This has been on going for the past few weeks. This is all according to a report in yahoo news, which said the investigation is focused on digital staffers in battleground states trying to figure out if there was any corroboration or coordination with russian bots and trolls. President trump has said very little publicly since arriving here in south florida for his holiday vacation. He has tweeted a few times and, in doing so, has focused on the special counsel investigation, claiming it is tainted using Andrew Mccabe the fbi Deputy Director whose wife has run as a democrat for a local seat in virginia. Mccabe is expected to step down early next year, john. The administration is making some changes to the Healthcare System . Reporter right. Administration officials tell Us Trump Administration is examining and perhaps early next year will make changes to the way you can buy individual insurance plans. Removing some obamacare regulations and making it easier for americans to buy Cheaper Health Insurance plans. One of the other tweets weve seen from the president here is asking republicans and democrats to Work Together legislatively on a health care fix. Remember, republicans in a way tried to go at it alone in 2017. Failed to do so. The effort was stopped in the United States senate. So the president is now asking congress and both parties to try to work on that again. That is on top of a host of other things the president is asking lawmakers to address, including immigration. Hes also looking at infrastructure. Thats something that white house Officials Say the president will discuss the first weekend in january at a camp david meeting. There he will meet, speak with House Speaker paul ryan and the Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell on 2018 legislative priorities. There are a host of other issues lawmakers must address in the early part of next year including budgeting and the debt ceiling. Of course, john, that all is compacted with the fact that it is an election year. Little shorter and little more difficult. Back to you. They come around every two year. More on infrastructure in a moment. Thank you very much. Welsh President Trump signed his tax bill into law last week, but the debate over it is still under way. Heres Bernie Sanders criticizing the plan. I understand youre not a fan of the tax bill. You dont like the large Corporate Tax cut. Youre not happy with the tack cuts for the wealthy. But next year 91 of middle income americans will receive a tax cut. Isnt that a good thing . Yeah, that is a very good thing. Thats why we should have made the tax breaks permanent. But what the republicans did was make the tax breaks for the corporations permanent, for the taxpayers temporary. One said in a few short weeks the message from the left has evolv evolved. We welcome the author of those words james freeman, assistant Editorial Page Editor for the wall street journal. Did it surprise you to hear Bernie Sanders say that . I was surprised. Probably saw nancy pelosi saying this was armageddon. Larry sanders talking about the lives that would be cost from tax reform. This is obviously something new. And its interesting to see people now that its become law, now that they couldnt stop it, acknowledge, do you know what . You are gonna get tax cuts up and down the income ladder, not just the wealthy. If Bernie Sanders is saying lets make the middle tax cut permanent, i think this ought to be job one for Mitch Mcconnell. Put it on the floor in january. They werent able to do that because of the reconciliation rules. The arcain senate rules that dont allow you to do certain things with certain legislation. And the reason they went that route is because the democrats, mr. Sanders an independent socialist would not agree to negotiate tax reform. So this is great news. If theres actually room to cut more and if we can make those middle class tax cuts permanent, i think it is time for the republicans to call his bluff. In 2018 people are going to get their pay checks. Theyre going to see their federal with Holding Numbers generally drop, right . Yes. I think thats why you see some of the coverage and some of the comments from opponents change in the last few days. They realize that reality is about to set in. And i think people know that theyre gonna look foolish if they keep saying theres no tax cut for people and people start seeing the pay checks and they see how the with holding has come down. They see wages have gone up. Its kind of a moment of reckoning here. Its not armageddon stphr. Not at all. Lets look at 2018. The president is talking about infrastructure spending. Right. That makes some republicans nervous. But is that something republicans and democrats on capitol hill could get behind . They might. I think taxpayers should be nervous. Maybe taxpayers shouldnt get too nervous. Democrats may want to not work with mr. Trump at all and please the Resistance Movement within their party. So its possible you get no deal. But if there is a deal, you look at the history of infrastructure plans. They tend to be very costly, very inefficient and we dont necessarily get the roads and bridges we were promised. He is a guy