Program, to determine whether the program should continue and if it shouldnt continue how to wind it down. In the meantime, the department of Homeland Security will not be taking new initial applications for new Daca Recipients. The renewal for the daca program will be done on a case by case basis and the period of renewal will be reduced from two years to one year and unless its extraordinary circumstances, current Daca Recipients will not be able to leave the country. When the president first heard about the Supreme Court decision regarding daca he suggested that he was going to implement a fix that may include a path to citizenship for current Daca Recipients. I asked him about that at the briefing a short time ago. Listen here. We are going to make daca happy and the daca people and representatives happy and were also going to end up with a fantastic meritbased immigration system. John one of the other big topics at the briefing this afternoon, hydroxychloroquin back in the news after the president last night retweeted a tweet critical of dr. Anthony fauci claiming that he had misled the nation about the effectiveness of hydroxychloroquin. This tweet suggesting it was more effective than what the National Institutes other Research Organizations and dr. Fauci had been saying about it, dr. Fauci responding this morning on good morning america. Lin here. Ill continue to do my job no matter what comes out because were in the middle of a crisis with regard to an epidemic. A pandemic. This is what i do. This is what i have been trained for my entire professional life and ill continue to do it. John at briefing this afternoon President Trump saying its possible that hydroxychloroquin combined could be an early stage treatment also lamenting why a recent a. P. Poll showed that dr. Fauci had higher ratings than the president did. Lin on his response. Hes got this high aest r Approval Rating. Why dont i have a high Approval Rating and the administration with regard to the virus. John the heals act as the Senate Republicans roll out their program, President Trump said there are things about it he likes, some things about it he does not like but its certain that democrats do not like the provision on Unemployment Insurance which reduces the plus up which is currently at 600 a week down to 200 a week. Lish listen to what Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer said about it this afternoon. People cant feed their kids, people are losing their homes, they get kicked out from their apartments, Small Business going under and the republican responsibilities let them eat cake. John negotiations under way on capitol hill, Steve Mnuchin meeting today, a tough lift, shannon, they seem to be so far apart in terms of money and how that money is divvied up i think it would be a miracle if they can get something done before some of this runs out. They may have to do it piecemeal because issue of course that Unemployment Insurance which runs out at the end of this month, something has to be done about that or there will be a lot of people who dont have money to buy anything. Shannon. Both sides suggesting there is not a lot of progress today. John roberts at the white house. Attorney general barr says violent rioters and anarchists have hijacked legitimate protests to wreak destruction on innocent victims, barr mounted a vigorous defense of the administrations response and his relationship with the president before an often hostile House Judiciary Committee today. Corresponde correspondent gillian turner. This is a hearing, i thought i was supposed to be the one that was to be heard. His main message was loud and clear. When it comes to delivering justice, he insists hes never done President Trumps bidding. He has told me from the start that he expects me to exercise my independent judgment. To make whatever call i think is right and that is precisely what i have done. House judiciary chairman gerry nadler, delayed by a Traffic Accident en route to the hearing set the tone for democratic attacks in his opening line. You have aided and abetted the worst failings of the president , the r this administration has twisted the department of justice into a shadow of its former self. He insisted hes never sought anything but equal justice. I agree the president friends dont deserve breaks but they also dont deserve to be treated more harshly than other people. Spying. That one word. Thats why theyre after you, mr. Attorney general, they have been attacking you ever since. Every day. Every week. For simply stating the truth. That the Obamabiden Administration spied on the Trump Campaign. Barr put a spin. The party not coming out and condemning mob violence and the attack on federal courts. He also singled out antifa for momenting violence. We are concerned about this problem metastasizing around the country. As for the deteriorations in front of the white house last month when officers forcefully removed protesters from Lafayette Square, barr defended his actions, denying it was done to give trump a photoop at a nearby church. To say this had to do with a photoop is akin to saying that we invaded the philippines in world war ii so Douglas Macarthur could walk through the surf on the beach. Looking ahead to the