Reporter theres going to be a lot of news coming out the rest of today from these, dana. We got the transcripts literally a few minutes ago. We are poring over them with a fine tooth comb. Well be bringing you all the new breaking details. We wanted to quickly right now bring you a couple of the key highlights. Ambassador to the eu gordon sondland. Were going to bring you excerpts from his transcript. Asked about a quid pro quo between President Trump and ukraines president. Sondland said i believe what mayor giuliani passed on or what i heard from volker likely coming from giuliani. The president never made that statement to me or anyone to, the best of my knowledge. Is that whatever the ukrainian was going to promise in any context, he wanted it public. Now, sondland also said after bill taylor texted him on september 9, 2019, that, quote, i think its crazy to with hold Security Assistance for help with a political campaign. Ambassador sondland called President Trump and in response to a question about that, sondland said, what do you want from the ukraine . The president then said, i want no quid pro quo. I want zelensky to do the right thing. Now, moving on to volker next, President Trumps special envoy, was his special envoy to ukraine. He was asked in this deposition, why Rudy Giuliani had a role in managing u. S. Policy towards ukraine at all. He said this. He said because the ukrainians asked to be connected to him in order to try to get across their message of being different from the past. Question, so the ukrainians believed that by speaking to Rudy Giuliani, they could communicate to President Trump . And he said, volker said, that information flow would reach the president. So this would seem to show that at least one of the witnesses in the testimony released today was offering new, brand new insights into what has reportedly been Rudy Giulianis alleged role in managing some official Ukraine Foreign policy channels. Dana, as i mentioned, to you, were going to keep bringing this stuff to you. Before i go, i want to mention breaking this hour also, fox news is confirming that Nick Mulvaney has been summoned here november 8th, friday. Not a lot of hope hes going to show up, but we want to make you aware of that. Dana thank you very much. Lets bring in bret baier. Right now, bret, democrats yesterday did two transcripts. They did two transcripts. Seems their method of trying to keep this in the news and now they have their attention. It does seem that sondland did substantially change his comments from the first round. Thats right, dana. They are feeling the void here. They have witnesses who are not showing up for testimony and depositions and theyre putting out these transcripts. Being focused on them, there is news in them. You are right, ambassador sondland basically said he had discussed this linkage of aid and corruption and making sure that it was public on the ukrainian side with vladamir zelenskys main aide in this meeting. It goes on in this q and a by the way, ten hours of testimony that sondland essentially said that he communicated that the aid probably wasnt going to come forward until there was some public acknowledgement of what they had talked about. And that the meeting with President Trump, or call or get together, was probably contingent on that as well. Democrats will point to that as saying that was the silent quid pro quo that theyve been pointing to. Dana i think now, too, that sondland does say that he didnt hear this directly from the president. He said that giuliani asked, maybe others, yes, but not from the president. I wonder about the democrats wanting to pull on though threads. We know the republicans have a lot of complaints about how these investigations have been done in the last couple of weeks. They say its been secretive, they havent been able to do crossexamination, the president s lawyers havent been there, that it hasnt been fair. What do you think about the fact that we have this out today. This is newsy, but yet they still have the process problems from two weeks ago . I think the process problems are going to start to evaporate once they have public hearings in the next couple of week, and that will be much more focused on the American People getting a sense of what this story line is. Back to sondland, he describes this phone call that has largely been in the press, where allegedly President Trump told him to say no quid pro quo. He describes it a lot differently. That he is hearing all these rumors out there about what exactly is going on. He calls the president and that its some kind of short call. The president is kind of angered. And instead of asking him all of these different details, he says, what do you want from ukraine . And the president says, i want zelensky to do the right thing. He says, what does that mean . And the president says, no quid pro quo and essentially hangs up on him. I dont know if you get the there there on the sondland testimony at that point. Dana no. And so gillian just mentioned. Now have the chief of staff being called the testify on friday. There have been several administration subpoenas that have gone out. They have gone unanswered, as gillian said. There are noshows from the administration. Theyre not