When you talk about someone inside trumps inner circle as hope hicks. What impact does this have. It obviously has a big impact. She had the salute trust of the put of the united states. And i think by all accounts was one of the few people within the administration who had the ability to provide complete candor to the president. And influence his decisions one way or another. So there is a loss on that. But, you know, i have come long enough in government to find out that there is no totally irreplaceable staff, right in the irreplaceable member here is always the president or the principle. So they will get through it. But there is no question its a big loss. Harris you know i was looking at the list last hour on outnumbered. We were ticking down hot people who have been in that seat. Anthony scaramucci, showers, so on and so forth. First of all she was the first woman in that job with all of those men behind her. And so it kind of fulfilled the circle to around the president. He has a lot of strong women around him. He does have a lot of strong. He continues to have. You just heard from Kellyanne Conway who ran his campaign obviously continues to play a Critical Role over there. You know, the one thing i think we are discounting here with the case of hope hicks is how difficult her job was made by the constant attention that was provided to her. If he would being honest with ourselves. If she was a 50yearold fat guy the media wouldnt follow her around at dinner. Harris oh my gosh. They probably wouldnt ask questions about her personal life. What we have seen here with her case in particular, is a double standard that was set in undue level of attention deeply unfair. That i think, you know, look, if somebody wanted to serve all 8 years, probably wouldnt be possible given the amount of attention she was given on a daytoday basis. Harris we havent seen that with anybody. No. Thats kind of the point nobody is asking harris all of the gender stuff that you have mentioned has anything to do with whether or not she would have stayed in the job longer. We havent seen that in anybody all 8 years. I want to talk about the job specifically though. This is a president who does like to walk outside the boundaries of a communications maybe system or plan in place. She had and politico calls her a trump translator. But she had the ability to fav gait that. Very successfully and very quietly. We didnt see her come up in front of cameras and have to defend or do any of that. To her great credit. She was very comfortable playing the behind the scenes role. Never sought the spotlight herself and wanted to get the job done. If you hear for most journalists in your account how she processed their inquiries on a daytoday basis. She was extremely professional and served the president well and got her job done. Can you contrast that with way people from previous administrations and this administration have handled the spotlight. I have think she has handled it as well as can you. Harris i want to ask a pointed question. You were chief of staff for senator mitch mcconnell. He is kind of tough. You had a tough boss. But, when you hear somebody say that they told white lies or, you know, felt like they needed to for somebody that is in leadership, what does that make you think of . Well, you have got to remember this is a one sided conversation. Benefit of defending yourself, right . So what the context of that is entirely up to whoever provided it to the media. And so you know, the question, my guess is probably pertained to whether or not she mislead people with respect to the investigation on russia and the answer was absolutely not. Now, are there issues that you come into contact with during the course of doing your job that in retrospect you find out you didnt have all the facts at the time . Sure. And that could very well be the context here. Harris i wants to end up as i said right where john roberts reporting did and thats on Jared Kushners Company Reportedly getting millions of dollars after someone met at the white house for meetings. That Umbrella Company giving that money reportedly. Your thoughts . Well, the missing connection in the story itself, we have a series of facts. Youve got facts that the Kushner Companies received loans and have you got a series of facts that Jared Kushner had meetings in the white house with people who provided them. Now, a simple reality is that varied kushner has probably had meetings with just about every single significant financial and otherwise person in the white house during the course of just doing his job. So, what you have to prove here, in order to prove something nefarious is that he was conducting business in those meetings. There is absolutely no facts to support that in that New York Times piece. Where there is facts are that he separated himself from his business at the beginning of his service in the white house. And i think, look, as long as we dont have any facts that dispute that, have you got to take him at his word. Harris josh holmes, thank you very much. Chris, i want to start with the leaks that came out of a session that was supposed to be private secret with hope hicks. You heard josh holmes talking about it. Why are we seeing this . Well, you