november election barrs he assumes russia is trying to interfere. Barr said today hes got no reason to think thats the case. Shannon. Well break it down with the panel coming up. Gillian turner coming up on capitol hill, thank you. A declassified report from the Senate Intelligence committee is revealing internal conversations about the steele dossier between the f. B. I. And c. I. A. During the writing of an Intelligence Community assessment on Russian Election interference and potential collusion between the Trump Campaign and russia. The report reinforces the deep divide regarding how much stock the Intelligence Committee put into the steele report. The head of the u. S. Park police is denying that his officers turned violently on protesters and journalists during that Lafayette Square confrontation mentioned in our last report. Gregory monahan told a House Committee today there was zero correlation between the abrupt clearing of the area and President Trumps surprise appearance shortly after. Tonight we get inside story on defending a Federal Building under attack. National correspondent William Lajeunesse shows us how officers are trying to protect Government Property and themselves in portland. This is the federal protective service. Another night of protests outside the federal courthouse in portland as officers inside give a final warning. Be unlawful assembly. Federal agents opened the courthouse doors facing a barrage of bottles and fireworks. By no means is this a peaceful protest. It starts the night off like that but eventually its taken over by violent opportunists who are using this peaceful protest to take over. After weeks of Media Coverage focusing on the protesters, fox was given a behindthescenes look at the federal agents who are defending building. Protesters call agents actions unnecessary. Excessive. And dangerous. You can see from like a cloud of smoke coming out of it. In recent days federal agents have seized molotov cocktails, bats being hockey sticks, sling shots, cans and garden sprayers filled with bleach, and urine. We are on defense. Were not out looking for trouble. If the state and the city would provide the Law Enforcement services and other jurisdictions we would have no need to have additional marshals in the courthouse. Portland mayor ted wheeler for weeks criticized the feds as a Paramilitary Force but today he called for an immediate meeting with acting Homeland Security chad wolf to consider a ceasefire. U. S. Marshal Russell Berger hocommands officers on the ground prefers cooperation to confrontation. I think that any time leaders get together and try to find solutions its a good thing. While there are encouraging signs coming out of the local naacp, the u. S. Attorneys office and city hall, there is no reason to believe that what we saw last night wont happen again tonight. Shannon. We will be watching. William, thank you. Lets get reaction to all of this from House Judiciary CommitteeRanking Member jim jordan of ohio. Congressman. Good to be with you. Good to be with you, shannon. You got attention on this hearing today for a video you ran showing some of the riots around the country, protests that have turned violent. Here is how nbc reports on it. It says the video that you played omitted images of federal Law Enforcement officers and members of the military taking aggressive action against protesters. Democrats said you didnt clear the video in advance as you should have. How do you defend it . Democrats want to censor members of the Judiciary Committee like the hard left wants to censor conservatives around the country. The video speaks for itself. The you had two reporters in the video saying these are peaceful protests while there was a building burning if the background for Goodness Sake, we wanted to make sure the American People saw what is really happening in the cities, portland, the Federal Building in portland as bill barr testified today under siege for 61 Straight Days and bill barr did a great job today, hes doing a great job as attorney general but he asked the fundamental question why wont the democrats condemn the mob, condemn the rioters, when we asked him would that Federal Building be standing today but for federal officers defending it he said no, it would not be would st. Johns church be standing today but for actions of the federal government, no, its not, thats the way americans see it, the ones who dont are democrat leaders around the country and democrat mayors. Gerry nadler had a lot to say to you and to the attorney general and he said the president is leveraging these images to try to help himself get reelected and accusing the attorney general of doing the dirty work for him. He explains. You used pepper spray and truncheons on american citizens, you did it in Lafayette Square, you expanded it to portland and youre projecting fear and violence nationwide in pursuit of obvious political objectives. Shame on you, mr. Barr. What did you make of the numerous accusations that came from democrats not just on this issue but several, the attorney general has covered and protected the president in a way they find unlawful. The attorney general is enforcing the rule of law and if democrats want to try to blame the attorney