You can relate better than most. You know what it feels like to take it all in. Im reminding of the last straight and going to cuba and soaking it all up. So to be here on the cusp of perhaps real history. Not just history for the u. S. And north korea but history nor the world is really quite something. As you pointed out, some of the leadership from north korea making their way to the white house. Kim young chul coming here not long ago. Theyve been in the oval office for the better part of 35, going on 40 minutes. A lot of that is interpretation time. Something is said, you want for interpreters. Something else is said in reply. You wait for interpreters. I dont want people to read too much into the length of the current meeting. I can tell you this theyre looking at this with the greatest of optimism. You saw john kelly, the chief of staff was there to greet Kim Young Chul and john bolton. Theyre in the Oval Office Meeting with the president as we speak. Our colleague, john roberts, is in the pool today, so he will be reporting to us bases on everything that we hear. Dana i wanted to ask you that. You think this is a situation or might it be too risky, i would be reluctant to bring the pool into a meeting with the north korean official into the oval office . If the pool does not go into the oval office and take some commentary from the president , you think its likely the president might address the pool on his way to marine one. I know hes headed to camp david for the weekend. I agree with you. Id love to get a spray. It would be great. I think the president is unconventional to say the least when it comes to his Media Outreach and his ability and his position to directly communicate with the person people. So maybe he will surprise us and say listen, ill let you come in, take a quick spray and get them out of there after one comment by him and not hearing from the other side. I would suspect, dana, if we dont get that and at a minimum, i know the president loves to talk and get his messaging out, i guarantee you well hear from him if he stops by the press area before heading over to marine one. Dana since you and i both think it wont happen, it will happen. Well be ready and bring it that to everybody live. Thanks, kevin. You bet. Dana meantime, canada and mexico and the European Union are moving ahead with new tariffs on american goods. This is after President Trump lifted exemptions on steel and aluminum imports. Benjamin hall is in london. A lot of loud angry voices from some very close u. S. Allies across the world. Now were hearing from some of these countries about the Counter Measures they want in place in retaliation for the president s announcement on the steel and aluminum tariffs. They say this is a trade war that cannot be won by either side. Canada, mexico and the European Union are fighting back now against the decision by President Trump to slap tariffs on imports. 25 on steel, 10 on aluminum. Today the European Union issued a tenpage list on u. S. Goods. Among them, orange juice, bourbon whiskey, jeans. Canada planned 8 billion including pizza, whiskey, tablecloths and mexico followed suit with pork legs and shoulders, sausages, an apples and various cheeses. Emmanuel macron told President Trump in a phone call that the new u. S. Tariffs are illegal and a mistake. He pledged the response would be firm and proportionate. He warned that economic nationalism like this leads to war. Europes largest Automaker Volkswagen warning the decision could start a trade war and that no side would win. The e. U. Plans to bring its case to the World Trade Organization claiming u. S. Actions are illegal. Today we saw the European Union and Chinese Foreign ministers meeting. Some people are suggesting it shows a pivot to the east because countries in europe are afraid of the tariffs and might have to reach out elsewhere. President trump campaigned on America First and thats what hes doing here. Seems like theres a lot of negotiation lift and this will play out over the next few months. Dana . Dana well have to keep checking back in with you. Benjamin hall, thank you. I hope so. Dana well talk about both of these things. Lets go to north korea first. Michael allen is a former member of the National Security council. I want to take a step back. Theyre still meeting in the oval office. Thats a long time to get a chance to meet with the president of the United States who is the busiest person in the world. Quite a historic day at the white house. Just your general thoughts and observations at this point. Yeah. My first since you and i having worked at the white house when president bush was making progress with the North Koreans. You might see the spy chief come down from new york and meet with the president is certainly a historic moment. One of the things that i noted today in the new york times, it was written the americans and South Koreans want to persuade the north. Theyre continuing to funnel most of the resources into its military and nuclear programs. Short changes its citizens economic wellbeing. The north doesnt see the two as mutually exclusive. I that might be something the president is talking about. Its hard for the North Koreans to get over this. They believe Nuclear Weapons are their insurance policy to regime survival. At the end of the day, what they want the most is to stay in power. They understand that thats what we want them to get rid of. I think they might be willing to make some concessions in exchange for economic inducements and the rest. But i dont think theyre going to give up their