know, thats almost a rhetorical question because people are trying to score political points. This was clearly an effort byself the democrats in their closed session of the House Intelligence Committee, wanted to embarrass hope hicks and indirectly thereby to embarrass the president. And according to pete king, was a member of the House Intelligence Committee, he said that this has been completely misportrayed. Yet the democrats are asking questions about have you ever mislead anybody, and she is well i have told white lies, i suppose. But i have never said anything in terms of the russia investigation that wasnt entirely the truth. And its subsequently been explained that, for instance, if the president didnt want to meet with somebody instead of saying well, the president doesnt wants to meet with you, she would say he is too busy. Almost like when your wife asks does this dress make me look fat you never answer. Lorain, i promise you the dress does not make you look fat. Harris this show just took a cart wheel. Exactly. Harris sorry lorain. And, look, honestly this is a president who hasnt always been bothered by the facts. I mean, remember, day one of his administration when he sent somebody out to say that it was the biggest crowd that had ever been there for an inauguration. I dont think the white lie thing im not saying that the president wasnt annoyed that she said it but i dont think that was a big factor in this. Harris getting that and i appreciate you bringing that forth from pete king, representative peter king. Because getting the context and the tone is really important here. And so the question becomes why would democrats, if they are trying to make a political play with this. Ever think that anybody would ever tell them the truth again . Because left out of context its just that lets move on. Lets talk a little bit if we can about where jiewrd couricner this has been an interesting week. You saw downgraded in the security clearance and now a deeper dive into finances for his company. I think the real key here and, you are missing one other point, which was the leak in the Washington Post this week, in addition to the two stories you mentioned. There was a leak in the the Washington Post that intelligence sources said that they had intercepted communications in which other countries, china and mexico and the United Arab Emirates had felt that they could manipulate Jared Kushner because of his financial ties and because they felt that he was unsophisticated in a lot of these Foreign Policy issues. Whats clear to me in all of this are that the long knives are out for Jared Kushner. Whether and in fact some people have suggested its in the intelligence community. Some people have suggested that there is no love loss between Jared Kushner and the white house chief of staff john kelly. Im not sure where these leaks are coming from. But they are a series of leaks that are mental to diminish Jared Kushner and to weaken his position in the white house. And i think to some degree to try to force him to decide, you know, its almost easier to be on the outside than it is to be a member of this white house staff. Harris Chris Wallace are we at a point now where we need to figure out where the leaks are coming from in remember in the early days of the administration they were potentially coming out of the white house and arent the white house. This is seriously going to be a situation where things just leak and they are this onesided and potentially damaging, dont we need to know the whole story . And so lets just find the leakers. Well, i would certainly like to find the leakers. It would be a heck of a news story. Harris yeah. It would be a public service. I mean, having said that anybody who has been around washington for a long time, harris, knows its almost impossible to find the leakers. Leakers are smart. They you have people in the media who want the information. And dont wants to give up their sources. And, lord knows, we have done that, too. You have gotten leaks. I have gotten leaks. I dont give up my sources because you want people to continue to talk to you. And the result is very, very seldom do we ever find out who these leaks are coming from. Its clear that there is a series of leaks and does it make it harder for people to just do their business in this town . Absolutely. You know, i would say this for the sake of having a conversation that anybody can kind of pier into when it comes to journalism vs. Politics when we find out information, we balance that along with do no harm. There are a lot of things journalistically that were thinking of. When have you politicians leaking out a closed door meeting, hearing, investigation, thats potentially really bad for what we have in this country, national security, you know, all sorts of issues. Its different. But i hear what you are saying. I understand Fox News Sunday this weekend has a very special guest. We do. Were going to be covering all the serious stuff, obviously. We dont go home empty handed whatever we can do working together to act. It would be nice to create something thats beautiful. That works. Look, is the Second Amendment here for the purposes of allowing us to go hunting and just protect ourselves if somebody comes