By one estimate, 90 of this city is gone, 29 dead, more than 50,000 people evacuated. The numbers here are just mindboggling. Right now, the biggest challenge is identifying the remains, because some of the bodies are burned beyond recognition. Relatives of the missing may be asked to provide a dna sample to help identify the dead. The search continues five days later to track down more than 200 people listed as missing. Its possible they made it to Evacuation Centers or are staying out of town but just havent been able to communicate with their friends and family here. That is certainly the hope. Meantime, those that fled the flames sometimes by driving through them have no idea when they will be allowed to come back. This area needs to be safely secured and power restored before it can be repopulated and we are a long way from that. Paradise was home to many elderly and disabled people. They will be displaced for a long time. Governor jerry brown has requested the president to declare a major federal disaster, providing relief beyond what comes with the state of emergency. They have it 25 surrounded and are hoping to make big gains today, shepard with a break in the weather before the strong winds kick up again tonight. Claudia cowen reporting from Northern California. Team fox continues in Southern California where two fires are burning in Ventura County about 30 miles north and west of l. A. Jeff paul reporting from malibu. Reporter shep, the winds are really starting to pick up out here. As a result, we are hearing about a new fire thats burning in simi valley. This is along the 118. It is being called the peak fire, a result of the strong gusts that are starting to move through the area, something firefighters definitely didnt want to hear about with resources being so tapped right now between northern and Southern California. As we come back out here live, i want you to look out there. That is malibu canyon. An hour ago, you could see the ridge and make that out. These strong winds are starting to move through and bringing in ash and all sorts of smoke. That, of course, can spark up new fires with those embers on the move. As you take a look out here, you can see what the fire did here and did to more than 300 other structures. Nothing you can really make out. I could tell this was likely a table over here. Its incredible the people that live this area in malibu say they have never seen anything like this. Fires in the canyon all the way out to the beaches. We talked with one woman. Here is what she had to say. Im devastated. I have lived here since 1978. The joke always was, point do you know will never burn. Point dune never has burned. People werent as concerned. Reporter whats incredible about this fire is how indiscriminate it is. This house right here burned to the ground. Right next door, that house is seemingly fine. Theres nothing really wrong with it, at least from what we can tell. Thats the troubling thing for people out here who have been told to evacuate. They preelly dont want to leave. As you take a look at this video right here, this is from a man who stayed back in malibu trying to fight the fire himself with a garden hose. He saved his house and one of his neighbors. He is not alone. Take a listen. Were ready to go at a drop of the hat. We have the cars backed and are ready to go, waiting for the last minute to see how these winds fair. Reporter those gusts could be as strong as 55 miles per hour. There are some Wind Warnings into effect until tomorrow. With these new fires sparking up, it is going to be really hard for firefighters to wrap their arms around this fire and get it extinguished in time or at least contained. Only 20 contained here in Southern California for the woolsey fire. It has burned more than 90,000 acres. Jeff paul reporting from malibu. Now, to simi valley, these are brand new fires. There are two of them. These are both in the simi valley area. This first one we are looking at now, they are calling it the rocky fire. It has forced the immediate evacuation of box canyon and lake manor in l. A. County. Thats south of the 118 freeway in simi valley. When you look at this, it is burning right up to highways, including the 118. We dont have a way to know exactly where this chopper is at the moment. I can tell you the 118 has been affected. The other fire is the lynn fire, which actually broke out about two hours ago near lynn ranch, which is in the Thousand Oaks area and burned about 15 acres according to Ventura County fire officials. The ventura park road off ramp of the 101 freeway is also closed. Fires all over the area and our coverage aerials on the ground. Well continue throughout this news hour. We will take you back to california a little bit later for a look at the largest air tanker in the world and how it is fighting these flames. Floridas statewide recount, the governor and senate races are still technically too close to call. President trump has tweeted that large numbers of new ballots showed up out of nowhere and many ballots