fired up senator marco rubio sharing a speech that ran roughly 15 minute was out notes or teleprompter. Maybe notes, but not a teleprompter. He celebrated a stronger than expected showing here in iowa. Alex conan is the director for the campaign and congratulations on your finish. How do you think you did it . It was a big night for us. We made marco front and center in this campaign. He had a ton of speaking time and people saw what hes offering the american people, his message that we can be, we can make the 21 century a new american century. That is what hes been doing every day on the campaign trail and here in iowa and it connected with voters. People want ideas and solutions. And dr. Krauthammer was saying they know we have challenges and want solutions. Voters responded here in iowa. What do you make of the fact that looking at the exit polls, or entrance polls, the voter whos decided over the last few days, went and broke for marco rubio, 29 . Ted cruz got 24 . Donald trump 14 . Nobody else put meaningful points on the board. How did he do that . What happened . He just put marco front and center. He tried to meet voters and talked to them and had a fantastic running game on the ground and hundreds and thousands of voter contracts. We knew who voters were and were the only state, excuse me, the only campaign that is organized in all 50 states. We dont expect this is going to end soon, were ready for the long haul. Were excited coming out of iowa with a lot of momentum. What do you expect is going to happen in New Hampshire . Trump is up 28 points there. Well, dr. Krauthammer says its a three person race now. Trump, rubio or cruz is going to be the nominee. So when we nominate marco rubio hes going to unite the Republican Party. The only candidate able to unite the Republican Party. Then, were going to beat Hillary Clinton. A lot of voters chose marco because they realized if you want to beat Hillary Clinton or want to beat Bernie Sanders the best way to do that is tomorrow nate marco rubio. What do you think this means for the other candidates ta finished poorly, jeb bush, john kasi kasich and the others . There is no way theyre going to be the republican nominees so good night for marco rubio and ted cruz. So so night for donald trump. Where do you think marco rubio needs to win . We want to be in the top tier. Its a three person race right now. We want to keep it that way. If we can finish in the top tier in New Hampshire, we feel good about South Carolina and going to have big announcements coming soon in South Carolina and other states. Youre going to start to see the party around marco rubio now that its clear its a threeperson race. Thank you very much. And not to ruin the surprise but its been reported one of the big endorsements is senator tim scott, very much sought after, he had been endorsing marco rubio in South Carolina. So team rubio celebrates a big finish, what about team trump . Guy benson is here next on that. If he winnished second and im honored and i want to congratulate ted and all of the candidates including Mike Huckabee who has become a really good friend of mine. Good friend of mine. Congratulations cell phone rings where are you . Well the squirrels are back in the attic. Mom . Your dad wont call an exterminator. Can i call you back, mom . He says its personal this time. If youre a mom, you call at the worst time. Its what you do. If you want to save fifteen percent or more on car insurance, you switch to geico. Its what you do. Where are you . Its very loud there. Are you taking a zumba class . Breaking tonight a stunning turn of events in iowa. Ted cruz proves to be the winner, donald trump coming in second, but just behind him, almost tied marco rubio. On the democratic side, there are still no winners. Hillary clinton and Bernie Sanders in a virtual tie. Mrs. Clinton telling supporters shes ready to press forward. Here is an interesting number that just came our way. The last 13 polls out of iowa show donald trump leading here. And yet, he did not win. Guy benson is the Political Editor of town hall. Com, roger stone a former political advisor to donald trump and richard nixon. What does that tell you . Last 13 polls say donald trump is winning . Donald trump is the winner and he lost by four points. Ted cruz overperformed by four points. So i mean, i think what we saw tonight, megyn is that and laws absolutely do apply to donald trump. Ted cruz won because he outworks and outorganized donald trump. That just proved the big win for cruz. Other thing is that the evangelical vote tonight was big. 64 of voters described as evangelical, they win decidedly for ted cruz. 22 for donald trump. 21 for marco rubio. Trump and cruz had been splitting the evangelical vote. You know i think donald trump created a large enough pool of people to win the iowa caucus. And i point out to you that Ronald Reagan lost Iowa Caucuses after refusing to do a final debate and bounced back in New Hampshire. The makeup of New Hampshire is probably better turf for trump so Iowa Caucuses do not a nominee make. This contest moves on to New Hampshire and South Carolina. What do you make of it, guy . Those here in iowa, the Biggest Group said the most important thing is someone who shared their values. 