Phone call with russian president putin. Reporter julie, good afternoon. According to white house officials, it is the first time in a long time that President Trump has spoke within the russian president vladamir putin. The phone call last little more than an hour, the president tweeting saying, quote, we had a long conversation with president putin as i have always said long before the witch hunt started, getting along with russia, china and everyone is a good thing, not bad thing. We discussed trade, nuclear, venezuela, even the russian hoax. Very productive talk. According to mike pompeo, russia played a big role in thwarting the uprising in venezuela this week. Nicholas maduro was set to get on a plane to go to cuba, but was talked out of it by russia. They did talk about whats going on in the country. Listen to sara sanders here. The president s primary focus throughout the call was ab helping the people of venezuela, making clear that the United States stands with the people of venezuela and the importance of making sure those individuals are able to get the food and the ware and the medical supplies needed. The president reiterated that sentiment several times throughout the call. Reporter on arms control, President Trump putin talked about the possibility of extending Current Nuclear agreements between the two countries and possibly negotiating a new deal that would negotiate the u. S. , russia and china, might be in the form of a new start agreement. The two leaders also talked about putins recent summit with north Korean Leader kim jongun and how to try to move the ball forward on north korea. Listen here. They spoke about north korea for a good bit of time on the call and reiterated the commitment and the need for denuclearization and the president said several times on this front as well the need and importance of russia stepping up and continuing to help and put pressure on north korea to denuclearize. Reporter no word of a possible trump putin summit in the works but the two will be together in the same city at the end of june. They will be at the g20 in osaka, japan. Certainly there will be plenty of opportunity during that time for the two of them to get together if they want to. Julie well have to wait and see. Youll be all over it. Thank you very much. House democrats putting a new offer on the table, this time sending a letter to attorney general barr, pushing for mediate full access, not partial, but full access to the Mueller Report. Talks are under way for mueller himself to appear before the House Judiciary Committee. Thats the same panel where barr was a no show yesterday. Catherine herridge is live in washington with more. Reporter julie, those familiar with the talks tell fox news democrats on the House Judiciary Committee are in negotiations with Robert Mueller to testify before their panel. They expect mueller will agree to appear. Justice department declined to comment on a letter from the same House Committee effectively placing a counter offer on the table for full access to the russia report. In recent Days Department officials emphasized the Mueller Report contains grand jury information that cannot be shared by the attorney general based on the law without a court order. They question whether House Democrats are asking in good faith because barr gave them a less redacted version of the Mueller Report and many refused to review it. On this issue of testimony including white house counsel, the president told fox today thats apparently off the table as far as other witnesses. Are you saying the House Committee should be satisfied with the findings in the Mueller Report and not do eupindependen . I think they should be satisfied with the finding. They spent 35 million on the Mueller Report. I just want to be clear on don mcgann. Under what circumstances would you allow him to testify to congress about the special counsel investigation . Well, i have had him testifying already for 30 years. Is the answer no . I dont think i can let him and then tell everyone else you cant. They testified for many hours. All of them. As far as youre concerned, its done. Is it done . I would say its done. Weve been through this. Nobody has ever done what i tell them. I have given total transparency. Its never happened before like this. Reporter we all asked the president whether the attorney general, william barr, should have volunteered during his april testimony that he had received a letter from the special counsel, Robert Mueller, and that mueller had concerns about barrs initial letter of notification to congress because mueller, pardon me, tells it lacked context. The four page letter was followed by 400 some odd pages shortly there after with very little redaction. He was very open. He was very transparent. We could have redacted 90 of it. We didnt have to give it at all. It was my prerogative. I didnt have to give that 400page document at all. I could have held it back. In fact, Rod Rosenstein, i believe, Rod Rosenstein wanted to hold it back, others wanted to hold it back. People said, you dont really have to give it at all. Reporter first indicators weve had that there was a genuine debate within the Justice Department based on the president s recollection about how much of that report to release to congress and its important to remind people at home