who came up through the building industry. He builds big projects. Thats how he made his money. If theres a guy who knows how to put a bridge together or do a Water Project or build a highway, it ought to be this president , shouldnt it . I think thats exactly right. This is relevant experience he brings as an outsider coming to washington what you would hope is that if there is a deal, it goes more along the lines of what he might do as a private developer. The money actually goes to roads and bridges instead of going to other politically favored projects. You think about the 2009 stimulus sold as an infrastructure plan, only about 10 actually went to infrastructure. I would hope mr. Trump, as he would have when he was in the private sector, would also seek quick approval, stream line process for getting Environmental Impact statements done and really what you want is the cheapest way to build, which is dont label federal rules demandi demanding union labor. Theres thinking the president might put federal money on the table but then relax some of the rules and regulations so that states and local governments look at some of these projects and say, hey, we can do that ourselves. I think if you make it easier to build in the u. S. You probably dont need the federal money. The white house talked about how most of the money will come from private investors. Im not sure why all of it couldnt. You look at what just happened. The tax cut was basically an infrastructure plan. You just have a new incentive for people to build infrastructure, whether its pipelines, toll roads, bridges, factories. So i think theres a lot of private money ready to do this if we let them. James freeman from the wall street journal. Going to be a fascinating 2018. Thanks. Much of the country still digging out from a Holiday Weekend snowstorm. Erie, pennsylvania, received more than 5 feet of snow, including 34 inches on Christmas Day alone. New york, philadelphia and San Francisco demanding the military report criminal convictions to a National Database for gun background checks. Griff jenkins live in washington. Whats this lawsuit about . Reporter its about suing the military for failing to report the criminal history of Service Members and significant members to the fbis National Criminal background check system thus allowing some of those members to purchase and possess firearms when they should have been disqualified. The suit centers on the case of that tragic shooting in november in southerland springs texas when devan kelly was able to get a gun after the air force failed to report the 2012 conviction and courtmartial for domestic violence. New york city mayor bill deblaiseio said in a statement this failure has led to the loss of innocent lives by putting guns in the hands of criminals and those who wish to cause immeasurable harm. This comes as the pentagon Inspector General acknowledged that across all branchs of the military they failed to fully report in about 30 of the cases last year. The air force specifically 14 of the cases. Jon . The lawsuit is also looking for Court Oversight over the pentagon . It is unprecedented. Theyre asking for court monitoring, the pentagons compliance with reporting criminal history data. In the suit they write, quote, this suit, therefore, seeks judicial intervention, ie, intervention by an apolitical branch of government fully familiar with monitoring and maintaining compliance with the law. Its unprecedented in calling for this oversight because this sort of monitoring, you may recall, is traditionally following civil rights cases. Never before in a gun background check. I should add we asked the pentagon for reaction but they did not have any. Instead pointing us to a prior statement regarding how they deal with this sort of reporting, saying they do everything they can to ensure that the information goes to the fbi. There can be a cocoon of information that focuses their current bias. On the internet, everything is simplified. When you meet people face to face, it turns out theyre complicated. The city has been a target lately. Recently american intelligence tipped off russia about a series of attacks planned by the Islamic State prompting vladamir putin to call and thank President Trump. Democrats seem to be having trouble converting voter enthusiasm into Campaign Contributions for the 2018 midterms far behind republican fundraising efforts. But dems may have a builtin advantage when voters head to the polls. I think theres no question that democrats will gain seats in the governorship, state legislatures and u. S. House. Why . As you said, midterm election. But the second reason is, they lost so much ground during the eight years with president obama. They have a lot of ground to make up. I think theyll make up some of it next november. Jon guy benson is a fox news contributor. Al hyatt was on the National Finance committee for hillary for america. Thanks both of you for being here. Al, youre the finance guy, lets start with you. You know how important Campaign Contributions are. There seem to be precious little in democrat iic coffers. Why . Well, we are lagging a little behind the republicans. Thats often the