Responded around 5 30 a. M. To a report of gunfire and when they arrived they found an rv playing a recording warning that a bomb would detonate in 15 minutes. They called the bomb squad and soon after the rv exploded, knocking one officer off their feet. Police say they now have a photo saying this is the rv that exploded on Second Avenue north. Police say its unclear if anyone was in the rv and as a precaution, they brought in dogs to search for other devices. We are searching the downtown area just as a precaution to make sure that everyone is safe and any service that is needed to, we can provide that. With that said, we dont feel there is any concern in the downtown area right now. Mike Authorities Say three people went to the hospital though none are in critical condition. Police say the explosion shattered glass, knock down trees and damaged buildings. Early this morning the acting attorney general jeff rosen directed federal resources to nashville. The fbi is leading the investigation with the atf and the local police. Other Law Enforcement officials are expected to arrive in the coming days. The driver parked the rv and downtown in a major tourist area and in front of the at t building. At t says the explosion damaged its facilities affecting service for some of its customers in the area. In Nashville Airport Authority said it halted flights this afternoon because of the absorption. Some have resumed but they say they still have issues there. Also several nearby cities have reported that they are 911 lines are down. Mike still so many questions hours after this blast, rich. Its miraculous that more people were not killed or wounded. Clearly the attacker did not want a mass casualty attack and to kill a lot of people. Exactly. This is downtown, this is very close to the heart of downtown where there are bars and restaurants. You can go to restaurants in nashville, they are 50 occupied because of cobid but this is something that according to police, the vehicle arrived a little after one or 120 this morning and by 5 30 a. M. , there were reports of guns fired downtown. Its unclear who called in the warning or if there were gunshots but thats what police say they were responding to downtown. They got there and about an hour later is when the explosion went off. There is Residential Housing downtown so police did have to clear people who were living downtown. Hotels, bars and restaurants. Not necessarily that bars and restaurants will be opened at five or six on Christmas Day but still the timing of all this, this is an area that can be very busy and was not at this time. Mike rich edson starting us off tonight. Many thanks. President trump is spending his christmas in florida and we are told he has been briefed on the blast in nashville. Correspondent Mark Meredith is in West Palm Beach with the latest from the president. Good evening, mark. Good evening to you mike. The white house has a president was briefed not long after the explosion and in a statement he offered his support to Law Enforcement and also prayers to those injured in the blast. The president has not spoken on camera about what happened in nashville and we dont think hes going to. The white house already calling saying he is not expected to make an on camera statement. We have heard from the new acting attorney general, and he put out a statement this morning that said, the acting attorney general jeff rosen was briefed on the nashville incident this morning and it directed that all doj resources be made available to assist in the investigation. About an hour ago the president elect also put out a statement about this incident. We are hearing from joe biden. President elect biden has been briefed on the explosion in nashville and the president and dr. Biden think all the First Responders today in which those who were injured a speeding speedy recovery. Members of tennessees congressional delegation have been speaking out saying they will offer all the resources they can to state and local officials on the ground in tennessee. Mike, we will wait to see if the president has more reaction to this as the day goes on. Mike we expect the president to get more briefings on the situation in nashville. Theres also the huge policy issue involving legislation passed by congress. You have the covid relief package of about 900 billion or so and you also have this omnibus package to keep the government running from late night monday night through the end of the fiscal year. Any sense at this point if the president plans to approve or veto this tumulus package that congress sent his way . I guess thats the 900 billion question right now. No indication from the president about what he plans to do about this, whether veto or sign. But there are lots of questions about what this will mean because its not just stimulus checks tied to it. If the deal is not reached and the president s unsuspected congress. This was a deal that was negotiated by his own treasury secretary and there was no indication until late tuesday that the president was not going to sign it. He has not said he will veto it but he said he wants the checks to be a lot larger that would go out to some americans. Congressional republicans are not likely to support that idea but the president was also not happy with the amount of foreign aid included in the larger government budget so we will see