Going to be in your town tomorrow. Dana this comes after last night, President Trump and the Coronavirus Task force released a grim new projection saying that virus could kill as many as 240,000 americans. And that is if people follow social restrictions. The president warning the next two weeks will be brutal. We begin with dr. Tom friedman, former director of the center of Disease Control and prevention and president of resolve to save lives. Maybe give us a taste of what its like, if you put yourself in the shoes of dr. Fauci and dr. Burks, to deliver that message to the president and know that then the president is going to have to be the one responsible to deliver the message then to the american people, that we got a long way to go. We need to act with tremendous urgency, we are all in this together and its crucially important that we use this time, this precious time that we have to get ready because that number is not destiny, that number is a warning. What we have to do is everything in our power to prevent as many deaths as possible and that means not only that Everyone Needs to stay home but it also means that we need to urgently ramp up our Health Care System, our tracking of the virus, our Public Health system. Thats what other countries have done to get this under control and we can do it but we have to Work Together with an enormous sense of the word, urgency and well coordinated. Dana just to go back to Governor Cuomo for a moment, he talked about this problem being one of trying to protect our Health Care System. With all the news and people sing with the nurses and doctors and emts are going through, its sinking in. Take a listen to what Governor Cuomo said on that earlier. We have been behind from day one. This virus has been ahead of us from day one. You dont win a war that way. The next battle is on the apex. The next battle is on the top of the mountain that is where the enemy either overwhelms our Health Care System or we are able to handle the onslaught of the enemy. Dana dr. Frieden, just take a look at this chart here, the states that have a thousand or more cases. To the Governors Point this is not just a new york problem although it is a very severe problem in new york right now but across the board you see states, indiana even with 2100 cases and even alabama now. These are states with at least a thousand cases. What should states be preparing for right now . Can you hear me . Dr. Frieden . He cannot hear me, so unfortunately i will answer my own question. That was this, the governor of new york was telling states, you have to understand, this is coming her way. So you may not have a lot of problems, you may not even have a lockdown order. Dr. Frieden, were you able to fix the connection . Okay. All right. We probably will have to move on from that. Let me give you a couple other pieces of information here. You did have the Surgeon General jerome adams saying on the today show that he is begging people to stay at home because to get to go back to this issue of the state. When its like a tsunami, the big wave comes and it takes a little while to get there and thats why you have some time to get out of the way. I think thats what the officials are trying to say today. There are 190,000 cases in the United States. Dr. Frieden, they are telling me you are available now . Yes. Dana okay, great. Im obviously not the expert and you are. Maybe talk a little bit about what these hospitals and other states should be preparing for now and why its important that even if you dont have a lot of cases in your state right now, to respect the social distancing so that you can protect your health care. Because if we lose the Health Care Systems capability to take care of us, we will all be in a lot of trouble. There is no city anywhere in the country or anywhere in the world that can withstand the number of cases of covid19 that will occur if we do not physically distanced urgently. And that there is a delay. If you turn off the top of the spread of infections today it will be a week or two before people get sick because they were exposed, it takes five or six days on average, up to two weeks to get sick. Then another week before they are hospitalized or severely ill. Thats why we know we will continue to see a large number of cases even after the physical distancing starts. What we do know is it will get better but we have to use this precious time, every single second that we have two work to prepare. That means increase safety in our Health Care Systems. So if you are Health Care Workers get infected. That means that people with mild illness need a way to be cared for quickly without infecting others. Let me in scaling up not just a number of ventilators but who will operate them. Whats equipment for them, how can we save peoples lives and how do we get our Public Health departments ready to do the kind of testing, contact creating, isolation and quarantine thats crucial. Other countries have gotten this right and theres no reason that we cant, also. What it means is every, using every second, its not a time to wait, its a time to work. Dana let me ask you about the idea of the ventilators and