Now facing directives to stay home. Lots to get through this hour. We begin our coverage live from atlanta at the centers for Disease Control and prevention. Governor andrew cuomo describes new york as a canary in the coal mine for the rest of the country and as the numbers come in from the rest of this country, thats exactly what federal Health Officials are seeing. Take a listen. The rest of the country is following a similar trajectory right now is new york. There are different places on the curve but the curves are starting to look the same, and so we want people to understand that when you lean into aggressive mitigation efforts early, you can flatten the curve. After being denied entry to ports in multiple countries, the cruise ship and its support ship were allowed to transit the panama canal and i will wait for mission to drop off passengers in fort lauderdale, florida. At least 76 of those passengers and 117 crews have developed flulike symptoms and for elderly passengers have died. In an oped in the south florida sun sentinel, writes the covid19 situation is one of the most urgent tests of our common humanity, to slam the door in the face of these people but to raise our values. International Health Experts say social distancing is beginning to lower infection rates in many parts of the world. Including parts of the u. S. , but bringing cases down is going to require wide scale testing to isolate infected persons. Everyones talked about the curve and everyone talks about stabilization. The question is, how do you go down . And going down isnt just about a lockdown and let go. Several medical centers have been considering the possibility of doubling up patients on ventilators to stretch out thin supplies. Both the department of health and Human Services issued some guidance today saying that that should only be used as a last resort. Dana thank you so much. One new york City Hospital is telling doctors to think more critically when deciding which patients get ventilators. And that is according to our corporate cousins at the wall street journal. The journal reports the head of emergency medicine at nyu email doctors about the change. He wrote doctors would be supported if they withhold futile intubation. So if it wont change a patients fate, dont use it. The hospital told the wall street journal they were just reemphasizing guidelines already in place. So lots of questions for a wonderful person named dr. Dr. William, chairman and president of Access Health international, design a strategy to develop the first treatment for hiv aids and last fall, he chaired the u. S. China Health Summit in wuhan where this all began. And thank you so much for being available to us today. One thing that a little bit confusing and maybe you could help us understand is us question that we still dont know how contagious the viruses. People can get reinspected. When will we be able to know more about that so we can plan ahead for getting the economy back on track . We know its highly infectious and as the days go by, we are learning its more infectious than we thought it was a month ago, even two weeks ago. So it is highly infectious. As infectious or maybe even more than seven strains of influenza. You asked a very interesting second question which is can you be reinfected once you have survived the infection and that question is still open. Its because in the case of sars, there was evidence that people could be reinfected after they had recovered from the first infection and certainly there is evidence in animals that animals who also have coronavirus may be reinfected. I shouldnt say we dont know the answer yet for this virus, for the virus that is causing the covid19. Its possible. May be somewhat less likely because you make a more aggressive immune response, but there are a lot of unknowns. We dont know how long your immune system protection even if you have cleared the virus. Its going to take some time before we have the answer. Its not time to do the studies, its just how long it takes you to follow somebody whos been infected and recovered to see what happens to them. Dana right. Its a race against the clock. I also think there is some confusion about masks. Whether we should use them as your out and about, healthy today, if i go to the grocery store, should i wear them. Take a look at even the Surgeon General and the president of the United States both trying to grapple with this issue. Take a look. If you have a mask and it makes you feel better, then by all means we are right, but know that the more you touch your face, the more you put yourself at risk i know that right now, the data isnt quite there to say there is a benefit of individuals to the individua wearing a mask. We will take a look at it for a period of time. Not forever. We want our country back. Were not going to be Wearing Masks forever but it could be for a short period of time after we get back into gear, i could see Something Like that happening for a period of time. But i would hope it would be a very limited period of time. Doctors will come back and say for the rest of our lives we have to wear masks. Dana as we try to figure this out, in your opinion, what would you recommend for people . Firstly, you get some protection for people around y you. Its also a psychological effect. That is if youre wearing a mask, youre going to be more aware of your surroundings. More aware of the danger. You can be infected or possibly infect others and then finally file that you have to put the mask on your face, it prevents you from touching your face which is one of the major ways you can be infected, so theres a number of reasons that we should wear masks as we go out. I think as the president said where its not forever, let me just say whats happening around the world. You look at austria, you cant go into a shop anymore if youre not wearing a mask. Its against the law. Also if you look at what happened in italy, first people thought you were nuts if you are wearing a