Taken control, the turkish president erdogan in hiding has pledged to fight off this coup saying the nation must gather in squares to give response to the uprising, just getting reports of explosions in ankara just moments ago on the wires. Back here at home, donald trump has made his selection on a running mate, indiana governor mike pence is that selection. But there was an interesting road to get to that choice. Carl cameron has the latest for us tonight. Also tonight, new details into the investigation into last nights terror attack in nice, france. We first broke that story on special report. At least 84 people killed, including two americans. We will go there live. But first, we have this story, the breaking story, out of turkey. A statement from the military just read on state television says armed forces have seized power. It cites what it calls rising autocratic rule and increased terrorism. Lets get the latest from grn correspondent laura wells in istanbul. Reporter it has been one crazy night. This happened about three hours ago when the military started taking over position, including bridges and using air power in the capital of ankara and the largest city istanbul with a population of between 16 million and 18 million people. It has unfolded and rapidly just in a few hours. Weaver seen the military take over state media, make announcement of a new constitution being drafted, i talked to one relation of mine whos on a boat in march morass. This is a town where president erdogan is believed to be at this point. That was said today after hes not been in the media for six days, which is very unusual for the president who seems omni present in turkey, always going to a function, making a speech usually on live tv on all the networks, it seems like at least every other day. Now, what im hearing from my family relation them in marmaras is the navy is now surrounding that town which is in southwest turkey on the aegean. Theyre not allowing any boats in or out. Theyre also surrounded that city. Theyve closed all the roads. He has talked to on private television a network, one reporter there. He asked his supporters to come to the streets. He said this is an illegitimate coup, that he was the head of the military and he blamed very strangely for those who are not familiar with this right now his arch enemy, which is an imam named pa tula guinen who lives in pennsylvania and has followers all around the world including and especially the police force and the military in turkey. And this is something that the president and also some of his supporters within his party have been trying to purge the government of, the security forces, and theyve even taken over a lot of their media and other private companies and made many a businessman who is a supporter of this imam in pennsylvania flee the country. Okay, laura. Thank you for the update. Well head back for any breaking details there out of istanbul. Were looking live at these pictures and still pictures coming in from turkey. We can tell you that the military is reporting that it has seized control of that country. Just in the past few minutes explosions have been heard in the turkish capital of ankara. Were getting words from the wires that military helicopters have opened fire over the capital city. Also, we are getting word that the turkish eu minister is calling on soldiers to disobey orders. We are having a situation here that is developing once again, two nights in a row, in a world hot spot by the minute. Watching this, correspondent kevin corke is at the white house tonight with reaction from president Obamas Administration to this takeover in turkey. Good evening, kevin. Reporter bret, good evening to you. Wow, what a couple of days we have had. Youre right, the administration watching the events unfold in aink array very carefully. You may recall just last year we were there talking about a great deal of cooperation, the president at one point hailed the relationship between turkey and the u. S. And particularly nato as a solid relationship despite differences this administration has had with president erdogan. Its also to point out we have heard from the National Security spokesperson that the president continues to be updated on the situation as it continues to unfold in turkey. Should also point out, brets being as you can pell imagine, this is a complicated situation because the u. S. Already has a Strategic Alliance and an established military Cooperation Agreement with turkey. But as i also said, the president has been critical at times of president erdogans leadership style, some calling it totalitarian. There have been a great deal of reporting that there are celebrations not just in turkey but also in syria. And its even been suggested, bret, that there wouldnt exactly be tears here if erdogan were necessarily out of power. That doesnt however mean that the relationship with the country isnt paramount. This is a major story, and well keep watching it as it unfolds from our perch here at the white house. Bret . Well head back for any news there. Kevin corke live on the north lawn. Lets get Quick Reaction from the chairman of the House Homeland