showing up for those. Any reason to think mulvaney might change his mind . Two weeks ago he did the press conference and the White House Briefing room, said quid pro quo, yeah, of course, thats how its always done. Thats how business is done. Then he walked it back later. Has a confrontational interview with Chris Wallace on that. Im assuming he doesnt want to appear behind closed doors with these guys. I think youre right. I dont know for sure. I do think there are a number of white house officials and maybe even exwhite house officials who will be really reluctant to be part of this process and theyre going to be dragging kicking and screaming there. And maybe through a court order there. Dana right. And thats gonna take some time. Time is on the side of the administration here, as it drags on, i think. Dana were now less than a year from an election. This is the first time in our countrys history you had this done in an actual election year. One last question for you and your thoughts about this. Were hearing minority leader mccarthy, Kevin Mccarthy of california, thinking about making change on the Intelligence Committee and putting jim jordyn, the congressman, taking him from the Oversight Committee, trying to put him on the Intelligence Committee. What do you think of that . Theres a number of ways to look at it. Its a light against devin nunes or this palace intrigue. Its more like what the democrats did. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi choosing adam schiff over jerry nadler. In that this is the more defensive, articulate defender of the administration on cable air waves every day, and perhaps hes your best foot forward when it comes to defending for the administration. Dana bret, well let you get back to reading all of that. All right, dana. Dana more on the reaction from capitol hill. Lets bring in someone who understands all of this thats going on. What do you have . First is part of this joint statement when they released the transcripts here from sondland and volker. This is from the acting chair of the Oversight Committee and the aforementioned adam schiff. The testimony of ambassadors volker and sondland show the effort of the president and his agent, Rudy Giuliani to press the ukraine to announce things in this president s personal interest. This is something that is Rudy Giuliani is present in these two depositions as we start to parse things. Theres one line that jumped out at me from gordon sondland, ambassador to the European Union on some of Rudolph Giulianis demand. Mr. Sondland telling investigators i had no idea that he brought up the bidens until i saw the call report. I dont recall the date, the place or time, then i put it together. This is key here because when you go back to this exchange of Text Messages with bill taylor, who was the acting ambassador to ukraine and then gordon sondland, that they said there was no quid pro quo. Bill taylor expressed some concern in that text message. He said to sondland, i think its crazy that with hold Security Assistance for help with a political campaign. Sondland shot back and said the president has been crystal clear, theres no quid pro quo of any kind. Then they took the conversation off line. Dana that would seem to match what sondland said in his testimony that bret and gillian and i were just talking about. That he repeats that, the president said no quid pro quo, just want him to do the right thing and then hangs up on him. What, though, would republicans i imagine are going to continue to press this point, which is that the aid was released to ukraine. Right . Right, right. Theyre going to say that shows there wasnt a quid pro quo. Democrats might argue was there a threat, they were trying to get this white house meeting. Again, its all up to interpretation, what is in the eye of the beholder . Thats why high crimes and misdemeanors, it doesnt have to be a criminal offense. Its within the realm of justice within the constitution. Dana reminder, this is a political decision. Thank you very much. Well keep an eye on capitol hill for any reaction to the transcripts. At least nine americans are dead including six children at the hands of Mexican Drug Cartel gunmen. This is for the record. Nina and four of my grandchildren are burned, shot up. Dana heart breaking reaction from a relative showing video of the burned out car where some victim weres discovered. The nation shocked a family and community in mourning and President Trump calling for action. This all happened in northern mexico. Its not clear yet exactly what went down or how the family ended up in the crossfire. William la jeunesse is live there. Youve been following this story. What is the latest you have from investigators . Reporter dana, the fbi is investigating but consider, these assaults happened in three separate locations miles apart between different vehicles about 70 miles south of the arizona border when these three families came under fire. According to surviving children, one mother waved at the on coming attackers as an innocent. The mistaken identity story im told by a state department story, is a stretch. The victims include nina and her 8monthold twins. Also she had a son and daughter ages 9 and 11 who died. Then theres