Family. For months, still breaking the rule pwes hind bars. Well talk to a wall street journal reporter who expoedz the secret life of martin scully. Secret is finally out and just triggered a new federal investigation. Im ed henry in for shep smith. The knew starts now. We begin with breaking news. President , you can see him there, touring storm damage with the first lady as big changes take place back at the white house. President S Communications chief, former fox news executive bill shine is out. Shine resigning and taking a senior post at the trump Reelection Campaign. It comes as the president gets a firsthand look at the devastation in alabama after a tornado outbreak killed 23 people including several kids. President also flew over the tornados path of destruction. You see that right there. The first lady, melania trump, posting a photo from a Disaster Relief center they visited. A live look at ft. Bening, georgia, where the president is about to take off. Hes landing there. Gonna head to florida for the weekend. Jonathan serrie is reporting live in lee county, alabama, where this tragedy happened. What have you been seeing today . Reporter hi, ed. Well, plenty of destruction wherever you look. And President Trump got to see it for himself up close and personal after taking an aerial tour of the damage aboard marine one, he and the first lady toured one of the neighborhoods on foot, one of the hardest hit areas. There they met with some of the families who lost loved ones in sundays tornado. Those families include the family of sheila crisp and Marshall Lynn grimes a couple who died in the storm. Mr. Grimes 10yearold daughter remains hospitalized, apparently not well enough to go to the funeral of the couple. The daughters friend, 10yearold taylor thornton, who was over for a visit, died in the storm. Family and friends held a Funeral Service for taylor this morning. Again, President Trump was wrapped up in the visit and has just arrived at air force one after touring the devastation here, at times hugging some of the tornado survivor, trying to offer his comfort and also promising the full assistance of the federal government in the recovery effort which is going to last for quite sometime, ed. Ed all right. Jonathan serrie, we appreciate that report. Lets go to john roberts our chief white house correspondent. I mentioned at the top, getting the president on the road, obviously serving his function as president and comforter in chief, if you will. Also some big changes at the white house. Reporter yeah, ed. This morning as the president was speaking to the press before boarding the helicopter for alabama just outside of the sight of the cameras, was bill shine the former president of fox news. There you see him on the lefthand side of your screen. Hes been serving as the White House Communications director since june of last year, shortly after the president left aboard air force one bound for alabama, the white house released a statement saying bill shine was resigning as communication director and he was going to join the 2020 election, Reelection Campaign as a senior adviser. Now, there was no reason given for shines departure. I do know after working with him just about every day here at the white house and having interaction with him that he missed his family. They didnt move here to the washington, d. C. Area. You have a certain tempo to keep up at the trump white house, you dont often get a chance to get home and see your family, so that im told is one of the biggest factors in shines departure. He released a statement this morning saying, serving President Trump and this country has been the most rewarding experience of my entire life. To be a small part of all of what the president has done for the American People has been an honor. Im looking forward to working on President Trumps Reelection Campaign and spending more time with my family. The president said bill shine has done an outstanding job working for me and the administration. We will miss him at the white house and look forward to working with him on the 2020 campaign where he will be heavily involved. Thank you to bill an his wonderful family. No word yet on who might replace him aS Communications director here at the white house. He is the fifth Communications Director since the 20th of january, 2017. We dont even know if he will be replaced. President trump likes to be his own Communications Director. Ed, stay tuned. Well see. Ed good point. Also, the president talked to reporters. Took that photo before leaving for alabama. He said he felt very badly for his former campaign chair. Federal judge yesterday sentenced Paul Manafort to nearly four years behind bars for tax and bank fraud. The president also said his former lawyer, potential attorney, Michael Cohen, asked him directly for a pardon but he said no. It was another high profile departure from the president s senior staff with bill shine, typical day i guess for john roberts trying to cover all these stories. Jump in there on Michael Cohen and other. Reporter lets start with Paul Manafort. The