Expressing his gratitude for the south korean government, tweeting, thank you to president moon of south korea for hosting the american delegation and me immediately following the very successful g20 in japan. While there it was great to call on chairman kim to have our very well covered meeting. Good things can happen for all. Hours after suggesting in a tweet kim jongun meet at the dmz, president and the north Korean Leader were shaking hands at the border between north and south korea. The president said the two agreed to designate teams to restart stalled nuclear discussions. Speed is not the object. We want to see if we can do a comprehensive good deal. Nobody knows how things turn out, but certainly this was a great day. This was a very legend aerbg very historic day. Reporter the two had previously designated teams to negotiate, though they had made little progress in getting north korea to dismantle its weapons programs. New york times reports an idea is taking shape inside the administration to create a foundation for these negotiations, one that would freeze instead of eliminate north koreas weapons program. National security adviser john bolton tweeted, i read this New York Times story with curiosity. Neither the staff nor i have discussed any desire to settle for a Nuclear Freeze by north korea. This was a reprehensible attempt by someone to box in the president. There should be consequences. While north koreas weapons programs are largely intact, kim jongun has adhered to his commitment to halt Ballistic Missile launches and nuclear testing. Dana rich edson at the white house, thank you. Joining me, tim keane and meredith sumpter. Got the yellow memo today. You and me. Good to have you both here. Let me first start with you, meredith. Many president s tried to deal with north korea. There are traditional methods and nontraditional methods. Nothing has worked so far. But these talks were at a complete stand still and this historic move by President Trump gets everybody to at least come back to the table and talk . Thats exactly right, dana. The talks had been stalled since february of this year. And there had been little life within those talks despite the very credible and serious efforts put forth by the special envoy for north korea and his team. You saw him just there in the clip behind the president. So the president did, with this move, restart talks, but what this does is masks an under lying challenge, which is that theres lack of Real Progress despite of years at the working level. The key question is, are you going to need that top leader level approach to make on ward progress with kim jongun . Dana tim, tell me a little about the positions here. This New York Times report, let me pull it up just for one sentence from it. Says that the concept would amount to a Nuclear Freeze, one that essentially enshrines the status quo and accepts the north as a nuclear power, something Administration Officials have often said they would never stand for. I know them well. They tend to have good sources. Do you think this is maybe overwritten or, as john bo lton says, a poison pill . I dont want to be distracted. I dont think even right now we should devote too much time to it. Look, the president crossed the border. Its so strange to be a veteran of that conflict when we didnt have a peace treaty for 70 years, to see the First American cross that border. Thats what we were ready to do. Thats what tens of thousands of soldiers were ready to do. It was a step in peace. Its so momentous, it escapes our ability for words. Theres Something Else that this president is doing personal diplomacy. Thats probably exactly what you need to do with a dictator. Dana this is also something i wanted to ask you, meredith. You follow this stuff very closely. Kim jongun is not like his father or grandfather. In some ways you would say hes much more open. Hes been willing to travel outside the country. He has invited now the president , if it was just 20 steps, big moment. The chinese leader has been to visit. Hes doing things that are different. What do you think he wants out of this . Certainly. He is far more open to a deal. He wants the north korean economy to be more of a modern economy. He is stronger in a sense than his father in that regard because he is looking to grow north korean links with outside countries. Weve seen him cultivate those ties with china, with russia, with south korea and other powers since you started to see negotiations with President Trump. But ultimately, what he is likely looking to do is to aim for a good enough deal with President Trump. So going back to the report in the New York Times as to whether or not the Trump Administration is considering a partial freeze, this is something that could play very well in terms of kim jonguns own priorities. He is likely willing to give up some part of his Nuclear Missile programs, but clearly not all of it, in exchange for the lifting of some sanctions on the north korean economy, giving a bit of breathing room there. The key question is, is there any veracity in this report and will the president choose to set them aside as he looks toward a path with kim jongun. Dana one thing we have with north koreans, one step forward, two steps back. Thats right. Dana