Help from the government, even as the u. S. Economy hits a speed bump in job growth and the stock market completes its worst week of the year. Chief White House Correspondent john roberts starts us off tonight. Good evening, john. Chris, good evening to you. The situation in alabama is simply heartbreaking. And today the president and the first lady went down there to do their best to reassure folks that they are not alone. On his way out the door today, the president had some other issues to attend to including a february jobs report that came in way below expectations. Departing the white house to tour the tornado devastation in alabama, President Trump put the best face he could on a disappointing monthly jobs number. The economy is very, very strong. If you look at the stock market over the last few months its been great and certainly since my election its up getting close to 50 the stock market. So we are obviously very happy with that. The economy created only 20,000 jobs in february. Nowhere near the 180,000 predicted. Chief Economic Advisor larry kudlow insisting it was an anomaly. Its a very fluky number. It doesnt jive with any of the other things going on. I think you have timing issues, Government Shutdown issues. Seasonal issues. Some good news though, the Unemployment Rate ticked down to 3. 8 . Were seeing wages rise more than they have at any time for a long, long time. Wages are going up. First time for many years. I talked about it during the campaign for over 20 years. So im happy about that. Hanging over the economy in the month to come new concerns about whether the u. S. And china will reach a trade deal. China is sending mixed signals. Some officials questioning whether there will be a deal. And whether president xi jinping should travel to maralago to meet with President Trump. I havent heard that i think they are doing well. But if it happened that way, we will do even better. We will do very well either way with or without a deal. You are not tellin telling me sg i have not heard. A maralago summit from his calendar. Chinas Peoples Congress did take an important step today introducing a Foreign Investment law which prohibits forced Technology Transfer from foreign companies. One of the main points of friction between the two countries. We up with International Economic and trade rules. And the world class business environment. White house officials are now targeting april for a possible deal. President trump is still optimistic it can get done. Im confident, but if we dont make a very good deal for our country, i wouldnt make a deal. If this isnt a great deal, i wont make a deal. Can i get a little hug . Amid all the economic moves, President Trump adopted the role of comforter in chief today traveling with the first lady to tornadoravaged lee county, alabama. We saw things that you wouldnt believe. Here it is. The president and Melania Trump walked the devastated neighborhoods, signed bibles for people who have suffered terribly, and paid their respects to the 23 people who died in the tornado outbreak at a local memorial. And there was a staff change at the white house today. The Communications Director, bill shine who is also the former president of fox news had been Communications Director since june of last year announced his resignation today. Family issues seemed to be at the center of his decision to leave the white house. He would like to see his family more than he has been able to while Communications Director. But he will be staying on with President Trump. He will be a Senior Advisor to the 2020 trump reelection campaign. Chris . Chris john, the president also made news today about his former fixer and lawyer Michael Cohen on the issue of a pardon. What did he say . He did. The president was very busy on his way down to alabama tweeting out that not only did Michael Cohen spokesman lanny dafs contradict what had been testified to Congress Last week he said he had never asked the president for a pardon. The president making news revealing something brand new saying in a tweet, quote additionally, he directed he directly asked me for a pardon. I said no. He lied again. He also badly wanted to work at the white house. He lied. Not surprisingly, cohen fired back that it was the president who is lying about that. Chris . Chris another night at the white house; john roberts reporting there. Thank you. Democrats call it a power grab for the people. Republicans say it amounts to a federal takeover of elections. The house passed a sweeping election reform bill today but it has no chance of going anywhere in the republican controlled senate. Chief Congressional Correspondent mike emanuel is here to tell us whats in it. The bill is passed. The house passed a massive package of overhauls to campaign finance, ethics and Voting Rights on a party line vote. 234 democrats voted for it, 193 republicans voted against it. Critics like the House Republican leader noted it would create a 6 to 1 federal campaign match on small donations to president ial and congressional candidates. They want to take more taxpayer money. They want to give you less freedom. Those who vote for it today, i guess they walk away with a raise in their campaign. It would establish a Pilot Program to give voters 25 campaign vouchers to be donated to any candidate i dont know idea first launched with democracy vouchers. Mark walker mocked the measure with his video saying its not for the people. Its for the politicians. You know i work hard and you should too because hr1 is going to take your hard earned tax dollars and millions more and send them to my campaign so can i put ads on tv. Democrats were eager to emphasize theyre delivering for the american people. We have a mandate to return power to the people. One senator said this is a power grab. Yes, it is. Its a power grab for the american people. [cheers] we are not going to end until we win and we can save a lot of time by the senate just agreeing to those for the people agenda. The celebration for democrats will be shortlived since Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell says its dead on arrival in the senate. But i believe we can actually win elections against people who vote for this turkey. This is a solution in search of a problem. What it