Break contest for at least some of the contenders. Lets ask Dan Hemminger and columnist and Manhattan Institute senior fellow jason riley. Any doubt that sanders is the front runner . No doubt at all. Numbers told the story. He has won two caucus is in the primary in a row in nevada and South Carolina and bernie has a cement like block of supporters a 25 . It is the question whether he can expand that base. We said that about donald trump. Im not sure the same is true of you dont think he could expand as much. One of the big stories in the past week, is the workers in nevada, they have repudiated, bernies medicare for all saying the preferred their goldplated private insurance plans. And the thing that most people attached to Bernie Sanders is medicare for all. And i think that was that six and with the American People it begins to establishha a feelingn his support which gives an opportunity for the moderates to vote however theyre going to do that, but a judge and Amy Klobuchar and Mike Bloomberg, those are not releasing joe biden. [laughter]. And find out if they have a candidate they can put up against him. Its about why couldnt Elisabeth Warren as Bernie Sanders is the champion. Theres a lot of thinking that she would do precisely that in the summer but it just has not happened. I think she made two big mistakes in one of them was this flipflop that she did on medicare for all. Coming out saying that she would endorse it within saying, we probably wouldnt institute it for a couple of years. It really made her look less like the real thing than bernie. I think the mistake now in retrospect was going after him. Not making contest with him. They have this mutual nonaggression pact but its really just giving him the field and she was feeling it after New Hampshire. She may well be done. Because joe biden done too. I think we know where dan feels about that but biden has made an explicit appeal. On tuesday night to minority voters to say in nevada, latinos and africanamericans in South Carolina. Theres an outside chance that South Carolina is a him that it is not, i am very doubtful paul. I think he is underperformed early and to such an extent that no one was really expecting anything its going to be very tough for him to recover a lot of those more census voters seems to move to Amy Klobuchar rightly of course has had this work and we will see how she does going forward. She raised a bunch of money after she won the last debate and then what New Hampshire. But now she was going on to nevada which is an organization. She doesnt have a lot of infrastructure and shes been making even more money going forward. So we will see how she plays there. The binding, i think a lot of people are counting them out right now. Paul and as jason points out they need money. But she doess appeal to an awful lot of what i would call the Center Left Democrats and the progressives who arent in the sanders moran going. A lot going for her in terms of her seriousness and she is appealing as a person. Not charismatic but looks solid and is capable. Jason t think she also democrat deep thinking appeal to them. For meeting donald trump. They agree on a candidate who can defeat trump. One of the ways to do that, is to polos amongst the suburban women into the column away from top. Amy klobuchar looks like so many who could do that. Two thirds of her vote in New Hampshire was from women. I think of chloe shark did that and then she could possibly run, a lifelong democrat boot bluecollar democrat, i think she could make an appeal to minorities as well. Wif you can make a case that se would make a very strong candidate against donald trump. Jason she said, listen i am prochoice but prolife people are welcome to this party. In contrast that with Bernie Sanders. If your stance, i think that is smart on the part of Amy Klobuchar. Paul in New Hampshire pete been a judge, the examples he had the most Diverse Coalition the most breath across almost all demographic groups he did. Pete buttigieg did reasonably well. What are his challenges in nevada and South Carolina. Because exit polls are little deceiving though. Because New Hampshire isnt as a diverse state as many other states. Salinities is number one number one challenges he goes to nevada. And South Carolina can he prove himself with these court demographics in the Democratic Party. The africanamerican and latino votes. The polls havent necessarily shown him doing well with those groups. It took a little better now that he is a better name recognition out of iowa and New Hampshire thats going to be the big test for him. When we come back following his New Hampshire win, Bernie Sanders takes the lead ramping up concern among swing state democrats. Syphilis sanders at the top of the ticket. Where the partys chances of winning g g g g im your 70lb st. Bernard puppy, and my lack of impulse control, is about to become your problem. Ahh no, come on. I saw you eating poop earlier. Hey my focus is on the road, and thats saving me cash with drivewise. Whos the dummy now . Whoof whoof so get allstate where good drivers save 40 for avoiding mayhem, like