Sandra we are waiting to hear the words discussed in that room, we have President Trump talking about guns and School Safety with the nations governors. It comes after he called for expanding background checks and arming some teachers, adding that states should decide on that. Today he told the governors the nra is on their side and said he will ban bump stocks himself if congress does not take that action. The president s with judge Jeanine Pirro over the weekend about some of his ideas. Background checks are going to be very important. There is no bigger champion for the Second Amendment then i am. Some Great Teachers who are gone adept, really understood weaponry and guns, if they had concealed permits you wouldnt have this problem. Sandra in the meantime, governors are doing their own work on gun control. More and more are signing onto some sort of control. Ohio governor john kasich, who did not attend the meeting shared his thoughts over the weekend. What i asked people to do is youve got to search your heart on this. This is not about whos got political power, this is not about a campaign contribution. This is about how you want to look in the mirror and think about what you did. Nobody wants to take everybodys guns away, nobody wants to repeal the Second Amendment. But this is about reasonable approaches to keep our communities safe. Sandra john roberts live outside the white house for us now where things wrapped up moments ago. I would suggest that you and the rest of the crew take a long lunch because this went on for an hour and 10 minutes or so, the president talking with the governors of the nation, a number of people got up to spea speak, greg abbott from texas let his thoughts be known, there was one i guess moment of confrontation you could probably call it, a difference of between Washington Governor Jay Inslee and the president , he stood up and said he doesnt like this idea of arming members of the faculty or staff in schools with weapons. The president countered that he thinks its a great idea. He finished up his marks by saying the president do less tweeting, a little more listening would be helpful. The president reiterated his support to arm certain members of faculty and staff and give them about us for doing it. The governor stood up and said there was a potential plan using Retirement Funds for exmilitary or exLaw Enforcement where you move over the retirement package from Law Enforcement to the schools and get an armed guard for free. Governor rick scott of florida stood up and said his statement is going to implement a plan to put armed guards, officers in every School Across the state, spend half a billion dollars to do that. He also said they are going to crack down on this issue of Mental Illness. People who are mentally ill who have purchased weapons, will have to give that back. Again i think the big headline today was the president saying that if congress doesnt take steps to ban bump stocks, he will do it himself. He said we will classify them as machine guns and they will be subject to all the restrictions machine guns are. Another big session, listening in and giving out his own ideas from the president of the white house. The third one. Students on thursday and on friday the state and local officials. The Vice President started this all out by saying School Safety is now the top priority of this administration. We will be hearing a lot more about this, grab some popcorn because you got a long wait. Sandra Jason Chaffetz on the couch, your thoughts as we are seconds away from hearing this . Jason any discussion with the governors about getting that and putting it into the senate . There wasnt really any suggestion or any talk about legislation currently pending in congress. The only Time Congress was really mentioned, daca and the bump stocks. Sandra we are going to be going inside the white house to hear the discussion the president had with the nations governors. Gun control, School Safety, some of the remarks that are already coming in as the president intends to make recommendations known soon. If congress doesnt ban bump stocks, he will. This conversation is a huge one, the president has been adamant about seeking out help at state and local levels to tackle this problem. We are now two weeks out from that school shooting. Weve been hearing from some of the survivors today including one little girl, a junior at that high school earlier today, she will make a full recovery. The president looking to make decisions on this soon. Lets listen to President Trump at the white house. [applause] President Trump thank you, everybody. Thank you very much. I want to thank our Vice President , for that really lovely introduction. I appreciate it. This is a time of great opportunity for our country. Weve created nearly 3 million jobs since the election. A number nobody wouldve thought possible. You go back and take a look at what they were saying prior to the election, nobody thought it was possible. Weve done many other things as you know and i wont go over them because we want to be hearing from you today. Many of the things frankly nobody thought possible. I think were going to have a big one coming up this current quarter. May be a nobody wouldve though thought. Whether youre republican or or democrat you are benefiting tremendously from those tax cuts. If you look at whats going on, its quite something. You just read a week ago, exxon is now coming in with 50 billion. In many companies. Also something nobody