Just right there now, its moving here getting close to the South Carolina border. Winds down to 70 Miles Per Hour, the strongest sustained winds, gusting to 85. We still see this on the shore flow, not going down towards myrtle beach, off storm flow, that storm surge pushing the way to the beach, all the energy going to the ocean here. Thats where we are going to continue to see the storm surge come on. Stick around. Since he came on sure, its moved around 36 miles or so since 7 15 this morning. Because of that, the wind direction has stayed the same and the rainfall to totals are up. Rainfall inches up to 20 inches. Along the Morehead City and down just to the west of wilmington. A lot more rain to be had as we move forward here. Radar pictures still picking up really big rain bands on the outside of it. There is the center of it and you go and see these heavy rain bands. Very reminiscent to what we saw with Hurricane Harvey. Very far away from the center in houston. We saw all of the rain that caused the significant flooding beer these rain bands have been pummeling the area all year long. Heavy rain going over the same area time and time again. Over the next couple of days, we will see some spots, bret, 20 inches of rain. Eventually the rain will move to the shore. The rivers pressed sometime monday into tuesday. We are still getting whipped by winds and getting pelted by raines as you can see. The main drag here is virtually deserted because it was eventually underwater earlier today. Much of Wrightsville Beach is underwater thanks to the surging range of hurricane florence, pushing the waters over the Intracoastal Waterway accounting countless home along this 4mile strip of sand. When the stopping 90 Miles Per Hour and gusts upo 105. The storm is going to continue its violent line across our state for days and to be a major inland event as well. Florence is crawling now at about 6 Miles Per Hour, weakening but still a massive rainmaker, dumping 40 plus inches in spots, soaking already saturated land. In wilmington, a tree fell on a house, killing a mother and her infant. The father hospitalized with injuries. And the catastrophic flooding predictions are proving true in new bern where two rivers merge with the atlantic. More than 300 rescues have already been made and dozens more may be needed. Of residents failed to heed the evacuation order. The mayor says summer for us to the attic or roof because of the rising floodwaters. Strong rain blanketing a 400mile span and the dangerous conditions could delay some rescue teams for days. Our operations and logistics teams are on standby to search impacted areas after the exit of Tropical Storm force winds. Over 600,000 customers have lost power because of the storm. A number that could rise up to 3 million. Police warned residents that even if their forms homes were damaged by florence, the damages and over yet. Weve been through a lot of these, you and i. What about this one . Its still wet tonight. We are going to get this band of wind, several hours still to come. Rick mentioned the fatalities, four reported, that infant about a mile away was only eight months old. The father in the hospital, his condition is not known. The mayor here in wilmington it has been a great source of information. Hes telling us hes been receiving hundreds of emergency phone calls from 911 throughout the city, throughout the country. He says be patient, well get there. Medical emergencies, people trapped in their homes, trees down on the road. The big message for him this hour tonight is to tell people if you have left wilmington, if you have left the area, stay where you are. Give it a day or two call before they can get the power lines off the roads, trees off the roads. Once the residence come back in here, it makes the job doubly hard. Its very difficult for someone to leave their home and wait it out, not knowing the condition of the residence before its time to come back. Hes urging people to be patient and give them a little bit of time here. There is a curfew that goes in the night at effective 10 00 p. M. Eastern time. Goes from about 6 00 in the morning tomorrow and maybe some of this rain and wind blows out of here by then. The river, the cave here will still be high at this point. We made a historical mark for that river today. The highest point ever, bret, that surpasses matthew a few years ago in 2016. That surpasses hurricane hazel from 1954. Think about that. 64 years ago, and today florence made history. Bret quickly, bill, Hurricane Harvey in houston kind of slowed down too. Became a Tropical Storm, but because of problems a couple of days in. Is there a sense the flooding is that intense right now because of the rain and surge . You could be onto something there. I do not think will have a clear answer until tomorrow about midday. Keep in mind its still hard for reporters to get around, get information, get power lines down, trees blocking the road. I think its too early to tell. Harvey has been talked a lot, the storm from southeastern texas a year ago. Talk about hurricane floyd from 1999. That was the storm that came up the east coast and parked itself over North Carolina. As we know, the rivers, they reached a very high level at that point. Our top story at the bottom of the hour, Tropical Storm florence being blamed for four deaths in North Carolina. This system making landfall as a category one hurricane, but sitting in that area. The backside of the storm refuses to break. Very strong winds coming in off the side of the ocean. The rain coming in sideways. The wind is still Strong Enough to break off parts of houses along the beach. There is a staircase that used to be on that house across the street. Losing tiles from its roof, and its lost when you look down, you can see pieces of houses that were along the beach all the way down. Structurally for the most part better, but we are seeing its very tough to move around on the streets because of the debris, because of the water, weve had 20 inches of rain here. Thats because of down power lines. Its very dangerous. People here, theyve done an excellent job getting the warnings out because most of these houses have been boarded up. People have been going away sometime before, but its going to be difficult to clean up. Serious damage from the wind and the rain when the storm finally does move on from the carolina coast. Its been 20 hours for these conditions for hurricane florence, now Tropical Storm florence. We are in a bit of the law, and i mean by law when the wind hits you in the face, whats different about florence is how long it stayed. If you look out the intercoastal over towards the barrier island, you can see how the sea is still really rolling. What you cant see is how the water is being pushed in like a funnel for the storm surge about a mile up. Its all crashing into