He then flees on foot, blending in with the crowd, gets to a nearby walmart. Bought a soda. Then meanders over to a nearby mcdonalds and actually sits down for a time before deciding to go ahead and keep on walking. And it was only then, shortly thereafter, he was detained and arrested thanks to Great Police Work that caught up with him. Are you Nikolaus Jacob cruz . Yes, maam. Inside the high school, heavily armed s. W. A. T. Teams, police and deputies cleared out each classroom, one by one, rescuing terrified students and teachers who had barricaded themselves in hidden closets. Todays not any easier than yesterday was. All the victims families have been notified. Reporter thursday mornings update, the fbi confirmed it had been alerted to the suspect four months ago from this youtube post, who claims someone with the same name as the suspect said, quote, im going to be a professional school shooter. I knew that i couldnt just ignore that. So i screen shotted the comment, sent it to the appropriate authorities. The fbi conducted database reviews, checks, but was unable to further identify the person who actually made the comment. Reporter the worst high School Shooting in u. S. History, exceeding columbine by two fataliti fatalities. According to the school superintendent, the suspect arrived in an uber. According to investigators, he then shot and killed three people outside, then went inside, pulled a fire alarm and while wearing a gas mask and carrying multiple magazines, as well as smoke grenades, started shooting at students and teachers as they flooded into the hallway. He then fled. A Police Officer spotted the suspect in a neighborhood about a mile away, and arrested him. I pulled my vehicle over immediately, engaged the suspect. He complied with my commands. We offer these words, oh god reporter students and families gathering outside the school grounds, tributes and mementos for the victims. On the fence outside the police line, now hangs 17 crosses. One cross per victim, placed there by chaplain robert ostler. Theyre worried about pimpling, they shouldnt worry about a war zone. Reporter a vigil has now begun at the city of parkland amphitheater, an openair park. Were expecting many hundreds if not thousands of people to attend to pay homage and commemorate the lives of those 17 People Killed at this high school yesterday. And of course, express condolences and grief to their families who have had their families absolutely crushed and destroyed. It remains a very complex and active, humongous crime scene investigation, more than 2,000 people have been interviewed so far. More will follow. Also, the investigators are still analyzing the schools surveillance camera videotape, trying to even better piece together the alleged gunmans timeline, for example, why were only those four classrooms picked. Thats still something we dont know. Bret . Bret phil keating, live in parkland, thank you. President trump is offering families and survivors, quote, whatever you need. Whatever we can do to ease your pain. One thing he is not offering, at least not yet, a new dialogue on guns. Something others are demanding. Kevin cork is at the house tonight. Good evening, kevin. Reporter good evening, bret. The president is expected to visit the high school at parkland. We havent nailed down the timeline on that visit. As you probably know, his resort at maralago, he talked about what happened there yesterday and told americas children in particular, you are never alone, and you never will be. We mourn for all of those who lost their lives. We comfort the grieving and the wounded. Reporter a day after a gunman killed at least 17 people at a florida high school, President Trump pledged his administration would act. We are committed to working with state and local leaders to help secure our schools, and tackle the difficult issue of Mental Health. Reporter notably, the president did not mention the issue of gun control or new gun laws during his address to the nation. And his remarks today, attorney general Jeff Sessions stayed on message, saying the Justice Department would partner with other federal agencies. To study the intersection of Mental Health and criminality and identify, and how we can stop people before these heinous crimes occur. Reporter but for a time thursday, treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin appeared to move away from the topic personally i think the gun violence, its a tragedy what weve seen yesterday. And i would urge congress to look at these issues. Reporter however, later, his office clarified the remarks saying there was no daylight between him and the president. The administrations focus on the possible mental state of the shooter, rather than the weapon used in the attack, is not new. After a Texas Church Shooting that claimed 26 lives, the president said, this isnt a gun situation. After the las vegas shooter killed 58 and left nearly 900 others injured, the president called the shooter demented and a very sick individual. The park land shooting just the latest in a string of deadly violence to strike Americas School children. With more than two dozen fatal active shooting incidents since columbine in 1999. The apparent emphasis on Mental Health rather than guns drew a comment from blumenthal. Talking about Mental Health is