Tapped South Carolina congressman trey gowdy to lead the investigation. Citing his experience as a prosecutor. His zeal for the truth makes him the ideal person to lead this panel. I know he shares my commitment to get to the bottom of this tragedy and will not tolerate any stone walling from the Obama Administration. He has relationships on the both sides of the aisle as being fair, tough, but fair, and hes just the ideal person to lead this select committee. The white house dismissed the republicans leadership decision to take the benghazi discussion to the next level. Its a Conspiracy Theory based on a Conspiracy Theory. The speaker called for a select committee. Citing the administrations failure to comply with congressional subpoenas. These documents reviewed by fox news show there may be other problems. Two emails from september 14th, 2012 were released as a result of a federal lawsuit by the conservative Group Judicial watch while most of the document was redacted, the name were not. But the same email sent to capitol hill had the names dropped. Why is it they are redacting the names for us and not for Judicial Watch . Its because they dont want the Oversight Committee and the United States congress to understand who was involved in these discussions and when. While fox news has not reviewed all of the documents sent to congress, the same pattern is found in the september 12th email. The Judicial Watch document has fewer redactions and there were other discrepancies. This unclassified email was retroactively classified by the state department. While the Judicial Watch copy was marked secret, the capitol hill copy was mashlinged confidential. They saw the same thing when Osama Bin Laden was killed by navy s. E. A. L. S. For example, a body wrapped in a burial shroud, theres nothing classified about that. While addressing none of the allegations as part of its defense, the state Department Released the email that tried to shape the public perception. They are undecided about the select committee and whether she they should be involved. Senior political analyst brit hume joins us now to discuss what we could learn from the committee and what we may never know. In his briefing today, jay carney refused to say if the white house would cooperate with that new House Committee investigating benghazi and he complained that they have already been seven such investigations. The facts he said will not change. Hes right about that but the problem is we still dont know the facts. We still dont know exactly where in the white house the president was that night or what he was doing apart from being briefed and expressing a general wish that our diplomatic posts shubed secured. Nor do we know exactly what then secretary of state clinton did that iet or where she was. And we certainly dont know where susan rice came up with her assertion days after the attack that it all stemmed from a protest that got out of hand in reaction to an internet video. Yes, secretary clinton did make a vague reference to that video in the statement the night of the attack. In less than 24 hours, the top clinton aide had laid the attack on terrorist al that rhea. Susan rice and president obama and clinton talk about the video anyway. Suggesting it, not terrorism triggered the attacks. That did not fit the facts, but it certainly fit the political need for a president up for reelection. What about the select committee, if democrats dont choose to join and cooperate with it and to put people on this panel, what does that mean . It will hurt the investigation. This investigation is not being conducted in the usual atmosphere when such a committee is formed. Usually theres a huge media storm going on, participation becomes kind of a political necessity for people in both parties, thats not the case here. If the democrats choose not to play, it will be play out as a totally partisan investigation. On the other hand, they may want to put members on it as part of a rebuttal squad. Now to the escalation of fighting in ukraine. Dozens have died since friday in clashes between pro Russian Forces and ukrainian troops and protesters. White house Officials Say they are extremely concerned. The evolving debate about how the west should respond. Reporter three weeks before crucial national elections, the violence in ukraine continues. Pro russian protesters said a number of people were killed and injured today, including this mans daughter, the victim of a stray bullet. The concern is that the protesters with Russian Support are june mining the may 25th vote at least in eastern ukraine. Yes, were very concerned and i think weve made clear as russia escalates its efforts to destabilize the situation in ukraine, the costs to russia will escalate. Reporter but the president wont promise tighter sanctions before the vote and the critics believe thats a mistake. If we wait until the elections, it will be too late at that point. Reporter mourners attended a funeral on a fire blamed on pro Russian Supporters. This is a horrible tragedy. It was the First Time Since world war ii that such a battle took place here. Reporter the spread of the violence to southern ukraine raised more alarm bells and republican senator Lindsey Graham called for a tougher western response. I would sanction the Energy Economy of russia, the Banking System of russia and try to drive the russian economy into the ground