The trip comes as his administration deals with major developments in hot spots both at home and around the globe. Benjamin hall in london as china criticizes what it calls the sinister intentions of the u. S. In hong kong. Jennifer griffin at the pentagon, as a former secretary of the navy, a scathing critique for his old boss, the president. We begin with corresponded kevin corke near the president s florida resort. Call it operational security, call it secret, by any definition, the president s visit to afghanistan was a very welcome surprise for some of the Many American troops stationed abroad this thanksgiving holiday. I hope everyone enjoyed thanksgiving meal. Some 50,000 feet above the frigid wild blue, a warm welcome in afghanistan. We love him, we say happy thanksgiving. The surprise trip to see u. S. Service personnel this holiday, a welcome treat for troops on a day we all pause to give thanks. Millions of families sit down at their dinner tables back home, they will be saying a prayer for the men and women serving our nation in afghanistan and deployed all around the globe. It was in many respects like what we have seen before, plenty of photos, a bit of goodnatured banter and serviced by the commander in chief. To those who in being here have already sacrificed so much. His remarks had on familiar themes too, a stronger than ever military, the removal of terrorists from the battlefield and the like. He used his trip to meet his president ial counterpart announcing the u. S. And taliban have restarted peace talks with the u. S. Insisting on a ceasefire. The tele band wants to make a deal and we are meeting with them and we are saying it has to be a ceasefire, they didnt want to do a ceasefire but now they do want to do a ceasefire. This after the u. S. Withdrew from peace talks in september and the president said hes following through with his Campaign Promises to draw down american troop levels substantially to about 8600. Thats the number of people are talking about, yes. [reporter questioning] it is for now, we can go much further than that. Keenly aware that the future will fend for itself, this was a day to remain very much in the present, a chance to cap a journey shrouded in secrecy, with a very public declaration of support. Theres no where i would rather celebrate this thanksgiving then right here with the toughest, strongest, best, and bravest warriors on the face of the earth. Right now between 12 and 13,000, thats down a couple of thousand from this time a year ago, the president making very clear that the u. S. Will remain in the country unless there is a deal or we achieve total victo victory. Mike pretty cool, visit from the commander in chief. Ousted Navy SecretaryRichard Spencer says the commander in chief has very little understanding of how the military works, it is the latest salvo in the burgeoning conflict over President Trumps intervention in military discipline, National Security correspondent Jennifer Griffin has the latest tonight from the pentagon. The case surrounding navy seal eddie gallagher, after the president advocated for gallagher who was acquitted of murder and still faced punishment for posing in a photo with a dead iraqi militant in a scathing op end, fired Navy SecretaryRichard Spencer attacked the president for intervening in the case. This was a shocking and unprecedented intervention in a low level review, it was also a reminder that the president has very little understanding of what it means to be in the military, to fight ethically or be governed by a uniform set of rules and practices. I dont think he understands the full definition of a war fighter, the war fighter is a profession of arms, it has standards if they have to be held to and they hold themselves to. Gallagher who deployed eight times with the seals to intense combat zones was charged with multiple war crimes including murder but acquitted after the navy prosecution bungled the case in july. President trump pardon two soldiers and two separate war crimes cases ordered he retain his trident. You can get away with things, we have to have good order and discipline. I stuck up for three great warriors against the deep state. I dont think you should do that. People have to be able to fight, these are great warriors. The head of the seals, defense secretary and others believe the process should be able to play out without interference from the white house. Spencer ended the oped with americans need to know that 99. 