president did go to bat for manafort. He believes manafort was severely mistreated, being held in solitary confinement, dragged out on occasion to testify in front of the special counsel investigators. But the president did take some comfort from last nights sentencing which, as you pointed out, was well below sentencing guide lines. Got 47 months. Hell spend a little more than two years in jail. The judge t. S. Elliott said to the court that, quote, we are not here before this court, manafort is not before this court for anything having to do with collusion with the russian government to influence this election. It was simply a statement of fact, because manafort was there to be sentenced for charges of tax evasion, not for suspicion of collusion with russia. After the sentencing hearing, manaforts attorney asserted that, quote there was no evidence Paul Manafort worked in collusion with any Government Official from russia. This morning on his way out the door, the president took both of those statements together to say there is no evidence that he or his campaign colluded with the russians to influence the 2016 election. Listen here. His lawyer, a highly respected man and very highly respected judge. The judge said there was no collusion with russia. This had nothing to do with collusion. There was no collusion. Its a collusion hoax. Its a collusion witch hoax. I dont collude with russia. Reporter the president got into a twitter war with his former attorney, Michael Cohen. President first tweeting bad lawyer and fraudster said in a sworn testimony that he never asked for a pardon. His lawyers totally contradicted him. He lied. Additionally, and this is new, he directly asked me for a pardon. I said no. He lied again. He also badly wanted to work at the white house. He lied. Cohen responded, quote, just another set of lies by President Trump. Mr. President , let me remind you that today is International Womens day. You may want to use the day to apologize for your own lies and dirty deeds to women like Karen Mcdougal and stephanie clifford. Some divorces are just more difficult than others. Ed lets bring in chris wallace. Where to start . Let me just say, you dont want to get into a fight with your fixer who knows all of your dirty laundry. It ends up getting ugly. Ed why is the president out there tweeting . Hell have to have the facts on his side about who asked for a pardon. Fits shown otherwise, that tweet will be a problem. Seems to me this whole question of a pardon is a double edged sword. On the first hand, in terms of how it conceivably cuts Michael Cohen, he said, under oath, before the House Oversight committee that he never asked for nor would accept a pardon. Forget what the president said. Cohens own lawyer now, lanny davis, says in fact at one point he directed his lawyer to discuss with the president s lawyer the possibility of a pardon. That would seem to contradict what cohen said under oath before the House Oversight committee. On the other hand, with the president now saying, and john is right, this is the first time we had heard this, at some point cohen asked the president directly for a pardon. President said he said no. But this whole question of what was discussed about a potential pardon could be an issue that could go back the bite the u. S. And President Trump. Ed no doubt about it. You see the president live there with the first lady at ft. Bening. Theyre at a military base and will be heading down to florida after touring that alabama tornado damage. Chris, lets stay on Michael Cohen for a second, because his credibility in question. Hes hrr plead guilty to lying to congress among other things. About to go to prison. Now it appears perhaps he lied again before congress. Thats going to have to be looked at, no doubt. Then if you go over to Paul Manafort, he gets a much lighter sentence than everyone expected. The federal judge there said, again, this has nothing to do with russian collusion. Yeah. I think we need to make an important distinction. He is saying the particular case that he heard had nothing to do with russian collusion. It didnt. It was all about private business dealings between Paul Manafort and various business associates. Some of them american, some of them foreign. Some ukrainian. Before he ever worked for the trump campaign. Thats why he was convicted of bank fraud and tax fraud. It had nothing to do, no one ever said it had anything to do with russian collusion. That does not seem the judge was giving he, the president , a clean bill of health on russian collusion. He was just saying the manafort case has nothing to do with that. Ed right. Paul manafort is going to face another judge next week facing a couple counts of conspiracy against the federal government and could face a lot more jail time. Thats right. He is going to face a sentence next week. Obviously, question, one, how much time will he get from judge jackson . The other is, will it be served concurrently with the 47 month sentence in alexandria, virginia, or consecutively, meaning it would be time added on . Yes, this is