Security committee congressman mike mccall. Mr. Chairman, we were going to have you hear to talk about the nice terror attacked and home land security overall for us, but i want you to weigh in if you would about what were seeing here and the geopolitical significance of it. Its very significant obviously. Turkey is a nato ally. We have an air base in turkey where the strikes come out of to hit isis in iraq and syria. So we want to make sure the stability is there. I think what youre seeing is tension that weve seen for years between president erdogan and his military, his military being more secular, president erdogan being a little more in the islamist side of the house. I think with the attacks at the istanbul airport recently with the isis attacks recently, with russia in the region, i think what youre seeing now is a Major Military coup in response to some of the these policies that have taken place. Right. And, you know, turkey has a history of coups before, military coups. You have 1960, 1971, 1980 and 1997 was a postmodern type coup. Its happened before when leadership in turkey has gone over too much, if you will, to the islamic side. Is that correct . I mean, is that what were seeing here, a backlash to president erdogans essential embrace of islamism . Thats my judgment on this. Ive been over to turkey many times, met with president erdogan. Theres a sense he wants to return to the sort of Ottoman Empire days over there. And remember, president erdogan sort of turned a blind eye when a lot of these foreign fighters went through turkey into syria to join isis and then fight against assad. He did that because of his antiassad sort of point of view of the world. But lately isis has blown back on turkey, and i think the military has seen his policies as a bit dangerous to the security of turkey. In my judgment, i think thats why youre seeing this coup taking place. We should say that all flights have stopped in and out of ankara and istanbul. Were being told by the state department there you see live sky News Pictures from istanbul moving there in the streets that military is taking to the streets. President erdogan on an interview said that the nation should be out in squares to fight against this coup. But the military itself has gotten to the air waves and state tv and read that they have taken control. Were getting word now over the wire thats military helicopters have been taking out the satellite dishes in ankara and that the state tv is now off the air, at least in some parts. I want to ask you, mr. Chairman, in the wake of the attack in nice and what were seeing now in turkey and basically a feeling that the world is not stable, what does that mean for us . How does that translate to Homeland Security here when you have these big events like a convention here in cleveland and in philadelphia in the next couple of weeks . Well, were seeing obviously chaos all over the region, both in europe, the middle east and now in turkey. I think the threats are very high, highest threat environment since 9 11. People are scared. I think people are worried about where the next attack is going to be, like the one in nice. You have the isis spokesman calling for vehicle attacks most recently. And i think thats what played out in nice. We saw the brutal killings on the beach, including children. The situation in turkey, again, i caution its a nato ally and insry lick air base being there, i think whats important to notice there is how friendly the military is with the United States. I think our military enjoys a very Good Relationship with the Turkish Military so if, in fact, this coup has taken place and is successful, i think moving forward that relationship is imperative to maintain our nato ally status with turkey and also protect that air base thats so important in fighting isis and the war on terror against the caliphate Islamic State in iraq and syria. Mr. Chairman, mike mccall joining us from washington, thank you very much on this breaking news. Again, were getting word out of turkey that the military has taken control. Thats what theyre saying, in turkey. The president , erdogan, is in hiding. He is saying that hes talked to one interviewer, saying hes going to fight back. Were getting new information right now. Facebook, twitter and youtube are being blocked in turkey during this time. Erdogan has just said that in an interview he wants people to take to the streets to fight this back. Joi join\ing you us Jillian Turner former staff member for the white house National Security council. Shes coming from new york. Here in cleveland, k. T. Mcfarland fox news analyst and in washington syndicated columnist charles krauthammer. K. T. , what are you learning out of turkey . Several things. If its military senior leaders, they could be in control by tomorrow. Erdogan is on vacation, not in hiding. When we think of coups we usually think the bad guys are coming in removing democratically elected leaders. This could be just the opposite, erdogan who was assembling more and more power at the expense of the parliament and courts, this could be a coup to really take power away from the authoritarian and put it