9 of our uniformed members always have come always are, and always will make the right decision. Our allies need to know we remain a force for good and to please bear with us as we move through this moment in time. The navy has dropped the trident peer review board for the three seals connected to the photos, now the controversy moves to the army where the soldier who President Trump pardoned once his distinguished Service Cross back. Mike Jennifer Griffin at the pentagon tonight. China says the president s signing of legislation supporting prodemocracy protesters in hong kong will undermine cooperation between the worlds two largest economies. The reaction on the streets of hong kong was quite positive. Correspondent Benjamin Hall shows us tonight. Hundreds of american flags waved in the streets of hong kong today has protesters thank President Trump for backing them. We want to say to United States citizens and also president donald trump, we want to thank them. President trump signed the human rights and democracy act banning the export of tear grass, pepper spray, and rubber bullets to the hong kong police, a second bill requires the state department carries out an annual review to check if hong kong has enough autonomy to justify favorable u. S. Trading terms. President trump explained his decision saying i signed these bills out of respect to president xi, china, and the people of hong kong. They are being enacted in hopes that leaders will be able to amicably settle their differences leading to longterm peace and prosperity for all. China reacted angrily and some of the u. S. Ambassador telling him to stop meddling in Hong Kong Affairs, they also threatened retaliation. Hong kong is chinas hong kong, Hong Kong Affairs are purely chinas internal affairs, no for an organization from a foreign government, or for an individual has the right to interfere. As they two nations get close to signing phase one of their trade deal, analysts say any retaliation would hurt china more than the u. S. Short term, the chinese are huffing and puffing using all sorts of overthetop language but they are not really going to do anything. In hong kong, please continue operations moving into the polytechnic university, seen of recent major clashes. They are still believed to b0 students hold up inside with molotov cocktails meeting this may yet escalate. It remains to be seen if china will retaliate but certainly it heighten tensions between the two countries. Mike this is a bittersweet thanksgiving for tens of thousands of people in east texas, they are not home for this holiday because of a mandatory evacuation sparked by a massive fire at a Chemical Plant that injured three people. Correspondent Christina Coleman as our update tonight. Firefighters are hard at work battling an in front of the begin early wednesday morning in southeast texas, about 50,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes after an explosion sent a Chemical Plant up in flames. Im wondering how we didnt suffer a significant loss of life. The Chemical Plant produces more than 900 Million Pounds of material a year including a gas use for a variety of Synthetic Materials including rubber and nylon. A state environment officials are working are working aroundtheclock monitoring air quality around the site. I can confirm the situation is improving but we are not completely out of the woods yet. Officials say the initial blast could be felt up to 30 miles away, a second explosion later towered into the sky. It burned off and took off like a rock at. The American Civil Liberties union is criticizing President Trumps plan to put mexican drug cartels on the governments list of terrorist organizations, the director of aclus National Security project says the policy would be cruel and counterproductive. He also says the administration should end what it calls the forced return to mexico of cartel victims. While it is true President Trump has made cracking down on illegal immigration a centerpiece of his first term, in reality his administration lags far behind president obamas pace of deportations, National Correspondent william takes a look at the numbers tonight. Anyone who illegally crosses the border will be detained until they are removed out of our country. That was candidate trumps promise in 2016, supporters believed him and critics. It was true. Three years in, some observers say trump looks like a slacker compared to president obama. You called me to porter in chief. He deported 1. 1 million migrants in his first three years compared to an estimated 800,000 under President Trump. At the height of the crisis, cbp apprehensions exceeded 5,000. Whats different . Two things. Under obama, easily deportable mexican men vastly outnumbered other migrants, today Central American asylum seeking families are entitled to judicial review and must be released after 21 days. Under obama, county jails indiscriminately funneled millions of migrants to ice for deportation, today sanctuary cities and states cut off that pipeline, even stopping agents from enforcing the law in courthouses. This rule will affect a Broad Spectrum of individuals but especially communities of color and immigrant communities who have been the targets of isi ics operations. 