simply not enough. It has to be followed by action. T the president has to lead or get out of the way. I would rather pass Gun Legislation than win the election. Because people die from this. Reporter the minority leader is also calling for more Gun Violence Research to be conducted by and funded by the federal government. That is something many republicans oppose. Bret. Bret kevin, thank you. A federal Appeals Court said the president s latest ban on travelers from six largely muslim countries is unconstitutional. The fourth u. S. Court of appeals said they discriminate against muslims because of their religion, upholding a ruling by a federal judge in maryland. The Supreme Court has already agreed to hear the travel ban case in april. Plenty of action in the u. S. Senate on illegal immigration. Is anything being accomplished . Chief Congressional Correspondent mike is on the hill today. Reporter the senate voted on multiple plans, but many fell short of the threshold with just 39 senators voting in favor of a take it or leave it pitch. This is it, in a sense. Only plan that can become law. Because the president said he would sign it. Reporter judiciary chairman Chuck Grassley signed the plan favored by the white house and leading republicans, and provided a 12year path to citizenship for 1. 8 million socalled dreamers, and more manpower and a wall. Family based migration to the nuclear family, and phase out the vis a lottery system. The president s made clear and i strongly agree that any legislation must also treat the root causes and reform legal immigration. It must also include commonsense steps to ensure the safety of the American People. Reporter President Trump shared his thoughts on twitter this morning, while the republicans and democrats in congress are working hard to come up with a solution to daca. They should be strongly considering a system of meritbased immigration, so that we will have the people ready, willing and able to help all toss Companies Moving into the usa. The Senate Democratic leader accused the president of meddling. Theres only one reason why the senate will be unable to reach a bipartisan solution to daca, President Trump. Reporter there was also a bipartisan plan negotiated by 22 senators which was attacked by the white house, including a veto threat and the president warning it would be a total catastrophe. And the department of Homeland Security warned it would be, quote, the end of Immigration Enforcement in america. The release was so over the top, and inflammatory, not factual. I dont think its going to be taken that seriously. Were the senate of the United States. Were the article 1 branch. We dont have to play mother may i with anybody. Reporter venting frustration with the president s inner circle. Mr. President , listen to the American People and lead us in congress and all will turn out well. If he turns this agenda over to the most extreme people on this issue, youre going to feel like obama and bush. Reporter dedicated to solving this issue, a missed opportunity. Offering a pathway for citizenship for 1. 8 million daca eligible people. Its disappointing, but were not going to give up, because the deadline is still march the 5th, and the clock is ticking. Reporter Senate Republican leaders sound reluctant to burn more time on this issue. White house Officials Say the fight now shifts to the house where they believe leadership is getting closer to getting enough votes for the more conservative plan from house judiciary chairman bob goodlatte. Bret quickly, mike, if the house passes that, that is more conservative than the grassley bill was that failed today. Reporter it would appear to have a lot of problems in the United States senate. Its just a question of how badly they want to deal or whether this becomes a 2018 Midterm Election, bret. Bret things in the west wing were 50 times what youve heard, and his former chief strategist is still not telling lawmakers what they want to hear, but he is talking to special counsel robert mueller. Chief intelligence correspondent has new details on that tonight. Katherine . Reporter a source close to the matter confirms to fox news the former chief strategist was interviewed by the special counsel this week. He testified in front of the house intelligence committee. They voiced frustration after bannon invoked special privilege on behalf of President Trump. There were 25 questions that the white house authorized him to answer. He answered each of those. He would not go beyond those questions in any of his answers. And thats frustrating to those of us on the committee. We have further steps to take and well be taking those. Reporter fox news confirms late last night, don mcgann explained why executive privilege covers the transition. That was not enough for the committees ranking democrat who claims bannons in contempt and his privilege claim is overly broad and unsustainable. We cannot permit a situation where the white house is allowed to script selfserving and misleading questions. Reporter the democrats memo about the abuses and when it will be public, the congressman had no comment as he walked away from reporters, bret. Bret katherine, what are we learning from the new interview from the former white house chief of staff . Reporter in the wideranging interview, Reince Priebus said