tpwhaeused on the regulations, really, the attorney general had a very limited lane that he had to provide the information, which seems he did. The 400 pages went beyond that. Julie. Julie very interesting. Really good interview. Thank you very much. As all of this plays out, nancy pelosi talking about the possibility of launching impeachment proceedings. Heres what she said. This is about our constitution. Weve talked about the separation of power. Thats a discussion that we have a responsibility to have because we take an oath to protect the constitution. But how it relates to people is sabt our elections and central to our democracy are our elections. Julie all right. Elana treen and melanie zanono joining me. Elana, Speaker Pelosi said the attorney general of the United States of america about whether Robert Muellers team thought there was any if there was any problem with the report that he put out, the four page summary of the Mueller Report. And he kind of indicated that, no, he didnt see issues on the special counsels team, any opinions. But then, of course, he saw this hrer come out last week, or earlier this week, that showed perhaps Robert Mueller did take issue with that, with that summary. And so a lot of eyes are going to be on what attorney general william barr does moving forward. We see chairman nadler asking for the full report, unredacted. Well see more insight moving forward. Julie i want to ask you about William BarrsCongress Comments last month. He told congress he thought lying did occur and thats what ignited this whole controversy. From there on, the democrats were fearious, no matter what he came out with in his letter. He said that the question is whether it was adequately predicated. Im not suggesting that it wasnt adequately predicated, but i need to explore that. What will barrs exploring entail and who will hold those in contempt if spying did occur . There are a couple things going on. You have the Inspector General to the doj conducting an investigation looking at the fbi surveillance mechanisms, seeing whether they were improper or just tpaoeued. Theyre looking at whether these use of confidential informants was justified and also looking at the fbis issue of fisa warrants to surveil President Trumps campaign. They also have congress. They can hold the doj accountable. Republicans control the senate. Senate judiciary chairman Lindsey Graham said he is also going to look into this. This is something republicans have said more and more. We need to investigate the investigators. Theyre trying to turn the table. I really will see you see this as a counter programming. Julie i want to move to a report in the new york time. According to the paper, the fbi sent an under cover agent to meet with george popadopolos to find out whether the campaign was working with moscow. Popadopolos explains the alleged encounter. Very flirty and was trying to do two thing. One extract information about my professional connections in the middle east and two, to see if i had any information that she could potentially extract from me about trump and russia which is nonsense. Now, of course the New York Times reported that she was some sort of agent but i dont think she was fbi. I think she was cia. Julie so there you go. Popadopolos, by the way, with this meeting, it was with a woman at her request. She teched him saying lets meet at bar in london in 2016. The reason for that meeting was supposed to be they were going to discuss Foreign Policy issues. Then out of nowhere she asked point blank was the trump Campaign Working with russia. The woman was a government investigator posing as a research assistant. How is that not entrapment . Well, i can speak to the legal terms of that, but i will say that this adds more ammunition to what the president and republicans have been saying for several months, even years now. Theyve been questioning why this russia investigate staeurgation started in the first place and any sorted of collusion between the Trump Campaign and russia. We should look at whats gonna move us forward from here. A lot of republicans want an investigation to the beginning and origins of the russia investigation. This will be the latest thing theyll use to further that. We shouldnt expect them to back down especially when a Republican Controlled Senate and republican president. Julie all right, alayna, we appreciate you coming on. We head to the southern border. How agents are dealing with the rise in migrants coming to america. And an update on one journey that took a tragic turn. Plus, what the pentagon is saying about the growing military threats posed by china. Hi im joan lunden. Todays Senior Living communities have never been better, with amazing amenities like movie theaters, exercise rooms and swimming pools, public cafes, bars and bistros even pet care services. And theres never been an easier way to get great advice. A place for mom is a free service that pairs you with a local advisor to help you sort through your options and find a perfect place. A place for mom. You know your family we know Senior Living. Together well make the right choice. Julie president now wrapping up talks with the slovak Prime Minister there, now taking questions from reporters. Lets listen. Over an hour. We talked about many thing. Venezuela was one of the topics. And he