When you realize they are dead what did you do . I said a prayer over both of them. I grew up out on theed farm, road horses as much as i could. My mom had a book that thats what your career would be. Mine was always a Police Officer or a firefighter or a soldier. It was in december of 1983 when i actually signed up. I wanted to be in the infantry because thats where you get to do all of the fun stuff. When i got out of the military i started working as a Police Officer and after that i picked up a job as chief of police in a small town then moved on to. I signed up for benghazi and was going to be there for 60 days. That was my first time into libya. I remember walking through our university and there was an Army Recruiter and he picked me out of a crowd. He said, hey, what are you going to do after college . He showed me a ranger video. I asked him that looks pretty tough. It has to be tough to get in. If a lot of people cant do it i want to do it. I was discharged and i got a call from black water they were starting saying hey we are looking for contractors to go to iraq. I said yes. I got to call to go to libya. Third grade. Thats when we lived across the street from the trading station. I choose the marine corps. I always heard they were the toughest guys. I got out two months before i got bored. I ended up with a job in heating and airconditioning. I did that until i got into contracting. The first time we went to libya it was trip plea. The second time wint back the third time and fourth time they were all in benghazi. This attack lasted 13 hours. Four people died including our ambassador. It was on 911. I want you to take us back to the beginning. For people who dont know this job, contractors, how do you explain it fto them . Private security contractors. For us it was protecting cik officers overseas. How did the hierarchy take place . We had the chief of base. That was bob . Yes. Then you have the team lead which would be in charge of us. Our team leader is a staffer. Hes an employee for the ac and all of the contractors if you are talking military wise analyst folks. Tyrone you called rone. There are two other members that remained anonymous jack and db. Correct. You were set up to protect the annex which was the cia. The first owe ad team. The other facility there which is what you guys call the consulate. Where are we here . Heres the consulate and heres our compound. Now three quarters of a mile as a crow files about a miles drive, maybe a mile if you did the whole thing. This site was it well protected . It looked nice. It was a beautiful compound. It had orchards, it had a really nice fountain, swimming pool. They had their own security. They were their own security. Diplomatic security. They didnt have like an American Force like a marine deta detachme detachment. They did it themselves. What did you tell them . You guys are going to die. You know that right. You need us call us. What is your reaction when you fear ambassadors coming on september 11th of all days. Theres only five guys to protect him and its a huge compound. 911 comes. Pretty routine day. Yeah during the day. Excellent normal day. Doing organization stuff. You had moved late in the afternoon. Went out to meet some people for dinner. Normal night. Town looked normal. There was nothing that looked any different than any other day. There was no whisper that this video was a major problem in benghazi. Didnt know about any video. So, how do you hear that something is wrong . Our team leader came across the radio. I remember. I looked at my wife. It was 9 32 when i first got the call on the radio that said, we need help. Grs means grs operators i looked and said something is going on we are going to do something tonight. Grabbed my stuff put my shoes on and started moving to the team room. Where were you . Myself and jack were in building z getting undressed getting ready for bed. I made the tl right there and said whats happening . He guys cons lat center attack. You could hear the fire, the concentration of fire and explosion. It was a relatively quiet night for benghazi. By 9 00 the seven americans in the compound are settling down for the night. You have the ambassador in his room writing his diary, sean smith the Communications Expert online talking with a friend. You have five Diplomatic Security agents. 