Ahead. What is the future of the Republican Party and the conservative movement after a trump second term. As the president said to lower ingram just this week. I will say this. At some point i will not be president. Hopefully that will be in five years from now, but i will not be president. Hes right, and the question were going to investigate tonight with some fantastic guests including matt gates, sarah carter and charlie kirk is this. What is next after trump wins a second term. What happens to populism as the republic and party looks ahead to the 2024 election and beyond. Lets start with this extraordinary article that appeared on the eve of the Republican Convention a couple weeks ago. The grand old meltdown. What happens when a policy gives up on ideas. Its written by tim alberta, chief political correspondent. Heres a quote. I can now safely be said is his first time in the white house draws foreclosure that Donald Trump Party is the very definition of a personality that stands for no special ideal and has no organizing principle. Again, republican collapse and biden wins the white house, democrats flip the senate and hold the house would trigger a reckoning within the gop. The efforts to expunge this ugly chapter of gop history could commence with stunning ferocity. This is what people like janaki sick and Steve Schmidt and Nicole Wallace and all the never trumpeters seem to think. The after trump the Republican Party is just gonna fall back in line and obediently serve the big dome again that once the aberration, as they see it of donald trump is out of the way, will just go back to the establishment gop. I think is important that the American People have these facts as they consider what to do in november, and as we look at our history and see trump for what i hope history will record it to be an aberration. What arrogance. What idiocy. What to they give us, these establishment, two wars in afghanistan that killed over 400,000 people, disastrous trade deals that sent millions of jobs overseas and gutted the heartland. Open borders that destroy jobs and lowered wages for the working class, and total surrender to the loony left authoritarians so we now have the nightmare of chairman cultural revolution right here in america, mobs of hate field zealots taking over the media, schools, Corporate America, silencing and crushing thought on the brink of destroying america. President trump, fresh republican to actually stand up to them and fight for america. These never trumpeters and Establishment Republicans are utterly delusional if they think anyone except their smug friends in the media bubble want to go back to how it was before trump. Theyre so shallow and superficial that they cant see beyond their own prejudice. My Republican Party, its not a party, its a cult of personality. The Republican Party has fully become a cult of personality. The establishment republican republicans, just like the establishment generally totally underestimate this president. They idolize obama because he talks like a college professor, but what did obama actually achieve intellectually speaking. He didnt change anyones thinking. He had no big ideas, he had no ideas of any kind, really. In an unguarded moment he admitted as much. One of the most shocking things i thought president obama ever said was about the Historical Impact of a president. Heres how he sought. At the end of the day we are part of a longrunning story. We just tried to get our paragraph right. The New York Times columnist said at the time mr. President , i am just trying to get my paragraph right. You need to think bigger. President trump does think bigger. He didnt come into office wanting to write a paragraph in the history book, he wanted to write a new chapter, even a new book. Look, no one would call donald trump and intellectual. I suspect he himself would consider an insult, but ideas matter. Real power in politics is not just the office you hold in the policies you introduce, all of that is fleeting and temporary. Real power is when you change the way people think, you change the climate of opinion. You win the battle of ideas. That last way beyond the time youre in office. In my lifetime i can think of only three political leaders anywhere in the world who actually did that. One was margare Margaret Thatcher in england where i was growing up. Another was donald reg and here in america. And the third is donald trump. Now i know that snooty elites will be waiting to hear this president in the same breath as reagan and thatcher, but think about it. Those leaders changed how people think and it shaped policy and politics for decades after they left office with the force of their will they overturn the consensus of their day on the role of government the size of the state. Thats exactly what donald trump has done in his first term. He overturned the establishment consensus on china and endless war and trade and manufacturing. Before trump they said we need to appease china. We need to be the worlds policeman. Theres no point in fighting but after trump, who thanks any republican running for president in 2024 or 28 for that matter we get anywhere on a platform that is pro china that pushes Foreign Military engagement to some notion of americas role in the world that takes the side of Global Corporations on trade and immigration instead of american workers. Forget about it. Trump has, in some cases pretty much singlehandedly given that they have the entire establishment against him brought about a seachange in the intellectual climate. That is his last legacy and that is the future after trump, the new conservative populism we talk about here. Probusiness on time trend tax and regulation come up pro worker on trade and immigration, donald trump has been focused on the economy. Hes a businessman after all. In 2016 the priority was jobs and now because of the virus in the shutdown its a priority in 2022 that in time the next generation of conservative populist will have a chance to broaden the vision. President trumps conservative populism has certainly focused on the pro worker and pro america part but smart thinkers in the conservative populist movement are looking ahead to the next revolution , stable families, Strong