since april theyve been testing missiles. Might not have been as egregious as before, was weve seen this happen over and over again. If you are the staff of kim jongun and now President Trump and now the leaders have said, get back to the table, try to get something done, what do you think is a realistic time frame to try to see some movement . Dana, thats the larger point. We shouldnt trust beijing, we shouldnt trust pyongyang. Theyre trying to cement in power at home. This enables him to do that. I dont know if theres an alternative. Whether were going to have a Nuclear Freeze or not, i think theres a window in the next two years to get Something Real done, but it will be at this personal level. Dana thank you. Fox news alert from the middle east. Irans foreign minister revealing that its stock pile of enriched uranium reached a critical limit set by the nuclear deal. The move khal chenninging Trumps Campaign against iran. We have more from jerusalem. Trey . Reporter dana, the iranians have made good on a threat to breach the uranium stock pile limit laid out in the nuclear deal. Speaking today in tehran, irans foreign minister confirmed that his country formally broke the terms of the agreement for the first time after President Trump pulled the United States out of the deal last year and reimposed heavy an shuns, iran threatened to stop abiding to the terms of the deal unless it was renegotiated. France, germany and britain have worked to find way for iran to work around sanctions but failed to come up with a solution. Its important to note iran is still keeping the uranium enrichments under 3. 6 , maximum level that would allow them to create nuclear weapons. Iran said they will soon break that threshold as well. They continue with provocative military action, directly and indirectly through the use of proxy. Today at the annual International Security forum, the chief of israels spy service reiterated Intelligence Service indicates iran is responsible for attacks this summer. Irans foreign pheuminister tal about the pressure during his remarks today. Translator only by illustrating authority to keep them in their place, negotiations are needed because we never accept to yield to pressure. But if someone respects us, we will give respect in return. Reporter with the stock pile limit breached, those tacts on oil tankers in the gulf and the shooting down of a u. S. Drone, it does appear as if iran is trying to position itself in a better place if talks do occur with the United States. This would give them more bargaining chips at the table. Dana thank you. Do you remember mayor pete . Hes raking in the campaign cash. How he built his fundraising machine. Plus 2020 democrats reacting to the president s meeting with kim jongun. Dana 2020 democrats dismissing the meeting between President Trump and north koreas leader kim jongun as a photo op with senator klobuchar saying that there is more to diplomacy and it is not as easy as bringing a hot dish to the fence to the dictator next door. He keeps having these summits and meetings that dont really produce anything. What this is about is making sure we have measurable results. We havent seen that. Dana karl rove, former White House Deputy chief of staff and fox news contributor. I know its a president ial campaign and these folks need to be out there fighting, but in some ways, even arguing about the president of the United States making an attempt to get talks back on track and criticizing that just a little desperate . Well, theyre being asked by the media, so they feel obje obligated to respond. In july of 2007 in a democratic debate, i think it was a cnn you tube debate, then senator barack obama was asked if he would meet with the leaders of iran, syria, venezuela, cuba and north korea without preconditions. He said, yes, absolutely, i would. Dana i remember that. I dont remember klobuchar, sanders and others on the stage back then criticizing president obama for doing what President Trump is doing. Dana but the republicans sure did. They did. Both parties hands are dirty. Republicans jumped, senator mccain, they jumped all over senator barack obama for saying that and democrats are jumping all over President Trump for doing it. We ought to just say this is political and not pay much attention to it. Dana there are other examples, but i do want to ask you about politics as well. We had the debate last week. Everybody knows senator Kamala Harris, raised 40 million, 60 were new donors, under 30 apiece. But mayor pete, Pete Buttigieg of south bend, indiana, raised about 24. 