They got an Evacuation Order exactly due east of free point there. They figured it was the best place to be. Right now people are thinking, is marsh harbor. And then the next idea, great hoping that the brunt of this abaco. Storm will miss this area based thats where it came ashore. Thats the place we havent seen on the latest past projections, images. Thats the place where people havent been able to get in in shepard. Dana i hear you talked to large number to find out if the National Guard there. Hurricane dorian gaining forward speed as forecasters say it will move what they call dangerously close to floridas east coast. More now on the storm track. Lets get to ken graham from the National Hurricane center in south florida what are you seeing now . Its starting to get close to the coast. At least we have movement. Were finally moving. 5 miles an hour. Thats better than being stationary. With time along the coast, it will be florida, talk about georgia and the carolinas and close to virginia the rest of the week. Shepard so from everybody in the Jupiter Inlet or the whole coast . The whole close. The winds have spread out. Were talking Tropical Storm force winds of 175 miles from the center. As we get close to the coast and several different spots, you can get Hurricane Force winds. Thats where we have the hurricane warnings. Shepard on the future, ken, when this reaches the gulfstream, is the thinking that the intensity will remain fairly stable or there might be a change . I think its going to remain stable. As we go forward, you start to increase the speed. That acts to keep it about the same. Independent of a category, the size itself causes the storm surge and the size itself can cause the winds to expand. So the impact is independent of the intensity in the center. Shepard ken graham at the National Hurricane center. Thanks so much. Jacqui heinrich now reporting live in port st. Lucie. Jacqui . Shep, the storm is about 110 miles east of here. You can see the outer bands as they push through. Theyre really kicking up the surf behind me. Were on a cause way, connecting the mainland to a barrier island, hutchison island. Theres white caps that are just rolling in this way. Its actually brought quite a bit of debris up here on to the bridge. You can see theres branches up here on the in the parking lot. The sea spray is just lapping over the roadway here. Up until about two hours ago, this was shut down except to police and emergency vehicles because of the risk of high flooding. This area is at risk for flooding not just because of the storm surge but because this area is affected by king tide. Its at higher than normal high tide that is a name phenomenon that happens this time of year. Even without this storm being here, this was scheduled to be the highest tide of the year anyway. Combine the king tide with the storm surge, the outer bands of the storm and you have the potential for some damage. Luckily this area really has not been hit too hard by the rainfall. It was spared from the heavy rains that you saw ravaging the bahamas. So the concern for inland flooding that they had on the mainland, that really didnt produce many results. The concern is this storm surge would push the indian river inland and the heavily saturated neighborhood would flood from that rain. This area was spared any damage from that. As of right now, theyre monitoring, making sure that the surf you have boats out there. They must trust those morings. We have seen beach stairs ripped off and debris kicked up by the surf. Shepard thanks, jacqui in port st. Lucie, florida. Its half passed the hour. Coming up, our coverage of Hurricane Dorian continues. Live reports from the storms next target. We have live reports from cocoa beach and up at tybee island in georgia. First, jeff paul live in cocoa beach. Jeff . Yeah, shep. This hurricane is as close as its ever been to cocoa beach. Weve seen the outer bands. Very windy. You can tell. Over here, you can see what its doing to the surf off the coast near the pier. The waves are big. Strong as what weve seen in recent days. They dont know what it will do in terms of storm surge. That is the big concern. The storm surge could be anywhere from 3 to 5 feet in some spots along the central coast. It could be up to seven feet. Just a quick drive around town, you can see that is going on in the inland as well, a lot of people have their homes boarded up, their businesses boarded up. You can see a couple surfers out there and a pack of kite surfers with the down grade of the hurricane and prediction that youll see winds around 30 miles an hour possible gusts up to 60, we have seen some boarding up in savann savannah, tybee. Weve seen sandbagging. Not extensive. People said theyre going to ride it out or wait awhile and make a decision. You heard mention of the high tides in the spring time called the king tide. I want to show you where the waves were ending an hour ago. This is how high the tide was coming. You continue have a lot of beach left. Theres not a lot of space between the top of the road and the top of the water with the prediction here that youll get a storm surge between 4 and 7 feet, theres a darn good chance that the people that wl storm s theyr toby on tybee island at the mouth of the savannah river. Our next guest said she was with her 7monthold baby and her boyfriend trying to leave their apartment on grand bahama when their jeep got stuck in rising flood waters. She said her landlord rescued them from the middle of the road since emergency lines were all busy. Bianca strong joins us now. How are you and your family now . Hi, shepard. Under the circumstances, i guess were doing pretty good. Ive never seen a hurricane like this. Shepard tell me what it was like. Well, its been stuck on us for two days now. So what got us, we were not prepared for it is the flooding. The areas in the grand bahama that never flood are flooded. People are all over the place. Ive never seen anything like this. Shepard are your in your home now and what are you see something. Yes, we just got back to the apartment. Still a lot of water. We drove through certain parts. We had to take a detour to get to where we live. Were only about five minutes away from home. But we had to go all the way around because there was so much water and flooding going on. Some parts that you could not get to. Cars stalled out because they were trying to get through certain roads and they got stuck. Shepard how is your baby . Hes doing great. Hes sleeping at the moment. Still not affected by it all. They dont know whats going on. Theyre so innocent and small. They dont understand hurricanes and things like that. Yeah. Shepard 7monthold. So glad that you have been safe the last couple days. All the best to you and your family. I know the road ahead is a long one. I wish you the best. Yes. I want to say theres no way we can prepare for anything like this. The flooding was unprecedented. I want to thank everybody sending prayers and thoughts. Also, we kept connected through the storm and we kept up with family and friends. Shepard bianca strong, good luck. I know the cleanup and all the rest will take a very long time. Thank