Communities and more. We will discuss some of that tonight and above all, remember President Trumps revolution is not an aberration. Positive populism is here to stay follow us at steve hilton next and share this moment post it. Joining me now to react to the book firebrand, our friend matt gates. We love having on the show. We talk about daily politics and so on. You dont often get the chance to talk about policy and longterm thinking, id love you to look ahead a few years where this conservative populist movement that the president initiated, where do you think it should be heading. I think the establishment hopes that donald trump is just a rogue wave but in fact hes the front end of the wave and as one of the younger members of congress, i have a vested interest of the future of the Republican Party looks like and i figure should be a party that embraces the mantra of America First. You didnt hear a lot of republicans talking about America First before donald trump and we should never strut from that brandon lexicon. Its really funny to hear some of the Establishment Republicans talking about this world is a cult of personality. I think theyre confused because many of their champions like mitt romney and john kasich had no personality at all and so having a little personality and animating our values with a little bit of energy is a good thing, its the stuff of winning and its why in days i believe the country will elect donald trump and keep the good times rolling. And when you see the next generation youre obviously one of the leaders, you see people who really change their attitude and questions of trade and immigration, how we really need to think about workers. Do you see that as being a widespread shift within the Republican Party thats going to be a lasting change . We have to reelect donald trump if we want the Republican Party to continue to embrace the America First values because of donald trump loses some of the establishment voices that are still in our party, still in our leadership, folks like liz cheney who would want to invade everywhere and invite everyone to our country would try to reassert themselves at the top of the party. So this is not just a definitional moment for america, its a definitional moment for conservatism and its my hope that we do put our people first and we invest here at home and that we not try to spill every treasure of american tax dollars trying to build democracies out of sand and blood and arab militias out in some distant desert. One of the areas you focused on, weve talked about it before is the influence of big money and corporations, and the donors, youve really taken the lead on that. I think a lot of people see, a lot of regular republicans but the problem with the establishment that was captured by the owners, youre showing how to escape the clutch of the donors. Just talk about that. Too many in washington d. C. Say they are coming to drain the swamp but they turn it into their own personal bloodbath. Im the only republican returning to congress who has refused special interest pack money. I dont take any pac money from any washington packs because the American People are my one and only specialinterest. I think with President Trump we have the opportunity to liberate ourselves from the special interests who seem to be in charge, often times no matter which party wins elections. Now i think we really are back to that pro worker type of policy that brings resources from overseas to fund the ambition and wages and dreams of americans. I think thats so smart that you really not just talked about that, but actually done it in terms of your own, the way you operate in politics and its a real model for others. Stay there for second period. One. Politics is supposed to be the noblest of professions but with the change of money for favors in washington d. C. It bears to striking resemblance to the oldest profession, personally im done picking up the money from the lobbyists and the special interests in the nightstand and id invite my republican colleagues to join. Hear hear for that. Lets bring in sarah, carter and charlie kirk. Weve talked about this a lot. This movement. Youre absolutely part of it to. Where do you see it going. Look ahead and look ahead beyond and into the future. Exciting time. They covered the two conventions fairly but youll find the Republican Party is also in the party of middleclass workers ending foreign wars, challenging corporate elites in the party of free speech. How did that happen . That was really quick. That used to be the opposite. It used to be the democrats that were for all of those things. Now there for endless foreign wars, nationbuilding overseas, protecting Corporate America for all costs, unlimited immigration there now defending some the most popular parts of our country where President Trump, his longest Lasting Legacy will be changing the philosophical basis of the Republican Party. Being a pro worker party from challenging these endless nationbuilding adventures overseas and congressman matt gates is a hero for his position on campaignfinance reform and thats another longLasting Legacy of President Trump which maybe theres some will malevolent forces in washington. President donald trump, one day hes not going to be president unfortunately but his legacy is just beginning. Its beginning a positive change to be a people centered government, not a government that is centered around the elites against the people. We can all make jokes like the president sometimes does but maybe hell run for a third term or fourth term, but if you look to the future beyond 2024, i just cant see how any republican is going to get anywhere by saying will go back to the old establishment way of doing it. They can try but the American People will not respond to that. They wont respond to the old establishment way of doing things. One of the things that i think is so extraordinary about President Donald Trump presidency is that its about the American People. Its a real awakening of america. Its not just a reawakening within the Republican Party, its a reawakening of america, of americans, of the expansion of independence and liberty where were not going to take it anymore. Thats. Much with the iraqi people said in