are missing and forged. An honest vote is no longer possible. Those appear to be false. Fox news has seen nothing of any kind to indicate that the president s statements are true. Further, a spokeswoman from floridas department of state wrote that, our staff has not seen any evidence of criminal activity in Broward County at this time. Who appointed the secretary of state . Rick scott did, the republican governor and candidate for senate. Like the recount nearly 20 years ago, all eyes are on Broward County in south florida. Here, you can see workers counting ballots phil keatinging is reporting. Reporter hey, shep, both candidates, senator nelson and governor scott, have filed plenty of lawsuits since election day, six by scott, two by nelson. Governor scott on friday won his first two lawsuits. This morning, a judge here in broward denied his latest lawsuit. He clearly doesnt trust, this is scott, the supervisor of elections, brenda snipes here at the Broward County Elections Office. He was hoping a judge would order that all counting machines and voter ballots be impounded, secured when they are not being used. The judge said that was not necessary and denied that. However, he did say, well add three more Sheriff Deputies from Broward County to the scene to make sure it remains extremely tight. Looking live inside the Elections Office here behind me. They continue not recounting but sorting. There are 3. 5 million pages to go through, around 800,000 people filed their ballots in Broward County. Multipage ballots at that. So what the elections people are doing is taking page one, which has the recount races on it, separating those and making a new pile and when they finally get that pile built, they will begin to start taking the page ones and doing the actual recount. It could start happening late tonight if not tomorrow morning. The two Senate Candidates themselves continue their verbal barbs. One fact is that rick scott isnt interested in making sure every lawful vote is counted. Bill nelson is clearly a sore loser. He cant stand the fact that he is not going to be elected for the first time in decades. He is just here to steal this election. The governors race also still tight and still in a recount mode. Republican, ron desantis leads democratic mayor of tallahassee, Andrew Gillum about 3,000 voex. They are calling for democracy. Desan be it is is already setting up transition shop in tallahassee. Phil keatinging reporting live in florida. In Arizona Senate race, Kyrsten Sinema has increased her lead over Martha Mcsally. Kyrsten sinema leads by 30,000 total votes or. 5 of 1 . She initially trailed. Now, her team says it is all but impossible for mcsally to win. Mcsallys campaign is asking supporters for donations in case the vote count heads to court. Alicia acounia reporting live from phoenix. Reporter hi, shep. More than 219,000 votes have yet to be tabulated, most of those from here in Maricopa County. Democratic congresswoman, Kyrsten Sinema leads Martha Mcsally by 32,000 votes. They say with the latest ballot count, kyrstins lead is ins insurmountab insurmountable. The Mcsally Campaign did not respond to phone calls or texts made by fokt news. The last we heard from them was on saturday saying the latest release offers compelling evidence that the remaining uncounted ballots are favorable to martha. The Maricopa County recorder, adrian fontez, says they will continue to tabulate the reports even if things appear to be over at some point. One, the press can call it. That doesnt mean it is over. Two, a candidate can concede. That doesnt mean it is over. Three, we can publish our final numbers after we are done tabulating every ballot and then we will know who the winner is. The arizona gop party has questioned whether a democrat should be in charge of the maricopa count. Some republicans have pushed back. The partisan, heavyhanded, heavyadjective attacks against the county official are the very things voters rejected in in campaign. It is not playing well. As a republican, i dont enjoy watching the party play that card. Reporter we are going to get another big update on those vote counts, shep, at 5 00 local, 7 00 eastern. Alicia acounia reporting from phoenix. A spokesman for the represent, brian kemp, is pushing stacy abrams to concede, calling it long overdue. That statement in response to a federal lawsuit the Abrams Campaign filed yesterday. She is fighting to become the countrys first black woman governor. She says the race is too close, it could go to a runoff. Her team is asking for more time so officials can make sure, as they put it, that they count all the remaining votes. Steve harrigan reporting live from atlanta. Reporter shepherd, the fight is still going on here in georgia. The tone is getting sharp, indeed. Brian kemp, the republicans team, is saying abe brams failure to conceit is a to democracy. To force those counties to accept provisional ballots which were rejected for what they say are arbitrary reasons. As it stand now, kemp has about a 59,000 vote lead. He has got 50. 