Police department in Salt Lake City with the latest. Matt . Harris, in a matter of minutes we expect to get a substantial if not major update from the headquarters of Salt Lake City police. They say they have a person in custody in relation to this case of missing Mackenzie Lueck. Over the past couple days police have identified who they believe is a person of interest in this case, a homeowner, a man not far from here. And that home was searched. Investigators could be seen digging in the backyard, removing all types of evidence that we believe is being tested right now, even the medical examiner showed up to that property. Also a rather chilling development in this case, there was activity on missing Mackenzie Luecks instagram within the past 48 hours. Mind you, shes been missing since last monday. It is possible that activity was triggered without a person being active on her account. And this Mattress Police are still looking for the person who picked up a mattress from the suspected home where mackenzie might have ended up. Police say the person of interest might have tried to get rid of this mattress by giving it away on social media. So police are asking whoever knows where this mattress ended up to come forward. Police tell fox news this morning that there were all types of people coming out of the wyrick with alleged interactions with mackenzie or information on her back on. Police say they are accepting any and all information. They are vetting at all. There is information out there that mackenzie might have been active on some dating websites. We expect to learn much more about the latest in this case in just a matter of minutes. Harris . Harris matt finn, thank you very much. I want to bring in former fbi investigator bill daley. Bill, you and i have worked many cases together on the journalism and detective side. This note has just come with our team here at fox news, you were reading it with me. The contractor in utah has now told fox news exclusively today that the person of interest that police have identified in the search for missing university of utah student Mackenzie Lueck asked them to build a secret soundproof room with hooks on its walls in the basement of the home. The significant bill and all of this again, this is coming exclusively to fox, that basement of the home has reportedly been used as an airbnb. Learning more about the basement. But thats all we have, those details. There were reports earlier, harris, the members of said theres a number of women coming in and out of this home. This residence, for a period of time. At least that was their observation. So we dont know what else proceeded this investigation. We dont know if other people have information about this individual that would help police. But certainly this is a chilling description of what he wanted someone to build. We dont know whether he may have done something on his own as well, without a contractor. Harris we dont know that. I want to talk about the physical evidence. We can go on about the physical footprint, and the activity on her account in the last few days, even though shes been missing since june 17th. The photos we have come of the surveillance from the airport, we dont have anything physical once you got to the park that the lyft driver took her to. But enough information from that lyft driver from police to clea. Then that next driver person situation what sounds out to you in terms of physical things that are being looked at right now . Certainly, the mention that they were digging in the backyard. So the police were looking for some type of evidence they believe may have been hidden, buried. This mattress situation also is certainly something that, although it might not be an immediate connection the police need, later on harris but they are looking for it, its all over their twitter page. It should substantiate Everything Else they are looking at. I think inside the residence and we know they connect to very thorough search, and we will put aside for a second the Digital Imaging taking place but the physical expression inspectione premises, the condition of it, if there any belongings or clothing or other things that may indicate that someone other than the resident was not home, its Something Police would look at. Certainly theres enough there that has led them at this point today where theyve made an arrest. Harris if you want, bill, you can turn to that that home is up on the screen right now. Outside, theyve been digging around in the backyard. I wrote down what he said, they are looking for evidence. For nondetection. I mean, that is very specific. In terms of so they are not just looking for things that might just be in the backyard, they are looking for things that were put there recently. To unearth those things. There would be no other reason to start digging around the property coverages for the sake of kind of looking around. Thats not connected with this case. Later on they may look to discover what else is buried there, but they probably think there is some connection to what this person did, and in fact it was a suggestion that they had some type of the burn pile or probably a pet where things may have been burned. Im just going to suggest things may have been burned, buried elsewhere in the backyard. There are a number of things here, looking out the way the police may be treating this, they are looking extensively at what was happening