The Orange County sheriff says there is no question the boy is dead. We want to continue to search until we find the body. Hopefully that will be today, but if it has to extend beyond that, we will do that as well. Officials say the attack happened last night near disneys grand floridian resort. They say people watched in horror as the father desperately tried to save the child, but he could not stop the gator from pulling his son into the water. Search teams have been using boats, divers, sonar and helicopters to look for the childs body. Wildlife Officials Say they have captured five gators and cut them open but found no signs the animals were involved in the attack. Officials say the gator that took the boy could be up to seven feet long. The resort is just across the water if tfrom the magic congre do kingdom. There are signs that say no swimming but no signs warning of alligators in the area. The 2yearold had been playing at the edge of the lagoon in about a foot of water. Britains daily mirror newspaper reports back in april a gator from the same lagoon chased a couple and their two young kids. They all got away that time. The attack is just the latest tragedy to strike the orlando area in the past week. The city was already reeling from the deadliest mass shooting in modern u. S. History and the killing of a singer who appeared on the music competition show the voice. My heart is just absolutely breaking. This past three, four days has been horrendous on our community and then to find that a family lost their 2yearold to such a tragedy and mom and dad were there to witness this, i cant comprehend. It says quote, everyone here at Walt Disney World resort is devastated by this tragic accident. Our thoughts are with the family. We are helping the family and doing everything we can to assist local Law Enforcement. They have protectively closed now resort beaches and recreational marinas at disneyworld. The Sheriffs Office says they have cooperated with authorities. Wildlife Officials Say the parks have a great system in place for finding and removing alligators on the property, a system that worked for 45 years until last night. Since this morning we have been able to hear helicopters hovering over the seven seas lagoon, a manmade lake between some resorts and the magic kingdom. Since it is not a natural body of water, searchers have faced some unexpected hurdles. It is somewhat of a complicated operation that we have going because this is a manmade body of water. It is a sizeable body of water and it has certain systems built in the waterway. Reporter so far today, trappers have found and killed five alligators on the disneyworld property. They have looked inside the alligators. So far, no sign of the toddler. We know the father desperately tried to battle that gator. How long was he able to hang on to his son, do we know . I spoke to the sheriff after his press conference this afternoon who said that just a few seconds lapsed from the time this all started when the gator came out of nowhere, very quickly grabbed the boy and wrestled him away from his dad, who tried to hold on as best he could before that gator swam away. The dad had some scratches on his hands from the fight but cannot find his son. The family has been with counselors. We hope to find out their name this afternoon. Horrifying. Peter, thank you. Lets bring in jeff colwin, wildlife biologist and host of Ocean Mysteries on abc, which is owned by disney. Everybody is wondering how it could happen. Its incredibly tragic. Its really unthinkable that Something Like this could unfold at one of the places thats considered to be the safest place on the planet, Walt Disney World. Its an incredibly rare event. You have to keep in mind that hundreds of millions of people have visited disneyworld over 40 years, this has never happened before. Alligator attacks are incredibly rare. While they are predators, they primarily prey upon animals that are aquatic just like they are. Like turtles or fish or birds, small mammals like raccoons. This is an incredible tragedy. Unfortunately these folks were in an area where this gator, unknown to other folks, was as well. This is how all of this unfolded. I lived in south florida for about 15 years. I know that gators arent like fish, for instance. A fish in a pond is going to stay there. Gators move around. Absolutely. They are incredibly mobile. People dont realize that even though we often witness al getteget alligators in the water, they can spend many weeks on the land, especially during the dry season. They can move many miles. While this place is micromanaged, it is disneyworld, its surrounded by thousands of acres of wild habitat, swamps, estuaries, so its very natural for these animals to sort of ebb and flow in and out from one habitat to the next. The gator was said to be four feet at a main minimum, maybe seven feet. Maybe half of that would be tail. How strong could a gator like that be . This is different news. Earlier it was reported this was a small animal, midsize, maybe four or five feet. Theres a huge threshold of strength difference between a medium size gator and seven foot gator. A seven foot alligator is incredibly strong and would be impossible to manage in its element, its aquatic world. I would find it very difficult without having the appropriate equipment and help to manage a gator thats seven feet in length. A smaller gator, thats different. Of course, im talking about an expert. Yeah. We saw the video just now of a couple gators lurking with just their eyes and tip of their nose out over the surface of the water. You know from living in florida, when you would see these animals in the wild, they are amazing as predators. 95 of their body is underwater and resembles the water. The only thing above are the eyes searching for prey. They also hunt at night so its very logical that they would see something close to the waters edge and pursue it as potential prey. The great tragedy is unlike an adult human being which would be a challenge, a child is much smaller. But i have no doubt in my heart that this family did absolutely nothing wrong and they fought as hard as they could to save their precious child. Now we are waiting to find out whether federal prosecutors will charge his wife. A federal Law Enforcement source tells fox news prosecutors have put together a grand jury to investigate noor salman. That source says they are looking to charge her with murder and attempted murder and failing to warn officials about her husbands plans. We have fox team coverage. Phil keating is at the suspects home with more on the investigation of the wife. First, steve herrigan. We are hearing the gunman phoned a television station during his rampage . Reporter its remarkable, the details we are hearing of what exactly went on during this threehour rampage in which 49 people were killed. The gunman had time to make at least five phone calls during those killings. He made three calls to 911. In one of those he