From the instant i took office, i moved rapidly to revive the u. S. Economy and smashing job killing regulations and enacting tax cuts and fighting for fair and reciprocal trade agreements. We are proamerican. [applauding]. Our agenda is profamily, progrowth, and most of all proamerican. [applauding]. Thank you. We are advancing with unbridled optimism and lifting our citizens of every race, color, religion and creed very, very high. Since my election we have created 7 million new jobs, 5 million more than Government Experts projected during the Previous Administration. [cheers and applause]. The Unemployment Rate is the lowest in over half a century. [cheers and applause]. And incredibly the average Unemployment Rate under my administration is lower than any administration in the history of our country. [cheers and applause]. If we had not reversed the failed economic policies of the Previous Administration, the world would not now be witnessing this great economic success. [cheers and applause]. Unemployment rate for africanamericans, hispanic americans and Asian Americans reached the lowest levels it history. [cheers and applause]. Africanamerican youth unemployment has reached an all time low. E] [cheers and applause]. And africanamerican poverty has declined to the lowest rate ever recorded. [cheers and applause]. Jobs are pouring into neglected 9,000 previously neglected neighborhood thanks to opportunity jones thank to great tom scott as part of our Great American tax cut. [cheers and applause]. In other words, wealthy people in companies are pouring money into poor areas or areas that have not seen investment in many decades. Creating jobs, energy and excitement. This is the first time these deserving communities have seen anything like this. Its all working. Opportunity jones are helping americans like Army Veteran Tony Rankins fromm cincinnati, ohio. After struggling with drug addiction, tony lost his job, house and family. He was homeless. But then tony found a Construction Company that invests in opportunity jones. Our roaring economy has for the First Time Ever given many former prisoners the ability to get a great job and a fresh start. This Second Chance at life is made possible because we passed landmark criminal Justice Reform into law. Ju everybody that criminal Justice Reform could not be done. I got it done and the people in this room got it done. [cheers and applause]. Thanks to our bold regulatory campaign, the United States is the number 1 producer of oil and natural gas of anyone in the world by far. [cheers and applause]. With the tremendous progress we made over the past 3 years, america is Energy Independent and energy jobs like so many other elements of our country are at a record high. [cheers and applause]. We are doing numbers that no one thought possible just 3 years ago. Likewise weht are restoring our nations manufacturing might even though predictions were, as you know, this could never ever be done. Ct after losing 60,000 factories under the previous 2 administrations, america gained 12,000 new factors with thousands upon thousands of factories being planned or being built. [cheers and applause]. Companies are not leaving. They are coming back to the usa. [cheers and applause]. Everybody wants to be where the actions and the United States of america is the place where the actions. Is. [cheers and applause]. One of the biggest promises i made to the American People was to deplace the disastrous nafta trade deal. [cheers and applause]. In fact, unfair trade is the single biggest reason i decided to run for president. Under nafta, politicians claimed to reduce nafta and nothing happened. Like those before me, i keep my promises. We did our job. [cheers and applause] 6 days ago i replaced nafta and signed a new u. S. And mexico agreement into law. Usmca will create new high paying auto jobs and boost exports for our farmers, ranchers and factory workers. [cheers and applause]. It will also bring trade with mexico and canada to a much higher level and also to be a better degree of fairness and reciprocity. We will havels that. I say that finally because its been many, many years that we were treated fairy on trade. Barely on trade. [cheers and applause]. This is the first major trade deal in many years to earn the strong walking of americas labor unions. [cheers and applause]e] i promised our citizens i would impose tariffs to confront chinas theft upon american jobs want we signed an agreement with china to bring billion dollars into our treasure and open vast new markets for products made and grown right here in the usa. [cheers and applause]. For decades china took advantage of the United States. Now we have changed that. But at the same time, we have perhaps the best relationship we have ever had with china including with president xi. They respect what we have done because they could not really believe they were able to get away with what they were doing year after year. Decade after decade without someone if our country stepping up and saying thats enough [cheers and applause]. Now we want to rebuild our country and that is exactly what we are doing. We are rebuilding our country. As we restore American Leadership throughout the world. We are again standing up for freedom in our hemisphere. [cheers and applause]. Thats why my administration reversed the failing policies of the Previous Administration on cuba. [cheers andre applause]. We supported cuba and the nicaraguans and venezuelans to restore democracy that the United States is leading a coalition against the socialist dictator of venezuela. Nicholas maduro. [cheers and applause]. He is a tyrant who brutalizes his people. But his grip will be smashed and broken. Here this evening should brave man who carries with him the hopes and dreams of all venezuelans. Joining us in the gallery is the true president of the venezuela. Juan guaido, please take this message back to your people. [cheers and applause]. [applauding]. Thank you, mr. . President. A great honor. Thank you very much. Please take this message back that all americans are united with the venezuela people in their righteous struggle for freedom. Thank you very much, mr. President. [cheers and applause]. [applauding]. Thank you very much. Socialism destroys nations, but always remember freedom unifies the foul. The soul. [cheers and applause]. To safeguard american liberty we have invested a record breaking 2. 2trillion dollars in the United States military. [cheers and applause]. We purchased rockets and ships in every form of military equipment and its all made right here in the usa. [cheers and applause]. We are also getting our allies finally to help pay their fair share. [cheers and applause]. I have raised contributions for other nato members by more than 400billion dollars and the number of allies meeting their m minimum obligations has more than doubled. Just weeks ago for the first time sinceth president truman established the air force, more than 70 years earlier, we created a brand new branch, called the space force. Ewvery important. [cheers and applause]. In the gallery tonight we have a young gentleman. What he wants so badly. 