expected, they are coming in with massive bonuses for their workers. We know everybody is going to get a lot more income and weve seen that as of february 1st. Everyone is saying wow, i have an extra 250 in my paycheck. We didnt know hundreds and hundreds of companies, millions of people were going to be getting large bonuses because of what we did. One of the things we are working on is fair and reciprocal trade deals. We are not being treated fairly. U. S. Governors are not being treated fairly. And when i get to talk with the country, you are always going dont do that but i must say, its more senators and congressmen and women that call, you havent been calling so much, you want to see great deals. We have to make the deals fair. With mexico as an example, we probably lose 130 billion a year. For years ive been saying for the last year ive been saying 70 million but its really not. At some point we have to get stronger and smarter. We cannot continue to lose that kind of money with one country. We lose a lot with canada, people dont know it. Canada is very smooth, they have you believe that its wonderful and it is for them. Not wonderful for us, its wonderful for them. We have two start showing that we know what we are doing. China became strong. You look at it, going like this for years and years, hundreds of years. Going just like this. Im not blaming them, im not blaming mexico. Im blaming us because we did such a poor job for so many years. I am not just talking about president obama. I am talking about many. 35 years, the wto makes it almost impossible for us to do good business. We lose the cases, we dont have the judges. We have the minority of judges. Its almost as bad as the ninth circuit. Nothing is as bad as the ninth circuit, its almost as bad. Speaking of that, daca is going to be put back into the ninth circuit. I think everybody in this room wants to help with daca. But the Supreme Court just ruled it has to go through the normal channels so its going back in and there wont be any surprise. Its really sad when every single case filed against us is in the ninth circuit. We lose, we lose, we do find in the Supreme Court. Its a very bad thing, daca is going back and we will see what happens from there. We want fair trade deals. We want reciprocal trade deals. Governor walker has a Wonderful Company called harleydavidson in wisconsin. When they send a motorcycle to india they have to pay 100 tax. 100 . The Prime Minister who i think its a fantastic man called me the other day, said we are lowering it to 50 . So far we are getting nothing. We get nothing, he gets 50 , they think they are doing us a favor. Its a great company. When i spoke with your chairman, they werent even asking for it because theyve been ripped off so long that they were surprised i brought it up. Im the one thats pushing it more than they are but its unfair. India sells us a lot of motorbikes. They have a big number, a company that is a lot of business. They have a motorcycle or motorbike that comes into our country. The number is zero. We get zero, they get 100 . Brought down to 75 , brought down to 50 . I wasnt sure, he said it so beautifully. He said i just want to inform you that we have reduced it to 75 , we further reduced it to 50 . What do i say . Am i supposed to be thrilled . Thats not good for you people especially as governors, its just not right. With all of that being said, lets talk china. We probably lost 504 billion last year. 504 billion. I think president xi is unique, hes helping us with north korea who by the way wants to talk. They want to talk. We want to talk also only other the right conditions otherwise we are not talking. Theyve been talking for 25 years, other president s should have solve this problem long before i got here. Theyve been talking for 25 years and you know what happened, nothing. The Clinton Administration spent billions and billions of dollars, gave them billions of dollars, built things for them. They went out of their way, they continued with nuclear research. It was horrible. The Bush Administration did nothing, the Obama Administration wanted to do something. He told me its the single biggest problem this country ha has. They didnt do anything it it wouldve been much easier in those days than it is now. Weve been very tough with them, china has been good but they havent been great. China has really done more probably than theyve ever done because of my relationship, we have a very good relationship. But president xi is for china and im for the United States. Russia is behaving badly because russia is sending in what china is taking out. China is doing pretty good at numbers but russia is sending a lot of stuff. Talking about tremendous potential loss of lives, numbers and nobody is ever contemplatin contemplating. They want to talk, we will see what happens. Something has to be done. Today i want to hear your ideas on a number of Critical Issues but most importantly we want to discuss the Public Safety. In schools, Public Safety generally, School Safety cant have this go on. I am grateful that governor rick scott is here. Our nation is heartbroken, we continue to mourn the loss of so many precious, innocent young lives. These are young people i visited a lot. We will turn our grief into action. We dont have any action. It happens, a week goes by, lets keep talking. Another week goes by, we keep talking. Everybody is off to the next subject. When it happens again, everybody is angry, lets Start Talking. Bump