Political thing because this was one of the big things i said were going to do tax cuts, were going to do weve done most of what we said. One of the a lot of news back there. One of the folks back there said that hes actually done more than he promised. Its true. I have done more than i promised. Weve done a lot, even with the veterans. A lot of veterans in louisiana. [applause] we got veterans choice. We got veterans choice approved, which is pretty amazing. Theyve been trying to get that for years and years. Decades and decades. We got accountability. When you had somebody treating our veterans horribly, you couldnt do anything. You couldnt fire them. Whether its unions or whether its Civil Service or whatever it may have been. But for decades and decades, somebody could do anything they wanted. They can steal, they could have abuse our veterans, do whatever they want and you couldnt fire them. I got accountability approved. Everybody said you couldnt get that. We got it done and now we can say jim, youre fired. Get out of here. We dont want you taking care of our veterans. A big thing. A lot of help from those people. [applause] we got a lot done. They view the wall as being a big item that if i dont do it, its a negative. Im not doing it for that reason. Im doing it because we have to do it. Its common sense. We have to do it. If you look at the caravans coming up, if you look at whats going on, you take a look. If we didnt have some of those walls, the military has been incredible. They came up and built barriers. They kept thousands and thousands of people from overrunning various sections of our country. Weve done a great job. But we need that extra we need that barrier. You cant do this. You can have all the people you want dressed in military, you can have ice, you can have Border Patrol. If you dont have the barrier, theres not a thing you can do. They all say we like technology. I like technology, too. We can have all the drones in the world flying around. We can have all the sensors in the world. If you dont have a strong steel or concrete barrier, theres no way youll stop these people from rushing. Last week and we have no idea who they are. Im sure you have good ones, but you have bad ones. Last week i traveled to maccallum, texas to meet with Border Patrol. These great patriots made clear what they need from congress and to end this terrible crisis. We will end it. We will end it. When we have proper security, people wont come except for the people that we want to come because we want to take people in to help our farmers, et cetera. Were going to make that easier for them, to help the farmers. You need these people. [applause] no, you need these people. Make it easier. Im glad i told you that. Look, youre in that business. A lot of people dont understand this. You need people to help you with the farms. Im not going to rule that out. Im going to make that easier for them to come in and work the farms. Youve had some people for 20, 25 years that are incredible. They go home and cant get back in. Thats not going to happen. Were keeping the wrong ones out, okay . We dont want the wrong ones coming in. For that, its going to be almost impossible to get in. For the people that work the farms and that have been here, gone through this very short but good process that will help our country, its going to be easier for them to get in than what they have to go through now. So just remember that. [applause] i know a lot about the farming world. If i dont, sonny teaches me. [applause] they explain that theres no substitute for wall. These are the ice people and the Border Patrol people or a physical barrier. Theres no substitute. Where a barrier exist, illegal crossings plummet dramatically. In el paso, they had one of the most dangerous cities in the country. A wall was put up. It went from being one of the most dangerous cities in the country to one of the most safest in the country overnight. Overnight. Does that tell you something . I can give you many examples of that. [applause] they say its medieval, a wall. So is a wheel. Every time i look out, they all have wheels. They may have gone electric and done Different Things but every car ive seen has wheels. Wheels work and walls work. You know, theres some things you cant beat. [applause] thats why weve asked congress to fund a steel barrier or whatever you want to call it. This barrier will stop illegal activity while directing lawful trade, travel and commerce to our ports of entry. These ports are americas doors. Doors only work when you have strength. We need strength. Right now we have weakness. Theyre forming a new caravan in honduras. Honduras is not helping us. They could stop it. We send them hundreds of millions of dollars a year, el salvador, honduras and other places. Guatemala. Hundreds of millions. But they dont help us like so many nations. We help them, they dont help us. We dont even get their votes often when we need them in the united nations. Why . Because the wrong people are asking them. So those days are over. I said before i came, were looking at a whole plan. Why are we sending them money if theyre allowing caravans to form in the middle of their cities . Why are we sending them [applause] a lot of changes have been made in this country in less than two years. Ill tell you that. Really good changes. Changes with people like you can common sense and smarts fully understand. Thats why were liking where we are and the country