Remember, the big deal about this, john, when we get john roberts up, the big deal if we can get this informant and whether the president made the order or whether the doj made the order and the president had strong influence. John . Good afternoon to you, trace. Im told by folks here at the white house that it unfolded this way. The process was already underway. That chairman grassley contacted the department of justice wanting to left the gag order on this informant that was involved years ago with an fbi investigation into whether or not there was some sort of bribery involved with this uranium one deal. The president was presented with the information. The president said it sounds reasonable to left the gag order. He had a conversation with chairman grassley who told him about the importance of getting information from this informant. Im fold a call was made with the white House Counsel and the department of justice to say that the president thinks this is probably a good idea and should likely get done. So that, im told, was the extent of the president s involvement. This again was already underway when the president weighed in on it. The white house insists the president was within his purview to weighin on Something Like this. Theyre leaving it there. Something else is interesting, within about 15 days or so, special counsel, robert mueller, is expected to submit his first expense report which will tell us how much the investigation is costing. The president tweeting out, its commonly agreed that there was no collusion between russia and trump. Was collusion with Hillary Clinton . I asked the press secretary about that and whether the president thought the investigation is a waste of money. Lets listen to her response. Is the president suggesting that the mueller special investigation is a waste of money . The president has been clear what his position throughout this process is. Thats not the only investigation taking place. Congress has spent a great deal of time on this, a better part of a year. All of your news organizations have spent a lot of money on this as well, which we consider a pretty big waste. I think our position hasnt changed since day one. Were seeing now if theres any collusion with russian is with the dnc and not our campaign. There wont be a lot of details in how the monies with spent, trace. We got new information on what will happen on the 401 k s, which is a big controversy. At the moment, what will happen with 401 k s can be explained by this gesture. Dont know just yet. The president tweeted out on monday morning that he thought that 401 k taxfree contributions should be off limits. That prompted the feud with senator bob corker. Senator brady said, 401 k contributions should be on the table to which the president responded that afternoon from a question from me that he thinks kevin brady is a fantastic guy but he knows how important 401 k s have. Now we know what chairman brady might be looking at, the rothification of 401 k s. He may increase the amount of money that you can put into your 401 k . Its set at 18,500. Might increase it to 20,000. The plan may be brady is not talking about that to lowter taxfree contribution of that but allow you on top of that taxfree contribution with after tax dollars add to the 401 k so you get a taxfree contribution up front and then you can get taxfree innings on the back. What do you make of the president s involvement in this this lifting of the gag order for the former fbi informant . Look, i can understand why the Justice Department should make Justice Department decisions and the president should not be telling the Justice Department what to do. On the other hand, lets look at what adam schiff, the top democrat on the House Intelligence Committee is objecting to. He saying that hes upset at the idea that an fbi informant who would be allowed to talk to congress will be allowed to talk to congress. Thats a very out position for a member of congress to take that he doesnt want to talk to an fbi informant to find out what happened. But it seems to be part and parcel of this real kind of pullback on the part of a lot of democrats that were hellbent on wanting to investigate donald trump and his possible collusion with the russians feeling that somehow when the subject has turned to possible collusion between Hillary Clinton and the democrats and the russians and thats what this informant might be able to speak to, they dont want to follow that so intently. So its kind of a curious thing. Trace yeah, you have a lot of news organizations saying look, fox brought up this uranium one thing. Which is not true. It was the hill. The democrats are now backing off this saying well, this is a different issue. The president should not be involved in matters the doj should be presiding over. We look that the doj pulled the trigger on this, not the president. Again, all the doj is doing is saying this fellow under a gag order and couldnt talk to congress can now talk to congress. May turn out he has a story to tell or may not. Why on earth would any member of congress not want to hear what they has to say unless theyre worried about what the person has to say. Yeah. I want to move on to tax reform now. The time line in this seems to be speeding up. Now theyre talking about