30 or 50 minutes later men stream on the compound bearing ak47s shooting off their guns. Almost instantly they over run the compound. The militia men were guarding the compound they flee. You are ready to go . Five minutes we are ready. Thumbs up ready to go. What happens . I went to the tl. Said hey ready to go. Bob looks right to me and looks at the team leader and goes you guys need to wait. He is on the phone talking to somebody. I assumed they were trying to coordinate us to link up with the 17th of february. Which is the local militia. I got there 15 minutes i got out of the car and bob and the team lead were standing on the front porch and said, hey, you need me to go over there we are losing the initiative. Bob just looks straight at me and says stand down you need to wait. Starting to get calls from the state department guy saying we are taking fire. Need you guys here. Why are we waiting . Ambassador stevens and sean smith are forced to take refuge in the safe haven inside the building. With them is Scott Whitley a security agent charged with protecting the ambassador tore. They hide behind a locked gate. He waits in the shadows with a rifle ready to shoot any one who tries to enter. The attackers cant get in. But use nearby diesel fuel to set the villa on fire. From beginning to when you are ready to go thumbs up, you are ready to go out to the time when you actually pull out. What is that time . 35, 45 minutes. Said to bob we need to go and got the wait again. I got in the car i said get in the back seat. He gave me a thumbs up i gave him a thumbs up and we left. You guys did that pretty much on your own. Yes. We were never given the okay to go. We got the final straw for us to go at least thats my opinion and how i felt was where one of the dfas said they are starting to light buildings on fire. You need to get here. They used the word stand down a number of people including the House Intelligence Committee they insist no one was injured from responding to the situation at the compound. His wording was quote there was no stand down order given to american personnel attempting to offer assist stance that evening. What do you say to that . It happened on the ground. T3] on the ground that night. To you . To us. To myself twice and to tig once. It happened that night. We were told to wait and stand down. We were delayed three times. You asked for support. After i was leaving i said get us an isr which is a drone and get us a spector gun shoot. The drone would have given you eyes above and 130. Support protection. Firepower. Exactly. I remember. Gives me chills. The line of buildings is on fire you dont get here we are going to die. He leads ambassador tosteven and sean smith into the building smoke is in the area. He hopes to get them to a nearby bedroom which has a window that can be opened from the inside. He says, follow me. Crawls for that spot. Its dark and smoky. But he makes it to the window, he open it is and drops out. Only then does he realize stephens and smith havent followed. He goes back in several times but cant find them. Finally exhausted and choking, he climbs to the roof and radios Alec Henderson and dave bubu his message the ambassador and shawn smith are missing. Tig, you and jack and rone are going to the front gate and it is open . When i was standing right here the land cruiser came i thought it was bad guys filling the langers. I drew down my weapon and i saw the f guys were driving it. Thats when i heard eddy, we cant find the ambassador. Started moving towards the front porch getting up on the front porch and thats when they were pulling seans body out of the window. Sean smith . Sean smith. But the ambassador is still lost . Ambassador is still lost. Take you and tyrone woods rone go in the building many times and theres a moment there. He was saying hey, i cant find my way out. I said come to my voice, come to my voice. He almost made another right to the dining room and it was totally ungulfed in flames. I reached out and grabbed him went out and coughed our lungs. You are back here . One of the libyan guards in the back said come open the date gate. Open the gate. I came in looked at the commander when you come through this gate you close it you lock it. I moved forward. I later learned he didnt do that. We made pofor it down the road. You have been there a while now. Been in multiple times then you hear gun fire from outside the compound. And then rocket propelled grenades. Big explosion, bam. Where does it hit . Over in this area. Basically on the other side where we were trying to mass collect and get out. Another explosion goes off and its coming from the gate. Its left open. I was trying to return fire. I was in the safety i heard the gun fire. What did you do . I moved here over to here and crouched down. At the same time the guys from rpg moved in to view of the gate and thats when he was coming up here shooting run away. Come up here shoot and away. Just as he was shooting i shot him. You shot him and he went down. And it was like a light switch and everything stopped. You guys finally get together, you what, give up the search for the ambassador . The team leader made the call we have done everything. The state Department Left the compound. Rone tells him make sure you take a left. In the confusion of the attack they take a right. They take a right. I cant say what i said to myself on camera but it was damn, you knuckle head. Now we are hauling a piece of property theres nobody else on. The tle comes over the radio and says everybody get down we are getting out of here. Hungry for the best . Its eb. Want to give your family the very best in taste, freshness, and nutrition . Its eb. Egglands best. Better taste. Better nutrition. Better