christina langford, found in separate locations along with two children shot to deat death. I was so angry and so angry and yet so sad. It was horrifying. All we could do was immediately start thinking what happened, at the same time we were all devastated. Reporter so the mexican attorney general released a statement saying they rescued two of the victims bound and gagged near one of the ambush sites. They have a man in custody possibly connected with a stolen car and three high powered rifleds. Dana what else can you tell me about the family. Reporter the victims belonged to a sect that broke off from the mormon church. There are a dozen of these colonies in chihuahua. The car belonged to nanina. She was on her way to tucson to pick up her husband to celebrate a wedding anniversary. The other two mothers who were visiting friend. Theres no reporting yet to suggest these women were targeted because they opposed or were a threat to the cartels. This religious community lived a nonconfrontational existence. We need help from our people. We are u. S. Citizens. Every one of them have u. S. Citizenship. I didnt ever in my life to be having this type of conversation. Reporter so utah senator mitt romney spent summers nearby. He called this a dangerous area. I will tell you on friday, the sheriff warned americans not to travel over the border not far from where this happened. Back to you. Dana thank you. For more on this, lets bring in the former special agent in charge of the dea and an opinion columnist for the wall street journal and an expert on this region. Derek, if i could start with you. Do you think they were deliberately targeted or could it have been mistaken identity and a cartel fight . Dana, anythings possible, but with the mexican cartels, we know theyre ruthless, theyre evil people, monsters in many ways. As you look at that violence, its worse in iraq and afghanistan and its 70 miles south of our border. We do know they retaliate. We watched the video unfold two weeks ago when Chapo Guzmans son was released but an of the cowards in mexico, they decided not to take him on. Even though his fentanyl is killing americans every day. Fentanyl killed so Many Americans last year. El chapos son is a big part of the endeavor to sell that poison. Dana President Trump, today tweeted this. He said if mexico neither requests help in cleaning out these monsters the u. S. Stands ready, willing and able to get involved and do the job quickly and effectively. The great president of mexico has made this a big issue but the cartels have become so powerful you sometimes need an army to defeat an army. Said the United States is ready to wage war on the cartels and wipe them off the face of the earth. We merely await a call from your great new president. You know these government leaders and you follow them. Do you think thats something the Mexican Government wants the United States to step in and help with . Lets, first of all, accept the fact that u. S. Armed forces in mexico has been a very sensitive issue since the treaty of guadalupe. The idea that mexico protects its sovereignty very jealously and so there might be a hesitation for bringing in the u. S. But i think that theres Something Else missing in this conversation that a lot of times americans dont want to talk about which is demand for drugs coming from south america basically cocaine initially, although as the dea agent mentioned, fentanyl is now an important drug. That demand for drugs is what this supply is all about and how these cartels get empowered. Right . The estimation, Something Like 150 billion in 2016 spent by americans on illegal drugs. Now, because theyre illegal, they go directly into the pockets of criminals and they use them to buy gun, to buy officials, to buy judges and so forth. Its very hard to win a war on drugs when its a demand problem more than a supply problem. Dana if you were the dea chief today, what specifically would you want to get done . Maybe two things youd want to get done quickly. Im sorry, i was going to ask derek that. The first thing is you have to have unity of effort. You have to use the best and brightest resources of the United States government. I worked in washington a long time. I know we have some tremendous investigators. The problem is, theres no unity of effort right now. We need to designate the cartels as terrorists and go after them with the true capabilities of the u. S. Government and stop pretending that dana mary, do you agree about that . They are for sure terrorists. This was an act of terrorism in northern mexico. Dana it is very heart break. Thank you. House democrats releasing more transcripts from closed door testimony with witnesses in their impeachment investigation. Lets brynn in our panel. Kris wilson is a republican pollster for ted cruz. The founder of run for america and progressive activist. What do you think, david, about these transcripts coming out, volker and sondland were big gets for the democrats, but it was behind closed doors. Now you have this and questions, i guess, especially with sondland, changing his testimony a little bit to say, well, look, this is how i saw it . But still not implicating the president and wanting to quid pro quo. In fact, being quite specific