is not looking at all to get involved in venezuela, other than hed like to see something positive happen for venezuela. And i feel the same way. We want to get some humanitarian aid. Right now people are starving. They have no water. They have no food. This is a Prime Minister, one of the richest countries in the world 20 years ago and now they dont have food and water for their people. So we want to help on a humanitarian basis. I thought it was a very positive conversation i had with President Trump putin on venezuela. Are you talking about extending the new treaty . Were talking about a Nuclear Agreement where we make less and they make less. And maybe where we even get rid of some of the tremendous fire power that we have right now. Were spending billions on nuclear weapons, numbers like weve never spent before. We need that. And they are also china is frankly, also we discussed the possibility of a three way deal instead of a twoway deal. China, i have already spoken to them. They would very much like to be part of that deal. In fact, during the trade talks we started talking about that. They were excited about that. Maybe even more excited about that than trade. But they felt very strongly about that. So i think were gonna probably start up something very shortly, between russia and ourselves to start off, and i think china will be added down the road. Well be talking about nonproliferation. Well be talking about a nuclear deal of some kind. I think it will be a very comprehensive one. Did you ask about the meddling issues that came up in the Mueller Report today . We discussed it. He sort of smiled when he said something to the effect that, it started off as a mountain and ended up being a mouse. But he knew that because he knew there was no collusion whatsoever. Pretty much thats what it was. Did you tell him not to meddle in the next election . Excuse me. Im answering this question. You are very rude. So we had a good conversation about many different things. Okay . Did you ask him not to meddle in the next election . We didnt discuss that. We discussed five or six things. We also went into great detail on various things, especially, i would say, nuclear, maybe venezuela. We talked about north korea at great length. Pretty much thats it. Also discussed trade. We intend to do a lot of trade with russia. We do some right now. Its up a little bit. Hed like to do trade and wed like to do trade. Getting along with russia and china is a good thing. Not bad thing. Its a positive thing. Getting along with other countries, including your country, by the way. Getting along with countries is a good thing. We want to have Good Relationships with every country. [ inaudible question ] i dont know. Thats up to our attorney general, who i think has done a fantastic job. Go ahead. Yes, please. Id like to. I know people from slovakia. Theyre incredible people. Its a beautiful country and its doing very well. [ inaudible question ] well, the tariffs have been a necessary thing for me to do because in the case of the European Union, they have not treated us right. Were losing 181 billion a year. We have been for many year. The European Union has not treated us properly. But well see what happens with tariffs on cars and the European Union. We havent made a decision on that. [ inaudible question ] it will be discussed next week. Say it again. [ inaudible ] well, i think i have a very Good Relationship with some of the press. Unfortunately some of the press doesnt cover me accurately. In fact, they go out of their way to cover me inaccurately, so i dont think thats a free press. I think thats a dishonest press. I want to see a free press. I was happy to see on the front of the New York Times for the first time where they were talking about spying and spying on my campaign. Thats a big difference between the way theyve been covering. Thats a story bigger than watergate, as far as im concerned. So i want to see freedom of the press and i get treated fairly by some press, but i get treated very unfairly by other press. Frankly, i think thats very dishonest. I dont care that, when you have stories purposely written badly, much on purpose, thats not free press. Thats the opposite of free press. Did you decide whether you would vote on the border . That will be determined in the next few weeks. Theres been no president in s history that has given what i have given just in terms of a total witch hunt. I called it the russian hoax. Turned out to be. No collusion, no obstruction. It was a total hoax. Yet i was transparent. We gave 1. 