Analyst howard kurtz looks at the media backlash so far but we begin with correspondent kevin corke on the administration now in damage control. And, kevin, good evening to you. And good evening, bill. For a man who prides himself on building winning coalitions and business and of late in politics, President Trumps remarks on charlottesville yesterday really left him quite isolated. That includes two groups that usually back him. After a wave of ceos resigned from his Advisory Councils following his response to the deadly rally in charlottesville, President Trump today reacted by abrupting dissolving the groups. Tweeting rather than putting pressure on the Business People of the Manufacturing Council and strategy and policy forum, i am ending both. Thank you all. A change in tone from yesterday when he tweeted that ceos dropping out were grandstanders and he had plenty of replacements. Members had begun to distance themselves from the Trump White House because of his contention that both sides at the rally were to blame for the violence that ended with one woman being killed. You had a group on one side that was bad. And you had a group on the other side that was also very violent, and nobody wants to say that. But i will say it right now. Drawing a parallel between the groups at the rally unleashed a torrent of political kreu678 from left to right, from former president s and governors, to sitting u. S. Senators. All in condemnation and burning the president for a tougher stance. That is an element that has reached on, grabbed on to them for their own purposes and doesnt represent the ideology or beliefs i believe in most instances of donald trump. But the president s suggestion that alt left protesters were part of the problem in charlottesville drew praise from former clansman david duke who tweeted thank you, President Trump for your honesty and courage to tell the truth about charlottesville and condemn the leftist terrorist in blm antifa. Its the latest challenge for white house chief of staff john kelly who stared at the floor as his boss launched into a stream of consciousness tuesday in stark contrast to his comments just the day before. In a two pronged approach to manage the fallout, the white house today named longtime aide Hope Hicks Interim Communications director filling the post vacated by anthony scaramucci. Fox news also obtained white house talking points about the president s response to the rally which encouraged surrogates to say the president was entirely correct that both sides of the violence in charlottesville acted inappropriately and bear some responsibility. And that the president condemned with no ambiguity the hate groups fueled by bigotry and racism over the weekend and did so by name yesterday. But for the media that will never be enough. Acknowledging that a similar rally is now planned for lexington, kentucky. Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell issued a statement tonight. In it he said there are no good neo nazis. He went on to say that anybody who backs their views dont espouse american ideas of freedoms. A not so subtle shot across the bough at a president who has gone at Great Lengths to criticize him in the past. Bill kevin corke with us tonight. Search, thank you for that. Despite claims of objectivity, many in the press had a field day with President Trumps News Conference right around this time yesterday. Now, some of that criticism went to hole new levels. Fox news media analyst and host of media buzz howard kurtz has that story tonight. Honestly im a bit shaken from what i just heard. The largely negative coverage of President Trump has reached an entirely new plain, a seemingly endless flood of moral outrage over his comments on the charlottesville violence. From this the Washington Post editorial the nation can only weep. So the network even newscasts spending three quarters of their time on the story. All of it in the case of cbs. Nonstop segments on cnn and msnbc. There were few if any disseptemberring voices. It was extraordinary and it was despicable. We expect the president to have some moral authority and donald trump has none, none, zero, none. He revealed about whether he can ever be a president for all people or just for white ones. A president of people of all beliefs or just the at right. He has united the country against the views that he espoused today which were right there on the edge of White Nationalism. Even many reporters felt free to castigate President Trump. The controversy eroded party lines with Many Republican and conservative commentators including on fox news also highly critical of the president. What trump did today was a moral disgrace. Too much eye makeup on to start crying right now. Its disgusting. So disgraced not just the Republican Party but the country. The psychological fragility on display at that disgraceful News Conference today were bonechilling. Some trump defenders see a huge overreaction. Mainstream media once again hysterical complete meltdown mode today because President Trump told some truths. While the media consensus was that the president was giving white nationalists unequivocal boost. Did he again condemn neo nazis. Was that lost in the media uproar over his argument that both sides are to blame. Taking down statues of confederate leaders could call for those to topple George Washington and Thomas Jefferson since they were slave owners weighs joining a long running debate. Stolberg had tweeted from charlottesville the hard left seemed as hate filled as alt right. Second thoughts should have said violent not hateful. They