mask. Now they think youre nuts if youre not wearing a mask and in china, its more of a sign that you respect your fellow citizens. So theres a lot of reasons to recommend wearing a mask. After ive heard this recent discussion, i voted a lot of mass myself just now. Dana that gives me some perspective indeed. Can i ask you one last question, and its kind of putting you on the spot, but for somebody like you with the expertise that you have in the background that you have, what is the biggest problem you would like to see us try to solve . Is there anything that that keeps you up at night, but is there a question or a worry that you have we should be paying attention to . There is. And its called contact racing. The way that chinese control this and koreans, singaporeans, and others control this is by isolation of those who are exposed. Not just those who are infected. And it wasnt only based on tests. They did it regardless of the test results because they didnt necessarily trust their test results. I had a friend, an american who flew from frankfurt to shanghai. There was somebody on the plane infected. Everybody on the plane was contacted and placed for 14 days in isolation in a hotel room. They could not unlock, they couldnt leave their door for 14 days from time of exposure. Thats how the chinese did it. We dont do anything like that yet. We need to be more aggressive about contact racing and mandatory isolation of people who have been in contact with those who are infected. Thats what gets me up at night because i dont want our country to go the way italy is going. Today is worse than yesterday for italy. They are not out of the woods yet. And even though people are staying home, the italian authorities arent doing the contact racing. Im glad you asked me that because that actually does keep me up at night. Dana im glad that i asked you that too. May be able to keep me up tonight too as well. Well have you back, thank you so much, your expertise is invaluable. Youre welcome, thank you. Dana the president is scheduled to speak with internet and phone providers in less than half an hour. A chief White House Correspondent john roberts is live with more. Just laughing because thats all that we needed, Something Else to keep us up at night. The president will be speaking in the next 20 minutes or so to a number of the Biggest Telecom and Internet Service providers, at t will be among them and a number of issues on the table first and foremost, bandwidth and connectivity. Weve got all these people who are now working from home telecommuting and thats putting a strain on the system like we have never seen before. Couple that together with students who are now beginning Distance Learning rather than going to school, theres also the fact that telemedicine is now going to be a big part of medicare and medicaid. That requires an awful lot of bandwidth and then just for Recreational Purposes with all of these people who are under stayathome orders, theres a lot of people who were going to ondemand Video Services like netflix, amazon prime, hbo, and some of the movie theaters are actually running ondemand movies that are currently in the theaters because the theaters are closed and thats all putting a huge strain on the system. So the president wants to make sure that the internet providers are doing all they can to keep up with the demand. And then theres also this issue of access as well. Still a lot of people in this country who do not have access to some sort of internet portal, so what can companies do to try to get access for people who otherwise wouldnt have it . Big telecom and Internet Service providers are doing things like offering free Internet Service for students telling people not to worry about going over on data plans, allowing people to go beyond what theyve paid for but like he has with other industries, wants to make sure that these Internet Service providers and Telecom Companies are doing everything they can to respond to this crisis. Dana that means that workers are on the front lines as well. John roberts, thank you. Up next, fly some in the media are calling for networks to stop airing the president s Coronavirus Press briefings, and later with your kids home from school, is now the perfect time to teach them some practical life lessons . Mike rowe will way in. Thats me. By using your va streamline refi benefit, one call to newday usa can save you 2,000 a year. Thats me. [indistinct conversation] can i help you . Yes were stuck. The career skills that really matter like teamwork, responsibility, and serving others. Hey. Can i help you . Are the ones you learn here. Welcome to mcdonalds. Can i help you . Balanced nutrition for strength and energy. Whoohoo great tasting ensure with 9 grams of protein, 27 vitamins and minerals, and nutrients to suppimmune health. Dana President Trump and his Coronavirus Task force continuing to give news conferences to give millions of americans updated on the covid19 pandemic but there are some in the media who are calling for networks to stop airing them live. Watch. Im not sure that we should carry that live. I think we should run snippets. I think we should do it afterwards and get the pertinent points to the American People because he is never, ever going to tell you the truth. Its above my pay grade, it seems crazy to me that everyone is still taking them. If it were up to me, and its not, i would stop putting those briefings on live tv. Not out of spite but because it is misinformation. Dana my next guest says it is good that President Trump is doing this press conferences, so he says maybe they should not be longer than 30 minutes. Fox news contributor and former white house secretary Ari Fleischer joins me now. I think its kind of strange that somebody would not want to cover the president because one of the things i find is that in. So he has these little news nuggets that he sprinkled throughout, so i feel like you have to be paying attention the entire that in a crisis like