and i would help arm the ukrainian people. No american troops on the ground so they could defend themselves. Reporter but ukrainians alegion answers are unpredictable. And while european leaders are voicing unity over the sanctions, german chancellor merckle meeting with president obama last week, europe is so dependent on energy supplies, that people question how tough the sanctions could be. Tomorrow the Senate ForeignRelations Committee will hold a hearing on ukraine. It will be friendlier to the president than a house hearing would be, but still likely theres going to be a call for tougher sanctions against russia. In todays Supreme Court 54 decision, upholding the decision of the meeting being able to be led by prayer, since this nation was found scpd until the present day, Many Americans deemed that their own existence must be understood by the presepts far beyond the authority of government to alter or define and that willing participation in Civic Affairs can be consistent with a brief acknowledgment of their belief in a here power, always with due respect for those with other beliefs. Its an Education Initiative designed creators and supporters say to level the play field, creating bench marks to let teachers, students and parents know whats expected of them. Not everyone is on board with common core. Former d. C. Schools chancellor and founders of student first Michelle Reed join us. How do you explain common core . So the common core state standards are a set of internationally benchmarked national standards. Bail basically all they do is tell us what kids know and do at each grade level. It is not a curriculum that is mandated. In fact, each school and state has the ability to determine what they are going to utilize to make sure their kids are going to meet those standards. Heres a letter written to president obama its in the washington post. Tes a former educator. I have a ph. D. In english. Ive been in college and High School Classrooms for over to years and for much of that time ive trained and coached High School English teachers. I was shocked that the 9th grade test included an excerpt from bleak house a novel that is usually taught in college. I got seven out of 36 multiple choice questions wrong on the 11th grade. Old mother west and the sandwich both try to teach important lessons to characters in the stories. Shes concerned that the tests are too tough for these different grade levels. Well, look, you know, the reality is that the u. S. Is falling behind. According to recent results, which are the international results, they show that they are we are now 16th, 21st, 24th, in the entire world in reading, science, and math. That is a huge problem, and the issue is not that theres an Education System is getting worse. Our scores actually remain stagnant. The problem is weve got other countries leap frogging ahead of us. We have the low vak republican thats ahead of us in math. Unless we increase the standards for our kids, were going to continue to fall further behind. The question is should be we troubled kids are having difficulty reaching high standards . The answer is no. We know our kids can do this. Some of it is a little confusing. The excerpt that you read was just one part of the question. Clearly, they expected the kids to actually read a passage first. So if you take anything out of context, it could potentially be confusing. Got it. Brookings, heres their deal. Supporters of common core argue that strong effective implementation of the standards will sweep away such skepticism by producing lasting significant gains in student learning. So far, at least, and it is admittedly the early inings of a long bawl game, there are no signs of such an impressive accomplishment. Tennessee, which is a state that, you know, fore decades and decades, they were at the bottom of almost every educational measure in 2013 just blew the other states out of the water due to their gains, its because they have been implementing a rig ours teacher system. And they have been investigating in a aggressive common core. There seems to be a pushback in different communities. Is your message hey you all need to suck it up . Not suck it up, but my kid is crying, they are frustrated. Our kids and are frustrated about a lot of things, when i tell my kids to turn off their ipods and focus on schoolwork, they get upset at me as well. That doesnt mean that i just say okay i dont want you to get upset so you should be able to do whatever you want to do. We have to be as the adults know what our kids need, and, you know, i think i would i would encourage plxt seekay to read a blog written by a new york city teacher, that outlines why kids need to be held to these high standards and why teachers are actually supporting it. Let me take a twitter question here. She writes i would like to know how you could take successes of Charter Schools to reform Public Schools . Are the districts too large. You are obviously a support of of Charter Schools. Im a supporter of effective Charter Schools and we have some incredibly Charter Schools in our country and also some not so effective. The ones that are doing really well, they implement a lot of practices that can be replicated by Public School districts. They are extending school days, and school years. There are a lot of things that i think charters are doing that we can learn lessons from. Last one, finn