13 years old. Ian, is an 8th grader from arizona. Y please stand up. Ian dreamed of going into space. He was the first in his class and among the youngest at an aviation academy. He aspires to go to the air force base academy and then has his high on space. He said most people look up at space. I want to look down on the world. [cheers and applause]. [laughter] [applauding]. Sitting behind ian tonight is his greatest hero of them all. Charles mcghee who was born in cleveland, ohio, one century ago. Charles is one of the last surviving Tuskeegee Air man and the first black Fighter Pilots and he happens to be ians great grandfather. [cheers and applause]. [applauding]. [cheers and applause]. Incredible story. After more than 130 combat missions in world war ii, he came back home to a country still struggling for civil rights and went on to serve america in korea and vietnam. On december 7th, charles celebrated his 100th birthday. [cheers and applause]. [applauding]. A few weeks ago i signed a bill promoting charles to Brigadier General and i pinned the star on his shoulders. Our nation salutes you. Thank you, sir. [cheers and applause]. From the pilgrims to the founders and the soldiers that valley forge and the marchers at selma and to president lincoln to reverend Martin Luther king. Americans have always rejected limits on our childrens future. Nembers of congress, we must never forget that the only victories that matter in washington are victories that deliver for the American People. [cheers and applause]. The people are the heart of our country. Their dreams are the soul of our country and their love is what powers and sustains our country. We must always remember that our job is to put america first. [cheers and applause]. B the next step forward in building an Inclusive Society is making suredi that every Young American gets a great education and the opportunity to achieve the american dream. Yet for too long countless American Children have been trapped in failing government schools. To rescue these students 18 states created School Choice inl the form of opportunity scholarships. Tens of thousands students remain on a waiting list. One is a 4th grader from philadelphia. [cheers and applause]. Her mom stephanie is a single parent and would do anything to give her daughter a better future. But last year that was put further out of reach when pennsylvanias governor vetoed to extend a better education. Stephanie, thank you very much for being here with your beautiful daughter. [cheers and applause]. I have good news for you. I am pleaseed to inform you that your long wait is over. I can proudly announce tonight that an opportunity scholarship has become available. Its going to you and you will soon be heading to the school of your choice. [cheers and applause]. Now i call on congress to give one million American Children the same opportunity just received. Pass the education freedom scholarships and opportunities act. No parent should be forced to send their child to a failing government school. [cheers and applause]. Every young person should have a safe and secure environment in which to learn and to grow. For this reason, our magnificent first lady launched the be best initiative to advance a safe, healthy, supportive and drugfree life for the next generation, on line and in school and in f our communities. Thank you, melania, for your extraordinary love and profound care for americas children. Thank you veryry much. [cheers and applause]. My administration is determined to give our citizens the opportunities they need regardless of age or background. Through our pledge to American Workers 400 companies will also provide new jobs and Education Opportunities to 15 million americans. My budget contains an exciting vision for our nations high school. Tonight i ask congress to back my plan to offer vocational and Technical Education in every Single High School in america. La [cheers and applause]. To expand equal opportunity i am proud we achieved record and permanent funding for our nations historically black colleges and universities. [cheers and applause]. A good life for American Families required the most affordable and high quality healthcare on earth. I move quickly to provide alternatives. Our new plans are up to 60 less expensive and better. [cheers and applause]. I also made a pledge to American Families. We will always protect patients with preexisting conditions. [cheers and applause]. We will always protect your medicare and we will always protect yourre social security, always. [cheers and applause]. The american patient should never be blind sided by american bills. Thats why i signed an executive order requiring price transparency. [applause] many expertses knowledge that transparency which will go into full effect at the beginning of next year will be even bigger than healthcare reform. [cheers and applause]. It will save families massive amounts of money for better care. As we work to improve Americans Healthcare there are those who wants to take away your healthcare, take away your doctor and abolish private insurance entirely. 132 lawmakers endorsed a legislation to impose a socialist take over of our healthcare. Wiping out the healthcare plans of 180 million americans. To those watching at home tonight, i want you to know, we will never let socialism destroy american healthcare. [cheers and applause]. Over 130 legislators in this chamber have endorsed legislation that will bankrupt our nation by providing free Taxpayer Funded Health Care to illegal aliens giving free care to anyone who unlaw fully crosses our boards. These proposals would raid the medicare benefits of our seniors and that our seniors depend on while acting as a powerful lure for illegal immigration. Thats what is a happening in california and other states. Their systems are totally out of control costing taxpayers vast amounts ofally money. Forcing taxpayer to play healthcare to the illegal aliens sounds fair to you, then stand with the radical left. If you stand with me to pass legislation to prohibit free government healthcare for illegal aliens. [cheers and applause]. This will be a tremendous boon to our already very strongly guarded southern border where as we speak a long, tall, and very powerful wall is being built. [cheers and applause]. We have completed 100 miles and have over 500 miles fully completed in a very short period of time. Early next year we will have substantially more than 500 miles completed. My administration is also taking on the big pharmaceutical companies. We approved a Record Number of affordable generic drugs and medicine is being approved by the fda at a faster clip than ever before. [cheers and applause] i was pleased to announce last year for the