After three years in legal limbo, former National Security advisor Michael Flynn is one step closer to exoneration, but it comes with criticism. Former prosecutor on the roger stone case quit after the Justice Department intervenes to reduce his sentence. In a scathing oped, jonathan wrote in both cases the department undercut the work of career employees to protect an ally of the president. Also out today, nearly 2,000 former doj employees are calling on attorney general bill barr to resign for his handling of the flynn case. In a phone call with supporters last week, former president barack obama blasted the Justice Departments decision to drop the case. That is the kind of stuff where we begin to get worried. Not just institutional norms but our basic understanding of the rule of law. Its at risk. Before leaving office, obama pardoned retired marine corps general cartwright who also pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi. A former Justice Department officials crying foul, accusing the department of twisting her words to make the case for exonerating flynn. Mary mccourt who worked with National Security matters of the department wrote oped the account of my interview in 2017 doesnt help the support of the conclusion and its disingenuous for the department to twist my words to suggest that it does. The doj is also alleging these words were taken out of context. Well, history is written by the winners. It largely depends on whos writing the history. Bret david spunt outside doj. Thank you. Lets talk about the next steps in the flynn case. Senior political analyst brit hume joins us. Your thoughts about where we are right now and the reaction to it. It seems to me that the people who were in one way or another involved in the handling of the Michael Flynn case are now crying fouled that the Justice Department decided to abandon the case, and i dont that we should take terribly serious either complains about this. When you balance them against what, if all the regularities and obvious signs of bad faith that now come to light and how this whole case was developed and prosecuted from the start. That is i think where we are. It remains to be seen how the judge in the case will respond but if the Justice Department doesnt want to prosecute, its hard to see how the case can go forward despite the fact that flynn entered a guilty plea in a time in his life when financial hed been in great distress. His son according to him and been put in jeopardy of prosecution if he didnt plead, so he did. The reaction to this has been largely predictable into city which is still dominated to a great extent by people who participated in the last administration. Bret speaking of the last administration, former president obama has not waited a bunch on much of anything but now the Michael Flynn case saying that you begin to get worried that basic not just institutional norms but are basic understanding of the rule of law is at risk. Isnt it interesting that this statement emerges at the very time when his name for the first time in any real evidentiary way has come into the public . There was a meeting in the oval office the 5th of januar 5th of january 2017 in which Deputy Attorney general sally yates who ran the department on a daytoday basis was astonished to hear that the president had been briefed on this flynn conversation which was wiretapped, conversation with Russian Ambassador kislyak. The president knew all about it because he learned about a presumably from the fbi, james comey who was in the room also at that meeting, as was Vice President biden. It appears that the president had encouraged the Justice Department and the fbi not to tell donald trump about what they had been looking into with regard to flynn, although they were happy to tell him about the preposterous tape supposedly part of the long ago discredited dossier. We have more to learn about what president obama may have done and said about all of this and whether he may have directed the whole thing. Bret we definitely do. We will follow it. Thank you. Bret we are finding out a lot of new information about the coronavirus, here to talk about what we know in what we do not, dr. David ridge, president and chief operating officer of mount sinai hospital in new york. We appreciate your time, doctor. One of the things we wanted to talk about this evening is what we are learning more about this virus. The Washington Post had an interesting piece over the weekend and it said in part that its unpredictable. Today there is widespread recognition the Novel Coronavirus is far more and predictable than simple respiratory virus. Often it attacks the lungs but it can also strike anywhere from the brain to the toes. Experts say will be years until its understood how the disease damages organs and how medications, genetics, diets, lifestyles and distancing impacted scores. Isnt changing or do we just not know about it . Bret, i believe that whats happening is were learning more every day and the virus is probably somewhat consistent in the way it affects the body. But there are certain syndromes that occur very rarely and some that occur more commonly. As Clinical Experience is gained, we are starting to figure out what those syndromes are. Bret as you look at the symptoms for severe patients, fever is about 80 of them. Cough is also about 65 . Shortness of breath, fatigue. Then you go down the list, cardiac failure about 17 . Youre saying that it affects people differently. Are there new iterations that we are just finding out about different, lets say attacking the heart of the kidney . I think what we are starting to learn as we look at the results of autopsies and look at the experience in the hospitals is that there are two things happening with coronavirus