writes what is the measure of an effective teacher . A test . Is education more than that . Absolutely. Education is much more than just what can be measured on a test. At the same time, when you look at the quality of the teacher and how effective a teacher is, how much they move student achievement gains academically should be part of that but the bottom liep is we should be looking through multiple lenses at how effective a teacher is. We should be looking at classroom observations and things like students and parents surveys and feedback as well as the test score gains that they are seeing for their kids. Michelle, i really appreciate it. You think educational stepup is an issue politically. I really hope so. In the last president ial election we heard education sort of we saw it fall by the wayside, we really didnt see it pop up as a major issue. I think its just a tremendous red herring and a waste of tarp resources. I hope the speaker will reconsider but it looks like he has bowed again to the farthest right of his conference. If the democrats refuse to take part, and American People are going to feel they have something to hide. To refuse to take part of it, it would be terribly arrogant and not taking the issues seriously. And it shows they are afraid to confront the issues when the public is watching. Trey gowdy was john boehner aes choice to serve as chairman. Our response during the seige itself 0 and you are. All of those kleins of inqir are legitimate and should be apolitical. Lets bring in our panel today. George, what are the chances democrats play ball on this . I think if they are clear thinking, they wont participate. I dont see whats in it for them and it will reduce the committee to being a partisan enterprise. It will give the media excuse not to cover it and they will have an advantage of saying to the rb, public redont another committee. Tray gowdy cannot be called a careerist in this case. He doesnt like his career. He wants to go back to spartanburg and play golf and raise his two children. Hes always says im a prosecutor. Not a politician. It seems to me he does have a legitimate institutional argument which is congressional oversight depends on access to documents and documents are being hidden here. That said, i would remind my republican friends of one thing, 1998, every disaster in politics is at some point or other a disaster of disproportion and the republicans in 1998 got the bit in their teeth, ran on impeachment of bill clinton and he managed to gain seats in off year election in his second term. Really hard to do. Juan. The problem is as george has suggest, it has not displayed a sort of partisan in the middle of all this. The problem here is there has been an unlimited number of investigations. Theres been a Senate IntelligenceCommittee Report that i believe came out just earlier this year. There have been House Committee investigations. Theres been an independent investigation, admiral mullen and ambassador pickering. The email just came out last week after a subpoena from congress a year ago. Theres been a lot of investigations but theres also some new developments. I cant think of one real pertinent fact thats been revealed in these new documents. Hillary clinton testified if you recall before the committee. So everybody has had a shot at her. Besides admiral mullen and ambassador pickering. They said they didnt see the need to interview her. Isnt that a little strange . No. That was their decision. Unless you want to impugn them it did not seem strange to me. They had access to the state department and they made a decision as to how they wanted to conduct their investigation. To come back and say this is Hillary Clinton ais fault, that leads to derailing a political issue. Shes in the lead of anyone in the republican side. I think its an attempt to derail this. I think that the president predica predicated on the idea that there will be no new information to come out of this. New information, unknown, unknown, to change all of these things and at the very least, getting some simple questions answersed you are absolutely right, there have been an unlimited number of investigations. Theres been a very limited number of answers from the white house. My colleague at the American Enterprise institute has a couple in the washington post, look if you think this select committee is not worth doing, very simple way to do, release the president s daily brief that he gets from the cia and the intelligence community. It will say whether or not they vawled the video as a high priority, low priority, all that kind of stuff. It will be mitigate the need to talk about the idea where the video came from. Release the president s schedule while you are at it. If they have got nothing to hide and this is all just sort of spinning wheels, why havent they released that information to get the republicans to call off the dogs. I think the most interesting information thats apt to come out about this is what the military could or could not have been have done for the night. Which would be educational for the American People to understand. The reach of our military is not instantaneous. The press is not interested in this as it was in iran contra and as it was in watergate so thats going to change the entire context of this investigation. Next up, common core. The Performance Review. That corporate trial by fire when every slacker gets his due. And yet, theres someone around the office who hasnt had a Performance Review in a while. Its becoming an issue in a number of different states. 