general for what is happening in democrat run cities that have been democrat run for years and years i think the last time there was an elected republican in portland was 1956, they want to try to blame the administration for that theyre just 234r0u flatout wrong, the chief of seattle who sent out a letter to the residents and Business Owners in seattle and said the city Council Passed something that doesnt allow our officers to protect you from violent crowds. Im putting you on notice. We will have to do a quote adjusted deployment which was a nice way of telling Business Owners and residents we are not going to be there carmen best, the police chief was doing what you are supposed to as a leadering trying to serve the people in her city but she had to tell them theyre tying our hands, i would like to help you but the eight democrats and one socialist on the Seattle City Council are making it tough for us to do our job. Were warning you. Thats what bill barr is criticizing, thats whats wrong and all we did was point out whats happening in so many of our major in the United States of america this kind of stuff is going on. This idea and bill barr talked about this, this idea of defunding the police is dangerous and he said that. We showed that. Thats what the focus of this hearing was about. Thats what needs to be cleaned up. Quickly, we showed a clip earlier when he said this was a hearing. I thought i was here to be heard but what any neutral observer could see when they watched today was democrats would ask questions and when he would begin explaining beyond a yes or no answer they would immediately say i reclaim my time meaning the member is the only one who could speak and attorney general couldnt. Do you think this hearing was beneficial and why do you think he decided tow walk into the situation knowing it would probably go that way . He did a great job inned spite of the fact they tried not to let him speak, you think about the hearing, the democrats wouldnt show our whole video, the democrats wouldnt let the attorney general answer questions and then they tried to stop him from taking a restroom break for Goodness Sake thats the treatment the democrats give the attorney general of the United States . It is wrong. American people saw it for what it was. They appreciate the work. I think the vast majority of the people in this country appreciate the work President Trump is doing, appreciate the work the attorney general is doing and we tried to underscore that and show that to them today. Congressman jim jordan, Ranking Member on house judiciary, were going to dig in with this with the panel. They will have lots to say. Thank you. Correspondent laura ingle shows us tonight from malverne, new york. In 2020 we are looking to pivot, this was an idea that came to us to continue the path of education and inperson instruction for our children. The idea. Set up their own small group or pod of students to continue lessons outside the regular school setting. Its a trend around the country as parents face uncertainty about whether schools will open in the fall. Theyre hiring teachers to hold miniclasses outside or at one anothers homes. Parents say its been beneficial. At the younger ages they thrive on routine and on the clam setting. A recent fox poll shows 2 3 of those surveyed want children to attend school in person while 25 would prefer to be fully remote. Another tool parents are using ton ensure kids dont fall behind is supplemental online classes. We want them engaged. With no recess this is a way to fill the time doing things they love. The u. S. Now for an examination of what then candidate donald trump promised in 2016 and how its turned out, correspondent Kristin Fisher takes a look from the white house today. Before the pandemic put a stop to the president s rallies he often delivered remarks in between banners that said promises made and promises kept. Without question the most successful and perhaps consequential promise he kept from the 2016 campaign has been to fill the judiciary with conservatives. The justices that im going to appoint will be prolife. They will have a conservative bent. In addition to Supreme Court justices neil gorsuch and brett kavanaugh, a record appointments for a first term president. Another promise kept, renegotiating the north american freetrade agreement and replacing it with the usmca. Tonight were ending the nafta ninemillimeter. The president struggled to make a freetrade deal with china. He came close with tax cuts and jobs act of 2017 and then there is his Signature Campaign issue from 2016. Another promise broken, repealing the Affordable Care act. We will do it and we will do it very quickly. President trump is still trying to keep that promise. Just last month his administration asked the Supreme Court to overturn obama care but the justices decided they will not hear those arguments until after the election. Shannon. Isnt that true . That is true. Thats exactly what he ms. Asked you to do, isnt that right . Yes. The attorney general is enforcing the rule of law and if the democrats want to blame the attorney general for what is happening in democratrun cities that have been democrat run for years and years, i think the last time there was an