case, jon. Republicans have big money. The rnc typically outraises the dnc. But what matters for the voter ennews kwrafpl. We raised hundreds of millions of dollars more than Donald Trumps campaign, yet hes the president of the United States. Similarly, in virginia, new jersey, alabama, democrats won despite not necessarily having more money. Its about voter enthusiasm. Jon so when you look, guy, at the voter enthusiasm situation right now, do republicans hold the advantage or democrats going into 2018 . Democrats clearly have the advantage there. The real clear politics average on the generic congressional ballot gives democrats a 13 point edge at this point, which is enormous. So weve seen over and over again over multiple cycles, jon, that money advantages do not translate into political victories. Al just mentioned Hillary Clinton vastly outraising and spending donald trump and trump won the election. Id also look at the 2010 election cycle, when republicans won a 63seat land slide in the house. They were outspent by tens of millions of dollars by the Democratic Party that year. So, of course the rnc is happy to be pulling in this money. The dnc is sucking wind when it comes to raising money, but that may not determine what voters turn out. Jon larry sabato has his crystal ball for 2018. Seems to think democrats will have trouble in trying to recapture the senate. Heres what larry had to say. I think the Senate Leans Republican in november, simply because of this. You have 26 democratic seats coming up, including ten of them in states President Trump carried. You have only eight republican seats. Only eight seats for the republicans to defend. That gives the republicans a big edge there. Am i saying they cant blow it . Of course they can blow it. But starting out, starting out, theyve got a big edge. Jon what about the senate, al . What do you think in 2018 . Well, certainly, i hope they do blow it, jon. Look what happened in alabama. Who would have imagined a Democratic Senate pickup there. We have chances with bob corker retiring, arizona. I do think it is stacked against the democrats as larry said because democrats have to defend so many seats in states that President Trump won. Jon ten seats in states that trump won. Right. Jon five of them states that President Trump won overwhelmingly. What about the house, guy . Do republicans have to worry about their prospects in the house . I think House Republicans are probably a little bit nervous as they take a look at the calendar flipping to 2018 next year. I dont think its a slam dunk victory for democrats but they certainly have the momentum going in. They need to net 24 seats which is modest. Its doable. Again, i think the senates going to be the battleground where republicans have an opportunity to hang on or maybe even expand their Senate Majority because you just went through some of those numbers. There are some states where donald trump is still very popular that he won overwhelmingly in 2016 where there are democrats representing those states in the state who consistently salute chuck shumer. Claire mchaskill, heidi highcamp, joe donnelly, joe manchin. The list goes on. So i think the house, im not saying that its gone. Theres a long way to go between now and then and things can change dramatically in politics quickly. But if i were the democrats, id be feeling a lot better about the Lower Chamber and they have a lot more work to do to reclaim the upper chamber. Jon how much, guy, depends on how the new tax bill is perceived by americans . Yeah. Thats a huge part of this i think, jon, because what we heard from democrat, frankly, lies for weeks that this is a tax bill that will be a giant give away only to the rich and corporations and average americans are going to get a tax hike. That was one of the lies that was told. Were seeing now some of the good news rolling in from businesses expanding and paying out bonuses and investing more. And then 80 of americans including 91 of the middle class will get a tax cut. People have heard the opposite. When reality intrudes on those receptions that should resound to the benefit of the republicans because the democrats have not been telling the truth. Jon al is shaking his head. I have one more topic, al, that i want to get to. President obama was sitting down for a fairly wide ranging radio interview with britains prince harry. I want to play for you an snippet of what he said ab social media use and get your thoughts. Here it is. The question, i think, really has to do with how do we harness this technology in a way that allows a multiplicity of voices, diversity of use, but doesnt need to a balkaniization of our society. Jon al, does that sound like its directed at the current occupant of the oval office . It probably is in part. Theres very few democrat, if any, who dont believe that President Trump is way too bombastic, belligerent on the internet. Im sure president obama knows that it applies equally to everybody. We have way too much divisiveness. Just look at twitter or any social media platform. Its often very hateful. Thats unfortunate. Those of us in the Television Industry know that all too well. Guy, your thoughts on