stocks, we are writing that out. I am writing that out, i dont care if congress does it or not, im writing it out myself. You put it into the machine gun category which is what it is, it becomes essentially a machine gun. We are writing out bump stocks. We have to take steps to harden our schools so they are less vulnerable to attack. This includes allowing well trained and Certified School personnel to carry firearms. I dont know that a school is going to be able to hire a hundred security guards. Plus, i got to watch some deputy sheriffs performing this weekend, they werent exactly medal of honor winners. The way they performed was frankly disgusting. They were listening to what was going on, one in particular and then you had three others that probably would be a little bit later, a similar kind of a thing. I believe you dont know until you test it but i really believe even if i didnt have a weapon, i think most of the people would have done that because i know most of you. But the way they performed was really a disgrace. We must confront the issue of Mental Health. Here is the best example of Mental Health. This kid had 39 red flags. They should have known. They did no, they did to not do anything about it. Nobody bigger for Law Enforcement than i am but between people that didnt go into that school and protect those lives and the fact that this should have been solved long before it happened, pretty sad. We have to confront the issue and discuss Mental Health, we have to do something about it. In the old days we had Mental Institutions. You could nab somebody like this because they knew something was off. They had to know that. But you used to be able to bring them into a Mental Institution and hopefully he gets help or whatever. You cant arrest him because he hasnt done anything but you know he is like a boiler ready to explode. He just you have to do something but you cant put him in jail because he hasnt done anything. In the old days you put him into a Mental Institution, and we had them in new york, our government started closing them. We are going to have to Start Talking about Mental Institutions. A lot of the folks in this room close to her Mental Institutions also. We have nothing between a prison and leaving him at his house, which we cant do anymore. I think you folks have to start thinking about that. We have to improve our earlymorning response system so and friends, family and neighbors, action is taken quickly. You are the one mother, you remember in connecticut, she was begging to take her son in and help him, do something, anything. Nobody really listened to her and he ended up killing her. And the rest, you know what happened. She was begging to do something about her own son. You would a grandmother that would see the notes of her grandchild, he was ready to go in for a school. She reported him and there the Law Enforcement did a very good job. Fourth, we must pursue common sense measures to protect the Constitutional Rights of lawabiding americans while keeping at guns out of the hands of those that pose a threat to themselves and others. We must strive to create a culture in our country that cherishes life and embraces it with dignity. I cant believe the press didnt find this. I think they are getting a little bit you can never use the word lazy, you dont want to say that. We dont want to give them any more enthusiasm than they already have. I had lunch with Wayne Lapierre of the nra and i want to tell you, they want to do something. I said weve got to do something. Its too long, weve got to do something. We are going to do very strong background checks, very strong. Background checks. If we see a sicko, i dont want him having a gun. I know theres a time when anybody could have one. Even if they were sick. There was no bigger fan than me, no bigger fan of the nra. These guys are great patriots, great people. They are going to do something and i think they are going to do it quickly. We dont want to have sick people having the right to have a gun. When we see somebody sick like this guy, the police went to see him, they have restrictions on what they can do. Give them immediate access to taking those guns away so they dont just leave, sit there with seven different weapons. Give immediate access. Dont worry, you are not going to get any dont worry about the nra, they are on our side. Everybody is so afraid of the nra, there is nothing to be afraid of. We have to fight them every once in a while, thats okay. They are doing what they think is right. I will tell you, they are doing what they think is right but sometimes we are going to have to be very tough and we need strong background checks. For a long period of time people resisted that but now i think people are really into it. John cornyn, great guy, mitch mcconnell, paul ryan, Kevin Mccarthy are hopefully going to work on some legislation. They started already. John s legislation, we are going to strengthen it and make it more pertinent to what were discussing. Hes already started the proces process. The other thing, we need hardened sites. Just concluding, we have tremendous things happening. The country is doing well, we have a setback like this thats so heartwrenching. We have two clean it up. We have to straighten it out. Its wonderful that we are setting records. Black unemployment at an alltime, historical low. Hispanic unemployment at a historical low. Women unemployment at an 18 year low. 18 years. Actually i did very well with women during the