Whether President Trump shared highly classified information with the russians. Putin comparing american politics to a mental illness. Lets get to it. First from the fox news deck this afternoon, the Michael Flynn investigation has taken a dramatic turn on capitol hill. Some of the most power fful politicians are demanding comey to testify and in public. One of the highest profile republicans of them all is comparing the controversy to watergate. Heres what the Armed ServicesCommittee Chairman john mccain said last night. The only thing i can say is, i think weve seen this movie before. I think its reaching the point where its of watergate size and scale and a couple other scandals that weve seen. Its a centipede that the shoe continues to drop. Every couple days, theres a new aspect of this really unhappy situation. You know, my friends, none of us, no matter what our political leanings are, no matter how we feel about trump feel this is not good for america. Really unhappy situation. Senator mccain today expanded on the comments in an interview with fox news. I was using that iran contra and other like similar situations, not just watergate. Iran contra. The way that Ronald Reagan was able to over come iran contra, everything came out so there were no more questions. We need to get all the information out and move forward. Shepard sunshine is the best disinfecta disinfectant. Senator mccain said while watergate took many months, this latest scandal takes hours. All of this comes after President Trump asked the fbi director james comey to stop investigating the former National Security adviser Michael Flynn and that comey kept a memo about the conversation. The New York Times broke the story and fox news has confirmed sources close to james comey said that president made the request days after firing flynn. According to the comey memo, comey was in the oval office when the president asked everybody else in the room to leave including president mike pence and the attorney general jeff sessions. Everybody out but the two men. Thats when the memo indicates the president asked james comey to stop investigating Michael Flynn. According to the document, the president told comey, i hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting flynn go. And hes a good guy. I hope you can let this go. The memo indicates the president told director comey that he should consider putting reporters in prison for publishing previously classified information. The white house denied the memo. Today the president blasted the news media to graduates of the United StatesCoast Guard Academy. He said you cant let them get you down, get in the way 0 your dreams. President trump fired james comey last week and the president later admitted russian was on his mind when he made the decision. President trump suggested on twitter that he might have tapes of his conversations with the fbi director. The white house refuses to confirm or deny that recordings exist. Now it appears the former fbi director may have responded through sources by beating the president to the punch. The Senate Intelligence committee asked james comey to testify and in public and behind closed doors. It requested that the fbi turn over any notes or memo that comey may have written about his conversations with the white house. Top members of the Senate Judiciary commit did requested all memos as well and asked the white house to turn over any tapes or recordings. Lindsey graham said in a statement the sooner mr. Comey testifies before the better for our nation. For all practical purposes, the political process will be ground to a halt by these allegations. Jason chaffetz has called on the fbi to return over any comey memo. He said i have my subpoena pen ready. Well have more ahead on the comments from chairman chaffetz. While some republicans are demanding answers, one gop congressman has gone a step further. The house overtight committee member, justin amash tells the hill that if the president did ask to quash the investigation it would merit impeachment. The trial would be in the senate hypothetically. Paul ryan is standing by the president. He says he expects congress to hear from james comey and warns republicans to not jump to conclusions and says we need the facts. Its obvious theres some people out there that want to harm the president. We have an obligation to carry out our oversight regardless of which party is in the white house. Before rushing to judgment, we get all the pertinent information. Shepard a recorder shouted a question at speaker ryan asking if he has full confidence in the president and speaker ryan said i do. Some lawmakers are asking about the confidence after sharing confidential information with the russian ambassador. This happened during a meeting at the white house the day after the white house fired director comey. The white house says the information was wholly inappropriate. Mcmasters said that phrase nine times. Today Vladimir Putin has weighed in finally. Hes offered to hand over recordings of the meeting to help settle the controversy, as he put it. Much more ahead on the latest reaction from capitol hill. First, were learning new information about director comey and his memo. For that, we turn to Catherine Herridge live in washington. We just heard a moment from the senior democrat on the Senate Intelligence committee that wants the comey