thanksgiving, which a lot of people be difficult. You think were three, four weeks away from thanksgiving. We dont even know john roberts asked the question about the 401 k . I dont know. Were not quite sure what were going to do with the 401 k . Not sure what were going to do with the salt thing, the state and local tax initiative. A lot of questions and its fasttracked to nowhere. I dont know that its fasttracked to nowhere. But you said we dont know much about this. We dont know anything about this. Were going to find out november 1 when kevin brady, the chairman of the house ways and means committee, the taxwriting committee in the house reveals it. Thats the first time we get a plan that indicates how the rates will be cut, what income levels the various rates will kick in what will happen on state and local taxes what will happen on 401 k . They havent told us anything about this among other reasons because theres a huge scramble right now by all the lobbyists, all the special interests to talk to the house ways and means staff, all the other republicans in power in washington to try to say hey, dont hurt my interests if youre going to have to get some money to pay for these tax cuts, take it out of somebody elses interest. So were talking about between november 1, which is next wednesday, i think, and thanksgiving, which is three weeks from the day after that, were talking about passing a bill in the house and the senate that nobody has seen yet. Part of the reason, part of the strategy behind this, trace, the feeling is the longer it takes, whether more opposition builds up, whether its congress about constituents losing Tax Deductions or lobbyists losing tax advantage. So lets do this at warp speed before any opposition can form. My guess is this is going to take longer than that and be messier than that. Well probably be declaring tax reform alive or dead and back and forth a lot of times before this time story is written and the final bill is written. This is vital to the gop. Again, now they said finally, we cant do it because theres a democrat in the white house. Give us a republican president. They got the keys to the car and still cant get anything done with repeal and replace. If theres one issue the republicans have stood for for decades now, its the idea of tax cuts. If they would have control of all three arms of the government, are unable to pass tax reform, boy, i sure wouldnt want to be a republican running for reelection in 2018. The most recent polls show 15 approval of republicans in congress. You know, people are holding them accountable. They should. They put them in power. They need to put up. Trace i have to go, chris. I think republicans are being very careful and they are considering things that are small sticking points like the 401 k aspect. President trump has led and stood up on twitter and said he wouldnt allow us to tax the pretax amount on the 401 k contributions by americans. Why should we make it harder for americans to save for retirement . At the same time, bigger states are throwing up their hands in new york and new jersey over eliminating the salt deduction, which would allow americans to be quadruple taxed. In america, it would be a 72 billion tax increase. Theyre trying to find a solution. Republicans are working together. This isnt like Obamacare Repeal and replace where there was a faction saying we have to do it this way and another faction saying we shouldnt repeal. We should repair. A more gop orthodoxy undertaking. Trace just for clarity, he says salt. That means state and local taxes. When you talk about new york and california and illinois, new jersey, very high tax states, that would hurt a lot of people. You have people on your side of the aisle saying listen, if youre against this whole salt thing, you have to stand up and say so. If youre a congressman in these states a senator in california, new jersey, illinois, maybe you shouldnt vote for this. Exactly. I couldnt have said it better. I want to point out, im getting action alerts daily from the National Association of realtors and the National Home Builders Association coming out strongly against this bill. They say that if this passes, we will lose about a little more than 10 of the value of our homes. Consider the median home value is just about 189,000. So that means the average american stands to lose about 19,000 of value in their homes. Thats not going to help if that 1,000 a year tax savings for middle class america is not going to help when youre talking about losing on average 19,000 of your home value. Trace evan, robin has a good point. Because we dont know what is in this bill, hes bringing up, you guys are talking about salt and the audience is salt . What about salt . What about the home deduction. A lot of things in this bill we dont know what is in it because quite frankly it hasnt been laid out very well, evan. So if theyre going to get it through in the next three or four weeks before thanksgiving, somebody has to give us some clarity. First of all, robin raises an interesting points. At the end of the day, youll have people very happy with the contents and a lot of lobbyists pushing action alerts to robin saying we dont want this because theyre going to use the scare tactics because theyre not getting what they want.