at that house, and it digging in the backyard. Certainly, its connected with their concern that some evidence may have been secreted in the ground. Harris very interesting. When we see these things, excavation isnt always on the list. But what youre saying, i totally get it. Is there a profile . This is with the fbi does. Youve got a person of interest, which is carefully not a suspect yesterday. We still havent been able to figure out who all got arrested today, because we are getting reports it mightve been more than one person. We cant confirm that, we have to wait for the News Conference. Is there a profile that you see, this is starting to check the boxes . We can tie in with what has been suggested with regard to some of the sites harris the websites. That she may have visited. If the person was active on those sites, it would give you an indication of this person might have been attracting other individuals, by reports of other neighbors this thing they saw women going in and out of this residence. If nothing indication hes been active on social media or dating sites or some other sites, to encourage women to visit him, that certainly would be a connection and suggests that at least there is some suggestion that this person has some connection with her. Harris im going to ask you to sit tight with me. I want to bring in pat brosnan, a former wait, im being told no. Okay, its down. We are not ready for that yet, forgive me. Lets talk about this News Conference and how these things are handled, if you will. We have a News Conference about this time yesterday, we got a treasure trove of information. Thats how we found out about the box spring and mattress that they had advertised for some you to pick up, and someone did. They are trying to figure out who picked it up, where is it, is there any dna evidence, that sort of thing. Theres a picture of it there. I mentioned before that the Salt Lake CityPolice Department had this up on their twitter page, thats how far weve moved into the digital age, too. But in News Conferences sometimes you get a lot and sometimes you dont. It is their strategy and what we are seeing . I think a strategy is when you see them coming up with more information, sometimes its trying to encourage other people to provide police more details, if they are aware of whats happening. So they need need to give infon out of the public to encourage them to say, listen, you might have had contact with this person, you may have seen something. Contact us. Many times when you start to see a recoil from that, its when harris which is what we saw today. Wait until 1 30, we have nothing else to tell you when you see police confident they have a person or persons in custody and they dont need to be encouraging, that much more, giving it more information, and they didnt have to be very careful about prosecution. Because if they start giving out more information, particularly after making an arrest, and you go beyond making somebody a suspect or somebody who has been arrested and start to paint that picture differently, we see cases in the past where things fall apart and the person or persons are not guilty. And we need to be very careful not to paint that picture early on. Harris absolutely. Thats why i want to hit it again that they cleared the lyft driver early on. He was able to give them information that help them pieced together for the timeline pair thats important, too. Always a pleasure to look at these situations forensically with you. Thank you very much. Police expected to give that update any moment now on the rest in the case of missing Mackenzie Lueck. We will bring you that when it happens. Plus, 2020 democrats last night. Did you see it . Supporting Free Health Care for illegal immigrants. Does this show the party has moved too far left . Harris all right, we will move up that timeline. I said 2 15 p. M. , now its 1 15 p. M. I can tell you this, joe biden is about to make his first remarks since last nights debate in miami. The former Vice President will be speaking at the Rainbow Coalition in chicago, and whats interesting about this, you saw how tough it got on him and thed around him with a lot of the candidates on that 10candidate stage last night, the second sef democratic debates first round. Now, for the first time, we will hear back from joe biden. And a backandforth that you might remember was with senator Kamala Harris. What will he say about all of it . Keep watching, will take you there live as it happens. Meanwhile, new reaction to that fiery round of the democratic debates, ten candidates facing off in miami, attacking each other 17 times with front runner joe biden taking the brunt of it. In one of those exchanges, congressman Eric Swalwell took a dig at bidens age and suggested the former Vice President is out of touch. Joe biden was right when he said it was time to pass the torch to a new generation of americans 32 years ago. He is still bright today. If youre going to solve these issues, pass the torch. Yes, they will pay more in taxes, but less in health care. Brady mentioned the taxes we would have to pay, because of those taxes, vermont rejected medicare for all. We will thank you guys, you know what . America doesnt want to witness a food fight. They want to know how we put food on their table. [cheers and applause] harris i dont know about they dont want to witness a food fight. The kind of psalm one. Peter