4 documents. We gave hundreds of people. I let him interview the white house lawyer for 30 hours. Think of that. 30 hour. I let him interview other people. I didnt have to let him interview anybody. I didnt have to give any documents. I was totally transparent because i knew i did nothing wrong. It turned out i did nothing wrong. No collusion with russia. Think of it. 35 million they spent. They wasted. Over a period of two years. No collusion. No obstruction. Thank you all very much. I appreciate it. Thank you. Thank you. [ talking at the same time ] julie all right. Want to bring back in melanie zanona. He had just had a meeting with the slovak Prime Minister and it became all about putin. He had a Video Conference at some point with the russian president. What did you make of the exchange . Seems like it was light hearted. He once again brought up the fact that there was no proof of russian collusion, which is something he and putin seem to enjoy talking about. Yeah. The president seems like he was in a good mood. After this week, he is feeling a little bit more confident about the fact was not only there was no collusion found, but there was a New York Times report that refortifies the gops argument that there was spying on the Trump Campaign. You did see him rip a little on the press and fake news media, but did say the New York Times got it right, it was on the front page. I think you will continue to hear him really bang that drum, along with the gop, as they ramp up their own investigation. Julie his comments about addressing the whole russia collusion and the investigation. Talked about how we addressed that. Started as a mountain and wound up being a mouse. That was a quote from vladamir putin. It will be interesting if these two do meet in the future. One reporter asked if he asked putin not to meddle. At that point the president did not appreciate that comment and called that reporter rude. But moving forward, i suppose relations with russia, how does this maybe switch gears a bit . Well, going forward, we are going to have to deal with russia. The president also talked to putin about venezuela. Theres a crisis right now the administration is trying to deal with. There have been reports that it was russia who encouraged maduro not to get on a plane, something he denied. Putin told the president he does not want to get involved. Now the investigation has to figure out what to do in venezuela. One thing the administration has threatened was to ramp up santions and action with cuba as a way to punish them for not getting involved and stopping venezuela. So well have to wait and see what the administration decides there. Julie they all talked about trade. The economy, jobs numbers out are very good, but there is an understanding that the trade tariffs could be making things a little bit on shaky ground here in the United States. Thats something the president takes very seriously. What did you get out of that . Absolutely. Just yesterday, he had a meeting with republican senators who told him they need to drop these tariffs on our allies or they are not going to support his new trade deal. He tweeted after the meeting, tariffs are working, economy is booming. So there are no signs that he is going to back down. It is an open question about republicans and his own Party Support this trade deal with nancy pelosi and the democrats have also pushed back on for different reasons. They want more environmental protections, enforcement mechanisms. This is a chief priority for the president. He wants to get this through. Obviously its a sensitive subject if he doesnt. Julie melanie, thank you very much for sticking down for us and breaking this down for us. Thank you. Julie a new migrant shelter opens in el paso, texas. It has 500 beds. Border patrol agents say it is far from enough. Casey stegal is there to explain. Reporter department of Homeland Security said the new ten cities cost about 35 million to build and to maintain and they are set to remain open through the end of the year. Now, there are two locations. One is in el paso, which is video youre seeing now. It was built in a single day. Another established in donna, texas, which is in the Rio Grande Valley on the opposite end of the state. Feds said they simply started running out of places to house people in these areas in a humane way. These locations are designed to ease that as these migrants have to wait for long periods of time to have their asylum claims processed and criminal background checks processed. There are 500 people. Theres laundry facility in there. Theres snacks. Theres a Recreational Area on the outside. So it will make this process flow a little bit smoother than it has been flowing. Reporter however, even with these new places coming online, the system is still swamped. Those on the ground they it is because the flow of migrants has not slowed. Border patrol agents say they apprehend 2,000 people along the entire southwest border every single day, 2,000 a day, julie. Julie were learning more about an attempted journey at the border. Sad story. Reporter a 10monthold boy died yesterday in eagle pass texas, drowned after a raft that he was on capsized in the Rio Grande River and it sent nine people total into the water. Border patrol agents jumped in and were able to rescue some. The 10monthold did not make it. Three people are still missing. Sadly, were told that this is a pretty common occurrence down there. Weve seen it ourselves covering it down there. The river itself is the international boundary. One side is mexico, the other side is the u. S. Its narrow. You can walk across in some places. And so all day long, all night long, they load migrants up on these make shift rafts and literally ferry them across the river back and forth bringing people over into the United States so they can claim asylum. Julie tragic. All right, casey stegall, thank you. A billionaire drug executive found guilty of racketeering in a massive conspiracy, bribing doctors to prescribe an addictive and often deadly drug and getting Insurance Companies to pay for all that. Tell