at us with a gun . Really the real reason for the Second Amendment is in case the government turns into tyranny that we have the right to take up arms. So, i cant say that im in favor of any restrictions Second Amendment rights. Jehmu. Disagreement with our founding fathers. Every single democrat should find it refreshing to see a republican not kowtowing to the gun lobby. And that is what President Trump did. The problem is we have seen President Trump go out in a number of different situations, whether it was with the dreamers, whether it was with fighting the opioid crisis. Where he last hasnt delivered. He has made a lot of promises and hasnt delivered. It is something that i think should be applauded that he is going in the right direction. Its just i dont think we have seen him be able to pull it out. Hold on a second here. The president has delivered on every single one of his promises and he has attempted to. The dreamers, you know, these are people that came here by no fault of their own and its a moral and just thing to allow them to stay. Now, when we are talking about here with the gun control, this is a well thought out process by the president quickly after a massacre has occurred. And i dont think he has any intention of really subterfuging any of our Second Amendment rights and i dont think that the democrats should be jumping all over this like that he is not delivering on his promises. Its one thing to say that he is being a little bit walking across the aisle trying to console america in a time crisis, but this man has delivered. Is he going to get us the wall and make sure Second Amendment rights are protected. Harris let me step in here because we are talking about Chuck Schumer. He just has said. This is in my notes now just from moments ago senator schumer says president s remarks on guns are quote the best chance in decades to move on guns. The president is a dealmaker. He does this. He will put some ideas out there and then, you know, we see what shakes out. I do want to hear from the president though. Can we roll that . The reason i had lunch with the nra on sunday. I called them i said you have got to come over. I said fellow, we have got to do something. They do have great power. I agree with that. They have great power over you people. They have less power over me. I dont need it. What do i need . Some of you people are petrified of the nra. You cant be petrified. They want to do whats right. They are going to do whats right. I really believe that. Harris kenneth, talk to me about the relationship between this president and the nra. The president has been a friend to the nra. And i agree with the president that, hey, the nra shouldnt have power over anybody. First of all, nobody has power over donald trump and we have seen that but, his relationship is one where with everybody the man says what he means and he means what he says. Harris do you think they have we know that he met with the nra the president over the weekend Wayne Lapierre and chris cox. So, when you are looking at this, is schumer right, is this the best chance with this particular president. I think democrats have to take this seriously as the best chance. And. Harris do you think they are . One of the reasons why i am finding this to be very refreshing is also understanding that donald trump follows ratings. He understands that 98 of americans want sensible gun safety laws. They want background checks. He understands that the numbers are on the side of where the democrats have been. And not on the side of the gun lobby. So, as the president really does take into account these ratings in a sense. I think this is the best chance. But, again, he has to deliver. He didnt deliver for dreamers. He hasnt delivered on meaningful reform. Harris you know what . The president went farther for dreamers since you want to make it about that, 1. 8 million people. He didnt have to go that far for dreamers. That includes their immediate families, democrats are still at the table not wanting to put any food on their plates. Its confusing and antiproductive. Kenneth . Let me say this. The president is not some hollow shrill for ratings. The president is a guy where people do not give him credit that he is a free thinker and he does things that his heart tells him to do. So, while here in this specific circumstance, i dont think that our Second Amendment rights should be infringed at all as a reaction to what occurred here. Put some guns in the hands of people in the schools meaning Armed Security guards in the. And maybe, maybe taking teachers who have gun training and allowing them to handle it taking away any other rights we dont go there. Harris you dont like what Dicks Sporting Goods did and walmart did yesterday. Thats free market. They can do what they want. Raising the age to buy firearms in one case. Well, there is a problem if he knew about it and accepted something of value from a russian source. The accepting something of value from a Foreign National is a violation of the campaign laws. And its a felony. Harris all right. As a layperson, have you gone from he might have known to he had to have known. He had to have been told by certain people. And there had to be some sort of quid pro quo, something in