with the president chooses to do next. Lets start with what did you hear about 5 30 or so this morning . I was sleeping in and i heard some gunfire coming from outside of the window on Second Avenue. I live just above the Old Spaghetti factory on Second Avenue. I got up and looked out the window but didnt see anything. I saw there was some snow on the cars so i went back into my sleeping area of my studio apartment and heard more gunfire. I didnt get up this time, i thought theres nothing i can do about it. Then about 10 minutes i heard and felt the most incredible explosion ever. It completely demolished my entire apartment. Everything i own was ripped apart. The windows were blown into the second part of the studio apartment and my door was actually completely unhinged and bent wide open. I gathered myself, got some clothes on and tried to figure out what the heck could possibly be going on. Then i just moved down the hallway and started videotaping because i didnt know what if we were going to have another explosion so i just videotaped what was going on and streamed that live. When i got downstairs into the street it was a nightmare. It looks like a movie. All the windows had been blown out to come up the engulfed in fire across the street. People were coming out, they were in shock. They were holding their animals and a few things. It was unbelievable. Mike Christmas Morning, first thing, crack of dawn. And you get this alarming panic to wake up. Can you talk about interaction with you and your neighbors . I saw people coming out crying and another person was comforting his girlfriend, she had her dog. I was downstairs at the time and i thought i better go get my cat because i cant stay here any longer. But i couldnt get her, she was freaked out. You know how animals are. The firemen came up at the stole stairwell at that point and told me i had to leave immediately. I had to leave her. I dont know whats going on, they wont let us anywhere near whats going on over there so i was just able to get out of there with the clothes on my back. If i had been standing in front of that window during the explosion, theres just no way anyone could have survived that. Mike give us a sense of what you are going to do. You talked about your apartment being trashed and your belongings been destroyed, how do you pick up the pieces . This is such a crazy thing to happen because we are such a small little city here in nashville. We got our little honkytonk send our community of musicians and we are kind of a tightknit group of people. But there is literally nothing left of my apartment, every single piece of equipment, my guitar, everything i owned was completely ruined. So i really dont know. At this point im going to take a moment by moment. I got some great friends that are keeping me at their place right now just down the street from where ground zero is and im just going to have to take it day by day here and figure it out. But i am so glad i had a Christmas Angel and that i was not near that window. Its just amazing that nobody got killed. Amazing. Former secret service, supervised supervisory special agent, and ted williams is a former homicide detective. Gentlemen, welcome. Charles, your thoughts initially based on what youve seen and what youve heard so far . Yeah. So what im hearing and i think what everyone else is seeing is that this investigation is being worked vigorously and, especially the crime scene right now. The fbi and atf are taking the lead here through the j. T. Tf infrastructure, the joint Terrorism Task force. This is a nationwide task force consisting of state and local Law Enforcement agencies which allow the fbi to quickly scale investigations based on any Investigative Lead that may come out of nashville related to this case across the country. They are looking for identifying information right now and we are starting to see a Surveillance Video coming out in the case of the rv. We are also starting to see the identification of things like license plates, vehicle identification numbers, the materials that have been news here as well as eyewitness accounts like the Previous Report that you just had to. Mike your thoughts at this point from what youve seen, what you heard and what youve read about the incident . Clearly what has happened here can be considered and defined as a christmas miracle. Here it is at 1 22 a. M. In the morning, and there is this rv that is seen in that neighborhood on Second Street there. As you know, Law Enforcement has put out a picture of that vehicle they are trying to get the public engaged in helping out here but, i hesitate to say that this is not what one would define as an International Terrorist or domestic terrorist act. There is somebody that wanted to make a statement. Law enforcement is trying to find out what in fact a motive was behind that. Thats part of the investigation and i believe that Law Enforcement is a lot more than theyve led on to hear, and video cameras throughout that area will be very beneficial and helpful. Mike charles, pick up on what he just sat there. What about a motive, any sense at this point . They could be anything. We know that Critical Infrastructure was impacted in terms of communications. There is an at t location on that block and we know that that impacted 911. We know that there was a call prior to the explosion about shots fired. It