back into a secular democracy. Yeah. These are the wires coming in. In hide being, not in the capital is probably what they meant to type. I want to turn to jillian, your assessment of where we are and what this means in the big picture for the u. S. And that region. Well, i was in turkey and ankara and istanbul in may, and the tensions were palpable even then. This issue has been brewing for a long time. What this military faction is going to say, of course, is that theyre hitting the reset button for the country, that theyre trying to restore the secular levers of power inside the country and to a certain extent this is the historical role of the Turkish Military. Theyve done this several times over the last century, as you mentioned a couple of minutes ago. Another thing here is that they feel that president erdogan is taking the country, dragging them off into a bad direction, away from secularism and towards a more and more islamist mode of governing and thats the main grievance here. More news coming out really by the minute. The Turkish Parliament building has been surrounded by tanks according to reuters and there are shots being fired at the Turkish Parliament building. The turkey staterun news agency reporting that military helicopters have attacked aink array police headquarters. And there are explosions being heard throughout the capital city at this hour. Charles, your thoughts at this moment . Well, this is part of the great intraislamic war between the secularist and the islamist, but it has huge implications outside for the strategic war. Our position there, the war against isis. I mean, it is true, turkey has been for a hundred years a secular republic, consciously so, and as you pointed out every decade or so when the country would drift towards islamism, the military would take over acting in the name of the republic and start all over. But it didnt happen with erdogan. Hes been in power for almost at least a decade and a half and hes been systematically dismantling the democracy. There are more journalists in prison in turkey than there are in china. And hes been change ing the judiciary and islam sizing the country to a degree where the military finally decided its now or never. The 1st of august is when the president appoints new military officers, and before there could be a purge so it could be erdogans allies, they struck. K. T. , you know, there is a lot of concern from the gulf states about turkey being essentially not an ally in their efforts against iran in the region, against the efforts of radicals in the region. The u. S. Has had an interesting relationship with erdogan. President obama saying he had a Good Relationship with erdogan, but in turkey it seemed like he was going over his boundaries, the kind of center that turkey always has about secular versus islamic. Turkey is at a crossroads of a lot of thing. Theres a crossroads between the muslim world, europe, democracy, authoritarianism, radical islam. And erdogan has had a very interesting role as isis has continued to send fighters as well as refugees from the region. They pass through turkey. They go to europe. They go back and forth. And erdogan has kind of looked the other way. So the question is, what is the role going to be Going Forward . What is turkeys role in the fight against radical islam . And also remember its a nato ally. We have nato troops there. Those troops are to defend against external attack, but theyre not there to prop up dictate rz and coups. And were looking live by the way at a bridge in istanbul. And again, getting wires coming in about the explosions in ankara. This was just last hour, secretary kerry responding to a question about whats happening in turkey at this hour. Weve heard the reports that others have heard. I dont have any details at this point in time. I hope there will be stability and peace and continuity within turkey, but i have nothing to add with respect to what has transpired at this moment. The white house saying theyre deeply concerned and monitoring things, stability, democracy, safety of turkish people are paramount. Waiting for more as you heard from kevin corke. Jillian, if this happens, if this coup is pulled off, what is the next step here . And since they are a nato ally, who is nato pulling for . I think the immediate thing thats going to have to be dealt with regardless of which way this coup ends up going over the next 12 to 24 hours is the reality that turkey is facing multiple security threats at once, is going to have to continue to be addressed. Theyre facing continued threats from isis on their boarders, pouring in through syria, as well as an internal threat from the pkk, which is a kurdish separatist establishment that wants their own seat of government. This has been ongoing for years, both problems brewing up consistently over especially the last six months or so, i would say. And no matter who takes the reins of power next, whether erdogan seems to regain a Firm Foothold or whether this military faction increases its hold over the reins of power, the situation is dire either way. Charles, last word here. President erdogan has vowed to fight back and retal