Nuclear Weapons at the end of the day. Thats the fundamental tension that secretary pompeo and President Trump are trying to get over in order to justify having a big summit in singapore soon. Dana even as this official he cant speak for kim jongun or cant get the final word. He would have to go back. Thats what they call shuttle diplomacy. The next time they meet is in singapore. Even if that is a problem, that we cant decide what the verifiable, destruction of the Nuclear Weapons and Ballistic Missile program cant be decided, is it worth it to meet on june 12 to talk these things through . At least if youre talking, youre not going to war . Yeah, i admit i was a skeptic at the beginning. But once trump announced it, i saw the logic. Nothing else worked before. Instead of putting a meeting at the ends of a long painful process, lets have the meeting at the beginning. See if, as i say, test the new guys intentions. Hes relatively young. Hes gotten some western exposure through his education. Im skeptical. Others are skeptical. President is right to try to test this guys intentions. Is he serious, does he want to bring north korea into a new age and help his country economically. Lets try it out. Lets look him in the eye and see if it works. Lets have a healthy John Boltonesque degree of skepticism that this guy is going to put everything on the table for us. Dana i was going to talk to you about trade. I have one more question about this that is worth while. That is the role of south korea. It was reported that its possible that south korea wants to push for an end to the war. They have never officially ended the war between the north and the south, to actually do a treaty, to end the war. President trump would be a part of that. Assumably china would need to as well. The South Koreans think that that is inducement enough to get kim jongun to give up Nuclear Weapons. I find that to be farfetched but i wonder if president moon of south korea has suggested that very thing to kim jongun. I bet he has. Thats what worries me the most. We the only way we got here in the first place is the maximum pressure campaign. Sanctioning these people, getting the chinese to turn up the heat. If all of a sudden we have flowers and peace flowing out everywhere in singapore, it sends the message of you know what . It might be all right to start trading again with north korea, set up joint Industrial Projects and the rest. That sounds wonderful and i want to help their people, too, not their government, but i dont want to take my foot off the gas when we have a long way to go to get these people to give up their Nuclear Weapons. Thank you, michael. I have you back to talk trade. Thanks. Dana were keeping an eye on the oval office. Theyre still meeting. Well have any of the news out of the discussion. And new pressure on Rod Rosenstein. Senator Lindsey Graham wants to know if he should recuse himself from the russia investigation. How much money do you think youll need in retirement . Then we found out how many years that money would last them. How long do you think well keep oooooohhh you stopped youre gonna leave me back here at year 9 . How did this happen . It turned out, a lot of people fell short, of even the average length of retirement. We have to think about not when we expect to live to, but when we could live to. Lets plan for income that lasts all our years in retirement. Prudential. Bring your challenges. Can be a big bad problem that you could spread to. Family members, including your grandchildren babies too young to be vaccinated against whooping cough are the most at risk for severe illness. But you can help prevent this. Talk to your doctor today about getting vaccinated against whooping cough. Because dangers dont just exist in fairytales. Hi. I just wanted to tell you thdependability award for its midsize carthe chevy malibu. I forgot. Chevy also won a j. D. Power dependability award for its lightduty truck the chevy silverado. Oh, and since the chevy equinox and traverse also won chevy is the only brand to earn the j. D. Power dependability award across cars, trucks and suvsthree years in a row. Phew. Third times the charm. Dana take a look there. We went to commercial break. Came back. The North Koreans are still in the oval office with the president of the United States. Secretary pompeo and john kelly. Lets bring in Chris Stirewalt. Editor of half time report. Hes in a great mood today. Hes not busy at all. Were glad to have you here. Yes, maam. Dana i was asking Michael Allen about the historic moment that this really is. As the president says, well see what happens. I think thats a healthy attitude to happen, especially dealing with the North Koreans. Its a historic day at the white house and could lead to something amazing and good for the world. This series of talks, i dont think june 12 would be the only summit that would need to happen but might be a step in the right direction for peace, for the world from a nuclear standpoint and also calmer tensions in the region. If republicans want to help this president , if the members of this Administration Want to help this president be successful, help the country be successful, be good for the region and frankly for the tens of millions of people that live in a prison state in north korea, you have to be deal. Last time it was like the first time that a girl had ever said yes to a date. Were going to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize. And then its like calm down. See what happens. Tap the brakes. See what happens. Dont set expectations too