theyre afraid of no one, and the behind the scenes drama, quote, take everything youve heard and multiply it by 50. Priebus said comey said he knew it would be a political mistake. Bannon apparently exploded with anger, quote, theres not an fing thing you can do to sell this, he shouted, nobody can sell this, p. T. Barnum couldnt sell this. President trump dressed down Jeff Sessions, blaming his recusal for the special counsel appointment. Priebus describes a dramatic chain of events where he ran down to the west wing parking lot, got in sessions black sedan and urged him not to quit. I dragged him back up to my office from the car. Mike pence and bannon came in and we started talking to him to the point he decided he would not resign right then. Justice Department Today had no comment on the allegations, bret. Bret okay. Katherine, thank you. The recovery continues on wall street. The dow surged today, 307 points. The s p 500 was up 33. The nasdaq finished ahead 113. President trump meantime is reportedly supporting an increase in the federal gasoline tax. According to lawmakers, who met with him wednesday. It would be the first such jump in a quarter century. The Fox Business Network from new york with the details. Good evening, deidre. Reporter good evening, bret. Gasoline taxes are exactly the same prices as they were 25 years ago. So if you use regular gas, you pay 18. 4 cents per gallon for a gallon of diesel its 6 cents more. That does not include your states gas tax which can range anywhere from 12 to 50 cents per gallon. With more than 220 million drivers on the road, the average car owner spends about 1 1,570 year on gasoline and 25 cents increase would drivers would spend send additional money to washington each year. They say republicans will not hike taxes right after passing cuts, especially in a Midterm Election year. Transportation secretary, elaine ciao, explained the idea as not ideal. The president has not declared anything out of bounds. So everything is on the table. The gas tax has adverse impact, a very regressive impact on the most vulnerable within our society. Those who depend on jobs, who are hourly workers. Reporter a white house official noted that President Trump has said everything is on the table to achieve infrastructure improvements. The president wants to lead a thoughtful discussion on how to solve the nations infrastructure problems. Popular or unpopular, looking at the numbers, a gas tax would pay for the Trump Administrations infrastructure plan. They calculate hiking taxes by 25 cents a gallon would raise close to 400 billion over the next ten years. Bret . Bret deidre, thank you. A hidden hazard of the war. Breathing problems from burn pits in iraq and afghanistan. Well take you there. First, fox five in new york as mayor bill de blasio and City Council Leaders reached an agreement to close the notorious Rikers Island jail complex and house inmates in smaller jails around the city by 2027. Bret Veterans Affairs secretary David Schulkin said the check is in the mail tonight to pay for part of his trip to europe last year with his wife. The v. A. Inspector general said schulkin improperly used Government Funds to pay for his wifes travel. Keep the attention focused on the important things, that i made the decision to reimburse the treasury to follow the ig recommendations. Im committed to doing what we have to do to focus on veterans and make this better. Bret colorado republican congressman and veteran mike kaufman had called for schulkin to resign. When shullkin said the options are not good, he said its the facts, not the optics that are not good. Veterans who served in the middle east along with some private contractors are complaining of breathing problems associated with large areas of burning garbage. Correspondent will carr on a littleknown issue causing big problems for a lot of people. Started having some periodic wheezing, and wasnt sure where that was coming from. Reporter veronica worked as a private contractor on an air force base for a year at the height of the iraq war. Her employer, kellogg was hired to work as a recreational and morale specialist. Landry and members of the military say they lived directly in ex to a massive burn pit, where the military and private contractors allegedly sent various materials from garbage to ammunition on fire with jet fuel. I was medically returned home for ptsd at the time. I did not notice that i couldnt smell anymore. About twice a year i started getting bronchitis episodes that were really bad. Reporter she attributes the severe medical issues to the fact she breathed in toxic smoke on a daily basis. Was there concerns there was no supervision over the pits . There was an active duty major who had a background in the health field, and he questioned it. But i dont know that anything ever came of that. Reporter more than 60,000 people now allege that they have medical illnesses, including cancer, severe respiratory diseases, and chronic pain after being exposed to burn pits in both iraq and afghanistan. I couldnt understand why this was happening to me. I never smoked in my life. I didnt know why my lungs had these issues. Reporter landrys Health Issues were only half the problem. When many private contractors returned home, they found out Insurance Companies rejected their