what the former president had to say . If you look at his other comments on that topic with prince harry, i think he was talking about the current president to some extent. And i think most of the points that he made were good. I think some republicans might say heal thy self. Hes been part of sort of this atmosphere when he was president. The advice he passed along to his successor is good advice. Jon guy benson and al motter thanks for joining us. Good to be with you. Sure, jon. Outgoing coverager of new jersey putting his stamp on the new federal tax law. What Chris Christie is propoegz. Hes not the only lawmaker doing it. Plus, new u. S. Sanctions on north korea targeting key people in the Ballistic Missile program there amid growing fears that kim jongun could use biological weapons. The evidence just uncovered. I think its increasing every day, which means that were in a race, really. Were in a race to be able to solve this problem. Hes getting closer and closer. And theres not much time left. I promise to have and to hold, from this day forward, till death do us part. Selectquote can help you keep your promise. With Life Insurance starting at under a dollar a day. But you promised dad. Since 1985, weve helped millions of families, by finding them affordable coverage by impartially shopping highly rated insurers, offering over 70 policies. Dad youre coming, right . You promise . I promise. Keep your promise. Jon the northeast and midwest locked in a deep freeze. The bitter cold expected to stick around into the new year. Chief meteorologist rick is here with more. Cold for a day or two is manageable. Cold for about ten day ors so, that is a completely different story. And the cold, thats the coalest air mass we have in north america. You see temperatures, minus 3 in fairbanks is what it feels like. Feels like minus 20 in fargo. So you get the idea. This pink all the way down here. Feels like one degree in kansas, 28 in dallas, 40 new orleans. Still warm in florida. Thats the only spot really that is dealing with very warm temperatures. These are the actual temperatures. You get the idea. The problem is going to be this cold air sticks around for a very long time. In fact, probably until around january 3rd or fourth before this cold air mass goes away from here. Long term models, obviously, can vary with that. The other thing we are seeing are these incredible pictures of snow around the great lakes. Great lakes are relatively warm for this time of year. This cold air mass is seeing incredible record breaking snow. So were going to continue to see the snow flying here around the great lakes, some spots have seen over 70 inch ors so. Temperatures are going to remain cold. Maybe a break thursday, friday, saturday take a look at this. Next round of cold air comes back into the northern plains, jon. Jon just a block or two away from here theyre getting ready to drop the ball in new yorks times square. Its going to be cold for everybody for new years eve. New york city times square, your High Temperature on sunday, 20 degrees. That means once the sun goes down, were probably going to be looking at temperatures into the teens. And if youve ever stood outside for very long in temperatures like that, stand outside in 40 degree temperatures and it gets cold. Stand outside in the teens, its going to be dangerous, actually. People need to keep this in mind. Once they put you in that pen, youre there for hours and hours. Jon bundle up if youre coming to the big apple. Thank you. You bet. Jon new u. S. Sanctions against north korea targeting two people the Treasury Department calls key leaders of kim jonguns Ballistic Missile program as russia offers to mediate negotiations with the u. S. While some see any talks as a stalling tactic by the north. Theyll essentially go back to the negotiating table, but weve seen time after time again, from the 1990s under clinton to i was very close to the Six Party Talks under bush from when i served with the Vice President , to they essentially use those talks to buy time torque continually develop their program on the nuclear side and Ballistic Missile side and have just marched forward to having a fully Operational Program that can attack anywhere in the world. Jon meantime, we are learning there could be new evidence that the rogue nation is planning to use biological weapons. Joining me now, lanny chan former policy director for the mitt romney campaign. Thanks for being here. Some pretty disturbing news out of north korea. Its never good out of that country. But, the possibility that theyve been working on anthrax and testing missiles with anthrax warheads . Right. We know back in 20 15rbg kim jongun paid a visit to what was called at the time a pesticide factory. The interesting thing about this, its very easy for north korea, very easy for any country to flip the switch and go from manufacturing pesticide to manufacturing biological weapons. And so, in fact, a lot of analysts said, hey, in fact, we have credible evidence that the North Koreans are pursuing some kind of biological weapons capability. If you look at that the fact that weve got defectors coming over that test for the anthrax antibody in