The president appeared to give americas closest neighbors a possible out. Nafta which is under renegotiation right now has been a bad deal for usa. Tariffs on steel and aluminum will only come off if fair agreement is signed. Bush eventually dropped tariffs as a result of punishing retaliation from trade allies. Bolton with the Business Roundtable says going there again would be a big mistake. This will cause huge damage across broad sectors of the economy. You may get a lit up help to the steel and aluminum industries. You cause damage across any number of downstream industries and any number of industries that export to countries that are likely to retaliate. In his talks with Prime Minister netanyahu today President Trump focused on trade and iran and the again stalled middle east peace process. What they wanted to talk about was moving the embassy to jerusalem in may. We were discussing whether or not to make that decision. Whether in fact the retaliation meets with retaliation again from him. Pretty soon we have a trade war. There isnt anybody i know of that thinks a trade war is a good idea. Despite the president s comments about trade wars being easy to win, they usually end up being a loser for everybody involved. My guess is the president will pull back and this will be another example of the president you know blustering talk and threats and so on. And and it ends up being less than meets the eye. Well see. He said hes not sure there will be a trade war based on his announcement that we expect within the next few days. Meanwhile we heard from democrats. I talked to several of them last week who were very supportive and happy about this idea. Most of them in that rust belt area that has been hit hard with a number of blows to the Steel Industry. We talked about worries from the Agricultural Industry and others. They said you know what, it is time for the Steel Industry to get a break. Were going to save these towns and these mills. It certainly set is up some very interesting showdowns. Well, remember this, shannon about steel. Steel has been a troubled industry in the United States for as long as i can remember. It is serious disadvantages. Competitive disadvantages that steel has with with other countries around the world where they could produce the stuff much cheaper and they too have Big Industries that that create extra product. They got to do something with them. And that creates the the situation of glut which we now have which is aif he canning the u. S. Steel industry. You have to have the capacity to get steel when you immediate it if theres an international conflict. But this has been tried before as john roberts said, president bush tried this with steel and he ended up lifting them after a while because the retaliation was strong and it didnt really work. For him to invoke is completely unacceptable, especially in canada and other places. Not going well around the globe. If trump uses this as negotiating tactic, it undermines the argument that he was a National Security threat to begin with. It is also true that the u. S. Has lower tariffs than everybody else. For people to act like this is, if it is unacceptable for us, it is unacceptable for other countries. They should not be able to do anything they want. The tariffs are a tax on people and theyre not generally a good idea. I thought there would be more cutouts than there were and canada and europe and now individual companies, could you imagine, thats like waving a red cape over here. Thats a lobbying free fall. And this idea whether it is negotiating the president is talking about this in terms of nafta negotiations. He had a threeparty tweet. He said we have large trade debt with canada and mexico, and nafta which is under renegotiation has been a bad deal for usa, massive relocation of companies and jobs. And tariffs will only come off if new and fair nafta agreement is signed. He goes on to talk about canada and mexico. Do you think the nafta negotiations may buy canada and mexico some relief on the tariffs . I think this is repositioning ourselves regarding china. He sees china as economic power house and there needs to be actions taken. This is a precursor to the much more important larger debate. What about the fact it pit u. S. Industries some against each other. We heard from farming and bottling companies. You help steel, youll end up hurting us. Typical republican sort of philosophy on this is youre not supposed to pick winners and losers, protecting some and not others. This generates an opportunity to go down a slippery slope. It is not just that they the courts took away the deadline because thatll come back at some point. This isnt an issue that democrats want to fix. This group of Illegal Immigrants is far and away the most sympathetic group. If you take care of those problems and the problems that led to the creation of the group, you lose the important political messaging point. Both parties have issueses they dont want to fix. This is one for democrats they dont want to fix. Everybody blames everybody else. The Supreme Court often not getting involved. They say it is not a deadline anymore. Theres not the push. President tweets this. It is march 5th and the democrats nowhere to be found. They dont care, where are they . Were ready to make a deal. No deals were able to get past the deadline. Who is ready to make a deal . Nobody. It needs 60 votes. Part of the problem is they got this pressure from the left. The dreamers were protesting not to get just against trump and the republicans but against the democrats. They thought the republicans didnt go to the map. They wanted a shutdown and clean bill. Legalize the dreamers that trump offered and no security measures on the other end. They felt democrats let them down. Thats part of the tension that exists. Democrats dont want to do anything because they feel the pressure from the left. Thats an issue for them. A pause here. For the dreamers, could you imagine a worst way to live than being in limbo. Dreamers are people, no fault of their own. A lot of these people are working. What a terrible way to live. They dont know. Always uncertain. The administration has said they would not prioritize going after these people. You cant be sure. They got kids and spouses and families. Really tough. Today a number of demonstrations happened on capitol hill trying to get in the Speakers Office and the house side and other places. Chad reports there were 68 people that got arrested today in trying to protest. It is clear theres people trying to to provide lawmakers with motivation although it doesnt seem like this topic is going to happen now. Somewhere else motivation. The issue of gun control and School Safety. The nord smart spent the weekend debating the bill with all kinds of potential amendments. I want to put up of what they got to here. This is the Senate Version of the bill. It is named after the school where this happened three weeks ago. It raises the age to purchase a firearm. More power for Law Enforcement to seize guns and ammunition if theres assessment about Mental Health or other threat. Theyre banning the sale of bump stocks. I understand they passed this now. Theres many more steps. The house has to come in. These are things that didnt get in the bill. Theres no ban on assault or assaultstyle weapons. Theres no firearms registry and wont allow localities to have regulation. Florida, theres still many hurdles to go. There are. Look, every state will respond in their own way. Thats probably the way it should be. And certainly florida is a hotspot for this. The question s the more we learned about the terrible tragedy that happened down there. The more we find out it was less about gun control and more about failures of Law Enforcement, the local and federal level. This does nothing to address that. What about the Broward County program that was put in place under the administration where they didnt want to arrest kids in schools. Well intentioned, but cruz should have been arrested and wasnt.