medical claims. Landry says aig refused to cover her illnesses because she could not definitively prove they were linked to the burn pits. This is great for inflammation. Reporter landry has been battling to get covered for several years. Fed up, she finally asked the department of labor to intervene, and this january a judge ruled in her favor, saying her former employer and Insurance Company have to foot the bills for her past and future medical expenses. Aig did not respond to our request for comment. They say they operated burn pits safely at the direction of the u. S. Military. Its impacting veterans as well. Theyve created a burn pit regist registry. Some veterans tell us its too little, too late. Bret up next, well go back to south florida live and check on the conditions of some of the survivors of yesterdays School Shooting, and bring you the latest. First, beyond our borders tonight, russia is acknowledging five of its citizens may have been killed in a u. S. Strike against prosyrian government forces. The february 7th barrage came in response to an attack on u. S. Backed Syrian Kurdish fighters. Secretary of state Rex Tillerson said the u. S. Has never given those fighters heavy weapons. Tillerson made that comment in beirut, part of his visit with european allies. South africa has a new president. He was sworn in following the resignation of jacob zuma. The longtime president stepped down, after an ultimatum from lawmakers brought on by years of scandals. Just some of the other stories beyond our borders tonight. Well be right back. Bret our top story at the bottom of the hour, the accused shooter in yesterdays Florida School massacre made his First Court Appearance this afternoon. 19yearold Nikolaus Cruz is charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder. Many of those who survived are being treated at a hospital in pompano beach. Thats where we find chief National Correspondent ed henry with the latest. Good evening, ed. Reporter bret, good evening. If theres even a tiny bit of good news tonight amid all this tragedy, its that theres only one patient left in Critical Condition tonight, and that is really a miracle, given the triage that went on behind me. As the horror began playing out at Stoneman Douglas high school, the doctors at the hospital initiated a code green. All hands on desk disaster announcement they trained for just six months ago, yet nothing fully prepared them for this. We kept on getting phone calls, are you ready to receive more patients . Are you ready to take this one . Are you ready to take that one . Reporter the doctors here believe there would have been far more deaths but for the remarkable work of the Emergency Personnel who stopped the bleeding on so many wounds. A couple minutes i said, wow, this is actually happening. This is real life. Reporter there was also the bravery of one of the first victims who was identified, aaron feiss, assistant football coach and Security Guard who used his own body as a human shield to prevent more children from being shot. We had an athletic director, campus monitor, who responded immediately when there was signs of trouble in the school. Unfortunately those two heroes gave their lives for our kids and probably helped prevent this from being a worse tragedy today. Reporter students who survived the bloodshed give great credit to a janitor who saved dozens of lives by realizing when the shooter pulled a fire alarm, a large group of barricaded students were headed right at him. As a result of their heroic action, they saved probably all of our lives, about 40 of us. Reporter the 19yearold shooter was ordered held without bond, after a brief hearing. Are you Nikolaus Jacob cruz . Yes, maam. Okay, sir. You are charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder. Reporter meanwhile, people in this shattered Florida Community tried to come together with an afternoon vigil, to try to help ease the pain of so many, like this girl whose best friend was shot right next to her. Unfortunately she didnt make it. Reporter now, we should note this is one of two hospitals in the Broward Health system that helped out. All told, when you combine both hospitals, theres that one patient i mentioned in Critical Condition. Theres now seven patients in fair condition, and one tonight in good condition. So basically, a tiny glimmer of hope, bret. Bret that is good news. Ed henry in pompano beach, thanks. Mitt romney called off what was supposed to be todays announcement that he is running for senate from utah. Pushed off because of yesterdays shooting obviously. Hes expected to do it tomorrow in the form of a video. Whenever it happens, it will launch the former republican president ial nominee into a Campaign Many believe he has a very good chance of winning. Correspondent elisa kunya looks ahead. Reporter hours after the florida shooting, mitt romney tweeted, out of respect for the victims and their families, i will not be making an announcement tomorrow about the senate race. Romney is expected to announce to fill the seat of retiring senator orren hatch. The chairman of the Utah Republican Party is quoted calling the former governor of massachusetts a carpet bagger of the the chairman then received a call from romney himself. How did that go . Good. I started off by basically saying, i