us about this. This is a big deal. This is the first time you have a founder ceo that is held accountable for contributing to the opioid crisis. What we know just in 2017, we had 016, i should say. 47,000 were linked to an opioid. You have synthetic opioids, fentanyl. This was the case with this company. They pretty much instilled a nationwide scheme. They found doctors to prescribe opioid. They pushed them to prescribe stronger opioids. They gave them kick backes, created fake education talk with these doctors. They even created call centers to scam Insurance Companies. To take it one step further they made a rap video. They have a rap video that hopefully we can show you trying to rally the sales team up to get these doctors to prescribe opioids. There you have it. There will be a drug character come up in this rap video. There are things that came out in this trial. They hired an exotic dancer to convince a doctor to prescribe opioids. She was also convicted as well. You have the ceo of the company as well as four other executives. The hope is you start with these companies. Julie that is sick. Thank you very much. So, stale mate in venezuela after days of protests. Now the commander of u. S. Forces in south america briefing the white house. Were live on the ground in caracas. Well have complete coverage next. For years ive trained dogs for the marines like me, some of these dogs have seen many tours of duty. And for the past 15 years ive been a navy federal member. Nice to talk about good news once awhile, right . You think about all of the news this week. Buried in the middle of it was good economic news. Julie what do you attribute it to . I would say tax reform, deregulation. But you have to be patient with economic data. You really have to be patient. Lot of times the media overreacts to one number on one given day. When you look at it over time the story is really compelling. We had great gdp number last friday. This friday we had a grated jobs number. You can parse through it and find some bad news, but the economy is firing on almost every cylinder. Julie got april jobs reports exceeding expectations. You also have the naysayers. Wondering if these positive numbers will quell those who have an ability to find the negative in it all. The glass is always half full. If youre an investor, and a contrarian, youll find good reasons to be negative that way. If youre political and a naysayer, i think you have completely different motivations. Sometimes the facts dont matter. Julie i dont want to be a debbie downer, but i have to be. Not every industry is booming. We do have to point that out. Some industries that arent faring so well, the trucking industry. Tell us whats going on with the trucking industry. Whats interesting, disruption down the road, no pun intended with trucking, because of autonomous vehicles. But theyre not here yet. One of their biggest problems is they cant find drivers. I just drove back and forth this week from michigan. I dont know that ill ever do that again. I saw nothing but trucks. When i went to truck stops to get gas, i saw lot of help wanted signs. One of the challenges in that industry is they cant find drivers. Julie there are people getting jobs but for whatever reason they are not getting trucking jobs. Why the decrease in that . Whats interesting, its just like construction. So before the financial crisis, we were creating a lot of construction job. We lost them. Were not creating construction jobs like we were. Thats work a lot of people dont want to do any more. Julie were not losing our jobs because of robots taking over but there is concern over that. Its apparently taking some jobs in lower class communities. Why is that . And do you think we do need to be worried about robots ruling the world . 36 of u. S. Employment will experience some exposure to automation by 2030. Whats interesting about technology disrupting the work force, if you look at the 80s, the biggest disrupter, the copy machine, fax machine, email. Think about big secretary pools that existed in the 50s that dont exist any more. Our economy is very resilient and used to that kind of disruption. But what you find over time is those jobs get replaced. Someone has to program the robot. Someone has to check the robot. Also have the service economy. Service economies require human interaction, so im not waving the flags that were all going to be replaced by robot. I have seen the robot news anchor and he was terrible so im not worried about you losing your job. Julie lower wage worker, how are they doing . Pretty well. Theres a broader view of employment. What we saw was people that werent, didnt finish high school. Big view of the unemployment rate. That one was flat. Didnt change. Which is a good sign also. So, i think what youre seeing is the broad view of employment still remains very strong. Julie all right. Thats always good news to end on a friday. Right . Great news for a friday. Julie thank you so much. Mitchell. Dont think im your principal. Thats right. Julie now a look at other stories. The plan who attempted to plot a subway bombing in new york city will soon walk free. Vice president mike pence saying all options are on the table concerning the volatile situation in venezuela. Both sides seem to be settling in for conflict over the haul. We look at the