people needing to use them. Are there those in health care that could learn this pretty quickly and how could we get that done . Nurses, emergency medical technicians, doctors and others can be trained. A lot of the ventilators are complex to use but its a system. Its about the equipment, the section and the tubing and the people to operate it and it do that safely so we dont lose more Health Care Workers. Health care workers are a most Precious Resource and they are the front line in this war. This world war against coronavirus. We have to make sure they have the protection they need to come not just protective equipment but also the systems so that patients with illness are not exposing them. Theres a way to structure our care that reduce the risk of patients in every Health Care Facility in every nursing home and every longterm care Facility Needs to make that happen. This is coming and its coming to your community. Its time to do what you can now. Just think about this, one thought. If new york city had locked down two days later, that would have doubled the number of cases. This comes, as the governor said, like a bullet train, not a freight train. That means we need to work so quickly and learn from other countries, singapore, china and hong kong. Dana can i ask you about, i mean, learning from china, what could we learn . We cant even trust the information that they have and dr. Burks said that last night, that a lot of the models they were working with say it might be more mild of a problem then it has turned out to be because china didnt give us the right information. What did you see there that they did well that we should replicate . We are learning more about this virus all the time and is one expert said we need to be humble about it because we are learning more all the time. Let me give you one number. 700,000. Thats the number of contacts that china has created and i do believe that number. Thats a management number they use. They did that by having in one city, the city of wuhan where this started, they had 1800 teams of five people tracing contacts. 700 people tracked for 14 days each and when they got sick immediately isolated. Thats how theyve been able to tempt us down. They are now testing massively and have identified 100 or 200 cases per day of people coming into china from other places and thats the best of what the future can look like for us. Where we are aggressively testing and isolating a Contact Tracing so we can get back to a new normal, we have to so be careful but we dont have explosive spread. It is possible to do that and thats what singapore, china, taiwan and south korea have shown us. We have to work much faster and much more coordinated. Dana dr. Tom frieden, we appreciate your time, thank you. Meanwhile, the u. S. Military dealing with the coronavirus far from the american mainland. The captain of the Aircraft CarrierTheodore Roosevelt is docked in guam and hes now sounding the alarm after hundreds of sailors on board tested positive. National security correspondent Jennifer Griffin is at the pentagon with more. Jennifer, is there an update on the call from the captain there to be rescued . Dana, we just came out of a briefing with the chief of Naval Operations and active secretary, thomas mobley. We were given an update, the original letter from the captain, the plea for help to get those 5,000 sailors off of the ship after their number of covid19 cases had spiked. It seems that call came on sunday and that the navy had been working very quickly to move some of those sailors off the ship. We are told that 1,000 are off the ship and another 1200 should be off the ship in short order there. Looking for hotels in guam in order to play some of those sailors. Theyve increased the testing aboard the ship but this was a highly unusual plea for help from the captain of the uss Teddy Roosevelt after nearly 100 sailors on board had tested positive for or were suspected of having covid19. That number had been doubling every few days. He has 5,000 sailors on board and they had been forced into the port in guam a few days early. The letter to top navy brass was leaked to the San Francisco chronicle but the Navy Officials we just heard from said there may have been a lag between that leak and when they were starting to address the captains concerns. The captain wants to offload the majority of the crew immediately to disinfect the ship, adding the spread of the disease is ongoing and accelerating. We are not at war, sailors do not need to die. If we dont act now we are failing to take care of our most trusted asset, the sailors. Some are needed to watch over the ships two reactors and dozens of fighter ships. Obviously we have huge implications for the navy. That is not it has a lot of fuel on board, and we cant just take everybody off. In in some ways it is like a cruise ship in terms of how fast spreading on board and how difficult it is to socially isolated. The navy is scrabbling to find hotel rooms in guam and they need the equivalent of five large new york hotels to house everyone on board. A number of positive covid19 cases came on board with carrying out exercises just