the election in 2016, and i believe youre going to do the same in november. I think charlie put it so eloquently when he laid it out, this is not the Republican Party of endless wars, the Republican Party of benefiting those overseas while stifling the growth of the American People in the workforce. This is the party that says bring it back to america. Lets bring back america. Lets reawaken america. Lets make america the leader again in the world. Exceptionalism come a place where other people, other people from all of the world like they did in the past can look toward and say thats what we want to be. Thats where we want to be, and were doing that right now and obviously, and its pretty obvious when you look at the news and you look at the Cable Networks and see whats happening in democratic cities all across this country, you see a failure in the Democratic Party and not just a failure in the Democratic Party, but a failure with the establishment and the American People are seeing that. I totally see that. Much more on President Trump in the future of the conservative populist movement and also state turn tuned for a fantastic joe biden comedy segment. Were back with mark gates and charlie kirk on the future of conservative populism. Mark gates, i just wanted ask you to think about some other policy areas where we could apply this kind of thinking because right now as i was saying earlier obviously the priority has to be the economy just as it was in 2016, get us out of this economic hole and get jobs back. Thats what we need, thats what President Trump knows how to do and what will be focus on after hes reelected but beyond that, one issue that hasnt been right in the front of things so far has been one that youve worked on which is the environment and youve got a very interesting conservative view on that which i think is really fascinating. In the. Talk about that. Sure, in response to Alexandra Cortez deal is the vision that a builder like President Trump would have to actually improve the environment that people enjoy. It will be next week in florida that President Trump will travel to our our state and really surveilling all the progress thats been made in the everglades. A look at the midwest in the real rate revitalization that weve seen with the great lakes as a consequence of business approach to making our environment better so that all americans can enjoy our natural splendor. We cannot have put America First if we allow america to be filthy. President trump understands that and his environment or policies havent been pie a mystic guy, they havent been government takeover, they been empowering states and local communities to do better to clean things up. Thats a huge part of it, the empowering of states and local communities and decentralizing power. We touch on that like i said at the top of the hour and we said pro community, putting power in peoples hands. Sarah, another big issue, actually the president , when i spoke to him at the white house the other week i asked him what are some of things we can look forward to in the second term they havent really been able to focus on up till now, certainly your first term. Stotop of his list was School Choice which i thought was very exciting to hear. I think its absolutely one of the most important issues for American Families today and i think that really invigorates the base and the voters in the midwest. Look we have been struggling now since january. I know i have, other families have, especially under tobit where weve come to realize that does our word matter, doesnt matter where we send our kids to school, why dont we have any more choices and we saw that in Fairfax County here in virginia where, when they shut the schools down basically and told everyone you have to keep your kid at home, theyd then attempted and they still are charging people to bring their kids to school they have to go to work under some new type of program. So why not give the money back to the American People, give them their tax dollars, let them pick the schools that that is the best for their children in their life and allow thats move forward. I think President Trump has a winning winning idea what that and the American People will expect and deliver on that, and one more thing really quick, we have seen that President Trump is that kind of president. When he makes a commitment to something, he follows through with it. So yes, School Choice is number one. And charlie, last issue i just want to put to you is something that a lot of people have been saying, its this issue of family and how the undermining of stable families over decades now has contributed to so many of the problems that weve seen around us. How would you put that into the mix of the future of conservative populism, that profamily idea. It needs to be a core bedrock of conservatism and this is something i disagree with that mitt romney tried to do back in 2012 was have a stop talking about social issues. I dont believe that all the sudden we should embrace this metropolitan or malibu worldview and forget this incredible history. Profamily is a key part of what you talk about. I mention this in my rnc speech where were actually on pace in 2021, were actually on pace inc. According to the Brookings Institution to have 500 less children next year than this year. This is a population collapse. People want to be able to live quiet and peaceful lives and have many children in the party that can convince people of that and prove that their the pro family party, the pro Children Party will be rewarded and President Trump has been on the right side of this issue and the democrats pandered to a very radical extreme cultural agenda from malibu in manhattan that i think is actually a loser for them longterm. Exactly. Really fundamental. I totally agree with that. Thank you all. Matt gates i think were going to say goodbye, thank you for being with us. We always appreciate it. Always a pleasure. See you soon. Coming up weve got an important announcement for you. A new think tank has recently been set up to counter the influence of the establishment and policymaking circles. Meanwhile wildfires and triple digit temperatures that california may lead to rolling blackouts as customers