woke up with a splitting headache and i side of my head. i couldn't remember who i was. >> so he just started walking two weeks later he traveled a thousand miles. tonight, the remarkable story of a senior citizen's survival and how his own wife helped him get back his memory. but first from fox this monday night, a 30-minute long gun battle just off the campus of texas a&m university. a man barricade in his home with an automatic weapon, they tell us, shooting at police and everyone else in sight. it started when a sheriff's constable showed up to evict a man from his home. but the man inside started shooting. when the gun fight during a lunch hour finally ended, the suspect, the officer and one civilian were all dead and others hurt. the bullets blasted through the neighborhood in college station just about two blocks from kyle field at texas a and m. e bush drive. the university responded with an alert that warned of an active shooter right by that football stadium and instructed students and faculty to stay away. meantime, more officers rushed to that scene. >> there was a constable down in the front yard. as additional officers began to respond to the location, they were able to engage the gunman they ended up shooting the gunman and taking him into custody we all went outside to see what was going on. we heard three pops go off. i'm getting that's when the policemen were shooting the shooter. >> that shooter died from his wounds. we have blurred the faces here of the family members for their privacy. another civilian a 65-year-old man shot and killed. two other people shot, one civilian, one police officer. this is at least the third mass shooting we have seen within the month. james holmes is accused of murdering 12 people and wounding dozens others at a theater in aurora, colorado in july. earlier this month wade michael page skilled 6 before killing himself at a sikh temple in oak creek, wisconsin. now this latest incident. right off 00 college campus at texas a&m where gunshots again shattered apiece and bullets again left innocent americans dead on the ground. casey stegall has been tracking this from our west coast news room. do we know anything about this shooter. >> all police are saying at this hour a man in his 30's, his name, whether or not he he had any type of a criminal background is not being released at this point. who we are learning more about the 41-year-old constable brian bachmann survived by his wife and young children. he has been a sheriff's deputy in texas since 1993. >> as you can imagine, as close as he was to all the officers in this area, these are the officers that are having to work this case. and work through not only the motions but all the details that are required to make sure we have a good understanding as to why this incident occurred. >> now, three college station police officers were also injured. one shot, two others hurt while trying to get to the scene. but we're told they are doing okay tonight, shepard. >> shepard: didn't realize this afternoon as this was happening, casey, police are now saying there was more than one crime scene here. >> yeah. investigators say there are a total of four crime scenes. all located in the same vicinity because so many bullets were sprayed. and this whole ordeal, they say it's going to take some time to investigate all of those. but the casings all around the direction of the home, one man who took cover in the bed of his pickup truck when these shots rang out said it sounded to him like semiautomatic gunfire, shepard. >> shepard: casey casey stegall in our west coast news hub tonight. today the judge refused to unseal documents from the university of colorado about the shooting suspect scene here james holmes. he dropped out of that school's ph.d. program a few weeks before police say he opened fire at a midnight screening of the batman movie. several news organizations cliewcketd ours requested that the court release those documents arguing that the public will will be left in the dark otherwise. the judge says releasing that information could still threaten the suspect's right to a fair trial. on the campaign trail tonight, it's the battle of the bus tours. governor romney hit the road in florida as his new running mate went off on his own for the first time in iowa. where president obama happened to be kicking off a road trip of his own. congressman paul ryan visited the state fair in des moines today. the president was not there. but congressman ryan asked the locals to send a message for him. >> but as you see the president come through on his bus tour, you might ask him the same question that i'm getting asked from people all around america. and that is where are the jobs, mr. president? >> shepard: we'll hear what the president has to say about congressman ryan in just a moment. americans are almost evenly split on governor romney's choice for a v.p. it would appear. at least according to a new abc "the washington post" poll. look at the before and after numbers. congressman ryan's favorable number has jumped 15 points since governor romney introduced him on saturday. a campaign report it's raised a million bucks to boot. ed henry is on the president's bus tour iowa. we'll get to him. carl cammeron riding along with romney bus riding along in miami. tonight you asked the governor to respond to the democrats who say that he and congressman ryan are radical and extreme. >> yeah. when mitt romney got off the plane here in miami at the tarmac he held one of the rare availabilities. the campaign says they are going to make him more accessible to the press. this