yaiate agat illegal action. If it goes the other way and erdogan does gain ground and holds off this military coup, what can we expect, retaliation, a lot of crackdown, even more than weve seen against human rights in turkey . Yes, i think so, and there would be increasing more rapid islam sization. That would be a terrible outcome. Look, what were seeing here is a replay of what happened in egypt. Islamists are elected. Islamists are dismantling the democracy. The military stages a coup. We dont like coups but in the end that was probably the best outcome. Lets hope thats whats going to happen in turkey. Our government cant say it, but i can. We should hope that the militaryish the secularists are the ones who prevail. Charles, k. T. , jillian, thank you very much for being here. We will continue to monitor the breaking situation out of turkey, again, a military coup under way there. Meantime, donald trump makes his decision. We will meet the gops number two man to be and picking up the pieces after another devastating terror attack in france. We go live to nice on a busy night when we come back. [ baseball bat cracks ] this is a fox news alert. Were in cleveland, site of the Republican National convention tonight, which obviously begins monday. Theres plenty of news right now, and heres the news that weve been covering for the top of this show. A military coup in turkey, happening right now. However, breaking news over the wires that the senior turkish officials, again, this is turkish officials loyal to president erdogan, are claiming that theyre gaining control over elements trying to overthrow the government within the military. Now, this is quoting from turkish officials. We dont know the accuracy of that. Were trying to get more sense on the ground. But there are still explosions happening in the ankara. We will continue to monitor this breaking story throughout the night. Now politics. Donald trump has selected indiana governor mike pence as his running mate officially. The announcement was somewhat muted today because of the france attack last night first and now the military coup in turkey. But the choice and the rollout really a story in and of itself. Chief Political Correspondent carl cameron is at trump tower in new york tonight. Good evening, carl. Reporter hi, bret. And i literally got a phone call from mr. Trump just moments ago to say he did not waver over mike pences selection as the Vice President. The postponement today was because of the attack in france. He said once hes made the commitment to pence hes always been with him. Having said that, the worst kept secret on the campaign trail for several days was made official this morning. Donald trump announced his running mate on twitter, quote, im mrdzpleased to announce iv chosing mike pence as my running mate. News Conference Tomorrow at 11 00. Pence spoke publicly today as the running mate for the first time. Very honored, humbled, grateful. What will you speak to mr. Trump about that . Looking forward to meeting with the trumps, talking about our plans for tomorrow and every day between now and election day. Reporter pence has disagreed with trumen on a number of issues over the years, he spoke out on the ban on muslim visitors and immigrants last year. Quote, calls to ban muslims are offensive. He is a Strong Partnership with trade. Trade means jobs but trade also means security. Pence disagreed when trump said women who get abortions should be punished and pence frowned on trumps criticism of the judge overseeing trump university. House Speaker Paul Ryan issued a statement saying, quote, mike pence comes from the heart of the conservative movement and the heart of america. As fox news reported yesterday, trump was unhappy with all the leak s about pence and complaind throughout day. He wavered over the choice and lk balked on the pick even as pence was spay staying in new york last night. I havent made my final final decision. I mean, ive got three people that are fantastic. Reporter gingrich last night amplifieied trumps rhetoric. Western civilization is in a war. We should frankly test every person here who is of a muslim background and if they believe in sharia, they should be deported. Reporter in cleveland last night, trumps foes last hope of passing a rule that would allow delegates to vote for someone other than trump failed. Trumps Campaign Manager says the Never Trump Movement dead. It was never very large. At least as far as the convention was concerned. It was a bunch of rogue malcontent delegates. Reporter and spite widespread reportings about Donald Trumps upset about the rollout yesterday, just moments before this report, mr. Trump called to say once he made the commitment to mike pence last night, it was solid, and he pointed out that he prides loyalty and hes sticking with his guy and the idea that he wavered is really an attempt by some he argues to sort of discredit mike pence and give him a hard time, even before hes publicly revealed with donald trump tomorrow 11 00 here in manhattan. Bret . Obviously many stories about that possible wavering, and obviously you talked to the presumptive nominee himself. Carl, thank