was not a way to have an overwhelming Law Enforcement response to the location . In other words, was at some type of set up or ambush . Now youve got the primary explosive concern to worry about and that Law Enforcement has a secondary concern, which we saw them searching for earlier. So really, this could go a number of ways in terms of motive. But to teds point, this could be a lon lone wolf actor that ss tactics here in terms of the vehicle explosive device and carried out the attack here but has no direct ties to any domestic or international groups. Mike lets play for our audience with the Nashville Police chief had to say about it. We are sweeping the downtown area just as a precaution to make sure that everyone is safe and any services that are needed to come we can provide that. With that said we dont feel there is any concern in the downtown area of anything else right now. Mike ted, your response to that . Mike, i think the chief is signaling to the community there that they are pretty well secure and safe. I think as ive said before, Law Enforcement has a great deal more than they have let onto out there. So as a result of that they may, not saying they do, but they may very well have a suspect or suspects in their eyesight right now. I would have to believe that they know who the owner is of that vehicle whether it was a rental vehicle and they would have to know certainly who drove it there. And they perhaps have video feed that shows who got out of that vehicle, if anybody got out of that vehicle. I see that simply because there was supposedly a recording that was sent to Law Enforcement from that vehicle 15 minutes before the explosion. If that materialized, there could be a possibility that someone perished in that vehicle. We do not know that, thats clearly a part of the investigation at this stage. Mike charles, we have a few seconds left but your reaction to the recording telling people, if you can hear this, get out . Its all very interesting. I think it ties to motive, what the intent is. You could have had a lone actor or small group here, that was very focused on hitting a specific target in that neighborhood and actually did have some real concerns about the Immediate Impact on human life. The interesting thing is, if thats the case then why use an explosive device so large . We are looking at over 20 buildings that have been ruled structurally inefficient right now so we are talking about a large volume of materials here that caused a rather large crime scene and like ted said earlier we are very lucky that this occurred on the day that it did and the time that it did. You just listened to what appears to be that explosion that rocked nashville earlier this morning. Breaking right now the Associated Press is reporting that sources have told them authorities have found human remains in the vicinity of the explosion in downtown nashville. At this hour police are asking for more information on this rv. If you have any information they are asking you to call crime stoppers. Right now the focus moves to the investigation. On the phone i have former assistant fbi director Chris Swecker on where the investigation goes from here. I know its still early, but what is your initial reader based on your experience . We are ten hours into this now and the first couple of hours would have been spent securing the crime scene, its a very large crime scene that secure, making sure there are no secondary devices. What they are looking for is the vehicle identification number, tag on the car or any paraphernalia or anything that you can find that might identify people that are associated with the car. One team will be looking for videos, and this will be an fbi led effort, by the way, until they rule out terrorism. Under their Team Processes the scene forensically looking for the type of high explosives and swabbing nearby areas and parts to see what kind of explosive was used. They will be looking for the detonator device, pieces of it, whether it was remotely detonated or detonated by timer. There are a lot of teams divided up here, each one specializing in a certain area and all that information will funnel into one place to put pieces of the puzzle together. Mike chris, make it your reaction to the breaking news of the possibility that human remains were found somewhere around the scene. Is it possible this was all a very elaborate suicide . That is a possibility. The car was parked they are supposedly at 1 30 a. M. In the detonation was around 6 30. You could have been an accidental detonation. Premature or, someone was trying to commit suicide, or dont have enough details, it couldve been someone that was nearby. Mike lets play with the fbi is saying at the scene from earlier today. The fbi stands with the city of nashville today in this very tragic Christmas Day event. This is our city, too. We live here and we work here. I think what they are looking for, thats a pretty distinctive rv. Someone has seen that rv. Once you get it out there someone will call and if they havent already. I will go out on a limb here and say that i think the fbi and Investigative Team here are on to some very strong leaves as we speak and they are very astutely not putting that out right now. Mike that recording telling people, if they can hear it to evacuate, what does that tell you about the suspect behind the attack . My