is changing rapidly for the better. As part of our overall security plan, we have also asked congress to approve cuttingedge technology to detect drugs. Incredible technology today. When these cars do come in through the ports of entry, you have technology that is so incredible. We dont use it. We dont have it because the leaders decided not to spend the money. You make it back every month probably more than that. The drugs coming through the southern border are destroying the fabric of our country. Its so bad. Its so bad. [applause] we have to stop it. This technology is incredible. To fund more agents, were putting that high on the list. Officers, beds. Believe it or not, were one of the only countries i say one. Every time i Say Something else, theyll say that there was a country that did it. Somebody comes into our country, they touch one foot on the ground, we have to catch them. Its called catch. We take their names and we bring them to a court. Can you believe this . We release them. Were trying to do catch and hold. Catch and not release. You have to release. So we release. They go into our country and then you announce these are the laws. Then you say come back in three years for your trial. Tell me, what percentage of people come back . Would you say 100 . Youre off. How about 2 . Those people you almost dont want because they cannot be very smart. 2 . 2 come back. [laughter] those 2 wont make America Great again. [ laughter and applause ] crazy dana youve been watching President Trump. Hes wrapping his speech at the American Farm Bureau Annual convention in new orleans. Hello. Im dana perino. This is the daily briefing. Lets bring in chris stirewalt, editor and co host of the ill tell you what podcast. You listened to this speech. Ill play you one bit where he talks about the wall and shut down thing from the democrats perspective. This is what he thinks. Listen to this. When it comes to keeping the American People safe, i will never ever back down. I didnt need this fight. This is a rough fight. Were dealing against people that think that if they can stop me from building the wall, again, weve done a lot of work, but they think thats a good thing for 2020. Theyre not going to win. They think if they can stop me from building the wall, thats good. This is the reason why they dont want the wall built. Dana chris, so were entering the fourth week of the shut down. Everyone comes back from the weekend. Maybe rested, hopefully cleareyed and looking at this. Does that ring true to you in terms of what the democrats are thinking right now . Both the democrats and donald trump are obsessed with the 2020 election. We, the people of these united states, will be made to suffer through a lot of degradations, this and worse in the months to come as these two parties engage in a level of idicroc a y. Its about 2020 for trump and 2020 for the dems. He believes clearly he basically says as much as that he feels like if he can win here and he can whatever its impossible to say what victory looks like at this point, but if he can win here and is ajudged to be the winner, then hes on track for 2020 reelection. If he fails somehow, that his base will abandon him and the relatively small number of people that are staying with him through this process will leave him and he will be alone. Hes probably right about him. Hes in a corner that way. Dana listen to what senator graham said on fox news sunday. We have more on how the president reacted to that. We dont have that . Sorry. Basically senator graham said that he would urge the president to open the government for a short period of time, three weeks, see if he can get a deal. At the end of three weeks, all bets are off. See if he can do it through emergency power. The president this morning before he left for new orleans said im not going to do that. So at this point, chris, where do you think we are in terms of getting this resolved . The consequences are piling up now. Its getting worse. This stupid political fight where democrats nancy pelosi said she would give him 1 more in funding. The president responded by increasing his demand to 5. 7 billion. Were not talking about a lot of money by the standards of the federal government. How do you get out of that . I cant tell you. I can tell you this. Polls are out today after a long hiatus and theyre coming fast and furious. We have polls from quinnipiac, the washing to be post. The president is ajudged as the one to blame here. The pressure will grow. Dana i felt like the president made news or more open to something and then he gets cheered by the farmer theres at the meeting. Take a listen to what he said about temporary workers. No, you need these people. It would make it easier. [cheers applause] i mean, im glad i told you that. Youre in that business. A lot of people dont understand this. You need people to help you with the farms. Im not going to rule that out. Im going to make that easier for them to come in and work the farms. Youve had some people for 20, 25 years that are incredible. They go home and cant get back in. That wont happen. Dana the president has talked about this. Maybe he felt this way. To me that shows a little willingness to help the Farming Community and something id imagine that democrats ought to start taking him up on these offers. One of the reasons that we have such an absurd immigration regime in the united states, the folks the president was talking to, theyre a big part of why