there dont start conserving energy. According to power grid officials, at least three large fires are burning right now including the creek fire north of los angeles. The flames have burned more than 45000 acres and a 0 contained. Now back to the next revolution. Welcome back. For years conservative policymaking in washington d. C. Was dominated that turned out the same old policy that hurt workers undermine families, destroyed local communities in soldout america and all that is about change. Theres a new kid on the block, new think tank working along the same lines as we ever paid on this show with positive populism. Its called American Compass and im delighted that its executive director oren who youve seen talking about his fantastic book, oren is here tonight with us. Lets talk about some specifics in a moment but first could you just set out for our audience what youre hoping to achieve with American Compass. Sure, its great to see you. We are at American Compass trying to restore an economic consensus which is really the way americans and conservatives used to think about the economy that emphasize the importance of family, community and industry to the nations liberty and prosperity and realized. [inaudible] give us some specific, i think a couple months ago one of the first things you focused on with this big issue of bringing back jobs from overseas, i think you call it reassuring jobs, tell us about that. Reassuring is a great example and its something where the establishment got so wrong for so long saying establishment doesnt matter, they say it doesnt matter which jobs go over seas, free markets will create something thats even better for everybody and obviously that hasnt happened. It didnt work out for a lot of people and we especially have seen during the pandemic that having supply chains in this country, knowing how to make things in this country matter and theres lots and lots of different Public Policy we could pursue that would help with that. We could invest more in invasion, have better systems of training for worker, leftists regulations that prevents people from building thing, we could invest more in infrastructure, theres a long list of approaches we could take and i think its really important to put all of that at the top of our list. On labor day weekend, i think weve got something new thats just come out or just about to come out which focuses on workers in particular. Tell us about that. Were really excited to announce it right now in fact were kicking off a new package for labor day thats called a seat at the table. Its about the idea that conservatives should really care about organized labor and its not the unions that we have today and big labor which mostly seems to function to raise money for democrats, but the idea of organized labor, the idea that workers should be able to come together to form associations, to have some power and bargain collectively, i think those are great ideas that conservatives should care about and a lot of other conservatives to so were releasing a statement signed by everybody from marco rubio to attorney general Jeff Sessions and leaders of think tanks and some of the leading conservative labor lawyers, all making this exact point that labor should work differently than it does right now in this country, but conservative shouldnt be hoping that labor goes away. They should be finding a way to build strong organizations that give workers a real seat at the table. I just love your approach to all these questions. Since you los launched American Compass and you been out there making these arguments, wind whats been the reaction from others in the establishment and the conservative movement. Generally the reaction has been really, really encouraging. If i look just over the last couple weeks, especially with the Republican Convention going on we had the opportunity to tell our story everywhere. In the New York Times and wall street journal, cnn, npr, even the financial time over in england, everyone was really interested in this and wants to highlight that the future for the right of center doesnt just have to be going back to the same old tax cuts and more tax cuts and were sure everything will come out okay. Theres a lot of important ideas out there were trying to do our part to build that up to make sure theres a really promising party for conservativism. Were really proud to support this. Is it American Compass. Org . American compass. Org. We will have all our stuff about labor up and we hope people will come check it out. Thank you so much for all that fantastic work. Its great to see. Thank you steve. Sarah and charlie are back when we come back. Dont goar away taking entresto, it may lead to a world of possibilities. Well, Td Ameritrade has pros ready if you need help, say talking through a new strategy. Just in case things, you know, get a little rocky . Im sorry on the upside i think thats waterproof. Maybe not. One back everyone. Were back with charlie and sarah. I think its really encouraging and interesting that youve got a new think tank like american compan compass thats working in this more populous direction. I think thats really great news. I totally agree in the consensus of elites and expert has really led america in dangerous directions so the fact that theyll be an intellectual base to defend the American Family and workers is a welcome surprise on the landscape and i also think its going to give lasting staying power to President Trump and his movement. [inaudible] the most important thing is about caring about people and if you have lawlessness or you dont care about their security, if youre divisive, you dont care about the people of your country and weve seen that on both sides, both on the east coast and the west coast with the democrats, and unfortunately weve also seen that in other areas throughout the country. Look at minneapolis. Look at what weve seen in the police force there. Weve lost over hundred Police Officers since the George Floyd Killing and the community is reeling. People are saying please bring our police force back. Defending the police and shutting down in innovation and not caring about Small Businesses is exactly the opposite of what people should be doing in politics, and