doocy near miami. Peter harris, Kamala Harris told me this last week she might bring up bidens comments about civility with segregationist senators, when she signed. But it never came up and the two of them shared the stage in south carolina. However, last night it did. There was a little girl in california it was part of the second class to integrate her public school. And she was bused to school every day. And that little girl was me. Thats a mischaracterization of my position across the board. I did not praise racists. That is not true. Number one. Number two, if you want to have this campaign litigated on who supports civil rights and whether i did or not, im happy to do that. Biden dealt with critics one at a time, whereas Pete Buttigieg was taking heat from all directions by democrats who think he should know more about a Deadly Police shooting where the body camera was off. Why has it taken so long . You should fire the chief. Under indiana law, this will be investigated and they will be accountability for the officer involved. But you are the mayor, you should fire the chief. The competition last week it did not some candidates apart. Six of them stayed at the shelter for unaccompanied children at the same time to call for the closure of this facility the day after they all agreed undocumented immigrants should get Government Health care and should not be targeted for deportation unless they go on a crime spree. Is there a difference, the way you see the children versus the parents . Of course i mean, in terms of they are children. They are children. You know . They are the meekest among us, and we will be judged based on how we treat the meek among us. The senators running for president all had to jet back to d. C. For a rare batch of friday votes, but most of the top tier does plan to head to the first in the nation caucus state, iowa, within the next couple days. Harris . Harris real quickly, i know some of the candidates are down but that Detention Center in texas. Actually, they are in florida visiting one today. Are we getting any news out of that . Its a lot of calls to essentially end partnerships, government partnerships, with facilities like this one where they are accusing people of having bad motives in the operations. So all those candidates came after last night to say they think this Facility Needs to be shut down. Not a lot of guidance about what exactly we would do with these children, particularly the ones that do not have family here to be reunited with, but its just about closing it down. Harris okay. Peter doocy, thank you very much. Thanks for filling in some of the notes on that. Ed rendell, former chairman of the Democratic National committee and former governor of pennsylvania, great to see you today. Did this go, and we had anticipated . Youve done this sort of thing before. That was left people across two nights. There was 21 candidates, that kennedy is going to get a lot of incoming fight. I thought it was funny call harris got a big applause when she said people dont want to see food fight. Then she started taking out the biggest fried eggs answering them. Harris [laughs] what about Eric Swalwell . Thats getting a lot of chatter today, too, about the fact that he went after joe biden on his age. And speaking of that, joe biden didnt help himself at all vexing at times to be a little from things. I will get a lot of examples, but go ahead with your reaction. I think Eric Swalwell is trying to make the case as best he can for his candidacy. But people are judged by who they are, what they believe in, and what theyve done, what they are capable of doing. Thats true for africanamericans, latinos, lgbt, the white candidates. All candidates. Old, young, middleaged. Is Pete Buttigieg too young to run . Know. We are judging people by what theyve done, what they stand for, what his plans are. So i think Eric Swalwell is way off base. Way off base. Especially considering i belong to the biggest voting bloc in the election. Harris you do. He belongs to was projected in 2020 to be the largest generation in america has ever seen. As we are seeing in some i hear you on that. They want to move on to joe biden, because theres a couple examples. All the candidates on the seder asked at one point, on day one, what would you do . Under biden said he would beat donald trump. And then Kamala Harris is coming after him. Hes having to push back, hes right in the middle of doing it, and then he wraps himself. Nobody else is even wrapping him. My time is up. Your take on how joe biden did last night . It wasnt his best performance, by any means. Harris doesnt need to be better to say a front runner . No, i think you will find that he still the frontrunner. Maybe it went down a little bit. But look, its a long way to iowa. There will be eight or ten debates. Remember, Ronald Reagan looked like a guy who had lost his intellectual balance in the first debate against walter mondale. He cured that the second debate, and as i recall he won 49 state states. So dont take one debate and necessarily right someone off. I think actually the democrat who may have done themselves the longest and deepest wound was when Kamala Harris raised her hand and said she would get rid of private insurance. Harris yeah, she had to walk that back, cleated up on the stage. That she thought it was her insurance. If you would allow me, because we are looking at this life. I dont