things are as bad as they are. Remember, the incentive for big business and that includes big agriculture has been a lot of cheap Foreign Workers to bring through on a seasonal basis, lots and lots of cheap Foreign Workers. A decade ago when there was an effort to do comprehensive immigration reform, that was a concern. Thats one of the reasons it got submarined. So we have a perverse set of incentives here. If he can convince big business that he will take care of them and provide the cheap workers that they want, then maybe there will be fewer obstacles to big reform in the end. Dana seems to me theres a deal to be made here. Well see if they make that before the end of the week. Happy monday, chris. Happy monday. You bet. Dana up next, ill speak to the sheriff of the county with the longest span of the border about his reality when it comes to Border Security. Our big idaho potato truck is out there somewhere and were going to find it. Awe man. Always look for the grown in idaho seal. Ways metal vibration therapy. And visit coolsculpting. Com today for your chance to win a free treatment. Can. Dana mexican authorities finding a drug smuggling tunnel crossing underneath the border in arizona last week. The third discovery in less than a month as the president points to the flow of Illegal Drugs in the u. S. As one of the reasons the country needs a border wall. My next guest oversees a span of the border reaching around 120 miles. Mark, what you described, the changes in the type of folks coming across the border. If you can explain that to people here. Thank you for having me on, dana. The drug war has changed a lot the last 20 years. Used to be large quantities of marijuana. The drug traffickers had to import hundreds and hundreds of pounds of marijuana. Now we see the rise in fentanyl, methamphetamine and cocaine. A great diminishment of the amount of marijuana being trafficked in across the southern border so the drug war has changed and also the Violence Associated with human trafficking. Migrants coming across because they have to pay the cartels to come into the corridors of our country. Many are being victimized criminally, sexually in the case of women and through the environment. The environment in Southern Arizona in the summer is exceptionally harsh. What pulls on my heart strings, my deputies pull over 100 bodies in the desserts alone. Thats a humanitarian crisis. Thats what we find. We have no idea how many bodies are out there. Dana you talk about the drug problem not only there on the border. Those are drugs that end up across the country. Thats a fact. My deputies used to be that if we interdicted two ounces of methamphetamine, that was a big bust. In the last couple weeks, my deputies had a seizure of 10 pounds, 14 pounds and 13 pounds. Theyre coming up from the southern border and being distributed across the country. So if we can stop these things in my back yard, people dont die in other peoples front yards, this is a national emergency. To suggest that its not a crisis is to be disingenuous to the people of almost being dishonest with malice. Dana theres this question. So would a physical barrier work . I think your position is some physical barriers make sense in a lot of places but you need other things. People that might be against what President Trump wants to do, look at this tunnel. Thats how the drugs come in. What would your idea of success look like here as we try to work towards an outcome . Well, dana, the problem is that weve gotten so caught up in the semantics of what constitutes a wall. We lost our focus. What i want is total operational control over the southern border. In places thats going to be physical barriers. Theyre the right tool in some areas. They make sense. In other places, theyll be very difficult if not impossible to implement and we need technology and human resources. Folks need to remember, even a physical barrier, a wall, whatever you want to call it, if its not maintained or enforced and its not monitored, its merely an impediment. Weve seen efforts to tunnel under and go through. We have to have a blended approach. Thats what the president is talking about. Dana running out of time here, sheriff. Thanks for your common sense viewpoint. We appreciate it. Well be right back. Thank you. Eep and get up on. Then i found aleve pm. The only one to combine a safe sleep aid, plus the 12 hour pain relieving strength of aleve. Im back. Aleve pm for a better am. Ensure max protein. Dana President Trump blast ago New York Times report that the fbi has been investigating whether hes secretly working for russia, calling for evidence that he may be compromised a hoax. The white house slamming a report that the president tried to conceal details of his oneonone talks with russian president vladimir putin. The interpreter that was translating between the two leaders may be forced to testify before a congressional panel. Can that happen . Lets bring in Justice Department prosecutor, james trusty. Lets start with the New York Times story. Said the fbi was looking from a Counter Intelligence perspective and criminal perspective. These were converging around the time that james comey was fired. How did you take this story . A lot of it is recycled. Didnt seem like a lot that was new. Theres selected quotes from lisa page, one of the people thats been greatly tarnished by her involvement in the probe and some from james baker from the fbi. The bottom line is, if they