eggs. Do you have something for pain . I have bayer aspirin. Im not having a heart attack, its my back. I mean bayer back body. It works great for pain. Bayer back body provides effective relief for your tough pain. Better . Yeah. Thanks for the tip oh hey craig, i need to talk to you. Hey jake. You know how you wont let me touch your dart . Well ive got some things that you cant touch. Is that right . Whatchya got there . Just a crossbow. You can shoot things with it. Cant touch it . No, you cant touch it. Look at this, my George Foreman grill. Ah, that cooks meat so good. buzzing electronic toothbrush i cant touch the toothbrush that you put in your mouth . giggling yoga you have an operational dvd player . You also cant touch my digeridoo. Digeridoo . Or didgeridoo . Car Insurance Companies say theyll save you by switching, youd have, like, a ton of dollars. But how are they saving you those dollars . A lot of Companies Might answer um or no comment. Then theres esurance. Born online, raised by technology and majors in efficiency. So whatever they save, you save. Hassle, time, paperwork, hairtearing out, and, yes, especially dollars. Esurance. Insurance for the modern world. Now backed by allstate. Click or call. Esurance. Insurance for the modern world. Is all ready the brand ofstate the year. D Berkshire Hathaway home services. Good to know. To stay away from the consulate. You tell the case officer. Yeah. Shes she is trying to say her goodbyes and i am like we need to go now. Like any good case officer she is trying to gather information of whats going on. I looked at her and i said you are in my world now you need to be quiet. Let me do what i need to do. You have been back on the compound in the annex for a while. You said you wanted to be with your team. You also knew you had a job to do there. I knew i was the only one. We had two site Security Officers who were a great help, but from the grf side i was the only one that was there. The drs guys come back first. The armor guys come up they roll in. I could here what they were leaving they announced it over the radio and then i heard tons of gun fire and knew where they were at just from the direction. Am then all of a sudden they are calling that they are coming in hot. Coming in hot which means they are coming in fast. Had the gate open. Ae you hear that flop, flop sound of the tires. You still hear that sound coming through and both sides and the front windshield were all shot up. You can see the relief on their face when they got in. Scott got out and jim was still blocked almost from head to toe. I told him to get inside get some medical help. The younger guys asked what they could do and i told them to get on the building and we had one get up on each one of the buildings here. I went back up on this building until our guys come in. They knew where they needed to go. Each one of them went to their preposition or preplanned positions. Jack is up on this roof, rone is up here. Tanto and dv is here tig is in this corner around i am over here. You guys were exhausted. You are preparing maybe for another fight. Mike rone went back up. You hear the entire screeching over in this area and we start asking over the radio to the tl, they have fed 17 coming over to assist us. Then the response was, they are not sure, so we immediately assumed that anything that is coming in is coming in good or bad guy. I asked sector. They said they are checking on it. Thats the last time that i got an actual answer if we are going to get air support or not. I was expecting we were going to get air support even if it was a fly over by a jet or whatever. No doubt that would have been nice. Want to put this back up here so you can describe what is outside the annex that you are most concerned about. The stock yards. Stock yards and a lot of concealment, a lot of bushes and small trees in this area. This is what we call jabi land. They are coming over from right at this intersection. They are starting to stage here in this whole area it is a big old parking lot. Heres the house you are seeing people start to go into that little area. They can come in to here and get to our back gate. You are watching this develop and these cars and the people going into this house and you dont know if it is bad guys or not . Whats the engagement . Wait until you see the reaction that specified them attacking us or going to attack us. I am not going to wait to get hit before i hit back. We start seeing movement coming from this direction through the night vision goggles. We we had kids here you didnt want to open fire. I dont want to shoot anybody who hdoesnt have it coming to him and i definitely dont want to shoot a child. I remember db says i got movement. Are you laying them . I got my layers and i am lacing targ my laceser. He said, i got your laser. Could they see . It . Only with night vision. In my mind we are going to engage them we are going to let them get as close as possible and take them out. The first thing they fired was an rpg and it went flying over