Parlay hearing live in seattle. It lasted about 30 minutes. We are waiting for the judges ruling. There were no surprises in the arguments. The attorney argued that amazon was unjustified in taking them down on sunday nights, and the action violated their agreement. Amazon shot back and said parlor violated the terms of the agreement by not doing a better job of policing the content, said it glorified and promoted violence. Amazon said it was forced into this unprecedented emergency action. It says its lawyers that the danger of inciting violence through language cannot be protected on social media. Parlors lawyer said they had nothing to do with the right. Amazon pointed out that some of the participants are facing federal charges of inciting violence based on their post on parler. Parler has been growing rapidly. It claims 15 million users. The companys ceo says it is tobeing taken off of the amazons service is a death sentence. He says this is an issue of free speech. This is really a big attack on small business, on up and coming startups, and on a free speech online. If you are not in the club, he dont get access to the internet. Reporter in a court filing, amazon wrote compelling language that incites violence could be unprecedented. Parler has no likelihood of prevailing. Parler said that policing the internet is a problem with anybody doing business online. They pointed out that the hashtag hangmikepence was trending on twitter. Dana the twitter co is defending their position banning President Trump. Reporter jack dorsey admits that there are consequences to his actions by banning President Trump, saying it was not a decision to celebrate, acknowledging that banning an account has significant ramifications. I feel a ban is a failure of hours to ultimately promote healthy conversation, a time for us to reflect on our operations and the environment around us. That was part of a 13 tweet thread last night, concluding it was still the right decision to ban President Trump for social safety. Jack dorsey also added he was going to build a twitter alternative that was decentralized and open to everybody. We have a note to mike and social media giant, snapchat, banning President Trump 3,250,000,000 or so visit snapchat every day. Twitter has a slightly less, but both are behind facebook, with 2 billion daily users. Wall street has sold down twitter and facebook shares, both lost a combined 60 billion in market value. Investors are concerned that banning the u. S. President sets dangerous precedents, which might open the door to future controversy and less engagement, ultimately meeting they will make less money in the future. Dana . Dana susan, i appreciate how you can articulate the difference between president and precedent to. [laughter] i need to work on it. My next guest is one of the stars of the hit Netflix Documentary the social dilemma. He is a former google consultant who says banning President Trump could be the beginning of the end for these companies. Joining me now is joe fasano. I enjoy the documentary. Talk about how we are in the situation today. Why do you think it is the beginning of the end . Joe thank you for having me. I spoke with brian flood about this a little bit. I think that the big thing here is we are reaching the end of what would be perfection of control with social media. They have all of these laws for their platforms, terms of service. They did make stance to uphold them. They havent been upholding them for so long. This is a virtue signal that they now feel accountable. If they are accountable for their contents, i think its going to lead into a bigger discussion about section 2 30, their rights as to whether they are publishers. Lets just be fair. These content platforms, they are not built to be a butchers. Thats why they fought so hard for the last 45 years to not be labeled publishers. As we head down this road, as you just mentioned with investors, we are going to hit this point to where theres going to be larger conversations these companies dont want to have. Its going to beat the beginning of the end, unless they make serious decisions and change their business model. Dana and take a listen to tim cook. He was on cbs yesterday saying this. Parler has issues with moderation. There are incitement to violence examples on there. They need to step it up on moderation. Our hope is that they do that and get back on. We have terms of service for our app store. Some of those terms of service, he is in violation of. All we are asking is he make the terms of service. Dana thinking about some of these big service, like an apple or a google, or even amazon. Instead of deplatforming these sites, alternatives, what about helping them . Do you think that would be in their interest to say to parler here are 5 things you need to do, we will help, you need them done in 48 hours, so it is not a shutdown of an alternative . That does look anticompetitive. Joe absolutely. Apple is under antitrust investigation for control of their app store. Thats not a question. Thats a problem we are debating in real time. I agree. Ive never used parler. Its not my source of information, but i agree. These companies, especially from the stance of the antitrust investigation, the freespeech investigations are sure to come, i think they would be better off to take a stance where lets work together, figure out how we make this situation better. They made a decision they felt they needed to make. It is within the bounds of their terms of service. That might not have a good effect for them. They are better off to work