first time in 51 years, the cost of Prescription Drugs actually went down. [cheers and applause]. And working together, congress can reduce drug prices from current levels. I spoke to Chuck Grassley and others in congress to get something on drug pricing done quickly and properly. I call for Bipartisan Legislation that achieves the goal of lowering Prescription Drug prices. L get a bill on my desk and i will sign it into law immediately. [cheers and applause]. With unyielding commitment we are curving the Opioid Epidemic. Drug over dose deaths declined for the first time in nearly 30 years. [cheers and applause]. Among the states hardest hits, ohio is down 22 . Pennsylvania down 18 . Wisconsin down 10 . And we will not quit until we are have beaten the Opioid Epidemic once and for all. [applauding]. Protecting Americans Health means fighting infectious diseases. We are coordinating with the Chinese Government and working closely together on the coronavirus out break in china. My administration will take all necessary steps to safeguard our citizens from this threat. We launched ambitious new initiatives to improve care for americans with l Kidney Disease and alzheimers and those mental health. Because congress was so good to fund my request, new curious for Childhood Cancer and we will eradicate the aids epidemic in america by the end of this decade. [cheers and applause]. Almost every American Family knows the pain when a loved one is diagnosed with a serious illness. Here tonight is a special man. Beloved by millions of americans who just received a stage4 advanced cancer diagnosis. This is not good news. But what is good news he is the greatest fighter and winner that you will ever meet. Rush limbaugh thank you for your decade of tireless devotion to our country. [cheers and applause]. [cheers and applause]. And rush, in recognition of all that you have done for our nation, the millions of people a day that you speak to and that you inspire and all of the incredible work that you have done for charity, i am proud to announce tonight that you are receiving our country highest civilian honor. The president ial medal of freedom. [cheers and applause]. [applauding]. I will now ask the first lady of the United States to present you with the honor. Please. [cheers and applause]. Rush [cheers and applause]. [applauding]. [cheers and applause]. Rush and catherrine, gratulations. Thank you, catherine. As we pray for all who are sick, we know that america is constantly achieving new medical breakthroughs. In 2017 doctors at Saint Luke Hospital in kansas city delivered one of the earliest premature babies ever to survive. 21 weeks and 6 days and weighing less than a pound. Elie was a born fighter. Through the skill of her doctord and the prayers of her parents, she won the battle of life. Today she is a healthy 2yearold girl sitting with her amazing mother robin. In the gallery, we are glad to have you with us tonight. [cheers and applause]. [applauding]. Elie reminds us that every child is a miracle of life and thanks to modern medical wonders, 50 of premature baby delivered at the hospital with elie was born now survive. Its an incredible thing. Thank you very much. Our goal to be to ensure that every baby has the best chance to thrive and grow like elie. I ask congress to provide another 50million to fund Neonatal Research for americas youngest patients. [cheers and applause]. Thats why i am also calling upon members of congress to pass legislation banning the lateterm abortion of babies. [cheers and applause]. Whether we are republican, democrat or independent, surely we must all agree that every human life is a sacred gift of god as we support americas moms and dads, i signed the law providing the new parents in the federal work force paid family leave serving as a model for the rest of the country. [cheers and applause]. Now i call on congress to pass the bipartisan advancing support fores working families t extendinging family leave to mothers and fathers all across our nation. [cheers t and applause]. 40 million American Families have an extra 2,000 extra thanks to our child tax credit. [cheers and applause]. I also oversaw historic funding increasing for high quality child care helpingng states to help more children by eliminating their wait list. Altogether. [applause] i extend congress to act immediately. [cheers and applause]. To protect the environment, the United States will bring together government and private sectors to plant new trees in america and all around the world. [cheers and applause]. We must also rebuild americas infrastructure. [cheers and applause]. I ask you to pass the highway bill to invests in new bridges, roads and tunnels across our lands were i am committed to ensuring that every citizen can have access to high Speed Internet especially in rural america. [cheers and applause]. A better tomorrow for all americans also requires us to keep americaom safe. That means supporting the men and women of Law Enforcement at every level including our nations heroic ice officers. [cheers and applause]. Last year our brave ice officers arrested more than 120,000 criminals charged with burglary and sexual assaults and 2,000 murders. Tragically, there are many citizens in america where radical potician visit chosen to provide sanctuary for these criminal illegal aliens. In sanctuary cities, local officials order police to release dangerousus criminal aliens to prey on the public insteadol in sanctuary cities local officials order police to release dangerous criminal aliens instead of handing them over to ice the safely removed, 29 days ago, lillian freed by the sanctuary city of new york was charged with a brutal rape and murder of the 92yearold woman. The killer had been previously arrested for assault but under new york sanctuary policies he was set free. The city had 100 isis detainer requests. His victim would still be alive today. They passed an outrageous lot declaring their whole state to be a sanctuary for criminal Illegal Immigrants a very terrible sanctuary with catastrophic results. Here is just one tragic example. In december of 2018 California Police detained an illegal alien with 5 prior arrests including convictions for robbery and assault. It is required by california sanctuary law local authorities released him. Days later the criminal alien went on a gruesome spree of deadly violence. Youve viciously shot one man going about his daily work, he approached the woman sitting in her car and shot her in the arm and in the chest, walked into a Convenience Store and fired his weapon, hijacked the truck and smashed into vehicles critically injuring innocent victims was one of the victims is a terrible terrible situation, died, 51yearold american named rocky jones. Rocky was at a gas station when this file, fired eight bullets at him at close range murdering him in cold blood. Rocky left behind a devoted family including his brothers who loved him more than anything