this, they were a people who dont want the president to be seen on tv and its not because he is accurate or inaccurate, its actually because his ratings, job approval is going up. Thats the reason. His job approval was going down, theyd be the first to insist on broadcasting it live. Thats whats driving them. And they cant stand to see the president have any kind of success. Its bad for democracy when people start calling on the media to censor the president at a time like this. Its not what we should be doi doing. Dana right. And we are also talking about china and you have a president of the United States who is out there every day taking questions from a lot of reporters for as many minutes as they want to go on last night and speaking of the international angle, secretary pompeo was talking about this critical need to get transparency underway and get accurate numbers from places like china. Listen. When you hear doctors talk about risk him and talk about fatalities trying to think about how to model what they need is data. They need data from italy, they need data from china, they need data from iran. They need every country to step up and provide accurate transparent information. We cant have that, if we have disinformation instead, there were more lives that will begin risk not only today but in the weeks ahead as we battle this enormous challenge. Dana i thought that was so interesting because we are asking their Health Professionals to make decisions based on the data that they have and we have to ensure that this data is accurate not just for the United States come up the good of the world and we have two in some way make china accountable for that. No question. And i dont understand why the press is tougher on President Trump than they are on president xi but they seem to be giving them a general pass for this. In fact, theyve now surpassed china. He believes that . The press reports said anyway because otherwise they would have to challenge china. And they just dont seem interested in that. Theres no upside to that for accurate or honest reporting. So again, many reporters are doing their best to as scientific questions but theyre still too much of a strain in the media where it was just politically confronting everything and anything donald trump does and really give china a pass. Thats not going to cut it for this crisis. The American People want deeper, fully reporting. Dana the other thing is, journalists here in america really could help their fellow journalists in china if they were to shine a light on whats happening there. Absolutely. And that notion of transparency which the press should be for, what youd like to see in the rose garden and the briefing room, the president doing his part i would argue, it should be applied to china as well. Should be applied to these adversary nations, we cant give them a pass in the media should not be the ones yielding, acquiescing, not holding their feet to the fire for pointing out that chinas numbers are not reliable. That should be a regular part of all they reporting on the numbers from china. We put those after things were sports, why isnt there therefore these Chinese Statistics . Dana i like that. Im going to make a graphic with a giant asterisk. Thank you so much, stay safe up there. Thank you, dana. Dana up next, a symbol of hope in new york harbor, comfort now accepting noncoronavirus patients to relieve overwhelmed hospitals. We are live at the docks. By the end of my world tour ill turn you all into rock zombies. Rock and roll [ screaming ] if were gonna save the world we need to unite all the trolls. Like country. The country trolls look friendly. Get em. [ screaming ] hip hop. Tiny diamond is my name peace and love tiny and daddy out. And techno. Get ready for the drop. Wait for it. Come on man one more time yeah. We have four radiology suites, a scanner aboard the ship. We also have 80 icu beds, ventilator capability, pacu, we have our own galley which can serve thousands of meals per day to provide support to the crew as well as the patient population. Its enormous. Dana the Commanding Officer of the u. S. Naval hospital shipped comfort on his capabilities which are incredible. Is now accepting noncovid19 patients to relieve the strain on doctors and nurses. Live in new york city. Good afternoon. The u. S. Naval hospital ship comfort is expected to begin taking on patients today slowly. We have to wait until this process gets ironed out but eventually we are told some 50 noncovid19 patients today will be allowed on board. Remember, these are noncovid19 patients. They will be tested for covid19 at their respective hospitals and then screened once again before boarding. Patients will be transferred to the comfort by ambulance. The patients are being chosen by their respective hospitals in collaboration with state health and navy officials. Is based on what their medical needs are and how long they need to be hospitalized. These ships, for instance are not equipped for pediatrics or for obgyn care. They cant deliver babies. The patients primary doctor and the doctors on board will maintain communication throughout. No visitors will be allowed on board the comfort to visit these patients, but the good news is patients will not need their insurance card, the cost of care are covered by the u. S. Government. Has a sister ship, the mercy which is docked in malta los angeles and so far that ship has taken aboard nine noncovid19 patients but these photos give us an idea of what its like inside the Navy Medical Personnel are suiting up with personal protective equipment treating every patient as though they do have covid19 to make sure they can protect against an outbreak on board the ship. The secretary of the navy spoke to fox news just moments ago. They have the ability to isolate and i think if they had to isolate, they have the procedures in place and they would take that person off the ship and put them somewhere else and then go through the process of cleaning just