cooperatively to improve the situation. Thats what this moment in time is about. We are trying to figure out how we reunite the country. A part of this has to come with these companies cooperating, working to make the situation work. Dana how likely is it that a competitive product to twitter or facebook could be created and succeed at scale . Joe in terms of can it be created, yes. Weve already seen that. Snapchat was quite the competitor 45 years ago when it first took off. Tiktok has called competition. Its not easy by any means. Orchid innovation is never easy. Is it possible . Absolutely. The fact that these companies are going to go through heavy litigation, antitrust, freedom of speech, whatever else we are going to see a net of the litigation cast over these companies, which will slow them down. If there are amendments to section 230, a reclassification of publisher status, that could harm them up fundamentally. They are not built for that. All of this is going to slow them down enough that we are going to see free market innovation circumvent them, the same way myspace dana there have been a lot of companies that have decided to move out of Silicon Valley. There might be taxes, could be because they are looking to diversify their workplace i mean a diversity of thought, in addition to other diversity do you think that as some of these companies decide to leave Silicon Valley that it might be eyeopening to them about how there are people that might disagree with them, that they have a right to have access to the site as long as they have agreed to the terms of service . Joe that is why i left. Im from nebraska. Dana [laughs] joe i felt the workforce was not representative of our nation. Im back home, working in a Rural America to help skilled laborers for what i believe will be a revolution in the tech force in the coming decade. I believe these companies exit Silicon Valley because of the high prices, whatever it is. I believe they will get exposed to it and see change. Dana i didnt know you are from nebraska, but now i know why i was drawn to you in the documentary. Midwestern sensibilitys. Thank you so much, joe. Joe toscano. Com promo dana the house voted to impeach President Trump for a second time, but he is out of office in a few days. What does this all mean . Lets bring in a karl rove Andy Mccarthy. The headline in the wall street journal editorial is the 7 a day impeachment. In their opinion, the best result is to get the house to vote with no senate trial. Karl that will be up to constitutional scholars and legal experts, like andy, to decide. It doesnt seem strange. The earliest this vote can be taken up by the senate is on the 19th of the month. The senate by unanimous consent agreed it was going to recess until that day. If they attempted to come back earlier, all it would take is one the senator objecting, and they would not meet. You take it up on the 19th. They cannot hold the trial and resolve it before the 20th, when on the 20th, the president is out of office. I understand why the feelings are high about this. I disagree with the president s handling of last week. He clearly incited that crowd to go to the capital. It got out of control. People died. It took him 27 hours to condemn the violence. Even then, it wasnt a particularly strong denunciation. Understand why temples are why tempers are high. It may keep him from running from office again, but that is a political, not governmental judgment. Dana i noticed that this former judge, he has weighed in. He thinks that it is not possible, that it is unconstitutional to try a former president once they are no longer in office. Do you have an opinion formed on that yet . Andy ive always been in the camp that you can have such a trial, but its one of these things that is more in the nature of a Law School Exam question than something you would expect to encounter. The framers intentionally made impeachment hard. Thats what the to slash three supermajority thats what the 2 3 supermajority is in place for, so congress doesnt have control over the president. If you are trying to do something that is uphill like this, you need your jurors reasons to want to convict. If you gratuitously give them rationales for acquitting, you are stacking the deck against yourself. You have this profound constitutional question about whether you can do this postpresidency. They have big proof problems with respect to incitement and insurrection. There is a sense that this is political more than anything else. I dont know. Dana speaking of politics, this is a week where a lot of people are going to say what does the future look like . Wasnt a nikki haley. She was interviewed last night by her colleague. I dont think republicans need to be deprogrammed. What i do think the Republican Party needs to do is decide what we want to be when we grow up. We dont want to go back to the Republican Party before trump, because he added people to the fold. He brought in a part of america that had not been heard, seen, and understood. Dana karl, i noticed the spokesman for House Minority leader, kevin mccarthy, has said to fox news he does not support the potential g. O. P. Conference chair, who decided she would vote for impeachment yesterday. People come to you and say what now for the Republican Party. Do you know yet . Karl Ambassador Haley is right, you cant go back. Its changing. Both Political Parties are in disarray. She is right, the Republican Party needs to figure out what it wants to be. I will make two points. The movement of bluecollar, middleclass americans out of the