me. Sorry hes a baby introducing tide power pods with cat nat. I love how much i can stuff into these machines. But that is such a large load, dont the stains sneak through . Please. New tide power pods can clean that. Whole situation. You just toss it in before the clothes. Its like two regular tide pods and then some power and then even more power. With 50 more cleaning power, even your large load got clean. How many kids do you have . Girl i lost track. Theres a lot of kids. And then theres a husband, and then theres me. Thats a lot of clothes. Paul onto nevada. It is on to win the democratic nomination. And together, i have no doubt that we will defeat donald trump. Paul Bernie Sanders declaring victory and wrapping his path to the nomination. Selfdescribed democratic socialist now living in several national polls. Even as some democrats question his ability to beat President Trump in november, and expressed concern about down ballot races if he is the nominee. Managing director of this group in term of the harris poll. He set on bill clintons 1996 campaign in Hillary Clintons 2008 president ial campaign. Howonood to see you so strong the front runner is Bernie Sanders now. Is a stronger front runner now the state joe biden has been for the last year. I think he is got a considerable vote out there. And remember last time when he battled hillary clinton, by the end of the race and the support of just about half of all democrat. Mark so there is kind of muscle memory, he could kind of tap into that is unique and known of the other candidates him. As i think that the idea that he could win the nomination is really quite real. Paul but there seems to be, it is a base of 2025 percent, 26 i guess. But he hasnt been able to expand that at least in the first couple of on his. His edges because it is a multicandidate field. Or is it a real ceiling on his part. Mark it is a multi field. There is a real feeling of his support but essentially, his next group of voters are being filled by Elisabeth Warren. And so the date she drops out, get out about 15 percent. Paul 15 percent. You think his support will go to bernie. Mark absolutely the progress of support that she has, will almost entirely go to bernie. In his problem right now is simply Elisabeth Warren. She stays in all of the way, he is going to be stuck in the 20s in the 30s and if she drops out, then he will have an opportunity to dominate and a lot of the states. Paul he will get past the 15 percent threshold. He wont rock up delegates and i guess he is hoping that the centerleft candidates, Amy Klobuchar, pete and biden in a failed state and because because they divide up the boat and he keeps rocking up delegates. That is the strategy to get a majority. As you see. Mark left versus moderate, the question is was going to consolidate their voters first. Because in the way this primary is structured, if in fact, biting is dropping foreclosure chart came in and Amy Klobuchar is a big box for bloomberg which is expected to pick up the biden vote in the biden vote collapsed. So there wont be a battle oddly enough, unexpected battle between bloomberg and hope you chart. It is completely all about consolidate the boat faster. Amy klobuchar. Paul you know how the role of money plays in politics. Bloomberg has an unlimited tempo. But we never seen anybody try to invest in a campaign to this magnitude. How is that going to play. Will he suddenly pop up and start racking up delegates to but making it past the 15 percent threshold. s betook he has a record of just money. He was a top official for three terms of the biggest city in the country and i think some of the toughest things of what we used to call the tent second toughest job in america. And he said that will pretty so if you can bring this notion that he is big and accomplish in business, hes accomplished as an elected official, and you see spending a lot h of money. But behind that is real substance. And thats whereis tom stier didnt have any substance, just money. That is a big difference. Paul is bloomberg the most competition right now to sanders. Forty steve Pete Buttigieg or Amy Klobuchar playing that role. I think is a little unclear. I think bloomberg is a potential and cookie jar has a lot of potential and both of them, im just looking at polls earlier a lot of voters dont know who they are and could be positively inclined or negatively inclined were a lot of the otherbl candidates are already known to sanders is tougherin for them to make progress. I will go back the sanders big problem is nothing hundreds his eroblem is Elisabeth Warren. Paul coming the problem is it for sanders that you have a concern among a lot of mainstream democrats and particularly, if he is at the top of the ticket, everybody down all of the way down, is going to have to defend the democratic socialist idea. If thats going to really put into play even maybe the house majority. Mark issues matter. Bernie sanders is wellliked political figure more so than a lot of the others. But his issue platform, medicare for all, new retail, all of those issues are losers the Democratic Party when it