a very light sentence, relatively speaking, 47 months as compared to 19 to 24 that the federal prosecutors were seeking. On the other hand, as judge ellis pointed out, you cant tell anybody thats going to spend two to three years in prison that its light. Ed lets take one step back and think about whats been happening this week. Everyones still waiting for the Mueller Report, which was supposed to be the bible about all of this. Is the president going to get a clean bill of health or is it going to build the case for impeachment . Seems like House Democrats, now that they have some power, are going to move on. You have jerry nadler going after 81 associates of the president. Regardless of what mueller has. I wouldnt say they are ignoring whats happening, but they clearly arent waiting for the Mueller Report. Theyre saying House Democrats with the majority, theyre going to take a look at these issues. Whatever you think of Michael Cohen, he laid out kind of a road map of things to investigate. Not just about the president s dealing, hush money payments. He didnt have much on collusion or obstruction. But all kinds of business dealings that donald trump as a private citizen had, alleged, i want to emphasize alleged, tax fraud, insurance fraud, all kinds of things like that. No matter what the Mueller Report says, this president is going to be investigated by House Democrats right up through the 2020 election. As we await air force one take off there, what about bill shine . Put this in some context for us. We want to be honest an transparent he was a long time executive here at fox news. Hes been at the white house for a relatively brief time. There have been some reports that maybe the president was frustrated with hiS Communications director. Others saying this is more about his family. What do you think about this . I dont know the reasons that hes leaving. It was a surprise to me as it was to most people. I will say that may be Communications Director to donald trump, the most thankless job in america, not just in washington, as john pointed out. I think he is the sixth Communications Director in just over two years. One of the things that supposedly President Trump said to bill shine, or expected from bill shine when he came in, i hope youre going to improve my press coverage. I dont think any Communications Director will have much impact on how the media covers President Trump. Ed that is a Tall Mountain to climb. Chris wallace, look forward to seeing you on sunday. This sunday, chris will be talking with larry kudlow, California Congress woman katie hill. Thats this sunday on your local fox tv station. Check your local listings. A contraband cell phone. Ed the house ended up easily passing a resolution condemning hate after days of debate over what should and should not be in the tech of that resolution. Democratic leadership set to broaden it to condemn more forms of hate beyond antisemitism, which is where it all began, to get enough support the pass the resolution. Some democrats questioned why colleagues could not singularly condemn antisemitism. Thats where we find mike emanuel. Mike, whats the layest . Reporter well, ed, good afternoon. That antihate resolution created an awkward spot for republicans with a bit of a split. You had Kevin Mccarthy voting for it but the newest member of the Republican LeadershipTeam Liz Cheney voted against it. She explained the no vote on fox. So this resolution ended up really being an effort to protect her and was completely watered down. As i said, it didnt mention her by name. It really sort of piles on a whole bunch of other things that, frankly, allowed them, allowed her to claim this resolution was a victory. Reporter democrats struggled with this issue much of the week. Some wanting to be it more forceful. Others wanting it broadened. The majority leader fired back at some of the criticism. I could not have articulated any more forcefully that any semitism is unacceptable, that antisemitism led to grievance result, unacceptable results. Reporter looking at the week ahead, on the senate side, we expect there will be a vote rejecting President Trumps call for a National Emergency to go around congress and build his border wall. We all expect a likely vote on the green new deal, which critics say is too expensive and unrealistic. Mitch mcconnell wants to put democrats on the record on that issue. Today in the house, they had a vote on hr1, a massive package designed to look at campaign finance, Voting Rights and ethics. Yes, it is a power grab. A power grab on behalf of the people. But let us look to the senate and say, when we pass this bill, its not just what happened on this floor. Its the message it sends to the American People. Our inside maneuvering will have succeeded today but an of the outside mobilization of the American People for the people. Ed the mayor of a city in maine is resigning and blaming the media after his alleged mistress released their text messag messages. In those messages the republican mayor joked ab slavery. During his resignation, the mayor said the media