Democratic Party did not start with trump. He was the beneficiary of 20 years of moments of people who felt that the coastal elites, people who lived in these places, who were in academia and government, were disrespecting them. Thats been going on for 20 years. There was an interesting Political Science paper written by two left of center academics, looking at this part from the perspective of what do democrats need to do so they dont leave. Dont pass rules in which you cant save mother, father, sister, brother, sister, aunt, he, she on the floor. Dana i want to give andy the last word here, karl. You have watched the Republican Party evolve over time. Democrats have decided to become reagan voters. Your idea for Going Forward . Andy i am not a populist, dana, so i dont im up more about building it back on conservative principles, then the source of ideas that and karl is alluding to. If it is between cheney conservativism and trump populism, regardless of how it may look to people right now, the other way of thinking is better to build on. It stands for something that is identifiable. Dana theres a lot of discussion on what is to come. Thank you both. Appreciate it. Next, aoc says Congress Might have to rain in the media. Reacting to that, next. Ok everyone, our mission is to provide complete, balanced nutrition for strength and energy. Whoohoo great tasting ensure with 9 grams of protein, 27 vitamins and minerals, and nutrients to support immune health. We made usaa insurance for veterans like martin. When a hailstorm hit, he needed his insurance to get it done right, right away. Usaa. What youre made of, were made for. Usaa dana president elect biden wants to hit the ground running with a stimulus package revolving around disturbing vaccine. It is right around 1 trillion in cost. We have fox team coverage. Then, we have peter doocy as well. Sorry pure six reporter bidens plan, according some stomach to some estimates, could cost as much as 320 billion more. Biden wants to bring back the individual mandate, the mandate that punches people who opt out of coverage, charging over 600 for adults who opt out. He wants to let Illegal Immigrants be able to enroll in the exchange. They will get slapped with the same individual mandate fine. If they opt out of coverage, the mandate is levied through taxes. If you are filing taxes, you wont be charged. This policy expert tells me that bidens plan to let people here illegally benefit from the exchange could have an impact on on your premiums as well. If a lot of people enroll with preexisting conditions, that could drive up the price for everyone else. At the moment, biden is not letting stomach planning on letting the government subsidized care for Illegal Immigrants, meaning they would have to shell out the full cost of themselves. That is making Immigration Reform advocates suspicious, who say it normalizes illegal immigration, telling me it seems likely that the proposal is the first step and a larger effort to secure taxpayerses subsidized paying by giving people advanced premium tax credits, or medicaid. The estimated cost to extending subsidized government coverage to Illegal Immigrants through the aca would be as much as 10 billion every year. As of now, that is not part of bidens plan. Dana thank you. I dont think you will mind, we had ladies go first there. Now, it is your turn. Reporter [laughs] take two. Sources telling us that the president elect wants to leave it up to the senate to try to figure out the pathway forward, and do what biden wants, which is passing covid19 relief plans quickly, and do what the senate wants, what democrats in the senate want to, is convict trump. While it is a procedural question, we have to see if we can do them simultaneously, one day doing a senate trial, the next day doing covid release, making sure that President Biden has his cabinet in place right away. We stand ready to do both at the same time. It is a procedural question. Reporter bidens covid plan is going to cost 1. 5 trillion according to reuters. Out of that pace for 1400 checks, in addition to the 600 checks this month. The total is 2,000 when a combined, but that is not exactly what biden promised last week. If you send john and the reverend to washington, those 2,000 checks will go out the door, restoring hope and decency and honor for so many people who are struggling right now. Report to make the checks might not have 2,000 in them all at once, even though biden got what he wanted. We havent laid eyes on the president elect since he got the second dose of the pfizer covid19 vaccine on monday. We expect him to talk about his covid plan in rare prime time remarks. Dana peter, i want to congratulate you. I think its going to be amazing to see you in the White House Briefing room. I have to say, im a little worried for whoever is going to sit behind you, because how are they going to see whats going on . Reporter [laughs] that is something that i had not thought about, but that sounds like [laughter] i dont think im going to have a problem making eye contact with whoever is at the podium. Dana you wont, but if you are 5 feet tall, this is one of the things you think about. Congratulations, peter, and thank you. Reporter thank you very much. Dana lets bring in our guests. We love peter doocy. Hes done a great job. Marie, we have some thinking to do here. The president elect going to give remarks tonight. A strange time to give remarks in the middle of, 7 00 p. M. Its a new wood administration, we will have a new way of doing things. President biden tweeted open to like the