that the president said he did not want that and hung up on him. Look, the republicans have asked for the transcripts. Were now seeing more light on it. Thats good for everybody. It doesnt look good for the president , frankly. Never good when people are chaining their stories, to come back, add new testimony. I think its far from clear. Obviously, there are people close to the situation. Well have more of these accounts. If i were the president , today is not a good day for me. They werent exactly a vindication. Dana the fact remains the aid was released. Democrats said they want to do impeachment based on this. We have these testimony transcripts. Seems like the republicans are closing ranks behind the president and it will take seismic evidence to change their mind. It is. I dont know that id agree that its not a good day for the president. Partial leaked transcripts allowed them to go wave a few Million Dollar off of this alone. Thats what the democrats do, continue to play into his game and allow him to suck them in. Not release everything. Then hes able to claim theyre not going about this in a fair and open manner which theyre not. Dana one of the things sondland says. I just saw it here. Basically, he says he doesnt know if the word barifma came up in the meetings. That would be a key question. That is what hunter biden worked on. Thats what the democrats think the president was demanding they look into, the bidens and barifma. Its not clear. We know going back to the comey incident, right, that that situation happened and jim comey left with an impression that the president was using words without using the words to say lay off this investigation. Its possible the president didnt say it but the strong implication of whats going on here is pretty clear. And, look, the reality is these witnesses, as they pile up, thats gonna be the challenge more than any one individual transcript. Were going to see more of these. Weve got mulvaney. Theyll all be in public. Some of them inevitably will contradict their transcript and that will be its own set of problems. Dana do you think theyre going to call up Rudy Giuliani . He comes up a lot. A strong implication of some sort of wrongdoing. Is that an Impeachable Offense . How will this come down . We are less than a year from election day. That is the point. We are getting close to election day. The American Public is saying just let it play out, just have the election. What it boils down to, they are trying to impeach the president on something that wasnt ever withheld. If you have a democrat strategist, it is hard to explain why that is something we should stop accomplishing nis at all in washington and focus on impeachment whenever there are a lot of problems that could be dealt with. It continues to drip out in the way of excerpts from the deposition, excerpts from transcripts instead of all of it coming out at once. Dana quick last word. You cant say let the Voters Decide when the issue is sat hand is did the election tip the scales on the election. Only if joe biden was the nominee. Hes absolutely one of the candidates. Dana glad that youre here. Thank you for rolling with us on the breaking news. We have more of that breaking news coming up. Were going to head back to capitol hill up next. Their medicare options. Were getting more news out of the transcripts from closed door interviews as two key figures in the impeachment investigation released last hour. Gillian turner is on capitol hill. Its been about 32 minutes since we last saw you and youre getting even more new information for us. What do you have . Reporter going through these transcripts, trying to pick out the most news worthy stuff from the transcripts so we can bring it straight to you guys. Ambassador sondland, gordon sondland, ambassador to the e. U. , asked about a meeting, impeachment investigators, excuse me, asked him about a meeting in the oval office with President Trump, secretary perry and kurt volker. Said the president repeatedly directed him to talk to his personal attorney. Sondland saying he wasnt even specific about what he wanted us to talk to giuliani about. He just kept saying talk to rudy. Talk to rudy. Now, dana, this is interesting because we also know, as i told you earlier, that sondland said the president told him that he did not want a quid pro quo with ukraine. The president told him, i want zelensky, the president of ukraine, i want zelensky to do the right thing. So, clearly, hes supporting his boss previous statements that he wasnt pressuring at any time. He wasnt pressuring the ukrainians to do anything in particular. Now i want to take you to volker. Some new stuff from volker. President trumps special envoy to ukraine, he was asked by impeachment investigators why Rudy Giuliani had a role in managing u. S. Policy towards ukraine in the first place. And he said, asked whether specifically giuliani was conveying messages on behalf of President Trump to the ukrainians. He said, i did not have that impression. I believed that he was doing his own communication about what he believed in and was interested in. So, again, another witness backing up President Trumps claims, dana, that he was investigating corruption efforts in ukraine and that he