3 of the vote. If that were to dip below 50 percent, that would mean a runoff vote on december 4th. How many votes are still out there uncounted. The kemp side says 17,000, mathematically impossible for the democrat to win. The abrams side says there could be as many as 30,000 votes out there. By 5 00 p. M. , thats when all the georgia counties are scheduled to certify their votes unless a lawsuit against in the way. Steve harrigan reporting from atlanta. Congress is back in d. C. Top democrats in congress say the acting attorney general, Matthew Whittaker should recuse himself and they will use the new House Majority to prevent him from interfering with that investigation. President trump named whittaker the acting a. G. After he forced Jeff Sessions to resign last week. Democrats argue he is not legally in the job. The fox news senior judicial analyst, Andrew Napolitano agrees. He says he is not legally qualified because of precise laws after the nixon watergate break. He says the president has put the Justice Department in a dangerous spot by appointing whittaker. Here is his argument. Whatever he does as an acting attorney general is null and void and whatever other people in the d. O. J. Do in response to what he does may be null and void. We really have a very dangerous situation here. Already, the president appears to be distancing himself from the appoint tee the day after he named whittaker to take the job. The president said, i dont know Matt Whittaker after saying repeatedly before he does know him. He said so on this network. The New York Times says he has frequently visiting the oval office. Democrats want whittaker to recuse himself from the russian investigation. Some republicans argue there is a double standard when it comes to recuseals. Katherine heritage reporting. Reporter congressman, jerry nadler, said acting attorney general, Matt Whittakers past media appearances smacked of bias. He should recuse himself. He has expressed total hostilities to the investigation. He has said the investigation shouldnt go forward. Someone who has said that should not be in charge of deciding on the investigation. Reporter also, in january, the republican chairman of the house intelligence committee, devon nunez, alleged surveillance on the Trump Campaign will hand the gavel to ranking democrat, adam schiff. He said that whittaker will be investigated. We are going to find out whether he made commitments to the president about the probe, whether he is serving as a back channel to the president or his lawyers about the probe, whether he is doing anything to interfere with the probe. Its worth noting that some other House Republicans maintain that Deputy Attorney general rosenstein, who until recently oversaw the russian investigation, had his own conflicts. They pointed to the fact that rosenstein signed the final surveillance warrant renewal in june, 2017, for Trump Campaign aide, carter page, and that he could also be a witness in any obstruction case for the president s firing of fbi director, james comey. Rod rosenstein has an actual con sflikt. By definition, he is a witness and to oversee an investigation and to be a fact witness is always inappropriate. This isnt new to have a double standard. Democrats did not call for rosensteins recusal. He never recused himself, nor did he go to capitol hill to answer questions during a transcribed interview under oath. Allegations he considered recording the president and invoking the 25th amendment, shep. Katherine herridge reporting from washington. Lawmakers returned to washington after a break from the mid terms. They are facing another deadline to prevent a partial Government Shutdown less than a month from now. Mike emanuel reporting. Reporter shep, there are just 12 legislative days until december 7th, when part of the government runs out of money. House democratic leader, nancy pelosi, tried to rally her house democrats. We need to be unified and find Common Ground with republicans but stand our ground when we must. For now, republicans are still the majority in the house and the majority leader spoke to fox about the todo list when lawmakers return. We have a number of spending bills we have to get done. There are seven appropriation bills, one happens to be homeland. We have the farm bill out there as well. A number of things we have to Work Together to be done before the change of government comes the beginning of january. The wild card in all of this is how much President Trump intends to fight for his border wall. The House Homeland Security funding bill has 5 billion in it for the border wall. The Senate Measure has only 1. 