Will leave some democrats are coming to their side. We have also seen some of the other members of leadership on the democratic side begin to break ranks. Speaker pelosi has continued to use the terminology immoral. How offensive is that . Im getting weary of those who are saying that Speaker Pelosi is only trying to appease the very hard radical left. She is the radical left. The most extremist of this whole negotiating process areas republicans have been trying to move to find some middle ground, but she is refusing to allow us to move forward. Melissa chief White House Correspondent john roberts has more from the north lawn. John . Melissa, good afternoon to you. A lot of fingerpointing and harsh rhetoric back and forth, and still the government remains shut down for the 31st day today. The president , over the weekend, lashing out at democrats after they refused out of the box the offer that he made late on saturday afternoon. The president tweeting, nancy pelosi and some democrats turned off my offer yesterday before even got up to speak. They dont seem time crime and drugs, they do see 2020 prethey should do the right thing for the country and allow people to go back to work. He cap set off with a treat this morning saying, democrats working within washington and getting things done. How is that working out . 2020takebackthehouse. The president had to quickly add over the weekend adding three years of protection for dreamers is not amnesty, that there is no path to citizenship. Vice president mike pence was handed that baton yesterday. On fox news scented dome i spent a great listener. There is no amnesty, no pathway to citizenship. There is no permanent status here at all. Which is what amnesty contemplates. What this is its a good faith effort to address relief to Daca Recipients. They proposed the bridge act, a three year reprieve which could be renewable. The president has embraced three years of temporary relief. But democrats rejected the offer is a nonstarter. Heres James Clyburn of South Carolina. We are all for negotiating. We would love to have a permanent fix for daca and tps, and that he wants a permanent wall. I think its a nonstarter for him to ask for a permanent wall and for us to have a temporary fix. Here is something, melissa, that neither side is talking about. The president wants to build with that 5. 7 billion about 17. Because of an agreement with mexico, that barrier cannot be builds in the floodplain of the rio grande, which means you cannot build it right along the border. It has to be built on land. Along the river, much of the area where the wall is there will be large tracts of land that is, in essence, american soil. So the barrier will be well back off the river, which means that the barrier may aid in stopping or holding up or funneling through two different areas where they could be interdicted. People smuggling drugs and people engaging in human trafficking. People who dont want to get caught. For all of those thousands of family units and unaccompanied children who simply want to set foot on u. S. Soil and then surrender to the border patrol, that type of barrier in texas likely wont do much to stop that sort of crossborder traffic. Harris melissa question marks be one interesting point. John roberts, think of it. For more were doing but i dan kelty of michigan who sits on the House Financial Services committee. Sir, what do you think of the fact of the president put off from the table he heard a member of your own partys it was a nonstarter, but then go on to say what he wanted instead. Do you think thats the way it could go about it . To sit down and say, you have offered us this parable who wanted said is this. What do you step back and still refused to negotiate . We dont refuse to negotiate. I dont know where that idea comes from. What we refused to do is let the president negotiate both sides of this agreement and then present it to us. Now, look at, i am very open to a negotiation. The legislative process is the process of negotiation. What i object to and i think most American People object to is that, during the course of this discussion, the government is being used. The families of people who work for government are being used, essentially as ponds. Worst case, hostages in this debate. Open the government. We should open the government. And then have a robust debate. Thats fine, thats how we do things. Thats the way government works. Melissa so your response to this is you dont want to sit down and negotiate with him on this particular deal unless the government is open first. Open the government. This is ridiculous. Think about it. This is ridiculous, that the president decided melissa but hes offering you what you want on the side of daca. Do you think that dreamers come as they watched esco yes, he is. Hes sitting there and saying that he would offer 3year reprieve. Why dont you demand something else, then . If you dont like what hes offering on dreamers, respond and demand something else. Two things first of all, as i said, you dont go through this complex negotiation about immigration policy with one party essentially holding a hostage government. Lets open government and we can have this debate. Secondly, thats not what we are asking for. I think we are in a better position of articulating to whe think we would like to see as policy than the president. We know that we need melissa tell