election. Nobody wants to give me credit for it, as you know. Im very proud of it. To me these are incredible statistics and very importantly our companies are doing well, the fundamentals are beyond what anybodys ever seen. There were bubbles in the past, these companies were valued and nobody understood. Wheres the money . These are really Strong Companies we are building now, we have tremendous underlying values. I want to bring this the Steel Industry back into our country. Let them take tariffs, maybe it will cost a little more but we will have jobs. Bring aluminum back into our country. Recently we put a tariff on washington, we were getting killed, believe it or not on washing machines. That was to follow months ago. You have to see the new plans being built on washing machines and solar panels. Of the 32, 30 were closed and two were on life to life resuscitation. They were dead. Now theyre talking about opening up many of them, reopening plants that have been close for a long time. We make better solar panels than china. They were lousy, they werent good. We make a much Higher Quality solar panel. After two months, we are opening up at least five plants and other plants are expanding. By the way, it sounds a little hokey to say washing machines, its a very big business. You look, i wont mention countries. How many chevrolets, how many fords are in the middle of tokyo . Not too many. Ford sort of closed up their operation in japan because they couldnt get cars in there. Their Prime Minister is a great friend, a great person. I said you are sending us millions of cars and we send you one. If we make it so perfect, they tell me a case where they make this car so good, they spent a fortune. The best everything you can have on a car. The best safety. They brought it in and after inspections that lasted forever it was rejected. Thats a form of tariff, too. Maybe thats a more deadly form of tariff. To me thats just as deadly as 50 , 25 and 100 in many cases. So we are going to straighten it out, weve already started. A lot of it is statutory, you cant do anything unless you go through a process. You do a rule, have to wait 90 days. Its gone, dont worry about it. Its gone, essentially gone because we are going to make it so tough. A bump stocks, you shoot rapidly but not accurately, i dont know if youve ever heard what a bump stock does. Thats why nobody came to its defense. He used it in las vegas. Im getting rid of it. So you are going to ask questions, i am going to get all the things we want to do whether its transportation, safety, law order. One of the things the past administration would not do is give this incredible equipment, would not give it to your Law Enforcement. The administration of Armored Vehicles i guess may be why wouldnt they . People are in danger, people are being killed, shot and hit with the rocks during bad times. Weve given out hundreds of millions of dollars worth of our excess military weapon to your Police Forces and i will tell you, every time i go to one of your cities theyve come up to me and said thank you so much for that equipment, we feel so much safer. They can go in and armored van up to a site and not worry about being shot or hit in the head with a rock and to me its common sense but you know, what can i tell you . I will say this. Your group really appreciates it. Im going to ask brian to say a couple of words and we will go around and take some questions. Maybe we will have rick scott come up second and i am here as long as you need me. Lets get it all out. We want to help the governors, we want to help our states and make our schools safe. [applause] mr. President , thank you. I appreciate you, i appreciate all the members of the cabinet. I want to thank you for your hospitality and the first ladys hospitality yesterday evening, it was an extraordinary night and i am truly privileged to be able to visit and enjoy fellowship. Mr. President , i appreciate you having us all today, we can talk about issues with regard to infrastructure, workforce development, combating opioids. Prison reform, agriculture, health care. All these different issues and these are things we all need to talk about. The issue today is School Safety, Public Safety, mr. President. I shared this last night after the massacre in las vegas, the massive shooting, we lost 58 people. Over 500 people were injured. This was a person who used those bump stocks and i want to thank you for taking action to eliminate those because it essentially was a killing field down there, we had 20,000 people who were simply helpless. That is an important first step. You mentioned School Safety and Public Safety and we need to have this National Conversation with regard to what were going to do. I suppose you were looking for some suggestions, some ideas and it will come in the form of questions as well. Mr. President , with regard to the scope of the fbi background checks, if we could broaden those, i know in my state the background checks are much broader. It does not include adjudication of Mental Illness. It does not include an adjudication of a Domestic Violence protection order. Those are things that absolutely need to be included. We talked about this at dinner, my heart goes out to you into the victims. They are in florida and texas and everywhere else where this is happening. We need to bring the strength, the wisdom of all the governors and everyone else across the country to have this conversation. Something else weve done in a battle regard