memos with the crush of reporters there, he says hes confident that comey will appeal and the bureau never asked for additional help. I think we have enough resources. That was reiterated by director mckay in public appearing last thursday. And also reiterated that director mccabe said this investigation is extraordinary to the fbi and theyre going to make sure they get to the bottom of no matter where it leads. In addition to Senate Intelligence committee request, the bureau have asked to provide any notes by the director and shared with his director, Andrew Mccabe under the obama administration. So this request now expands the record search to the 2016 election when comey thought he had to speak about the clinton case because his boss had the appearance of a conflict after attorney general lynch met with bill clinton on a tarmac before Hillary Clintons fbi interview. In the last few minutes, weve had a new tweet from Jason Chaffetz. He says that hes getting a hearing on the calendar, but waiting on comey writing that he has a new contact number, shep. Shepard yeah. Catherine herridge, in your recording, youre in contact with a lot of people in the know. Im curious to know what theyre telling you big picture. Law enforcement sources told fox news that because of his background as a lawyer, career prosecutor and working within the government, comey really is a copious note taker and Standard Practice at the bureau and the Justice Department to take notes during or immediately after a meeting to memorialize the conversation. The timing of this has peoples attention today. If you remember in early march two weeks after this meeting between comey and the president , he publicly stated his intent to serve out his tenyear term at Boston College at Cyber Security as note worthy with his unease at that meeting. Boston is a leader of thinking and educating on these important issues. So this is a great place to have it. Hope you do it many more times. Youre stuck with me for about another 6 1 2 years. Its pretty unusual for a serving fbi director to talk about serving out his fixed term or typically what the fixed term is. Theres a precedent for using fbi notes. There was a dispute in the bush era over the issue of surveillance and then fbi director Robert Muller provided his notes. Shepard on the matter of Michael Flynn, anything new . We havent heard his side of the story for some time. According to people close to the National Security adviser, he never asked trump to block any of the probes. Flynn never spoke to the president to end or influence any on going investigations of him. The source could not speak to trumps private conversations but said it was significant that sally yates confirmed that flynns name appeared unredacted. So in plain sight in those intelligence reports. They said that is extraordinary around they see it as more evidence that flynn was singled out by the previous administration, shep. Shepard thanks, catherine. Youre watching the president has come back from his speaking engagement at the Coast Guard Academy where he gave the commencement address where he ripped into the news media. The cameras are there. Theres the hope that he might say something. Its a pool camera. Its like its on a boat at times. He will get into the choppers and head on back to 1600 in just a minute. Democrats are renewing their calls for a special prosecutor in the Russian Investigation after the report about comeys memo. To some degree, its dividing the party. Theres different theories on how to process. Some democrats are saying theres no question this was obstruction of justice. Listen to the texas congressman al green on the house floor this morning. I rise today, mr. Speaker, to call for the impeachment of the president of the United States for obstruction of justice. Theres a belief in this country that no one is above the law. And that includes the president of the United States of america. Shepard congressman green on the extreme on one end of the democratic party. We havent heard anything like that. Other democrats including top democrat on the house Intelligence Committee are warning not to go to that extreme. No one ought to in my view rush to embrace the most extraordinary remedy that removes the president from office. I think were a long way from knowing the facts here at this point. Among those serious allegations are just that today. Theyre allegation thats appeared in the newspaper report. But theres allegations that will easily subject to prove. Shepard other democrats say its too soon to talk about impeachment. That word is being used and often. Lets listen here. Chances of saying anything are slim to none. Theres a Pool Reporter there. He may get a question shouted. You never know. Hes waving now. It is remarkable and notable at least i dont know if its remarkable. Its notable that his tweet storms have ended. The twitter the twitterization of the president seems to have ebbed yesterday after this information about memos. Make no mistake, the word is theres not a memo. There are lots of memos. Lots of memos that fbi director comey has taken notes of this kind, copious notes going back to the bush administration. If youre an fbi agent, the word is, if its not written down, it didnt happen. Especially as director comey has said through sources or, you know, communicators that he was uneasy with some of the