Watched live as agents toed towd away a white van praised President Trump and targets overth faces of some of the people who received pipe bombs in the mail. None of those pipe bombs in those packages detonated. The fbi director said today definnellively while crudely constructed they were not hoaxes. Attorney general Jeff Sessions said regardless of political beliefs the department will bring the full fours of the law against anyone who resorts to violence to further an agenda. We have Fox Team Coverage tonight. Chief White House Correspondent john roberts joins us with what the president is saying about todays arrest and the fallout from that. But we begin with chief intelligence correspondent Catherine Herridge with a look at how investigators got their suspect. Good evening, catherine. Thank you, bret and good evening. Todays announcement is the culmination of a five day manhunt that began monday in the Greater New York area and ended a thousand miles away in south florida drawing on more than a dozen federal agencies led by the secret service and fbi. We have arrested cesar sayoc in connection with with this investigation. The 56yearold suspect was arrested in south florida and is now facing five federal criminal counts for sending explosives through the mail and targeting current and former democratic politicians. This is utterly unacceptable. Political violence or the threat of violence is anesthetic call to our vigorous system of selfgovernment. Federal investigators seized his van covering it with a blue tarp concealing protrump stickers. Praising republicans, slamming democrats. And showcasing videos of himself appears at trump rallies. The attorney general was pressed why sayoc singled out democrats and one powerful party donor. He appears to be a partisan. But that would be determined by the facts. The break in the case came when fbi lab identified a latent fingerprint on one of the suspicious package envelopes addressed to democratic congresswoman maxine waters. Two additional pieces of d. N. A. Evidence from other packages matched sayoc already in the Law Enforcement database because of his past criminal activity. The work of the men and women of Law Enforcement here and the work that was done over the last week is something that should make every american proud and grateful. Another device was discovered today in california addressed to democratic senator kamala harris. And in new york city addressed to cnn contributor and former director of National Intelligence james clapper. The fbi director emphasized the devices, now more than a dozen, intercepted on the east and west coast were dangerous, not a hoax. Laying out new details of their construction. Each device consisted of roughly six inches of pvc pipe, a small clock, a battery, some wiring and what is known as energetic material. A conviction on the five federal criminal charges which could expand as the investigation progresses carry the prison term of up to 48 years. The defendants conduct as charged is cowardly and reprehensible and totally anathema to our democracy. In the last few minutes we learned that sayoc will have First Court Appearance on monday. Told fox after that initial Court Appearance in miami sayoc is expected to be transferred to new york city and prosecuted there. Nearly half of the packages were routed through the Greater New York city area, bret. Bret catherine, the News Conference was pretty do tailed. They said they were still investigating whether he had any help with anybody else. What else was kind of left out of that. Never really got to the issue of premeditation. Was this something he did over several weeks himself . So making him a lone actor in this office or was it done very quickly which would suggest that he may have had help from someone whiting or unwitting in this plot. Thank you. You are welcome. Before he left, the president spoke about todays arrest, first, praising Law Enforcement but, also asking that the media start reporting on some of the other big things happening with his administration, especially ahead of the midterm election. As you heard the attorney general Jeff Sessions say a moment ago, investigators are still looking into the why of cesar sayocs alleged terror campaign. Now that they have him in custody President Trump is anxious to get back to the how on how to hold on control of congress and deal with that migrant caravan. I just want to compliment Law Enforcement for having done an incredible job. Desupporting the white house for a Campaign Rally in charlotte, President Trump praised Law Enforcement for so swiftly appear prehengsding cesar sayoc he said he did not see the protrump signage on sayocs van. Did i not see my face on the van. I dont know. I heard he was a person that preferred me over others but did i not see that. Earlier today, the president lamented how the threatening packages have taken the focus off the midterms. In an unusual tweet, almost questioning the degree of the threat he wrote republicans are doing so well in early voting and at the polls and now this, quote bomb stuff happens and the momentum greatly slows. Late this afternoon, he pulled back a little admitting the coverage was justified. All that you people was talked about was that and rightfully so, it was a big thing rightfully. So now we have to start the momentum again. Still he seemed frustrated that his accomplishments like a plan announced yesterday