know if you can see from where you are sitting, but thats joe biden in the center of the screen pair thats the reverend Jesse Jackson left his right shoulder. This is the Rainbow Coalition push events that joe biden is getting ready to speak. Kamala harris did land some blows on him last night about no question. Harris segregationists, and it did seem to point to the fact, are you too out of touch to talk about race and culture in 2019 versus your example of 1973 . Im paraphrasing her arguments. But these things dont pop up on your calendar. You know that youre going to the Rainbow Coalition push event the day after the debate. What does this say to you . I cant are you playing a click . I cant hear it. Harris know, the fact that we have this life picture. It hasnt happened yet. This is life, before joe biden is getting ready to speak in chicago right now at the rainbow push coalition. Hes standing with the reverend Jesse Jackson. My point with you, ed rendell, is that these things dont pop up on the counter. We knew this was on his calendar week ago. Interesting timing after the debate, particularly since senator harris went after him. Sure, but remember, when senator harris and others went after him a week ago, jim clyburn said look, i cooperated with Strom Thurmond on things that were important to me, and john lewis said Vice President bidens on civil rights is a strong as anybody. Harris Kamala Harris says she doesnt think hes a racist, that he needs to apologize or do something. I hear you. Apologize for what . He said he cooperated with them. He didnt say that he thought they were good men. He cooperated with them because he had to to get certain things past. Thats exactly what jim clyburn said about Strom Thurmond. Its exactly what john lewis said. Look, youve got to deal with he was whoever is in the legislative body were part of get things done. You cant say you ideologically hated when he disagrees with you. Then you will get anything done. Look the Vice President has got to do better, theres no question about that. But i believe he can and will. Harris so when you hear President Trump and others on the other side of the political aisle from this candidate, joe biden, say youve heard the nickname, sleepy joe biden. There were moments last night when he just wasnt quite keeping up with that moment. I know you said he needs to be better. Is this a concern, that hes lost twice running for president . That you will put all of your eggs in that basket and the basket will break again . Speak of the question is look at the field. The question is, is there another candidate who we think could do as well . Remember, joe bidens views are not only in line with the majority of democratic voters, but they are also in line with independents and some republicans, as well. So youve got to look at that. I dont think people want private insurance to totally end. I know there are tens of millions of americans harris Amy Klobuchar made that same point. It got to wrap you up. Its because shes a good candidate. Harris she wasnt in the level politics shes in yet in minnesota. Dont overlook any. Harris good to see. I have some breaking news. You are probably watching this on the rest of the nation, we are awaiting an update on the case of missing university of utah student Mackenzie Lueck. Police have taken a person into custody. We will bring you the News Conference, live, as it happens. Stay with us. Youre headed down the highway when the guy in front slams on his brakes out of nowhere. You do, too, but not in time. Harris Salt Lake City, utah, police expected to give an update any minute on the missing University Utah student, Mackenzie Lueck. Thus, after investigators have confirmed one person has been arrested in connection with her disappearance. Just a day ago, police finished up their search of a home belonging to a man they called yesterday person of interest. Dont know if that now is the person theyve arrested. We will have to see in the next moment or so. Investigators have removed a vehicle and searched for a mattress from the home, allegedly given away last week. A mattress and a box spring. Lueck was last seen in the Early Morning hours of june 17th, at the Salt Lake City international airport. Police say a lyft share ride picked her up and dropped her off to meet someone at a park at 3 00 in the morning. That lyft driver cleared, they dont know who the next driver person was. At least they are not telling us. Ted williams, a former homicide to act in washington you see, you and i often gets get on mistry like this. Overly this one has a good ending. I want to share with you something thats coming in via our website now. Its an interview that fox news has done with a man by the name of brian wolf. Hes a local contractor. He has confirmed to us that the person who owns the home reach out to him in april and asked him to build a soundproof room there. He added on other requests like building a secret door and adding hooks on the wall, according to this man. Explain how the individual and asked him to come to the home and give him an estimate for that potential project. We are getting more details, and weve got a twominute warning to the News Conference. Ted williams, your thoughts on this case . Well, apparently Law Enforcement, harris, have gotten information and evidence to connect the dots. Quite naturally, i was able also to confirm the information that you