else in the world. One of his grieving brothers is with us tonight, jody, would you please stand, thank you. Jody, our hearts weep for your loss and we will not rest until you have justice. Senator tom tillis has introduced legislation to allow americans like judy to sue sanctuary cities and states when a loved one is hurt or killed as a result of these deadly practices. [applause] i ask congress to pass the justice for victims of sanctuary cities act immediately. The United States of america should be a sanctuary for lawabiding americans, not criminal aliens. [applause] in the last three years ice has arrested over 5000 wicked human traffickers and i have seemed 9 pieces of legislation to stamp out the menace of Human Trafficking domestically and all around the globe. My administration has undertaken an unprecedented effort to secure the southern border of the United States. Before i came into office if you showed up illegally on the southern border and were arrested you were simply released and allowed into our country never to be seen again. My administration has ended catch and release. If you come illegally you will now be promptly removed from our country. Very importantly we entered into a historic Cooperation Agreement with the governments of mexico, honduras, el salvador and guatemala. As a result of our unprecedented efforts illegal crossings are down 75 since may dropping eight straight month in a row. And as the wall rapidly goes up drug seizures rise and the border crossings are going down and going down very rapidly. Last year i traveled to the border in texas and met chief patrol agent role ortiz. Over the last 24 months agent ortiz and his team have seized more than 200,000 pounds of force in this narcotics, arrested more than 3000 human smugglers and rescued more than 2000 migrants, days ago, agent ortiz was promoted to deputy chief of Border Patrol and he joins us tonight, chief ortiz, please stand. A grateful nation thanks you and all the heroes of Border Patrol and ice, thank you very much. To build on these historic gains we are working on legislation to replace our outdated and randomized immigration system with one based on merit, welcoming those who follow the rules, contribute to our economy, support themselves financially and uphold our values. [applause] with every action my administration has restored rule of law and reasserting the culture of american freedom. [applause] working with Senate Majority leader mitch mcconnell, thank you, mitch. And his colleagues in the senate we have confirmed a Record Number of 187 new federal judges to uphold our constitution is written. This includes two new brilliant Supreme Court justices, neil gorsuch and brett kavanaugh. [applause] and we have many in the pipeline. My administration is defending religious liberty and that includes the constitutional right to pray in public schools. In america we dont punish prayer, we dont tear down crosses, we dont ban symbols of faith, we dont muscle preachers and pastors, we celebrate faith, we cherish religion, we lift our voices in prayer and we raise our sites to the glory of god just as we believe in the First Amendment we also believe in another constitutional right that is under siege all across our country. So long as i am president i will always protect your Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. [applause] reaffirming our heritage as a free nation we must remember that america has always been the frontier nation, now we must embrace the next frontier. Americas manifest destiny in the stars. Im asking congress to fully fund the Artemis Program to ensure the next man in the first woman on the moon will be american astronauts using this as a launching pad to ensure that america is the first nation to plant its flag on mars. My administration is also strongly descending our National Security and combating radical islamic terrorism. Last week i announced a groundbreaking plan for a peace between israel and the palestinians recognizing all past attempts have failed we must be determined and creative to stabilize the region and give millions of young people the chance to realize a better future. Three years ago the barbarians of ice is held over 20,000 square miles of territory in iraq and syria. Today the isis territorial caliphate has been 100 destroyed and the founder and leader of isis, the bloodthirsty killer known as our baghdadi is dead. [applause] we are joined this evening by carl and marcia mueller. After graduating from college their beautiful daughter kayla became a humanitarian aid worker. She once wrote some people find god in church, some people find god in nature, some people find god in love. I find god in suffering. I have known for some time what my lifes work is. Using my hands as tools to relieve suffering. In 2013 while caring for suffering civilians interior in syria she was enslaved by isis and kept as a prisoner of our baghdadi himself. After more than 500 horrifying days of captivity, al baghdadi murdered young beautiful kayla. She was just 26 years old. On the night us forces ended our baghdadis miserable life the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, general mark millie, received a call in the situation room, he was still brave men of elite special forces team that so perfectly carried out the operation had given their mission a name, task force 814. It was a reference to a special day, august 14th, kaylas birthday. Carl and marcia, americas warriors, never forgot kayla and neither will we. [applause] present at thes men and women in uniform demonstrate the infinite depth of love that dwells in the human heart. One of these american heroes was Army Staff Sergeant christopher hate. On his second deployment to iraq in 2008, sergeant hate brought a letter to his oneyearold son, gage, i will be with you again, he wrote, i will teach you to ride your first bike, build your first sandbox, watch you play sports and see you have kids also. I love you, son, take care of your mother. I am always with you, daddy. On Easter Sunday of 2008 chris was on patrol in baghdad when his bradley fighting vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb. That night he made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Sergeant haig now rest in eternal glory in arlington and his wife, kelly, is in the gallery tonight joined by their son who is now a 13yearold and doing very well. Chris will live in our hearts forever, he is looking down on you now, thank you. [applause] thank you very much, thank you both very much. The terrorists responsible for killing sergeant haig was soleimani. He was the Iranian Regimes most ruthless butcher, a monster who murdered and wounded thousands of american servicemembers in iraq. Is the worlds top terrace, soleimani orchestrated the deaths of countless men, women and children, he directed an assault and went on to assault us forces in iraq, was actively planning new attacks, we hit him very hard