conversations. So its our understanding that he was uneasy with more than one conversation and more than one note. Do i know this . I dont know this. Well know soon enough. Peter doocy is on capitol hill. The divide on the democratic side, its not so much of anybody supporting him. Its how extreme theyre going on the day. Right, shep. The most extreme was that al green called for President Trumps impeachment. When he did that, he rebuked by fitzpatrick. He reminded green that he cant make unproving accusations like obstruction of justice like that on the floor of congress. Very few democrats that we heard from that are willingly to push for impeachment like green. The week did start off with nancy pelosi saying she doesnt think her side has a case against President Trump yet and has continued off all of these leaks with democratic leadership trying to gather information before they publicly push for impeachment against President Trump. Im not afraid of the i word. Independent. Independent commission. Independent investigator. Thats what i support. Thats also the general consensus of our democratic leadership. So the i word they like is investigation, not impeachment. Congress woman Maxine Waters said yesterday that she basically prefers impeachment over the democrats winning back the white house in 2020. That is not a very widely held view among democrats in the house or in the senate. I talked to a few Democratic Senators a few hours ago. Theyre basically saying before there can be any talk about impeachment, they need to know more about the russia case than just what they read in the paper. Some of your colleague s are talking about impeach meant. What do you think im a prosecutor. I want to see the evidence. No time to talk about that until we see the evidence. Senator king, an independent from maine that votes with the democrats last night said he thought we were moving towards impeachment but very quickly walked that back this morning saying that he does not think were there yet. Shepard thanks, peter. It will be interesting to watch this. Will republicans now want to get all of the information that they can find, all of us out in the open. So whatever it is that is coming, good, bad or indifferent, it can be ended before the midterm elections. Thats one strategy. The other strategy is to slowroll this thing. It will be interested if not telling. It will be interesting to see which it is that republicans tend to prefer. The russian president Vladimir Putin said president did not share classified information with his countrys ambassador and foreign minister and offered to give u. S. Lawmakers a transcript of the meeting to prove it. As if a russian transcript of anything would prove anything to anyone. Yes, with sound effects. That naturally led to questions about whether russia recorded the conversation, which might be different. Today the secretary of state Rex Tillerson said he doesnt have a clue. Mr. Secretary, Vladimir Putin is offering Congress Transcripts of the meeting. You think the russians were bugging the oval office . I would have no way to know that. Shepard russia bugging a meeting. Nobody is buying the idea that the russian leader has anything to offer. I dont talk to murderous dictators like Vladimir Putin. He says he doesnt use gps guided bombs to bomb hospitals in syria. Thats untrue. His word doesnt mean a lot. And in a different interview, the main senator Susan Collins says its absurd that anybody would take any evidence from putin. Rich edson is at the state department. What else did vlad have to say . He offered denials, criticisms and jokes. He said hes going to reprimand his foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov for failing to share intelligence with him after the meeting with trump. Putin said the u. S. Has political schizophrenia. What surprises me, theyre shaking up the domestic political situation in the United States using antirussian slogans. Either they dont understand the damage theyre doing to their own country, in which case theyre stupid or they understand everything and dangerous and corrupt people. This comes as the United States is trying to negotiate with syria. Shepard theres word that other nations are worried about sharing intelligence with the United States now. New validity to that . Theres some officials that say other nations would have pause or concern of sharing information because of what happened last week. We spoke with one former ambassador u. S. Ambassador to nato and russia that says the United States has explaining to do on how they handle their intelligence. I think we have some reassuring to do. I think the administration can be effective and convincing people that they can share with us and we can share with them. I think its critical if were going to deal with threats like isis ordeal with the threatening behavior of russia, that we have full confidence there our key partners. National security adviser h. R. Mcmaster said that the president s conversation with the russian minister was wholly appropriate. Shepard thanks, rich. The markets hate uncertainty. Today and for the First Time Since the white house turmoil began, theyre reacting with concern. Analysts say traders are worried that president s trumps c controversies delay tax reforms. Were minus 300. Much more ahead on the white house in crisis. Next, ill speak with a. B. Stoddard