background, i spent some time in iraq working bombings there. Terrorists are looking for a mass casualty is. You dont put out a warning and say get out of the area if you are trying to inflict mass casualties here. The time of day also, 6 30 a. M. For the detonation, it just tells me that this is more of a domestic matter. Its either a criminal matter, and elaborate suicide as you mentioned, or a crime. Maybe somebody had a beef against at t or a nearby building, disgruntled employee, there are quite a few possibilities. But i would hedge here and rule out international terrorism. We are about a quarter mile up the road from where that massive exploiters explosion went off this evening, but they have essentially blocked off that explosion area for safety and investigative reasons. You can hear that warning, warning people to evacuate the area, then moments later you see the rv explode into flames. Right now authorities are looking for any information they can find about the explosion. Not too long ago, metro Nashville Police released this photo of the rv. They say it arrived at Second Avenue north in downtown nashville around 1 22 a. M. Before police say it was deliberately blown up. You can see the damage caused by the massive explosion in this video taken by a resident. We are told that trees were knocked down and windows were blown out. The force of the blast also caused structural damage to several buildings in the area. Metro Nashville Police originally responded to reports of shots fired around 5 30 local time this morning. When officers arrived they said they saw the suspicious rv and said it was playing a recording warning that a bomb with detonated in 15 minutes. As you saw a few moments ago the rv exploded. Police say its unclear at the moment what caused the explosion. We are hearing reports that an individual was inside during the explosion and police are obviously investigating that right now, and with an abundance of caution they brought in bomb sniffing dogs to search the area to see if there are any more devices nearby. We are told three people were injured in that explosion and transported to area hospitals. At least one of those victims is expected to be just fine and be released later tonight. The Justice Department has diverted resources to the scene and the investigation with more Law Enforcement officials to come. Its obviously im christmas miracle or us of sorts that more people were not injured. There are lots of bars and restaurants that people usually frequent. Obviously with a pandemic going on that probably wasnt the case last night and probably worked out for the best. It could have been done in a way that injured a lot more people, only a few people will were injured and hopefully they will all get better. When it comes to Law Enforcement, the fact that the fdi and the atf are involved will probably speed along the investigation. Because they have so much expertise in dealing with something very unusual desk, an enormous explosion that could have injured a lot more people, in a town with a population of 700,000 people. Its truly a miracle that more people were not injured or killed. Now, we have the video of the rv. Thats going to go out to the general population. Someone may come forward to. You heard today Law Enforcement asking the public to call in with tips and that suggests to me that they are starting really from nothing and they need some information. Usually what happens in situations like this is a tip will come in in the coming days when people get a look at that video, someone will know this person if it was in fact a suicide. Someone will have a connection there and that is what the first clue will be. It could be one of those cases where hopefully they are able to quickly close it and figure out what happened rather than being worried about it occurring somewhere again because its still a great mystery as to why it happened in the first place. Mike its a very unique looking vehicle, not your normal midsized rental car. Josh, what are your thoughts . Susans right, there are so many unknowns right now to the point where we havent had a reaction from the president on twitter, its been a muted response to the administration and the biden transition. We dont know whether we have heard at this hour that there could have been remains near the vehicle, there could have been the suspect or the perpetrator, was it just it a Suicide Attack or political motivation . On the timing to do it on Christmas Morning with the likelihood of not many people around but sending an awful lot of explosives and doing a whole lot of damage, that raises the question of what this perpetrator was about. Mike tom, understandably we saw nashvilles mayor on the scene. We know President Trump has been briefed and president elect to joe biden has been briefed as well. When should we hear something more from our National Leadership about the situation in nashville . Is it a time for a comforter in chief type statement . I dont know. Hard to say. Without knowing much of anything about whats going on, it would be tough for either biden or trump to say anything. Obviously they both thanked First Responders and Law Enforcement, theyve done to her old job thus under difficult circumstances on a holiday so i think that sort of where we stand. As we learn and find out more, you might hear something from trump because