and that is why last month at my direction the us military executed a flawless precision strike that killed soleimani and ended his reign of terror forever. [applause] our message to the terrorists is clear, you will never escape american justice. If you attack our citizens you forfeit your life. [applause] in recent months we have seen proud iranians raise their voices against their oppressors, the Iranian Regime must abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons, stop spreading terror, death and destruction and start working for the good of its own people. Because of our powerful sanctions the iranian economy is doing very very poorly. We can help them make a very good and short time recovery. It could all go very quickly but perhaps they are too prouder too foolish to ask for that help. We are here, lets see which road they choose. It is totally up to them. As we defend american lives we are working to end americas wars in the middle east. In afghanistan, determination and valor of our war fighters has allowed us to make tremendous progress and peace talks are now underway. Im not looking to kill hundreds of thousands of people in afghanistan many of them totally innocent. It is also not our function to serve other nations as Law Enforcement agencies. These are war fighters we have, the best in the world and they want to fight to win or not fight at all. We are working to finally end americas longest war and bring our troops back home. [applause] war places a heavy burden in our nations extra ordinary military families especially spouses like amy williams from fort bragg North Carolina and her two children, 6yearold iliana and 3yearold ron. Amy works countless hours helping other military families. As the world bears witness tonight, america is a land of heroes, a place where greatness is born, destinies are forged and legends come to life. This is the home of Thomas Edison and teddy roosevelt, many great generals including washington, pershing, patton and macarthur. This is the home of abraham lincoln, frederick douglass, amelia ehrhardt, harriet tubman, the wright brothers, Neil Armstrong and so many more. This is a country where children learn names like wyatt earp, Davy Crockett and annie oakley. This is the place where the pilgrims landed at plymouth and where texas patriots made their last stand at the alamo. [applause] the beautiful beautiful alamo. The american nation was carved out of the vast frontier by the toughest, strongest, fiercest and most determined men and women ever to walk on the face of the earth. Our ancestors braved the unknown, tamed the wilderness, settled the wild west, lifted millions from poverty, disease, and hunger, vanquished tyranny and fascism, ushered the world to new heights of science and medicine, laid down the railroads, dug out the canals, raised up the skyscrapers and ladies and gentlemen, our ancestors built the most exceptional republic ever to exist in all of Human History and we are making it greater than ever before. [applause] this is our glorious, magnificent inheritance. We are americans, we are pioneers, we are the pathfinders, we settle the new world, we built the modern world and we changed history forever by embracing the Eternal Truth that everyone is made equal by the hand of almighty god. America is the place where anything can happen, america is the place where anyone can rise and here on this land, on this soil, on this continent, the most incredible dreams come true. This nation is our canvas and this country is our masterpiece. We look at tomorrow and see unlimited frontiers just waiting to be explored. Our brightest discoveries are not yet known. Are most thrilling stories are not yet told. Our grandest journeys are not yet made. The american age, the american epic, the american adventure has only just begun. Our spirit is still young, the sun is still rising. Gots grace is still shining and, my fellow americans, the best is yet to come. Thank you, god bless you and god bless america. Shannon donald trump in his third address to the nation tonight just short of about an hour and a half as we watch the interaction it comes in the middle of a huge week for the president as he hits his highest Approval Ratings in gallup today. Nancy pelosi ripped up the speech behind the president as he is still there. I missed that moment. That is something. That is something and an interesting moment like that on the way in which i was about to mention. He is on the eve of his likely acquittal on the senate tomorrow but the speech began with an awkward moment, the speaker extended her hand after the transfer of the speech and he appeared to turn away. She sat stonefaced throughout most of the speech but the president began by lauding the success of the economy is the Great American comeback as he called it saying the use of economic decay are over citing strong jobs and numbers and trade deals as he comes through shaking hands and getting pats on the back. A lot of moving moments, different aspects of the president s policies and initiatives, in a surprise he introduced the venezuelan opposition leader, the true legitimate president of venezuela, president maduro is a tyrant, a socialism, not to the coming elections of the tendencies of bernie sanders, freedom unifies the soul and socialism destroys nations, and young man his grandfather resonances kiki air force and that was a moving moment as well. Quite a few moving moments. There was the handshake moment and also the introduction, the intro of my high honor and distinct privilege to present the president of the United States, just said the president of the United States, an hour and 17 minutes, a lot of those interruptions fell into the Standard Party line, half the Chamber Standing up, big bipartisan moments, juan guido the aspiring astronaut and his greatgrandfather, the newly promoted Brigadier General charles mcgee, the last of the tuskegee airmen, it was partisan applause but Rush Limbaugh fighting lung cancer receiving the president ial medal of freedom in that chamber from the first lady but by far the most powerful moment had to be honoring the two People Killed by the two terrorists, without baghdadi and soleimani, emotional moments with the family. You have to think about this. All this happens, the highest Approval Rating of his presidency, 49 , 10 , 94 approval among republicans and the u. S. Senate to convict the president and his impeachment file. And brit hume, chris wallace, host of fox news sunday, and dana perino, host of the daily briefing. I thought the president renewed and furthered a tradition that began in 1982 when Ronald Reagan recognized the guy who saved a womans life in the Potomac River after a plane crash. One test after another, the president bringing in people, anybody would find a reason to cheer and every president who has done this supposed to associate himself with them and the people he chose tonight were uniquely wellsuited to do