And in minneapolis the family of george floyd sues Police Officers and the city over the death that they say as a result of a philosophy of killapology. All this comes as President Trump makes the restoration of law and order a key plank of his legislation platform. Kristin fisher stresses off from the north line of the atomic lawn of the white house. President trump is pushing issues that are central to his reelection campaign. Expediting Infrastructure Projects and battleground of georgia and threatening federal intervention in democrat run cities that are seen big spikes in violence. President trump next week i think we will have a very exciting News Conference because we will be talking about some of the cities where the democrats running them have lost control of the city. President trump flanked by his attorney general and top Law Enforcement officials for a briefing about the administrations efforts to dismantle the ms13 game. We will seek the Death Penalty against alexi sands who is a leader in the east Eastern District of new york. New york will likely be mentioned against next weeks News Conference. And if pressed people make good on his threat to take over cities that he thinks are out of control. Speak to that something at this point i think the American People want to see. From the oval office to battleground georgia were President Trump promises to expedite Infrastructure Projects by cutting red tape and removing legislation. President trump biden is happy to tie up projects in red tape and we want to get things built. Georgia is also home for the cdc, center for Disease Control, headquarters for the nations Coronavirus Response but the white house is now shifting one of its key responsibilities, coronavirus Data Collection and dissemination to the department of health and human services. Critics say its just the latest offered by the white house to undercut the agency but President Trump doesnt see it that way. It didnt change for me, they are all on the same team, including dr. Fauci. I have a very Good Relationship with dr. Fauci. Today the tense relationship between dr. Anthony fauci and another member of the Current Affairs task force, Peter Navarro, burst into the open when navarro wrote an oped entitled Anthony Fauci has been wrong about everything ive interacted with him on. If you talk to other people in the white house they realize i was a major mistake on their part because it doesnt do anything but reflect poorly on them. I cant explain Peter Navarro companies in the world by himself so i dont even want to go there. But President Trump did go there and said navarro shouldnt have written the oped. Speak to made a statement represented to himself and he shouldnt be doing that. Today the Vice President also came to dr. Faucis defense calling him a valued member of the Coronavirus Task force, and in fact the Vice President even tweeted a photo of dr. Fauci here at the white house and the situation room for a meeting of the task force, just today. Bret Kristin Fisher live on the north wind. As we mentioned before, what was supposed to be a peaceful show of support for police in new york city turned ugly and violent today. Correspondent Aishah Hasnie is there tonight. Good evening. 37 protesters were arrested today amid some violent clashes with police and it all started on the Brooklyn Bridge this morning. Some alarming video here shows a protesters striking nypd officers with a bar as a pro police march made up of primarily churchgoers and a Law Enforcement unions was just getting underway. Four officers suffered serious injuries and achieve a Department Terry Monahan who is the highestranking uniformed officer suffered minor hand injuries. But a counter protest organizer tells me at least one person on his side was hurt, too. We want to talk about our issues in complex and nuanced ways as we always do. What we were met with was once our folks were even o on the pedestrian walk on the bridge, police went in with riot gear and arrested everyone. This follows yet another night of gun violence in the city, one dead and five hurt today in brooklyn. Today the mayor launched a brooklyn Crime Prevention plan and also introduced a controversial choke hold ban into law. The mayor has blamed coronavirus for the rising gun violence and one Police Union President calls him a liar. The criminals know we are at out there taking the guns and thats what youre seeing the violence. The cops know it in the street and members of the public know it. The mayor Just Announced a statement denouncing the violence against those officers on the Brooklyn Bridge this morning and said hes working to heal the community through primarily police reform. Bret thank you. On the other coast, nightly protests in oregon have devolved into confrontations with police and it now, the mayor of portland is asking federal officials to stay out of it. She correspondent Jonathan Hunt has details tonight. Political leaders in oregon have never been comfortable with the presence of heavily armed federal agents on the streets of portland and now that mayor ted wheeler is saying simply we do not need or want their help. He also suggested the agents who have been guarding buildings including portlands federal courthouse instead spend their time cleaning up the graffiti left there by protesters we have gathered for 48 straight nights now, at times attacking police and federal agents with rocks, bottles, ball bearings and even a hammer. The mayors comments were triggered by an incident on