high. Thats not good in a practical sense for during the negotiations. Neither are they politically. If the republicans want this to be a good thing for their party and their country, they have to be cool and stop with the Nobel Peace Prize nominating stuff. Dana were going to bring any news out of the Oval Office Live as soon as it happens. Meantime, senator Lindsey Graham has gotten to the russia investigation with a letter to the Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein questioning whether he actually should recuse himself. He asked three questions. Number 1, do you consider yourself a potential witness in the Mueller Investigation regarding the firing of director comey by President Trump . Two, if not, why not. Three, if so, should you recuse yourself from further interactions with and oversight of the Mueller Investigation. What do you think is behind this, chris . He is a potential witness of fact, i believe, is what the lawyers would say. That he may know things and may be compelled to testify and what he saw or heard, the preparation of a memo, what did comey say after the firing back and forth. What graham may be doing to a certain degree is smoke out to see whether or not mueller is going down the path of looking at obstruction of justice and that kind of stuff. Because if you say do we need to throw this guy out because he might testify, have to testify in an obstruction of justice case, if the answer come back no, bro, were okay, thats a sign that graham has been able to get some information about a potential the potential inquiry from muellers office. Dana the president yesterday pardoned dsouza. That is done. Thats one of the things i did want to ask you about. The washington write this, that trump delivered an indirect but unmistakable message to michael cohen, Michael Flynn and others ensnared in trumprelated investigations that they too could be spared punishment. This from roger stone said that the special counsel has awesome powers, as you know. The president has even more awesome powers. What is he trying to say . The president has demonstrated repeatedly. No power of the presidency, other than to make war in the moment of emergency, is greater than the power to pardon. Its something that sovereigns were given in the old world that we preserve the right to do justice dana why did the Founding Fathers do that . Sometimes what is legal is not just. Sometimes legal findings are not just. Having the chief magistrate be in a position where he can say the law was followed here but justice was not done and im going to intervene to do right. Its not about people like joe arpaio or people like that. Its been that have been convicted, been through the process and im releasing you from this because justice was not done in this case. Its not supposed to be this stuff. This president is going to stretch and pull the definition of what is acceptable here within this very broadlygranted constitutional power that he has. Hes going to use it for his own defense and hes going to use it to hurt the investigation against him. Theyre making no bones about it. They are playing for hardball keeps right here. Dana my last question is about the politics of it. If youre a republican or democrat, it might give you energize your base maybe for both sides, right . Like prove the mood on the right, make them think you have a fighter for you. Also on the left, it increases their enthusiasm. If throwing and pardons like swedish fish jazzes up your base, your base is weird, this is about the president and this is about him trying to keep his skin in what is going to be a very consequential six, eight, ten week period here. The president is trying to rattle muellers cage. Hes trying to show that he has some options here and hes not afraid to use them. The political consequence will depend on what mueller comes up with and when trump is ready to sit down and talk. Dana did you know downstairs in the lobby you can get seven swedish fish for a dollar . How big are the fish . Dana the candy. Theyre good. Next time youre here, ill treat you. Chris stirewalt, thank you. You bet. Dana a live look at the white house. A top aide to kim jongun is meeting with the president. Theyre still in there. Well continue to monitor the situation. Democrats looking for a path to take back the house. Could next weeks california primaries trip them up . Guys, i know its so hard to trust but youve got to be strong. Remember janet . She got cash back shopping with ebates and hasnt been skeptical since. Whered the money come from . Stores pay ebates. Psh psh then ebates pays you. Psh psh psh psh psh psh psh psh psh and theyll send you a check. Psh oohh sign up for free. Shop your favorite stores. Get cash back. Ebates. Something to believe in. Join today for a 10 bonus. When this guy got a flat tire in the middle of the night. Hold on dad. Liberty did what . Yeah, Liberty Mutual 24hour roadside assistance helped him to fix his flat so he could get home safely. My dad says our insurance doesnt have that. Dont worry i know what a lug wrench is, dad. Is this a lug wrench . Maybe . You can leave worry behind when liberty stands with you™. Liberty stands with you™. Liberty mutual insurance. Is not a marathon. Its a series of smart choices. And when you replace one meal or snack a day with glucerna made with carbsteady to help minimize blood sugar spikes you can really feel it. Glucerna. Everyday progress. But their nutritional needs remain instinctual. Thats why theres purina one true instinct. Real meat 1. A different breed of natural