to School Safety is i included in my budget more money for social workers in the schools. Weve had shootings where we had bullied students sandra we are going to cut in here because on the righthand side of your screen you can see Melania Trump is now making remarks at the governors spouses luncheon while the governors continued our conversation with the president. She has right now talking about guns. With those values as a solid foundation, our people will be better equipped to deal with many of the evils in our world today. With drug abuse and addiction and negative social media interaction. In my role as first lady i want to make sure we knew to nurture and protect the most valuable part of our society and our future. Children. I hope you will join me today in my efforts and ask for your support. My office is reaching out to many of you in the future as we traveled the country and work to promote and fight for the wellbeing of our children. Thank you for being here today and thank you for all you do for your home states and territorie territories. God bless each of you and your families and god bless the United States of america. Sandra she is wrapping up her remarks at the white house. Now that were back, conversation with the governors as well as the president. Rick scott is now speaking. Going to the funeral of a 14yearold girl, her parents just loved her. You know you have to make a change. What weve done in the last its a little less than two weeks, weve brought people together, im very appreciative of what the president has done by bringing us together to talk about this. Its created momentum to make sure something happened at this time. The way ive done this as i broke it down into three things. We are going to have School Safety. No parent in our state is going to say i am concerned about whether my child can go to School Safety. If you go to a school in florida, you will know your child is going to come home safely. We are going to spend 500 million, i am not waiting for the federal government. We can invest 500 million. We are already investing dollars in our schools, we are not only going to invest more state dollars but any local dollars, the first thing all those dollars have to be spent on his school hardening. The most important thing we can do is harden these schools. Our sheriffs are going to oversee how all the money is spent to make sure the money is spent the right way. The money will be spent the right way. Number two, Mental Illness. Mental Health Counselors in every school to make sure all of our students can meet with a Mental Health counselor as often as they want. We are also going to have assessment teams, virginia did that after their shooting. Children and families, juvenile justice, teachers, principals, local Law Enforcement, we are going to do that. Next, we are going to invest more dollars in Mental Health, make sure we have youth teams all around the state. Finally, you are not going to have access to a gun if you are struggling with Mental Illness. Or you make violent threats. You are not going to have access to a gun in our state. A family member, a Mental Health individual, if they can make sure you dont have access to a gun. If youve been involuntarily committed because you are a threat to yourself or others, you will not have access to a gun. You will have to give those guns up. We are going to make sure that doesnt happen. All this information is out there so we can make sure we know who has a gun. In our state we are going to get all of this done in the next two weeks, ive been talking to my legislative leadership every day. They are committed to being a partner. I want to make sure every parent knows their child is going to come home safe and sound every day. Thank you, mr. President. [applause] President Trump thank you rick and thank you brian. It may be easier to just pass this around. Will off a lot of insight into what each Student Needs for student safety. We give our local folks a list of things they can do quickly, like limit the number of instances and then equip every child above the sixth grade with a chip activated card to enter that. Also you can consider putting in a metal detector in one or two or three entrances. A Surveillance System. That Surveillance System can be tied to virtual center. Certainly, training in Mental Health situation is fine before the immediate, i think we need to get some access limited and equipped with Surveillance Systems. Whatever they choose to be theyve got some local money but in our state budget theres been a technology fund. We introduced a bill last week to be able to free up some of that money for use for School Safety. These are not constant things but they are things that can be done immediately to improve School Safety. President trump thank you very much. How about going around the room, anybody have some great ideas or suggestions . Governor . We have a program called the extreme Risk Protection order system that has been supremely effective in allowing family members that realize there is a risk, to have them separated from their firearm. It involves a judicial decision and involves a hearing and it has saved lives i am sure in the state of washington. I recommend it for a national. It makes sure if you have concern about depression, it allows Law Enforcement to separate your uncle, your depressed uncle from his firearm. If there somebody in your family that may have some violent tendencies, after hearing you get in order to allow Law