were standing up to hate. Its important for journalists not to engage White Supremacists and neo nazis whose violence led to womans death and counter protesters of even some of them that were violent. For all the sound after fury, journalists should remember that no story even about this president and even about race is entirely one sided, bill . Bill howie, thanks for that howard kurtz in washington tonight. I want to get insight from Crisis Communications from a man who has worked at world leader. Steve hilton is David Cameron and host of the next revolution here on the fox news channel. Good evening to you. Good to see you, bill. Bill we are told President Trump felt very good about his reaction in trump tower. Does he see this as a crisis or not . Im not sure that he does. I think he should but im not sure that he does. The reason for that is that this feels to me as if its part of his view of how he became successful, how he won the primary, how he won the presidency. Also hearing tonight reports that steve bannon is thrilled with the president S Performance in that trump tower press conference. I think the heart of it is President Trumps sense that the most important virtue, the thing that matters more than anything else is strength. And if someone hits you, you hit back twice as hard. I think thats what this has been all about in his view hitting back, the media, for what he considers to be unfair reporting of what he said on saturday. Bill you saw push back from the reporting of kevin corke and howie kirtz. What should he do in terms of Crisis Management if you want to use that phrase . I think the problem is that he may think that hes fighting an argument with the media. He may even think he has won an argument with the media. In the process i fear that he has lost an argument with the country. I think he has to understand that for all his supporters, all the people that voted for him, all the people that put their hopes in him to deliver Something Real for their lives, hes got to get past this present moment. I think the way to do that is to go directly to the most wounding and damaging things thats being said which is that this man, our president , is a racist and a bigot. That basically is what is coming out from all of that coverage. Everyone that knows him. I dont know him. I have never met him. Everyone that knows him says is he not that. He says he is not that. What he really needs is to prove that the best way for him to do that is no more teleprompter speeches. No more prepared remarks that people can dismiss and saying thats not really him thats his aides telling him what to do. And no more battles with the media where he is getting wound up and aggressive. What i think he needs to do is sit down and have an open conversation, sit down for an interview with someone and just speak like a human being about what is truly in his heart. And not in a confrontational way, but just showing the country what he really is if its true that he is not a racist and if its true that he is not a bigot, lets see that. You and i were sitting here watching the reporting. It felt a lot about the gain, did it not. Yes. Rands from the right and the left . The lesson will be well, who won the campaign. Again i think wrongly he would see that this is something in the end might strength him. I think he needs to deal with it. Bill invitation to sit down here is wide open. Thank you, steve. Nice to see you tonight in washington, d. C. You bet. Bill a memorial was held today for the woman that was killed in saturdays violence. About a thousand people were inside the Paramount Theater . Charlottesville, virginia. The father of 32yearold Heather Heyer called for forgiveness. A cousin said heather taught her that one person can change the world, her mother shared this today. And i think the reason that what happened to it heather has struck a chord is because we know that what she did is achievable. We dont all have to die. We dont all have to sacrifice our lives. They tried to kill my child to shut her up. Well, guess what . You just magnified her. Bill earlier today, President Trump called heyer beautiful he is a truly special young woman. She will be long remembered by all. The mayor catherine pew saying started late on tuesday evening and finished by 5 30 this morning before the sun came up. Pew had said she wants the statues to placed in confederate cemeteries elsewhere in the state of maryland. That same conversation is happening in numerous cities throughout the south where civil War Memorials are part of the regions history and culture. In kentucky, one city there is bracing for the possibility of more violence. Correspondent matt finn is in lexington tonight. [shouting] after deadly riots in charlottesville, lexington, kentucky mayor jim gray a democrat tweeted about his plans to remove these two confederate statues from doubt. The mayor tells fox news he defends the timing of his tweet which launched lexington into the center of the controversial issue and grabbed the attention of White Supremacy groups. Theres no perfect time to do the right thing. For two years lexington city officials have discussed plans to remove the statues of John Breckenridge and general John Hunt Morgan from the old county courthouse. Once home to chief side, one of the largest save auction sites in the south. This is a place where slavesy auctioned. Its not the place to gore phi and honor men who fought to preserve slavery. At a meeting tuesday, Council Members voted unanimously to move ahead with plans to relocate the statues. Nearly all the lexington