gangs together as opposed to a more moderate platform across those issues. Id tell this every month, is a difference between losing almost two to one and even winning with the emergent public on issues compared to the republican pat platform. It is used matter and make a big difference. Socialism has not yet come and his time in america. Paul if you are one of the other democrats, would you have bernie very hard and that is a look sir, you simply cannot win with that platform. We have to nominate someone who can. Mark i absolutely would draw that line pretty sharply. If you need winter. They need programs that are affordable and you need programs that will pass the general electric. Otherwise, President Donald Trump will get afo second term. Paul is fascinating. When we come back, Mike Bloomberg begins as a former new york city mayor arrives in the full pass controversial, simulate i like liberty mutual. Touchdown get started with internet and voice for an amazing price. Call today. Comcast business. Beyond fast. Paul were back with dan henninger, kim strassel and Jason Jason Jason riley. Jason, what do you make of the flap over stop and frisk . Just that, its a flap. I think most people understand that what Mike Bloomberg said basically true, its true that the problem in these communities is not policing, its the crime rate. Polices are responding to those communities because that is where the 9 11 calls originate. So i dont think this is a big todo, hell is have to muddle through it. Paul can he pick up significant africanamerican support, as he claims he can . I dont know, paul, thats hard to know. He has a record, but he cant really run on it paul wait, wait, what do you mean . The why cant he run on it in. Because what the Democratic Party has billion. His record is Crime Reduction through proactive policing [inaudible conversations] School Choice. But the party has moved away from those things. Paul well, is that true of africanamerican voters . In fact, they support Charter Schools and School Choice to a greater degree than the overall democratic electorate. They do, but as you know the cycle, youve seen leading Democratic Candidates in searching of the Teachers Union endorsement call for a moratorium on the creation of new Charter Schools, and thats the gamut theyre taking x. Mike bloomberg is following their lead. He isnt picking an issue, he isnt distinguishing himself with to how he ran when he was mayor of new york. Paul theres no question on stop and frisk, thats true. But ill tell you on Charter Schools, hes not getting the Teachers Union endorsement. [laughter] so why play there . And instead carve out a different point of view, because bernie or somebody else going to have the union. Id love to see Mike Bloomberg do that, but if you look at his web site, he is running as a progressive, on a 15 minimum wage and gun control and climate change. He is not using his more moderate views to distinguish himself from the pack. At least not right nowment. Paul dan, youve lived under mayor bloomberg here for a while. What do you think of his potential . Well, i think hes got a lot of potential. He does have a proven record of confidence. I mean, its ironic that theyre hitting him on top and frisk. Back in those years and in giuliani years, new york had a very serious crime problem, and stop and frisk once of the policies that brought it under control. Probably needed to be revised or altered a little bit. But to hit him for confidence makes no sense. But thats what the democrats do these days. The main thing though is this money that hes got, and i think one of the arguments hes making to the democrats is that he is willing to use anything it takes, wage total financial war against donald trump across the United States. Whatever ads trump is going to put up, bloomberg would put up three times as many. Hell use social media in a way like no one has ever seen before and simply overwhelm the trump candidacy by suppressing it and demonizing trump. Theyre already doing this by getting into these extraordinary twitter wars with each other. Paul Bernie Sanders is always raising money questions saying i guess if you have 60 billion, you can change the rules, get into the debate, and hes basically making a legitimacy case against bloomberg saying you shouldnt, if you have that much money, just be able to buy your way into the race. Is that going to work . No. [laughter] i mean, it will work with bernies core supporters who take a very purist view on this, and you now hear the other candidates making the same argument, the billionaire buying their way in, its not fair. You know, but heres the thing, is across the Democratic Party the number one issue they care about is beating donald trump. And that, it doesnt matter if youre a white voter, a black voter, latino voter, that is the number one priority. And so for them the number one question for bloomberg, it isnt anything about his policies, its the size of his bank account. And, you know, you see that, he got endorsed by three members of the Congressional Black Caucus this week on the back of this clash over stop and