just provided about this socalled secret room and door. So itll be very interesting to find out. I hope they found this young woman alive. Harris so youve confirmed this as well. This brian wolf now has added that the person wanted them to complete the construction as soon as possible before his girlfriend got back in town. And youve confirmed this as well, this request for this padded room or quiet room . Yes, its my understanding this was an airbnb place that was being rented out, this lead for the secret room, the owners at home wanted this room. The big question right now, harris, is that the owner of that home that is under arrest . Or is it someone else . Is it more than one person of interest that may very well be under arrest at this immediate time . Harris we are told they are inside of a minute warning now until the News Conference. A lot of questions are going to come. They were excavating in the backyard of that home. They wrap that up yesterday. A previous guest, bill daley, formerly with the fbi, said like you looking for things that have been buried to become nondetectable. Request last thought before we go to that News Conference . They were looking specifically for a box spring and mattress. The neighbors had said that they had seen this individual, the person of interest, burning stuff out there. We are going to learn a lot more about what the s. W. A. T. Team did, making this arrest. On what it was based upon at this News Conference. Harris its interesting to see that. Weve got a picture of that mattress on the screen, police put that out on the 20 page. I caught that yesterday afternoon. So you are saying some of these items may not have even left the premises, even though they were asked to be picked up. We dont really know. What is key thing that you would want to know first at this News Conference . Because reporters will ask the question. Because of the first thing i want to know is how they were able to track mackenzie to a specific location, and what is this arrest based upon . What is the probable cause for the arrest that allegedly has taken place, harris . Those are significant. Harris when you say, how did they know where she went . I know there are cameras everywhere. The only pictures weve seen are inside the airport. But what i think you are going to find is that there was a digital fingerprint or footprint that a mckinsey left, and that they scrubbed her social media sites. I think that played big in the impact in determining a conclusion of an arrest in this case. Harris all right, im keeping an equal i now for any sort of movement inside that room in Salt Lake City with police. You and i will continue to look at these new facts that have come in until they begin this News Conference life which will go to them neatly. A couple of things had stuck out to me, just in interviewing chief brown. Mike brown, yesterday. I interviewed him after he had dropped the bombshell news is that mattress and box spring being advertised for pickup from that home. And we know that the basement reportedly had been used as an airbnb. So some details coming out, and during that conversation with chief brown came the conversation that he had had with luecks dad. Another News Conference begins. Ted williams, thank you. Lets watch together. Good morning. I am christina judd, the Public Relations director for the Salt Lake CityPolice Department. Thank you for being here today. We have several federal, state, and local partners here with us today who have helped and supported in this case. Special thanks are given to acting assistant special agent in charge, bob meacham, from the fbi. District attorney sam gill, commissioner of Public Safety anderson, and chief craig black of north Salt Lake City. I will now turn the time over to chief mike brown, who will be giving the statements today. Think you all for being here today. It is with heavy heart that i address you today. After an exhaustive week of investigation, we are filing charges of aggravated murder, aggravated kidnapping, obstruction of justice, and desecration of anybody in the homicide of Mackenzie Lueck. The man charged with these horrific and tragic crimes is the person of interest. I will not be saying the killers name again, but we will go through what has transpired in the last 12 days. On june 20th, 2019, the Salt Lake CityPolice Department was notified of a missing person investigation for Mackenzie Lueck. Investigations confirmed that on june 17th mackenzie departed a plane at the Salt Lake City airport at approximately 2 00 a. M. She obtained a ride via transport services to the destination of hatch park. Located in north Salt Lake City. Mackenzie was dropped off by the transport services at hatch park where another individual met with her. Mackenzie left the park with this individual at approximately 3 00 a. M. On june 17th. Investigations were conducted on mackenzies phone records, social media, and other communications, which showed that all communications ceased from mackenzie at 3 00 a. M. On june 17th. Investigations into mackenzies phone showed that the communications and data ceased at the time of june 17th at approximately 3 00 a. M. Investigators investigations ons phone showed that her last communications were with the arrested person. In interview with him, he admitted to having text conversations with mackenzie on june 16th at approximately 6 00 p. M. , but nothing after that