elected republican in portland was 1956, if they want to blame the administration for that theyre just flatout wrong. Shannon lets bring in our panel. Byron york, chief Political Correspondent of the Washington Examiner great to see all of you, i trust you had an opportunity to watch a good chunk of these hearings today so i want to got an initial reaction from you. Mark. Im reclaiming my time government for please shut up. Im going to try it with my kids. It was a disgrace. The American People saw democrats relentlessly attacking the character and the credibility of the attorney general while he sat there and tried to answer and they would cut him off and stop him from answering. You quoted one of the congressmen saying he doesnt questioning his credibility. How would he know . He didnt let him answer a question. They didnt even give him a lunch break. It was just awful. The truth is that we did learn some things and it was useful for him to sit through that because the chairman of that Committee Said just the other day that whats happening in portland is at bare minimum the American People saw a video of what was happening in portland actually happening and they saw the attorney general describing how theyre using sling shots with ball bearings that have injured officers to the bone, using kerosene filled balloons to set fires to draw them outside so they can attack them. This is an outrage and the American People need to see and hear from their government whats happening. Shannon mara, the chairman of the committee we talked about earlier, gerry nadler, said this is all happening, federal action and activity in places like portland federal courthouse he says it is all a smoke screen so the images will be out there. Here is a bit of his exchange back and forth with the attorney general on the topic. The president wants footage for his campaign ads and you appear to be serving it up to him as ordered. The protesters arent mobs, they are mothers and veterans and mayors. Federal courts are under attack. Since when is it ok to try to burn down a federal court . Is that ok now . No. The u. S. Marshal have is a duty to stop that and defend the courthouse and thats what we are doing in portland. Were not out looking for trouble. Shannon mara, there are are mothers and veterans and mayors out there but there are people who you can say are hijacking the underlying peaceful protests and turning them into something much different at the end of each night, now 60 plus nights in portland. The democrats argument is that but for the extra federal presence, Police Presence in portland the Peaceful Demonstrations would not have escalated and that the feds are kind of inciting some of this violence by being there. From the point of view of barr, and i thought he laid out his case extremely forcefully is that a Federal Building is under attack so youve got this extremely polarized view. Its the same thing with the view of the Justice Department itself from the democrats point of view barr is doing favors for trump and trumps friends, i would say this was kind of washington at its most polarized. Shannon yeah, i think people on both sides, very frustrated toward the end the attorney general chuckling and throwing up his hands, byron, this whole i reclaim my time means youre not going to answer the question weve heard that if President Trump is not reelected he may not leave the white house and agents on the street is a test run for martial law so he can hold onto the white house, here is more about the 2020 election and warole the attorney general would play if it got ugly. As attorney general attorney general of the United States do you believe that this 2020 president ial election will be rigged . I have no reason to think it will be. Do you believe as attorney general of the United States that mailin voting will lead to massive voter fraud . I think there is a high risk it will. Shannon byron, what do you make of this thread we have seen played out the last couple of weeks and today as well about the 2020 election and the president refusing to leave if he doesnt win . This has been a democratic talking point in recent days. It was a democratic talking point in 2016 by the way when donald trump was a private citizen running for president , there was talk about him somehow not accepting the results had he lost, but he won, but we heard a lot about this and the issue is that the parties seem to have just divided over this issue of voting by mail, and attorney general barr was pretty skeptical about that and believed that it does have the potential for fraud and also a bigger thing, even if there were absolutely zero fraud, weve had a few Congressional Elections in new york that are still undecided because they have been having massive problems with counting and seeing which mailin ballots are legitimate. I mean, this is an enormous problem and these are in congressional districts in new york state. Put that in a national context, in a president ial election where there is far, far more voting by mail than there ever has been before and there could be enormous problems. We might not find out who actually won for weeks afterwards. Meanwhile, there is just terrible partisan wrangling going on a la bush v. Gore so