frisk, and they were pretty honest. Mike bloombergs spent a lot of money on causes k and you hear voters saying, look, if this guy says he can beat trump and hes got the money to do it. That is his number one important issue, and you see it with his ads and his rising in the polls. It is helping him. Paul jason, what about dans point that this back and forth between trump, trump calls bloomberg my nebraska mike mini mike, and bloomberg has mocked him as a clown in return. Is that good strategy by bloomberg, to fight back like that . I dont know if the American Public is looking for someone to be a counterpuncher or someone to tone it down a bit. So its a risky strategy on the part of bloomberg, i would say. Dan dan the democrats want it, thats for sure. Paul well, i guess thats right. [laughter] still ahead, attorney general william barr defending his role in the roger stone city as he asks President Trump to stop tweeting about cases. Why the president s comments could end up hurting stones case for leniency, next. They feel that they have to drink a lot of water. Medications seem to be the number one cause for dry mouth. I like to recommend biotene. It replenishes the moisture in your mouth. Biotene definitely works. [heartbeat] t to see like statements and please made about the Department People in the department are men and women here about cases pending in thehe department and about judges for whom we have cases. Make it impossible for me to do my job. Paul a tinny attorney general william bar said tweets and statements about the Justice Department makes itna can possible to do hs job. Roger stone, the officials intervened in the case this week. Overruling the Prosecution Team initial recommendation of seven to nine yearss in prison althoh william barr said he never made the snow. He said the stone had been treated corded horribly were back with dan and kim and jason riley. So kim, why did the attorney general speak up because as you know, the officers to do that or people who work for trump who disagree with him sometimes but their jobs at stake when they do. Kim he had to. Because trump is making it impossible for him to do his job. I love the job he is doing this week was important. What he was doing without having spoken to the white house, was he saw this first sentencing the and its a political feelings because you have these two prosecutors on that case that it work for bob moore and it was an incredibly aggressive sentence. It is not in keeping with the idea that it was a sentence that was designed more to punish roger stone for his affiliation with the president and the Trump Campaign that it was for his crime. And william barr stepped in to fix that situation but with the president tweeting consistently, it gives rise to all these conspiracy theories that somehow trump is engaging and political interference with that is not the case. Olwilliam barr has more importat things to do the president is creating for no good reason. Paul aha the president must be interveningo actually, the attorney general or superiors at the Justice Department essentially secondguessing the prosecutors. It happens all the time especially theres an excessive request for punishment. Kim. Kim absolutely. Thats right. This is absolutely routine. In the suggestion that somehow, the question came up this week paul, other decisions and the department of justice going to be made by unelected career officials. Or we going to allow elections to work and people who are put into office and then cabinet secretaries that are confirmed by the senate. Do they get to set the policies and the rules. And william barr was also making that point. But again, a bit lost because of all of the side issues from the white house. Paul jason, the fascinating response to this on the left. Was it all just staged. That this was trump and more. In the working on the schemed and william barr spoke up they knew they were in trouble and therefore. Jason i think people dont appreciate why william barr took this job. Because he needed a bit he cares about the Justice Department and the integrity of it you saw him acting in that interest. This week. I think that is obvious. Trump is undermining him and is hoping roger stone. This judge is going to decide the sentence. Up she thinks that the politicalng interference, i dont think thats going to work to roger stone advantage. Trump has a role in this process. His goal pardoning roger stone. Until we reach that stage, he should but the process markets course. It. Paul my own view dan, iser that donad trump more than bill barr needs his job. As a risk here that trump keeps it up. Bill barr could quit. Jason i think it would do some damage to President Trump. Indeed to the American People and look, half of the American People think there is something called a deep state by now. Theyth think that deep state resides in the Intelligence Services and the department of justice and the fbi. It is like something out of a tom cruise movie. It is in opposition to the trump presidency. Bill barr is trying to clean up and get rid of the idea that that there is not a deep state. And