50,000 a day, 40 more than obama. The system is so bogged down, some of these cases take a great amount of time. Those in detention come from two places, 80 arrested have a criminal record, the most migrants in custody today arriving from the border dont. The actions by this administration are just morally reprehensible as i said, theyre illegal. While it appears President Trump removed fewer migrants than president obama, he filed more deportation cases than any president in 25 years but court orders and a lack of space forced him to release 250,000 families. A spike in hate message for an italian holocaust survivor comes as an alarm bells go off over a rise of antisemitic acts across europe, italy has been considered on the low end of the spectrum, a full 11 of italians harbor antisemitic attitudes. Court of appeals has issued an administrative stay on don mcgahn, it will issue a longer stay and set oral arguments for a hearing january 3rd, a federal judge ruled monday at began would have to appear before congress rejecting the trump administrations argument that absolute immunity shielded top l questioning. Congressional lawmakers are back home for the holidays when they return to washington last week, impeachment will be the big issue. Lets get some perspective on that tonight, bret baier spoke with West Virginia republican senator Shelley Moore capito earlier this week. Bret thank for being here. Obviously the focus in washington will be impeachment and it seems like its heading towards your side of the capital with you as a juror. As you sit here tonight having watched what youve watched, how do you see this . I see it as a political blunt instrument that it has been throughout the entire process. When the hearings were private, it was pretty obvious that the democrats were using this as a way to be destructive to President Trump himself and then when it comes into the public arena over the last several weeks, i think it showed itself again to be a very divisive, very partisan exercise and discouraging to the american public, but it will be coming over probably to the senate, i will be a juror, im all ears of course to try to figure that out once it comes onto my plate. Bret to that point, one of the people making the case is the House Intelligence Committee chair adam schiff, here is his closing argument. When the founders provided a mechanism in the constitution for impeachment, they were worried about what might happen if someone unethical took the highest office in the land and used it for their personal gain. In my view there is nothing more dangerous than an unethical president who believes they are above the law. Bret there are some republicans, will hurd from texas, others who said that what the president did and how he did it was inappropriate but not impeachable. Are you in that camp . I think probably his inquiries can be construed as such but all the evidence had been second and third head evidence. Ill take what adam schiff in his own words and the seriousness with which he said it, i think he protests too much in his closing statement because he knows the facts are not there, the president has not been able to defend himself and so the process has been very much not what our founders wanted and our rule of law is founded on but is being used as a divisive partisan exercise and its not doing justice to our system. Mike wow bret the Washington Examiner this week had this in an opinion piece saying republicans should admit trumps demands on ukraine were improper, if they are reasonably enough unconvinced that impeachment is the resi remedy,y should take other actions to steer him toward national interests. Is censure something you think the set is going to look at . You can see the drumbeat beginning to develop in the house of representatives, several members or at least one member has mentioned that already. I think its going to be predicated on what the house brings over to the senate and what is laid on the sense plate in terms of the articles of impeachment. I think if you look at the whole transcript of the phone call within a few minutes or so that the president made a statement about investigating corruption and mentioning an opponent, maybe that wasnt the exact proper way but the corruption issue is still a very viable issue in ukraine and something that we know that if we just fund countries without where the money is going to go, without looking at corruption, we are going to get what we deserve back which is not satisfaction. Bret if you look at the latest poll, it said should trump be removed and impeached from office, its upside down now, 48 no, 45 yes. That is flipped from october, if you took a poll in West Virginia, where would it be . If we took a poll in West Virginia it would be 65 no. It would be 100 , why dont you do the job youre sent to do which is to fund the government, support the military, and move forward on really important issues of the day . Bret you think this process so far has already impeded big legislative efforts . We havent gotten the National Defense authorization past, we havent passed usmca, the trade package with our neighbors mexico and canada which we know would be very useful to my state. I cant figure out why that hasnt come forward except the house of representatives doesnt want to give the president of win going into the election. We have an election in november, thats what elections are for. Bret you are just on a congressional delegation overseas and he went to afghanistan. Speaking of the u. S. Military, we have been there on the ground for a long time. Your thoughts on that and the effort to get u. S. Troops back home. We have 14,000 troops there right now, it was not