the marinas and the coastal area of atlantic beach. We were over there earlier. Marinas wiped out, which means the charter fishermen and boat owners who rely on the water will to make their living will not only lose their house but to lose their ability to make a living. This is going to have long, long lasting effects across North Carolina for more than 600,000 people out of power and still because this storm is taking so long to move on, we go through multiple tide cycles. This is low tide right now in Morehead City. This is above where things should be for high tide. Weve still got another few hours of storm surge to come in so there is going to be yet another round of damage before people can even think about starting to assess the full effects of florence, bret. What we would know, what we think we know. This relates to the special counsel. The special counsel set up to root out collusion between the Trump Campaign and russia. There has still been no evidence of that. One of the things related to here is failure to register as the agent of a foreign government. If the special counsel is interested in a failure to register for russia that deals with the 2016 election, he should start looking at Christopher Steele who was the british agent who was secretly hired by Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National committee to create the russian narrative and that was weaponized and used by the fbi. At the same time, he was working for russian oligarchs and lobbying on their behalf to the department of justice to the number four guy in the department of justice, bruce ohr. If the special counsel is interested what it was a sensibly set up to look into, he has a long way to go in another direction. Bret sometimes the president likes with what Alan Dershowitz as pure and sometimes he doesnt. Of course he should be. Nothing he could testify, because he didnt have close contact with President Trump, but they did have a contact the campaign. What they are looking for is self corroborating information that can be used against trump. He has to cooperate about everything. There is no such thing as partial cooperation. Bret the question at the beginning, should the white house or the president be worried . I think it should be a little bit. Sarah sanders is right when he says the crimes he was charged with in these cases have nothing to do with the president. The only thing and i tend to agree with ken starr, Paul Manafort might not have anything that touches the president. The issue is he had to give manafort something that manafort wanted to get him over something that mueller want an otherwise mueller wouldnt have given him a deal. What that has to be at the very minimum interesting. Whether it leads to impingement, id dismiss Alan Dershowitz his arguments. Declare donald trump as a de facto client to make it. Who knows what manafort is offering and who knows if its necessarily true. But it cant be nothing. Bret heres the president talking to Ainsley Earhardt about manafort. One of the reasons i respect Paul Manafort so much as he went to for 3040 years, ive been watching flippers. Everythings wonderful and they get ten years in jail and they flip, whoever the next highest one is. Or as high as you can go. It almost ought to be outlawed. Its not fair. Bret are you considering pardoning Paul Manafort . What he did, some of the charges they threw against him . Every consultant, every lobbyist in washington probably does. Bret at the time, Paul Manafort was suggesting he was not going to cooperate. Interesting because its so new. When you face ten years you are going to flip, but you will flip on anybody. Including the person on the top. We do not know what you are going to provide. There has to be something of substance. There wouldve been no deal cut either way. Anybody tell mike lawyer knows that. With regard to your point, this is a threepronged responsibility that mueller is tasked with. One of it is the russian meddling in our election. That could be where hes going with this. He has pressured and use this tactic to pressure mueller to come to this point right now. The big thing is being done was not in the room, but manafort was. Thats where hell have more information to know, frankly, if there was any collusion or conspiracy. Not about the president , but perhaps by members of his campaign. There is nothing then released in anything to do with manafort that has anything to do with russia collusion in the 2016 campaign. None of the charges in either of the trials in either of the situations have had anything to do. Sure. But that that point they wouldnt have made a deal. Mostly whats been happening here in this very expensive special counsel probe is an investigation of foreign violations. Might be more reasonable to expect he is going to cooperate against tony podesta is on the like that rather than something to do none of us know, but to speculate when theres not been one scintilla of evidence, not one scintilla of anything dealing with collusion in the 2016 election seems also a reason. We know its not collusion. But he was in the meeting. Nothing compared to the russia probe itself which is yet to be investigated and all by the mueller probe. Bret as we continue to look at all those investigations, the secretary of state is talking about the former secretary of state. What secretary kerry has done is unseemly and unprecedented. Former secretaries are not allowed to engage in that kind of behavior. Its inconsistent with what the Foreign Policy of the United States is directed by this president. And it is beyond inappropriate. I think everybody in the world is sitting around talking about weeding out President Trump. Bret secretary pompeo pretty hot today at the state department, saying that secretary carey is undermining secretary as it is now with regards to iran. Attempted to given my cynicism and think its a clever ploy by kerry to make his memoirs interesting. Which i think is a really heavy lift. His office is saying they briefed pompeo about his conversations. I know dont agree with pompeo on the surface but it certainly doesnt look inappropriate. John kerry has been doing these kind of inappropriate things for his entire career. When he was a senator, he would do these kind of stuff. Talk about violating the logan act. Kind of feels like hes trying to generate buzz for a truly unwhere the book if we go to the logan act, there was 1836 and not even a conviction about indictment. Was it up for g. O. P. In the senate thats that sent a lettr saying, hey, wait out the obama administration. You cannot have the hypocrisy, one president over another, one party over the other. John kerry is a private citizen. What hes done is not a violation of the logan act, not a violation of fara vehicle i dont care about the logan act i think everybody in the world is saying that.