ten days ago and that number is rising and doubling every few days as we mentioned. On march 5th, the carrier stopped in guam for a five day port call. They cant say for certain whether patient zero was in vietnam and was part of that port visit. At the time w. H. O. Said vietnam was a low risk. The carrier can only text, contest 200 People Per Day meaning it would take 25 days for all the sailors to be tested but the Navy Officials that we just spoke to here at the pentagon said they are increasing the testing to 500 tests per day and again they are looking for more housing to try to relieve some of the pressure on board the roosevelt. Dana i thank you will. Doctors, nurses and hospital staff are risking their lives to try to save others. Up next we will speak to a one who knows all too well what it takes on the front line of this fight. President trump i watch the doctors and the nurses walking into that hospital this morning. Deborah birx praising medical workers were doing their jobs heroically despite the danger. Joining us now is benny cortez, its good to have you here with us. I wanted to read to you from a nurse that is describing scary conditions, this is marion county, afraid to give her name for understandable reasons says that if expectations continue to increase as far as patient demand and corners continue to be cut, i do not know if i can continue to risk my health and those of my family for a company who thinks this is okay. The staff have no been informed about the ppe numbers are that we only get one mask per day. Ms. Cortez, what do you think is the biggest problem for nurses right now . Is that this concern about not having enough protective gear . Yeah. First of all thank you for having me. The main problem is lack of personal protective equipment. I understand where my colleague, the nurse who you were mentioning, i understand where shes coming from. Its because the hospital industry and our management people continue to ration masks, and gowns, and now they are saying we need to conserve on glove. Gloves. We are nurses, we are the frontline workers. Its easy for them to bark out the orders when they are in their offices or in their homes. You know, giving the orders. But we are there to take care of patients. We need to have all the proper gear in order for us to safely take care of our patients and also to take care of ourselves because we still go home to our families and we intermingle with the community and that is what is causing a lot of anxiety amongst the nurses. We are not afraid to take care of the patients who have covid19 but we need to have the proper gear in order to do our job safely. Dana so who would best be able to help you to get that, how could wes help solve that problem for nurses across the country, not just nurses but everybody. Is there a bottleneck that you know of that could be broken . First of all it needs to start locally. Like hospitals or Health Care Institutions we work. They need to stop hoarding the proper protective equipment and the mask in the gloves. Then, they need to start searching where they could get more of the safety gear. The president had said there are stockpiles, lots of the stockpile but where are they . He needs to release it. He had put some state and federal agencies to take care of it like fema and whatever other agency had mentioned. And other agencies and other Health Care Institutions because in order for us to continue taking care of patients we need to have the proper gear. We hear you. We want the nurses to be taken care of and i think they are trying their best. Hopefully it will get better soon because we know than nurses are concerned and we need you to be well in order to take care of all of us. Thanks for your time today. Molly line is alive. She is just outside of boston. Thats happening across the country. They shouldnt be afraid to ask for it. Of those are remarkable. Not only in many states around the country but unemployment claims have skyrocketed and the demand is up at food banks all over the place. People who have lost their jobs and have been laid off are seeking Food Security for their family and its the kind of help they have may never have sought before. This is something we are seeing from coasttocoast. At many of our sites we are seeing 50 100 increase in the number of people coming. People can call if they need Food Assistance and usually the calls are around 200 calls per day. Now we are getting over a thousand calls per day. It is an unprecedented and farmers markets have been replaced by social distancing measures. The Greater Boston food bank in massachusetts has seen a 50 increase in demand with a larger day of distribution in the organizations history one friday last month. Volunteers, the heart of that organization have also been limited for safety and social at distancing. We dont believe this is just a two week one and done, we are already seeing that these levels are going to require us to be present and to raise money and continue to have volunteers on the front lines and keep our team healthy. They dont expect the need to end anytime soon so if you are home and cant leave your home, i could