growing humanitarian crisis. We begin with Steve Harrigan in caracas. Hi, steve. Reporter julie, a meeting at the pentagon this morning very high level discuss military options in venezuela. The meeting included secretary of state, National Security adviser, act defense minister as well. They spoke in the tank, severe room in the pentagon, military have continued to stress that all options are open for possible action in venezuela. Mean time here during the week of protests, more than 200 people have been injured on the ground. At least four people killed. Some speaking about their experiences. The great risk they go through to come out on the streets day after day. Heres what they had to say, including a father who lost his son. My son didnt last. After the shot he was taken to medics but without vital signs. Translator all the adrenaline, i went running. I was shot in the arm and back and once in the leg. I lost sensation in my body. I was on the ground. When i was on the ground, the officers started to shoot. Reporter despite the risk, despite that sacrifice, the opposition is calling for protesters to come back out on the streets to keep the pressure on the maduro government. Back to you. Julie thank you very much. For a look at the humanitarian impact, lets go to ellison barber near the venezuela border. Hi, ellison. Reporter yes. This is a neighborhood where a lot of people who have come over from venezuela into columbia where they wind up staying. Above us is a bridge that many migrants use to cross into venezuela legally. The columbian government, they let them cross here because they know the venezuelans do not have food or medicine that they need back home. Weve spoken to people who say they walked hours to come here just to get food. For the most part it has been busy here but relatively calm. Yesterday we were able to go back into this neighborhood and furthereder into the trenches where so many migrants cross illegally. We heard three gunshots, but thaf it. For the most part things were relatively calm, felt relatively safe. An hour ago shots started in this area. Many of them, lot of gun fire. We saw people here and up above. I have to stop talking for a minute so you can hear and also see what we and everyone saw not long ago. So many venezuela migrants live, children, elderly people, everyone was represented here. And for a moment, they all did the exact same thing. They ran screaming clearly in fear for their lives. Nearly 400 rounds went off. Some migrants told us they thought some people might be dead. We have not been able to confirm that. Beear told the gun fire we heard was from a group of militants. Its been described to us as gang like militia. On to the venezuela side who supports the maduro regime. They are people that were previously in jail and have taken up arms against antigovernment protesters. On this side, this is where people are crossing legally in these wood areas are the trenches. On the other side of venezuela, they charge people a lot of money to come into columbia illegally. They control that area. For whatever reason, they started firing. We heard 30 minutes of heavy gun fire. Police shot back. For the first time in years, this bridge was closed all the way back almost to, you can see a blue sign where it says welcome to columbia. Thats the first time its happened in a long time. This bridge, all these people you can see, they are here even though at times it may not be safe because they have no other choice. They have no work, no food, no medicine. We spoke to one whom who said she walks an hour and a half each way once a month to come to columbia because her mother is diabetic and she needs insulin to live and that she can only get it here. Julie great story telling. We are on royal baby watch. Meghan markle is expected to give birth any day. The royal family has remained quiet about details per their wishes. Bucking ham palace did just make a rare statement. Jonathan hunt is following this from our west coast news room. I still question your british heritage. I think that passports fake. But whatever, jonathan, take it away. Reporter everyone questions my heritage. Theres no baby yet. At least we dont think so. Frankly, we dont know. Reporter we have no clue if its a boy or girl. Meghan said there will not be anything on the steps of a hospital or wherever. Bottom line, the baby could be here. It might be born in an hour. It might be born in three days. The british media on red alert. They breathlessly reported yesterday that an ambulance was arriving at Windsor Castle. Windsor castle is the estate on which their Frogmore Cottage sits. We do know the queens at Windsor Castle today. Could that be a sign . Maybe. Maybe not. We do not know. Big question, is it going to be a boy or girl . We dont know that either. There is betting on all of this. Girls name. Top one wont surprise you, diana is the favorite. Followed by alegra, grace and alice. If its a boy, arthur followed by james, albert and edward. No charles or phillip on that list from the William Hills book makers which is interesting given harrys father and grandfather respectively. All fox news watchers know the last word in all royal reporting julie is my mum in england. If you want to bet its going to be a girl according to mom and will be called diana. Take that to the bank.
