>> well, he's recovering this evening after a heart transplant in a northern virginia facility, and it's interesting, harris, because you consider the medical institutions in the washington, d.c. area, and georgetown, george washington, he had it in fairfax, in northern virginia. what i've learned that this is actually the facility that's done the most transplants in the washington, d.c. area. they did their first heart transplant in 1986. so by all indications the former vice president was in very good hands as he received a heart transplant. but for those of us who covered him over the years, his heart issues have been an ongoing concern. he had his first heart attack at age 37 back in 1978. and during the years of the bush administration, he went through a variety of procedures, got a pacemaker in 2001, and had a number of procedures throughout that basically maintains close tabs on his heart situation while he was serving as vice president of the united states. two years ago he had an additional procedure done to help sustain his heart, but at that point it became pretty clear that either he needed a heart transplant or at some point his heart would give out. so what we've learned from his office is that he was on the transplant list for 20 months. got the transplant today. while the family does not know who gave the heart, they will remain eternally grateful for essentially giving the former vice president new life. harris? >> mike emanuel tonight reporting on the breaking news as it's been developing all evening on the medical condition now, heart transplant surgery for former vice president dick cheney. mike, thank you very much. >> thank you. >> we want to go back now live to wisconsin where rick santorum is now thanking supporters and voters after a win tonight as projected by fox news in louisiana. let's watch. >> all the people up here who have -- who are gathered with us tonight here in green bay, wisconsin, just let me thank you for making a very clear and crisp statement. that is that you don't believe the pundits who said this race is over. you didn't get the memo that the -- that the -- [cheers and applause] we're still here. we're still fighting. we still believe as this race really showed just a couple weeks ago this race was in just a couple of points, within the margin of error. we went down and tacked about being the strong and true conservative in this race. we talked about how we had a candidate that didn't have their public policy positions sketched on an etch-a-sketch, but sketched on our hearts because i'm not running as a conservative candidate for president. i am the conservative candidate for president. [cheers and applause] we have just accomplished something in the modern conservative era that had only been accomplished -- well, once before. it happened back in 1976 when ronald reagan running against the establishment, the establishment that said he was too conservative, he couldn't win, they were telling him to get out of the race, he was only hurting the party, and he continued to run because this is something more than the party. it's about doing what's right for america, standing up for the principles that will heal this country, that will bring us back together, that will make this country stronger and greater and more free. ronald reagan fought that battle in 1976, he did something that had not been done since. >> we're watching and listening in as rick santorum celebrates and thanks voters and supporters after a projected win of the gop presidential primary in louisiana. he's in bellevue, wisconsin, tonight getting ready for the contests coming up this week. for more perspective on this, good timing now we have campaign karl cameron back with us. karl, your thoughts on how things have shaped up tonight? >> well, it was pretty widely expected that santorum would win. what polling there had been in louisiana prior to the race suggested he had a big lead. mitt romney did not outspend rick santorum in louisiana the way he has in many other states. dollar for dollar, the super pacs that support both of them spent about the same. the romney campaign didn't spend a lot. this is a state that had a very, very significant evangelical christian vote, and voters that called them conservative overwhelming went for santorum, larger numbers than in a state like illinois where romney won just last week. it's a boost for santorum. he does get the majority of the delegates tonight. he will be able to go on, as you saw there in wisconsin, that's where he's looking for the next real strong standoff and face-off with mitt romney. it's interesting to hear mr. santorum make reference to mr. reagan's 1976 run against gerald ford. at that time it was determined that ronald reagan couldn't win the nomination and he stayed in the race. santorum making the same argument that he'll remain on the campaign trail potentially until the convention because he believes that romney won't be able to get the 1144 delegates to win the majority and get the nomination, that he would get more than santorum and gingrich and ron paul perhaps, but not the majority. that's a clear indication that santorum will continue his quest in the campaign. tonight's victory gives him more wind in his sails, can compete aggressively and perhaps pull off a win in wisconsin, but that's on the same day that maryland and the district of columbia has their kansas conte. romney still has a very, very big advantage. more than double the delegates that rick santorum has. romney's won 21 states and territories. mr. santorum now 11. so it really is a 2-1 gap. it's large. santorum insists he's going to stay in. some of the romney folks have made the anything else that the only reason rick santorum is continuing is not to win the nomination, but ultimately to position himself for a candidacy in 2016, and santorum when asked about that this week didn't deny it. he again made reference to the ronald reagan experience of 1976 who of course didn't win then, but did come back and win twice in the 1980s. harris? >> karl, one thing that could trip up rick santorum has to do the fact that there's still other people in this race. newt gingrich and ron paul. and while they didn't get a huge percentage in louisiana, if you add them up, if you start splitting the vote going down the road, that could be problematic. what's their status at this point? >> well, ron paul didn't really make a significant play here in louisiana. had campaign events today of consequence. he's been cherry picking caucuses and delegates along the way. early in the part of the primary process, when he would have a compare headquarters on the night of an election, he didn't say he was looking forward to becoming president or welcome the campaign, but talked about advancing the case of liberty. in the case of ron paul, it's understood that he's brought new vigor to the republican party as his son rand paul says as the intellectual father of the tea party movement. in the case of newt gingrich, gingrich himself just yesterday in louisiana said he will not get the 1144 delegates necessary to clinch the nomination. he went on to say neither will santorum, nor ron paul, and ultimately it's a battle to deny the nomination from mitt romney to have an open convention. used to be described as a brokered convention where the proverbial smoke-filled back room could arrive on who the nominee will be. the idea that's going to happen not advanced much with tonight's win for santorum. >> karl cameron, thank you very much for all your perspective and great reporting tonight. >> covering the bush white house, the status of vice president cheney's heart over the eight years was something that reporters were keenly aware of. i remember in 2001, he had a pacemaker installed. just two years ago, after leaving the white house, he had a further assistive device established to help his heart run, but it was clear that either he needed a heart transplant at some point or eventually his heart would give out and he would pass away. vice president cheney had talked several times in interviews with -- was asked if he would go for a heart transplant, and said he hadn't made up his mind, but waited 20 months for this heart. the good news from his office is that he's recovering after a successful heart transplant today. the office says that the family does not know the identity of the person who donated a heart, but obviously a key component in all of this is that somebody was a heart donor and was successfully transferred to vice president cheney's body and presumably he's on the road to recovery. >> what do we know about the prognosis for recovery at this point?
