When you have a police chief who is someone of color and you have like in new york city where the majority of officers are black and brown officers and you still say that the police force has systemic racism, how are you going to change things if the people in charge are of color . They are the ones that are perp perp perpet waiting systemic racism . It boggles the mind. They are the police chief. What they know is they work for the mayors. The mayors are far left democrats. They have totally have no idea how to handle this situation. They have ivy league ideas of new urban centers. Then it came down to basic things like law and order. The president is right to talk about that dining room situation. Because every voter suburban, urban, rural can imagine themselves in that seat. Having their food taken away. And Law Enforcement doesnt hold the people accountable who do it. You have anarchy at your dinner table and police who are sidelineed to do anything about it. This is a quality of life election. And donald trump is clearly the one who is willing to stand up to the mob. Joe biden barely stands up, let alone up to the mob. The dichotomy is clear. It washes away the major policy differences. I am secure with my family and property . Right now with democrats in charge, voters will say no. So, i love that you brought up the word secure. Sarah, let me start there. No matter what perspective you are coming from, there are not that many people who feel like their lives are secure from a Public Safety point of view right now. Whether its the folks on the left with black lives matter or those who are protesting who are talking about they have seen things happen in the hands of police and dont feel like if you are a person of color you are secure in police habits. Hands. Or you feel like your city is no longer secure. Because the hands of police have been tied. They are not able to do anything about the homeless crisis or the protestors that scream in the face of diners or the anarchists that call violence and break stores if you are a store owner and paying your taxes. Yet your store is being destroyed and you cant have your business. Sarah, from any perspective, there is not any security out there right now. How does that cut for each Canada Canada . Well, i think the president s right to talk about and have a message of law and order. The contrast between the two candidates could understand be more clear. One is talking about law and order for the last several months and empowering individuals versus the other which has been hiding in his basement and didnt even popup to start condemning this violence until the polls started to get closer. Thats not a person of conviction. Thats a person of convenience. Joe biden has demonstrated he is not capable of standing up and i think pete said it perfectly. He cant stand up much less stand up to the mob. If you cant do that, you cannot govern or lead in a time like this. Not only have the biden harris ticket not standing up to the mob, but they were fundraising to bail these people out of jail. The idea they being now transition to being a law and order team is mind blowing. Its the number 1 issue voters are concerned about. Only one person has been talking about this and standing up for law and order and defending the police. What is happening in American Cities now is not peaceful. It is destructive and violent. People are rioting and looting in the streets. We have to make sure that doesnt continue and President Trump is leading that effort. Leslie, if you look at any of the articles where they are talking about peoples responses to what is going on and your town center and there is violence or chaos or even homelessness, in general, you blame the local politicians. Thats who is actually in charge. Both campaigns are trying to lay this at the feet of the other side. One of the changes is women saying i am sick of this. I am really tired of being driven out of these city centers where everything is a mess. Are republicans capitalizing on that, leslie . Oh, absolutely. But its not moving the needle yet. Its something democrats need to be wary of. We are around the corner from the election but a lifetime away from november. Its great to say things like joe biden is hiding in his basement even though he met with George Floyds family. Joe biden is not responsible for this violence anymore than donald trump is responsible for each death by covid. In politics thats what we have become. Finger pointing left to right in the blame game. To your point, it is local individuals. What matters most in those areas. People in kenosha will feel differently right now than where i spent all night being told i would have to evacuate and thought i might be on a hillside because of fires here. People are concerned about their cities and also concerned about covid and unemployment. Right now President Trump may say he is the law and order president , but there are some individuals left, right or center or undecided who say wait you are the law and order and i dont see law and order right now. I dont understand why people feel if you have a problem with race you just a person of color in charge. Thats not the way to go. In dallas the city council did not have faith in her and didnt like her handling of things in their city. Leslie, made a couple of good points. We are looking at the podium at the white house because we are waiting for Kayleigh Mcenany to come out. We will put that on air as soon as it happens. Leslie made the point that putting a person of color in charge doesnt change the system. I wonder if its a step in the right direction. Her other great point about the violence in the cities is as much bidens fault as the covid deaths are trumps but its about perception. Tell me about those two things. I will start with the representation. We saw that having a representative that resembles you in any position signals that all things are possible. What it does not signal is that things will necessarily change for the individual. Having people of color in these positions, Police Chiefs, does matter in the sense that doors open. But as we saw with the first black president , we didnt see crime go down in his home city of chicago. I am not picking on anybody. His former chief of staff becomes mayor of that city and crime still doesnt go down. Resembling the person didnt necessarily speak to the issue of change. What does is having leadership on the ground to communicate with those people who think their best option is to be out in the middle of the night while molatov cocktails are tossed around and people shooting at each other. Thats the place they should go to make their case heard because they lack leadership on the ground. You hear black lives matter. All of it Needs Organization to make the points. I