me what it is paid what is it that you want . We need smart Border Security. Not a seventh century wall. You are reporting just because before he came on the air points out the fallacy. Melissa what do you want on immigration . We want our brands of immigration reform. Melissa what does that mean . It starts with a permanent solution for dreamers. Not just to kick the can down the road, which is what the president suggested. The fact of these people are facing deportation melissa hang on one second. He said permanent because, in fact, the president to eat earlier today that he does want to have a permanent solution as part of a larger immigration discussion. You guys are right in lock step on that. I know that would be surprising to hear. So if you give you that, would you fund more Border Security . We are already willing to fund more Border Security. We keep offering more money for Border Security, just not exactly what the president wants. Think about what he put in has offered. He went from coming down melissa miss pelosi said if you let me finish, i could tell you. Pardon me . Melissa nancy pelosi said not one more dollar, and you are saying you guys are offering. She has already offered significantly more than that. You want to hang on to what rhetorical point that was made . The truth is, we have offered over a billion dollars just recently for additional Border Security measures that are based on what experts say. Not on what the president says while chanting at a rally, but what Real Security experts say. Thats what we want to do. The main point of all this, which is completely obfuscated and all of this we can have an honest debate about how we get this done. Thats fine. But why do we have to have 800,000 people working without pay in order for the president to have additional leverage to get something that he is not willing to submit to the normal process of legislation . Thats the only point. We can have all sorts of differences. Melissa can i just got you one question about that . I think the problem is that, in the past, when there hasnt been some looming deadline or something big, that politicians in washington on both sides have gone back and have not crafted comprehensive immigration reform. We all, as they emerge in public, have been waiting for you guys to do that for decades. We see that frustration. Its like without something thats about to explode in front of you, we dont trust all you guys to sit down and get it done. I will give you the last word. Go ahead, tell me why im wrong. I just think that is dead wrong and that is a terrible, terrible way to run a government. We can get this done. We can sit across the table and work this out. It makes it less likely that we get it done when one party, one president , decides to use the threat to the American Economy in forcing 800,000 people to work without pay in order to get there. That doesnt help get it done, it makes it more difficult. Melissa i hear you, sir. Thank you for coming out today. We appreciate your time and your perspective. Thank you thank you. Melissa in the meantime, President Trump responding to House SpeakerNancy Pelosis call to postpone the seat of the union address, tweeting, nancy, im still thinking about the state of the union speech. There are so many options, including doing it as per your written offer made during the shutdown. Security is no problem. And my written acceptance. While a contract is a contract, i will get back to you soon. Pelosi says the address shouldnt happen while the federal government is closed. She requested it be rescheduled or submitted in writing due to security concerns. Now, he fox news alert. New fallout over the nowdisputed bus for you to report that President Trump told his former attorney, Michael Cohen, to lie to congres about his trump tower deal in moscow. Muellers office issuing a rare rebuke, calling the report inaccurate. But one of the reporters behind the piece remains defiant. Watch. I have further confirmation that this is right. We are being told to stand our ground. Our reporting is going to be accurate, and we are 100 behind it. The same sources that were used for the next story are standing behind it, as are we. Melissa s chief intelligence correspond to catherine herridges live in washington with more. How do you sort through all this . Think you, melissa, and good afternoon. Buzzfeed is standing behind its reporting based on two unnamed Law Enforcement sources after Robert Mueller issued a Public Statement disputing allegations paid the special counsel investigators have evidence the president told Michael Cohen to lie to congress. Buzz feeds description of specific statements to the special counsels office and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office regarding Michael Cohens congressional testimony are not accurate. That statement is consistent with the court records, part of Michael Cohens guilty plea that states, cohen said he lied to congress about a moscow real estate projects in 2016 for the benefit of donald trump, but not at his direction. The bus peter portis dissected the special counsel statement this weekend, saying, it was not a fullthroated denial of their reporting. We are really keen to learn we want clarity from the special counsels office, and we want to learn about the construction of that statement. Who was involved, when, how, where, why. In a tweet, the president