you. Lets get reaction tonight to this choice of mike pence. Fox news sunday anchor Chris Wallace joins me here in cleveland. Chris, what do you think . Well, i think it says a couple of things about what donald trump and the people around him think is most important. One is a safe choice, a relatively noncontroversial choice. Youve had an awful lot of tumult with donald trump and this is a way to say, we may have a disruptor at the top of the ticket, we wont have two disruptors. It also is a statement it seems to me that theyre trying to solidify their base, the conservative base, the social conservative base, and to come out of this convention as the united party. Trump has about 80 republican support. He needs 90 . Thats the strong side, the pluses of pence. The negative or at least the potential negatives are that he doesnt appeal to a lot of the people that trump is also going to need, minorities, women, socially moderate people. Hes a very conservativconse socially conservative politician when it comes to abortion, gay rights, planned parenthood, a number of those issues. Hes not going to help trump win people who care about those issues over. And well have many days to talk about pence, including on your show this weekend with paul manafort, the campaign chair. I want to turn, though, to turkey and whats happening here, the breaking news. Were still getting these reports that the military firing on different positions inside anka ankara. Weve got pictures coming out of our Sister Network sky news, and you can see the people taking to the streets. Your reaction to this and the potential geopolitical fallout. Well, i thought it was very interesting what Jillian Turner said, and thats the idea that we normally think of a coup as the bad guys taking power from the democrats. In fact, erdogan, the president of turkey, has been moving more and more in fact thats a statement thats been made by turkish reporters on the march to dictatorship. He has cracked down on media. Hes cracked down on the judicial system. Hes cracked down on the military. And cracked down on human rights. And so to some degree, this may be exactly what the military is saying, which is an attempt to restore democracy and restore human rights in that country. And if thats the case and given what weve heard about the close relationship between the Turkish Military and the american military, this may strengthen our relationship Going Forward in terms of nato and in terms of fighting the islamists in isis and in the middle east rather than jeopardizing that. You also have a really good panel sunday. Well, thats right. And you know, we have a star on that panel, and thats you. Yes, we are going to have as you say paul manafort. Were also going to have reince priebus, the chair of the party. Also security in the wake of the nice attack and a Panel Featuring bret bair. Thank you. The day after. We go live to nice, france, after the terrorist attack after a quick break. Welcome back to cleveland, site of next weeks Republican National convention. Breaking news all over the place. Now to france and the search for answers following last nights horrific terror attack in nice. 84 people are dead, many others seriously injured. French officials are trying to determine what motivated the attacker who apparently was not on anyones terror radar, although islamic terrorism is suspected. Hes not tied to any one group were told by authorities. Correspondent Benjamin Hall is in nice tonight. Hello, benjamin. Reporter yeah, hi bret. Bret, theres a real sense of shock here in nice, a sense that if it could happen here, somewhere so innocent, it could happen almost anywhere, in europe and anywhere in the world and also that a soft target as weve seen here is almost impossible to defend. Thursday evening was a soft target. It was a brutal attack on innocent families celebrating french independence day. It was soon after 11 00 p. M. When the 31yearold french tunisian drove a 19ton white rental truck through the crowds mowing down women and children. Onlookers describe the chaos. It looked like a stampede of cows had run through. Tables knocked over. Broken glass. Broken chairs. Ceramic. It just it its hard to imagine how terrified people were. Reporter the man was known to police, not for his connections to radical islam but instead for other petty crimes. He had been convicted of armed robbery, Domestic Violence, and making threats. And its been reported that he had recently lost his job and was getting divorced. Somehow he was able to approach the crowds in the vehicle before suddenly accelerating while at the same time shooting from the cab with a handgun. Other guns in his possession turned out to be fake. Footage of the attack has been widely shown on internet, some of it too brutal to air. But amid the carnage there are also moments of bravery, including this one as a motorcyclist rode alongside the truck before trying to get into the cab. The persons fate is unknown. 