leave your home, many of these food banks across the country are welcoming those monetary donations right now. Feedingamerica. Org is a great resource or a great website to go to if you are looking for your local food bank. Dana yes, we have two. All right. If you cant afford to buy food, paying your rent could be a big problem but due to coronavirus many people dont have the cash. Deirdre bolton is not a looking at some options and if thats for you. The one thing is, you are not alone. I think thats the one message that we are hearing from Financial Experts at also from various businesses, banks included. But we heard from chris hogan who is actually a financial expert and author of numerous books. Heres what he told us. The worst thing you can do is avoid your creditors and wait on them to call you or make a promise to pay that you cant keep. And you want to be upfront and honest be honest about what you can and cant do. Chris told us to write the script ahead of time. If you feel like you cant pay your bills, make a list, write down dates of what you can pay and have that card ready for when you call. We want to show you, there are at least 35 states from the state level that are barring eviction during this outbreak. Seven states have a partial ban and then there are seven states to where new act will make no action has been taken. When people dont pay their rent, you cannot kick them out. There are also companies that are trying to do their best in these companies, he would have to reach out to on a casebycase basis and explain whats going on. But im going to read off this list. Bank of america, capital one, chase, pnc and td bank. These are just a few that if you owe them money or have loans with them and you call them they have openly said we will work something out with you but you need to call us. We are not reaching out to you. You need to call us. Other Financial Institutions have taken a separate tactic, and trying to support citizens as well during this crisis. Dana a Florida GovernorFlorida Governor ron desantis said he did speak to President Trump this morning about two cruise ship cited for south florida without permission. They are seeking to dock, and more than 2,000 people are on board. More than 100 of the passengers or the people on the ship are sick and the president says he wants to do whats right but the governor says he wants to save the states valuable Health Care Resources for floridians. Of course my concern is that we have worked so hard to have adequate hospital space that we wouldnt want those valuable beds to be taken. Dana he says hes willing to taken floridians from the ship but most of the passengers are foreigners. Ed and faye hoover are passengers on the rotterdam cruise ship and they joined me now. You are from tallahassee. Tell me a little bit, what has it been like theyre on the ship for you . Weve been quarantined the last 12 days. We havent been sick so i know there were a lot of people sick before we left. We havent had any problems. Cant say enough about how great theyve been to all of us, on both ships. The crews were just fantastic and the captains have been upfront with us from the start. I just cant understand why the governor wont let us off. President is pressing for a decision and quickly. You are floridians so the governor is saying that he would accept you. What about other people on the ship . Im assuming if you are quarantined, you wouldnt have communication with others on the ship . Thats true. Nobody has access to anybody. We get three meals delivered and we get all of the beverages delivered. We just dont see anybody, which is okay. We understand thats what you have to do. The majority of the people on these ships are healthy people. Yes, there are foreigners, but we are all members of humanity. And you have to do the right thing. Dana what do you think the right thing is, ed . You have to get people home. If the governor would think about it he probably has a 1200 or 1400 room hotel sitting out here that once its sanitized he could move the people onto the ship and im sure that somebody has thought about that. I mean, its incumbent upon them to do the right thing. We are all americans and americans do not hide. They go after and do the right thing all the time. You cant hide from responsibility. You just have to step up and do what you need to do. I spent 20 years in the military and i know that there is a methodology to get this done. If the governor is having a problem im sure one of my military brothers can help him with it. Dana ed and fay hoover, i look forward to talking to you again in the future. I wish you well. I believe, i hope that this will be over for you and everybody soon thats on that ship. Stay safe, thank you. Thank you very much. Dana byebye. New yorks police and Fire Departments are the largest in america and now they are facing Major Staffing shortages. Hundreds of First Responders are already diagnosed and thousands more are out sick. Dana, you know despite the high risk of becoming infected with covid19, new york citys emts, paramedics, firefighters and Police Officers are responding to a Record Number of emergency calls. Unfortunately