time. The arrested person stated that he did not know what mackenzie looked like and denied having seen a photo or online profile of mackenzie, despite having several photos of her and a profile photo. The arrested person denied any personal contact with mckenzie work meeting with her at any time. Investigations of both the arrested persons and mackenzies phone records show the locations of their phones to be at hatch park, within less than a minute of each other. This was the same time as mackenzies phone stopped receiving any further data or location services. On june 17th, at approximately 3 00 a. M. In speaking with mackenzies family, members of her family, and close friends, it is highly unusual and suspect that she would not have any medications or social media activity despite multiple attempts to contact her by them, and by Law Enforcement. During a search warrant on the residence and property on june 26th, the arrested persons neighbors informed detectives that they had observed him burning something in his backyard with the use of gasoline on the dates of june 17th and june 18th. The search warrant resulted in the findings of a fresh dig area on his property, which is the same area that the arrested person was reported burning something. A forensic excavation of the burned area was conducted, which resulted in the finding of several charred items consistent with personal items of Mackenzie Lueck. Other charred material was located, which has now been forensically determined to be female human tissue. A dna profile of that human tissue was obtained during forensic testing by the utah state lab. That dna profile was compared and is consistent with the dna profile obtained through further forensic testing of personal items of Mackenzie Lueck. At 9 20 a. M. , we were able to take the suspect into custody this morning. After the arrest, i spoke with greg lueck and informed him of the developments in this investigation. This is one of the most difficult phone calls ive ever made. [voice breaking] as both greg and his wife, diana, were devastated and heartbroken by this news. [sigh] greg wanted me to say again that they are so thankful to the officers and staff of the Police Department. The community of Salt Lake City, and those across the nation than compassion and tried to help in the search of mackenzie. And i would like to echo his sentiments. I am personally grateful. We will continue to look into this situation to determine if he acted alone, or if he had help. Salt lake city is a tightknit, caring, familyoriented community, and i hope we can all Work Together to help prevent this from ever happening again. Thank you. We will not be hearing from bob meacham, the acting assistant special agent in charge of the criminal branch for the Salt Lake City field office. Thinks to the chief, first off. Again, im the acting assistant special agent in charge for the fbis salt lake division, the criminal branch. I will be very brief. First and foremost, the fbi family wants to send its sincerest condolences to the family and friends of mackenzie. Weve been assisting in this investigation and we will continue to assist in this investigation until we are done, so its completed. Our partnerships are very valuable to us with the local Law Enforcement agencies, particularly here what we did with Salt Lake City, you will see the value in it. We will continue to do that with all of our local partners, its extremely valuable to us to maintain those relationships. Its in tragedies like this where you see how important it is for us to come together as a community and continue to support one another. Thank you. We will now hear from the Salt Lake County district attorney, sam gill. Good morning. I just want to take a second. I will repeat the facts that have been articulated by chief brown, thats part of the probable cause statement. I just want to first and foremost take a second, both as the Salt Lake City d. A. Office, to give our sympathies and condolences to mackenzies family, her friends, who kept after to get engaged and bring this to a conclusion. I also want to acknowledge some of the things that you may not know, that the great effort from chief brown, we spoke about this last week personally, the effort from the Law Enforcement community, their effort, there was a lot of speculation out there. They were working very hard. Our partnership with the fbi, the state crime lab, all of them coming together in a concerted effort to try and bring some answer to this very tragic and unfortunate incident. This is the process, it now goes forward. The person is moving forward in our criminal justice process, and we will let that process unfold as it goes forward. But i want to just take a second for all the great effort, and long hours that were put in by Salt Lake City pd, all of our partners, and i also just wanted to personally thank you, chief. I know you and i talked about this at length, and what this has meant to our community. Thank you. At this time, we will have a statement from the lueck family read by mackenzies uncle. The lueck family would like to express their gratitude for the effort put forth by the Salt Lake CityPolice Departmen department. In all pertinent thing and all partnering agencies that assisted, as well as all people that provided tips on this case. They are also grateful to her community, her friends, and others around the nation who have supported