84 are now known to have died with at least 25 others on life support. Today french president fran wau holland visited the wounded and appealed for unity. Translator we are facing a long struggle because we have an enemy that will continue to attack all people in all countries that hold freedom as an essential value. Reporter later in the day, however, he visited memorials and was booed by the public, and that is because many french citizens feel he has done little to protect them. Time and time again, france has been victim ever sucs of such a from paris in november to smaller attacks by lone actors. H h hollande has said we need to address core issues in syria and iraq and only by addressing those, bret, can they hope to eradicate this hatred, an interesting thing for a world leader to say. Back to you. Benjamin live in nice early saturday morning. Last nights terror attack there has left an already bruised nation even more battered. My colleague bill hammer is also in nice tonight. Hello, bill. Reporter bret, good evening to you. We are only 27 days until another national tragedy. Three times in 18 months, this country of france has been struck. Were along the promenade here. Its 12 30 in the evening. It was twech27 hours ago when t fireworks celebration was under way for bastille day. Thousands of people were streaming along this black pavement from all over the country of San Francisco afranc the world, all continents on the planet represented here last night when that 19ton truck passed a Police Security barrier and slammed on the accelerator. Some of the witnesses here, bret, describe him driving in a way where he tried to hit as many people as possible. 1. 2 miles in that truck before he was finally shot to death and brought to a fatal end. What are we learning about him tonight . He was born in tunisia, raised here in nice, france. Age 31 mohammad bullock as we just heard. He had a rap sheet, Domestic Violence from 4 years ago, this past march assault charges. He was not given prison time, but he he could have gone to prison for a period of six months. That did not happen. We also know he drove past police according to reports acting as if he was delivering ice cream to the children that were nearby. Once he got past that point, again, he hit that accelerator. Tonight, some of the wounded, there are 25 on life support, there are another 25 listed in critical condition. We mentioned this number of 84 dead and more than 200 wounded. Those numbers will change throughout the night because right now those victims need all the help they can get, bret. Back to you in cleveland. Bill hemmer live in nice. Bill, thank you. Just breaking news out of turkey, that they are saying that this military coup is being pushed back by the erdogan forces and that they are starting to attack some of those groups that are claiming they have taken over the country. Still hearing explosions, large explosions, in the turkish capital of ankara. Were monitoring this situation. We have been told the president has been briefed and we expect some more out of the white house as well. Breaking news tonight. And still ahead, the 28 secret pages of a congressional 9 mrechb report 11 report, do they implicate saudi arabia in the worst terror attack on u. S. Soil . Geico motorcycle, great rates for great rides. Test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test i had so many thoughts once i left the hospital after a dvt blood clot. What about my wife. What were building together. And could this happen again . I was given warfarin in the hospital, but wondered, was this the best treatment for me . I spoke to my doctor and she told me about eliquis. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. Not only does eliquis treat dvt and pe blood clots. But eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. Knowing eliquis had both. Turned around my thinking. Dont stop eliquis unless you doctor tells you to. Eliquis can cause serious, and in rare cases, fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Eliquis treats dvt pe blood clots. Plus had less major bleeding. Both made switching to eliquis right for me. Ask your doctor if its right for you. It was a long time comingtion but tonight we are getting a chance to go over a chapter of history that has been secret up until now. It took years to get 28 pages of a congressional report released discussing allegations that saudi arabia had a hand in the 9 11 attacks in some way, shape or form. Tonight we bring back correspondent kevin corke at the white house to show us whats inside. Reporter was the saudi government involved in any way in the 9 11 attacks . Directly or indirectly. The previously classified 28 pages of the 2002 congressional report on 9 11 suggests the answer is yes. The documents released today by the House Intelligence Committee confirm suspicions that the 9 11 terrorists most of whom were saudi nationals likely received support from saudi intelligence officers. One section of the report states, quote, while in the United States, some of the september 11th hijackers were in contact with and received support or assistance from individuals who may be connected to the saudi government, saying again later, quote, there is information primarily from fbi sources, that at least two of those individuals were alleged by some to be saudi intelligence officers. White