nutrition. Purina one true instinct. Now, try new purina one true instinct treats. Dana senator Dianne Feinstein plans to introduce a bill that would stop separation from children at the Mexican Border with their parents. President trump is blaming the separation policy on democrats calling on them to fix loop holes in a 2008 law designed to combat child trafficking, which was written by feinstein. As we await news out of the president s meeting with the north korean official, lets bring in josh crushar. Its a historic day in my book, even if it doesnt lead to the denuclearization of north korea, to have the second in command, the north korean official to come visit the white house and have a chance to sit with the president of the United States for almost an hour now. Its quite remarkable. Youre right, dana. President trump really views this as an important part of his political legacy as much as his Foreign Policy legacy. He really wants he doesnt need a deal but he wants to make some diplomatic progress in dealing with the North Koreans. The fact that you have a senior official from north korea on american soil i believe for the First Time Since 2000 shows you how high the stakes are and how the Administration Wants to cut a deal. The last 18 months or so, since the president has been in office, certainly Hillary Clinton said the president is too much of a hot head, chaotic, he doesnt have experience. The president is able to develop this relationship and hopefully solve the problem, if he can. Have the democrats played this incorrectly . Look, i dont think its a coincidence that Donald Trumps job approval numbers have gone up as theres been a stronger diplomatic track. The republicans and democrats alike want to see some path to what was looking like a tricky situation. It doesnt look, Foreign Policy experts like the folks youve had on will tell you this is not an easy situation to solve. Any signs of progress is what could help trump politically. Dana this is all happening in the lead up to the midterms, that are very important. Democrats need to flip 23 seats in november in order to take control of the house. Larry sabados crystal ball says the democrats and the republicans have equal odds of winning the house majority. Thats different than what people thought three months ago. The republicans are the clear favorite to maintain Senate Control and the dems should start 2019 with a few more governor seats. Your thoughts on where we stand today. Republicans clearly have closed the gap pretty significantly to where they were a few months ago. Look at these national polls. The generic ballot that offers a test where the parties are. The democrats lead has gone from double digits to low Single Digits in many surveys, even the polls that democrats are pulling out in the big house battle grounds show that if theres a wave, its more small than huge. So the momentum is on the republicans side. The energy is still on the democrats side. You still see remarkable enthusiasm in these special elections, the offyear elections. Thats not going to be dissipating any time soon. Its still a competitive battle for the house. Id give democrats an edge but its anyones game. Dana as much as youre cheering on the caps in the stanley cup, tuesday night we get Election Results from the california primary. The democrats have gotten into a pickle out there. Have they been able to crawl out of that . California was supposed to be the democrats best state in winning and their key to winning the house in 2018. Instead, that i have this unique system where every one runs on the same ballot and causing headaches for the democrats. As many as three house races, democrats could be favorites to win a seat to being shutout entirely on the november ballot. So its going to be a big high stakes night next tuesday, which could tell us a lot about which party is favored to win control of the house. Dana do you have any sense on whether the money that the democrats are spending to try to solve the problem the problem is from the folks watching it might not understand what were talking about, theres so Many Democrats run that they have watered it down. The two republicans on the tickets are doing good. If they are get the most votes, those two are the ones on the general ballot in november. Thats right, dana. The one race i would watch is the Orange County contest. A lot of democrats thought they had it there. What youre seeing is a republican challenger that is doing better than the democrats that youre talking about running to his left. So if the republican survives, thats a bad sign for democrats. Dana is it a bad sign for rorbacher . He has to worry about a different campaign. Democrats thought they could win. Dana thanks, josh. Thanks, dana. Dana the white house meeting still happening. The north korean official has been in there about an hour now with his interpreter and the president s interpreter. So john roberts is in the pool. Well bring that to you if he gets to go in. Conflict within the Republican Party. The president faces a backlash from his decision to impose tariffs on key u. S. Allies. The chair worm of the rnc, Ronna Mcdaniel weighs in. Dana as we continue to monitor the president s meeting with the north korean official, im joined byRonna Mcdaniel. You had a chance to be at the white house and talk with the president. I wonder if you could describe the moot and the approach with this mooting. Yes, we were at an event in dallas together and came back to washington. The president recognizes this is an important time for our country. Im not going to speak about these private meetings regarding north korea. I can tell you first hand, were seeing this across the country in our polling that people are looking to the president and saying this is finally somebody that is moving the dial with north korea. Hes trying to deescalate the tensions that weve had with the North Koreans. Hes moved the ball further than previous administrations. It just shows the strength of President Trumps ability to negotiate and to be tough and to put america in a position where were gooing to demand that they denuclearize and we have already seen head way with the three hostages coming back. I think these will be very fruitful discussions today. Dana this comes on a day that the president let everyone know that hes happy with the jobs reports coming out. It was good. Unemployment at 3. 