But maliki has no plans to step down and has accused president massoum about carrying out a coup. A lot going on. Lets talk about details on the ground. First, eric, is the United States drawing deeper into a war in iraq . Well, i dont think so. If you listened to president obama on saturday morning, about 10 30, basically said thats what were going to do continue the humanitarian aid. Were going to target air strikes against isis areas which they did. Seemed to have worked. I talked about this earlier, im getting beaten up. I think its right, though, 20,000 people have come off that mountain so far and the rest are on their way down because weve actually helped the kurds drive isis back. Safe passage. Safe passage to come down the mountain. I think this is what they need to be doing right now. One thing we didnt know, iraq say disaster is a disaster from top to bottom, from whats going on with isis versus the kurds versus trying to take the whole country to malik kick he was going to leave. Hes supposed to leave. Now hes saying im not leaving im going to stick around for a while in the midst of all of this other stuff. If the guy cared about iraq, he would leave and let us figure out how to push isis back. What a disaster. Im not sure theres any saving iraq. Now, it seems like the first husband that wont leave. Its like she has already dumped him. Hes still stopping by with flowers. Theres a biggest existential conflict you asked, are we moving towards war. Eric said it before, weve always been at war and we will always be at war because these people love war. So when obama says hes surprised by isis, i think hes surprised by the means. Maybe he wasnt prepared for it. But the possibility is always there. And the idea of finding a reasonable islamist. Thats about as common as a redheaded islamist. There seems to be a real love for these kinds of insurgency among the young with sever b severed heads instead of soccer balls. Thats the scary part. Somehow it appeals. It appeals to the young, the disaffected, until you crush it. Can i follow up . Yeah. Probably a lot appeals to them because theyve been fighting for 3,000 years. Yeah. Thats all they know. Its what they know how to do, this is like the most extreme form, but, wow, they love that stuff. Theyre fighting retirement every step of the way. Is there any way to fix that . Secondly, i think the decision of the United States to use selective bombing against isis is exactly the right thing to do. Arming the kurds is a little late but its there. The kurds have taken back two towns now as a result of that. Youre right. This is beginning to remind me of the balkans where we decided to fight that battle from the air and it was successful. I think if we continue to not put soldiers on the ground, rather use our hightech knowledge, isis is not that big. It can be dealt with. Theyre brutal, theres no question about it. The real question eric raises, for what end . Right now, maliki our favorite guy for that job years ago has turned out to be a pariah. He doesnt want to leave. He calls the other guy doing a coup. Hes the one doing a coup. The United States is strong. Lets also keep in mind, hes close to the iranians and ive always had questions about this guy. Enmomeaning his loyalties . Sure. My concern is this winds up with boots on the ground. If what were doing isnt successful and you have cries from john mccain and otherwise does this wind up with the situation where we once again end up with boots on the ground with no end game or strategy where we have american troops where we dont know what were doing and whether or not we can mend the situation. Do you worry about that bob . Thats one of the cases we entered into iraq. We never had an idea where we were going particularly. And we were in a situation, in a country, that had been drawn up by the british after the first world war. It had thrown in three different distinct religious minorities, sunni, shiites and kurds. And its not surprising this happen. What happened is, theres a strong man who took over, Saddam Hussein and he kept it together by brute force. There are some rumors now that the military is beginning to turn against maliki. Some for and against. I want to talk a little bit about the situation with the kurds. Finally they have been able to get some of the weaponry they have been desperately asking for for months the cia and the United States saying theyre going to help them. How do we expect them to do it with bows and arrows and slingshots . Because compared to the u. S. Weaponry that isis had in its use, there was no end in sight. With 500 women and children buried alive. These are savage. Keep in mind, we asked maliki to transfer the weapons to the kurds weeks ago and he refused to do it. Were expecting the president to make a statement from Marthas Vineyard where the white house said hes been getting regular updates. On the crisis in iraq that as another political crisis unfolds in the south in baghdad. Heres the situation today, the iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki is refusing to step down despite urging by the United States. In fact, Nuri Al Maliki took to Iraq Television to demand that he get another term. In the words of a senior iraqi official in the New York Times paper, al maliki has, quote, gone out of his mind and lives on a different planet. The iraqi planet snubbed al maliki by not nominating another term. The signal is weak but heres the president. For the past few days, American Forces have successfully conducted targeted air strikes to prevent terrorist forces from advancing on the city of erbil and to protect american civilians there. British forces on the ground continue to defend their city. And we stepped up military vice and assistance to iraqi and Kurdish Forces as they wait to fight. And at the same time, we provided humanitarian assistance for men, children and women stranded on mount sinjar and employed a usaid Disaster Team to help. Some have begun to escape their perch on that mountain and were working with International Partners to develop options to bring them to safety. I want to thank in particular the united kingdom, france, and other countries working with us to provide much needed assistance to the iraqi people. And meanwhile, our aircraft remains in position to fight any terrorist forces around the mountain to harm these families. This advances the military objectives weve outlined in iraq. Protecting american citizens. Providing advice and assistance to iraqi forces as they battle these terrorists. And joining with International Partners to provide humanitarian aid. But as i said when i authorized these operations, there is no American Military solution to the crisis in iraq. The only lasting hope is for iraqi to come together and former a conclusive government, one that represents the legitimate difference of all iraqis and one to unify against the fight. Iraq to be a promising step forward in this critical effort. Last month, the iraqi people named a new president. Today, president massoum named a new Prime Minister. Dr. Heydar allahbadby. Vice President Biden and i called dr. Al battie and urged him to form a new government for all iraqis and one that represents all iraqis. I pledged our support as well as to president massoum and speaker gentlem jaburi as this Work Together in the days ahead. This iraqi leadership has say difficult task. It has to regain the confidence of its citizens by governing conclusively and by taking steps to demonstrate its resolve. The United States stands ready to support a government that addresses the needs and grievances of all iraqi people. Were also ready to work with other countries in the region to deal with the humanitarian crisis and countertrim challenge in iraq. Mobilizing their support will be easier once this new government is in place. These have been difficult days in iraq. A country that has faced so many challenges in history. And im sure there will be difficult days ahead but the United States will remain ville vigilant against the threat posed against our people by isis we stand ready against these terrorist forces. Without question, that effort will be advanced. If iraqis continue to build on todays progress and come together and support a new and conclusive government. Thank you, everybody. Not only the president of the United States who didnt even use his name but the president of iraq who says youre gone. Nuri al maliki has said, i will not step down. He has called this a slight on the iraqi constitution. He went to the microphones and smoke to a National Audience at a very late hour and said hes going nowhere and he will work to fix this problem. So they have the fighting in the north. Receipticious minorities on tops of mountains, starving to death and thirsty to the point where theyre dying by the hundreds. And a political situation in baghdad which doesnt allow the Central Government to help out with the problems unless and until Nuri Al Maliki is gone, those steps have been taken to get rid of Nuri Al Maliki, Nuri Al Maliki says no way. Theres a standoff in baghdad and a humanitarian crisis north of iraq. The days ahead will no doubt be critical. He was the favorite going in, he stayed there. All he did is causing havoc ever since by not having representations of the shiites and kurds or the sunnis and the kurds particularly. I think its time for us to put even more pressure on it. In terms of allies, i think he was talking about humanitarian aid. On saturday morning, he said all of this stuff.