8 million in q2. He had kind of a rough week. Came after what happened in south bend indiana, with the death of the black american who was killed by a Police Officer and the body cam was off. Still an investigation on going. But maybe he didnt do as badly as people think in that debate. Well, look. I had an interesting conversation with Ron Brownstein about this. We got to talking about what are the memorable moments of the debate that seem to have made real impacts. Ronald reagan, i paid for this microphone. Walter mondale to gary hart, wheres the beef . President bushs response in the 2000 debate, who is your favorite philosopher . Jesus christ. They all happened when the people were getting ready to vote. Im not certain how much the impact of these debates will have in the outcome of the contest. I do think it will have an impact in the enthusiasm that people have for contributing. We live in a new world on which you can act on your enthusiasm by hitting the click button and contributing. I think were seeing that with Pete Buttigieg and Kamala Harris having good weeks. Whether this will be responsive over the long haul, we dont know. Dana anybody talking in aspen about this move to the left by the Democratic Party in these debates in particular on healthcare and immigration . Concerns that you heard . Well, i watched the debate with a group of attendees to the aspen idea festival. As you might expect, they werent exactly right of center, by and large. But even they showed, oh my god, look at that. Some of these conversations spun off into the ether, particularly some of the lesser by being as far left as they could. Theres a lot of angst. Im going to write about it this week. You look at the transcripts of those, of the debate, it is extreme rhetoric. Its only gonna, i think, get worse. Dana karl, i have to ask you, where are you spending 4th of july . Im spending the 4th of july taking my wife on a vacation to an undisclosed vacation. Her birthday comes three days after the 4th of july. We will be at a patriotic event someplace in the United States of america, but im not saying exactly where. Dana all right. I wish you a great one. Thanks for being on the show. Same to you. Dana violent protests breaking out in hong kong with thousands clashing with police, some even smashing their way into the Legislative Council building after ramming a glass door with a large met karlt. This comes amid growing unrest over the extradition bill and on the anniversary of the territorys return to chinese rule. Senior Foreign Affairs correspondent greg palkot has more for us. Reporter another day of amazing events, dana, in hong kong. Weve been tracking them all. It is late there now. Things seem to have calmed down. But they were anything but earlier in the day. As you noted, angry antigovernment protesters smashed their way literally into the citys main government building, parliament chamber. They were equipped with hard hats and gas masks. Once they got into that chamber, they started spraying graffiti, basically occupied the place. As we saw when we were in hong kong last week, they were well organized, using social media and other means to communicate and move forward. We also witnessed last week firsthand police showing restraint. In fact, the police let this whole thing happen for several hours. They were criticized last month for overreaction to a protest. Seems by about midnight, hong kong time, thats noon eastern time, the word went out from the police. They would disperse the crowds inside and outside the parliament. They used tear gas, batons. Not a lot of violence. Apparently the protesters scattered quickly. Now, the main event on this day should have been a pro democracy march which organizers claim numbered ab half a Million People in the streets. Again, one of the main things theyre concerned about, dana, is this proposed extradition law, which they fear could send some of their residents right into the suspect chinese justice system. The embattled hong kong chief executive, she appeared at a formal ceremony. This is also the anniversary of the handover from British Colonial rule to chinese rule back in 1997. She, herself, is being slammed by protesters for backing this and what they feel are other antidemocratic measures. She is being told that she must step down as well. So far, she aint budging. We heard finally, dana, from the National Security adviser, hes traveling in the region, speaking from mongolia. He said he hopes china obeys International Norms in dealing with this unrest in china. So far there seems to be restraint, at least on this day. Back to you. Dana thank you. For more on this, lets bring in bubba mcgurk. Knows about main stream china. Was there awhile. Lets show you this picture, the protesters, putting up the old colonial era flag. You have a good point though, as we were talking in the break, that a lot of the demonstrators werent even born then. Right. I was there during the handover. It was a very sad day. This is what people feared. For hong kong to prosper, all china needed was a light hand. But its treated these people like criminals and they are frustrated. Middle class and upper class people say to their children, go to school in america, canada, britt britain, australia. Lot of these people have no place to turn. The violence is really sad because it in no way help the democracy part. These are mostly peaceful people. This is just going to be used as a pretext by the government to crack down. Dana tell me about it. You were there for the wall street journal. The business side of things and how beijing realizes it does need hong kong to be strong. Thats one thing thats different in this. Even the business kphaourpbgt American Chamber of commerce, saeurious groups, have condemned this proposed extra diggs law. Its the end of hong kong if they can get you. You wake up and youre in a chinese courtroom. Even the threat allows corrupt chinese officials to threaten you and say youre