8 . It was curious to me, i know you have polling and you know what messages work. I wonder if leader pelosi, if they have different polling because she said mays job report shows that the strong employment numbers mean little to the families hit with soaring new costs. Republicans cruel cynical healthcare sabotage campaign is spiking coverages. I know that republicans care about jobs and the economy. The democrats care about healthcare. Do they think that that is a republican weakness . Lets look at obamacare. The democrats own obamacare. They put in a failing Healthcare Plan and hurting millions of americans. That happened before trump came in office. Democrats refuse to come to the table and work with this president on healthcare. They own that. When it comes to jobs and the economy, the Democrat Party is about rhetoric. The Republican Party is about results. Dana weve been waiting over an hour, the president has been meeting with the north korean official in the oval office. Quite a prestigious opportunity. The president there shaking hands with them as they are about to depart. They delivered a letter to from kim jongun to the president. Certainly saved a lot on postage because they were able to bring it over to him. Well see here in the president actually says anything to the pool. John roberts, our reporter there at the white house, is in the pool today. Could be that the president doesnt make any comments right away. Hes about to leave for camp david for the weekend. If he does what he typically does, he might talk to the pool. Well get a sense of what that meeting was like. Ronna, let me ask you about how the democrats in your opinion have played this north korean development. I understand that you see the polling across the board where it says that americans feels like this is going in the right direction. The democrats have been critical of the president , even when there are advances like this on the world stage. Your thoughts on how theyre positioning themselves. Weve seen some unfortunate things come out of the democrats with regard to north korea. They thought the summit was cancelled, they mocked the president. They said that kim jongun was giggling. I dont think theres anything to giggle about. Kim jongun is a leader that has treated his people horribly, threatened multiple countries across this world with nuclear annihilation. I mean, this isnt a person that we should be rooting for. Its sad to see democrats entrenched so far in partisanship that theyre not even rooting for the president. The president has made huge head way. We should all be championing this, rooting for our country and its good for our world to have the negotiations happening. We dont want north korea to be nuclear capable. Dana thanks for joining us. Thank you. Dana well continue to talk about this with Chris Stirewalt who stuck around. He cant get away from me that easily. The north korean official still having a chance to talk to the president there as he says goodbye to themes as they delivered the letter to the president. Obviously you cant tell anything in particular about a meeting that lasts over an hour. You cant imagine President Trump sitting in there with someone that he doesnt feel like it was productive. And the president wants to take the message back, were not going to kill you. The big gaffe before, people talking about the libya option where libya denuclearized. Moammar qaddafi ended up dead. If youre the kim regime, youre brutal dictators. If some of the people got ahold to you, they would do dana chris, take a look at the screen. The president calling over other North Koreans with the traveling party. Taking this picture and making sure that kim jongun and the north korean people, you can bet that this picture will be blasted all over state television in north korea. This is a big moment for the kim regime. Theyre at the white house. Once upon a time part of the axis of evil. Embraced by the president. The former spy master of that country, of that regime. Hes being embraced and welcomed in by the leading western power. This is a moments. This is one for the history books. Dana secretary of state pompeo on his 31st day. Hes there with the president in that photograph. I hope hes keeping a diary. A whirlwind of diplomacy for him. The First American to go to pyongyang and figure this out for the president. And he has to play another round of diplomacy with the japanese, South Koreans and chinese. What will the other parties to this accept . What are they willing to take on in terms of a deal. The president clearly wants a deal. At what price and what are our allies and our foes in that region willing to accept and do. Unified korean peninsula, denuclearize, in what way . Who is in charge . How does this go . Where does kim end up . All of this stuff. Dana its not usual that a president will leave the oval office and escort an official back to their vehicles. This is a sign and showing of respect and willingness to be gracious to the North Koreans. I think this could probably go a long way. We know a little bit more about kim jongun than in the past. We had no Real Intelligence there. Now secretary of state mike pompeo has met with them a couple times. We have more information. You can see the president talking to the press. Well be meeting on june 12 in singapore. Went very well. Its a gettoknowyou situation. Mike has spent two days doing this. Weve gotten to know their people very well. We will you people will have to trouble. Youll be in singapore june 12. And i think it will be a process. Its not and i never said it goes in one meeting. It will be a process. The relationships are building and thats a positive. What is your stance on what the North Koreans are willing to do on the issue of denuclearization . I think they want to do that. I know they want to do that. They want other things along the line. They want to develop. Japan is involved, south korea is involved. Were involved in everybody wants the United States. So were going to help in the process. Without us, it wouldnt happen. You see a lot of positive things, including with china. A lot of very positive things happening with president xi who is helping me quite a bit with this. So well see where it leads. Well be june 12, well be in singapore. I never said it happens in one meeting. Youre talking about years of hostility, years of problem, years of hatred between so many different nations. Youll have a positive result in the end. Not from one meeting. You appeared to question their sincerity in your letter to kim jongun last week. Have they gone far enough now my letter was a response to their letter. The media forgot that. The media said oh, you had a meeting and you cancelled. I didnt cancel the meeting. I cancelled in response to a tough statement. Were over that, totally over that. Now were going to deal and start a process. Were meeting with the chairman on june 12. I think its probably going to be a very successful ultimately a successful process. Well see. Remember what i say. Well see what we will see. I think its going to be a process that we deserve to have. We really deserve they want it. We think its important. I think we would be making a big mistake if we didnt have it. I think were going to have a relationship and it will start on june 12. What can you get done in one meeting . This is a very good meeting. This is a meeting where a letter was given to me by kim jongun. That letter was a very nice letter. Oh, would you like to see in that letter. How much . How much . Can you give us a flavor it was a very interesting letter. At some point it may be appropriate and ill give it to you maybe. Youll be able to see it. Maybe fairly soon. Really this was a letter presentation that ended up being a twohour conversation. Why did it go so long . Because we found the whole subject matter interesting. Because they want to do something. If its possible, so do we. I think all were going to do is be there on june 12 and see what happens. Mike has been dealing very well. They have a very Good Relationship with mike pompeo, our secretary of state. It was very interesting. This was literally going to be the delivery of a letter and ended up being a twohour conversation with the second most powerful man in north korea. [question inaudible] we talked about everything. We talked about a lot. We talked about sanctions. [question inaudible] we talked about a lot of things. We did. The big deal will be on june 12. Again, its a process. It doesnt were not going to sign going in to sign something on june 12 we never were. We are going to start a process. I said take your time. We can go fast, we can go slowly. They would like to see something happen. If we can work it out, that will be good. The process will begin june 12 in singapore. Do you believe kim is committed to denuclearization . Yeah, i do. He wants to be careful. He wants to see it happen. Hes not going to run and do things. But i told him to be honest with you. We would not take sanctions off unless they do. The sanctions are powerful. Youve seen how powerful. Youll see how powerful sanctions are when it comes to iran. You see what thats doing to iran. We have sanctions on. At a certain point i look forward to the day when i can take the sanctions off of north korea. You talked about human rights we did not talk about human rights. Do you expect to talk about it on june 12 . Could be. We probably will. Maybe in great detail. We did not talk about [question inaudible] we did. They asked about sanctions. [question inaudible] its going to remain what it is now. I dont want to use the term maximum pressure anymore. Were getting along. You see the relationship. Its not a question of maximum pressure. Saying at this time way it is. At some point a deal for the good, for millions of people. Maybe a deal will be worked out. Despite the state of relations between the United States and north korea theyre okay. Theyre good. Is it like the relationships we have with a couple other countries . Probably not. I think the relationship we have right now with north korea is as good as its been in a long time. They had no relationship under the previous administration. It was nothing. It was nothing. It was a nothing. Nothing was done. Hey, folks, this should not be up to me. This should have been