like everyone else has to do. 1,000 hospital beds but 1200 medical personnel from all over the east coast coming to new york and our greatest time of need. The mayor here in new york saying the worst is yet to come and it does bring us some comfort that they are here to help us. Dana indeed, its a beautiful sight. Thank you. The u. S. Military is stepping up in other ways as well. More than 100 sites nationwide to convert into hospitals to help save lives during the pandemic. One prominent location that you see here is the Javits Center in new york city. Joining me now is fox news senior strategic analyst, general jack keane, former vice chief of staff of the army and chairman for the institute of the study of war. Where else could the military set up these kinds of hospitals . Its interesting to see new yorkers feel so comforted by the comfort arriving yesterday and almost like a relief man obviously there is not all across america but other military sites could be used . Most definitely. The United States military is going all out here to help the American People. This is the same military that risked their lives to help people in foreign lands and also help them with disasters. And i think i know exactly how they feel about this, because they rarely ever get difference directly to American Peoples lives and i believe that they are honored to do it, and theyre very eager to do it. And that youre going to see in a sense of urgency and enthusiasm. What youre defining here is nothing short of remarkable through the corps of engineers and have to get a lot of credit here. He put that center together in four days from an empty major Convention Hall to what youve seen. And he intends to do that in the direction of fema to 100 plus other sites. While theyre not disclosing those sites because the mayors and the governors have to decide, we already know where some of them will be. The Mccormick Center in chicago, huge facility, 3,000 patients and they will be the 19 patients. The football stadium in seattle, another facility in sacramento, another one in new orleans, in miami, tampa, orlando, and obviously fema is concentrating on urban centers where the spread of covid19 is much greater then it is in Rural Communities because of the density of population. But this will be nothing short of remarkable what theyre able to do in a short period of time. I believe there will be some issues here, and it will be largely surrounding the staffing. Putting the facility together as one thing, getting the doctors and nurses and other assistance and there was quite another. For volunteers who used to be in the health care to come back. Theyve got thousands of volunteers to do that and President Trump much to his credit here has ordered up a Selective Reserve an individual Ready Reserve and in some cases call them involuntarily because they have the authority to do that for a National Emergency and now its up to a million people. They dont need all those because it will focus on Health Care Professionals but thats where some of the staffing is going to come from. They dont want to bring people back on active duty who are already on the front lines as medical professionals so they dont have to discriminate in terms of who they are selecting. I think that issue will be there, but its very solvable. Dana it is. General jack keane, great perspective and of course the military dealing with 600 Service Members infected of 18 and one day so while theyre trying to help us, also trying to keep themselves safe. General jack keane, thank you. The state Department Working to bring the thousands of americans home from overseas during this pandemic. Dana secretary of state mike pompeo says the department has never faced an evacuation of the scale as officials try to bring home countless americans that are still stuck overseas because of coronavirus. State Department Officials say thousands of people have already made it back but thousands more still need to get home. Not as Airlines Ground more fights and countries issue more travel restrictions. A Senior Foreign Affairs correspondent greg palkot is reporting live from london and greg, this is a story repeated all over the world of americans being stuck. We make its a major global story. Her the word coming from the state department to americans who are sanded abroad during this coronavirus pandemic, get out while you can. Tens of thousands have been strand of the last couple of weeks, called out by closing borders, quarantines, and canceled flights. The u. S. Embassy in the early days had to scramble to keep up including in peru where Salt Lake City and the family were for eight days. Take a look. I understand that this is the first pandemic that weve seen like this in the history of our world and that clearly not prepared for thousands of us stuck in peru and theyre still hundreds and hundreds of people still stuck there. Embassy staff they are in places like ecuador have now been working around the clock to try to meet folks needs chartering planes, getting people from remote places, getting the u. S. Military involved. Right now, the state Department Says well over 25,000 americans have been repatriated from over 50 countries and some 100 more flights are planned and more than 9,000 more passengers identified. Here is secretary of state pompeo. Never in the departments 200 30year history have we let a worldwide evacuation of such enormous geographic complexity and such geographic scale. We have no higher duty to the American People than to pull this off. They met they are new challeng challenges. Health officials are not even allowing americans out of hotels and now just deciding to stay in place, hunker down and ride through it. Is a big task, it is a challenge, it is not over by a long shot. Dana unemployment could top 32 for 47 million jobs lost, almost unthinkable but very real for people. And Julia Russell is one of them, a physical therapist who just applied for unemployment and joins me now. Julia, tell me