he has said some things in the past like we will find and bring these people to justice, sort of a law and order message. But until we know more its hard to say. Mike susan, do you expect the president to go to nashville on his way back from maralago at some point . Do we know if the case has been cleared otherwise . Heres what i think will happen. I think the fbi and atf will be able to determine quickly whether or not this is an act of terrorism and if you they do see signs of that than you are more likely to see the president get involved, its something that affects us all. This has all the signs of something that may not be terrorism because clearly the hallmark of that attack is not to warn people. As we know there was that very strange morning, the timing was not set for maximum damage or maximum injury. A kind of suggests that this may be Something Different and it could be as we are all guessing some kind of suicide. Something like that, im not sure if we will see the president get involved. I think what we know is that there was an explosion. We tried to push more into it and inspected and find out what kind of materials are used, and the one thing i will say, ive talked to other experts and i believe this probably was not an actual explosive, probably some sort of fuel or pyrotechnic which is no just as bad. Its what they did to cause the explosion that allows investigators to go a different route, tracking their purchases and backtracking their steps to find out what kind of person and what type of Knowledge Base they had in doing this. Mike ted to come as a former Police Officer we understand a curfew is in place for that immediate area from tonight until sometime on sunday. Does that make a whole lot at this point . Yes, it certainly does until they can try to determine what was the motive and who was behind this. But ive got to tell you from the last time we have spoken, mike, until now, and finding out that human remains may have been found in the area, it gives me more of a perhaps understanding of what perhaps may be taking place here. I really now believe it was not domestic terrorist related or International Terrorist related. I think clearly if human remains were found, those human remains could be associated with the person who actually drove that car there. My rationale or the rv there. My rationale for making that representation is, we know that when Law Enforcement got on the scene, they heard what they believed to be a recording, warning people to get out of the area. So as a result of that people were able to move away from the area and i think whoever did this was not interested in harming people but in making a statement and it could very well be the person who drove that vehicle there, that those human remains belong to. Mike charles, you have an extensive federal Law Enforcement background. What are your expectations as you look ahead to a briefing at the top of the hour from the fbi they are on the scene in nashville. Are they going to try to lower the temperature a bit obviously for a very anxious community there . Thats a great question. Its a very large crime scene, now you have the discovery of the body and the remains that may or may not be the suspect. Theres still a lot more work that needs to take place here and they need to figure out what was it just a suicide or a targeted attack on Critical Infrastructure or another intent there where the suspect based on ideology and because decided to take his own life in conjunction with that. I think they will still play the, a little bit close to the vest here as there are still more work to do and i think the discovery of the remains of just makes it a little more complicated in that sense, in terms of releasing information to soon. Mike joey, i covered the Oklahoma City bombing back in the mid90s. It striking to me about this is, there was an effort they are to take as many human lives as possible. In this one it seems like the perpetrator wanted to reduce the loss of human life. Your thoughts . You know this was a tactic that we saw, when you say whether or not this was domestic terrorism, well something blew up so its going to terrorize people. Now we are talking about whether that was the intent of the person. Is it a personal vendetta against it entity or may be a political statement . The truth is when you blow something up you are out there trying to cause destruction or send a message and its up to the investigators to decide the motive of the person or persons who did this. What i will tell you is to come the oh, city bombing, an actual explosive. Only about onetenth of the explosive there actually blew up, and it was the dispersant of the rest of it that led to Timothy Mcveigh getting caught. In this specific instance it doesnt appear that there is large infrastructure damage which leads me to believe that perhaps this was an actual explosive which means the person doing it may or may not have had as much understandable resources and all of those are things that investigators will use to figure out who this isnt what exactly they were trying to accomplish. And this is why we should have the utmost respect for these Law Enforcement officers that i put the lives on the line every day because the Law Enforcement officers here, once i found out about this bomb, they immediately evacuated the area and did their job very well.