handled a long time ago. This got to a critical point. This should have been handled many years ago. Not only by president obama but other president s. This should have been done years ago. You plan to offer the North Koreans economic aid . What will happen, south korea no, i dont think the United States will have to spend. I think south korea will do it. I think china will help out. I think japan will help out. No, i dont see the United States spending a lot of money. We have three hostages. How many money did i spend for the hostages . Were very far away. Were very far away. Those places are very close. Its their neighborhood. Were thousands were 6,000 miles away. So ive already told south korea, you know, youre going to have to get ready and japan also. I think they want to see something great happen. Japan does, south korea does and i think china does. Thats their neighborhood. Its not our neighborhood. Yesterday you were concerned about the meeting that lavrov was having i didnt like it. Where are you today . I didnt like it but i could be positive. I dont like the russian meeting yesterday. I said what is the purpose of that . But it could be a positive meeting. If its a positive meeting, i love it. If its negative, im not happy. It could very well be a positive thing. [question inaudible] that could happen. That could happen. We talked about it. We talked about ending the war. This war has been going on has to be the longest war. Almost 70 years, right . Theres a possibility Something Like that thats more of a signing of a document that its very important in one way, historically its very important, but well see. We did discuss that. The end of the korean war. Can you believe were talking about that . Were talking about 70 years. [question inaudible] were going to discuss it prior to the meeting. That is something that could come out of the meeting. Thats something that may be could come out of the meeting. [question inaudible] china would like to see a positive result. I have a lot of good relations with chairman xi. Hes a great hes a wonderful guy. Hes a man that loves china. However, he wants to do what is best for china. I think china and president xi would love to see something happen here. Youre saying youre going to guarantee kims regime. How are you going to do that . Were going to make sure its secure. When its over, its over. Its not going to start up again. They have a potential to be a great country. I think south korea will help a lot. Japan will help a lot. China will help a lot. [question inaudible] thats a very complicated question. Youll see that over time. When you gave your speech in seoul, you talked about a bright promise of north korea should they join the company of nations. If you leave kim in place, can you have a transformation . I think you can and i think its going to be very successful. Theyre incredible people. Its going to be a very great success. Well see what happens. Well see you on june 12. Im sure well see you before that. Meantime, how is sarah doing . Okay . Have you discussed another summit . I told him, youre doing to have probably others. Wouldnt it be wonderful if we walked out and everything was settled . I dont see it happening, but i see over a period of time. Frankly, i said take your time. Take your time. Its going to remain as is. But take your time. One thing i did do and it was very important, we had hundreds of new sanctions ready to go on. He did not the director did not ask, but i said im not going put them on until such time as the talks break down. We have very significant sanctions. We had hundreds that are ready to go. I said why would i do that when were talking so nicely . Was the meeting more of a personal diplomacy its a getting to know you meeting plus. That could be a very positive thing. What was your response to the letter . Did you send anything back . I purposely didnt open the letter. I havent opened it. I didnt open it in front of the director. I said would you want me to open it . He said you can read it later. I may be in for a big surprise, folks. So long, everybody. What is your next move on nafta, sir . Nafta its been a terrible deal for the United States. People are starting to see it. We lose over 100 billion a year with mexico. We lose many, many billions of dollars with canada. Canada doesnt theyre very restrictive as to taking our Agricultural Products and other things. You know, all of these countries, including European Union, they charge five times we dont charge tariffs. They charge five times what we charge for tariffs. I believe in the world reciproc reciprocal. Its not been done. No other president ever brought it up. Its going to be done now. So were negotiating numerous deals. Were talking about nafta. To be honest with you, i wouldnt see i wouldnt mind seeing a separate deal with canada and a separate deal with mexico. Youre talking about a very different two countries. But i wouldnt mind saying a separate deal with canada where you have one type of product, so to speak, and a separate deal with mexico. These are two very different countries. Its been a lousy deal for the United States from day one. We lose a lot of money with canada and we lose a fortune with mexico. Its not going to happen like that anymore. Mexico has taken our car companies. A big percentage of them. We cant do that. Look, the American Worker agrees with me. Obviously the stock market agrees. When you look whats going on with the stocks, theyre starting to see. But if you take the European Union and you see the kind of tariff they change and we