exchange for knowing it thats a lot of dots. Right. Thats bob muellers job. If he cant except them, then he will report that but to make this even more absurd, in the midst of all of, this during one of his campaign stops. Very famous statement he made, hey, russia, i hope you keep hacking her, maybe you will find the 30,000 emails that she tried to delete. I think he said that as a joke. Harris you know how often we get hacked. Did he say that at the same time that the wikileaks stuff was about to come out. Harris you know that the equivalent to the h. R. Department for the government got hacked a couple years ago. Yes. Harris we have had some cyber moves on our government for years. You dont even need like high intel to know about that. I think i know how this came out. Because i think some witnesses who have been interrogated by bob mueller decided to speak to some of our colleagues here at fox. Witnesses are free to speak about whatever they were interrogated about. And they concluded from the interrogation that this is one of the avenues that he is pursuing. If he cant connect the dots. He will close the door and go somewhere else. If he can connect the dots. He is going to ask the president about this. Harris if he cant connect the dots on this on collusion, you think he will close the door . He will close the door. Harris its a fair question. It seems like the door has been open a very long time. Close the door cant connect dots on. Do you think close up shop . I dont think so. I think he is going to look at obstruction of justice. One of these witnesses also told one of our colleagues that one of the things that bob mueller is looking at is are these threatening tweets to Jeff Sessions intended to derail any investigations . Harris okay. So what does he have to prove, bob mueller, because you can tweet, i think what you want as long as it doesnt like threaten somebody physically. If President Trump says to jim comey in the old days or Jeff Sessions now i want you to stop this investigation because its too much crime and too much terrorism and the fbi has Better Things to do, i think you have to reallocate your resources. He can do it. But if he says i want you to stop this investigation im worried about the person you are investigating might say about me thats interference of an investigation for a corrupt purpose. That is what bob mueller is looking for. Harris he hasnt found it yet. I dont think so. No corrupt purpose, no crime. Harris wouldnt Jeff Sessions, i dont know, have a ground to stand on to get rid of Jeff Sessions if he wanted to and dont have to go back to the recusal which we know reportedly the president isnt happy about but how about just recently . He has basically had to say publicly, call him out, why dont you look into the Hillary Clinton side of the equation . Under a law the president could fire. Harris and the antitrump dossier and all of that. The president can fire the attorney general for any noncorrupt purpose. I asked him to prosecute hillary, he didnt do it. Im getting rid of him. He can do that as politically as incendiary as prosecuting hillary might be, the president can do that he didnt smile me at dinner i want to fire him. That would be absurd, he could do that if he does it for a corrupt purpose, is he going down a rabbit hole and down that rabbit hole is some bad stuff about me cant. Harris i would think that the president who has lawyered up and has good friends like yourself would probably know that. Thats probably why we havent seen it. But we dont know. Let me ask you about something else. So, Jeff Sessions and Rod Rosenstein at dinner. There was a picture that axios had. Right. Harris where do you think this is going . Because the president can literally what you just said fire. I think that former attorney general mike mukasey was correct when he told neil cavuto that Jeff Sessions has great job security because it would be a political bombshell if he were to be fired in the midst of all these investigations and i think the president knows that. Harris is the obstructions of justice thing coming out of mullen who are is that people trying to read the tea leaves . Because it keeps coming up as if it appears that it is people interrogated by mueller. Harris these witnesses who were talking. Reading the tea leaves. Harris what would you tell the president this week . Now the report is his attorneys, white house counselor still looking for ways for him to potentially maybe sit down with mueller or maybe it will be absolutely not. Harris maybe it will be written. Written the lawyers will answer the questions. That wont help bob mueller. He wants a face to face with the president that could be potentially catastrophic. Harris have you been saying no for weeks is a different reason now. There is no different reason on my part. Something is going on. Because his lawyers are smart people. They keep negotiating with bob mueller there is a piece of the muzzle that we dont know about. But the general rule of thumb is, you dont talk to a guy that owns a grand jury. And bob mueller owns two. You also dont talk to a guy that owns a grand jury when you dont use an economy of words like the president. They will want to trip him up and they will succeed in doing.