reminded his followers that it was buds feed that released the totally discredited dossier released by the Clinton Campaign and the dnc, in which the public records show the unverified dossier helped secure a loan of their intelligence and surveillance warrant for a Trump Campaign aide. With the president s lawyer Rudy Giuliani putting Michael Cohen, who is an admitted liar now, under further scrutiny on the sunday shows. As far as i know, President Trump did not have discussions with him. He certainly had no discussions with him in which he told him or counseled him to live. If you can figure out where Michael Cohen is telling the truth, youre better than i am. Meantime, the ranking democrat on the house intelligence committee, adam schiff, said he was still call cohen to testify and seemed to distance himself from the buzzfeed report saying the Biggest Issue is why cohen apparently lied to congress and the first place. Congress has a fundamental interest in two things. First, and getting to the bottom of why he came before us and lied. And who else was knowledgeable that this was a lie. The republican who played a central role in the house rush investigation said timing matters. Congressman John Ratcliffe said the special counsel went public, but the buzzfeed report two days after the nominee for attorney general, william barr, said he will cast a critical eye on the special counsel investigation and its findings, melissa. Melissa catherine herridge, think you as always for great reporting prayed lets bring in tom bevan, cofounder and publisher of real clear politics. Let me get down to first of all what buzzfeed is trying to parse here. This is with the special counsel said. They said the characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office regarding Michael Cohens congressional testimony are not accurate. Is their wiggle room in there for buzzfeeds story to still be true . Well, its unclear. There was a report in the Washington Post that said, look at, when this report came out, they went back and went through every piece of evidence they have trying to find something that can be construed to say that trump had told Michael Cohen to lie to congress. They could not find it. Buzzfeed is standing by their story, so, obviously, they are in a sort of existential credibility crisis here with the special counsel. I think time will tell whether how much of the story was true, whether it was just parts or if there was some semantic difference there. Which they are standing behind, which the special counsel is disputing. We just dont know and we wont know until the special counsel releases the report. They said there were specific documents, whether its emails or texts, the president said specifically directing Michael Cohen to take this action. Really big deal. Put it out there, but then this sort of pull back on it. And mueller coming out and saying thats not the case. It happened later in the evening on friday. I talked to people over the weekend who didnt even know that it had been retracted or walked back at that point. Or contradicted, may be, is the right term. Contradicted by the miller team. As of the danger with this kind of thing . That the initial story makes all kinds of waves, and once its out there, its very hard even when you have somebody coming out and sing its not true, to then bring it back. Absolutely. This is not the first time this has happened, specifically regarding the rush investigation. Media outlets have been out over their skis reporting things that are not true or partially true or just flatout wrong. This has happened a number of times over the last couple years. The media never seems to learn its lesson, and here we have a situation where the breathlessness, the hysteria with which this report was greeted by the press on the day that it was released was just over the top. And yet, none of the other news organizations could corroborate it. But it still took 12 or 15 hours for it to get shot down, and even now there are still folks, because buzz we do standing behind it, there are folks suggesting that this is still true. Its just unfortunate, but it is the way that the media has operated, i think, just over the last couple of years. It is really, i think, unfair to the public for sure. Because we dont know what to believe and what not to believe. Thats why the medias credibility is so in the tank. Melissa i was struck by how unusual it is for the special counsel to come out and make a statement. They have run a tight ship, i think almost everybody has said, as far as we know. It seems like theyre really keeping leaks down to a minimum. How unusual is it that they would come out and make a statement . What does that tell you about obviously, buzzfeed had some sort. What does that tell you about who they were maybe talking to . With your own intuition of being a report to yourself, what do you think happened here . Its a very rare step. It hasnt happened with the special counsel, for sure, in the last two years. They are typically very mom, they will not comment on any reports. Even reports that in the past have been shown to be wrong, partially wrong, fully wrong, whatever, special counsel hasnt. This was the exterminator. If it fits were buzzfeed, their other discrepancies on the buzzfeed side that they have not been able to explain in a fashion that is acceptable yet, about how one report said they