42 . Next can bring change, 21 . They wanted someone who shared their values. Of those, 38 went for ted cruz. The next closest was rubio at 21. Just 5 believe trump shares their values. That goes to conservatism. One of the big critiques from donald trump from people like myself is that we dont view donald trump as a committed, reliable conservative. When you add two totals up in this race, among those top three, ted cruz and marco rubio, you get 51 coming out of iowa to 24 for donald trump. So the big question is how will this field thin out . How quickly will it thin out . If it become thats threeperson race we heard marco rubios Campaign Dynamics change . Trump was talking about his pierces his message of invincibility, that he is a winner and always wins. He didnt. Nice try, charles. The truth is that he was humble and gracious tonight. Trump is a competitor. He needs to be more, i think, focused in his criticism of ted cruz, but ted cruz cant get to marco rubio until he gets to donald trump and i dont think that is going to happen. I think ted cruzs campaign reached a high mark tonight. Do you think trump is looking at rubio more now as a guy hes got to take out or cruz . Trump must deal with cruz first but trump is mindful of the fact that rubio is coming up the side and winning the intermural competition to be the establishment candidate. So he has to deal with cruz and with rubio. About to get interesting. Great to see you, thank you for being here. Thank you. The political probe from iowa predicted we can see the winners as early as 9 00 p. M. Mark theissan and bill burton are here next with what that means for mrs. Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Bernie sanders. What iowa has begun tonight [screaming] the bold nissan rogue, with intuitive all wheel drive. Because winter needs a hero. Now get a 199 per month lease on the 2016 nissan rogue. Nissan. Innovation that excites. I wish governor omalley the best. He is a great Public Servant who served our country. And i am excited about really getting into the debate with senator sanders about the best way forward to fight for us and america. Still an amazing sight to see the former president standing behind her. Isnt it . Its just amazing whats happening on that side. That was Hillary Clinton earlier tonight. Right now the race is in a dead heat. The fox decision desk calling the democratic side too close to call tonight. James rosen is live at Bernie Sanders headquarters. James . Good evening, shall i say good morning. Aides to senator sanders tell me they dont know which way this is going to go. 94 of the precincts have reported in. And they pointed me to a number of counties where Bernie Sanders is winning big and some counties theyre still 80 of the precincts only reported in. So when he took the stage before midnight, about ten to midnight, after Hillary Clinton had finished speaking, senator sanders did not declare a concession speech, saying this is a virtual tie and congratulated Hillary Clinton and had warmer words for Martin Omalley and pro claimed his political resolution in iowa has begun. We have sent a profound message to the political establishment, to the Economic Establishment and, way the way, to the media establishment. And we heard a lot of bashing of fossil fuel industry, he feels emboldened and thinks hes on his way to a national campaign. Thank you, two former white house insiders, mark theissan and bill burton. Good to see you both. Mark receipt me start with you. So the big loser tonight was establishment in both parties. So if you think about it, if you look at the establishment choices, bush, krifttie and kasich took a combined 6. 4 of the vote tonight. And Hillary Clinton is tied in a race too close to call with Bernie Sanders a person leading last year at this time, 68 to 7 . So in 2008 Hillary Clinton lost to a young, handsome charismatic star. Today, shes in a dead heat with a 74yearold disheveled soci socialist. I think Hillary Clinton put together a better Ground Organization and is probably going to eek out a little bit of a victory. As this race progresses youre going to see meaningful what is ahead for him . What does it mean if she has a narrow victory here and he has a victory there . It looks like 2000, bradley voersus gore. If you dont start locking up wins you run out of team. For Bernie Sanders he made Economic Issues in the fore front in a way maybe they werent and ran a great race. I dont think interest there is a lot of steam left it in. What do you make of the g. O. P. Side . I think big loss for donald trump. It shows. You dont duck fox news. And a lot of people decided at the last minute, after that debate, he wasnt on the stage. He was afraid of taking questions from you. The big winner is fox news and the loser, donald trump. What about you, bill . Do you see ted cruz having a