going to be charged unless you pay me x. People understand the big threat of this. I think the great strength of the hong kong people is not so much the demonstration. That proves the frustration at the popular level. But i think china realizes this is going to be a word class global power, it needs a world classify nan financial city. They dont have the rule of law. They dont have respects for contracts. I think they are afraid of capital flight its causing. Would you invest in hong kong in the future . Would you hedge your bets . Dana do you think the United States should say or do anything more . We had this statement from john bolton saying it hopes china abides by International Norms. Theres a lot invested there. The consul in hong kong has been pretty good. China accuses us of interfering in their afairs. You cant ask for our investment and us to not have a say over what youre doing. This is totally unnecessary. Of course, its a crackdown on the tibetian, on tearing down christian churches. This is how Chinese Government communists treat chinese people. Dana one thing president xi wants more than anything is stability. He does not want to lose face. Are you concerned this could ratchet up even further . I think they have an easy way out. Shelf the walk. They keep maintaining the fiction that it was the chief executives idea to push this through. Get rid of her. They should have done it before. Becomes harder with the violence because then theyll look like theyre caving. They could easily blame it all on her and drop it, but china doesnt tend to do the easy thing. The wise thing. Dana if theres something hard, they will do it that way. Thank you so much. Thanks, dana. Dana a radical left protest turning violent while a journalist coming under attack. Cory said, this is not about a hoodie. Its about our culture seeing that as being wrong. Democrats wanted to defend Kamala Harris from a tweet where donald trump jr. Shared a users statement that the california senators ancestors are jamaican. Former Vice President biden tweeted this, same forces of hatred rooted in birthism that questioned Barack Obamas citizenship are now being used against senator Kamala Harris, suggesting that we have to call it out when we see it. Racism has no place in america. And thats bidens tweet defending Kamala Harris, days after harris questioned him about Race Relations at the debate. Dana great to have you back on the show. See you next time. More on this with the former dnc director and guy benson, host of the guy benson show. We dig in on this harris biden situation. Let me read to you from politico. The criticism of harris over her rough treatment of biden is among the first signs of backlash including in her home state against the california democrat. It is also a sign of good will and loyalty many still feel towards the Vice President who has managed to keep many of his backers in his camp even amid criticism of what was roundly viewed as a subpar debate performance. Mo, listen to Kamala Harris and get your take on it. I just felt the need to talk about it in a way that was not about not only in the context of just from academic discussion about who do you work with and, you know, but also just lets be really clear and remember what these guys were about. And the impact of their words and their work. Dana that sure was a moment. Five days later, were still talking about it. Yeah. Look, it was a really good moment for harris and a bad moment for biden. Theres the substance of it and then theres the Campaign Part of this. The substance of it, you know, racial issues are still raw for a lot of people across the country, particularly within the democratic primary electorate. And she, i think, found a way to, without sort of bringing a sledge hammer to him, really raise some questions about the way he had been talking somewhat nostalgically about the past. From a campaign perspective, i think there are a lot of people out there who say, do you know what . That may have been a cheap shot. There are a lot of people in the Democratic Party who would argue that joe biden is sympathetic to segregationists. But i think what struck a lot of people was how unable he was to effectively deal with it. He looked like he was reeling. And for a guy who sort of conventional wisdom is that he is the best person to go toe to toe with donald trump, if hes gonna get rattled by this issue in a democratic debate, it raised questions about whether or not he actually is ready to go toe to toe with donald trump. Dana josh kroshire wrote, a biden collapse would create a small opening for the two pragmatic senators, Amy Klobuchar and michael bennett, who impressed on the debate stage. Both have track records of winning over republicans in swing states. Do you think that joe biden is close to collapse . No. I think its way premature to be talking about a collapse. I dont think he had a good debate. I do wonder if Kamala Harris may have climbed on a limb on the issue ofment dated School Bussing for example that may not go over well with the general electorate. I think biden may have the better political stance on that particular issue, but mo used the word sledge hammer. I dont think she used that kind of tool to hammer him, but it looked, his reaction was as