about the brutal decision facing every republican in washington. Every one of them with a big choice to make. And pdq. Thats coming up from the fox news deck on this wednesday afternoon. Theres nothing traditional about my Small Business so when it comes to technology, i need someone that understands my unique needs. My dell Small Business advisor has gotten to know our business so well that is feels like hes a part of our team. With one phone call, he sets me up with tailored products and services. Because your home is where our heart is. Shepard continuing coverage of the fallout on the report that President Trump requested that james comey and the investigation of the former National Security adviser, Michael Flynn. The New York Times broke the story citing that comey wrote after the conversation, the memo, fox news has confirmed that. Several committees demanding to see any records of the president S Communications with director comey. A. B. Stoddard is here from real clear politics. Good to see you. Good to see you. Shepard you said republicans have a choice to make and soon. What is it . Well, theyre waiting i think paralyzed until comey comes and testifies on capitol hill. He wants to do an opposition and he will have to answer questions about what happened in the oval office, what transpired in that conversation and why he did not bring it to the attention of the attorney general, the department of justice or tell anybody else at the fbi like Andrew Mccabe that testified last week that there was no interference in the investigation thus far. We did he inform the house chairman of the house intelligence Committee Chairman, the ranking members about this along the way . He might have an explanation for that. That makes things look perilous for the president or might be some strange james comey explanation that allows members to say this is not what it seems. If he says he absolutely saw it as potential obstruction of justice but had a good reason for not sharing it for those that recused themselves into an investigation for not telling the truth about meeting with the russian ambassador, that comey feels he had to keep it quiet. If theres Something Like that that really implies influence on the investigation, that will probably prompt members to say we have to move on to some kind of other independent probe and that yes, perhaps could be a president trying to intimidate and fbi director into closing an investigation. At this point, theyre waiting to have to make that decision depending on what they hear from comey. Until we find out when hes coming, theyre waiting in a very High Pressure situation. Shepard what is it that moves the pendulum over . I ask because i think a lot of our viewers and people that i speak with on this matter all over the place think this is some kind of emotional loyalty thing going on. Isnt this really just about percentages . When republicans or if at some point they look at the numbers and they go, if i stick with him, i cant way. Since i cant win with him, im turning against him. What is it that makes that happen . Thats absolutely the case. Theyre already watching President Trumps polling numbers, which are getting a little bit worse. We have not seen i dont think the full impact of whats happened in seven days yet. You know that 24 seats separate the republican majority from the minority. Theres very good chance the democrats could take back the house seat next year in november and regain control of the house. So members who are really having a tough time in that healthcare fight, members in the districts that Hillary Clinton won or that President Trump by not a lot, maybe 5 Percentage Points or less and theyre being asked by constituents, whats going on with the Russian Investigation, why is congress not investigating the conflicts of interest with President Trump with his business dealings . At some point, its about political fortunes and not whether they can give Party Loyalty under President Trump. Shepard im out of time. Who could lead a turn on this matter . Who would be the person . A bob corker of the en tennessee or a John Mccain Lindsey Graham thing . It will be the senior voices that are worried theyll lose their seats and the house will go democrat next year. Shepard thanks, a. B. Thanks, shep. Shepard President Trump speaking at the coast guard graduation ceremony. It was a doozy. He did not mention the comey memo. He did have some very strong words about the way he says reporters are treating him. That and the latest reaction from the white house coming up on fox news channel. Shepard the white house continues to deny that President Trump asked james comey to drop the fbi investigation into the former National Security adviser Michael Flynn. Sean spicer just repeated that denial to reporters on air force one. The president himself has not spoken about the issue or the comey memos specifically. He had this to say at the Coast Guard Academys graduation ceremony. Look at the way ive been treated lately. Especially by the media. No politician in history and i say this with great purity has been treated worse or more unfairly. You cant let them get you down. Shepard President Trump on his way back to the white house with john roberts is now treating people badly and worse. John, what did sean spicer have to say there . The president just arrived, by the way, marine one just