process to peach President Trump continues to the senate, and i hope they will do their responsibilities while also working on urgent business. Maria, you have done press for a long time. Its going to be hard to get coverage on anything if peach impeachment is going on at the same time. What does this do to the biden rollout . Marie i think the one issue that could compete with impeachment is covid relief. We have seen in so many parts of this country covid is still ravaging. People are desperate for more help. Economic numbers are not good. I think covid relief cannot compete with that. Its about not only press coverage. The senate has a constitutional duty. We will see two Democratic Senators sworn in from georgia, tipping the senate. As we heard in an earlier clip, they have to proceed to really figure out how they are going to do a bunch of important things at the same time. The biden team understands that they have to proactively get their message out there. Thats why hes speaking tonight at 7 00 p. M. They cannot just rely on these videos coming out of the senate. They need to say to the american people, all of that is important. Heres what we are going to dana collin reed, how do you see it . It is tough. President trump has blocked out the sun for a lot of other media coverage. Do you think that changes next week . Collin the president ial inauguration will take over the news cycle, but in terms of governing, governing his test dominic tough business, especially in polarized times. I dont think democrats ever thought they were going to hold the sun is in addition to the house and the presidency. Time is a flat circle. Joe bidens coming to washington as part of an administration with total control of d. C. They are going to get stuff done quickly. Before you know it, the 2,022 midterms will be upon us. There are a bunch of Democratic Senators in purple and red states that are not going to want tough votes. They will be, in the words of president obama, part of a schlacking, that President Biden has taken steps to avoid. Dana this person has said that he thinks biden should pardon President Trump. Do you think would be unifying. Marie, what do you think . Speech of the thing that democrats and republicans can do is not take advice from jim comey. Dana all right. Collin . Collin couldnt have said it better. Dana i like your kitchen. It looks good. Thank you so much. Howie kurtz, hes coming up next. Its a new day for veteran homeowners. Com app. It seems congresswoman alexander acquires he occurs has and her progressives have a new goal , alexandria ocasiocortez and her progressives have a new goal, silence the press. There is a commission that is being discussed. Several members of congress, some of my discussions have brought up media literacy, because that is a part of what happened here. We are going to have to figure out how we rein in our media environment so that you cant just spew disinformation and misinformation. Dana lets bring in howie kurtz. One thing occurred to me, howie. 70 of people get their news from social media. You get that from all sorts of different ways. Its unclear if shes, what media shes talking about. Its never a good idea for the government to talk about reining in the media. Howie i dont like to hear any politician use that kind of language. That is not a role for government. There is the reason the press is covered by the first amendment. Its fine for a member of congress to blast the media. President trump has been known to do that now and again, but i dont want the federal commission deciding what is false. There is a lot of false information right now, especially in the wake of the insurrection and impeachment, but the way to counter that is reporting that documents the facts. Anything else would be a difficult road for the democrats to pursue. Dana isnt it interesting, howie i think its true that many leftleaning people, imagine Hillary Clinton they think they get a raw deal from the press, and conservatives think the media is biased against them. Its interesting that they also have the perspective. Howie bill clinton used to rail against the left wing a kneejerk press. Nobody likes being covered, especially when you occupy the white house and you are the focus of so much scrutiny. Lets keep our mind on alexandria ocasiocortez. There is no legislation. Shes talking about discussions. Lets also remember that passions are running high. On that same instagram video, she talked about how she thought she was going to die during the capital siege, said she had a close call. Im willing to cut her some slack. I dont think she has thought through all the implications being suggested. Dana i do think that when you talk about social media versus traditional media, its all melded together. We have seen what happened with big tech. She mentioned something about media literacy. There is something to that when it comes to not just media literacy, but Civics Education across the country. Howie im all for people learning more about being Sophisticated Media consumers, sang to a News Organization you let off the program about snapchat joining twitter and permanently banning President Trump. The Reason Congress does look into misinformation in places like twitter or facebook is because they enjoy that legal immunity that they have discussed that President Trump and others wanted to strip. There is a role for government there. When it comes to mainstream media, and they have been suggested to criticism about bias and sensationalism and spreading allegations that may not be fully verified, im all for