that were somewhat surprising to us. The first is that there seems to be enhanced clotting in certain patients. So for example, within the lungs, not only is there the pneumonia people see but there is also a blockage of very small vessels thats occurring in the long itself. It seems to be blocking blood flow to certain areas of the long which explains some of the reason the oxygen levels are low. Similarly, we are seeing that there is damage to the kidneys but it does not seem to be from clotting. It seems to be from a direct effect perhaps on certain cells within the kidney. Bret go ahead. I was going to say other things are coming about. For example, it seems that certain cells, people have talked about a syndrome called a cytokine storm where the inflammatory response in the body is in hyperdrive. That occurs in some patients as well, and so there seems to be an overlap of several Different Things happening at once. Bret we are learning now more that kids, although a small percentage, but there are some children who are affected here and there have been fatalities in children. Thats sort of a new developme development. Can you explain that . There were some reports from europe. In new york state we have had so many cases of coronavirus but now the state has identified approximately 770 to 80 children 70 to 80 children who are experiencing an overdrive of the immune system. People have compared it to both kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome. But we dont really know if its a new syndrome that just resembles things that have been described in the past. However, several of the children require medication to support the blood pressure. In certain cases, the heart muscle seems to be involved, leading to failure of the circulatory system. Its very concerning even though its very rare. Bret is were learning more about this, it seems pretty much week to week, does it change the efforts on therapeutics and eventually a vaccine . Well, one thing that we noticed at mount sinai and published some data on just recently was that when we started to use blood thinners in a consistent way, drugs that block the clotting system in the body, it appeared to be beneficial in that there was an association between the use of the blood thinners and Better Outcomes in patients who were in a more severe state, on ventilators. So thats one example of how people are starting to discover some treatments for the disease. Although they are at the very rudimentary stage. Also it seems the use of convalescent plasma may have some beneficial effects as well, in addition to the drug remdesivir. When you take it all into account, even as we are learning more about the different syndromes that occur with the disease, i think we are also getting a hint that there are certain therapies that may show benefits. Although further study is necessary. Bret we wish you all the best, because wow, its important. Thank you for the time. We appreciate it. Thank you. Just a few short months, weve developed a Testing Capacity unmatched and unrivaled anywhere in the world and its not even close. This is a core element of our plan to safely and gradually reopened america. I dont think the system broke down at all. As far as americans getting a test, they should all be able to get a test right now. Bret President Trump of the rose garden today holding the event, taking questions, little bit of backandforth with reporters, abruptly ending it. But telling people that if anybody wants to test, they can get a test. What about that . Lets bring in the panel. Bill bennett, former education secretary. Mara liasson, National Political correspondent of National Public radio. Chris stirewalt, politics editor here at fox news. Mara, your take on this press briefing. The president was promising tests for anyone who wants it. We have heard him say that before. On march 6 he said famously anyone who needs a test can get it. The proof will be in the pudding. We will see if what the white house is offering states to ramp up testing, they want them to be able to test about 2 of their populations, really happens. Its interesting because the president has gone back and forth on this. Just the other day he said testing was necessary. He is kind of played down the need for massive testing where other people including some top Health Officials say testing and tracing in isolation is the way you can open up safely. Bret bill, i guess one of the common questions for reporters was how can you say that the country is going to be safe if there are coronavirus cases inside the white house . Different phraseology for the framing of the question but roughly that question. Well, there are coronavirus cases everywhere in the country since the stanford and ucla study we realized that the prevalence of the viruses in the millions. That doesnt mean serious cases are in the millions. Certainly not that mortality is in the millions. So i think when the president talks about everyone who needs to be tested, should be tested, can be, thats what we are talking about. Extra precautions are being taken at the white house. Some of those questions were really odd, like if youre being tested every day, why cant everybody be tested every day . Well, everybody doesnt go around air force one. Every resident doesnt have secret Service Protection pretty want to exercise special safeguards but incredible strides of been taken in testing. Lets remember the number of people who need tests is a lot, a lot smaller than the number of people whove touched the virus because so many people, the vast number of these cases are asymptomatic. Bret politically, chris, how does this fall along lines . Joe biden saying that the Trump Administration is not capable this is joe bidens former boss, former president