took off. What did sean spicer on the white house or the president have to say that would kind of move the story along . Not much. Sean spicer questioned about it several times aboard air force one, which is the smaller version from connecticut. The question was several times about what the president said in the meeting with james comey and not given much. Heres audio. The president has been very clear that the account that was published of how the event occurred could you confirm we made it clear. Im not going to get further comment on that. All we have to go on is the president s assertion yesterday that the conversation is describe in this comey memo, which no News Organization has seen, did not happen the way it was the president did not say what he said to james comey, only that he never asked him to drop the investigation to Michael Flynn. Today at the Coast Guard Academy, we saw a very familiar President Trump with a posture that was defined, under fire and vowing to fight on. Listen here. Over the course of your life, you will find that things are not always fair. You will find that things happen to you that you do not deserve and that are not always warranted. But you have to put your head down and fight, fight, fight. Never ever give up. Again, we havent seen this memo. The contents were confirmed to fox news a short time ago. Theres people in congress, shep that are trying to get ahold of the actual memo itself. Jason chaffetz sent a letter to the fbi asking for that and other memos that comey may have written over hiS Communications with the president. Were also told though by a source close to comey that there may be more memos about to be revealed as well. That should be interesting. The president scheduled to fill comeys job, hes scheduled meetings. Do we know with whom . We do. An interesting surprise. The president upon his return will be meeting with four candidates for fbi director. Among them, take a look at this. Former connecticut senator joe lieberman. He has a degree from yale but has no Law Enforcement background. He ran for Vice President on the ticket with al gore in 2000. The democrat and independent for decades. I dont know how real this would be in terms of his consideration for the fbi. Hes 75 years old and again no Law Enforcement background. Certainly kind of is a little bit of a wakeup call to the democrats to say that the president is thinking outside the box with this pick. The other one that hes talking with this afternoon, the former oklahoma governor, former u. S. Attorney, Frank Keating who himself is 73 years old. He will be talking with the acting director of the fbi, Andrew Mccabe and richard mcfeelly who is also in the fbi. Shepard thanks, john. As we reported, the republican chairman of the House Oversight committee has asked james comey to testify next week. Jason chaffetz has demanded the fbi turn over all memos and communications between comey and President Trump. Congressman chaffetz tweeted the Oversight Committee will get the comey memo if it exists. I need to see it sooner rather than later. I have my subpoena pen ready. Jason chaffetz argued that he wouldnt open an investigation until theres evidence. Mike emanuel continues live on can toll hill. Congressman chaffetz said hes having trouble getting in touch with james comey. Thats right. He told me a number that he used to communicate with the former fbi director is not working. So hes reaching out publicly to say he wants to track him down. That includes sending out a tweet earlier today. Paul ryan made clear the relevant congressional committees will be thorough in doing their work. I will leave it to the committees doing investigations, just remember, theres an investigation occurring at the fbi. An investigation in the house and an investigation in the senate. We have three investigations going on. Im not going to micro manage or armchair investigations. He went on to say their job is to get to the facts and to be sober about doing it, shep. Mike, you spoke with congressman chaffetz about his future in congress. Ive read a lot of things. Thats right. It sounds like he does not intend to be around here much longer. Chairman chaffetz said that he has his plans and hes going to get this investigation launched but sounds like hes going to continue on his personal time line. He says theres always things to investigate but at the right time, its time to pass the baton. He said there will be a new oversight Committee Chairman and expects that person will take that responsibility very seriously, shep. Well receiveded by all accounts. And then flew to andrews, got off the air force one, got on marine one, flew back to the white house. When he got back to the white house, it was time for that walk across the lawn that president s have been doing since fluff was a kitten and shes a full blown cat. During that walk, we have come to see reporters yell questions at president s. Sometimes if theyre in the mood to talk about something, sometimes theyll walk over to the podium. Always microphones there. If the president wants to talk, the president can talk. Hes the president. So you ask questions that are relevant to the day in theory. You hope you might get something out of the president. The questions have been coming for President Trump on the matter of this comey memo for a while. You kind of expect, hell start tweeting about