residents who spoke agree with the decision. I have friends that have ancestors that were on that auction block. Lets pretend that you are the victim of an abuser and basically thats what they represent to us. Would you like for the abuser to be honored . But others worry extremist groups like the socialist workers of America Party which organized in charlottesville are taking advantage of the statue discussion in lexingtonington. By allowing them to remain where they are at, we allow people to make up their own minds what they mean to them. In a radio interview, Kentucky Republican governor matt bevins says racism is disgusting and heartbreaking but he disagrees with the mayors call to remove the statues. I absolutely disagree with this is an at a this isnta sanitization of history. Make sure Law Enforcement greets any violent protesters. If we see violence or we see an assault occur, we will make an arrest on either side. Mayor of lexington doesnt have an estimate for how much it will cost to move these large statues but he says this is a situation where money might not matter. Some lexington residents already complaining they dont want these statues in their neighborhood. Bill . Bill thank you, matt. Matt finn reporting tonight in lexington, kentucky. The countrys largest Transit System undergoing badly needed repairs, which some sees a an infrastructure crisis in america. Correspondent Douglas Kennedy takes a look for us tonight. A lot of times the trains are late. Sometimes they are cancelled. They are calling it commuter chaos. Pretty much any time you come in penn station on amtrak there is at least 20 to 30 minute delay. Sometimes an hour. And transsift torture. A time when at the didnt come at all. Its been bad. In and out of new york city stranded or delayed by track repair. Not fun. Its not enjoyable. Its hot. It began at this beginning of july and will stretch until mid september. Amtrak replacing 600 yards of track here under penn station. There is some extraordinarily complex track work. Ache track ceo wick more mone called the disruption necessary. This am rail was made in 1910. You eveyou are facing infrastructure thats been neglected for decades. Well, its had a lot of work done but it needs a lot more work done. 100 years ago our Transit System was the envy of the world. With Railroad Cars that crossed the continent. Look at the length of that train. Seats that took sacrifice. Mormon says its time to sacrifice again. Well, we obviously apologize for the disruption we are causing. We appreciate everywheres patience. Patience. I cant come from. I appreciate the work on the traipse to make them run better. We cant wait any longer. Its intolerable and it needs to stop. Unfortunately more mone says this is just the beginning. This station was built in 1910 and handling numbers of people that were never envisioned. Bill Border Patrol agents have found 20 immigrants crammed into a locked semitrailer at a check point in west texas. A Border Patrol spokesman saying the immigrants out of mexico, el salvador and guatemala were in Good Condition after they were found early monday, 85 miles southwest of el paso. The driver of that truck now facing a federal smuggling charge in texas. The attorney general meanwhile sticking to his word on withholding federal money from sanctuary cities. Jeff sessions went to miami earlier today where city leaders there have taken major steps towards cooperating with immigration law. But much of his focus was 1400 miles to the north in the city of chicago. Steve harrigan explains tonight from florida. Steve, good evening there. Good evening, bill. The attorney general went to the port of miami this afternoon where he spoke before about 100 Law Enforcement officials in praise of Miamidade Countys reversal of its sanctuary city policy. Jeff sessions contrasted miami with chicago. He said the two have similar populations but chicago, which is now suing the Trump Administration over its sanctuary city policy has triple the murder rate. The reason sessions said he blamed squarely on chicago sanctuary city policy. He said if you enter the country last week, with a criminal record, and get to chicago, for example, we will not even support deporting you even after you commit a serious crime against one of our citizens. Now, this is lawlessness. As it stands now, in Miamidade County jail, people can be detained an additional 48 hours. If their immigration status is under question. So far, 173 people, since january have been turned over to ice. And 70 of those have prior criminal records. The mayor of Miamidade County has said his primary motivation has been money. He has been concerned about the possible loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal aid for Law Enforcement projects, if he fails to comply with Trump Administration regulations. Miami is the first city, the first major city to overturn this sanctuary city policy and certainly here it has been controversial. Here in miami, especially since this is the city of mostly immigrants, we need to oppose these policies of trump. And this horrible move to the right thats happening in this country. That controversy here this week has only increased. Hours before being praised by the attorney general, here the mayor of Miamidade County took sharp critical words at President Trump naming him directly saying his handling of the events in charlottesville this week has been, quote disappointing. Bill, back to you. Bill thank you, steve. Steve harrigan reporting in miami for us tonight. But with tighter budgets, the people who play the music may soon have