saturday when a gas or smoke canister was fired by Law Enforcement towards one protester who bent down and appeared to flick the canister a few feet back in the direction of, but not near the line of federal agents in front of the courthouse. Seconds later, the protester was hit directly in the head by some sort of impact munition. He is still in the hospital having undergone surgery for a fractured skull and facial reconstruction. Oregons Democratic Senators ron wyden and jeff merkley told the administration they condemned any effort to silence is peacefully exiting their First Amendment rights. If cities like portland cant control protesters, then he wi will. Speak to the leftwing group of people that are running our cities are not doing the job they are supposed to be doing and its not a tough job to do if they knew they were doing. This battle between leaders and the Trump Administration is a stark example of the ongoing debate over sending in militarized forces calms or inflames these kinds of situations. President trump Jonathan Hunt in l. A. The family of george floyd is suing the officers involved in his death in the city they worked for. Senior correspondent mike tobin has details tonight for tonight for minneapolis. Stating that minneapolis Police Officers have been trained with killall edgy, warrior style training, Benjamin Crump filed a lawsuit on behalf of the family of george floyd killed under the weight of a Minneapolis Police officer. It was not just the knee of officer Derek Chauvin on George Floyds neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. But it was the knee of the entire Minneapolis Police department. Reporters have now been able to see but a cam video from two of the officers at the scene which starts before the initial encounter with george floyd. The contact initially becomes tense when the officer demands to see his hands and pulls a gun. It spirals downward over a half hour as george floyd becomes more panicked and emotional. He sobs and said, im going to die in here. I just had covid and it dont want to go back to that. As they load him in the suv he complains his claustrophobic and cant breathe a lot before hes on the ground. After a prolonged struggle that ends with floyd on the ground it is officer thomas lane who inquires about his breathing asking, should we roll him on his side . And officer dere officer derek s no, hes staying put. Even with him saying he cant breathe, they still put him face down and had him handcuffed. He was clearly restrained. In the citys charter commissions meeting right now about the potential of disbanding the police altogether and replacing the Police Department with a Community Safety and violence prevention department. A change like that would need to get on the ballot and be approved by the voters before it goes into effect. Bret mike tobin in minneapolis, thank you. Today is the deadline for you to pay your federal taxes. It was pushed back because of the pandemic. The correspondent rich edson says even with three extra months, there are still plenty of problems. Tax day in july. It returns are due today three months later than the normal deadline and the pandemic, limited in person staffing and the unexpected task processing about 160 million Coronavirus Relief test means the irs has behind. The irs is backlogged and they are now in a place where they can process more quickly. Aaron set in a recent report that while the overwhelming majority of taxpayers filing electronically, taxpayers who file paper returns are experiencing extreme delays in processing the returns. The report found that as of may 15th the irs had a backlog of 4. 7 million paper returned. The irs wants a processing paper returns could take several weeks longer and advises americans to file the returns electronically. The tax agency says its bringing more workers back and directing its employees who cant work from home to get into the office this week. The irs says as of july 3rd it had processed more than 130 million returns. About 9. 5 fewer than the same time last year. And as the irs is part of the Treasury Department responsible for processing Coronavirus Relief payments, if Congress Approves and around and if the extra three months is not enough than tax filers can request another three month extension. So if they owe money to the federal government they still have to calculate what they think they may owe and send it by today to avoid fees and interest payments. Now, if the irs delays your refund as long as you file by today, the government will pay you interest on that amount. Anywhere from about 35 . Bret it rich edson outside of the irs. The director of the cdc says wearing a mask is one of the most powerful weapons available. But there is much resistance here in this country. That said, overseas there is growing acceptance in europe. Senior Foreign Affairs correspondent greg palkot as that story tonight from london. The u. K. Is covering up against covid19. Starting next week brits will have to wear face masks when they go into stores or face the equivalent of a 125 fine. The coronavirus is pretty much under control for now in britain but the aim is to prevent a new flareup as well as restart a badly hurt the economy. We want to give people more confident to shop safely and enhance protections for those who work in shops and both of these can be done by the use of face coverings. After observing a socially Distance National holiday in france, the president says they will be doing the same. This has been