chance to secure the g. O. P. Nomination . Its funny. His victory speech is the most bizarre i have seen. It was long. Exhausting. I can see why Hillary Clinton decided just to go out there, mom, love you, dad, the whole thing. I think ted cruz follows a long line of republicans who cant win the nomination. Marco rubio had a big night, he got over 20 of poll. Does he scare you as a democrat sf. If i had a chance of running against ted cruz and marco rubio id want to run against ted cruz. How about you . I think that he is what the democrats are more scared of. Parko rubio. He is young, charismatic, stratteled both establishment and outsider lanes and talks about the future. Hes a modern jfk to Hillary Clintons richard nixon. What happens to the other guys at the bottom now . I think youll see the herd get thinned out. When . Next week. I think you lose all of the governors. The night of the New Hampshire primary . Yes. Some will stick around but not that many. Two men who often lead our political coverage will get the last word. Ask your doctor about stelara®. Here with final thoughts Chris Stirewalt and howard kurtz, host of media buzz on fox news. Chris, your thoughts. I tell you what, that was a rip snorter. That was pretty good. You have trump demonstrates that his voters are real, but theyre not as real as the polling suggests. You have ted cruz delivers on his promise. He looks like a traditional iowa winner, like weve seen like huckabee and santorum, but hes got some steel in his belted radials, more money, more organization, nor national stuff, the chance to turn it into something else. But probably the single most important thing that happened, probably beyond anything else for the Republican Party is they started to get their act together. Right . They started to figure out that you cant have a huckabee, a santorum and a cruz. You cant have a rubio and a bush and a kasich and a christie. And i tell you what, no human being in history has spent more money to finish at 3 than jeb bush. And so now as that part of the Republican Party, sort of the traditional Republican Party moves on, as that goes forward, marco rubio took a big step ahead. Now you have a threeman race. Now you start to see the contours and donald trump has to face a new reality where he is going to have to work harder for the votes and face two tough other guys. Ted cruz deserves credit not just for beating donald trump. This is a guy who got into the race, the beltway establishment felt he was an extremist, hated by the party establishment. He pulled something off here. With the two caveats. I thought he hurt himself with the 40minute speech. I thought he was reading from green eggs and ham it went on so long. Secondly, you always get swept gallup the iowa after glow. Four of the last six winners did not win the nomination. This was a terrible made state for ted cruz. He had to win it. He did win it. But he is going to have a tougher time in places like New Hampshire, for example. Speak about the endorsements. Glenn beck came in for cruz at the last minute. Said he is a constitutional conservative, he loves america, he loves the constitution. Thats the way he is going to governor. Sarah palin made a big splash coming out for donald trump and lending her Tea Party Bone fides to him. In the end it didnt make a difference. Donald trump failed to participate in iowas only president ial republican debate. That was a terrible decision. It was spun by his many, many admirers in the press as a genius play. Iowans wanted to hear what he had to say in that debate. He snubbed them. That was foolish. And the result revealed it. You have to play by some of the rules. Everybody likes the fact that donald trump doesnt play by the rules. But in this case you have to play by some of them. And one of them is you got to do the debate. Well see if he will become a more disciplined campaigner, keep himself in jet. 20 of the vote in iowa for the guy most famous for hosting the apprentice cle is pretty darn good. His voters should be proud of what they did. If he cant figure out to run like a regular candidate, its not going to be good. I agree about the debate and i thought cruz had a much better ground game, a traditional thing to do in the Iowa Caucuses. But maybe its not such a bad thing for donald trump to get a little dose of humility. A lot of people think he is too braggadocios and stuff. No, going to melt down. Hes still got a lot of enthusiastic support. New hampshire is a much better state for him. And he doesnt need money. He can use his own money. But a boost for marco rubio because he played the expectations game right. And therefore he is seen as getting a boost. And his speech was quite something to listen to. Senator marco rubio in third place with 23 . On the democratic side at this hour, the caucuses are still too close to call. Hillary clinton, Bernie Sanders now in a dead heat. Earlier tonight after his big win senator cruz celebrated with his supporters in the hawkeye state. Take a look. God bless the strait great state of iowa