6 billion. Negotiations are on going. The House Democratic leader would only say she favors using technology to do the job. We certainly have to protect or borders and democrats know that and we have always worked to do that. You would be open to supporting this . I said we are protecting our border. We have done that. There are many ways to protect the border before tens of billions of dollars building a wall where technology and personnel and the rest could possibly do the job. Typically, those retiring from congress or who lost their bids for reelection are eager to get out of town. President trump is back in the United States now and tweeting complaints about some of our nations allies. They are very concerned about all of these structures that you see here. In addition, we are getting a look at equipment that firefighters are using to beat back the walls of flames. Jonathan hunt reporting live from our west coast news hub. Jonathan . Reporter there is such incredible work being done on the ground by thousands of firefighters literally battling yard by yard to hold back and contain these fires. Some of the most critical work in saving homes and dousing the bigger outbreaks as quickly as possible is being done from the air by a fleet of firefightering aircraft. Helicopters and also small and nimble f2t aircraft and the much larger dc10s that can hold around 9,000 gallons of retardant. Then, there is this. Take a look. That is the sight and sound of the largest Fire Fighting aircraft, carrying 19,000 gallons of flame retardant and saving countless homes, both at the campfire in Northern California and the woolsey fire in l. A. The supertanker was based in colorado but was sent to california given the severity of the fires and it will stay as long as necessary. You take a look at the live picture of new fires popping up. We need all the help we can get. Jonathan, still waiting for damage estimates . Reporter the officials tell us it is just way too early in this fight to say what those damage costs will be. We know, though, that close to 7,000 homes have been destroyed in the campfire up north and you have to add in the damage to infrastructure such as power lines and the sheer cost of fighting the fire. Down here in malibu, hundreds of homes have been lost and in other communities hit by the woolse yech woolsey fire. The fire that hit Northern Californias wine county generated more than 2 billion in insurance claims. As we look at all these new fires, the cost will comfortably exceed that 2 billion for this time around. For anyone that wants to help, Officials Say sending money rather than supplies is always the best. Do your research on the xharities and send to the ones with the best reputations for using donations effectively. Shep, we have a long way to go as we watch those new fires breaking out this afternoon. Shep . Jonathan hunt reporting live from los angeles. Our next guest was working at a hospital in Northern California, in the town of paradise, when flames started moving in and fire officials told folks to get out now. Her name is nicole jolly. She is a surgical nurse. Here she is helping evacuate patients from the hospital about 80 miles north of sacramento. After that, she friday to get away from her car. Nicole jolly is with us live from sacramento. Nicole, thank you very much. Thank you for meeting with me. I heard you earlier on another network. It sounded like getting out was almost impossible and then you called your husband. I did. I called my husband when i was in my car and it was filling up with smoke. I thought, i dont even know what to do. I thought, maybe nick would know. I called him. I just said, im going to die. This car is filling up with smoke and i think im on fire. I said, i dont know what to do. Give the kids a hug. I think im going to die and he said, dont die, run. Get out of your car and run. I said, okay. I said, but i dont think i can make it out there, nick, because there is too much smoke and too much flames around everything. It was hard to explain, you know. I think he thought that i was just in the middle of the road and there was flames on the side of the road. The flames were in the middle of the road, everywhere, all around us. He said, dont die, run. I got out of my car and i started to run and i ran up to my friends vehicle and i looked inside of it and her doorknob was melted. I couldnt open it up. Her mirrors were melted and i thought she was gone. Then, i ran to the next vehicle, that one i opened up the door and was able to get inside and i burnt a hole in her front seat from my pants and. From your pants . I guess the back of my pants had either a hot ember or they were on fire. I dont even know at the time. I sat down and i burnt a hole in her Leather Seats and we sat there and prayed and i just said, you know, i dont think we are going to make this. I dont think we are going to make it out of here. She said, we are going to make it out, we are going to make it out. Then her vehicle started to fill up with smoke. I just remember in my head thinking, my husband told me to run. I cant stay here. I have to run. So i held her hand and i said, ive got to go, good luck. I let go and i ran out of her vehicle. I was running out of oxygen. I was just running up the hill. I just closed my eyes, because the hot embers were getting into my eyes and i was burning. I put my arm out and i ran into the back of a fire