to face the music, too. Lucas tomlinson explains at the pentagon tonight. From the revolutionary war to military parades across America Today u. S. Military bands have been honoring millions since the nations founding. Military music is dedicated to connecting to people, both in the United States and around the world with relevant and public engagement. But a government watchdog says prove it. A new report by the Government Accountability office says the roughly 130 u. S. Military bands must now justify their 303milliondollar annual budget saying the military Services Approach do not include measurable objectives or performance measures. The pentagon says its actually 437 million, meaning it spends more money on bands than nato ally love i cant border spends on entire Defense Budget playing in some 38,000 events in a year, Officials Say measuring the value of these bands is difficult. But stress their importance, including, for instance, giving veterans a proper tribute as they are laid to rest in Arlington National cemetery [taps] we are out there three times a day. And the other services are right next to us. And we are paying our final respect. Anybody ever witness this, they would know how important it is for Uniformed Service members to bid these comrades farewell with the appropriate honors. Report also found u. S. Military bands have become smaller recently. The navy and air force are spending more on them. Members of the Armed Services committee have questioned why spending on military bands has increased in the wake of a Pilot Shortage and fewer jets flying. Bill . Bill lucas, thanks. Lucas tomlinson at the pentagon tonight. President trump taking fire over charlottesville comments. How is he and the rest of the white house reacting to that tonight . We will get our own reaction from the panel after a quick break. I want donald trump to understand its not about winning an argument. Its about bringing the country together. It is not about having some argument trying to justify these people on the left who went to a sweet town like charlottesville for purposes of bringing violence. He needs to make it clear he doesnt i mean, he has got to fix this and republicans have to speak out. Plain and simple. Who cares what party you are in. The president was saying that the violence people brought violence from both sides and violence isnt okay. But the blame lays squarely at the kkk, the White Supremacists and neo nazis who organized this rally, caused violence and are perpetrating pushing hate across this country. Bill how the day began earlier today. That last voice the woman who runs the rnc. We did not hear from the president specifically on this today but we did hear from the Vice President mike pence who said this earlier traveling south america. What happened in charlottesville was a tragedy. And the president has been clear on this tragedy and so have i. I spoke at length about this heart breaking situation on sunday night in colombia. And i stand with the president and i stand by those words. Bill so with that i want to bring in the panel. Steven hayes editor and chief of the weekly standard. Mollie hemingway editor and good evening to all three of you. Molly start. How is the white house handling this as of today . It seems like every trump story of the past couple of years fits a similar pattern which is trump says something that is in part incendiary or outrageous or even outright false but also coupled with that is very true that many people in the establishment arent willing to say. And then there is a reaction to what he says that focuses on what the media, usually feel is false or problematic in some other way, and they focus on that to the exclusion of the larger conversation and trump fans focused only on what they like about what he said that was true. They decline to talk about the problematic aspects of it. This conversation is not very fruitful right now from either the Trump White House or the establishment response to it. And just to take an example, mitt romney had a tweet last night where he said that something to the effect of these white nationalists are just completely evil. But the people fighting them are all pure of heart. I dont remember exactly what he said. This is exactly what is so frustrating to people that we cannot acknowledge just the reality that of course, everyone, most everyone should, of course, condemn White Nationalism and other racists and its also true that we do have aer is really serious problem in this country with leftist violence and even the inability of Republican Leaders to admit that reality which is just factually true thats actually just what happened even in this last weekend where you had violence on one side you had the murderous violence of the racist and also violence on the other side it makes it very difficult to have a fruitful conversation. Bill let me come back to your point here. Steve are they recalibrating today or where do you see this 24 hours later . I think their strategy today has been to stop digging. They didnt have the president out to continue to talk about this in a way that undoes what he tried to do on monday and in that sense i think they have made some progress today. But you listen to mike pence say that the president was clear and unambiguous about his condemnation here and you look at the white house talking point that you made mention of earlier that talked about the president as a force for calm and unity. Thats not only misleading and wrong, its delusional. I mean, thats not what the president has been. There is a reason that everybody from