Enforcement to remove them. It has been in operation for years, its been extremely successful. The second issue, i know you have suggested arming our teachers. President trump arming a small portion that are very gun adept. That truly know how to handle them. I do feel its very important that gun free zones. You have a gun free zone, its like an invitation for the sick people to go there. I think there has to be some form of major retaliation if they are able to mentor of school and if that happens you are not going to have any problems because they wont go into the school. It would just be a very small group of people that are very gun adept. If i may respond to that, let me suggest whatever percent it is. Whatever percentage it is, speaking as a grandfather and a governor in the state of washington, i have listen to the people who would be affected by that. I have listened to the biology teachers and they dont want to do that in any percentage. The first grade teachers dont want to be i have listened to Law Enforcement who have said they dont want to have to train teachers as Law Enforcement agencies, it would take about six months. I think this is a circumstance where we need to listen to educators and they should not be foisted upon this responsibility of packing heat. In first grade classes. I understand you have suggested this and we suggest things and sometimes we listen to people about it and maybe they dont look so good a little later. I suggest we need a little less tweeting, a little more listening and lets just take that off the table and move forward. President trump thank you very much. We have a number of states right now that do that and i think with that in mind i will call on greg abbott. Right here. Texas authorized to schools adopt policies to implement a School Marshal program where individuals would be trained to have a weapon, to be able to use that weapon and we now have well over 100 School Districts in the state of texas where teachers or other people who work in the school do carry a weapon and are trained to be able to respond to an attack that occurs. It is not always a schoolteacher, it could be a coach, it could be an administrator. It could be anybody who works in that school. It is a well thought out program with a lot of training in advance and at least some School Districts promote it. They will have signs out front, a warning sign, be aware there are armed personnel on campus. Warning anybody coming in there that they if they attempt to cause any harm they will be in trouble. President trump i think thats great. Essentially what you are saying is that when a sick individual comes into that school, they can expect major trouble. Major trouble. The bullets will be going toward him, also and i think thats great. Nobodys going into those schools. Thats a big difference. That was really well said, thank you very much. Anybody . Governor s are so quiet, i cant believe it. So well behaved today. I cant believe it. We will start acting up soon. Mr. President , i just want to say in arkansas we have a very similar situation or program as texas. I have the belief that no teacher should be compelled and most of them want to teach and focus on that but others are concerned about their students and have training and specific capacity as you described. We have licensed certain School Districts and to those who want to be trained more significantly so that they can handle an active shooter situation. We have over 13 schools in arkansas that cant afford a School Resource officer. They prefer to have those either in classroom or an assistant coach or someone i would have a response capability and that is the key thing. That flexibility, i think with the governors want to say is we cant have it as a National Security plan but the states can develop this. We did make some recommendations back in 2012 in reference to federal grants, some of the biggest expense is training, some of the biggest expense will be the hardening of our schools. I hope your department of homeland security, looking at some of the grants that come from dhs in terms of security, some of that money can be utilized for local jurisdictions as well for the protection, the number one priority, protecting her students in our schools. President trump you know how well we are doing to a never ending quest, with respect to ms13 and of these people are really causing havoc in certain communities. Children and people walking home from schools, we are moving on that by the thousands but we have to get immigration laws that allow us to do what we have to be able to do. They are so soft, no country in the world has immigration laws were so soft like we do. That is also a part of it. I appreciate what you said, thank you very much. Address the congress and asked them to look at the hippo laws particularly for Mental Illness because we need help from the federal government to loosen up the laws so we can do truly good background checks on people. President trump that is what we are going to be doing. We are going to have the support from the nra having to do with our contracts, very strong background checks and a very heavy section on Mental Health. Far different than what we have. Give our perspective as each of our states are different and as i think this is not something we were engaged in before with previous administrations. I see there is a huge pool of retired Law Enforcement officers where municipalities and counties have invested all a lot of money into training