hope you dont hold a grudge because that was taken out of context. Reporter rob anderson was conveying what he heard from voters. Romney has been a utah resident for four years but his roots run deep. The romney name is absolutely gold when it comes to utah. Reporter his family traces back generations in the church of jesus christ of latterday saints. And credited with saving the olympics which was wrapped in scandal. Romney had a very successful olympics. Reporter there are four times as many registered republicans in utah than democrats, like jenny wilson who is running, too. I dont think utah in this evolving time and important issues in our state needs to be represented by someone who is not from here. Reporter romney has a complicated and antagonistic relationship with the president. Heres what i know. Donald trump is a phony. A fraud. He was begging for my endorsement. I could have said, mitt, drop to your knees. Reporter should romney win, he walks into the u. S. Senate much more than a freshman. Someone close to camp romney tells fox news he plans to make his announcement tomorrow. Bret. Bret alisa, thank you. Romney once called russia the biggest, greatest geopolitical threat to the u. S. Of the he was mocked for it. By then, president obama during one of their debates in an a president ial election. Tonight the Trump Administration is blaming russia for what he calls the most destructive and costly cyber attack in history. The white house statement saying the attack caused billions of dollars in damage, and was part of the kremlins ongoing effort to destabilize ukraine. The Florida School massacre, and gun control. Mental Health Issues. The legislative policy issues. Well talk about all the politics as well when the panel joins me after a break. Weve helped our investors stay confident for over 80 years. Call us or your advisor. T. Rowe price. Invest with confidence. Everyone has a thing. That binge watch over the weekend thing. More checkingin or checking out things. At t gives you more for your thing. More entertainment, internet, and unlimited plans. More for your thing. Yeah, thats our thing. We are committed to work with state and local leaders to help secure our schools and tackle the difficult issue of Mental Health. Mental Health Solutions are not going to stop gun violence. We need stronger gun violence prevention, background checks. We have not done a very good job of making sure that people that have mental reasons for not being able to handle a gun, getting their name into the fbi files. And we need to concentrate on that. Id rather pass gun safety legislation than win the election. Were going to find out what happened here, and what were going to do is were going to have a real conversation about how were going to stop it. Bret talk about action today, after that horrible shooting in florida yesterday. 17 killed. But what is real and what can potentially happen in the building behind us, lets bring in our panel. Judicial analyst judge napolitano, and amy stoddard, and jonathan swan, National Political reporter for axios. Amy, ill start with you. What is real . You know, nancy pelosi said she would rather lose the election than pass something. But whats possible in this environment . Oh, i dont know whats possible, because weve been here before. They didnt even get legislation out after the nra supported it last summer. Were not looking at a real opportunity here. Both sides continue to dig in. If you want to actually change this, you have to actually take away the weaponry with the ability to kill so many people so quickly. That infringes on one constitutional right. If you want to stop get in early and screen social media, youre infringing where people are describing these feelings and these plans, and intentions of photographs and everything, youre taking away their constitutional expression of free speech. Bret we hear what the president says. But behind the scenes what is the president thinking . Is there a thinking about a policy push . One advised me that this is theoretically a nixontochina opportunity. The nra supports him, he could actually go there. But i dont think trump wants to go to china. This is an issue where he actually instinctively understands. He said it in speeches, he says, common court bad, Second Amendment good. Hes seen it on the campaign trail, he understands it. And there was nobody who supported him more strongly during the campaign than the nra. I dont see trump acting against the nras interests on this issue. Bret heres the president on making schools safer. Later this month, i will be meeting with the nations governors and attorney generals, were making our schools and children safer will be our top priority. It is not enough to simply take actions that make us feel like we are making a difference, we must actually make that difference. I didnt get the audio in the first half, but i think hes right. I should also say, you know, i agree with a. B. That we are in a political stalemate. Just the second this news broke, i think everybody who talks about these things professionally, their soul just got weighted down, just with the prospect of the same arguments on both sides. Which i think are valid arguments and important arguments and all the rest. But if there is a stalemate in the political system, that doesnt