that and i think the president gained something from that and automatically would because it sets traps for his critics, they might not achieve agree with achievements but hard not to choose these people he recognized tonight. The theme of the speech was the Great American comeback, a great way to build a speech around you could take those guests, they work very hard to find, it fit each of those moments which he asked congress to do a lot of things, they wont do a lot of people call them the donothing congress. From the first cheers, chants from republicans of 4 more years this was the first major speech of the donald trump reelection campaign, very effective speech, you could see all that hes going to have to campaign on, long list of economic accomplishments, long list of National Security, fighting the war on terror, reached out to his conservative base with a strong statement, prolife feelings and the honoring of Rush Limbaugh who is a conservative icon, the most interesting part of the speech and contentious was on healthcare where the president was arguing that he is going to be the person who saves healthcare, the democrats would destroy it with a socialist takeover, democrats won in 2018 with that and think they will do well again in 2020, this will be the main battleground of this campaign. A quick break, we would be back with more on the democratic response after a quick break bret welcome back to a state of the union coverage. Mike emanuel joins us with a preview of what to expect from the democratic response tonight. Good evening. Gretchen whitmers, the 48yearold governor of michigan, clearly a battleground state. Issues Americans Care about such as clean Drinking Water and safe roads. She plans to go directly at the president s economic argument. It doesnt matter what the president says about the stock market. What matters is that millions of People Struggle to get by or dont have enough money at the end of the month after paying for transportation, stu it doesnt matter what the president says about the stock market, what matters is millions of People Struggle to get by, dont have enough money at the end of the month after paying for transportation, Student Loans or Prescription Drugs, a potentially rising star will speak at east lansing a school where her daughters go to school and potentially a rising star on the national stage, we will see how it goes tonight. In lansing, michigan, the democratic response to the state of the union. We are here today with families and parents, teachers and students. I want to thank you all for coming but tonight i want to talk to those of you watching at home. Ive made by i would need more than 10 minutes to respond to with the president just said so instead of talking about what he is saying im going to highlight what democrats are doing. After all you can listen to what someone says but to know the truth, watch what they do. Michigan is no different from americans everywhere. With a family and want a good life today and a better life tomorrow for our kids. We work hard and expect our government to work hard for us as well. We have grit and value loyalty and we root for the detroit lions. We and all americans might be wary of todays politics but we must stay engaged. Our country, our democracy, our future demand it. We are capable of great things when we work together. We cannot forget that despite the dishonesty and division of the last few years and that we heard tonight from the president of the United States, together we have boundless potential and Young Americans are proving that every day by taking action. That is what i want to focus on tonight. A 13yearold who lives in michigan was covered in potholes they were ankledeep and he got tired of waiting for them to get fixed so he grabbed a shovel and a bucket of dirt and filled them in himself. During my Campaign People told me to fix the damn roads because blown tires and broken windshields are downright dangerous, and car repairs take money for rent, child care, groceries, and we, the democrats are doing something about it. In illinois, the governor passed a multibilliondollar plan to rebuild roads and bridges. Governor phil murphy is displacing lead pipes in new jersey. All across the country Democratic Leaders are rebuilding bridges, fixing roads, expanding broadband and cleaning up Drinking Water. Everyone in this country benefits when we invest in infrastructure. Congressional democrats have presented proposals to keep us moving forward but donald trump and republicans in the senate are blocking the path. When it comes to infrastructure, he did more with a shovel and a pile of dirt and republicans in the oval office in the u. S. Senate. Bullying people on twitter doesnt fix bridges, it burns them. Energy should be used to solve problems. It is true for healthcare too. For me, for so many Americans Healthcare is personal, not political. When i was 30 i became a member of the Sandwich Generation meaning i was sandwiched between two generations of my own family for whom i was primary caregiver, holding down a new job, caring for my newborn daughter and my mom at the end of her brain cancer battle. I was up all night with the baby and during the day when they wrongly denied her coverage for chemotherapy it was hard. Exposed the harsh realities of our workplaces, our Healthcare System and our child care system and it changed me. I lost patience for people who are just talk and no action. As a state senator i worked with a republican governor and legislature to expand Health Care Coverage to 680,000 michiganers adobe formal correct, today democrats from maine to montana are expanding coverage and lowering costs. And kansas Governor Laura Kelly is working across the aisle to bring medicaid coverage to tens of thousands. In new mexico governor michelle berson enshrined aca protections into law. Every democrat running for president has a plan to expand health care for all americans. Every one of them has supported the Affordable Care act with coverage for people with preexisting conditions. They may have different plans but the goal is the same. Donald trump sadly has a different plan. He is asking the courts to replace lifesaving protections away. It is pretty simple. Democrats are trying to make your healthcare better, republicans in washington are trying to take it away. Think about it like 70yearold blake carol from idaho who organized a fundraiser to pay for his moms cancer treatments are 19yearold ebony myers housel are to pay for her own rare genetic disorder treatment. No one should have to crowd sourced their healthcare, not in america. But the reality is, not everyone in america has a job with healthcare and benefits. Many have jobs that dont even pay enough to cover their monthly expenses, doesnt matter what the president says about the stock market, what matters is millions struggle to get by or dont have enough money after paying for transportation, Student Loans or