started a probe because james comey was fired, thats not a particularly compelling reason. Certainly has a whiff of that in terms of the mccabs of this story, possibly retaliating against the president out of loyalty to comey. Dana how frustrated are people at the white house because this story comes up and tarnishes the fbi . I do hear from the fbi a lot. I hear from my friends that are agents. They view it as a political clash acting up and being exposed. Its comey, somebody cake, strzok, page. People putting their own politics and selfrighteousness above the job of being an important Law Enforcement officer. A lot of frustration that they feel the entire department has been tarnished and theres still significant Unanswered Questions about fisa abuse, the use of the steele dossier. A lot of things that will stay in our frontal lobe for a while when it comes to assessing what the fbi did in relation to the two important probes. Dana the Washington Post says the president went to Great Lengths to make sure that his conversation with putin, that there was no report of it, didnt leak. Listen to kellyanne conway. That was a time when there were tremendous leaks, including when the president had meetings in the oval office. I can recall two calls with foreign leaders, mexico and australia that the contents were leaked immediately. There was great suspicion that some people were leaking this. Dana so now you have democrats in congress saying theyre going to try to force the interpreter to come and testify in front of congress. Is that possible, allowed under the law . Its possible. Cracks me up to think of the poor interpreter saying i signed up for what . I dont think theyre relishing the thought of being thrust into the spotlight that way. Theres a chance of claiming executive privilege. The problem is its not internal deliberations. Its a meeting. Theres some language that the president has used to suggest that he waved that privilege saying let it come out. Theres arguments that could be made. The bigger concern is not legal. Its practical. If you strip away the parties here, think about it on an institutional level. Do we want our president s to talk oneonone without turning into a listening post. Our allies and the putins of the world would be very concerned to know that anybody that is remotely in the room can be hauled out in front of congress to talk about the conversation. Dana a quick word from you. The president s nominee to run the Justice Department will testify tomorrow. What is the number one thing that prosecutors look for when they listen to bill barr who they know from the past . They want an independent, strong voice. They want somebody that will be very cognizant of the Important Role of doj in our society, an independent streak from the executive branch and the legislative branch. They want to hear a little bit of vitality to his testimony. Dana that testimony is tomorrow. So well be watching that. Well check back in with you this week. Thanks, james. See you, dana. Dana hes one of the american citizens held hostage in iran. Now his wife is speaking out about her husbands ordeal and one of tehrans most notorious prisons. And the House Minority leader set to meet with steve king about his comments. What kind of action could they take . That language has no place in america. Its not the america i know and not the party of lincoln. I am not for colds. I am not for just treating my symptoms. ahchoo i am for shortening colds when im sick. With zicam. Zicam is completely different. Unlike most other cold medicines. Zicam is clinically proven to shorten colds. I am a zifan for zicam. Oral or nasal. The best simple salad ever . D great tasting, hearthealthy california walnuts. So simple, so good. Get the recipes at walnuts. Org. I cant tell you anything about myself. But believe me. Im not your average consumer. Thats why i switched to Liberty Mutual. They customized my Car Insurance, so i only pay for what i need. And as a man. Uh. Or a woman. With very specific needs that i cant tell you about say cheese. Mr. Landry . Oh no. Hi mr. Landry Liberty Mutual customizes your Car Insurance so you only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Dana the fallout continues over comments steve king made to the New York Times. Now the republicans future could be in jeopardy after Kevin Mccarthy pledged to take action. Chad pergram is live on capitol hill with more. Chad . Were expecting a meeting later today between Kevin Mccarthy and steve king. This is the first time that Kevin Mccarthy has tried to talk to king about this. In the past half hour, we got a statement from bobby rush, democratic congressman from illinois that wants to censure congressman king. Im going to read part of the statement here. Me resolution to censure representative king sends a message to the American People. The Congress Wont turned a blind eye to his racist behavior. Anything sort of censure will be shallow. Thats one of three formal modes of discipline in the house, censure. Theyve only censured 23 members in the history of the republic. The last was Charlie Rangel in december of 2010. The last formal discipline was put to laura richardson. At the end of the day, heres the problem that republicans have. Look at the makeup of the Incoming Freshman republican class and the incoming fresh map democratic class. Theres a lot of diversity. Indian americans, native americans, white males in the republican class. This is the