their bloodstream. Theyve either been vaccinated against anthrax or been exposed to the anthrax virus or bacteria, this is a very serious situation, jon, one that clearly inkates that they mean business. Jon some defectors are also showing signs of radiation exposure. Talk about what that might mean. Well, you know, could mean any number of things. Its a little bit inconclusive. Could mean they had exposure to bad air. Could be manufacturing side effects. Of course, it could also be side effects from exposure to nuclear testing. So we dont know whats going on. We do know the North Koreans are committed to having a nuclear program. We know they are committed to disrupting the peaceful relationships between countries in east asia. So they remain probably one of our most significant, if not the most significant, Foreign Policy threat we have at this point. Jon want to take a tkpwrafrbg look at what the North Koreans have been doing in terms of missile launches. In 2012 they launched four missiles. 2013, eight. Then 18 in 14 and 15. 16 in 2016. And this year so far 24 missile launches by the north korean regime. What does that say to you . Well, i says to me that they want the world to take notice. They want the world to accepted the fact n some way, that they have a new year capability, that they have the capability to deliver warheads that could damage foreign country, whether its japan or the United States. Or even our partners in south korea. And that they are able to do that with relative ease. They want the world to see that. So for the United States, its important for us to continue to maintain the posture, first of all, that they cannot be a Nuclear Capable country. That is unacceptable. But second, their belligerence is unacceptable. So the Trump Administration ratcheted up sanctions. Theyve imposed seven rounds this year already. I think thats the right thing to do. But weve got to keep the pressure on, jon. Jon the chinese suggested they are on board with the sanctions but isnt there evidence that the chinese have also been inlegally shipping oil to north korea . Yeah, thats right. The chinese have been bad actors on this for awhile. Theyve been saying one thing and doing another. So its important that we get the chinese to work with us. I know President Trump, in his meetings with president xi of china, emphasized the importance of the chinese coming along with us to contain north korea. But its going to be very difficult for us to do so if the chinese continue to be acting in bad faith. So we do need their help in this situation. They are going to be critical to peacefully resolving this conflict with north korea. Jon lanny chen, thanks for your insights. Thank you, jon. Jon here is a live look at the big board. Markets pretty flat most of the day. Just ahead of the new year. Governors of new york and new jersey are letting homeowners prepay their 2018 property taxes before the new tax law kicks in on january 1st. Jerry willis joins me from the New York Stock Exchange to explain. Reporter thats right. So what were hearing from new jersey. I want to talk about that state because weve got some interesting numbers from there. New jersey governor will issue an kpebive order allowing you to prepay taxes. Why would that happen . Because the average deduction for Real Estate Property tax in new jersey was 21,720 before tax reform. After tax reform, theres a cap on that, so called salt cap of 10,000. So your benefit would be halved. So lot of people nervous, worried, concerned. I think the governor responding to that just as andrew cuomo did in new york last week. Seeing lots of changes at the end of the year as taxpayers try to get ready for this new tax package. Jon how did fedex and u. P. S. Do over the Holiday Season . Well, its interesting. They both put out press releases saying they did very very well, but they didnt give us any real details about it. But heres what we found thp this will help tell the story. Returns alone from the christmas Holiday Season, 90 billion. Thats just the return business. When you look at sales, online sales, which is what these two Companies Benefit from, there was an 18. 1 year to year gain in online sales. Thats what they deliver. Thats what they make their money on. Return sales, 15 to 30 of the overall total. So fedex and u. P. S. Doing very well. We dont have chapter and verse. They havent given us all the numbers yet, but we do know they did very well. Theyre celebrating. I have to tell you though, downside for them, they have to upgrade what they have. They have to upgrade their trucks and their deliveries just to keep up with this. Its been a juggernaut of a Holiday Season. Jon with all of that spending and tkpweufgifts they get delivered somehow. Thats right. Jon backlash after President Trumps decision to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel. Now a gesture of appreciation. How the president might be honored near jerusalems western wall. Plus, major gains in the fight against isis. How much territory they have lost during the trump presidency. The decision follows President Trumps historic decision to recognize jerusalem as a capital of israel. Weve made tremendous