hadnt seen documents and the other said they had. In this credibility battle, i think the special counsel, and the fact that they should that statement puts buzzfeed and a really bad position in terms of their credibility. Melissa tom bevan, cofounder and publisher of real clear politics. Thank you for coming on. You but, melissa. Thank you. Melissa the 2020 race continues to heat up as another democratic hopeful makes it official today. California senator Kamala Harris announcing that she is running for president. She is the first africanamerican to enter the race so far. We are watching a highstakes showdown overseas as british Prime Minister theresa may is revealing her plan b for brexit ahead of a deadline in march for the country about stress withdrawal from the European Union. Mays previous brexit plan was overwhelmingly rejected in Parliament Last week. Greg palkot is live in london with the latest. Greg . Hi, melissa. It was yet another show done in the u. K. Parliament house of commons, as you noted after a very stunning defeat for u. K. Prime minister theresa may and her plan to get britain to exit the European Union, or brexit. She was back for more punishment. Heres how she let off today. Take a look. Turning to brexit, following last week so it is clear that the governments approach had to change. And it has. Still, if politicians were hoping for a plan b from the Prime Minister, they didnt get it. It sounded a lot like a plan a. She did promise to listen more to members of parliament, as she formulated yet another approach. She also did say that she would, in fact, tweak or plan a little further to make sure there was a clean exit from the European Union ransom had been fearing. At the same time she spent a lot of the time, melissa, during the session mocking her critics. Especially Opposition Leader jeremy corbin, who refused to sit down with her and talk with her over the past couple days. Sound familiar . As well as she laid out her timetable for the next couple of weeks. But she seems to be playing for time. This is stretching out a little bit more toward that deadline. Remember, the deadline is march 29th to wrap everything u up. Again, next tuesday, it looks like an important day. Theres going to be a whole bunch more votes. After that, a looming over everything, the threat of another noconfidence vote like we saw last week. Which could, if it succeeded, lead to another election. A lot of people are pushing for a second referendum on this. A lot of people are fearing a new deal exit, or a crash. Theres a lot of questions that have not been resolved, and were not resolved by todays presentation by theresa may. She was requested formally by the parliament to spell out exactly what she had planned with the u. K. Being a very important global ally. Not just for the European Union, but for the United States. A lot of people were hoping fix things will smooth out there. No indication of that city. Back to you. Melissa good luck with that. Greg palkot, thank you very much. For more on all of this, lets bring in nile gardiner. Hes in the market margaret thr center for treatment. Think of you joining us. What is it about her plan that lawmakers in her country hate so much . I think for the conservatives who are opposed to theresa mays deal, the main problem with the deal is that it will keep britain indefinitely tied to the e. U. Customs union, which means that britain will not be able to sign its own freetrade agreements. Thats the biggest factor which is weakening support for her deal with in the conservative party. The labour party, the opposition party, opposes the deal for different reasons. Not least because many in the labour party opposed brexit altogether. I think its very unlikely that theresa may is going to be able to get a revised e. U. Withdrawal deal through parliament next week, as she is planning to do. After all, the European Union itself and the european commission, the executive branch of the e. U. , has strongly opposed any revisions of the e. U. Withdrawal deal. We are definitely heading toward a Nodeal Brexit on march 29th, which actually would be the best outcome in my view with regard to the current situation. Melissa can you tell us real quick because we only have a couple minutes left, what does that mean if they do the hard break . If they crash out . They make it sound so dangerous. What does it really mean, logistically . There is nothing really to fear from a Nodeal Brexit. It means that britain deals with the u. S. And the rest of the world under wto rules. And britain would be able to sign a freetrade agreement with the United States, which would be a hugely important deal between the Worlds Largest interest largest economies. I think there is a great deal to benefit from a no deal scenario. Melissa im sorry to cut you short, but we have to go back to Kamala Harris who is speaking right now. Here she is, she has announced that she is throwing her hat into the ring for president in 2020. Lets listen. Do have any words of encouragement or policy plans that could help absolutely, and thank you. I read to the hilltop every day when i was a student here. Its an incredible piece of journalism, and thank you for being there. There is no question, you are absolutely right. Student loan debt is one of the Biggest Challenges facing our country and facing our students. I have met so many students who have talked