there are really bad scenarios for voting by mail, and the attorney general simply recognized some of those. Shannon when you say weeks, byron, we all might have to stock up on the antacids as r if it comes to that. Stick around. President trump next up takes on dr. Birx and others who are terrific have recommended. Hes got high Approval Ratings, nobody likes me. It can only be my personality. Thats all. Shannon a little bit of levity from the president there today. Were back with our panel, and mara, i want to start with you. There has been so much about trying to pit dr. Fauci against President Trump and yet when confronted face to face theyll say we get along fine. Everything is great. I think so much of him. Its wonderful. Yet there is this constant attempt to drive a wedge between the two of. What do you make of it . I think its in neither of their interests to have a wedge driven between the two. Dr. Fauci is the Good Housekeeping seal of approval on this pandemic and he has been all along. There have been times when the president was more interested in opening the economy he wasnt meeting with him as much or wasnt having him to the briefings but whats mystifying to me is why does President Trump continue to retweet disparaging comments about dr. Fauci . That i just dont understand. I dont think its in his interests to undermine the credibility of dr. Fauci. Shannon they seem to have a very complex relationship, those two. Meanwhile theyre talking about on capitol hill putting together more relief funding, a fight over the plus for unemployment benefits. Byron, here is what former senator phil gramm who is known for crunching the numbers, here is what he had to say. Weve spent a massive amount of money and the bill is really yet to come due. I will believe that we would be blessed if we didnt see another bill passed here and we simply went back and reprogrammed some of the 1. 2 trillion. Shannon byron, no bill better than another big deal . What do you think . Thats phil gramms view and certainly people who need more unemployment aid would certainly dils agree with that. On the other hand when the two sides are trillions of dollars apart thats a real problem and republicans are not united on this. I want to say one thing about this News Conference. The president began by announcing a loan to kodak, the Photography Company to start making pharmaceuticals the Building Blocks of generic drugs in part to address our scandalous reliance on chinaa. I think in the last year or on china. In the last year or two because of the trade negotiations people learned how dependent the u. S. Is on china for pharmaceuticals. 97 come from china. Any move to improve that, and the president started his News Conference off by announcing that would be a good thing. Shannon the president announced on his plans for the r. N. C. , where he would deliver his acceptance speech. He used a News Conference last week to say it wouldnt play out like in the past with the big events in florida, tonight theyre getting word there are more than 100 Police Agents so agencies who say they will not live up to agreements with the d. N. C. Because they have been told the local directives are they cannot use pepper spray or teargas or crowd control theyve used in the past or more than 100 Police Agencies saying theyre not going to send officers in to assist with this. They do not think they can do so safely. Marc . They might as well move it to chicago and redo 1968. This is what happens when you defund the police. The police do not come. Im not surprised that Police Agencies are upset and are saying theyre not going to support the conventions. We dont know how the conventions are going to play out, because we dont know how the pandemic is doing, when he announced it was going to florida it was great and now its not great, he was smart to keep his powder dry and say well announce it soon if the plan for the convention speech. Shannon do you think the d. N. C. Can proceed if theyve lost 100 plus Police Agencies . We have been to conventions even though these are probably going to be scaled down it is a logistical and security very tight puzzle thats got to work exactly right because of all the people that are there and high profiles to protect. What im unclear on is how many highprofile people will be there. The d. N. C. Has been scaling back, scaling back, a couple hundred people, we know that joe biden was planning to accept the nomination in milwaukee but im wondering what are the protesters going to be protesting if this thing is almost completely virtual, so that is unclear to me but the fact that these conventions are supposed to start on august 17th for the democrats and august 24th for the republicans thats not very far away and they still dont know exactly what theyre going to be like. Only a few hundred people at the courthouse in portland. Shannon thats true. Byron. My favorite moment of the News Conference, President Trump was asked you are going to accept the nomination on thursday night of the convention week. Where are you going to be . He said well be announcing that soon. Anybody has any ideas . Thats the way its going. Shannon that is what he said. Were standing by for all of that and more. Panel, stick around.