if he had been hit by Something Really hard, really unexpectedly. Thats on him, right . I think she found an opening. She decided she was gonna come after him pretty hard. And then its up to the candidate to assert their front runner status. Dana its interesting to listen to the criticism of her because did she come after him too hard . For me, i think that i saw one of her spokes people Say Something along the lines of, mo, she was ready, she was bold and she delivered. I mean, is this the kind of breakout thing that you would look to try to have in a primary, if theres nine debates to go before the first votes in iowa. She got momentum out of this and i think deservedly so. I think so, too. The post debate polls reflect that. That the only phoefrbment we have seen coming out of this debate was downward movement for biden and upward movement for harris. This has been a race thats been remarkably static since the day biden got into the race. This was maybe the first potentially Game Changing moment. We all need to remember though, in the first president ial debate back in 2012, barack obama got his clock cleaned by mitt romney. Everyone said, romney crushed him in that first debate. He came back strong in the second and third debates and won the election. Conventional wisdom was that Hillary Clinton beat donald trump in every debate last time. So how much of a game changer it is remains a question. But i do think for the first time biden looks vulnerable. Dana, a very quick. Here. I have seen some of this commentary like, oh, it was bad form for harris to come after biden this hard. Thats total nonsense. The democrats had a front runner last time they core nated early on and that ended up badly for the presidency in 2016. If hes going to be the front runner, he has to be able to be nimble and responsive to tough attacks. And well see if he shapes up for the next debate better. He did not seem terribly well prepared last time. Dana the next round of debates will be the end of this month, july. What do you think about the format . Would you suggest they change anything, narrow it down even further or just let it rip the way it is . Look, im a little scarred by my own experience when i was at the dnc helping negotiate some of these debates. This is an unwinnable situation for the Democratic Party in the sense that, someones going to be upset no matter how you do it. The way this dnc has handled it, theyve handled it really well. Theyre going to do this exact threshold one more time. Then beginning to get the purge out in early september. Thats when its really gonna start to matter. Dana rest of the world wonders why we have campaigns that last for two years. Were having so much fun. Its a blast. Dana happy 4th to you. Prosecution now in the middle of the closing arguments in the war crimes trial of navy seal eddie gallagher. He is accused of killing a wounded isis prisoner in iraq two years ago. Jonathan hunt has been following this for us. Hes in san diego now. Jonathan. Reporter arriving in court this morning chief edward gallagher, seemed out wardly at least as calm as ever. As we get close, how nervous are you . Not nervous at all. Reporter now, his defense team, too, express dz confidence that gallagher will be found not guilty on all charges. The prosecution is delivering its closing argument. Again, bringing up the photographs gallagher took posing with the body of the dead isis fighter. The testimony of the two seals said they saw chief gallagher stab the fighter and a series of texts gallagher sent to a friend. Prosecutors putting them up on a large screen for the jury, including one which read, quote, cold story behind this, got him with my hunting knife. Putting the photos up on the big screen, too. Prosecution summed up its case by saying, quote, the government evidence is chief gallaghers words, chief gallaghers pictures, chief gallaghers stills. Now, the defense argument has always been this was a case concocted by a small group of seals driven by personal animosity toward gallagher. A theory bolstered by one of their final witnesses. Gallaghers boss who said on the stand some guys, quote, just didnt like eddie gallagher. Lieutenant commander bryce also testified no one told him about claim of murder for months after seal team 7 returned from iraq, despite being given many chances to do so in interviews. Now, the jury, dana, may be asked to begin deliberations this afternoon. They will be considering seven charges in all. They range from the murder of that isis fighter. Certainly a charge that is difficult to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, given that there is no body, there is no autopsy. There is a separate confession from another seal on the stand who said he, not gallagher, actually committed the murder. He was testifying under immunity. Then you go all the way down to the lesser charges. The most likely of which is essentially a charge of conduct unbecoming. Those photographs in which gallagher poses with the body of the dead isis fighter. Those photos do exist. We have seen them. The jury of seven military men have seen them. That would appear to be where chief gallagher faces the greatest jeopardy in terms of conviction. Dana . Dana Jonathan Hunt in san diego for us, thank you.