with me about the bird and that they carry that is not only financial but its emotional. It is a burden of wondering whether they should actually complete an education and have a dream about what they may able to do professionally. At the very moment, they cant pay the rent if they have to pay off the student loans. Its a number of things. In one, i believe what we have to do is also have a commitment to what we need to do around debtfree college and college for all. The other is what we need to do around changing the system in such a way that students can refinance their debt, and currently we dont have such a system. Another is, frankly, the work that i did even as attorney general. Which is that we also have to go after predatory and particularly forprofit colleges that have been peddling this information to students, getting them to pay a lot of money and go in debt without a degree that allows them to get any kind of employment. There are a number of issues. To your point, it is one of the most challenging issues facing our country and a lot more attention has to be given to it. I intend to do that. Reporter thank you for doing this. Im curious, when you look back on your record as prosecutor in california, are there particular decisions you made or your office made that you either regret or would do differently, knowing what you know now . Sure. Yeah, i can tell you of cases where i really regret that we were not able to charge somebody that i knew molested a child but the evidence wasnt there. There are cases, as i mentioned earlier, where there were folks who made a decision in my office and had not consulted with me and i wish they had. Again, i take full response building for those decisions. I will also say that there is a lot of what i did as a prosecutor that im proud of, including a recognition that there are fundamental flaws in the criminal Justice System and that this system needs to be reformed. Which is why when i was District Attorney i created one of the first reentry initiatives of any Prosecutors Office in the United States. This was a long time ago. Thankfully, at this point, this is the way that things are done and people understand thats how a prosecutor should think about their work. Which is, lets be smart on crime, as ive said, instead of melissa that was a little bit of senator Kamala Harris from california talking bear at Howard University about her points of view as she throws hea potential democratic contender for president in 2020. In the meantime, on this date, 31 of the Government Shutdown key democrat is seeing hope open though the president s offer to compromise. Are we any closer to a deal . Our power panel, coming up. This, despite the fact that democrats have rejected it. Moderate democrat joe manchin seems to be looking at the president s offer as a good sign. The senator tweeting, im hopeful that the president s statement tonight will allow us to immediately reopen the government, put West Virginians back to work, and start negotiating longterm immigration reform. I look forward to working with my g. O. P. And democratic colleagues to make this happen so that we can end this shameful shutdown. That kind of works, shameful shutdown. [laughs] time now for our power panel. And the initiation come was a senior aide to former senator john kerry. Beverly hallberg is president of the District Media group and a host of a podcast. Thanks to both of you for joining us. Roger, let me start with you. Put an offer on the table, and say, i will protect dreamers for a couple more years. Does that then become, to the viewing audience, that its a battle between a and b those employees on the sidelines right now and the dreamers . Does it change kind of the dynamic, if you are saying, no, we wont talk about dreamers until federal workers are back to work . Which is what we have heard one lawmaker say earlier on the show today. Is that a danger . Well, what was interesting to me as he is offering something that he himself cannot necessarily just turn around and deliver. Like in a turnkey kind of way. The changing of the status of da recipients we need to be worked out legislative appearance of the dog comes around by its this one. I dont understand why he presented this way. Also, instead of having a conversation with the democratic leaders, he just basically presented both sides. Here are the wins for the democrat, heres a wins for my administration. Melissa in fairness, he tried to have a conversation. Hes been trying to get them to the table, and it seems like this was kind of the only way. Its like saying, heres what i want to talk to you about. If you want to talk about something sort of like this, come over and visit and lets talk. Because we dont have a counter offer at this point. Its not that they are coming back to the table and ask you to negotiate. I think this is been a very strong move by the president for this reason. The reason why i think Mitch Mcconnell is moving forward with the vote recovers of whether or not he gets the votes. And thats because becomes a democrat shutdown if they dont move the needle at all. Lets not forget, democrats many of them who are senators actually supported Border Security before they are now against it. Many of their constituents want Border Security, even if they are not a fan of donald trump personally. I think this puts democrats in a bad place if they dont even come to