strides, obviously, in syria, with isis. Weve taken back virtually all of the land. Same thing in iraq. Were making tremendous strides in some of the story right now. Jon President Trump touting major progress against isis. Military Officials Say the Islamic State has lost 98 of territory it once held. Half of it recaptured under the Trump Administration. Some warn the threat is not over. Joining me john bolten former ambassador to the u. N. , senior fellow at the American Enterprise institute and a fox news contributor. Ambassador bolton, at one point the isis thugs controlled an area the size of ohio. What happened . Well, i think inevitably the involvement in the United States and our assistance to antiisis forces has brought the calafait to an end. I think we could have done it a lot sooner. I think we have done it in a way that empowers iran and irans surrogates the baghdad government which is, sad to say, functionally a satellite of iran. The assad regime and hezbollah in lebanon. While weve accomplished one major objective and it was worth doing, i think weve set the stage for the next conflict in the region. I dont think weve really solved the problem of isis terrorism worldwide. Jon how much credit does President Trump and his administration get for essentially wiping most of isis off the map . I think significant credit for rapidly escalating the fight. Unaccountably the Obama Administration seemed to think they had forever to achieve the objective. That just gave isis time to get a large number of its leaders and allow them to train more europeans and americans in terrorist activities. Once you decide to eliminate isis, the priority should have been to wipe it out as soon as possible. They didnt do that. The Trump Administration picked up the pace, but unfortunately didnt change the Obama Administration strategy of relying very heavily on troops and shia militia of the baghdad government which is a major reason why iran has now created an arc of military control. And in fact from iran all the way to the mediterranean. Jon one of the warnings early in the conflict was that these isis fighters once seasoned on the battlefield would go back to their home countries and cause trouble there. The feeling seems to be now that many of them have been simply killed and not that many have returned home, but the danger still remains. The ideology of this organization is still there . Exactly. We dont know exactly how many escaped, how many were killed. The more the better of the latter, thats for sure. Its not necessarily the case that skill and conventional battlefield warfare is gonna make you a better terrorist. But i think the people theyve trained over the year, the people that have come from europe or refugees, reportedly refugees from the region did, in fact, escape in large numbers. And theres every reason to think isis has transmuted itself into other portions of the world. In libya, in yemen, in the afghan pakistan region so we could see them appear. Its significant what we did to them in syria and iraq, but still far from over. Jon ambassador john bolton, thanks for your expertise. Glad to be with you. Jon another delay in an election nail biter where one questionable ballot turned a close race into a tie. Why the results are still up in the air. Plus, four hours into an overseas flight the crew realizes one passenger had a ticket for a different destination and the plane turns around. How did this mixup happen in the first place . A random drawing is postponed. It comes as Shelly Simmons announced plans for a Court Challenge over whether the election was a tie. The court declared a tie last week, meaning Neither Party would control the house. The three judge panel decided one of the ballots contained double markings intended for simmons opponent incumbent republican david yancy. The board of elections was set to meet to determine the winner of a race by random drawing. So now theres an investigation into the famous flight to nowhere. The tokyo bound plane forced to return to los angeles hours into the flight because a passenger managed to get on board with a ticket for an entirely different flight. A celebrity was also on board, william. Thats basically why we know all about this. Reporter yes, jon. If it wasnt for supermodel christie tiegen, this would not be making world news, nor would 1. 3 Million People have watched the video. Tiegin live sweeted the whole eight hour round trip to nowhere including this cheeky post with husband john legend. Thank you so much for taking me on this awesome vacation. Welcome to los angeles. Jon very funny. Reporter they were complaining saying the person kept saying they had a united ticket. The machine made noises that register to nowhere. John . Jon how did all of this happen . Do we know . Reporter teigen may think those are a silly noise making machine that dont mean anything but they are connected to the passenger and crew manifest. They talk to Government Systems at the destination n this case japan, and here in the u. S. Theoretically if a passengers ticket did scan and the person is trying to get on the wrong flight, red lights and alarms go off that say, do not board this passenger.