republican senators to senior military officials have felt the need to step out and say we oppose White Supremacists. We oppose neo nazis because the president himself hasnt been clear enough. He has gone back and forth. He mugdzed i muddled it. Bill characterized it on tuesday. If you talk to white house officials privately they will acknowledge this would didnt know the president was going to do. This we didnt like what he did necessarily. But, going through the motions that this is all part of the plan and everything is fine, i think undermines the longterm credibility of the white house and people making that argument. Bill amy, you have been in touch with Donald Trumps base. And what can you report tonight about reaction from them . Just looking at the poll overs last couple of weeks what you are see something that his support is dropping not just because independents are saying they dont like him. He has nowhere to go with democrats. They have never likdz him. There is a softening among republicans. This is showing up in every single poll from gallup to marist to private polling that we hear about. The enthusiasm is not there. And what the president does when he feels the enthusiasm is ebbing is he goes back to what has worked for him on the campaign trail, which is this im going to go out, take no prisoners, off the cuff, rock them sock them robots. The fact is its starting to wear thin, even among people who are republicans. Even among people who might have voted for him in the 2016 election. What worked as a candidate is different than what can work as governing. And it is becoming something where i think he keeps going back to that same well and its going to get harder and harder for him to pull water. Bill later last night the white house came in with talking points. Made public here. Two of them on screen here. The president was entirely correct, they say, both sides of the violence in charlottesville acted inappropriately and bear some responsibility. The president condemned with no ambiguity the hate groups fueled by bigotry and racism over the weekend and did so by name yesterday but for the media that will be never enough. Which takes us back to you, molly and the medias reaction thus far. Right. I wouldnt say it was unambiguous as steve points out there has not been clarity of thought in the president s statements. It is also true though that he said that white nationalists and neo nazis should be condemned totally. Thats a quote. Condemned totally. When you have a media report condemn white nationalists thats untrue. Also Republican Voters are getting very sick of. Republicans are expected to perform these ritualized denunciations where you have to say exactly the right thing in exactly the right way and not Say Something else and completely avoid that and then you will not be called a racist but then you are still called a racist. You saw that ted cruz and marco rubio came out and condemned, of course, these kkk, white nationalists and had you media people saying they were skeptical that they really meant it and seemed like they were posturing for 2020. Republicans are sick to death of this type of approach to our conversation. And the media and other people on the left should have thought about the damage they were doing when they called everyone from mitt romney to john mccain to ronald reagan, everyone a nazi or hitler like george bush because their words really cant be taken seriously. Bill quickly, paul ryan sent this out. We must be clear White Supremacy is repulsive. Bigotry is counter to all this country stands for there do knob ambiguity. Mitch mcconnell. American ideals and freedom. We all have responsibility to stand against hate and violence wherever it raises its evil head. As molly is talking you are shaking your head in agreement to what she is talking about. Look. There is no question there is a double standard in the media. What molly is referring to is a tweet by eric lipton a reporter with the New York Times who said he was cynical about ted cruz and marco rubio actually condemning donald trump or urging donald trump to condemn White Supremacists on the merits. He thought they were just positioning for 2020. So it was the case in this instance and in many others that if republicans do the right thing, theyre treated as political actors and when they dont do the right thing then they are condemned or criticized for being silent by the mainstream media. Thats an entirely valid point. Its a good argument. I just think in this instance the argument that matters most is the donald trump argument. This is mostly a donald trump story if you look at the kinds of things that he said first saturday and then he seems to calibrate his argument as you suggest on monday and then he undid it yesterday. And he undid it by saying things that, again, seemed to be untrue or misleading or taking liberties with the truth, however you want to characterize it and you talked about many of the people as a part of this rally were good, were very fine people. You talk to people who were actually there among the crowd and they say no, thats not actually true. Bill got reaction from them. Quickly, the Economic Council has been disbanded. I dont know what they did in the first place, perhaps there was some good there and there was some not. What have you found out about that, amy . Well, thats the whole point is i dont know that a whole lot of people knew there was Economic Council. But it compounds this idea that the president , who right now is sitting at a 38 Approval Rating does not have control over his administration, right . This is just one more not particularly good story on top of bad. And the question i see Going Forward is whether he can get that back. Is at some point are voters going to give him any benefit of the doubt . And slowly is chipping away at that. Bill we have seen this road before. And we know how it turned out. We are sitting here tonight. In a moment here, what to do about the hundreds of confederate statues and monuments scattered throughout the southeast. A big topic in Many American cities tonight. Thats up next. Qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq they tried to kill my child to shut her up. Well, guess what . You just magnified her. We should immediately destroy not remove destroy all the federal monuments in baltimore. You have to ask yourself where does it stop . Chanting] statues can be replaced. Lives cannot. Dont mistake restraint for inaction. No one is getting away with this. The statues that stand on our old Courthouse Lawn today also stand on sacred ground. The cheap side auction block. Thats just a sampling of whats happened in the last 36 hours special in durham, North Carolina and lexington kentucky in the end. These are the following cities since saturday that have reconsidered their own monuments. They started in baltimore late tuesday night, lexington kentucky now. Louisville, nashville, gainsville and jacksonville, florida. We also got this from democratic senator Chris Van Hollen in maryland who said i applaud the decision of mayor pew out of baltimore to remove confederate statues. This isnt a question of erasing history. Its a part of learning from history. That question back with the panel now. Is he right about that . Well, yeah. Its important that the American People get to make the decision about where statues are and if they remain up or if no ones go up or if other ones come down and it shouldnt be done by executive order. It shouldnt be done in the dead of night. It shouldnt be done by totalitarian mobs or violent mobs taking it down. Its important because how you habletion your public statues says a lot about who you are as a people. When you have it happening by mob rule, it starts with statues, it moves to books, it ends with people and the greatest most lasting i mean just today i saw that some people were trying to remove George Washingtons name from a park in illinois. This is not just about the confederacy. Its already expanding beyond that these are conversations we need to endeavor to have very calmly. Bill that point goes directly to what the president is talking about where does it end. Right. And thats one of the dangers is that the most powerful most greatest lasting document to our Founding Fathers is declaration of independence. Thats what you want to attack if you are the ideas of selfgovernment, free speech, free assembly, we need to work to defend them and particularly selfgovernment. American people need to make these decisions working together in community. Bill amy . Lets be really Clear History is written by the people who are the victors. People who wrote the history and put up the confederate monuments were one group of people. We did not hear the voices of a whole bunch of people as those monuments were being erected. We have a country where our history is getting retold constantly because the voices of people whose voices were never involved are now coming to the fore. That, i think, is healthy. If you think about anything in life, you dont want to just have the perspective of one bystander watching an event. You want hundreds of people to tell you exactly what happened at a certain event. And thats happening more and more. And i dont think its a problem at all to go and look at all of these places that were talking about these confederate statues and having the debate. The problem is we never did. This isnt just about what happened when these confederate statues were erected. This goes all the way back to slavery. This goes all the way back to the fact that we have never properly handled the issue of race in this country. And so these things continue to come up time and time again like confederate statues. We relationship off this ripd because we have never healed racially from what we have done where this country was with slavery and then it just continues to fester. Bill you wonder how many people who live have even stopped to look at these statues or consider who was on that monument or pedestal, steve. Are we erasing it or learning from it. I think molly is right. When you talk about tearing down statues in the middle of the night without any debate or any discussion, i think thats a bad way. That isor wellian, i think that is erasing history. That is not creating the type of debate we ought to have. Some of this stuff is on a caseby case basis. S it very complicated. I dont think there is one right way and wrong way to handle it i feel very differently to a statue erected to a confederate battle general in 1867 than i do in 1967. I mean, the intent of the statue itself matters. But i think we ought to be very careful in this country about going and eliminating entire classes of memorials to what our collective history is whether its history that we love and history we want to celebrate the american revolution. Things that are difficult chapters in our history like the civil war and others. You cant erase whats happened by eliminating the monuments. Bill thanks to all three of you. Steve, molly, amy, thanks. In a moment, when we come back, seeing might not be believing after all. We will show you why. Constipated . Trust 1 doctor recommended dulcolax.