mean that the rest of society cant adjust to these things. There can be an israeli style hardening of the schools. There are different tactics that people can take. I agree with a. B. That the if the government gets involved, and using ai, or something to monitor comments on the web, that gets into serious First Amendment issues. And well have him set his hair on fire. Bret according to the judge next door. But there are, you know this guy was saying, yeah, he said in a Youtube Comment section, im going to be a professional school shooter. Bret right. That is a red flag. It was sent to the fbi. Bret lets play that, the special agent talking about what happened there with the fbi. In 2017, the fbi received information about a comment made on a youtube channel. The comment simply said, im going to be a professional school shooter. No other information was included with that comment, which would indicate a time, location, or the true identity of the person who made the comment. The fbi conducted database reviews, checks, but was unable to further identify the person who actually made the comment. We do not know if its the same person. Bret judge . I essentially agree with everything my colleagues have said. And my heart sank knowing i was going to have to talk about this, because its such a tragedy. And i like the israeli model. The school doors are locked, and two or three of the teachers are trained to carry. You dont know which teachers they are. They do not carry openly. They carry silently, and in a hidden way. And how many School Killings are there in israel . None. That all can be done by the florida legislature. It does not require the congress. Congress cant do anything. Congress cant pass a budget, or daca, well talk about that in a little while. I think the president is whetted to the nra. Thats a nonstarter. And this thing called the Second Amendment, which theyve all taken a note to uphold and the Supreme Court has interpreted as it has in a very proindividual rights way. Bret is the Mental Health push, you know, that talking about this, something that they can get done with something else, and at least around the edges try to attack it . Well, theyve already passed some legislation that was pointed out, the 21st century that touches on Mental Health issues. Youll have the left saying this is just a smoke screen for the real issue, which is background checks. Everybody retreats to their camps immediately. Its hard to see where the Common Ground is. Bret look at this deal. He gets the ar15 legally. He buys it legally. He passes the background check. I mean, something happened. And that is why the gun control side will argue that the background checks are not restrictive enough. That you are still permitted to buy a firearm when you bret have been expelled from had problems. And that they would argue that if you cant drink alcohol, why are you carrying an ar15 around at age 18 . I want to point out, i know the nra becomes the shorthand in these conversations. But the nra, if you listen to some people on some other networks, they talk about how all these politicians are owned by the nra, and how donald trump is beholding to the nra. The nra doesnt give that much money into politics like other institutions. Their effectiveness is theyre actually organizing and communicating with actual voters. And thats what makes them so effective. Bret if you poll in these swing states, its through the roof. Thats not nra, thats thats not the nra, beholding to the voters who get you elected. Suggesting this is a Mental Health issue is a diversion. Its an issue of not enough superior firepower to stop these killers. If hes crazy, hes going to find a way to kill. If hes irrational and wants to kill, he will find a way to kill. Bret there are 300 million guns. Like a sitting duck. I talked to a senior white house official about this today and i said, what are we going to do . 320 million guns in this country, are we going to do what my country did and try to buy them all back . Its not realistic. Again, i dont see this heading in a gun control direction. Bret up next, breaking news. R to treat her frequent heartburn. Lucy could only imagine enjoying a slice of pizza. Now, its as easy as pie. Nexium 24hr stops acid before it starts for allday, allnight protection. Can you imagine 24 hours without heartburn . Attention homeowners age sixtytwo and older. Call now take control of your retirement today the motion is not agreed to. I thought we may be able to resolve this. I was hoping we could reach a bipartisan solution that could pass the senate, pass the house, and earn President Trumps signature. When the hour came to actually make law instead of just making political points, our friends across the aisle were either unable or unwilling to get something done. You dont get 100 of what you want in a democracy. Maybe in a dictatorship. You have to give and take. You have to compromise in order to make progress. Bret it was quite something, a lot of voting in the senate, nothing over the daca threshold. The four plans out there, take a look at these votes. 