prepared so we have the right stocks in good quantities. They are coming around to the benefits of face coverings and they are already being put to use in shops in italy, germany, spain and greece, and schools in france, at airports and the netherlands and on the beach in spain. In might be that covered up new for a while. We are not ever going to get back to normal until we have a vaccine. Not all here like wearing masks, some people in the u. K. President trump this is about ms13 and we will have another announcement next week. The leftwing group of people that are running our cities are not doing the job that they are supposed to be doing we are going to seek the Death Penalty against alexi sands who is the leader in the Eastern District of new york, a leader of ms13. President trump for decades, the single biggest obstacle for building a modern Transportation System has been the mountains and mountains of bureaucratic red tape in washington, d. C. We are cutting the federal permitting timeline for a major project from up to 20 years or more, hard to believe, down to two years or less. Bret President Trump in georgia talking infrastructure and regulations and then in the white house going after ms13, that horrible group that has done a lot of damage and murders across the u. S. Going after its leader. And of the breaking news as we just reported, the national organization, association of Police Organizations endorsing President Trump. Just moments ago, its president said they got a call from the president thanking them for the endorsement. Remember this organization endorsed president obama and Vice President biden in 2008 and 2012 and they did make an endorsement in 2016 but the president saying that the president said it was an honor and wanted to let us all now how important this endorsement was to him personally and professionally. Obviously it comes as the efforts to defund Police Departments all over the country are springing up. Lets bring in our panel, susan page. Washington post coming Marc Thiessen and it seems kimberly that this is significant for the president at this moment, when polls show him trailing in key battleground states. The organization, the National Police organization is a significant organization. This is a function of what we are now seeing is growing unrest and violence. Its one thing to have protest and civil unrest but this is now turning into a long hot summer of violence and looting and putting in a spotlight on this question of law and order and rule and the law of cities. In the president is embracing that. One thing thats interesting about that endorsement as it raises a broader prospect of whether or not the white house has some potential for inroads with the union votes, not just among Police Officers but firefighters, people who work in the infrastructure and fossil fuels because that is going to be a big points and flash points in contention. Bret is governor of portland are talking about recent unrest there. The street violence in portland absently needs to stop. This is not the answer as if we thought, it only escalates the tension. President trump they are like war zones. End of the city is and out of politicians, i dont say this for political reasons, they are all democrats, liberal leftwing democrats and its almost like they think this will be this way forever. We are not going to put up with that. Bret at the governor of oregon, not the governor of portland obviously. The governor of oregon talking about portland they are, susan page. We should point out that joe biden said that publicly as recently as yesterday that he does not support defending police, but this is an issue in different cities especially with the violence continuing. We see the chaos in portland and we see the violent demonstration that we saw in new york, this is the ideal backdrop for the Campaign Theme that hes been dropping in this world and we saw this in a 32nd tv ad. But i think the risk to the president , he is at odds with somebody when it comes to kind of thinking about racial justi justice, and the protest, its not 1968 and in a way it feels like hes running in 1968. Bret it was overlooked by a lot of the press today but that ms13 announcement that the leader has been captured and they are going after the Death Penalty, thats a big deal for some states that have been dealing with that game for a while. It is, and the president is running on law order, hes always been campaigning about talking about getting tough with an ms13 and now hes talking about getting tough with the looters and writers in the cities. By the way, in portland, the federal troops, the trump troops as the government called and are protecting federal buildings because the Portland Police are doing it. It has been 23 million in damages to buildings and primitive. This is not small stuff. There are two ways of looking at it, and on one hand there is an argument to be said, let the cities burn. They have wanted to they talk about defunding the police and would let them look at the consequences of that leadership. If they dont like it then we should do with the leader of new york did in the 1990s and elected Rudy Giuliani to clean things up. On the other hand the argument is what about the minority . You cant just leave them defenseless against mob violence. The president has a responsibility. 