lost on me that the areas that we are working on in terms of counterterrorism whether its the tele ban or isis or al qaeda are exceedingly important, we helped the Afghan National forces and the National Police and the government of afghanistan to secure more and more of their territory because if we dont and if we dont work in that train, advise, and assist capacity that we have been helping them with, they are going to be overtaken again by very violent terrorist groups which then endangers our homeland, its about what is good for our own security and it has been long and hard and costly in a lot of lives and treasure, i think in the end, keeping to help support the morale of the troops is great, im so proud of them when i get to see them. Bret for the people who say 19 plus years we have done our duty there. I understand that, there are times when i feel that way myself. I think we can do a lot more with a lot less and put a lot less lives in danger if we follow the course that we have put forward. We are planning to draw down, that is obvious. The military leaders along with our nato partners feel that is very much in order. The afghanistan government, we have to strengthen that, that is a weak point right now because they had an election that is under question. I think as frustrating as it is and difficult as it is for the american public, we got to look at our Homeland Security and to stabilize that region of the world, its part of our own Homeland Security. Bret senator Shelley Moore capito of West Virginia. Next up, the panel on the president s holiday trip to afghanistan and a handful of domestic and Foreign Policy challenges. Mike President Trump, the commanderinchief with an unannounced visit to afghanistan to thank them for their service come a long way from their families on this holiday. Also talking about the big picture for afghanistan. With that, lets bring in our panel. Chief Congressional Correspondent for the Washington Examiner, White House Reporter for the associated press, and democratic strategist leslie marshall. Your thoughts and the president turning up in afghanistan today . Critical moment for the peace deal in afghanistan that has long eluded the United States, the president wants fewer troops there, there are about 12 or 13,000 troops, he wants it down to about 8,000, you cant do that if there is no peace deal and we havent been able to achieve that, it was called off when that explosion killed an american soldier, the president said forget it, no more talks. Now hes saying lets start again, lets start this up. Its still a real long road to get from just talking to american troops leaving. I think the president is becoming aware of the fact that if all the troops leave, the Terror Threat there will build again, potentially threatening the United States. It seems to me from listening to him today he did make this comment about total victory which i dont think anyone thinks is possible now but he did talk about the idea if we get a deal fine, if we dont, thats fine. That means that troops are going to stay there and thats the message i got from the president. Mike you covered the white house, the commander in chief visiting the troops in the holiday . The cloak and dagger is cool, the president visiting this country and flying into afghanistan and no ones going to know about it . It happened that way which is always kind of cool how these visits come down. The other part of this is how important this is, particularly going into 2020, if you can get some sort of peace deal and start working towards a draw down, that is the sort of Bumper StickerForeign Policy moment that he needs as he is towards november. Mike your thoughts on the images coming from afghanistan, seeing President Trump with the troops, thanking them for their service and given them a pat on the back is there a long way from their families. Its the right thing to do whether democrat or republican, this is a nonpartisan issue, i would give the president a thumbs up on. What i would not give them a thumbs up on is hoping he can achieve any kind of peace deal with a taliban. You cant trust them, weve seen it before and when we walked away from the table they said were going to start bombing people and they did just that with what they did in kabul. I hope there can be some piece, i agree it will be a feather in his Foreign Policy cap but i dont think thats going to be possible. As commander in chief, visiting troops are fighting for freedom when they are away from their families, i will give him a thumbs up on that. Mike sticking with Foreign Policy, north korea wishing us a happy thanksgiving u up to its metrics, lets listen to the japanese prime minister. We havent confirmed anything falling into our territory or excessive economic zone, the frequent launch of Ballistic Missiles is a serious challenge not only for japan but also the international community. Are the North Koreans not getting enough attention . The North Koreans are doing what they have done regardless of the republican president and the president now is seeing what other president s have seen in the recent day of dealing with, which