Prescription Drugs. American workers are hurting. In my own state, in wisconsin, in ohio, pennsylvania and all of the country wages have stagnated while ceo pay has skyrocketed. When the president says the economy is strong my question is strong for whom . Strong for the wealthy who are reaping rewards from tax cuts they dont need . The American Economy needs to be a different kind of strong, strong for the Science Teacher spending her own money to buy supplies for question, strong for the single mom picking up extra hours so she can afford her daughters soccer plates. Strong for the Small Business owner who has to make payroll at the end of the month. Michigan invented the middle class, so we know if the economy doesnt work for working people, it just doesnt work. Who fights for hardworking americans . Democrats do . In the u. S. House, nancy pelosi and democrats passed a landmark bill on equal pay. Another bill that gets 30 million americans are raised by increasing the minimum wage and groundbreaking legislation to finally get medicare, the power to negotiate lower drug prices for americas seniors and families. Three bills, 275 other bipartisan bills are gathering dust on Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnells desk. Senator mcconnell, America Needs you to move those bills. Meanwhile, democrats across the country are getting things done which pennsylvania governor tom walton expanding the right to overtime pay. Michigan is too. If you are on the clock you deserve to get paid. Nevadas governor in North Carolina working to give teachers a raise and speaking of the classroom, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers increased School Funding by 65 million last year. In colorado, a free allday kindergarten. In 29 states we helped pass minimum wage hikes in july taking people out of poverty and improve lives for families. That is strength, that is action. Democracy takes action and that is why i am inspired by young people. They respond to Mass Shootings demanding policies that make schools safer, react to a world that is literally on fire, to push leaders to finally take action on climate change. They take on a road filled with potholes with a shovel and some dirt. He gives me confidence in our future and it is why sometimes it feels like they are the adults in the room. It shouldnt have to be that way. It is not a mess to clean up. It is hours. The choices we make today create a reality tomorrow. Young people, i am talking to you and your parents and grandparents, democrats want safe schools, we want everyone to have a path to a good life with through a union apprenticeship, community college, 4year University Without drowning in debt. We want your water to be clean. We want you to love who you love and live authentically as your true self and we want women to have autonomy over our bodies, we want everyone counted. 2020 is a big year. The year my daughter sherry will graduate from high school. And she will cast her first ballot along with millions of Young Americans, the two things are connected because walking across the graduation stage is as important as walking into the voting booth for the first time. Her future, all our kids futures will be determined not just by their dreams but by our actions. As we witness the impeachment process in washington there are some things each of us no matter our party should demand, the truth matters. Facts matter, no one should be above the law. It is not what those senators say. Tomorrow it is about what we do that matters. Remember. Listen to what people say about watch what they do. It is time for action. Generations of americans are counting on us. Lets not let them down. Thank you for listening, god bless america, good night. The great state of michigan in front of a crowd, this is a challenge for the democratic or republican response to the state of the Union Address. They had a crowd because we have seen efforts without a crowd that sometimes seem stilted or dont come off, the weight of a grand event like the state of the Union Address on the floor of the house chamber. She was talking about big issues democrats are fighting over, saying they could be better at healthcare, infrastructure and taking care of people like she sees in the state of michigan. He is a rising star in the Democratic Party who gets a lot of attention, talks about potholes, fix the damn roads was her slogan when she ran for governor, she has been in office 13 months, we will keep an eye on her. A tough job to do that rebuttal because you dont have the grandest surroundings of the house chamber. Lets get to our panel, the interesting things that happened at the end of the night, byron york, chief Political Correspondent of the Washington Examiner and juan williams, columnist for the hill. Lets start with a couple moments between nancy pelosi and the president of the first one we have is when he entered the chamber and handed her the speech which is tradition and there was a missed handshake. Watch this. To be fair he might not have seen the outreach but she clearly reached her hand out at that moment but the second moment. At the end of the speech there is this. God bless america, thank you very much. He made quite a show of standing up straight and tall and ripping those papers quite intentionally. Your thoughts on this . We live in a time of great Political Polarization and you heard the governor a moment ago speak about dishonesty and division in our country when she was talking about people who get something done versus people who just utter words and rhetoric. When i was watching tonight what struck me, picking up on the idea this is the start of the president s campaign, he was less about carnage and vision and much more, seems to me in a lowkey address for him talking about compassion. I specifically noticed how often he was directing his comments, even the people in the gallery to black america. Think of the young woman who will get the opportunity scholarship, the general and the young man in the space force, general now Brigadier General today and you think about the promise of more money for historically black colleges and university, he was trying to speak directly to some of the people in minority america who may have been turned off to him and he is trying to limit that kind of opposition going forward. Rob also, Justice Reform, the ad during the super bowl pointing that out, the First Step Act and perhaps an effort to outreach to some of these africanamerican communities to say Democratic Leadership hasnt done what you think it should have done, give me a try. Your thoughts on the speech and the contrast . It was a surreal evening. Impeachment was the elephant in the room a lot of the time, the president never said a word about it but it was clear he and the speaker of the house hate each other. It was an odd scene, the governor brought up the fact the senate is voting on it tomorrow and also took a few shots at the