the compound. Came over myself and db. I was bringing water over to oz. I have got about right here about the corner of the gym when huge flash. Homemade explosive. It goes off. It hits right here. To me it was okay, its gone and we started firing, started lighting them up. I was just shooting laying targets shooting them. The firefight starts, what does it look like . It is sawesome. Green hue and lays he shasers b forth from target to target. You see three sets of lasers bouncing back and forth taking out targets. You will see a flash of light which is the enemy shooting at you. It is going past your head and you are reengaging in those spots. Anybody take a shot . Me and tig were in the corner trying to shoot off the lights secondary to one of the lights splattered up into my face and took me across the bridge of the nose. You push back. You take down a lot of people. And it stops. To me we won that game. All right, good deal. Moral goes up. It wasnt over yet. That was a probe. It was coming back with a bigger force. It was a big break there. Two and a half hours . Two hours. At what point do you hear about ambassador stevens . There was a dsa agent, he got a phone call and thats how we found out he was at the hospital. By 1 00 a. M. Local looters and curiosity seekers have entered the consulate ground and infill straighted the safe haven. Six apparently Good Samaritans come across an unresponsive man. They take him to the Benghazi Medical Center where he has worked on for 45 minutes before being declared dead. They have scott wakelands phone which had been given to ambassador stevens during the attack. Calling wit lands stored numbers someone gets to the American Embassy in tripoly and says a man has been found and hes dead. The caller provide a description matching ambassador chris stevens. Theres current pulls up a guy comes around from the side of the car. Hes reaching like he is throwing something. Right as he brings his arm back to throw i engage him. I move and shoot him two to three times. He goes down and whatever he through landed just short of our back gate and exploded which then engaged again it was the signal. A oo this was there it was a larger one coming. Doing 20 cards. Like ducks in a row. Hitting one guy in the head. Drop it. It is first to fire. They were kind of spraying. They were constantly spraying. Not the movies. You dont put it on auto and you go after it. You cant hit anything. If you are aiming a single shot you shoot them and shoot them and shoot them. You have taken ak fires and rpgs. Are you worried something heavier is coming . After the second, yes. You are waiting for a third. Waiting for something bigger. You know. During that Second Attack is when i finally got a all you can think of is what was the last confer ration i had with my spouse or my kids. You want to make that last conversation always good. What was it . It was the night before. I knew i had spoken with them hey, thats it. Am get them out of your head time for back on the job. Rone had just come back up and we had bthere talking and we both had young kids. Rone had extended but he was looking forward to going. He wanted to see, getting to see his babies. He had twins. Every day, two or three times a day we would skype and send photos and videos of the twinss whenever i was expecting a phone call and didnt get one i would start to worry about little bit. You guys good . We always e may goed or talked on the phone. He would always call around 3 or 4 00 p. M. Our time. Always. If he didnt i knew ahead of time why he wasnt going to be able to call. We would talk every day whenever time would allow most often the same time every day. If he didnt call me at the time he was supposed to call me then i would begin to worry. That is one of the reasons i am fighting. One of the reasons i am doing what to do not only for the people back home but primarily you are thinking about your team. Their families. Their family. We are all family now. They are brothers and thats the way it is. You are thinking of this family here as much as that family there. Most of the people were staged here. I ended up on south of the command center in building c with rone at this point. More cars come by. What happens . We dont know what they are doing. We didnt know if they were guys lost or still trying to probe up. Theres a guy with a cell phone. He waklked up and walked bac maybe he was getting gps coordinates. It is erie. I want to shoot him. He could be some guy taking a walk. Moral is up, this is good. We fought them off again. I was expecting more cars. The first i was happy to see them. Three of the guys i had worked with before i recognized them off the bat. Including glen. Navy seal. Connection with rone and with jack and you had worked with him. We had just done a trip before benghazi. I just knew both. They come in they go to building c. Uhhuh. And you guys are still kind of waiting. Whats happened . The aircraft they had wasnt big enough to take us all back. They were going to take the nonshooting personnel