you so much. We have a long way ahead. Shepard the best to you and your neighbors in the hours ahead. Lets now go to the acting Homeland Security secretary, kev kevin mceline. Thanks for the opportunity. Good afternoon, shepard. Glad to join you. Shepard when you look across florida, georgia, the carolinas, what do you see and what is your message for people in those areas . Absolutely. Watch your viewers. Theyre worried about being affected by the storm. Hurricane dorian is moving 2 miles an hour northwest. We just went through a full brief at the National ResponseCoordination Center in fema with all the state Emergency Managers. Everybody is wellprepared for the storm. Theyve been working on evacuations for several days now. 27 counties, six Million People affected, a ton of assets and supplies and resources, shelters all standing by for any impacts from the storm along the coastline that you showed. Shepard mr. Secretary, when is the last time you spoke with the president on this matter and how would you characterize that conversation . The president came here to fema and hosted half the cabinet and did a full briefing on the status on the status, on the preparations and the inner Agency Support to the states. We had the Emergency Managers and governors on from florida, georgia, south to North Carolina. I think making sure were all in the same page and ready to go ill be briefing them tomorrow on the storm and the impacts with fema leadership team. Lock at his tweeter feed. Hes pushing out the information that fema is sending out, the National Hurricane center is publishing on the forecast. Making sure that all of his followers are up to speed on whats happening with the storm. We want people to pay attention. Shepard secretary, one thing that people should know what would you like to tell them . Id like to tell them not get complacent. Because the current track shows it off the coast of florida, that does not mean we wont see Tropical Storm force winds or hurricane winds lashing the coast. As it heads up to georgia and South Carolina, we could still face a landfall. Any movement off of that track to the west could be a different situation. Its a powerful storm. 110 miles an hour sustained winds. The windfield has expanded. Well see a broader impact as the s toes and be weary of this storm. Shepard well keep following it. Secretary mcaleenan, your department of Homeland Security over immigration. Its been in the news a lot lately. How would you are you in lock stem agreement with the president on immigration policy . Were addressing the Immigration Crisis and tighten our immigration enforcement. Theres a number of key regulations that will help us do that and making big problems working on the border and working with mexico and Central American partners which is a regional partnership. Shepard the question was, are you in lock step with the president on immigration . I ask, as you know, because of the rollout of the replacement for the flores agreement which now says the United States is hold children for more than 20 days with their parents in federal custody. When that rollout happened, you didnt do it at the white house but somewhere else. Inside the white house, there was a lot of push back on the way you handled things. Is that because you disagree with the president on this policy . Absolutely not. Weve worked on the flores regulation a year. I had over 100,000 comments and we wanted to get that out as quickly as possible. If youre forced to release people not before they go through an immigration proceeding, you cant create any integrity in the process. So we needed flores out. I announced it at a dhs facility and its appropriate. Shepard are you concerned that the United States is Holding Children for extended periods of time . Many cases children that havent done anything wrong except come with their parents as instructed. So first of all, unaccompanied children arriving, now we have the emergency funding from congress that we asked for on may 1, we got it two months later, weve been able to with our health and Human Services partners move children out in less than 24 hours. Children are not waiting at border stations any longer. For family units, right now theyre actually going into the migrant protection protocols. If they dont have a claim of asylum being repatriated. The remainder are being released waiting for a proceeding. We would like to maintain custody at a Family Residential center like the obama administration. That takes 40 to 50 days on average. Thats how you have integrity. Theyre campuslike settings and have dining, medical facilities and courts on site. So theyre an appropriate place to manage the immigration process. Shepard youre the acting secretary of Homeland Security. Would you like the permanent job . Im honored to be serving in this role. Were solving problems and making a lot of progress. As you can see with the people behind me, great americans that are here to get ready for a storm like this and protect the American People and address any response in these states. Its an honor. No secretary mcaleenan, thanks to the people there doing such great work for our folks. Thank you. Ill let them know. Shepard secretary Homeland Security, kevin mcaleenan. We made it 12 miles further to the northwest and the treasure kay area of great abaco island. Still waiting to get to little abaco and grand bahama island. Shepard abaco island is where the storm came ashore in marsh harbor. I wonder what your eyes on the ground or in the boats are telling you. We dont have boats there yet. We have seven helicopters with customs and border protection. Theyre flying over, assessing where we can potentially bring in boats and land aircraft. Theyre looking for folks in distress that they can get to and once theyre at the end shepard i think he is accidentally pressing a button. Go ahead, admiral. Are you still with us . Apparently we lost admiral eric jones. I will tell you that the we keep talking about abaco island. The scenes there are i hate to use the phrase, looks like a bombs went off. I cant think of a better way to describe it. I remember the days after hurricane andrew landed in south florida. You may remember, you know, so long ago. We hadnt seen that kind of destruction since hurricane neil in the 60s. Looked like piles of lumber instead of homestead and the rest. And though certainly the buildings are different on abaco and the topography is different, its jarring and very disturbing to see. Leaving people wondering what theyre going to find there. A storm surge of 23 feet on an island that really doesnt have a lot of peaks and valleys. Largely flat. Now worries not just about cleanup and rebuilding and that sort of thing but about the people that stayed behind there. The United Nations says some 60,000 people in the bahamas. Again, this is from the United Nations. Theyll need clean water and shelter in the days and weeks and months ahelp. You hope that people on great abaco found some shelter or got off the island. Because its a scene like few weve seen. Wrapping up the hour, neil cavuto will pick up coverage in just a moment. Continuing coverage from dorian as it continues to move.