see the camera changing. We may see this press briefing start. I will finish with this. If you have the leadership on the ground and someone to talk with the public, you might figure out why defunding the police did not work in new york. They took away a billion dollars and you still have people in the streets and problems going on. It didnt work in seattle. Its not working in portland, oregon. Even minneapolis struggled and needed more National Guard and kansas city more federal help. If all of that comes back to the same idea, what you are looking for is vision and leadership. Cleaver then a pastor and now representative of missouri said after ferguson, missouri, it took a group of leaders to figure out how to keep the insurgents from other states moving in, in the middle of the night. It takes leadership to say dr. King did not march at night. He didnt got got to have vision. What is not working right now is happening at 3 oclock in the morning. When you are part of the crimes or you are mixed in it. If you made the decision to go out there sooner or later the line gets crossed between your decision and complicit. What do you see happening for the president with those numbers . Well, i think the president is in a very good position. One of the big indicators is we are seeing joe biden hit the campaign trail more frequently over the last couple of weeks. Thats a big sign his campaign knows they for trouble and have to do more to gather enthusiasm for their campaign. The polls are tightening, but the Enthusiasm Gap is widening. President trump has a level of support in a very loyal following of individuals that are incredibly enthusiastic. I grew up in politics. I spent my whole life in campaigns. I have never seen the level of enthusiasm and excitement as you have with President Trump in any campaign. I dont think that could be any clearer than what we see in the way that their campaigns operate. The president doing big rallies and joe biden doing small town halls. I know thats because of the vicepresident and his feelings about the virus. But i think seeing him hit the trail more is an indicator they know they are in trouble. I think the debates will be pivotal for both campaigns. I think that was one of the moments that set President Trump apart in 2016. It was a huge turning point moment for him and i think it will be this year as well. What i think is so critical, leslie about what sarah is saying. It ties together with one message. That has to do with joe biden being behind in excitement. You still dont see Bernie Sanders voters saying we will head to the polls. I mentioned the peaceful protestors you can talk with, are they going to vote . Thats a problem for joe biden. How does he make it up . Its a problem. Speaking to the polls, i would not disagree what sarah just said. The one that concerns me as a democrat is the marist pole with latino numbers in florida. Miamidade. Thats a problem. Joe biden and the campaign are not hitting the campaign trail because they are worried. Joe biden and his campaign are hitting the trail because Hillary Clinton ignored the battleground states in 2016. Ignoring states like wisconsin, pennsylvania, and michigan, that put donald trump in the white house. We have to look not just at the states but demographics within those states. Seniors where joe biden is doing better. The young blue collar working class. Thats an area that joe biden needs to focus on and do better with that Hillary Clinton ignored. And of course in addition women that have been fleeing but we are seeing numbers turning in some areas where there is unrest in cities. This is essential to any campaign. Its normal for the numbers to get closer. This will be a very tight race. There wont be a landslide for either side and both sides know that. Both sides have to be out there with those battleground states because those voters will determine who packages president in november. Talk to me about where the president has to be careful now. You are seeing a tightening race. You are seeing among a time or within a time when it looked like the president was really falling down on covid19 numbers. He came back and started doing more press briefings to address that issue more. What are some of the messages he needs to watch out for now . First i agree with sarah. The president is in a very good position. I am always squared when i agree with leslie but i do. [laughing]. We have a lifetime to go before the election. The debates will be huge. I think the one thing the president has to be most careful about is allowing expectations to be too low for joe biden. Right now, everything you are seeing out there he is reading the questions and answers off the teleprompter. Thats scary to look at it. You realize how far gone he is. But if the expectation is too low and he does okay in the debates, that undercuts the argument he should not where he should be. You spar with him toe to toe. Run on law and order the way the president has been. And the fact that joe biden is out on the trail only helps donald trump. The more voters see joe biden and his incapability, it helps President Trump. They know we for an urgent moment where we need someone to be aggressive. Now joe biden is asking for the same sort of acuity test and he is fine with that. The president got a lot of criticism for talking about those issues. Now joe biden is like look at the way he walks down the stairs. Two older men comparing their fitness if you will. I think it will be a key point during the debate. The viewers want to see does either candidate like they are struggling mentally or because of age. Martha maccallum brought up a great point this morning talking about battleground states. It was coming from democratic strategists. The title was why biden could lose the suburbs to trump. They pointed to white women with College Degrees who are starting to get sick about this. What is going on in the city center. They are out in the suburbs. Whether its the violence in kenosha. Seeing it spread around the country, these are voters that the biden team i think takes for granted and thinks they have won over. These white women. They talked about it with reference to their personal safety and home values. Thats why we are seeing a change that the democrats need to keep an eye on. So interesting. We talk about where you have it keep your eyes on. Republicans might have a little bit of an advantage in terms of eyes and feet on the ground. They started that door knock campaign. President trump is accusing joe biden and Kamala Harris of using rapid Vaccine Research to attack him creating doubts that may make people afraid to take it. Harris, thats a huge point. When you hear someone like Kamala Harris saying shield not trust a trump vaccine. People who believe in her would