issue that republicans have as they try to reach out to the voters and if they dont act, theres a problem. Kevin mccarthy was critical of House Speaker nancy pelosi after the comments by rasheeda talib, the Incoming Freshman democrat from michigan after she used profane language. If Kevin Mccarthy will call out nancy pelosi how shes handling talib, he has to go the other way with king. If theres any formal discipline remains to be seen. Well see what happens after that meeting this afternoon. Dana. Dana thanks, chad. Shepard thank you. Dana both sides are putting their own spin on a pair of polls about the government shut down. The surveys show a majority are more likely to blame the president than democrats in congress. Kristin anderson is author of the selfie vote. Public opinion on the wall. You approve or disprove . Its been consistent. Not a lot of movement with that. In the last half hour, quinnipiac has come out with a new poll. Did the president s speech change your mind about the wall . Only 2 said yes. So people are really locked in. There was some movement in the abc poll that said there were more people supporting the wall than before but not a ton of movement, even after the president using the trappings of the oval office. Were at a stalemate here. A lot of voters are looking at the issue on how they view the president. People have strong opinions about the president. If youre favorable to President Trump, this is something you support no matter how long this shut down takes. Right now 82 of americans say that they havent been personally inconvenienced by the shut down. So if you support the president , youre unlikely to move because suddenly the shut down is hurting you personally right now. And then those that oppose the wall, theres some folks that may have voted for Something Like a fence in the past but they dont like President Trump. Hes closely associated with the wall and hes tied to it so they dont like it. Dana some republicans think democrats are painting themselves in the corner. Theyre the party against Border Security and that will come back to haunt them. So far do you see that bearing out . Not particularly. Because democrats continue to be ahead a little bit when it comes to questions of who are you blaming for the shut down. Theyre blaming trump. Dana yeah, we had that for the abc news poll. 53 of the blame goes to President Trump, 29 to democrats and 13 say both of them. One number where President Trump does better is on the question of immigration. When they asked voters who do you trust most on immigration, democrats 49 , 44 for trump. Is the wall the right approach . Thats when you see the support fall. Dana what about younger people . You focus on millennials. How do they break down when it comes to this Border Security issue . For younger people, they tend to be more upbeat about things like lets use technology. Lets assess where most people come into the u. S. Illegally. If its through airports for instance. Are there Different Things we can do with technology to make sure folks come in this country, if theyre supposed to be leaving, we know that. Can we use more Futuristic Technology . The president has pushed back on the idea that the wall is medieval. Do we have technology that can solve this problem better . If so, lets turn to that. Dana earlier at the convention where the president was speaking to the farmers, he said this is about 2020. He said the democrats think they can hurt me and my chances for reelection by preventing me from fulfilling not just a Campaign Promise but something that he believes needs to be done. When it comes to 2020, how much are our views shaped now . We have democrats headed to iowa. That is under way. Do people Pay Attention at this point . Im not of the mind that this shut down at this point is likely to affect 2020. Lets think about the last time there was a shut down. In 2013, republicans took a beating in the polls for that shutdown. The next month, you had the roll out of healthcare. Gov. It was a disaster. That following election, republicans did well. The shut down there evaporated as a political factor. This is a big of a longer shut down. May well become a lot longer of a shut down. Theres no way to say for sure it wont affect 2020. We have a long way to go. Dana you mentioned people are saying has the shut down affected me. Abc poll saying 38 people say its a crisis, 41 say its a sear just problem. You saw the tsa lines. Thats when it gets more real for people . I think so. The first time you see a big airport like in houston having to shut down a terminal, more of that. If theres a big outbreak of a food Borne Disease that happens that could have been prevented if there were more food inspectors, thats where you could see Public Opinion move fast. Dana thanks, kristin. Thank you. Thank you. Dana the wife of an American Health hostage in iran speaking to fox news about her husband. A Princeton University graduate detained in one of irans notorious prisons for three years. Jennifer griffin is live at the pentagon with more. Jennifer . Dana, four americans are currently being kept but i rannian authorities on what their lawyers, the state department and u. N. Working groups say are trumped up spying charges. Julian castro announcing his plan saturday from his hometown of san antonio, texas. Tulsi gabbard says she has eyes on the white house also. Im joined by phillip stunts and the author of fire them all. Good to have you