really is a bill designed to make it more likely democrats win more often. Its not just republicans who object to it the american civil lishtsz union sends a letter to lawmakers urging them to vote no citing the First Amendment the bill in its current form would still unconstitutionally burden speech and associational rights. There is also a swipe at President Trump in this package requiring president and Vice President s to release 10 years worth of tax returns. The bill would also call for making election day a federal holiday. Chris . Chris mike, there has been another ethics complaint filed against congresswoman alexandria ocasiocortez. Whats that about . Thats right. A conservative group called the Coolidge Reagan foundation has been digging into matters questioning whether or not money contributions to her campaign may have been funneled through an allied pac to her boyfriend reilly roberts. Now her boyfriend is in the focus again about whether her giving him an official house email address was a violation as well. So, they are asking the federal Election Commission to look into the money matters. They are asking the office of congressional ethics to look into this email situation to see whether official resources are being used for personal purposes. Chris . Chris mike, thank you. Sure. Chris minnesota freshman congresswoman ilhan omar may be in still more trouble after fellow democrats read her latest comments on the politico website. Omar says the hope and change offered by barack obama was a mirage. Recalling the caging of kids at the border and the droning of countries around the world both on mr. Obamas watch she says he operated within the same broken framework as his republican successor. Quote we cant be only upset with trump. His policies are bad but many of the people who came before him also had really bad policies. They just were more polished than he was. We dont want anybody to get away with murder because they are polished. We want to recognize the actual policies that are behind the pretty face and the smile. Omar responds on twitter, quote exhibit a of how reporters distort words. I have am an obama fan. I was saying how trump is different from obama and why we should focus on policy, not politics. This is why i always tape my interviews. Speaking of omar and ocasiocortez, another democratic congressman dean phillips tells politico, quote suddenly an entire party is being branded by the perspectives of two of its members who represent 1 of the caucus. Omar and ocasiocortez are just two of a dozen democrats calling for a change to u. S. Policy in venezuela. This comes as others in her party are applauding the president for his gettough stance. Meanwhile, in caracas, some residents of venezuelas capital are finally getting the lights back on after a massive power blackout. The countrys disputed president is pointing a finger at the u. S. Rich edson has the story from the state department tonight. The power at the subway cut out at rush hour, around 5 00 p. M. As the lights went out in venezuela, here in washington a crack within the Democratic Party over who to support in a country besieged by a power struggle. 16 House Democrats split from Party Leadership sending a letter to secretary of state mike pompeo. Opposing u. S. Policy in venezuela blaming it for causing immense suffering. They write, quote threats and involvement in venezuelas Domestic Affairs by the u. S. Are counter productive as they play into the venezuelan governments narrative that the opposition is a proxy for the u. S. Among those signing the letter representatives alexandria ocasiocortez, ilhan omar, Rasheda Tlaib and tulsi gabbard. Rule out a military intervention. Yet other democrats note bipartisan support. Today democrats and republicans are united as one on behalf of the people of venezuela on recognizing interim president juan guaido. Soon after trump recognized juan guaido as the interim president of venezuela House Speaker nancy pelosi and Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer voiced their support. State departments envoy for venezuela responded to the letter saying the administration is trying to address the crisis in venezuela though disputed president Nicolas Maduro is blocking american aid shipments. Intends guaido has Significant International support. The puppet of the United States is first ridiculous. You saw the way in which guaido was received as he stopped in a bunch of latin american capitals. On twitter maduro blamed americans for the Current Situation in venezuela including todays blackout. Abrams pins it on maduros relationship. The countrys once quite sophisticated infrastructure have been plundered and allowed to decay under maduros misrule. Secretary of state mike pompeo also responded to maduro saying his policies have meant no food, and now no power. Pompeo says next there will be no maduro. Chris . Chris rich edson report from the state department. Rich, thanks for that even more alarming numbers tonight about the surge in families trying to cross the southern border into the u. S. Correspondent Casey Stegall shows us whats happening at one especially busy section of the border. Out here along the southern border where boots meet the ground, federal agents say the security and humanitarian crisis has reached a breaking point. Every station right now is stretched. They are at or near capacity. So absolutely the more people that come across, it continues to put a strain on our resources. In the el paso sector alone, which also includes new mexico, agents saw a an increase of more than 1700 percent in the number of family units taken into custody. Information has gotten out that its possible to make an effective asylum claim by getting onto the fiscal territory of the United States. Immigration experts say thats also why even the demographic of those trying to enter has dramatically changed. Historically for decades, most of the people who have come to the border were mexican adults, mostly mexican men. Now they are largely women and children from Central American countries. And they are traveling together more frequently. These are groups, large groups, at least 27 of more than 100 people, each Group Walking around this port of entry and turning themselves in to agents. In