5254. The president supported grassley plan got the fewest amount of votes, 39 nos. Back with the panel. Jonah, it does not look like there is a way the goodlatte plan is more conservative in the house, even if they manage to pass it there. This senate is not taking that up. Yeah, i mean, i think the basic explanation for why we saw what we saw today is simply that everyone sees that their political interests are better served by not having a deal than having a deal. And i think one of the mistakes that the Trump Administration made i think thought their initial proposal unveiled in the state of the union could have been a final compromise position. Or something along those lines. But everyone seems to be negotiating with themselves, and then revealing a finished product saying, see how much we came to your position. Thats not how compromises work. Bret the administration privately, i think were thinking they wouldnt have anybody to the right of them, and they could hold the cats together. And then ted cruz came out and started talking. Every time somebody comes up with i think they dont make any sense at all. We should not be granting citizenship to people here illegally. For whatever reason youve got a whole lot of republicans eager and to propose granting citizenship for 1. 8 Million People here illegally. Bret i mean, they make the thing, and then i mean, he was a no vote from the beginning. Right. It doesnt matter what happens in the senate, because there are people who think exactly like ted cruz on the house side. They think any path to citizenship, to legal legislation even, is forgiveness of law breaking and amnesty. No matter how many restrictions, even massive overall of the illegal immigration system. Even though you had to have the majority on the house floor, you were going to lose the freedom caucus, lose people like steve king. Theyre of like minds with ted cruz and there are enough of them. My suggestion for the president is, to use jonathans phrase, nixon goes to china. Take daca off the table, extend it for a year or two. And resolve the other issues without this burning daca issue breathing down their necks. Bret it is hanging there, march 5th. The administration argued wheres your leverage then . Cobble together some sort of a compromise without daca in there. So you have no leverage . He has leverage because hes the president , and nothing can become law without his signature. But daca can be reinstated on a simple executive order. Bret quickly, next steps . The next steps are uncertain. John cornyn in the senate said we put this on the bill which is jargon for the big kahuna spending bill. Im not sure theres a huge amount of appetite for that, well see of the the next step mike what jonah said, neither base of Neither Party wants a deal. Its just a fact. Anything that smells like a wall, the Democratic Base wont want, anything that smells like amnesty, the trump base dont want. The hard right and hard left not righting bret this is why people hate washington. Right. Bret youre right, he could shift that. Very quickly, steve bannon, 20 hours with the special counsel, robert mueller. We have some reports that gates has agreed to a plea deal. Its surfacing. Judge, big deal . Big deal, both of us. Bannon was interrogated over a course of a couple of days by a panel of people who checked and doublechecked what he said in the previous interrogations. And as for gates, they dont give these plea deals out for nothing. He had to tell them something. Something that helped manafort or deepen their crosshairs on the president. Bret it seems like its coming to a head. It does. Its accelerating quickly. They only want to talk to trump at the end of an investigation. Bret panel, thank you. When we come back, the heroes from yesterdays School Shooting. You owned your car for four years. You named it brad. You loved brad. And then you totaled him. You two had been through everything together. Two boyfriends, three jobs. Youre like nothing can replace brad. Then Liberty Mutual calls. And you break into your happy dance. If you sign up for better car replacementâ„¢, well pay for a car thats a model year newer with 15,000 fewer miles than your old one. Liberty stands with youâ„¢. Liberty mutual insurance. Was before this goes to another community and another community bret live in parkland florida, a vigil underway. Remembering those killed and talking about whats next for the community. Finally tonight, they do train for this and yet even those florida fearless First Responders yesterdays massacre was beyond belief. As we started our response, we werent sure if this was a real event or not. Our firefighters share in their grief, they feel for them, they feel with them. Our First Responders can never unseat what they saw yesterday, so we will work with them to make sure they get the resources they need to get through this as part of the community. Bret thats all part of the grief. They see the horror up close, they go into that school with the dead bodies, their with the grieving families. These First Responders are in our thoughts and prayers as well. Thank you for inviting us into your homes tonight, we wish the news was better. Martha breaking tonight, the morning before the shooting according to the miami herald come the shooter told the friend that he lived with that he was saying its valentines day and i dont go to school on valentines day, but he went to his old school and he killed 17 people. Some of their faces we are beginning to see pictures of tonight and they are on your screen.