wasnt pressuring the Ukrainian Government to take any action in particular other than clamp down on its own corruption. This from President Trumps witnesses. Dana the other thing i noticed, some of you had a chance to look. There is in sondlands transcript, there is a reference to senator johnson of wisconsin. It says that senator johnson and ambassador taylor raised the possibility with him, that there might have been a link between getting aid and this investigation. Do you know anything about that . We havent really heard much about senator johnsons involvement here. Reporter i noticed that, too. Kind of the first time he had been injected into this scenario. Well get you some new details on that. But you are right, what you quoted was in the transcript. Dana Gillian Turner on capitol hill, thank you. Well be back in touch. Your personal information is son the agenda this hour on capitol hill. The senate panel is expected to hold a hearing on big tech and others who put your information and potentially our entire National Security at risk. A big focus will be on apple and a hot new social media app called tik tok owned by a Chinese Company. Neither of the companies will have a representative at the hearing, but microsoft will. Joining me now is chairman of the fcc. Great to have you here. This tik tok issue, 500 million users around the world. It is owned by a Chinese Company and theres concern from some members of congress that there might be some ways that this Chinese Company could get your information if youre using it. They have said through their general manager, no government foreign or domestic directs how we moderate tik tok. She goes on to say the Chinese Government does not tell them to remove any content. She said we would not do so if asked. Is our government, our congress, right to be skeptical . I think the bipartisan concern you see on capitol hill is reflective of the larger issue that we have with chinese companies. Chinese law requires any Company Subject to its jurisdiction to comply with certain requests from the government. As weve seen over the past month, whether it comes to the National Basketball association or e sports or even flag emojis reflecting taiwan, the Chinese Government is willing and able to excerpt its influence. When it comes to tiktok, how is that information collected . Where is it stored . Hows it being useed . We dont necessarily have answers and thats part of the reason a Bipartisan Group of senators got involved. Dana whats the remedy they would seek . Its unclear exactly what they would seek, but one of the things weve seen in the fcc when it comes to the networks of the future, we want to make sure we understand the risk right now as opposed to well down the line once these networks are built or once these apps are fully deployed. Dana i know you spent a lot of time on the 5g issue. Theres a race across the world. People want to get to 5g. How important is it to you to our own National Security and our growth, economic growth, for us to get to 5g and to do it well before the chinese . Its incredibly important. As we saw, the United States was home to the 4g revolution and the global app economy it spurred started here in the United States. 5g will be even more tra transformative. We want that innovation and investment to happen here. Especially because china, one of our geo political rifles, is taking certain steps to make sure they lead the world. Theyre picking national champion, subsidizing them and in many cases dana where are we in the race . Are we a little bit ahead in line with them or just behind . I think if you look at the objective evidence were in the lead. Weve got more spectrum coming up, Wireless Infrastructure is strong, Fiber Deployment which is critical for 5g is going strong as well. Dana theres been a dispute and even Hillary Clinton saying the ceo of facebook needs to pay a price for his decision basically saying theyre not going to police the truth and facts on political ads. Political ad spending in the 2020 race, check this out, 57 is going to be on digital. Thats different. So you oversee broadcast television, cable television, radio, satellite. But you dont have a role in policing the social media networks. Congress might ask you to do so. What would be the trump administrations position on that . I think it would depend on the nature of the legislation, but theres no question as these individual platforms have grown in power, the scrutiny of though platforms is increasingly coming into play on capitol hill. Were not sure where the conversation is going to go but look forward to hearing it. Dana how many people would you need to employ in order to Police Digital political ads . An army . Thats a good question. Pretty broad platforms and millions of people participate. Dana ajit pai, great to have you. Like wise. Dana mayor Pete Buttigieg feeling the heat after breaking into the top tier. Our own peter doocy talked with mayor pete last night. Dana 90 days until the Iowa Caucuses and Pete Buttigieg is finding himself near the top of the democratic 2020 pack and, of course, what comes with that . Attacks. Peter doocy just sat down with the mayor. Peter, what did he tell you . Reporter dana, for the first time this cycle