this investigation. The family will not be taking any questions, and no interviews will be held. Inquiries should be directed to the Salt Lake CityPolice Department. Again, we ask that everybody respect the privacy of mackenzies family and friends at this time. Media statements for this family will be taken by the Salt Lake CityPolice Department. Thank you. The arrested person is currently on his way to be booked in the Salt Lake County jail. We will not be releasing further information, but there is still a considerable amount of investigative followup that needs to be conducted. This case will then be presented by the District Attorneys Office and move into the prosecution phase. We would like to close this press briefing with a special thanks to all the dedicated effort that was given by the women and men of the Salt Lake CityPolice Department, and the community. Thanks to the media for helping us get this word out, and we appreciate everybodys diligence on this. Thank you. Harris and with that we have learned of the death of 23yearold utah College StudentMackenzie Lueck. We heard there a Statement Read by her uncle on behalf of the family. I can only imagine what they are going through. He is asking that they be given privacy. The family will be not taking any questions or interviews at this time. Interestingly, as we learned about the details, as much as we have, about what was going on at that home and the forensic investigation that turned up personal items of Mackenzie Lueck, and human tissue. Im joined now by former fbi operative agent, bill daly is with me. He said neighbors have recently reported an acrid smell. Police describe what might have been burning in the backyard, that is consistent with that report. It is. At the time i read it, not too sure what that all means. The fact that it was burning, at the residence, it was under suspicion. It gave me great pause at that moment to think that somebody untoward, something very sad i do happen. Harris and people could smell it. Yeah. One of the things that we learned, too you got attempted murder charges against him, he saw a little bit of every piece of the case that will come forward now, from forensic to the district attorney, to the fbi evidence gathered in support of Salt Lake CityPolice Department. The police chief, mike brown, spoke the suspect name one time. He said, i will only speak it once. First of all, condolences go out to the family. This is a very sad outcome. I will tell you, its the worst outcome that police, Law Enforcement, are working toward. Theyre working to get there quickly as possible, to find them alive, and this is certainly the worstcase scenario. Harris when he joined me earlier, and you and i have done this enough over the years, unfortunately, there were some red flags for you pretty early on. There was this gap of time between june 17th at her phone just going dead, as far as police knew, at 3 00 a. M. At that park where she had been picked up, and today. What transpires in a case like that . With other red flags that had you just moment ago on the mezz with me not feeling great at that point . We certainly didnt know what the police knew regarding the digital transmissions but we now know that her phone was turned off as of 3 00 a. M. , which is the time that she met this individual at the park or around the park. And no further communications were made. There was a report yesterday, some postings on social media which appeared to come from her. Harris 48 hours ago, on her instagram. At this point we will find out who posted it. Whether the suspect was doing it as a ruse to suggest she was still alive. Harris bill daly, thank you. I want to bring back ted williams, former homicide detective in washington, d. C. We were talking before that News Conference started. Ted, what stuck out to you in terms of where the case goes now . Well, you know, harris, this is the worstcase scenario. And you and i both have children, and my heart just goes out to the family. Now the investigation really takes another step here, because they are trying to determine if there are others actually involved in this murder. But what we do know is that not only was this person murdered, but also, in order to try and get rid of the evidence, they wound up unfortunately burning parts of her. You have some excellent investigation here, but if you notice, harris, this press, they told us not only did the investigators do a good job, but the community did a good job. They also were involved in this. When you and i initially started talking, i said that the social media harris im going to step in, we got to take a quick i dont want the computer to cut us off a quick break. Everyone stay with us. Wow thats ensure max protein, with high protein and 1 gram sugar. Its a situp, banana bend at the waist im tryin keep it up. Youll get there. Whoahoahoa 30 grams of protein, and one gram of sugar. Ensure max protein. I was told to begin my aspirin regimen, blem. And i just didnt listen. Until i almost lost my life. My doctors again ordered me to take aspirin, and i do. Be sure to talk to your doctor before you begin an aspirin regimen. Listen to the doctor. Take it seriously. But allstate actually helps you drive safely. With drivewise. It lets you know when you go too fast. And brake too hard. With feedback to help you drive safer. Giving you the power to actually lower your cost. Unfortunately, it cant do