and get them out. To the airport. We were going to stay there and hold the alamo. And literally. Literally. And i think they had been there about an hour. Me and rone were talking about that whats taking so long why arent we getting out of here. The sun was starting to come up. We better be ready for another attack because this is whens is going to come. It was about that time that glen came up on the roof. Climbed up the ladder. Come over and was talking to rone and rone had introduced me to bub because i had never worked with him before. He said bub is a sniper. Hopefully we aint going to need you but i am glad to have h another shooter up here. Glen turned almost immediately a mortar come in and landed on top of the wall right there. When i heard it, i didnt even know i heard it. It sounded like when a rocket goes off. Small arms fire started coming from it this direction. Rone had a machine gun. He stood in probably like a three quarter cross position and started laying down hey along this avenue of approach here. I started to engage with him. I ran out of ammo, knelt down changed magazines and coming up and i start to reengage another mortar hit almost to the center of the building here and that one it knocked me back and thats what hit rone. Rone was standing to my left. I got knocked back and as i stood back up i saw hy xep out the corner of my eye he was in a fetal position in the corner right here. I stand up and try to reengage with my rifle and i bring my hand up from here down is hanging off at a 90 degree angle. Your hand is hanging down. Yeah. I keep trying to bring it up it wont stay. I cant make it work. Thats when the second round hit thats when i saw bub still down about right here. I wasnt sure if he was hit or if he was taking cover. I turn back and again try to engage and get my hand to come up and a third round hit in the same vicinity. At that point i felt like i got hit by stung by a thousand bees up and down my side. I figure i better get to some cover now in case anotheru3tn o comes in. The whole night was quiet after that. Tough to talk about . Yeah. Yeah. Just a little. What has to be done, you are in a fight you have to stay in a fight. Thats the only thing i could think of. Rone is down, somebody needs to keep taking fire. You see this mortar attack happen. What will are you doing . I am still over here onto youer 3 covering this area. For me it looked like it hit right around here. We have no cover from mortar attacks. Even the buildings, i am surprised it didnt collapse. Another explosion hits right here when i heard another boom, thats when i jumped off the tower and moved back and got somewhere right around here and thats when the mortar hit. Once that mortar hit it was pitch black and dead quiet. Jack came over and said, hey, man, theres no movement thats when i sprinted up to the ladder and i kind of went on up as fast as i could jumped up the fire pit and i saw one off to my left a couple other people over here but the smoke was still up there from just the debris kind of settling down. So i moved over to dave and i find a turn c turn cut. Got the tirn c torn cuts on him. I said i need help up here. I need help. I heard noise so i moved over to where the noise was. I was trying to get a tourniquet out. I pulled out a tourniquet and tried to fix my arm. I kept grabbing it trying to put it back in place. Hes sitting there going check this out. I said stop you are going to make it worse. He had a tourniquet there reached down grabbed a tourniquet and through it on him real quick. He asked me if i could get over to the ladder. I was like, yeah, i am going to have to. I knew there were others down. You were pretty banged up. Yeah, just a little bit. I got hit in the chest, up and down my thigh, got hit in the throat and i said i guess i will have to. I hooked my top arm around the top wrung of the ladder climbed over and concentrated on if i fall now i am going to break my neck and die and thats the last thing i want to do. So i am just concentrating on getting my foot on that wrung and sure enough i slipped luckily i had my arm and i caught myself and pulled myself back up and got down and was able to inch my way down the ladder. After i got oz up and moving i went straight back to rone. He was still in the fetal position. I rolled him over. There was no response. I ripped off his body armor and took a pulse, still nothing. I got the flashlight shine in his eyes. No pupil movement, no tile layin dilation. Put my ear to his chest to try to see if his chest was going up and down if i could hear a heartbeat. Heard nothing. Left him. Went over to the other guy. Did pretty much the same exact thing, checked him, ripped off his body armor and there was nothing. When you realized they were dead what do you do . Well, i just kind of said a prayer over each, both of them. The quote is god watch over him, good him to where he needs to be, take care of his family. So after that, the boys the whole time they want to get right off the roof. When i was doing the