theres an issue, a policy proposal, thats causing great dissension within the ranks of the entire democratic field top to bottom. It is elizabeth warrens 52 trillion medicare for all proposal. Now mayor pete is trying to figure out just how big a deal to make of his opposition to that here. Its not the only issue, but its a major issue. I get questions about it everywhere i go. What im hearing from iowans and voters across the country, theres a desire to do than build way past what we were able to do with the Affordable Care act. People want to be able to make their own decision whether to leave their private plan or not. Reporter buttigieg had to go back to south bend today to vote for his successor as mayor, but we talked to him as he left the tale end of a bus tour before he left iowa and this is a state rerevealed he does not have a ton of experience in until somewhat recently. First time i ever came here was to knock on doors as a volunteer for the obama campaign. Took a few days off work and came out here and learned a lot about not just about iowa, about the caucus process and about campaigning. And having come back since. Reporter so, mayor Pete Buttigieg was here knock on doors for barack obama back in 2008, that means in 2020, 2020, is not the first time that he has tried to defeat joe biden in the Iowa Caucuses. Dana . Dana we love trivia on the show. Peter doocy, great interview. Thank you very much. And im a big fan of my next guest, and hes a big fan of obituaries. He has such a fascination with them, hes written a whole book dedicated to the lives of famous people who may not have gotten the sendoff they deserved. Joining me is author of the new book mobituaries. Thanks, dana. Dana some of the smartest people i know, including my husband, read the obituaries. Hes british. He always reads them. He said if you get an obituary in the telegraph, you lived a great life. Its someones life from womb to tomb. Its a great beat if youre a writer. Writing about sports, entertainment, politics, because it depends on who die. Dana you write about some famous people. Wanted you to tell about marlena dietrich. I listened to that today on your podcast. I didnt know all the Amazing Things he she did. She deserves to be remembered as a fierce and fearless american patriot. This is a woman who is german to the the core. Sees whats happening with the rise of nazi germany. She renounces her german citizenship, invites the press to watch her become an american citizen. Shes completely denigrated by the german press at this point. She not only does that, she goes and she spends 18 months in western europe and in north africa with the troops. Danny thomas was her warmup comic. And said at the time, she almost got them killed, in a fox hole with howitzers firing overhead as she was firing for five service men. But she was 100 against hitler. Before the war, hitler had tried to lure her back to germany and sent his foreign minister with what was called a mothers cross to present to her, which would have made her essentially the queen of germany. Dana they gave her an opportunity to think about being the person that could possibly be his demise. Right. She told Douglas Fairbanks jr. That she had a plan to seduce hitler and kill him with a poison hair pin. Dana what do you hope people get from a book like this and stories like that . I think the past, you know, if you had aoeupb anxiety about the past, the future is the place to go. I tried to high lite lives worth living from all eras and also have fun with things like famous people who died. Dana i wanted to ask you that. Farrah faucet died on the same day as . Michael jackson. Michael jackson was a bigger story. He was a pop superstar about race, music, fashion, scandal. Dana the cowboys beat the giants last night. The star of the game was not a player on either team. It was this black cat. Bret larson. Do you think somebody released the black cat on the field and it wasnt a random thing . That is an interesting observation but i think that cat looks very feral. A little on the bulky side. Which could suggest it is somebodys cat. I would think if youre a feral cat and you are living in new jersey, for one, sorry. But for two, youre going to want to be in the stadium because there is all kinds of food. I imagine when the people leave there are scraps left over. Maybe mice to chase around and clearly here i was going to say baseball a Football Game to interrupt and you know a lot of giants fans think this cat caused them to win because it interrupted the game and then it broke their what do they call it . Hes at the two. And the cat is in the c. D. W. Red zone. C. D. W. People. A state trooper has come onto the field. The cat runs into the end zone. That is a touchdown. The cat is elusive. Kind of like barkley and elliott. They are trying to corner him. Theyve got him in the end zone. There are state troopers all around this cat which climbs up into the stands and the fans are running for their lives it goes back on the field again. Its running in the back of the end zone. Dana thats excellent commentating. Fast on your feet reporting. Dana looked like he was scared. A lot of noise. People who have cats know loud noises are scary. Dana thanks, everyone.