to lower Prescription Drug prices didnt. It didnt get the coverage it should have. He was eager to move on from the suspicious package story. Now our Law Enforcement has done such a good job so maybe that can start to disappear rapidly because we dont like those stories. One thing President Trump would like to get back to is the caravan. I called up the military. This is the military, greatest military in the world. I called up the military. Were not letting them in. They ought to go back now. Now, do we them to apply and come in legally, absolutely. [cheers] on the southwest border today, dhs secretary Kirsten Nielsen described what the u. S. Militarys role will be in border enforcement. We have asked for engineering support, logistic support. Engineering support, of course, that would include vehicle barriers, pedestrian barriers. We make that request to the department of defense. In addition, the pentagon will provide planes and hospitals, medical and command and control facilities and temporary housing for customs and Border Patrol personnel. The white house is also discussing possible executive or regulatory action to stop Illegal Migrants in the caravan from either crossing over the border or staying in the United States. A white house official telling fox news the administration is considering a wide range of administrative legal and legislative options to address the democratcreated crisis of mass illegal immigration. What we are looking at every possible way within the legal construct that we have to make sure that those who do not have a legal right to come to this country are do not come in and or are immediately apprehended, detained and removed. Sources tell fox news that no path forward has been determined yet. One of the big points of what im told is vigorous discussion is what may or may not be legal. One thing that the white house does have in its corner, this time, if it goes after the migrants is a 54 conservative majority at the supreme court. Bret . Bret john, you heard the president. Yesterday, today, praising Law Enforcement, especially today. But he is still hung up on the coverage of this and how it effects him and the coming days ahead of the midterms. Yeah. The president didnt appear to be personally too happy about the fact that the midterm elections and his campaign and for some very tight races and his Prescription DrugReduction Plan kind of got pushed off the front page. He is doing everything he can to now to get it above the fold. Watch for him to open up more than he did in wisconsin the other day. Bret it took investigators less than a week to catch suspicious mailings to high profile democrats and cnn. Law enforcement receiving praise from all corners tonight. Several viewers asked whatever happened to the investigation into the letters laced with anthrax as i want to capitoincidentan s. Kristin fisher a w. A look at killed five people and sickened 20 more. There is no question that anybody who would mail anthrax with the attempt to harm american citizens is a terrorist. It was the worst act of bioterrorism in u. S. History. As americans were still reeling from the 9 11 attacks, just three weeks later a photo journalist at the Sun Newspaper was killed by inhaling anthrax. It was the first anthrax death in the u. S. In 25 years. And initially the Bush Administration thought it was an isolated incident. But that all changed when anonymous letters layered with anthrax started showing up at news outlets in new york and florida and u. S. Capitol. He is being described as a former male stripper, acquaintances and relatives are telling reporters he used steroids for years. He has a long rap sheet in florida. 2002 he was sentenced to one year probation for making a bomb threat in miamidade county. Charged with bomb threat, grand theft, battery, petit larceny. Not prosecuted. Drug possession. Fraud lengths refunds and tampering with physical evidence. The van that he lived in, were told, was taken away and we saw that live on tv. You can see the van with the stickers, a lot of political stickers supporting President Trump, Vice President pence there are other stickers on there, cnn sucks and also targeted pictures with a target over Hillary Clintons face and others. The president was asked about that as he left for charlotte a short time ago. I did not see my face on the van. I dont know, i heard he was a person that preferred me over others, but did i not see that there is no blame. There is no anything. If you look at what happened from Steve Scalise that was from a supporter of a different party. I think i have been toned down. You want to know the truth. I could really tone it up because as you know the media has been extremely unfair to me and to the republican party. With all of that being said, we are winning so i like that. Bret what about all of this and the developments . Lets bring in our panel byron york chief Political Correspondent of the washington examiner. Well, we now know who the suspect is is he a strange, unbalanced man, long criminal record as you said who adopted the most extreme displays of trump support. You can see those. I covered a lot of trump rallies in the campaign. There are some of those people at each rally. Most of them, of course, entirely harmless. But, there is no doubt that there is politics in this because not only did he target a number of democrats or prodemocratic figures, but that the ones