them and now they are retired and often because they are receiving a public retirement, they cannot go back into that similar kind of retirement plan. If they go into an educational fund, they can work for a school, he trained, the school doesnt have to train them but they can learn and figure out where cameras and different security pieces need to be implement it within the schools because of their experience and training. This is a pool of folks we can immediately put out without having to expend a great amount of dollars in keeping our schools and our personnel safe. President trump well said. The fact is if you have a teacher or a coach or somebody thats very adept, only adapt. A lot of people dont know what it looks like, they cant lift it. Only adapt at weaponry and guns and only a small number, you dont need that many. We all learned a lot over the weekend or last week when you saw a man that was properly armed standing outside, probably afraid to go in and now it turns out there were probably four of them. They dont love the students, they dont know the students. The teachers love the students and want to protect those students. The other thing is cost. The school in florida was so large, such a big school. You wouldve had to have 150 guards to have that building properly managed. You have an armed camp whereas doing it like you are suggesting and many people in this room agree with, it costs almost nothing. I would give a bonus to them. They will go through a strenuous training, i would like to give them a bonus. Lets say you gave them a 1,000 bonus for the year, 50 or 60 of them in the school. Compare that to paying 40, 50, 60,000 each. Where are the schools going to get that kind of money . Somebody suggested we are going to harden the doors, make it impossible to get in. Thats good except in one instance, if the killer gets in and closes the doors and you cant get into the school. They said never thought of that. Dont forget, i was in the real estate business. When you harden the schools you are not going to get him but if they get in you are not going to get in, Law Enforcement is not getting in. Somebody else said we have something we are working on. Smoke fills into the schools. You have a guy standing there with a weapon and now hes getting crazy because theyre smoke all over. Always going to do is shoot endlessly. He is going to go nuts. This is another plan, this is a new one. I am sure put out by some company that wants to make a lot of money. Smoke is going to fill the hallways, that is not going to help. Law enforcement is going to go and fight through the smoke, they are not going to know what they are shooting. This is a serious plan. I think i talk to that particular person out of it but i really when you talk about hardening. The other thing is the cost to your schools and your communities and the federal government will be astronomical when you start putting in main doors, closing other doors, changing hallways around, you are talking about hundreds and hundreds of billions of dollars and you can do it for nothing. As you and myself and our great governor from texas and others. I think there are nine states that do it that way and they are thrilled. You know what it says, come on in. They are not coming in because they dont want to get shot. Look at this guy, he leaves with the students. He tries to sneak away. The one who did a good job was the one who caught them a couple communities away. It wasnt in that community. He said thats the guy i think that maybe did it based on the description. He went out and got in. Who knows how much damage it would have been. He did a great job. Law enforcement is great. We all learn something when we saw peterson standing outside of that school, he wanted no part of it. He heard probably the screaming end of the bullets and he wanted no part of it. And then three other guys came to help. Or they wanted part of it. The only worse job is that they didnt have this guy earlier because they had 39 red flags. If you dont have retribution, if you are not going to do something very serious to these guys when they walk in they are going to keep walking in. They have to know when they walk in they are probably going to end up dead. They are not going into that school. Yes, matt . I would beg to differ with most of what has been said here. Were talking about things that are costly at monetary cost. I think its important for us to start at every level with our respective offices as well to feed the bully pulpit to talk about the culture in this society. I would challenge those in the media who want to mock and ridicule this, we are going to say that anybody that advocates for this, to find some fault and that person is a reason why this person should not be the one advocating for a higher level of moral authority to think twice because these are your children and grandchildren as well. When we mock and ridicule, the very foundational principles, you treat people the way you want to be treated, respect human life, respect the dignity of women and children and the people we have increasingly degraded in our society. This culture of death is becoming pervasive and if its not addressed by all the imperfect people in this room with a sense of purpose and sense of aspiration i think we are going to see a continued trajectory that is not good. Many things have not changed. There have always been guns and there were fewer restrictions. There have always been guns in homes in fewer rules. It isnt