this. Theyll offer up a defense. Send out sean spicer, have a series of defenses and a competing narrative. Thats not been the case. As the president gets off the helicopter, will he answer questions . The tape is being played out right now. Shepard whatever they asked, they got a wave there, you can see. Some other people walking off there now. Reince priebus and Kellyanne Conw conway. Republican lawmakers say theyre pushing forward with their legislative agenda despite reports about President Trump. The House Oversight committee, Jason Chaffetz said the house still has to pass meaningful legislation and gets it to the president s desk. Barry laudermilk of georgia said the memos from james comey are not a distraction. He says the comey memo is not a distraction. Others say its tough to stay focused on work in congress. Shelly moore capito of West Virginia says whats going on with the president takes your eye off the ball. Mitch mcconnell said he could do with a little less drama from the white house. Alex is here from politco. Not a distraction. Thats a more interesting quote. It is. Heres the things. The crises that have enveloped the white house have threatened to knock them off stride. Hasnt it happened . It has. So many things that he wanted to move on. Healthcare has a long road to go now as well. As we enter this investigation phase, its possible none of these things are going to move until much closer to the election year. Dont forget you have the august recess that congress will be out for. As we get into the midterm year, its harder to get members of congress to think about moving these pieces there. Shepard democrats are not interested in these anyway. Why would they be of any assistance with this hanging over . A lot of democrats have been saying, were not going to do anything until you get a special prosecutor and you get the facts out of this white house. Not saying anything untoward has happened. Just they want the facts. Well, absolutely. Democrats might have been interesting in negotiating on infrastructure. Youre seeing capitol hill turn into a war zone over this. Who knows where this goes from here. But you know, theres a lot of pessimism now from republicans increasingly that much of anything is going to get done. Youre seeing republicans starting to worry about if i do go along with the president s agenda, if i do help him out on moving bills, does that come to hurt me . Its a big problem for the white house right now. Shepard that calculation is underway in every office, every Republican Office . You can bet that every House Republican right now is going to start to look at polling in their districts to see how popular President Trump is there. If President Trump has ant Approval Rating below 50 in the 30s, the 40s, that could really turn off some republicans from working them. Shepard his Approval Rating is well below 50 . Hes under water on approval. Its a big problem. You know, you didnt see took six years for george w. Bush to hit an Approval Rating as low as President Trumps is right now. It took a long time. So hes really at a historic level in terms of his unpopularity. Its quite alarming to republican strategists across the country. Shepard you look back the last 50, 60 days of this presidency, the one thing that seemed to give him a nice healthy bump in approval was the missile strikes over in syria. Is there anything else he can do now to change the subject . The narrative is well laid out. How do you change it . Its a great question. And im not totally sure what the answer is. Look, when you have a national emergency, its in times of National Emergencies that can help president s look more like leaders. Every day that goes by that this white house is consumed by crisis, it hurts the president and hurts him politically and hurts republicans as well. Shepard thanks, alex. Great to see you. Thank you. Shepard the feds confirming that the turkish president s security guards were involved in a brawl outside the countrys embassy in d. C. What we know about why the fight broke out just hours after the turkish president visited the white house. In addition, weve watched the dow. The question was will traders see bargains in there late in the situation . Will the dow have goned down so much that they get back in . We have 12 minutes left and the answer for the moment is no. Well continue to watch after this. Shepard the feds say theyre talking to turkish officials after a brawl outside of the embassy in d. C. It involved the Turkish Security staffers versus protesters. In a statement, a spokesperson said were concerned by violent incidents. Statement media in turkey called the protesters kurdish supporters of terror. The d. C. Men in black suits working for the turkish government crossed the street and attacked turn turkish protesters. Yesterday we witnessed what appeared to be a brutal attack on peaceful pro testers at the turkish residents. We just received a saying turkish officers were involved. That is from the state department spokesman, shep. Shepard what do we know with certainty about this trump erdogan meet something. Last week was trump authorized the u. S. Military to arm the kurds. That angered president erdogan. Dozens of police vehicles, as i mentioned, lined massachusetts avenue near the embassy resident last night blocking the way two Vice President pences house up the street.