house officials warn that the information in the 28 pages which still has 156 redactions was only preliminary intelligence. These pages, while they dont shed any new light or change any of the conclusions about responsibility for the 9 11 attacks, they are consistent with the commitment to transparency that the administration has tried to apply to even sensitive National Security issues. Reporter on capitol hill, Intelligence Committee chairman devin newness drilled down saying, in his statement, its important to note that this section does not put forward vetted conclusions but rather unverified leads that were later fully investigated by the intelligence community. This is just a start. Reporter jack quinn is a lawyer representing family members of 9 11 victims who have brought a lawsuit against the saudi government alleging it gave Financial Support to al qaeda. These 28 pages are, you know, a small sliver of the evidence thats been amassed and that exists and a great portion of which is still not been disclosed going to the question who and what was behind the 9 11 attack on the United States of america. There is no saudi government involvement or involvement by saudi officials in the events of 9 11. Reporter a strong denial from the saudis right there. Bret, it may surprise some americans to learn that the white house and the saudi government agree on one thing, and that is their opposition to justice against sponsors of terrorism act. And if that made its way through congress and were signed by a president down the line could hold the saudi government, for example, financially responsible to 9 11 families. The white house says that would be be a very bad idea. Bret . Kevin, thank you. Just breaking news out of turkey. Experts saying that this may be a failed coup. People taking to the streets listening to erdogan, no real military leadership in this coup. Erdogan may be more powerful and brutal if he survives this coup. Breaking news right now out of ankara and istanbul and you see people if the streets. Next up, reaction to the selection of mike pence as Donald Trumps running mate. And thats how it went down. There was more to it. Lets welcome in our panel here from cleveland. Steve hayes, Senior Writer for the weekly standard. And charlie hurt Political Columnist for the washington times. This choice of pence, charlie . You know, this probably is the untrumpiest choice of the names that we have had bandied about. Its hard to see you have the worlds most exciting president ial candidate picking the least exciting president ial candidate. Its also i dont know strategically how this helps donald trump because you are talking about a guy its kind of hard to see mike pence as a long record in politics going out there defending donald trump in all the ways that he is going to have to defend donald trump. But, that said, he is clearly picked somebody who has pretty good conservative bona fides. He stood up to his party and stood up to george w. Bush against no child left behind. And then later he was one of just 25 House Republicans who stood up against medicare prescription benefits. All of these things that took some daring and earns him a lot of credit among conservatives. Karen . I think there are two big goals for the republicans this week. One is to make donald trump sort of more popular and acceptable to the country. The other is to heal a party that has had very, very rough primary season. And i think that mike pence was probably the choice to do that. I can tell you that people i have talked to here are feeling very, very reassured. This is ending a signal to the donor class, the establishment class its going to be possible for everybody to get on board. Steve, there was a sense, this is a stable pick, a safe pick. Lets leave the process how we got to this pick and the rollout out. Helps him and hurts him on the campaign trail. I think on balance, its a good pick for donald trump for some of the reasons that both charlie and karen have mentioned. It will be reassuring to donors. Im thinking about for the next four months as donald trump makes his case to the country. People are going to see it w like a less risky choice to pick donald trump and mike pence with pick alongside him. Pence presents well in public. He is a conservative. I would say he earned a conservative reputation in congress. Its been sullied a bit with some of the decisions he has made as governor, expanding medicaid. His inability really to defend his religious freedom decision. The choice to have sort of a state run news outlet which was bizarre episode. But, on balance, i think this is a pretty good pick for donald trump. It will have that reassuring effect. Dangerous world with all that we are seeing happening, he does have some Foreign Policy experience from capitol hill. That absolutely helps. I think the biggest thing for members of congress that theyre looking for. They have campaigns that they have got to run this time too. They often turn to the president ial candidate of their party to help them raise that money and mike pence is the guy that will do that for them. Panel, thank you. Breaking news tonight obviously.