45 of them have signed up for this effort. Initiative developed to improve education standards in math and english. But there is a lot of push back across the country. Were back with the panel. Jonah . Interview with Michelle Reid a National Hero for what she did in washington, d. C. One of the reasons she had such trouble in washington, d. C. Is that her political instincts werent as good as her commitment to excellence to education. Thats a problem with common core. Not National CurriculaJust National standards. Its sort of a thing de facto curriculum but not a day jua. That could be question for a 3rd grader. Its a substitute for curriculum. Get all the political heat of a curriculum. Going to annoy and anger a lot of parents like a curriculum. All the parent say its not a curriculum. Same thing with it not being run from washington. From all intents and purposes it is run from washington. It isnt pushed from the top down especially sips the Obama Administration tied things to the race to the top funds. That is creating on the conservative grass roots side i havent seen anything like this in years. There is a real passion against it. Gallup had a poll out impression of common core standards among Public School parents, juan, who have heard of common core. Stample small. 3. Somewhat positive, somewhat negative 23 . You just hear it more and more from people in various School Districts who have a problem as jonah mentioned. People anxious about the whole notion of testing anyway. In addition to that, then you get this highly politicized environment in which i think people see it as government overreach. This is Big Government now coming into the schoolhouse and impacting my child. And, again, i think its important to state for the record that this was something that the governors initially did. And most republican governors were on board at that time. In combination with the council of chief school officers. This wasnt a federal government initiative. The second thing to say is the obama folks dont have anything to do with it they are supporters as jonah said in terms of race to the top. The importance of standards, as somebody who is a big supporter of Charter Schools and vouchers. I think the importance here is you simply dont write a blank check everything is fine and dandy. When president reagan was in office. He talked about a nation at risk. Because we want our kids to do better. And i dont think its out of place for our governors, for our School Leaders, local School Leaders to say here are the common standards in which we want them to achieve. The military is on board. Chamber of commerce is on board. You know, even the Condoleezza Rice and the council of Foreign Affairs on board. They are all wrong and here is why. The advocates of the common core say if you like local control of your schools you can keep it, period. If you like your local curriculum you can keep it, period. If people dont believe them for very good reasons. This is thin end of an enormous wedge of federal power that will be wielded for the constant progressive purpose of concentrating power in washington so that it can impose Continental Solutions to problems nationwide. You say its voluntary. It has been driven by the use of bribes and coercion in the form of waivers from no child left behind or race to the top money to buy the compliance of these 45 states, two of which, indiana and i believe oklahoma have already backed out and they will not be the last watch line in this argument. They are going to align the sat and act tests with the curriculum. They are going to align textbooks with the tests. Sooner or later you inevidence continuably have National Critic thrawm disregards the craftd of federalism. What are the chances, juan, that we have five or six creative governors experimenting with different curricula or one creative constant permanent washington bureaucracy overlooking our education. We have had 50 years now of the elementary and secondary education act. 50 years of federal involvement that has coincided with stagnation, in test scores across the country. To the contrary, its not the federal involvement thats caused the stagnation, george. That is a result of local governments and particularly local state governments that have proved ineffective in raising standards for children. And i think there is a lot of thought here about oh the problem in americans education is in the big cities. Its with those minority kids who has been hurt the worst by lack of standards by refusing to say to teachers these children can learn . As what president bush called the bigotry of low expectations . This now impacts children across the board. And your fear will federal intervention so far unproven. We will have many more panels about this. Down the road quickly though issue this time around 2016 . Oh, i think thats one of the problems with it politicizes everything . Sure, especially in republican primaries. Its very unlikely that a supporter of the common core will be the republican nominee in 2016. Jeb bush is one of them. Correct. Thats it for the panel. See what the panel one was doing we talked about axiron the onlynderarm low t treaent that can restore t vels to normal in about two weeks in most men.