a little bit about what happened over the past week. We will try to get back to her in work that out. Shes a physical therapist in nashville who was working and then they had a lot of people cancel and she is now with her husband who is a physical therapist, theyre going to have to file for unemployment making some tough choices but also trying to make the most of it. In moments, we will talk to doctors on board this floating hospital. We will talk to his ceo from a Major Trucking Company and get you live in chicago and let you know the pulse of America Today on a tuesday afternoon. Top of the hour, bill hemmer reports. Dana many schools are switching to virtual classrooms to reduce the spread of covid19 has teachers, students, and parents are making a big transition into the new normal where some are saying this is an opportunity to teach life lessons to kids. Lets bring in a mike rowe, host of returning the favor and well talk about those kids and just a moment. You had something you wanted to say about Julia Russell, the physical therapist that was just furloughed and had to apply for unemployment. We were having problems with her audio, but what if you want say about her . First of all, its a metaphor for our times, technical difficulties all adjusting to do our own jobs and every imaginable relative way. And right now, fascinating conversation going on on your network and all the networks we are making a distinction between the essential workers had nonessential workers. Not to oversell it, but theres something tricky with this going on here because in regards to an economy, i dont think there such thing as a nonessential workers. What she does for money is obviously very important to her family but its also important to all of us because this is basically a quilt. You start pulling on jobs and tugging on careers over here and over there, the whole thing will bunch up in a weird way. Essential workers to exist, but in my mind, they desist more in the old dirty jobs modality where you look at First Responders and garbage men and plumbers and pipe fitters, so i just wanted to make a point that when you talk about the economy, its essential. When we talk about the specifics of the job and the chips are down, you look to Health Care Workers and firemen and sanitation engineers and so forth. In maybe its a distinction without too much of a difference but in my mind mothers no such thing right now is a nonessential worker. Dana you have a double Knee Replacement and you have to put a physical therapy, she is a physical therapist and thats quite essential to your healing and for that office to close is a huge problem. The other thing i wanted to mention to you and have you addresses a lot of people who worked in these jobs that were just laid off, theyre very prideful people. And they would never think to ask the government for anything. But in the situation where the government is mandating that you stay home, how can we convince people like that to accept the help thats being offered . Its very, very tough. Youre talking about years of inertia, so many people mother very identity is wrapped up in their job, and when they lose their job, they kind of double down on their own romantic version of themselves and they dont go right into the category theyre talking about. Still have to get in front of it, so i think what youre saying is people have to get in front of their own notion of whats appropriate, whats dignified, whats humiliating, whats essential. Obviously, how do we know how long it will be there . Take it now. You need it now. Dont wait. Dana we have moms and dads were home and thinking how do we do this . Reading an article about a woman saying that will be a great time to teach my kids how to boil pasta and a dad said im going to teach my kid how to change a tire. Things like that, practical life skills are also important to learn. Ive been saying this for years but through the lens of my own foundation for trans people in the skilled trades, but also connected to the cost of college which as weve seen between egregious and obscene. I think one of the Silver Linings that might come out of this when the dust settles is that people are going to get accustomed not only to communicating the way we are right now, but truly for learning. I just watched a lecture from mit last week on this very device for free. The very same lecture you would pay an awful lot of money to sit through when you look at harvard and you look at mit and some of these schools with 40 billion endowments who are not issuing refunds for the canceled courses, you start to realize, what we really paying for . On the opportunity to truly learn, not just be entertained. Of course its important to learn some of the basic life skills of course but im saying even beyond that, the business of sitting down and getting a useful education in the same dynamic that you and i are engaged in right now, thats real, and if two or three months from now as things go back to Something Like normal, people are going to abandon this dynamic. I think it could completely read redefined and id be a fool if i didnt mention the principal and new jersey not far 25 of these chrome books. Its convinced that the future for kids is going to be tied to their ability to use that tool and i think shes right. Dana i think she is right also awesome and i think thats amazing. He said its a lease that you could do, and i feel like for those of us who havent been laid off, we have an obligation to find those who need help and help them. Let me give you the last word. We also have an obligation to keep our people busy. I sat here yesterday and did an episode of returning the favor and im proud to do it because they got a dozen people engaged. I just did a new show for discovery yesterday sitting in the same spot. So if we are home, and if we have the ability to pivot, then the opportunity is extraordinary to reconnect and figure out whatever it is we do, whats that look like in the age of corona .