is an exercise in that. i asked him given president obama on the democrat's assertion that paul ryan's budget and medicare reforms are radical and extreme and, therefore, romney is a radical and extreme for having embraced mr. ryan as his running mate, what was his response? mitt romney teed off. listen to this. >> can i tell you what's radical and extreme is to spend a trillion dollars more every year than you take in. it's radical and extreme to pass on trillions of dollars of debts to our children. knowing that we're never going to pay back these obligations that we have taken on. and representative ryan has worked very hard to find ways to see if we can't get on track towards a balanced budget. >> two more times fellow reporters asked mr. romney if there were differences between himself and the ryan budget, how they would put together their proposals as well as for medicare and the federal budget. romney said there probably were some differences but frankly he hadn't studied them and asked repeatedly to renumerous rate any dehe declined saying he was more in line with mr. ryan than out of line. shep? >> shepard: after traveling with new running mate today the governor was solo, how did he do? >> pretty well. it's clear that campaigning with ryan for the last 48 hours has had an effect on him. we saw it it on the campaign trail he was more animated energized. he held a solo rally saint augustine up near georgia and he was very very feisty. in many ways much the same way he was when ryan was around. his aides are hoping that it's sort of rubbing off. listen. >> it's smear, it's dirt. it's distortion. it's deception. it's dishonesty. it diminishes the office of the presidency itself. >> at another event today, mr. romney said that the president should come out of the gutter and try to start running a cleaner campaign and discuss the actual issues. a clear example from romney and the ryan campaign that what they are trying to do is tackle the real challenges of the country and get past the day-to-day partisan attacking. which is not to say they are going to have plenty of things to say about the obama administration. just that they will be able to talk about the positive solutions they are offering, shep? >> shepard: carl cammeron offering the romney angle. as for the president he is accusing congressman ryan of blocking help for farmers in iowa and dealing with the worst drought in century. today lawmakers left washington for august vacation without passing a new farm bill. >> i am told that governor romney's new running mate, paul ryan, might be around iowa the next few days. [ doctor ] enbrel, the number one biolog medicine prescribed by rheumatologists. >> shepard: a 71-year-old man says he walked and hitchhiked 1,000 miles after he hit his head and forgot who he was. we now know his name is hugh armstrong he lives in north carolina. but he was on vacation in new hampshire when he says he fell during a walk and knocked himself out. armstrong says when he woke up, he couldn't remember much of anything, but for some reason he felt he had to start heading southwest. >> so, i started walking and, when i got down to the major road, -- i knew which way was south, then i knew which way was west. >> shepard: after leaving new hampshire he says he remembers stacking hay for a farmer in pennsylvania. then hitching a ride to virginia. before somehow winding up back in his home state of north carolina. there, this retired ibm employee was in a mcdonald's when he he said he heard somebody mention his granddaughter's first name. he says that triggered a memory. and he began walking down a highway looking for family. instead, a sheriff's deputy found him on that road at 1:30 in the morning saturday. and identified him as the missing person. armstrong had made it within 240 miles of his home. and he tolls us when his wife showed up to get him, he recognized her and his car immediately. and he described that moment as shear elation. he also says more of his memory has started to come back. >> i know who i am but as things are talked about, each thing that's talked about, brings back more memory. >> shepard: wow, can you imagine? armstrong says he scheduled an appointment with a neurologist but adds the scans he has had so far show everything is just fine now. i'm shepard smith. this is the fox report. it's the bottom of the hour, top for the top of the news. the president and congressman paul ryan are going at it over their budget plans. the new republic vice presidential candidate has challenged the president on spending in the past. today, congressman ryan got a preview of what he might faces a the vice presidential debate. rich edson from the fox business network is live for us in washington. i believe he is in the cube tonight. indeed he is hello. how different is congressman paul ryan's budget from the president's, rich? >> both campaigns say they offer two distinct choices and they are not kidding. significant differences on taxes, spending, and the role of government. very broad oversue shows budget committee chairman paul ryan's plan spends about $40 trillion over the next decade. takes in taxes and revenues of 37 trillion and adds more than 3 trillion to the national debt. over 10 years president obama's latest budget spends about 47 trillion, brings in 40 trillion in revenue and increases the national debt by more than 6.5 trillion. republics say that means tax increases and unsustainable government spending. democrats say the details of the ryan plan gut vital government services, shep. >> shepard: vice president biden got into this debate