obama on a Conference Call. Take a listen. It has been an absolute chaotic disaster when that mindset of whats in it for me and to heck with everybody else, when that mindset is operationalized in our government. Bret chris, the political lines in this issue. The reality for President Trump is the testing piece, its his big vulnerability. The decision is made of the cdc, the decisions made at the fbi in the early going the slow things down pretty dramatically that was one of his big vulnerabilities. Joe biden is going to come after him hard, hard, hard on that. Thats why this phase is so crucial. Everything bill said tells us why testing is crucial and wife are reopening an economic vitality, testing is important. Its the vulnerability. They have to turn it from a weak spot to a strong spot. Bret the political effort on capitol hill to get this next phase, the democrats are running alone essentially going to draw it up and say this is what we have. This is the big question, do you still need massive infusions of federal aid to keep the economy afloat . We put the economy and kind of a medically induced coma. One of the things that Lamar Alexander was saying and hes the chairman of the committee thats going to hold the hearing tomorrow as we dont have enough money to keep the economy in a medically induced coma. So youve got to do massive testing not just to find out who is sick but to find out hes not sick so that they can go back to work on other people can isolate. I think youre going to have a big battle over this next phase. Republicans arent so sure that you need a big, new infusion of aid. As they say, lets take a look at whats happening now. Lets evaluate and not rush into another trillion dollars of assistance. Bret will follow it. Standby, panel. Let me get to you, bill, the next one. Not happy with the flynn decision . Former president obama making that clear. President trump making clear he has a new word for what happened. Limu emu doug [ siren ] give me your hand i can save you. Lots of money with Liberty Mutual we customize your Car Insurance so you only pay for what you need only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. I do motivational speakingld. Better life. There is no precedent that anybody can find for someone whos been charged with perjury just getting off scotfree. Thats the kind of stuff were you begin to get worried the basic not not just institutional norms but the basic understanding of our rule of law was at risk. He was targeted by the Obama Administration and he was targeted in order to try to take down a president. What they have done is a disgrace and i hope a big price is going to be paid. Bret attorney general barr said the Michael Flynn decision was a good decision that upheld the rule of law, upheld the Justice Department standards, the president tweeting over the weekend obamagate makes watergate look small time your thoughts. I was surprised that president obama entered into this, particularly unfortunate is his use of the phrase institutional norms. Do you want to talk about institutional norms of the fbi and basic violations of law . Now we find out what seems very likely that president obama knew about this investigation it was going on before the president elect and decided not to tell him. This is some kind of offensive move on the part of the obama people because i think they fear something really big and very tough on them is coming. Its beginning to come. I dont think until we see john durham and some of the other matters that we will see the full weight of it. They are rattled big time. Bret mara, your thoughts . Speak of the president has been hinting that theres more things to come in the next couple weeks. He is clearly intent on undermining the narratives of the russia investigation, starting with this, the prosecution of Michael Flynn but he doesnt really say any specifics. He was asked what crime does he think president obama committed and he said you know what it is. He wouldnt say. Sometime in the past the president has flagged things and kind of previewed things that dont happen. But he is saying that there are shoes to drop the next couple weeks and were going to find out what they are. Bret chris, the president was pressed on what crime he would say the former president committed an obamagate has he calls it. He said youll know what it is. As far as president obama looking back, in 2017 Andy Mccarthy points out just days before leaving office barack obama pardoned retired marine corps general James Cartwright who pleaded guilty to charges of lying to the fbi. It seems interesting statement for the former president to make on that Conference Call which he knew obviously was going to get leaked out. If he knew it was going to be leaked out, then he shouldnt have said it. He had no business talking about it. In a setting that he thinks, that he thought was going to come up. Out for his sake that he was naive about that. What we find out about obama and what we find out about his Justice Department and the fbi in that era is james comey, seems like working directly with the outgoing president on talking about the investigation of his successor. We have seen daily almost what was wrong with the comey era and the screwed up Justice Department at the end of the Obama Administration. When you have sally yates, acting attorney general, didnt even know about the stuff that was going on. There were obviously big problems with the way things were executed at the end of the obama term. It was people were struggling with something very different and new to them. Boy, does james comey look like a stinkaroo. A Conference Call with 3,000 former administration officials, one would think might make the news in washington. It would. A lot of people hanging around.
