Some cars fell on interstate 5 below. Traffic drove by during the morning rush. Take a look at this video from the scene. You can see the train hanging from the overpass there come a risk worth trying to get to people who are trapped at the time, the Associated Press reports that derailment killed at least six people, dozens more injured. Three or four of the cars were upside down according to the sheriffs office. Listen to the dramatic moment. This is the engineer talking over the radio. Amtrak 501, emergency emergency. We are on the ground. We are on the bridge over i5. We are on the freeway. We need ems asap. Looks like theyre starting to show appears below the derailment happened around 7 30 local time, 40 miles south of seattle near dupont, between stops at olympia and tacoma, washington. The train was southbound on the amtrak route. It connects 18 cities from eugene, oregon, to canada. This was 501. It was making its very first run on a newly constructed track and one local mayor recently warned highspeed train might kill somebody on this route. One that just ahead. Amtrak reporting, that words 70 passengers and five crew on board, a website that maps amtrak speed come at that speed was traveling at 81 Miles Per Hour when it derailed. That is 2 miles over the speed limit on the track. Investigators say, it is still too soon to determine whether speed had anything to do with the derailment, and so many first reports and up, that report of speed could very well end up incorrect. U. S. Official briefed on the investigation tells the Associated Press, it looks like the train may have hit something before it went off the track. In other words, their reports this afternoon that it is possible if there was something of some time on the track, and that may have caused all of this. It will be quite some time before we know for sure. Dan springer is live on scene in washington. Dan . Shep, it would make sense that this was traveling at 81 or at the height of it speed, 79 Miles Per Hour. It made that curve, because it was in a straight away down interstate 5. Southbound is of Interest Rate curve, and then the curve goes directly over the top of i5. You see the mangled mess of concrete and train cars that have left the track. That is a sharp curve that goes over the freeway, and by my count, i saw some drone video at least 9 of the 12 cars of the train left the track, and many of them are still dangling over the sides of the trestle. This was a harrowing search and rescue mission when all of the dozens and dozens of responders got here. We have heard amazing accounts of people, their car ended up in the woods, and ended up trying to break out windows and get out of there is water was rushing. It is now a recovery effort. All the survivors on the train had been taken off. All of them are gone to local hospitals. At least 77 people are at area hospitals and at least five hospitals will be used including an army hospital. Louis mccord is right next door. The Associated Press as you mentioned, six people are dead. The one Silver Lining here, this train was far less than its capacity. 70 passengers and five crewmen on board, capacity is 250. A lot less capacity on this train this morning as it dumped the track. The ntsb will be out this afternoon. They will have members of the go team here late this afternoon, and more arriving from washington, d. C. , tonight. To go over all of this. This is a major thoroughfare. Interstate 5 going from canada all the way down to the mexican border. 60,000 vehicles per day passed through here. This highway being closed down is a major inconvenience for everybody in this region, but right now, the obvious concern is for all those in local hospitals in the condolences for those families that lost loved ones today, shep. Shepard the very first trip for this train on this route, dan . That is right. This was all done in a effort to save about 1015 minutes off of the passenger train trip from seattle down to portland. This is a more direct route. It does not go as far west towards the puget sound. If you look at the u. S. Open when it was at chambers bay, you saw the passenger saenz going right along the golf course. That was the amtrak passenger train. No longer goes that way. It goes more inland and a more direct route. Im not sure the speed is any higher, but it is a shorter route more directly now and that is what opened up for the very first time today. We understand that the amtrak was planning six trips per day on this newly configured route. I do not believe these are brandnew tracks, because the bnsf has had tracks going over this highway i met trestle for many, many years. This is the first time it was ever used by amtrak in this configuration in this way. Shepard lets go to greg mckay, he was there driving on the freeway when the train derailed. 