say wow, if she doesnt feel safe, i dont feel safe. There is already so much scare around vaccine and people taking them. Doesnt she run the danger of harming her own supporters . Even if they are not supporters. Everybody is listening to these candidates. We are under 60 days. She is not a doctor the last i checked. Wasnt supposed to be one. She wasnt in med school. I dont know that she knows any part of the ramp up to an actual vaccine. I dont mean to turn everything into race. I want to be careful how i put this. There is a sensitivity in communities of color about these things. We know where we have been in the past with the nation. Any time we talk about therapeutics or vaccine or things that can heal us, we need to come from a place of knowledge, power and empowerment. For instance, only do what helps. Only say what helps if you can. There is already in areas of our country that were hit hardest by covid19. Latino and blacks are getting it and dieing it from. Higher numbers. Those numbers are on the rise right now. Whatever you can do to make the station better is what you should do. If you are not a doctor, dont make so much about it if you are a candidate. I say this to people on both sides of the aisles but particularly Kamala Harris since you asked. Yes. Sarah, i we mentioned astrazeneca halting the trial with a suspected adverse reaction. Its normal to pause the trial and investigate that. It gives me confidence because as a business journalist i know these Companies Care a lot more about their Companys Health and that revolves around the health of the people who take their drugs versus politics. They are responsible to their shareholders and their patients and the longterm life and welfare of their company depends on them doing a good job on these vaccines and not pleasing one Political Party or the other. Do you think thats right . I think you are right. Harris makes a good point. Its disappointing that Kamala Harris would call it the trump vaccine. The president is not in a lab making vaccines. What he has done has gotten government out of the way to allow the experts, the scientists and the doctors to do what they do best. They have worked aroundtheclock. They are putting in hours and hours of work to make sure that they perfect this vaccine to the best of their ability. Youre absolutely right. It gives me more confidence they are putting this pause to make sure its right before it goes to the market and before people take. It i think the president has been right to move this quickly. But to do so safely. So much we have heard them talk about, listen to the scientists and the doctors. Now Kamala Harris is all of a sudden speaking as if she is a doctor. She needs to be careful. Thats not helpful to the process. We need to encourage our best and brightest and scientists to stay in the labs until they figure it out and be thankful they are taking every precaution and pausing when necessary to make sure a vaccine is safe and ready for people to take. Leslie, as a democrat, do you wish she had not said that . I dont like when either side does it. When the president talks about a drug that majority said didnt get rid of covid. She should not say that. Sadly covid is political. It doesnt discriminate whether you are a democrat or a republican. The reason vaccines take so long is what we are seeing with oxford. If you look at the earlier trials they had more issues. Thats normal when you are trying to come up with a vaccine especially so quickly. Then again, if a vaccine comes out before the election, i really dont think it will help the president necessarily get to reelection. There might be one or two voters say he is controlling covid19. Well, there have been so many books that have been written about this president and this administration. I want people to see the other side. The first cia director. There were a number of women put in positions of real power and influence in the trump white house. It wasnt just that we had those positions. It was that the president listened to us in those moments and turned to us and was willing to take us seriously no matter what the situation was. I was attacked and the president , i write about in the book, my own husband didnt know how to respond to. The president grabbed me walking into a meeting. He said you are smart, you are beautiful. The reason they attack you is because you are good at your job. Dont let them get you down. Now lets get back to work. This is a situation where if the president didnt know it was serious, he was ignoring the science. When he talks about its serious, he didnt emphasize that to the public enough. This looks like he will be blamed for minimizing the danger. It was february 24th when nancy pelosi went out in china town in San Francisco and encouraged people to go out there and tour. I would think she was privy to the same information the president was. What is your take on how damaging this would be . Well, i want to know the context of that conversation before weighing in on specifics. A couple of the hard facts. The president was one of the first people to talk about the coronavirus. It was in his state of the Union Address before nancy pelosi went into china town. The idea we didnt take it serious is untrue. He also took early action cutting off travel from. China to minimize the pact in the united states. That shows the president took it seriously. But i think its important not to cause panic. This was an unprecedented virus. Something even the science has changed on. We learned what has works bet best and what the impact is. I think the president took is serious. You could see that through the actions he took including in the state of the Union Address and taking that early action. Those were important steps. You dont want to create panic when you are still learning a lot of information. Pete, democrats realized that the coronavirus talking about it its bad for the president. Its not a topic that voters love him on. Is it surprising this book would come out now . No, of course. We are 55 days full of attempts by the left and the media to create distractions so we dont talk about the economic recovery. This is another trash trump book. He took it very seriously and attacked. It you look at the travel bans and the ventilators and what he did to wrap his arms around it. He also has the role of cheerleader. Saying hey, folks, we are the greatest country on earth. We can recognize the protocols and not destroy our economy based on the virus that china gifted us. This is a yawn to voters all of these reveal books. They have watched the president in action. I think in november you will see some voters voting on the mishandling of covid. Either survivors or those fearful in areas like los angeles or people that lost loved ones from the virus.