lovely the report will do some of that. But if bill barr leaves, the deep state will win and it was to be there. And donald trump will is. And that is why he needs to stick it out with bill barr until he is done doing the job the jason suggested that he came into politics to do. Cleanup the deep state. Paul kim, the democrats are saying, this is exactly what we predicted after impeachment. If we hadnt trump contained. And is on the benches tour. Do you think that trump is playing with us. Kim will of course he is playing into it. That is the thing that is a bit mystifying about this. President isthe agreed by the mueller investigation. He has every right to be. I understand that he is very wary and distrustful of the deep state. And he has every right to be. But you have to step back and us yourself what upside is there. To this continuing tweeting. What is he getting out of it. He is notet getting anything. All is he is doing is damaging his attorney general. For the distrust of the bureaucracy, is an obligation to trust his own people that he picked me put into office. They will do the right thing. So he needs help to just step back. A new kind of investor is changing things up. [ indistinct talking ] with an app thats changing the way we do money. Download robinhood now. At the mercy of the Chinese Government. They release what they want to release. Theres a split, apparently, into the World Health Organization in yes neva, whether to believe what the chinese are saying or not. The debate seems to break down to when the coronavirus to was discovered, late november, early december, what happened then in i hate to use this term phase one paul of bringing bad news up to beijg and saying, look, this is really bad. And we have to be honest about it. That seems to be is have really hurt x. Even ive each heard, you might know whether this is true, a lot of americans who negotiated the trade deal think that the chinese knew even when the phase one negotiation with the president was underway, that it was going to be worse. And they were saying i havent heard that, but its clear that the origins of the virus being discovered by the chinese themselves does not track with what theyre saying to us. Is so these eight doctors youre referring to that originally blew the whistle, you might say, in early december, they were accused under this vague law of spreading rumors. Its a criminal offense to post this kind of thing online. So the origins of the virus, when it was first detected, the turning down of the american who teams asking for help, thats part of it. Theres a third part which is the chinese power struggle that, you know, theyre celebrating next year their 100th anniversary. And when you study the communist party 100year history, its really about power struggle. I hate to say it this way, they often kill each other. 1971, Henry Kissinger arrived in october. The Chinese Military was basically had killed the top seven or eight generals x chinas Vice President had been killed. We americans knew nothing about this for another couple of months. So they can conceal power struggle as its going on. Maybe everythings table in china and shi xi jinping is toty in control of the virus, but maybe not. He disappeared from public view for almost two weeks recently. Thats very strange in chinese politics. Now hes appeared wearing a mask and asserting more personal responsibility. Paul let me put this into some context here. Youve had the uprising in hong kong which certainly has prune to be a proven to be a challenge. Some dissent over the interments, up to a Million People in one province yes. Paul and theres been leaks out of the Chinese Government critical of xi jinping on that. Now you have the handling of the coronavirus where theres been an awful lot of criticism across the country on chat rooms, so much so in china that theyve had to suppress so many of those comments. How much of a challenge to xi jinpings rule are we seeing here . I think its a senate challenge. What apparently significant challenge. What apparently is one of the key issues how much to trust the United States of america. China has long had hardliners, to see degree the majority now in the leadership, it demonizes america. They see everything we do as something thats designed to overthrow the communist party or somehow split up china reformers. And if you heard Bob Lighthizer talk about it, he said the trade deal depends con chinas reformers on chinas reformers. So so this hardliner versus reformer debate is something weve been following for a long time. But its hard to tell if the reformers are still active and animated and can do something. So far that the American Team cannot get in after five weeks really concerns me. Paul well, so you have the president of the United States saying hes never had a better relationship with the chinese leader, mike pompeo, the secretary of state, saying in speeches that, in fact, china is a strategic adversary, and we very to challenge it with more aggressive policies. Whats the real u. S. Policy here . Well, it can be woven into a larger framework, or which President Trump