50 yards away, that must have been quite a sight. It was obvious he something impressive to see. Ive traveled a stretch of highway every morning, monday through friday, and i think youre just talking about it. I was surprised. The track runs parallel to the freeway going south, it no surprise to see the passenger train, ive never seen one before. It caught my attention. And soon after that, when traffic came to a very sudden and it stopped, and as soon as everybody darted from their lane of travel to the side of the road to avoid one another, i severely slicked up, it was crazy. I had to stare at it for a whil while. To see and understand what is going on in front of me, which 50 yards ahead, you see a train car hanging from the overpass and one behind it that landed on the freeway itself. It is very scary stuff. Shepard greg, i presume did you keep going . Were authority showing up . When we got there, i said, i think everybody was staring at it, tried to figure out what was going on. It was eerily quiet on the highway. There wasnt a whole lot of noise other than you saw some personnel from lewismcchord, who were traveling on the highway. Those folks were amazing and they rushed in to try to help the best they could. They came back and everybody with firstaid, towels, anything they can provide to help out. Im not competent in first aid or any of that, but i chose to stay away, and the best i could do in the video is to capture some of the moments and they are the ones who really first jumped out there. Soon after, i was maybe 10 minutes, 15 minutes, Emergency Personnel started to arrive. Getting cars out of the way and treating people. Shepard greg mukai who watch it happen. They want a couple weeks ago of this very line, one of the warnings came a mayor from a liquid it is along this route. According to the report of komo news, the mayor said it was only a matter of time before the highspeed rail killed somebody. The mayor then reported as state transportation officials to change it, because he considered the faster trains would be too close to vehicles and pedestrians. Trace gallagher is in the west west coast news. I remember when they spit up trains over here, traits they have across the country, it is a concern when theyre going 80, 90 Miles Per Hour. The mayor made these comments a City Council Meeting last week. We look at the live pictures and what he was talking about, exactly what happened. He said, at this train goes down along i5, 80 miles an hour, you have to have some kind of barrier barricading so the train can be kept away from the traffic and kept away from people. That was his big concern. It did not just our last week. The city of lakewood sued the Washington State department of transportation back in 2013 tried to get this whole thing stopped. It did not work, because the train was going today. The Washington State department of transportation issued a statement saying, this train, this route, is being tested now for several weeks. Today was the inaugural, the first time passengers were on board, but this route has been tested for several weeks. The tracks are not brandnew. They have been remodified, and the amtrak train can go on. If you look at the history of this thing like dan was saying earlier, the 501 would have gone along the puget sound. This saved 11, 15 minutes. It never has to go under tunneled bridges, singletrack, that can cause delays and doesnt have to go across those shrub currents that cause delays. Where the biggest factors, it no longer would have had to share that train track with the old Freight Train that chugged along at 30 miles. They wanted to do faster, and this was the rapid everybody said it might be more dangerous 181 million to get this section of the train up and running, and that was the clear problem that a lot of people had. Even with last week, joint base lewismcchord around this area, set a warning, as a monday, we are going to have amtrak trains going through here at 79, 80 Miles Per Hour. The speed limit in that area is 79 Miles Per Hour. We are being told, the department of transportation, at the time and crash it was going 81. 1 Miles Per Hour. And then you talk about the positive train control, we had heard so much about that, and that pennsylvania crash back in april of 2016 shepard sorry for the interruption, state police speaking. 8005239101. Without specifics about anyone in particular, what sort of injuries where you seen . The most severely injured patients has already been taken out. The state of washington saved, the new highspeed train could reach speeds of 79 Miles Per Hour, but as you mentioned, a website that tracks and amtrak speeds, it was at 81 when it derailed. Leading up to the opening of the highspeed train, number of local leaders in the area had expressed concerns about the high speeds. Accidents just like this when that happened as a result. Todays derailment is the second one this year in that area. July, another amtrak train crash with nearly 200 people on board. Although nobody was seriously injured in that accident, shep. These are pictures that have come to us recently from our network new Service Affiliates and fox nation, katie c, their reporting, 30 miles south of seattle, and these pictures from komo news, it is backed up just about as far as. Derailed well crossing an overpass. Train cars slipped into an interstate. Dissociated press reports, six people have been killed. Fox has not confirmed that number. Today was the first day of public use of those tracks. Federal investigators say they are on their way to Washington State. Chief correspondent Jonathan Hunt from our news hub there. This was amtrak 501, electron 6 10, but the time it got to the new station in tacoma, washington, with its last stop before the accident, it was running 30 minutes late. That will have caused the interest to those ntsb investigators, who are on their way there now. We know that about 10 minutes after it left tacoma, that is when it left the track. It was according to website the speeds at 81. 