president saying bullying people doesnt fix bridges, it burns them. There was a lot of underlying hostility but also to connect to something brett said a while ago, the president took the set pieces, created these touching set pieces and took them one step farther than previous addresses, that Rush Limbaugh is there, lets present him the medal of freedom right there, tell the young girl she has got the scholarship, produce the young familys father home from the war. It was an extraordinary scene and extraordinary show at the same time. The origins of this bringing someone into the room and celebrating them and it has become almost the meat of thesees, the bridge to get the policy idea along the way and the example, how effective was that tonight and do you think the president , if there was any effort to bring people together after the Impeachment Vote that will happen tomorrow it doesnt look like that is the direction were headed from the tension we saw in that room. How about right behind him . Talk about policy ripping up the speech. I was struck by how Many Democrats chose not to attend and brett hume, bret baer and i have set there sometimes and talked about people who shake hands as the president comes in the chambers, tonight you didnt see a lot of those house members, tonight look like a gop rally and chants of four more years. I thought to myself this is more divided than we are accustomed to see even when you have a president who is not popular when the president makes an effort to try to say i am lowering the temperature in the speech it is an indication that he believes the road to higher Approval Ratings and reelection comes from saying to the American People i can be more president ial. I dont always have to be assertive or belligerent or bullying and especially white suburban women, that i can reach out to minority communities, i can be open and more compassionate and that is the message he wanted to send tonight. The fact that he didnt mention impeachment was in and of itself a moment. The fact that he is going to be acquitted tomorrow, he hasnt held back his thoughts most times. Final thoughts when we come back. Im thrilled to inform you your husband is back from deployment. He is with us tonight and we couldnt keep him waiting any longer. You are so cute but one thing we could both agree on was getting geico to help with homeowners insurance. Yeah, it was really easy and we saved a bunch of money. Oh, you got it. You are such a smart bear call geico and see how easy saving on homeowners and condo insurance can be. Well now theres score , time. From force factor, enin. To rev your libido and maximize physical response. Its no wonder walmart offers score in more locations than any other performance enhancer. Unleash your potential in the bedroom, with score . You ripped the speech up. What the party is trying to do. The courteous thing to do. Why did europe up the speech, it was the courteous thing to do considering the alternatives. I dont know what to say about that. An interesting question. She did that so conspicuously a gesture of solidarity with so many in her party who love this president or is she genuinely perpetually frustrated and enraged by this guy who she thinks is unworthy of the office, who couldnt possibly succeed in it, is worthy of impeachment and here he is tonight, Approval Rating on the rise, economy booming of all the things he said in the speech and she has to listen to that inking all along that he doesnt deserve to be there and she shouldnt have to be sitting there while he is there with head up and banners like a settlement of rage. You attended the prebubble. Ripping up the speech a couple hours ago. I have been to a lot of these where congressional leaders of one party talk about the president of the other party and i have never seen as visceral and emotional a reaction or sense of disapproval of the president of the opposing party as i saw today, somewhat from chuck schumer, much more from nancy pelosi. At one point asking could you work with this president , anything you could work on and she expressed again her strong disapproval of the president and then said he is not that important to pass up an opportunity to lower drug prices or build infrastructure so she was in effect saying there are some things we will talk about and hold our nose and deal with them. Think about situations that bring her to this frustration point the Iowa Caucuses last night, the beginning of the partys president ial run which did not go well. She didnt want to do impeachment, too divisive and got stuck with it, and he has the highest approval numbers he has had a long time. Everything is frustrating to this extent. She could have had the upper hand a little bit. And he didnt see me but had the upper hand. There were names of people who died, american citizens who died and super unsophisticated and dont like her and when she rips it up, throw frustration to her caucus because she looks at them. Here we are, the wind at his back and the choice between him and his great economy and the switch cant get our act together. Chuck schumer doesnt want to be the president s speech is more like a trump rally than a speech a true leader would give. It was undignified, highly partisan he says. Really amazing. It was amazing as we heard trump be all those things, the speech really was. Wasnt at one of his better speeches . Most observers would have to say yes. Americans, pinus, pathfinders, settled in the world, built the modern world, embraced the Eternal Truth that everyone is made equal, there is a lot of very unifying rhetoric in this speech. What democrats did in the prebubble was he is going to have a nice but it is what he does the other 364 or 365 days of the year and they were arguing youve got to see what he actually does. When they put up the budget, how does he govern. He has joined the lawsuit to try to get obamacare. They are saying this rhetoric and conciliatory tone is not who he is. He says we are going to give them this night, they didnt do that. A lot of things he wants congress to pass i think democrats want, child care, lower Prescription Drugs, these are things that are not your typical limited government type conservative speech, it was giving them what they want. Speech this is the beginning of the 2020 race and we are seeing it shape up, where lines are drawn, we dont know the Democrat Part of the equation. Cant have been far from policy and schumers mind the party and iowa had a terrible night last night and today 2 after iowa we dont know what the vote tally is. I asked Speaker Pelosi about that and the republican argument, these guys want to run healthcare, she really got upset at that and said those are republican talking points. Thank you very much. Thanks for joining us for special coverage of the state of the Union Address and the democratic response. We will cover what comes next in washington on special report. 7 00 pm eastern, stay with us.