prayer i ignored them. Gathered up everybodys weapons that were left. You got to get the pod des off t bodies off the roof. Tough. The d boys picked the bodies up and dumped them over the side of the roof. Maybe thats not the right description but they got them off the roof in the most expedient manner and by doing that it was throwing them over the edge of the roof to get them down. Made a personal decision, right, wrong, indifferent, i know that thats not something you want to see. Com. S turned on the news there when was four americans were dead and two unidentified. I am like, he hasnt called me. I tried texting him. I tried calling him. I just hit my knees and prayed. In past experience if i see anything right away i get myself worked up. I try to not worry about it. I thought well i will hear from him in the moaning or the next evening. There was a ticker on the bottom of whatever news channel it was, and it says something to the effect that there was an attack on the annex in benghazi. S my heart dropped i have to tell the kids. That was my first reaction. We take you to when the bigger convoy arrives. Finally get there there are like 50 carings. Technicals with the big machine guns. It was a mean convoy. I had my gun on. I reached my hand off with my offhand and went like this. He reached out, reached out the car and big smile. One thing that we learned on this job you have to learn to read people. Is there a part of you guys that looked at this convoy and said where was that . Where was that before . Yes, i did. I thought where the hell were these guys . Is where were they . Oo you get everybody mounted up you drive to the airport with this massive convoy. Probably still worried about attacks on the way. Sure. You get there and theres another confrontation between between the militia and whatever militia was controlling the airport. You have a smaller airplane not exactly big for everybody, load you guys up. Or you walk up. They were starting to pull me up and i said i walked into benghazi and i am going to walk out of here. I get up slide to the edge theres still blood dripping down my arm. Because it was a private jet, there was a Flight Attendant and her eyes as big as saucer plates. She is laying towels down because she is worried about her bosts airplane getting messed up. They bring in dave and he was in and out of consciousness through out the flight. Somewhere in between that somebody is clearing their gun, their pistol in the plane. In the plane. A round goes off. The pilot says he wasnt going to take off until they figure out if the fuselage had been breached it didnt penetrate anything. He was bleeding out. Another delay he wouldnt have made it. He was down to as much blood a person could lose before they die. You are on plane the next guys are going to wait for the flight with the booed des and eventually the body of ambassador stevens . Yes. Yes. I didnt answer it on the first ring. A couple of times. I didnt know who it was going to be. If it was going to be him or if it was goings to be some representative informing me of what had happened. I took a deep breath, i listened and i said okay and i love you and i probably didnt sleep much that night. It was really brief. He just said i am okay. Everything is okay. Quickly hung up. It was super quick. Finally its 5 00 in the afternoon. A nurse had called in said he had arrived there. I was like i could breathe. Just thank god. I would do it all over again. Yes. Yes. Yes. I would be there thats just the way we are. We run to it not run away from it. How often do you get back to this 13 hours . Do you think about it a lot . Every day you think about it. There isnt a day that you dont. I am reminded of it every time i go to grab something. Because of your hand. Because i still dont have full use of it. Probably never will have full use of it. But so it is a reminder. It remind me of the honor of those who died like tig and tanto and rone and bud and db. Very few times in life do you get to form a bond like this. Most of the time it is done in situations that suck, but, you know, i wouldnt give it up. When you see all of the back and forth that has happened over the past roughly two years, what do you think about all of the political battle . You cant get wrapped up in it. We are not politicians we are soldiers we were marines, rangers, we still are. We will always be. Leave that to the politician. I cant speak for why a politician did this or did that all i can speak for is what we did that night and what happened. I gave you 30 minutes back and i gave you air power wro ambassador stevens and shawn smith be alive today . They would still be alive. My gut is yes. Are you in on that . I strongly believe we would have left immediately they would still be alive today. I think there are a lot of things that could have been different. I mean, air power, if we had air support they would have sent somebody in. It would have been a mortar. Which means that rone and bob would have been alive. Would it have improved our chances .