1 Miles Per Hour. According to the Washington State department of transport, the speed limit on that section of track is 79 miles. It added that two per hour difference should not make any difference. It should not cause the train any particular problem. There are some reports of witnesses who were onboard the trains, it felt as though the train hit something immediately before it jumped the track. There was two engines and 12 passenger cars. Of that total, of 14, 13 of those left the track. The only thing left entirely on the track was the locomotive that was bringing you see taking the lefthand curd as you look at the aerial pictures there, shep. As for the engine, 77 transported to various hospitals in the area. That includes people who are traveling on the eye five. We know for instance, that the Madigan Army Medical Center on the joint base of lewismcchord near bike took seven patients. Nine of those are in serious, and 11 reported to be in fair conditions. Shepard information from the mayor at that give a warning about the strain . This is mayor don anderson. He is the mayor of lakewood, immediately north of where this terrible accident happened. He warned exactly two weeks ago in a Council Meeting that some sort of accident with this new highspeed train and track was virtually inevitable. He called on the department of transport officials and he is now confirmed those comments to us that he told officials to go back and look at further upgrades in terms of safety. He said there was bound to be an accident here. They are terribly prophetic words we are hearing today. Shepard thank you, Jonathan Hunt. We are hearing from a woman, she and her friend saw the train going by, and chatted about up for they relied something terrible happen. This is what they told our five station, kc pq and seattle. We were commenting, what a great ride it is a fun trip to go to portland. And probably about 2 minutes later, my friend denise looks up and says, something is wrong with the train. I thought, read, it looks like the trestle went down. No, it was the train. We were probably a few couple hundred yards from it. We stopped, got out of our car. We ran and tried to help people. And other people or running to the scene as well. We are helping with people. Lots of injuries. People eventually, it became a stretchers, paramedics, people will pulling first eight kids out of their car. But he jackets on people. Were just trying to do everything we could to comfort everyone, do what we could. Shepard lets turn to dan, he says he was driving on the interstate when he saw the train derail. Says he got out and climbed into the train to try to help passengers. Good for you to be here. What did you find in the train . Thank you for having me. We ran on the rail and not a lot of people had gone up. Just on the freeway. The first two cars we went into. Most of the people were able to climb out. No major injuries. Some minor head injuries. A lot of people having trouble breathing because i got the wind knocked out of them, or maybe worse. We do not know yet. We ran up there, did my best to evaluate if people were badly injured. And then escorted them down to the freeway, where we had hoped that medical response would show up, and they did about 15 minutes after the initial incident from there. Worked my way down to the more seriously damage cars. There was an excellent officer i took as they dont come i dont remember it off the top of my head. He had a flashlight, and i had a headlamp, we worked our way through the train cars one at a time. When we find someone, we would evaluate their injuries and then try to either get them out of the car or assigned someone to be there with them, keeping them warm and keeping them from moving until we could get a gurney in there to remove them. We worked away all the way to the cars with the flashlight and the headlamp. Some of the cars and we had to crawl on the ground underneath the wreckage with broken glass in the once we got the majority of the cars that were upright cleared out, we broke through the window, jumped down out, and theyre upside down with the rush and as for the majority of the major injuries were, people were pinned underneath the train. Thats where four of the fatalities were still. Thats where we spend the next 40 minutes, trying honestly, theres not a whole lot you can do. Shepard it sounds like you did more than what most might have. What a great guy. I know that they will be thanking you whether they know your name or not. You do you what you