i think what were seeing, like i said earlier steve, is this reawakening of the Republican Party and a reawakening within america where were putting America First and that is the most important part of the doctrine and thats what Donald Trumps legacy will be. Spreads theres no way anyone will go back to where we are on china after President Trump completely change the conversation. The only reason youll be on the side of china is if a capital flow is incentivizing you to be on the side of china. Theres no way that you can represent the American People and your constituents and also say that you want whats best for china. That goes for the athletes, hollywood and for the people in the kingdom of washington d. C. The people that are pandering to the Chinese Communist party right now are probably incentivized in some way or another from the communist party corrupting our political system. This is where the president was ahead of the curve and has changed the geopolitical landscape for the better, finally challenging a menace that is china. Of i said many times people may look back and say that was the most consequential thing he did of all the other things was totally reorienting policy on china and waking people up to that strategic threat in the 21st century. All right. Great discussion. Thank you so much. Coming up we have a great joe biden comedy segment later in the show. Next how can we spur the type of innovation sparrow was just talking about that we need right now for our recovery. Only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. We need innovation now, more than ever as we get our economy back on track. Earlier i sat down to talk with matt ridley about his book how Innovation Works to get a deeper understanding of the topic. Take a look. Matt ridley, great to see you. I know weve got a lot of fans this side of the atlantic. Youre speaking to us tonight from the uk, a lot of people follow you here for your views on the environment, youre a Climate Change skeptic, you put out great information on your twitter account on that as well as other issues but weve written this fantastic book which im greatly enjoying about innovation. I just want to start by asking you by asking what you see that term as meaning and why its so important. Its flung around all the time, that word innovation. Why is that term some important. Innovation is probably the most important fact about the modern world. It explains nearly everything thats happened in the last several years. It explained trends going on in the moment and it surprisingly fully understood. What i mean by innovation is not the invention of something brandnew but the making of something available to people. Making it affordable, available and reliable in a way that people can use it. So its both coming up with something new and making it useful to people. And that is a really difficult process. Its something we dont fully understand why it works in some cases and not others and we dont seem to be able to order it up to it happens in some sectors but not others. Its a very mysterious process in some ways. Ive written this book how Innovation Works and its a shot at getting to the heart of this central human phenomenon. What i love about the book is you give really practical examples, almost like a history of the modern world where you look at different sectors like food and energy and so on. And just explain how some of the things weve taking for granted in our everyday lives which has huge economic implications came about. Just tell us a couple of the stories there that you are most excited about writing about. I was very keen to write the book in terms of stories because people like reading stories. Stories are how we understand the world and the stories of each innovation with themselves produce these sort of general lessons i was looking for so to take a couple of examples, the steam engine is incredibly important, but so is the Search Engine, one is very recent, one happened a long time ago. The steam engine is the first occasion on which we link the world of heat with the world of work. We make work from heat. And thats an incredibly important part of the industrial revolution. And how it came about is still rather mysterious. We dont really know how Thomas Newcomen who is the chief person got his idea, whether he got them from the scientists and what was about early 18th century england that enabled this extraordinary machine to start replacing human muscles and the muscles of horses and so on. And if you take another example from much more recently, the Search Engine which we associate with google in the early 1990s, of course an incredibly important thing that looks unbelievably obvious in retrospect once we invented the internet we were bound to invent search. And yet that wasnt the way it looked at the time, the people were inventing Search Engines didnt even know thats what they were doing. They thought they were cataloguing the internet and it was inevitable that people would embed them but they didnt see it coming. Nobody in the 80s et cetera. The way to make money on the internet is going to be to invent a Search Engine. That example tells us the sort of asymmetry of innovation that you cant see it coming in yet its obvious after it happened. There are so many great stories. Including how sliced bread was invented. I think people would enjoy that. Last question, if politicians want to encourage innovation what should they do . The main thing they have to do is get out of the way of innovators. The real problem with innovations rules and regulations and the pressure of monopolistic competitors and neo phobic pressure groups who try to stop it happening. The main thing is to try to stop people stopping it happening. Because its freedom. Its freedom that makes innovation happen. Thats clear, in china there allowed to get on with things and they invite invented gunpowder and all these things and they were not allowed to do things. [inaudible] i think youre seeing a similar shift in china from the relative Economic Freedom of the last 30 years even though there is no Political Freedom to a time when im afraid the regime will be to intrusive and probably will kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.