the table with anything. Melissa if you wanted to solve this and it wasnt about boring political points because i dont know how it becomes a democratic shutdown at this point. It seems like it is set in stone that the president said he would own it, hes owning it. I dont know that you can change that at this point. But if you wanted to have a solution as opposed to a political fight, what would you ask for . A temporary fix on dreamers isnt enough . What do you think is that fair trade for this initial money on Border Security western mark 5 billion, and protect the mueller investigation. One piece of legislation, a total game changer, it would rearrange the entire playing field. Its imaginative, its a creative. I would go through Something Like that. Any kind of incrementalism in this current landscape is not going to do it. Yes, he has reach out to democrats come up with the most recent roundabout of those conversations he reached out to blue dog democrats trying to create a schism between leadership and members. So there was a machiavelli and kind of motivation behind that. It wasnt just good faith bipartisanship. Melissa i dont know if its machiavelli and as much as as you said, he is offering things that republicans dont like. If you want to make a deal you have to give in order to get. You could put things on the table that there are something for each side to love and something for each side to hate. What do you think of his very creative idea, though, about protecting mueller and putting that out . Taking it away from daca or whatever else . What you think about that . I would be up for it. I think thats a discussion i think the investigation should move forward. When it comes to republicans, this is an uphill battle for them. The House Freedom caucus, they are not happy but whats being said about daca. So he is giving democrat something. I think there is room to move on the amount of money, the president cant get away from the law. Theres a bill in front of him that passed unanimously in the senate. He was forward a month ago before ann coulter giant mike chimed in, and that he wasnt for it. Melissa the white house marking President Trumps first two years in office by touting his accomplishments. Has President Trump lived up to his campaign promises, and what does he need to do to secure reelection in 2020 . Our power panel is back after the break. The white house touting his accomplishments, including rolling back regulations, negotiating new trade deals, and working to secure our southern border. Democrats say their policies are hurting the country. We are back with our power panel. Roger fisk, and beverly hallberg. Beverly, i will start with you. It does seem like its two years with something for everybody in the sense that for people who like the president , they feel like they have seen a lot. And for people who dont like the president , there is a ton to rail against. Its been all things all people, no . Very busy for the media field, as will pay lots to cover. When it comes to President Trump, i travel around the country and i like to ask people who they would vote for if theyre willing to tell me. I asked this question, would you vote for him again . When they say they voted for him. Ive yet to meet a person who says they wouldnt vote for him again, even if the only reason was because they couldnt vote for hillary clinton. I think many republicans and independents dont always like his style, or his rhetoric. I think people are positive about tax cuts, rolling back regulation, Supreme Court, the Supreme Court nominees that have been confirmed, two of those. Thats huge for people. And all the federal judges. I think theres a lot of people ask truly happy about, even if they are not crazy about how he talks the time. Melissa roger . I think there is no moral or policy core to this whole team. There is no binding harmonic vision of where he wants to bring the country. The three most important things in the world for donald trump are yesterday, today, and tomorrow. There is no thinking about 2, 3. Frankly, im overwhelmed undery some of the things listed as his compliments. I think eric trump could be sitting in the oval office and tax cuts and core such and kavanaugh and tax cuts for the wealthy with your past. If you cant do that, you are in the wrong business. The deregulation stuff that everybody says his jobregulating will come back to haunt them. Mining companies now in West Virginia and kentucky can dump mining runoff back to rivers and streams. Five years from now, with the oncology wards of West Virginia and kentucky are full of little kids with cancer, this will be one of the causes. The Obama Administration put in protections for active military and credit protections from predatory lenders. Those have been removed. Its open season now for the payday lenders on our active military. Finally, because everybody wanted this to increase jobs, you can hunt hibernating bear cubs. So that was another piece of deregulation that came along. Thats the record melissa kids have cancer and bear cubs are in jeopardy. Thats what you put out there. I would say that wages are up, and employment is down, people are happy with the economy. Republicans need to move forward, not to trump. It comes down to debt. Thats one area where they looked a lot like democrats in the last couple years. Melissa too much spending. We got to go. Good step.