engine. The firefighters, i was banging on the door. They jumped out, grabbed me and put me into their fire truck and it was unbelievable. I thought, okay, im okay now. This is okay. I ended up they ended up putting fire blankets on the windows and calling for air support, the captain in the fire engine was calling for air support and said, we need air strike, we need air strike now. We are not going to make it. They got back on the radio and ill never forget it. They said, its impossible. We cant send you that. I just thought, oh, god, we are going to die. Im going to die again. It just kept going. It was just a nightmare that never ended. Out of nowhere, i pulled down the fire blanket and i saw a dozer. A dozer just came off to the side and started pushing the vehicles and pushing everybody out of the way that their cars were on fire and made a trail for us. We were able to turn around this huge fire engine and get off that road and get back to the hospital and we were able to start treating patients. So you left two neardeath experiences and went back to work . Yes. How the how did you do that . I just needed to stay busy. Im trained to be a nurse. It is a wonderful place and they have trained me well and ive gotten there with my team and we all just worked together. Did you get a chance to hug your kids and your husband yet . I did, yes. What did you say to them . It was awesome. Everybodys phone, we didnt have any service. I couldnt get ahold of my kids and my husband until close to 5 00 that night. This was all happening early, early in the morning. It was wonderful. Ill never forget those hugs. Nicole jolly, who left the flames to go save peoples lives, another hero in the fire. I appreciate you very much. Thanks so much for sharing your story. Nang you so much. Fox urgent now escalating violence in the middle east forcing Benjamin Netanyahu to rush home from meetings in paris. Military officials in israel say Palestinian Militants have fired dozens of rockets to their country but what happened before that that began it. The israelis went into the gaza strip for some sort of exercise that has multiple different explanations for it. During that, a number of palestinians were killed. Trey yanks reporting live at the border between israel and gaza. Reporter hi, there, shep. We are seeing severe escalation along the israel gaza border between the Israeli Military and hamas. I hear some sirens going off in the distance which likely means there is incoming rocket fire. Im going to have my cameraman pan up. You are seeing iron domes trying to intercept some rockets being fired right now over the border from gaza. A number of these rockets have been fired from the gaza strip today towards southern israel but moving forward, all we know about a lot of the rocket fire that has been taking place today, shep, is you can hear the explosions above me, is that we are seeing some rockets and mortars and additionally, we saw an antitank missile fired into southern israel that launched a lot of the rocket fire, more than 300 projectiles that have been shot in to southern israel today from gaza. Shep, i want to give you a little bit of background about what we know regarding what led up to the situation and a botched operation by Israeli Special forces. It was meant gather intelligence. According to sources we spoke with inside gaza and residents inside gaza, a number of the things that occurred are not known. There are a couple things we are not able to report due to israeli censorship laws. Here is what we know so far. Apologize for all the movement here. We are making sure we do take cover amid this rocket fire in southern israel. According to our sources, in gaza, this elite operation was taking place at a hamas checkpoint. When it was discovered these were israeli troops, a senior hamas commander was called to the scene and a gun battle ensued. The Israeli Air Force began to bomb hamas targets creating a path for them to leave gaza. Seven palestinians were left dead and a Lieutenant Colonel from the israeli army was also killed. During the day, there was a funeral for all seven palestinians that were killed. Following that funeral is when much of this rocket fire began. I did speak with a senior hamas official and i am getting a text message in response to what i had asked him. I asked him whether or not he was concerned this rocket fire from gaza was going to lead to a larger escalation in the region, Something Like operation protective edge, a war we saw in 2014. He responded with the word, escalation . I said, is there something you are concerned about. He said, look, the risk is there when it comes to back and forth rocket fire. We do know there was some progress being made earlier this week whether it came to egyptian negotiators trying to hammer out a seize fire agreement between hamas and israel. If tonight is any indication, and i can hear sirens off in the distance, you saw the rocket fire and interception, thats progress that was made. It is no longer really going to be on the table.