here. Let me start with you, john. Any excitement around these two announcements, castro or Tulsi Gabbard who is under fire today for previous work she did against the Lgbtq Community . Yeah, im not particularly excited about her. If she had her way back in the day when she was doing her work, id be in a Treatment Facility instead of enjoying the familys built the last several years. Thats a nonstarter for me. She will be a nonstarter for a lot of progressives. Its great to hear Julian Castro talk about issues, talking about healthcare, education, issues people talk about and quality. Great to hear from him. Even more so, its exciting to see what is playing out in texas. As a native texan, this is exciting to see not only castro but what were seeing with beto as well, building the movements that will mean something. Well see what it means in 2020. Dana and phil, another run of our republican strategists come on, collin reed said texas is full of gold for democrats. I wanted to ask you about this excitement for the democrats as they figure out who it will be. You think Bernie Sanders will emerge . Hes recruited a ton of talent. I feel like its a short term gain. The talent hes recruited is following the money. Bernie has a propensity to raise a ton of money. In the end, weve seen it in politics for years and years, you get lightning in a bottle once. Not all the time but most of the time. You have a lot of candidates out there, the biggest field democrats have put together. Who will get the lightning in the bottle . Im not sure its almost 80yearold Bernie Sanders. Could be beto, elizabeth warren. Theres something that will take it. Bernie will raise a ton of money, im not sure hes going to make it in the long run. Dana john, let me ask you about joe biden. People are talking about that. There was an article about how joe biden is different and he should get in there and run. What are your thoughts . Im a big joe biden fan a long time. It would thrill me for him to jump in the race. Thats what we need. At the end of the day, i hear mixed comments from people that are close to him as to whether he will run. Dana and while i have you, phillip, i want to ask you this. Youre from florida. Theres a story in the New York Times saying that the democrats are worried that florida is possibly not the swing state that it was. Its becoming more of a red state and if florida is able to do that and take that off the map for democrats, that means the path to getting to the Electoral College is hardner 2020. Why do you think florida is turning more reddish color . The obvious republican is no income tax and you have candidates like Andrew Gilliam talking about bringing a state income tax in to the taxpayers. So they were very much against that. The one issue that has been studied by the wall street journal and a couple of others is the School Choice issue. This particular election cycle, republicans came out for desantis and on the School Choice issue and targeted African Americans and minority voters. What we found is that minority voters voted 2 3s more for desantis than for donald trump in 2016 and they doubled the turnout for desantis than they did for rick scott in the same election. So i think if republicans can continue to to build that momentum in the minority communities, that could make the state pretty big lot for republicans. Dana john, the last word on florida. Yeah, i think florida has been a red state longer than most of us care to admit. Weve seen a big change as a result of the last election when voters passed a Ballot Initiative reinstating the Voting Rights of 1. 5 million exfelons. They know who fought for their right to vote and who fought against their right to vote, the republicans who will take any at any time to silence the voices of the popular vote. Dana you both live in states where there will be a lot of ads in 2020. Fun to watch. Phillip and john, thank you. Thank you. The man accused of kidnapping the girl and killing her parents is due in court for the first time. The criminal complaints revealing how it began and how he hid her. Matt finn is live at the courthouse. Hes been on this story from the beginning. Matt . Dana, details coming from this criminal complaint. First of all, it indicates the suspect, Jake Patterson admitted to killing the closses and taking jamie. This goes on the obsession with jayme. He say he saw her on the way to school and he knew he would take her. On the way to the cheese factory, he stopped behind school bus on u. S. Highway 8 when he watched jayme get on a school bus. The defendant stated he had no idea who she was, nor he knew who lived at the house or how many people lived there. The defendant stating when he saw jayme, that was the girl he was going to take. Patterson kept jayme in the house three months and made her hide under his bed when people came over. He put weights against the bed so jayme wouldnt be seen. Jayme said she was afraid to run because the gun was visible and patterson lashed out at her one time hitting her hard. Patterson went to Great Lengths to plan the double murder and kidnapping. He wiped down the shut gun shell casings to avoid dna. On october 15, patterson shot the closs door open with a shut gun, killed jaymes father who was trying to protect his family. He busted into the both room where jayme and her mother were hiding. He shot jaymes mother in front of her and taped her mouth and took her to his house where she made a run for it.