cannot a day like this pretty sound like youre able to do a lot. Dan councilmen, one of our heroes of the day. Speaking of which, dan springer is live, report or unseen. North west region to seattle, but in dupont today. Hello, dan. Unfolding in like he said, that witness, it look like most of the fatalities where the people who were in one of those train cars that ended up on its top as it fell over the side of the trestle at 740 this morning. We had some updated numbers from the state patrol. There was 12 cars and two engines and then train, and 13 pieces. All but one of the 14 pieces left those tracks and many of them jumped over the side of the trestle and onto the southbound lane of interstate 5. Killing at least six people and injuring dozens and dozens of others. This was a highly controversial project. This real project cost 181 million to create a new route. A highspeed train from basically tacoma to portland, and it was all intended to shave roughly 10 to 15 minutes off a passenger train trip from the city of seattle down to portland. And frankly, the people in lakewood, the mayor of lakewood, he sued to block this entire project, and it was unsuccessful. Just two weeks ago in a public meeting, he said, it was only a matter of time before somebody was killed in this highspeed train, because it cuts through a lot of populated areas, including his city. This is not a populated area. This is an area that is south of lewis mccord. It is rustic. You have off to the righthand side, a golf course, and to the left, you have the base. The train tracks paralleled the freeway, and then there is a sharp turn that goes over the top of the freeway, and that is exactly where this train left its tracks. And it ntsb will try to get to the bottom of it. Their team starts getting out here tonight in late tomorrow. Shepard dan springer in Washington State. We are watching some other important news. In washington, lawmakers are racing the clock. Washington, d. C. , i should say, passing the republican a tax bill and prevent a Government Shutdown at the end of the week. Two separate things. Right now, the budget battle is a game of chicken. Democrats and republicans stared at each other down, and neither side has flinched. The state of the federal government hangs in the balance, or at least the shortterm fate as they try to prevent a Government Shutdown. We are live on capitol hill with all your news. Stay tuned. Shepard lawmakers on capitol hill are facing a jampacked week and running out of time to get things done. Republicans say they hope to pass the tax bill by wednesday. That would be President Trumps first major legislative win since he took office. Congress also has to come up with a plan to keep the government up and running past friday, and with senate rules, it has to be a bipartisan deal. Peter doocy is on both stories come alive on capitol hill. Lets start with taxes. Before, in the last 2 minutes, one of the three republican senators who still had not staked out a position officially on the tax will came out and said, he will vote yes. Just on twitter, just finished reading the final tax cuts and jobs act. It will he will probably vote for. Somebody also, one of the other republicans who announced late last week, he would vote for a peer bob corker being accused by democrats of the corker kickback. He only wants to support this bill because it would benefit people who own the same kind of real estate that he owns. In fact, nancy pelosi just said this. She said, the g. O. P. Tech scam is not a tax reform, it is offering assignments or of giveaways to the wealthy powerful, explore the deficit and put middleclass. But she insists, they did not know about the revision, it never briefed on it, so cannot possibly have informed his decision. And orrin hatch come at the very influential on this issue. Senate finance Committee Chairman back in a separate it takes a great deal of imagination and likely no small part of bipartisanship, a provision that has been public for over a month debated on the floor of the house of representatives, included in a house passed bill and identified by the committee and tax in issue requiring a compromise between countries was somehow a covert and lastminute addition to the conference. With the support, there are two outstanding senators. We do not know how they tend to vote. Collins, they can only afford to lose one republican. Because it john mccain will not be here. Shepard what are you hearing about a deal to keep the government from shutting down . We are being told, republicans still have not even reached out to the democrats to try to figure out how to keep the lights on past friday night. We are inching closer to a shutdown. The pumpkins really they want military pulled out intensively. Democrats do not want to vote for anything unless they get a separate deal on the dreamers and some sort of solidified before the new year with what is happened to them. It doesnt sound like there will be much talk about until once this gets resolved. And if they cannot figure out by friday midnight, shutdown on saturday. Shepard peter doocy on capitol hill.