today, rich. >> he did. and the vice president welcomed ryan to the campaign trail by knocking the republic economic plan. >> what is gutsy about giving millionaires another tax break. what's gutsy about gutting medicare, medicaid, education? what's gutsy? >> president obama has given you was four years of trillion-dollar plus deficits is he making marries worse and spending our children into a diminished future. >> tomorrow, ryan campaigns in colorado. biden in virginia. two states up for grabs in november. shep? >> rich edson on capitol hill. rich, thank you. as the candidates bicker in iowa over who could best help the farmers, world leaders are tackling the drought's fallout. global food prices are rising as corn and soybeans die on the vine literally. officials from the united states, france and mexico say they are preparing for a possible emergency meeting to avoid the sort of riots we saw four years ago when food prices spiked in developing countries. analyst duties not expect any big changes from such a meeting. it's likely to open major debate over food vs. fuel. right now the u.s. uses around 40% of corn to make biofuels. something the critics say is just flat wrong when people in poor countries are starving. get the latest on the drought from janice dean meteorologist in extreme weather center. >> it's actually gotten worse in the highest hit drought areas. extreme to exceptional drought across the central u.s. last week over 2 a% of the country into extreme or exceptional drought this week up 3%. a little bit of good news this week, shepard. we have got cooler temperatures arriving across the hardest hit areas. the jesus' jet stream a little f a dip there a little bit of moisture. not enough to make a huge difference in the drought but they will take what they can get as you can see the pattern change is going to bring several inches to areas that really need it. a quick look at the radar right now on top of the drought monitor can you see the hardest hit areas but across the ohio river valley, mississippi river valley. the southeast, you are getting in on some of this much needed moisture and over the four corners region. a little bit of good news, shepard, i know they need it tonight across the heartland. back to you. >> shepard: no doubt. it's mighty hot out there, janice. unusually hot water off the coast of connecticut forcing officials to shut down a power plant that supplies electricity to half the state and 12% of new england. this is the first time in the plant's 37 year history that this shut down has happened. apparently the sea water temperature is averaging for man 75 degrees. way too warm to cool the plant's key components. officials are blaming extreme summer heat and the mild winter but the regional power grid operator reports it has enough reserves to cover the loss at least for now. a new report indicate robo signing is back and this time credit card companies may be the culprits. according to the report fing the names newspaper, companies including american express, citigroup and discover are going to court to recover credit debt. but many of the lawsuits rely on falsified documents and incomplete records you will recall earlier this year the mortgage providers settled with the feds and the attorney general the tune of $25 billion. came after accusations the banks had taken shortcuts, including robo signing of thousands of documents to speed up the foreclosure process. the fox business network's gerri willis is with us now. a judge in new york says the problem here, there is a big problem in all these credit card cases. >> that's right. says nine out of 10 cases in fact have some kind of error or problem with them. the credit card companies say they are not at fault. pressure express say we strongly disagree with judge's comments and good practice. american has strong process in place ensure testimony and affidavits provided to courts. >> how big a problem is credit card debt these days? [gunfire] >> got is good they are saying. plane had a technical failure and the pilot ejected. the rebels claim they hit the jet with gunfire from the ground and later they say they captured the pilot. of course, it's impossible for us to confirm which story is accurate. if either. if it's true that the rebels shot down the fighter jet. it does mark a major set back for the syrian regime. reports indicate syria's leaders have started relying more on air force to try to quash an uprising that's gone on for a year and a half. estimate more than 21,000 people have died in that uprising so far. the pope's former butler is set to face trial now for stealing secret documents from the vatican. the vatican claims he leaked hundreds of those documents. here he is with the pope. according to the indictment, the former butler said he saw evil and corruption everywhere in the church believed the pope was in the dark about it. the former butler faces up to six years in prison for aggravated theft. since the vatican has no prison he would serve the sentence in an italian jail barring a pardon from the pope. survivors are reportedly outraged that their government has called off search and rescue efforts less than two days after earthquakes killed more than 300 people. that tops our news around the world in 80 "around the world in 80 seconds." iran. the first quake a magnitude 6.4 hit saturday morning in the northwest. the u.s. geological survey reports the second one, a magnitude 6.3 struck 11 minutes later. dozens of aftershocks followed. state media reports the quakes destroyed more than 20 villages. officials have calmed off the search for survivors.