pledged allegiance to isis, he called an acquaintance to say goodbye and called cable station news 13 where he told a somewhat startled overnight producer im the shooter, its me, i am the shooter. He did not go on air. He simply wanted to make sure the station knew about the shooting and was covering it. We have a man determined not only to kill as many people as possible, but also to get attention for it. Theres also some new information i understand about the weapon the killer used . Reporter according to some Law Enforcement officials most of the killing was done with a rifle, a lightweight powerful rifle, weighs just about six pounds. Federal Law Enforcement sources tell fox news that prosecutors and investigators seek to charge or indict her for numerous felony crimes, including accessory to 49 counts of murder, 53 counts of attempted murder, all for knowing about her husbands massacre plan but doing absolutely nothing to stop it. However, in the past hour, the u. S. Attorney on this case will not say whether an arrest is imminent. We know a federal grand jury has been convened to hear charges in her case. What could she be looking at . Certainly accessory. We are talking about 49 counts of murder and 53 counts of attempted murder which is tremendous. So there are lots of counts, a lot of information to go through. But the grand jury has to look at number one, what did she know. Because its so interesting to me that shes never said to these investigators im going to seek spousal privilege. Anything my husband said to me is privileged, i dont need to discuss it and she can never be coerced to discuss it in a court of law. She has been helpful. Shes been extraordinarily helpful. So whats certainly what may happen down the road is there will be some proffer with the federal prosecutors to say look, i will be very cooperative but i need a guarantee that you are not going to come after me. So im going to sign an agreement and im going to be very cooperative but dont prosecute me in the process, in the mix. They are going to be very aggressive, as you can imagine. Shes described as having been, if you might call it, an oppressed wife. Her family says for instance, when her father was sick, that her husband wouldnt even allow her or didnt want to allow her to come visit him, that he was kind of keeping her under his thumb. Is that a defense . Thats a great point. Shes certainly going to say at some point, if these charges do arise, she will say i was under tremendous duress but heres the catch here. You cant have this defense of duress in these catastrophic cases and these mass murders. There isnt case law that really supports that. She would have to show that at the moment the crime was taking place, she was literally threatened by her husband. If you dont cooperate, if you dont help me, if you dont go into that disco i will kill you or kill your entire family. Thats the only conceivable way if its going to apply at all, but we know thats not true. She already admitted that she said he had left to allegedly go with friends. She wasnt with him at the night of the disco. Theres no evidence to show she had that imminent threat of bodily harm or death for her to be cooperative with her husband. Lets hope there arent any other killers out there like this guy mateen. Lets hope if there are, they have a conscience. Would there be any kind of prohibitive effect, if they see that look, you know, this guy goes out on a rampage and his wife ends up doing 15, 20, 40 years in prison, would that have the kind of effect that the prosecutors might hope for . Well, great point. Certainly. Thats one of the reasons why they are going to be so aggressive with this particular person because they are going to say we dont want copycats. We are not looking at one or two years. If she is an accessory we are talking decades. Because we are talking so many counts, multiple counts will add up. Decades. Even if she tells them everything she knows, shes already taken a lie detector test, we understand. Shes tried to be as cooperative as possible. But the prosecutor can still say, unless theres some sort of agreement. We dont know if she has a lawyer or if theres an agreement with the prosecutor, we dont know whats taking place. All we know is she is being cooperative. Frankly, if her story stays as it is, i thought my husband was going to do this, he told me he was going to be with friends, i didnt think he was going to do this, i tried to dissuade him, theres so much back and forth, at the end of the day when she goes to court and says im going to assert spousal privilege, they cant use that testimony. She wont be able to be forced to testify against herself and not going to be able to be forced to testify against her husband because of that privilege. None of that is taking place. While it is typical for people to beat up on the media, whats atypical is how much donald trump has benefited from earned media or free media, that is News Coverage of his events. Whats just so interesting is to watch him at his rallies which are often carried live on cable television, and at that very rally, sort of decrying how dishonest reporters are who are giving him the publicity to begin with. Its a very interesting relationship. I expect it will only grow more contentious as the general election wears on here. Most president s and president ial candidates have not exactly enjoyed warm relations with the press, but he seems to take it to a whole new level, calling reporters disgusting, dishonest human beings, for example. Well, he certainly is using much more colorful language than we are used to but thats the case for almost every topic. It makes sense that it would be no different when talking about the media. And you know, ironically, thats what keeps him in the news cycle, using words like disgusting and you know, at one point he called reporters a real beauty, sort of disparaging remarks like that that are guaranteed to get him headlines. It really shows that he has a mastery of keeping himself in the news cycle like almost no one we have ever seen before. It also has the effect for his fans of inoculating him from future negative press coverage down the road. Well, thats exactly right. When you think about the times that hes attacked the media, theres often been another major story of the day hes eager to see drop out of the headlines. Take, for example, when he held his press conference to talk about what he did with Charity Donations to different veterans committees. During that press conference he was highly defensive and turned in a very personal attack style way on the reporters covering the event. That in a way took away from the major story line of people asking questions about where that money went to with the veterans groups. Take for example the Washington Post. They have been quote unquote, banned from his rallies. Well, reporters from the Washington Post are still going to the rallies, still doing the good work they always do by covering him.
