Weather service, more than 50 Million People are in the path. Its already dropped several inches of snow from delware to new york, but the main storm hasnt even arrived yet. New york and new jersey declared states16 of emergency. Schools in philly sent kids home. Theyre going to be closed in new york tomorrow and here theyre warping the entire Transportation System may be shut done. Buses, subwayscommuter rails, buses, highways, freeways, all potentially out of commission. Airlines have cancelled more than 2500 flights for today alone and called off thousands more tomorrow. Forecasters say this storm could set all sorts of new snowfall records, but forecasters do say its the wind i mentioned that really makes this blizzard so dangerous. Like a hurricane really but with snow and with wind chills below zero. The National Weather service tweeted out an what it means for this to we have the city shutting down and the cold air in place. We have seen a mixture of freezing rain, sleet and all of this warm air from the south. This cold air is going to remain in place for at least a week. Blizzard warnings in the red here. One to three feet of snow. But the problem here is the blizzard conditions, 50 to 80 milesperhour gusts for a period of six to ten hours for these major cities. New yorks governor has said officials are planning to keep all traffic except for obviously emergency vehicles off every road on long island starting at 11 00 tonight. Theyre expected to announce more information about nat in just about an hour. Long island theyre getting a worst Case Scenario in long island because of the storm surge and because of the heavy winds. Long island sticks out just out to the east. The storm will just come rolling right across it. So from the hamptons and closer to the city, and queens, that whole area there is going to be dealing with very high winds, extremely high surf. Some of the predicts are up to 30foot waves. But 10 to 15 for certain. That takes out powerlines. That puts people in freezing conditions, way freezing conditions with no electricity potentially, and long island is a tough place to get into and out of when the weather is perfect. They have added 26 trains to the Long Island Railroad and also to the metro north which services westchester which connecticut and beyond. Later tonight theyre going to shut all those trains down. By 11 00 theyll stop rubbing the trains. New Jersey Transit will suspend all services a of 8 00 tonight and wont resume until thursday. So, once you get out of town, you are going to have a hard time getting back into town. Im worried about with this storm the coastal winds from all the way up there in the boston region and in maine and along long island where they are going to have power oatages and old people at home and two feet of snow, the rescue trucks cant get there. We could get lucky, but this could be awful. It could, and i think now is the time you have your preparation plan hopefully in place and youre questioning to come together with youre going to come together with your neighbors and community to help folks without power, maybe for the next several days or week. We can hope the storm isnt as bad as we have been forecasting but at this rate, somebody is going to get a jackpot of three feet. We think its new england. But long island certainly new york connecticut cape cod could get Hurricane Force winds for an extended length of time. So a lot of problems during a Long Duration of time here. I just want show you the current temperatures. The last several weeks we have had winter storms but its been too warm for the snow to stick. No problems here. Temperatures are going to remain cold and the wind chills. So overnight when well have Power Outages up and done the coast, the wind chills in some cases below zero, into the single digits. Wore at 12 right now in new york. 12 in philadelphia. Cold air is in place all snow event. Satellite radar imagery showing you the snow is playing right now in philadelphia, up towards new jersey also, long island new york city, towards boston and the storm hasnt even gotten off the coast yet. That is when were really going to see the thing crank up and the blizzard cams into effect. These are wind gusts already. Wind gusts in excess of 25 milesperhour, close to 30 in mon talk, 33, nantucket. We have several hours to go where were dealing with blizzard conditions. This is the european model forecast imagery and this shows an allsnow event for philadelphia, new york, 3 00 a. M. , boston portland, all of these areas millions of people affected. This is tuesday, around 12 00. Still an allsnow event. Philly, new york, long island, connecticut, up towards rhode island as well as massachusetts, up towards maine. This is going to be an entire snow event and a blizzard at that for the next 12 to 24 hours with wind gusts in excess of 40 to 60, even 80 milesperhour. 80 in new england. Lets talk about the snowfall thats what want to talk about. Predictions are all over the place. This time yesterday looked like we would 2010 close to three neat in new york. Now looks like somewhat south of two feet . I think 12 to 18 inches for the new york city area is probably what were going to get but were seeing a lot of snow already and some forecasters are saying an inch here two inches. We are seeing tons of snow . New york city. Snow is one of the hardest things for meteorologists to predict but this is the european forecast model. In the blue, thats six to twelve. Lighter shades. Darker shades are 12 to 18 inches for new york and long island, and then providence and boston talking about 18 to 24. I think they could get upward offed three feet here. Now, this is the forecast this is consistent with the euro. The areas here, 12 to 18, and then 18 to 24 here for eastern long island, up towards connecticut and massachusetts, and again, that bullseye for new england. Now, gfs model, what happens here . Three to six. Maybe six to twelve eight inches. So, we really have to pinpoint how much snow. I think right now, new york city, 12 to 18. Up towards boston, two feet or more. But the problem here is the wind. The sustained winds, 30, 40 milesperhour, for a period of ten to 12 hours. That is going to be the dangerous part of the storm. Janice, good to see you. The low pressure trough is going to come off the water ask thats going to push this moisture at us. So as it pushes towards us it just drops in bucketloads up the coast, and the variable here is how far does this low come off the coast . If the low cams farther off the coast the worst of the snow is along the shoreline but if the low stays closer to the big cities and the northeast, the amount of snow will be much more inland. So, that is todays problem. The problem for days ahead is this. We dont go above freezing for as long as the fox tenday forecast takes us. This is monday. Snowpocalypse tomorrow. Doesnt go above freezing until friday. On friday another snowstorm, right now predicting two to four inches. Friday night its nine. Saturday night its 12. Sunday night its 15. Monday night its four and theres another snow. Tuesday we go down to three. Wednesday, done to 12. When does it melt . And until it melts where do we put it . Ideas, anyone .