is unless we remove troops from the peninsula, they arent going to stop what they are doing. Were looking at super launchers here, this is a leader, this is a nation not to be trusted and we are seeing that not only today but we have seen that, we cannot be calling this man or this nation our friend as the president so frequently does. This is a relationship the president has put a lot into, trying to take a different approach mother commanders in chief. When he came into office, this was the most difficult and dangerous position on the Foreign Policy menu. As he is going toward the end of his first term, it returns to being, the most difficult position he faces. Its tricky, he went from fire and fury to beautiful letters, you cant go back to fire and fury. Kim jong un is not an idiot as the president has pointed out as well, he knows whats going on with impeachment, he knows whats going on with the election and i think he is going to play the pressure to the president. I agree with that, no one talks about how impeachment plays into all of this, it makes it hard for the president to move on a serious Foreign Policy initiative with north korea right now when hes being undercut in america. All foreign leaders know this but its also a huge issue because the president thought he could achieve this deal. Everybody knew north korea was going to be impossible to denuclearize and they want the sanctions removed, they want troops to stop, stop holding exercises in south korea which has not happened. This is out of frustration that the Nuclear Talks are not restarting come of those sanctions are still in place still hurting north korea and those joint military exercises are still happening, therefore kim jong un is going to keep up with these shortrange missile attacks, this is on the two Year Anniversary of the icbm launch. There is going to be more of this. Mike to hot topic number 3 n to some of the people on the streets of hong kong. The silent majority express their voice but its an uphill battle, we will continue to fight until the day we get a free election. Hong kong quite happy the United StatesCongress Passed several bills standing up for people there and going against beijing, the president signed into law, your thoughts on this issue. They were celebrating today in hong kong, american flags, photos of trump, excited he signed the bill, he didnt have much of a choice because it was passed nearly unanimously in the house and the senate, they could easily override a veto, that is not a battle trump wants to get into right now, he did signal, he wasnt sure if hes going to sign this in part because we are trying to negotiate this big deal on china with trade, he does support the people of hong kong. It certainly looks good for him right now. Mike what about that . Trying to get a trade deal with beijing . What surprised me is for the unconventional president he is, this was a conventional way to approach this. Slow walking it in the last six days and wednesday night when most of washington was already tucked into thanksgiving announcing he was signing this, at the end of the day theres too much at stake for both beijing and washington to do anything. They are having pork shortage, a december 15th deadline going on that could affect things like toys or iphones, American Companies are concerned about this as well. Look, regardless of wall street or a trade deal which this could hurt, im surprised the president came to the table despite the fact you had unanimous approval in the senate and only one republican who didnt in the house built for this, youre seeing this not only do our elected politicians want this but america wants this and we had to do this if we are going to ring the bell of freedom and democracy throughout the world, this is something as a leader and the leader of the free world the president had to do. Im surprised he didnt push back more and im glad that he did this. Mike quite a day inform policy, thanks very much. When we come back, a small boys big thanksgiving mission. Bret tonight, a 6yearold boy and a heartwarming thanksgiving mission gathering loads of gobblers. My mom showed me a picture of a kid sleeping on a rock so i just thought maybe they arent like us, maybe they just need something to eat. My goal is to try to fill up the whole back of my moms car. Bret what a guy. Jude raised the call for turkeys for the homeless in the heartfelt video facebook message with his moms help, he collected 32 turkeys, about 600 pounds of poultry for the homeless in his las vegas community, shine generosity on a day we give things for our many blessings. Great job to jude. Congratulations to his proud parents. Thanu for watching special report it. Happy thanksgiving. A special treat tonight, Charles Krauthammer and his words. Faith in something that one has or doesnt have. Its a difficult concept for me. The one thing i do believe is that of all the possible views of god, atheism is the least plausible. The idea that there is no meaning or purpose or origin that the universe always was. That cannot be. I sometimes joke and say that i dont believe in god and they fear him gratefully