a single day more than a thousand migrants did just that and showed up in el paso for processing. About 250 took agents by surprise back in january when they arrived in the middle of the night at a remote Border Crossing in neighboring antelope wells, new mexico. Then a few weeks later at a different new mexico crossing roughly 300 migrants came to this rural station seeking asylum. Border patrol considers a group to be 100 or more people. Thus far, 70 have been reported compared to 13 for the same period last year. Chris . Chris casey, thank you. Up next, is it russias fault some American Parents refuse to let their children be vaccinated . Fox 12 in portland where a new report says oregon child contracted tetanus in 2017. President trump taking to twitter today as well tweeting on International Womens day we honor women worldwide for their vital role in shaping and strength our communities, families, governments and businesses. In turkey, switzerland, italy, ukraine, women all around the world are gathering. Some to celebrate, Others Holding marches and rallies. I think the big news really was that wages went up. Chris President Trump accentuating the positive in todays jobs report which showed fewer jobs created last month than projected but a strong increase in wages. So lets bring in our panel jason riley wall street journal columnist and senior fellow with the manhattan institute. Charles ellayna for the the washingto lane of thewashin. Bad news on the Economy Today 20,000 jobs created. Projections it had been 180,000 jobs. Plus a discouraging report from beijing about prospects for a trade deal with china. Jason, add that all up to the report earlier this week about a record trade deficit, what do you make of it . Well, its one report. We dont know if its a statistical blip or a sign of something more problematic in terms of the economy. We do know that china and europe in particular, their economies are slowing down. We do live in a globalized economy. What is happening there is going to affect us personally. Specifically in terms of our export markets and so forth. But there was a lot of good news in here you know Labor Force Participation rates steady and strong. Wages are up. Labor markets are tight. Unemployment continues to be low. Its been 4 or lower for 12 states months. So there is some good news here. We had furloughs. We had bad weather. Its hard to, again, makedraw too broad a conclusion based on one report. We will will need to a couple more jobs reports. Chris just to follow up on the. Chinese are afraid of sending president goi maralago because they are worried that you will see the same thing that happened with kim and trump that the president will end up walking away from a deal. Perhaps. But we should know better than to try and predict what President Trump is going to do in these situations. He seems to just do whatever is on his mind that day. But, that is not to say that we should be playing down how these trade negotiations and how the tariff fights are affecting the economy. That clearly is part of what is going on in these job reports that we are seeing. Chris certainly part of what we are seeing in the stock market today too. President trump also weighed in today on two of his former associates who are facing prison. Paul manafort and Michael Cohen and he had very different takes on them. I feel very [inaudible] for port arthur. I think itPaul Manafort. He lief things. When he lied about the pardon that was really a lie. Chris i think he thinks that he lied. Chuck, probably not a coincidence that manafort has not turned on the president and cohen has turned on the president. Yes. I suppose Paul Manafort maybe holding out the hope that some day he will still be considered for a pardon. He has just been sentenced to four years and he has another sentencing ahead of him. So he is not turning on the president in this swearing contest now over the pardon between the president and Michael Cohen frankly i dont know what to make of it because i could see it either way. I think there is also the possibility and i think this has been talked about that cohen went through intermediaries his lawyers seeking a pardon from trump but i can assure you of one thing, he is not going to get one now because of the way he talked about the president on the hill the other day. The president really enjoys, i think, dunking on people when he has the opportunity to do. So in this instance he is taking every opportunity, i think, to criticize Michael Cohen he recents him and all the years he spent paying his salary beforehand. And i think that youre completely correct. This is situation where your attitude towards the president dictates his attitude towards you. President trump also said i believe back in noe that he hadnt taken a pardon from manafort off the table yet. There is that hope for manafort, too. We have had a lot of complaints about the length of the sentence that manafort received. As chuck said he is not out of woods here completely. He has another sentencing coming up. And that could run concurrent or could be added to this current sentence he just received. Chris i want to drill down a little bit on this pardon, ben, because the president said today not only that cohen asked for a pardon but he tweeted out that cohen had specifically asked personally asked him for a pardon. Lets put that up on the screen. He directly asked me for a pardon. I said no. He lied again when he told the committee that no he had never asked for a pardon. How do you think the issue with the pardon plays for both cohen and President Trump . Well, i think that the president obviously wants to play this as a situation where you cant trust anything that cohen says. Its the same sort of script that he used against him, you know, immediately after his testimony on capitol hill. And that his associates did as well. In this instance i think he is making a claim that might have to reach a point where it is justified. Particularly if some kind of perjury pursuit against cohen continues, which i think it will. Its in the interest of House Republicans to do that to, you know, continue to paint him as someone who is an opportunist who cannot be trusted on anything. Chris the flip side of that, chuck, is that it raises