targeted were kind of a gallery of trump villains, eric holder, hillary clinton, george soros, maxine waters. Bret robert den near yo row. Exactly people highly publicized oppositional arguments with the President Trump. So this is going to be a highly politicized argument. But, odierno, we dont know a lot now, specifically about why he says he did what he did. Bret lets listen to president obama a short time ago on the stump talking kind of around this. What is at stake is a politics that is decent and honest and lawful. And tries to do right by people. And thats worthy of this country we love. It shouldnt be democratic or republican to say you dont punish political opponents or threaten the freedom of the press just because you dont like what they say or write about you. Bret the president has used lines similar to this but he kind of went down the line of stirring up violence in this speech tonight. Im not sure exactly which. Bret president obama. It is something we have seen in recent weeks where there have been these acts taking place from individuals that are threatening. You know, whether it was the ricin attacks of sending that to general mattis and President Trump or there was a bomb plot that was diverted that involved paul ryan, i think just this week. This attack of sending bombs to democrats and i think thats very concerning that when individuals do this its also disconcerting that we are seeing larger public embrace of violence or violent rhetoric or incivility. You know, you had antifa taking over Police Functions in portland. You have had some leaders of the Democratic Party call for public confrontation and incivility. Much more worrisome. You will also have people on the left or right who behave this way. Individuals acting alone think the country needs to, of course, be vigilant against that and its wonderful that the fbi did such a good job with the other Law Enforcement agencies but much more disconcerting would be the normalization of political incivility. Bret we can come to that conclusion, i think, fairly that our discourse is a mess. Both parties are to blame. Obviously, the president has the biggest mega phone daytoday and we cover it he took offense, clearly, that some of the coverage of this leading up to this arrest was pointing directly at him for a day and tweeted out overnight that republicans are doing so well in early voting at the polls and now he first tweeted out about cnn or doing so well at the early voting at the polls and now this bomb stuff happens and momentum greatly slow he is. News, not talking politics, very unfortunate whats going on. Republicans go out and vote. He was frustrated bye bye it which was attacked all over the place. I guess it isnt fair in some cosmic sense that the president isnt allowed by some people in their minds to be as mean to the press or his other critics as they are to him. But, you know what . Its the reality and its always been a part of the role of president that your job is not to, as the president likes to say when somebody hits you hit back twice as hard. Rather, the president s role at least historically pour oil on troubled waters use soothing rhetoric in times of conflict, to try to soften the political divisions all around us. And, so, he says people scream at him that he is being unpresident ial. I think he is being unpresident ial. And its just never going to happen. I think we have seen enough evidence that President Trump just doesnt sort of have it within him to take a moment of extreme tension and calm it. He tends to raise out tension. Its getting to the point where and in no way, shape, or form am i explaining him for the act of violence. Bret cnn did over the past day and a half. You know that. What i do think is fair is to look at that white house and say what has it been doing in the last 18 months . Has it been exacerbating political conflict and or exploiting it or has it been consciously trying to sooth it and i think the answer is pretty clear. I think its absolutely true that Everyone Needs to improve the rhetoric from President Trump on down. Is he known for insulting people and his, you know, negative discussion of the press whation urst is the media is poorly situated to talk about discourse. Spent a lot of time earlier this week challenging President Trumps statement that there were ms13 or maybe middle easterners in the caravan. While the media was busy going off on it the department of Homeland Security issued a report saying quote gang members and criminals with significant criminal history are in the caravan and that includes citizens from im quoting outside central america, including the middle east, africa and south asia that are currently traveling through mexico toward the United States of america. Bret took a couple days but they got that detail in there from Homeland Security. If the caravan actually does make it close to the United States border, i mean, the president does have to explore what kind of executive authority he can use about this. He is saying he is going to send u. S. Military, not national guard, active duty military, which still is limited on what it can do inside the United States. It could help operate drones, it could help build fencing. Bret logistics and let the Border Patrol. And by the way its another cause for the president to say, you know, having a barrier along large parts of the u. S. Border would be a pretty good idea.