anything about that. Now that you know the truth. Are you in good hands . Cant see what it is yet. Re . What is that . Thats a blazer . Thats a chevy blazer . Aww, this is dope. This thing is beautiful. I love the lights. Oh man, its got a mean face on it. It looks like a piece of candy. Look at the interior. This is nice. This is my sexy mom car. I would feel like a cool dad. Its just really chic. I love this thing. Its gorgeous. I would pull up in this in a heartbeat. I want one of these. That is sharp. The allnew chevy blazer. Speaks for itself. I dont know who they got to design this but give them a cookie and a star. Harris ted williams now joining me. He was just asking me what kind of jumped out at you in terms of connected tissue with all the information we were learning . Well, one thing that jumped out at me more than anything el was the speed in which Law Enforcement was able to develop this case. And i think bill will tell you, those phone records were instrumental in making this arrest. They were able to marry up her phone records with the suspects phone records, and that made all the difference in the world. What do you think, bill . Yeah, i think thats right. That was the connectivity. From there they were able to dig further into the forensic evidence. I would compliment the police not just for their timeliness, but their resources. They brought dogs in on this, cadaver dogs or dogs who can smell out any trace that someones belongings. Forensic examination. It was a full force with all the intent, im sure, with everyone hopefully to find her alive. Harris im reading about that using the shovels and the dogs in the search of the home. Yesterday they wrapped that up so quickly. You mentioned, bill, about that acrid smell. Ted, you talked about, theres only one like it. The neighbors ended up being huge proponents in helping figure out where mackenzie was. Youre right. Someone burning something in a back yard, thats normal and natural. People do it all the time. But the smell of death, if youve been in homicide, like bill and i have been around the smell of death, especially the smell of a burning body, its a different odor. Im sure that stood out with the neighbors. Harris in terms of solving this case, it felt like an eternity, 11 days. But you both say it really wasnt. Bill . Not with the Little Information they had to go on. First the report and then giving a day or so for some people, they go off the grid for whatever reason. By the time police got involved, there was very Little Information. To me it moved extremely quickly to this point. Its very sad outcome. With all the resources we said from the state, federal county level, all very professional up to the point of this News Conference. Extremely professional behavior. Harris im sure in the days to come we will learn more about certain social activity that Mackenzie Lueck might have been engaged in and those sites that have been reported. I dont want to lean into that conversation until we hear which ones. But we are hearing a consistent sort of thing where maybe some of her closest friends, whom i have interviewed on this program, may not have known all the things that were going on with her. You start to get wider. They were talking to those friends, too. Youre absolutely right. Thats what the authorities did not give us today. How did mackenzie know this person . How did mackenzie have his phone number . How did he have her phone number . Those are things were gently going into. I have a lot more information, but i cannot share it right now. I think its better for it to come out over a period of time. Harris i hear you, because it doesnt help anybody. I just want to say this real quickly. That lyft drive turned out to be a witness in this case. At first this was all about she got picked up with share ride. He, whomever he is, as a person, had to be paying attention. Its in the middle of the night. According to police, we learned enough from him to know somebody else had picked her up. Exactly. To teds point, well find out more about how they shared information. But for someone to meet someone at 3 00 a. M. , obviously it was some other plan afoot here. It wasnt like she was waiting for the morning to meet him. I would say, harris, to your point earlier. They are still looking for other pieces of evidence. Harris potentially other people. Thats what the police chief said. Also the mattress from the home. This case is not over, as ted and i well know. Now we get into the prosecution stage. Even though theres some circumstantial evidence, other piece of forensic evidence, they need to tie as much as they can together. This will continue to go on. The case is not over. Harris ted, what stood out to me, too, from the police chief, neighbors observed the hours of june 17 and 18th. Basically right after she went off the grid with her phone, the burning smell. Absolutely. We always say if you see something, say something. These neighbors here were very vigilant. I think we should take our hats off to them, harris. Harris ted williams and bill daily, thank you very much. I appreciate your time as this story unfolded, unfortunately, not the way anybody anticipated. To greg lueck, who police told me, that was the hardest phone call he ever had to make. Thoughts and prayers to all of you. Mackenzie lueck found. She is not alive. The Daily Briefing now. Dana hello, everyone. This is the Daily Briefing.