500 million of damage in minneapolis, 23 million in portland. These people need to be defended and if their elected leaders wont do it then its up to the president to do it. Bret in the meantime, kimberly, its interesting backandforth at the white house, about dr. Anthony fauci. Peter navarro, advisor to the president , dr. Fauci has a good bedside manner to the public and he has been wrong about everything i have interacted with him on. So when you ask me when i listen to dr. Faucis advice, my answer is only with skepticism and caution. Is the president , dr. Fauci, and the Vice President today. President trump he made a statement representing himself, he shouldnt be doing that. I have a very Good Relationship with anthony. It is a bit bizarre, i dont fully understand it. I think they realize that was not a prudent thing to do because is only reflecting negatively on them. I cant explain Peter Navarro, he is and will by himself. Peter fat she is a valued member of the Coronavirus Task force, we just completed our latest meeting today and we couldnt be more grateful for his study council. Spiel of the Vice President even put out our picture of that meeting. Kimberly, your thoughts . The white house also said the navarro peace had not been vetted and didnt go through the usual process, and that seems to have to be the case. In this case, Peter Navarro has not served the white house well. The press and critics have been attempting to cause a in the white house over its Pandemic Response policy, and to try to suggest that there are issues between ouchi and the president for months now. So why they would require the white house to spend a good portion of the day were repairing that damage, and sense of the president well. Bret susan, last word. Dance covino had his own twitter post about dr. Fauci, not just Peter Navarro. Its reflected but not credible to have at this moment when his credibility is low and dr. Faucis credibility on that front is really high. Bret next step, the canceled culture and a suggestion for a new National Anthem . Let me grab a pen and some paper. Know what . Im gonna switch now. Just need my desk. My chair. And my phone. Only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. This is a culture of the left and not being satisfied, making an argument or even prevailing in an argument but destroying personally and marginalizing people who oppose it. Its time to do the obvious to declare kind of a armistice on the vitriol and apocalyptic rhetoric and simply say, we are a republic. We have a loyal opposition. Lets be loyal, lets be civil, on both sides. I think it can be done. Bret so great to hear the late, great Charles Krauthammer, in the post he wrote on june 8, 2018. I believe the pursuit of truth and ideas through honest debate and regress argument is in the a noble undertaking. This of course comes in the wake of bari weiss resigning from the New York Times and that Resignation Letter saying that twitter is not on the mass of the New York Times but twitter has become its ultimate editor. And now the Los Angeles Times has an oped out saying, its time to cancel this starspangled banner. And heres what should replace it, a song that is harder to saying, is this really what we want to hear when we rise to honor america . Such songs celebrate monument mentality, and our current political predicament as her mentor within certain lines can be, how veneration of country can curdle into nationalism. Our nationals nationalism can tilt towards fascism. It should be different than the one we got now, positing another kind of patriotism, and other kind of america and americanness. In fact, there is such a song. Lean on me, a song that holds its gaze study at the level of everyday life. It says, whats important is the stuff happening down here. Thats from the l. A. Times, back to the panel. Mark, your thoughts on all of this . My first thought is i miss Charles Krauthammer. And boy we could use his voice in the middle of all this. Second is, the left always goes too far, this is a fatal flaw. Instead of saying lets inform the police, which a majority of americans agree with, they say lets defund the police which the majority of americans dont agree with. Since instead of saying lets have confederate fat statues, they start tearing down the union, and ulysses s. Grant in washington. Now they are going after the starspangled banner, and whats next . Mom and apple pie . They alienate themselves from the american majority. Bret politically its tough, susan, for someone like joe biden to wade through all of this hasnt happened in front of us, right . I do not hear a serious debate about replacing the starspangled banner, and maybe im out of touch here but i think its a fair point about how far do you go when you are looking at generals who took a positive lead to founders. In the words of Charles Krauthammer, i celebrate that that oped came out and have such a diversity. I also disagree with it absolutely and that is what we are missing right now, brett. I think the constitution is still fine, its still the First Amendment but our framers potentially never imagined that our institutions including our media would begin to self censor. And that is what is wrong right now. We need to remember what Charles Krauthammer says, we need to embrace each others ideas, every brave and be civil about it. Bretsteve linick you always r different views on this panel and thats where charles sat for many years, so panel, thank you very much. When we come back, some brighter side things and some good news. That is nba hall of Famer Shaquille oneal, who stopped to check on a driver on the side of the highway in florida after a tire blew out.