likes to talk about a lot. He says if hillary had won the election, china would be surpassing us during her term, but its not going to happen on his watch, President Trump says. So he has an image of china as closing in on us, challenging us for primacy in the world. And his solution, hes talked about out for more than 20 years, resip proprocall trade, reciprocal basically everything. So what youll see in the speeches by Vice President pence, secretary pompeo, President Trumps own comment about which you accurately quote that this is the best relationship anybodys ever had with china, you see the consistency is we want reciprocity from china. But they are not giving it. The trade deal had to be guided into two phases because they wouldnt give us the main concessions that President Trump was seeking. Paul all right. Its going to be fascinating to watch this evolving relationship. Thank you, michael pillsbury. Ing. Thanks, paul. Paul attorney general william barr this week announced a significant escalation in the Trump Administration efforts to crack down on socalled sanctuary cities, arguing those jurisdictions are unconstitutionally interfering with federal law and jeopardizing domestic security. The Justice Department is suing the states off new jersey and california as well as king county in Washington State claiming that their sanctuary policies are obstructing theic administrations Immigration Enforcement efforts. Were back with dan henninger, jason riley and allysia finley. What are the states specifically doing that counters federal law . Of these sanctuary cities or states are just not cooperating when the federal government issues the detainer w which is when a criminal or someone who is arrested by state and local officers is in jail and the police are ready to release these people, theyre supposed to notify the federal government, i. C. E. , so they can pick them up and take them to federal facilities paul and deport them. Deport them, right. They are just refusing to do that. Ulomt have explicitare policies now in doing. And then you have this principle city clause argument supremacy clause argument especially in areas like immigration which is a federal prerogative. Paul this is a law passed be by congress that is, that trumps these local jurisdictions and that sort of thing. Paul what about the politics of this . Is there some politics that the administration thinks this is good politics lives. This is about just deporting criminals. Paul jason . I dont see how we can have a system where state and local officialss only enforce those laws that they agree with. I mean, thats insane. [laughter]r] paul well, what about civil disobedience . That has a history this was the 1960 where private citizens are sitting at a lunch counter, paul. These are elected officials sworn to uphold the haw who are the law who are actively undermining it. You cant have illegal immigrant sanctuaries any more than you can have Second Amendment sanctuaries with gun laws. Paul and andrew cuomo protesting the administration suspended the trusted Traveler Program because the t dhs says that the Homeland Security says new yorks not providing enough information. Yeah. They cant get enough data to do that sort of thing, so they suspended it with new york. I think whats going on here is part of a larger democratic idea called decriminal which is this fact that the which is to stack the criminal Justice System in favor of criminals. New yorkte state just passed a bail reform law, socalled, that is putting criminals on the street who are committing new crimes. I think this should be more understood not so much about immigration, as about law and order. And the democrats have decided toto get on the wrong side of that, and i think jasons right, its a Strong Political issue for the republicans and donald trump. Paul what about the politics of immigration here . The democrats want to make it about immigration andnd say this is part of the administrations larger antiimmigration politics. I mean, i think thats exactly true, but i think republicans and President Trump would actually be helped if he suggested some sort of compromise for dreamers to legalize the young adults who came here illegally when they were or were brought here illegally when they were children. And not take such a hard line on some other issues like the public charge rule that basically seeks to bar any low income immigrants in coming into the cup. Paul we have to take one more break. When we come back, hits and misses of the week. Cut. Well dub it. Liberty mutual customizes your Car Insurance so you only pay for what you need. Only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. I wager that i disagree with about 95 percent of policy issues with mr. Yang. Nonetheless, it was a candidate who with his quirky plan for universal basic income, he must consistently thought outside of democratic orthodoxy and he was also the guy who most consistently reminded his party the disney or the state to be more about donald trump and a need to be about these issues. So lets hope his fellow candidates remember those words of wisdom.