covid19 has taken its toll and the number is staggering. Five members of the an nypd have died and more individuals have been diagnosed. Today though Governor Andrew Cuomo said they have a contingency plan. If we believe we dont have the minimum personnel to Police New York city, then we could go to the state police. Covid19 has hit fdny hard. 282 numbers have tested positi positive, and the good news is that help has arrived. Fema has sent 250 ambulances and they have come from atlanta, greenville, north carolina, and 500 emts and paramedics have also arrived. We are told emts and paramedics are working 17 hour shifts and they are afraid to go home because i dont want to infect their family. They are physically and emotionally drained. Often times we know that we will never see them again alive and these people will mostly die in a bed alone. Its profound sadness. The new york city emergency system has received a Record Number of 911 calls they are only asking people to call 911 if its a real emergency, if you cant breathe or have a really high fever. I had a personal experience with this, i think i told you. My grandmother was in the upper west side, 85 years old and has preexisting conditions and she tested positive for covid19. I understand, the thing is that when you know and love someone who has covid19 its a real emergency to you. I called 911 to get an ambulance there, she was by herself, and they picked her up. But it took a lot longer than it should have. So its really, really important. I know the desperation and fear israel out there, and its so important that my grandmother and others who are so vulnerable can get that service when they really need it. Dana we will keep in touch with you, and we wish her well. Hopefully she gets better very soon. In simpler times when police would arrive to break up at a party it might have been because the music was too loud. Now in some cases it could be a matter of life or death. Health officials are telling americans to avoid gathering in groups so what can Law Enforcement actually do when people refuse to listen . We will have that next. Newdayse refi shortcuts the process. Veterans can refinance with no income verification, no appraisal, and no out of pocket costs. One call could save you 2000 a year. 8xn3k89pzhqaodqsh h qva pzaua ndg o finding the right words can be tough. N it comes to autism, finding understanding doesnt have to be. Together, we can create a kinder, more inclusive world for the millions of people on the autism spectrum. Go to autismspeaks. Org dana all right. Im a fox news alert for you now. We just got word that the United States has now more than 200,000 cases of coronavirus. For context, the United States passed 100,000 cases on friday night. So it took about five days to go from 100,000 to 200,000 and of course we are testing more so that was somewhat to be expect expected. Some states are considering drastic measures to enforce orders during the coronavirus pandemic but how strong can Law Enforcement be when people refuse to listen . Andrew mccarthy is a former attorney and Philip Holloway is a criminal defense attorney and former police officer. Its going to become a bigger issue. You saw in Los Angeles Police having to break up a 1yearolds birthday party. Governor cuomo today announcing that the playgrounds will now be closed. That people are going to need and want to be outside so what can Police Actually do . Dana i think what you find in these emergency situations is that you have more of a practical political problem than a legal problem. As a practical matter you need to be able to have the authority to arrest in order to be able to go in and dispersed people because if they dont think that they can be arrested, obviously they can ignore the police and then they have a bigger problem. At this time they dont want to be processing people. They are talking about letting people out of the jails. It really requires a soft touch and trying to work cooperatively with people rather than adhesively. Dana and how do you feel . If i could add to that, there is a real tension that exists in many places, and then the Law Enforcement counterparts are certainly true in my state of georgia and officials that im in contact with. They dont want to go outside the bounds of what the law allows, they tend to take their oath of office very seriously. One thing that keeps popping up in conversations, they dont want to push the tensions with the public to far. Theres a very real concern that if they have too much of a heavy hand, to andys point, they might inflame tensions to the point of social or civil unrest. We dont want to have our jails filled with anybody, Law Enforcement is having to walk a delicate line here for sure. Dana Andy Mccarthy and phil holloway, we appreciate you being here with us today because this would even get more real. I will give you a chance to get out quick last word for us on what people should be expecting. As you just pointed out the number is getting much worse. Again what we need here is a soft touch, not too much of a hammer. Dana all right. And we need everybody to behave and follow the law. Thank you.