to say that these rules and restrictions are necessarily bad about what has changed is what we do or dont do as it relates to acknowledging the value and dignity of every human life. When you couple that with the number of psychiatric drugs that are increasingly systemic and have very severe warnings associated with them related to depression and suicidal thoughts, you put all these things in the mix and no one among us is bold enough or willing to step up and challenge of the fact that this is a problem. This is why it goes unchecked. I will call on you, sir, as i am calling on my fellow governors and myself to seize the opportunities we have to call america to higher action as it relates to our mores. Thank you. President trump thank you, and that is why we are here. I dont know if its going to be mentioned but you have to also look at videos, they are vicious. I dont know what this does to a young kids mind, somebody growing up, looking at videos where people are being blown away left and right. The internet, movies, look at these movies that are out there. Just by commercials, the level of craziness and viciousness in the movies. I think we have to look at that, too. They have a Rating System for other subjects, maybe we have up to do a Rating System for those. It doesnt take many months, if it was 1 or less, thats a lot. Thats all it takes, it just takes one person to do tremendous damage and i think it some thing we have to look at also. Question . Yes, governor. Mr. President , again, thank you for having us. I approach this as a governor, i approach it as a gun owner, my 11yearold son got his first year of the past fall. I approach it as a victim, i had a nephew shot and killed, an 11yearold. I approach it as a parent. With three young kids, just like every other parent and grandparent, we need to do everything we can to keep our kids safe. I think parenthetically, sometimes the language we use can help to find some things. Certainly understand the idea of hardening schools, but that seems like we are hardening potential military targets. I think we as leaders need to be saying we are going to be doing everything we can to make that school safe. I think there are steps, many of them you have begin to reference, that we could take that could make a difference. If we could look at this as a Public Health issue, you mentioned the system. We can improve the check system. A quarter of the guns at our sole dont even get into that system. A universal background check. We know 10 of our home homicin each year are in intimate relationships. As Governor Scott mentioned, red flag laws. Making sure Law Enforcement, families have a way still using due process. Remove guns from people that might see that imminent threat. I applaud you on bump stocks there is no other reason, we could look at the higher magazine capacity as well. Its one of those things we probably dont need. I encourage you as you go on the path of looking at what you can do in schools, i used to be an attorney general and ran all Law Enforcement academy. I want to make sure somebody is armed in the school. That they have that training. That we know that he or she, you recognize, they have that training that i as a parent can say that this person under pressure will know what to do with a firearm before we start introducing firearms into our schools. I think we are in a unique moment where certainly as i said, 43 times as ive been governor ive been asked to lower the flags, 12 of them for mass shootings. It is almost on the one hand to the point we are getting desensitized but here is a moment where everybody is talking, we can hopefully start saying what can meaningfully impact this not just for today but the future. I hope those areas certainly take the bully pulpit and the leadership. President trump thank you very much, great points. It was great being with you last night. You mention two words, under pressure. A lot of people never really know what that means because they train their whole life. Look at peterson, look at what he did. He thought he was probably a brave guy but he wasnt a brave guy under pressure. He choked and other people choked. A lot of people choked in that case. We have two have people trained, you have to have some kind of a budget where it works. I went through a very detailed could be 10 , 5 , 20 . Really gun adept people. Very few people would qualify on top of being gun adept, they have to go to school and learn. Maybe there should be a bonus given to those people. They start with training and have additional training every year and i think they should get a bonus. Its a very small amount of money compared to what it would cost. When the press covered it, the headline was trump wants all teachers to have guns. I dont want teachers to have guns. I want highly trained people that have a natural talent, like hitting a baseball or hitting a golf ball, helping people always make the 4footer. Some people under pressure can even take the club out. And you dont know what it is, those words are hard to train for. But you want to have the number of people where the bad guy has to understand theres a big price to pay when they mess around with our students. You cant just say we are going to harden our schools, blow smoke into the rooms, do all this stuff thats not going to work. You have to let people know they are going to suffer the ultimate price. I said it before, you are not going to have incidents. They are not going to do it because they are innately