does not, quote, acknowledge personal space and reports it as nothing more than rumor. The man accused of kidnapping a 13yearold girl in wisconsin and killing her parents regrets what he did. Hes willing to own up to his crimes. Police say Jake Patterson kept jayme closs in a remote cabin before she escaped. Now a local News Reporter in minneapolis said the suspect told him he plans to plead guilty. As for the murders and kidnapping he said, i cant believe i did this. Matt, good to see you. Reporter in that letter from jail, Jake Patterson wrote that he does not have the mind of a serial killer. Instead, he said murdering skwraeups and denise closs was impulse and what led them to kidnap their daughter jayme is not black and white in his eye. In a letter to a tv reporter, patterson said he has huge amounts of remorse and had no real Long Term Plan for what he was going to do with closs. He all addressed what he told police writing, quote, i knew when i was caught, which i thought would happen sooner, i wouldnt fight anything. I tried to give them everything, which wasnt completely honest, so they didnt have to interview jayme. They did anyway and hurt her more for no reason. He writes plead guilty. I want jayme an her relatives to know that. I dont want them to worry about a trial. In a case like this, the judge moved to it 27th of march. Patterson writes about keeping up on the news of the girl he was holding captive writing, i followed it through my phone. If something popped up on tv about it, i would change the channel. I would tell jayme, im sorry, i cant watch this. More on what caused him to allegedly kill the closs parents and abduct jayme, he said at the time i was really pissed, i didnt want to. The reason i did this is complicated. No one can imagine how sorry i am for hurting jayme. Im sorry for everything. Patterson also writes he did not confide in anyone about his crimes. He claims his father came to the house on days. Thats when he forced jayme to hide in his bedroom. Fox news reached out several times to pattersons public defender but he has not responded to our request. Jayme an her family have not released details to confirm deny what patterson claims happened, is that right . Reporter yes. This family is immensely happy to have jayme back. They have released a picture of her back home but have not released details about what she may have told them. They have not really pressed her for exact details about what may have happened to her in this house. Ed matt simms, live for us today. Mixed numbers from the new jobs report. Manning said she already said everything she knows and opposes the secrecy of the grand jury process. She gave the website classified records and u. S. Secrets and has been serving 35 years in prison before the president , president obama back then, commuted her sentence. Wiki leaks is at the center of the russia probe. The cia called the website a vote unquote hostile intelligence service. Jillian turner is reporting live in washington. Good to see you. Reporter good to see you, ed. Chelsea manning convicted of illegally leaking hundreds of thousand of classified military documents to wiki leaks back in 2010, was taken into federal custody. Federal judge found manning in contempt of court for refusing to answer questions when she appeared before a secret grand jury. The judge ordered manning to be held in jail until she agrees to testify or until the grand jury wraps up its business which, according to mannings attorney r could take up to a year and a half. As everybody knows, chelsea has tremendous courage. Our primary concern at this point is her health while she is confined. We will be paying close attention. I think its quite likely this is an appealable order. Reporter yesterday while still free, manning herself appealed directly to the American People. I have a history of having to deal with secrecy in a lot of these secret proceedings. They tend to favor the government. They tend to allow nefarious things to happen. I am in general opposition of this kind of proceedings taking place. Reporter she explained she refused to answer the secret grand jury questions because doing so violated her first, fourth and sixth amendment rights. I have already given an enormous amount of testimony in this case. I see no reason why we should go over the same thing again. Reporter wikileaks took to twitter this morning after mannings arrest writing, Chelsea Manning jailed for refusing to testify on wikileaks and asange. Lawyers are being forced to testify against journalists and sent to jail when they dont comply. Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison in 2013, though president obama ultimately commuted her sentence just before he left office. Julian asange, founder of wikileaks has been in hiding in london since 2012. He has never been charged with a crime here in the united states. Ed . Ed thank you for that report. The man known for raising the price of a life saving drug by 5,000 is reportedly breaking the rules while he serves a seven year prison term for securities fraud. Now theres more that the feds are investigating after the wall street journal reports martin scrella also known as pharma bro continues to run his business, yes, using a contraband cell phone. He even fired somebody, allegedly, from behind bars. According to the journal, he all found a way to post on twitter after the site banned him. Even made some new prison friends like crispy in e block. Then the last couple hours theres some breaking news the journal reports the prison has opened an investigation. He helped break this story. Rob, how in the world did you get to the bottom of this . A journalist never tells. Reporter did you have conversations with pharma bro . Hes not quoted in the story, but prison had a prior investigation in which more than 1,000 contraband cell phones were found. So hes hardly the only person in the prison with a cell phone. Ed hes been in the top bunk in a 12 person prison cell ft. Dix new jersey. How do you get tipped off to what was happening if you cant talk about him specifically. How did this even become a story . Well, i have covered martin for a number of years. A front page story when he was out. He is one of the most interesting constantly scheming executive, if you could call the company that. We got a tip. Ed so we can remine our viewer, we talked ab the life saving drug. He took the price of a drug that help aids patients from 13. 50 to 750 per pill. The idea this is someone whos cunning, you can understand why hes behind bars. Correct. What youre not even saying is hes behind bars not even for that. Hes behind bars for ripping off investors in his prior hedge fund. He plead not guilty, but he was convicted. Ed lets talk a little bit about how one would assume, wrongly, i guess, that you cant get a cell phone into a prison like this. What do we know about how he was conducting business and still running a Pharmaceutical Company from behind bars . Talk to us about that. It s a relatively small company. Threeperson board. The ceo is a former employee of his. The Board Members are a 27yearold who we interviewed for the story. He met martin on twitter. These are essentially friends of his and they are running what is a multimillion dollar company. He was tweeting, i guess his previous account was shut down, so he was tweeting with a new account that didnt list his name so he could fly under the radar. He was tweeting at jack, one of the founders of twitter and tweeting also at alexandria ocasiocortez . Absolutely. Tweeting his thoughts on pharmaceutical research. Once you knew it was martin, which we did, it could not have been more obvious that it was him. Nothing has change. Ed what do you know about what the bureau of prisons is doing now. This is not just about an investigation to get to the bottom of it, but they are covering their back side. Absolutely. This is considered a very serious offense to have a cell phone on paper. Lot of prisoners have it. If they find he has one, he could be in solitary confinement for up until the remainor of his term, 2023. If they want to bring new charges against him, he could be in a lot longer. Ed i all noticed he tweeted at roger stone, something to the effect of Never Never Never snitch. I think that was on his blog. He just constantly is tweeting celebrities, if youd call roger stone that. Ed a remarkable story. We appreciate you bringing it to us. Thank you. Ed live look at the dow. Stocks were off from the get go after a jobs report that did not live up to predictions. According to the Labor Department, employers added just 20,000 jobs last month. That number topped 300,000 youll remember in january. It is the smallest monthly gain in about a year and a half. But on the positive side, the Unemployment Rate dropped to 3. 8 . Close to a five decade low. Fox by network Deidre Bolton is here. Normally that number would be cause for sharing but even the Labor Department said a big part of that coming down is because of furloughed workers returning to work after that 35 day shutdown. We cant even cheer about that which is why we are seeing the dow in the state that it is in. Lot of investors are anxious. I would be remiss if i didnt point out there were two bright spots. One is wage growth. Weve seen wage growth, the best in ten years. For most people, if they have a job, they are at least getting paid fairly in not a little bit more. Thats great. We havent seen that in a decade. Ed we heard people saying we have to get wages up. Yes. People who have the skill set that are important to employers actually have a lot more power. Employers are having to just pay them more to retain them and to attract them. Thats good. Also if you are a lawyer, an accountant, a consultant, you are in very good stead. This category by far blew away all the categories. Of that 20,000 that was majority. Ed people trying to figure out the new tax law. There was something to be said for that. Accountants. Of course. The revisions from the last few months didnt really indicate strengthening. Doesnt mean it cant change. But we got data that were not particularly encouraging, then youre up as well.