the question as to whether or not people in the trump camp, whether it was the president himself or some of his lawyers were dangling pardons at earlier points in this investigation. It certainly does. And i would personally like to know what the real story is about this pardon. I want to know was it dangle . I want to know was it sought in the problem is, of course, these two guys who arent exactly on very good terms with the truth who are best witnesses to it. And, you know, there is also a risk, its kind of a subtle risk i think in this for trump. The more he talks about what a liar cohen is, the more idi values the thing cohen said at his hearing that are beneficial to trump. Chris as if there was no collusion. No collusion so on and so forth. Chris panel, we have to take a break here. When we come back, the friday lightning round. R workflow. Attract new customers. And independent redistricting of congressional districts. Ben . Good legislation or bad. Its ridiculous. Its not a piece of legislation thats really meant to be legislation. Its a piece of legislation thats designed to stakeout a position. One thing that you didnt mention in terms of just an assessment of how unfair it is that it changes the makeup of the fec the federal Election Commission from having six people and evenly balanced situation to five where it would be always skewed in favor of one party over the other. I just think that this is not a responsible piece of legislation. It has no chance of becoming law. Chris let me remind everybody this is the lightning round. I used to say that to krauthammer all the time. Its a mixed bag. There is really offthewall stuff that probably wouldnt pass constitutional muster. Good stuff for example independent redistricting commissions. I do agree with ben, its mainly about staking out a position for the Democratic Party. Something for them to rally around after a bad week. I think its something they needed to do. Chris jason, it would often toughen Disclosure Requirements so much that even the aclu is against it. That was my point. Its not republicans alone who are opposed to this. The aclu says its unconstitutional infringement on free speech. I think it also getting back to bens point, it federalizes a voting process that is typically been left to the states in terms of who is qualified to vote, election rules and so forth that are on a statebystate basis now. It federalizes that i think thats a nonstarter for a lot of people as well. Chris lets turn to venezuela and surprising news, at least surprising to me that the fire brand democratic freshman alexandria ocasiocortez and ilhan omar are actually criticizing President Trumps get tough policy on maduro in venezuela. Talking about maybe he was dialing back the possibility of military sanction military action and the fact of economic sanctions. Your reaction to that . I think it tells you that nancy pelosi is the leader of the house in name only, frankly. I think she has lost control of this caucus. And it also shows a sort of ignorance of the region. Ocasiocortez already said she doesnt know of much about the middle east and showcasing when it comes to south america as well. People are starving. They are eating their pets literally. Zoos are killing animals to feed the pluck. This is ridiculous. She thinks the bad guy is donald trump. Chris chuck . This was a rare moment of bipartisanship in washington of late where Chuck Schumer and nancy pelosi supported the president s policy. They did it in part to help democrats like Donna Shalala in south florida and i kind of agree with jason the Party Discipline is not holding, at least for this small group. Chris let me pick up on this, ben. One other area where they are disagreeing with the leaders is recognizing juan guaido as the interim president. Shiewrnl went for it. Pelosi went for it the two freshman say not so fast. The broader narrative of whats going on in the past few weeks is independent occasion nancy pelosi long hailed as someone who had an iron grip on her conference has lost control of the significant part of that narrative. Maybe its the difference between social media now vs. Not having it before when she was in charge. But this is part of that story. Chris all right. We have got a couple of minutes left, real quickly, winner, loser . My winner is ocasiocortez who defended omar antisemitic remarks then got a resolution trying to denounce those watered down to basically nothing. And i think in the process shows that nancy pelosi is not really running things in the house of representatives. There she is. My loser is tom perez the head of the Democratic Committee which is afraid to let fox news host a primary debate. Its remarkable. Cowardice, i think, if the democrat candidates cant handle questions from fox news hosts they dont deserve to be president. Chris chuck . My winner is joe biden leading in the polls though not announced for the democratic demonstration. Two of the strongest contenders in the socalled moderate lane of the race have gotten out Mike Bloomberg and sherrod brown. John hickenlooper and beto orourke weaker. Good for biden. Loser Robert Mueller who only got four years of a sentence for Paul Manafort. He had recommended at least 19. Although he does have another crack at it. And that judge, judge ellis over there in virginia did not like the special counsel. Chris less than a minute . Winner . Biggest winner of the week was the nerds at Critical Role dungeons and dragons kick starter they asked for 750,000 they raised 600 million in four days. My loser is the poor teacher who did not recognize the cross on that poor kids forehead and made him wipe it off in Elementary School in utah. Hopefully this will be a learning experience for those of you was who perhaps needed to spend more time studying religion in america. Chris whats the name of the group thats the winner . Critical role critters. They are the best. Chris all right. Anybody who knew them raise your hand. [laughter] okay. Obviously ben. Good on you. Thank you, panel. When we come back, notable quotables. Symbicort is for copd, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It should not be taken more than twice a day. It may increase your risk of lung infections, osteoporosis, and some eye problems.