it to criticism. I think we should criticize ourselves, but i dont see a role for government. I hope the democrats, when they are running the government, are wise enough to know that even though it stings, they dont like being criticized its natural human nature government regulation is not the answer. Dana of freedom of the press is in the first amendment, the first for a reason. Thank you, howie. Next, a shocking look at who is losing their jobs right now, and the group of people getting hit the hardest by far. Reporter last month, women who lost 156,000 jobs while men gained 16,000 jobs. This highlights the huge impact of the covid crisis is having on women in the workforce. Hundreds of thousands of jobs have been lost in industries dominated by women. Women lost all of the gains they had made in the past decade. Postrecession, they lost all the jobs they have gained in 10 years, in just one month. They lost 12 million jobs. We have 45 of those, those are gone. We are looking at close to 5 million jobs that need to come back. Reporter the leisure and hospitality sector lost 498,000 jobs in december. Women accounted for nearly 60 of these job losses, while making up 53. 1 of the Leisure Hospitality workforce. The government sector lost 45,000 jobs last month, and women accounted for 91. 1 of those job losses. Women make up 57. 5 of the government workforce. The National Womens law center says recovery from this will take months if not years. We are at a labor force that we havent seen in 30 years. We lost a generation of gains. Its not going to be a snapback thing. Its going to be a long road to recovery. Dana one study shows one in four women are considering downshifting their careers or leaving the workforce because of the challenges of covid19, including balancing work with homeschooling and child care responsibilities. A lot of tough choices to make right now. Dana here with me now is the founder and ceo of girls who code, and a former new york city deputy advocate. We loved having you before talking about covid. I know this is important to you. The problem for women and losing jobs during coronavirus is broad and deep. Absolutely. Its a National Crisis that is having huge economic consequences. What we saw with the recent jobs report, all the jobs lost were women. We have labor Market Participation at the rate of women in the 1980s. We have to act now. It is not just about jobs. Whats happening now in this country is having a huge toll on womens mental health. Women are drinking at 6 times the rate of men. Its every aspect of their life. Covid 19 is taking a toll. I think we need a Marshall Plan for moms, and needed today. Dana and tell me about the scope of the job loss. Do you think it is mainly because of the Service Sector and hospitality, that those jobs have knowingly . Or is it deeper than that . Reshma i think it is deeper than that. I think so many mothers, because of School Closures have happened, or homeschooling. We know 8 out of 10 families, that responsibility is going to women. For me, i have to log up my son at 9 00, 10 00, 11 00, 12 00. Im i raise my hands, can for opportunities . No. Many women are going on food stamps, quitting their jobs, moving in with their parents, taking on the night shift. It is causing huge economic consequence is for women. Its not just about the types of jobs that are lost. You cannot deny that School Closures and the fact that we dont have affordable day care or paid leave in this country is having huge consequences. Dana wondering about how fast these jobs could come back for women. President elect biden is going to be giving a policy speech tonight focusing on policy coros relief. Is there anything i can help these working moms . Reshma we have called it a Marshall Plan for moms. We cannot change what we cannot name. The covid19 crisis has had a disparate impact on women. We need a plan on how we are going to get back. Dana what is that plan question reshma basic income from others. We dont value what we dont pay for. This has disproportionately affected moms. I want to pass affordable day care and paid leave. I was excited to see that the stimulus plan was including tax credit for children. I also think we need to call on main street and wall street to do more. We need a plan of how are these Companies Going to rehire women, by what time, what are the incentives . Are we going to a retraining . Only going to provide opportunities for women to come back into the workforce . Dana, ive been seeing studies that Many School Districts are continuing to promote learning the fall when you make those dana thats ridiculous. Reshma thats, when you think dana in the fall . Reshma in the fall [laughter] dana thats crazy. That cant happen. We are going to have a vaccine. Heres another thing. Moms might need more choice when it comes to school. Reshma, im sorry, but we have to run. Thank you. Next, it might be the craziest story you here all day. Hi, anita. Hi, dana. Year all guilty of this. Making up a password and forgetting what it is or where we put it. Now as you said, one man literally stands to lose a fortune. Stefan thomas is a german programmer living here in california. 11 years ago, he said he received 7,000 bitcoin tokens. He wrote down the password on a piece of paper that is long gone. The season gives you ten tries before it reencrypts. Then the tokens will be gone forever. He has two tries left. Fans of bitcoin love it because it does allow your private information to be protected by servers, not people. Critics say the problem is you cant negotiate with a server.