dont, its called not fair trade. I want fair trade. I like free trade. At a minimum, i want fair trade. Well have it for our workers. The other side understands it. To be honest, they cannot believe theyve got ten away with this for so many decades. And canada and the u. K. Are the closest allies theyre our allies but they take advantage of us. And i love canada and mexico. And i love europe. They make 100 billion a year. They have strong laws and we have horrible laws. They have strong laws. They could solve our border problem if they wanted. They dont want to. When they want to, ill be happy. We have a good chance of doing some great trade deals. That will make America Great again, right . Thats what were doing. But america has picked up. Weve made about eight trillion in value since were double the size of the economy of china. We picked up a lot of value, a lot of wealth since ive been president. More than 8 trillion. Thats a low number. Because were talking stock market wealth. Im talking beyond that. Our companies are doing great, were doing great. Our military is rebuilding. We have a lot of great things going. Were going to straighten out trade. The trade is going to be easy. Other countries understand, you know, when i talk to them, they look at me and this is in closed doors, not for your people, and they essentially say, we cant believe weve gotten away with this for so long. Its like you guys cant believe you guys what is on the agenda i want everyone to watch. We have a great we have such a great country right now at this level. I dont think weve ever been on an economic scale, you look at the numbers. 3. 8 . We have the lowest numbers of unemployment that weve had is it 50 years . Its 50. 50 years. So we have the best we have some of the best economic numbers weve ever had as a nation. That goes a long way. Were building something very special. Just remember, were twice the size, our economy, twice the size of china. Good meeting today. I think its a great start. Whats on the agenda for camp david . Relaxation and a lot of work. We have a lot of calls lined up. Negotiating trade deals. Im working, working hard for you people. Thank you. Dana that was President Trump giving us a lot of information, a lot of color on his meeting that lasted almost two hours with the North Koreans. Lets bring back Chris Stirewalt. I was reminded of the title of Corey Lewandowski let trump be trump. Thats what you just saw the last 20 minutes. The president said the summit is on on june 12. He told the press, get your bags ready. You will be going to singapore. He said this wont be the first meeting and he never thought it could get solved in one meeting. He did say another thing though, that one thing that the South Koreans have been pushing for could get done at that meeting and that is the possible ending of the korean war. Do i have that sound to use . Play that for chris. We talked about ending the war. This war has been going on for has to be the longest war, almost 70 years, right . Theres a possibility Something Like that thats more of a signing of a document that its very important in one way, historically its very important. Well see. We did discuss that. The ending of the korean war. Can you believe were talking about the ending of the korean war . Youre talking about 70 years. Dana chris, as a historian, what do you think about that . Its the ending of the korean war, means the ending of the Demilitarized Zone where my father was stationed 50 years ago, youre talking about the reunification of the korean peninsula. That is a big deal and that is not necessarily something that china is going to be very happy about the idea of. Dana nor japan. Nor japan. Then we get into the most complicated issue here. North korea is not a salvageable state in the form that it is. How do you deconstruct north korea . If youre talking about were talking about north Koreas Nuclear program. How do you deconstruct this state . How do you undo this . China likes it as a buffer zone. We like it with having a check on china. If you take the troops out, what kind of country is this and it could be a live wire. Dana the president said he did not open the letter. The north Korean Leader say he could open it or open it later. He said he could be in for a big surprise when he opens the later and he would try to share it in the future. He said that the United States wouldnt need to do economic aid for north korea. That would come from south korea, china and japan. He mentioned something about what was something about the hostages that were returned to the United States. I dont know what he meant by that, chris. Perhaps well find out. In the meantime, what we know, the june 12 summit according to President Trump is on. If youre going to singapore, get ready and ill give you the final word. We have 18 seconds. Quite a time to be alive, 2018 never ceases to disappoint so far. Dana better than 2017. I have to say. Thanks for joining us, cries. Im dana perino. Heres Trace Gallagher in for shep smith. Im Trace Gallagher in for shepard smith. Breaking news. The summit between President Trump and kim jongun will happen on june 12 in singapore. That is the word from the president. Watch. You people are going to have to travel because youll be in singapore june 12. And i think it will be a process. I never said it goes in one meeting. I think it will be a process. The relationships are building and its a very positive. Very positive thing. Comes after President Trump met face to face with kim jonguns righthand man, Kim Young Chul hand delivering aet
