in fact, across all of the screens and across the army post it says this is not a test. and it is telling everybody to remain with their doors closed and to shelter in place. we can report that there are at least two casualties, emergency room officials tell us that at least two people were brought into the emergency room with gunshot wounds. there are possibly more injuries, more casualties, we can't confirm the number of casualties at this point in time, greta. >> when you use the term casualties, do you mean that they're dead? just to clarify that you mean they have been confirmed dead? >>. no casualties would mean that they have been injured and not clear at this point in time if there are any dead from this shooting incident. >> all right. well, we are also hearing that there are literally alarms going off, warning sirens, this is an active scene. this is not a scene where they are doing an active investigation. there is someone, jennifer, as i understand it, that they are still trying to reach. they have one neutralized but they think there is is a second one out there actively trying to hurt people, kill people. >> we're also told, greta, that state troopers are securing the periphery of the fort hood post as we speak. this is a very large post it's very large. one ever the largest posts in the country. obviously memories go back to november 5th, 2009 when major hasan shot 13 service members as they were preparing to go overseas. 30 were wounded in that shooting incident. fort hood at that time put into place very strict measures for the post in the event that something like this happened again. so, it is almost unthinkable that a shooting like this could take place at the same site at fort hood. everything is very fluid. we are not certain of all our facts. we do know there is a shooting and lockdown. we do know there is sirens and warnings and everyone has been told to shelter in place. two casualties. one report that 20 shots were fired in a post motor pool. no confirmation on that. they are desperately trying to find somebody. i do know that we, fox news, we have helicopters headed there so we can cover this and bring the very latest to people as this situation unfolds. where is the secretary of defense, by the way? obviously this is a military installation. >> well, the secretary of defense is in hallelujah right now. he is on route to a 10-day tour of asia. he has been meeting with asian defense ministers out in hawaii at the pacific command. is he not in washington right now. is he in hawaii on route to asia in the next few days. the secretary of the army was on capitol hill when he got word of the shooting. he left the reception where he was. he confirmed to our chad pergram that there had been casualties. we have spoken to army officials down at fort hood and we can confirm that there is an active shooter situation. they have not rewished that alert system. there were sirens going off all evening. and people are told to stay where they're. >> and i don't mean to take -- i didn't mean that to be a slap at secretary hagel when i asked where he was. he is in hawaii working and had obviously no notice of this. we all hear hawaii and we think something else. jennifer, thank you. if you will stand by as we continue to follow this breaking news. fox news correspondent casey stegall is on his way to fort hood. he joins us. casey? >> yeah, greta, you know, this is a situation obviously where i just got goose bumps when the alerts started coming in on our blackberries because as you well know i spent a whole month, the month of august down there covering every single day of that court martial for nidal hasan and was there when the verdict came down. i had the chance to talk to family members of the people who were killed back on november 5th, 2009. and when you see an active shooting situation starting to cross at fort hood, a place that has already been through so much and was literally trauma advertised and changed forever back in 2009 with that shooting, you know, it just gives you goose bumps. greta, you said it, i heard your interview there with jennifer griffin. i know everyone is trying to work the phones at this moment is a very fluid situation. the facts are very fluid as they are in these breaking news types of situations. but, jennifer talked about this and i want to elaborate on it a little bit more. fort hood is huge. it's called the great place. boy is it ever. i spent an awful lot of time there, got to know a lot of the soldiers that work there. in fact, one of the largest military installations in the world. 340 square miles just stop and think about how large that is. so, when we are talking about emergency crews having to set up perimeters and close down the gates and put this post on lockdown, that, in and of itself, is a massive undertaking. it can house some 6,000 officers. 82,000 enlisted personnel. many units of the u.s. army are located at fort hood, which is about halfway between austin and dallas, by the way, just for reference for folks not familiar with their texas geography. you know, just an absolutely terrifying scenario here when we still don't know if there is a potential second shooter that is still at large at this point; that is what we are trying to get confirmed. as jennifer said, not to sound like a broken record or being redundant but from senior law enforcement officials, they say that the threat of one soldier is believed to have been neutralized. there may be another shooter in the vicinity. eyewitnesses are telling some local media outlets down there that they reported hearing about 20 shots. at least three people hit. taken to area hospitals. but the post still on lockdown. and, you know, those warning sirens have been going off. a lot of measures and precautions were put into place following that deadly shooting in 2009 when hasan walked in to that medical processing facility and opened fire, killing 13 and injuring 30 others. so, you know, there are measures in place, but obviously with something this large and with so many personnel coming in and out of posts and even civilians, you know, working. largeuld point that out as number of civilians that live in the community of killeen, texas where fort hood is situated. there are a lot of civilian workers. they go on to that post every day. we need to make that point that we don't even know at this point if these are soldiers that are involved. or if these are civilians that were on post that had clearance. again, all of this information we're trying to flush out at this hour, greta. but, again, it just gives you goose bumps when you see active shooter at fort hood because it brings back an awful lot of painful memories. >> casey, thank you. of course, to bring the viewers up to speed if they haven't been listening is that this is breaking news. this is happening right now. it is reported that this is an active scene, that there is a shooting at fort hood. the shooter has been neutralized. one shooter has been neutralized. they are looking for one more. one person has been reported dead. we are not sure who that is, whether that's the suspected shooter or not. they were looking for a car. a vehicle, a 2011 gray toyota camry. that vehicle has been located. but we don't know if that vehicle is in any way related to this. this scene as you might imagine is rather chaotic. law enforcement are busy trying to find that person. they are not providing a lot are obviously looking for whoever might be shooting. alarms going off and everybody is absolutely terrified casey, you are headed there now. right? that's right. it's probably going to take us 3 hours to get there from the dallas area. we have a little ways to go. obviously working the phones and trying to get information. the problem is obviously we live in this immediacy world, right? we want information right away. all of the press folks at fort hood on r. on trying. don't. we haven't been notified so you can can imagine every news outlet around the world is literally blowing up their telephones and their email accounts trying to get the latest information. that's why they just have sent out this very brief description that there has been a shooting at fort hood and injuries are reported. emergency crews on the scene. no further details are known at this time. that is the extent of what has come from the public affairs department at fort hood. they are very very busy and, clearly, us reporters and journalists are all wanting answers. but they have to assess the situation themselves. they have to make sure that everyone is safe and then they are able to kind of get that information out to us. so, i know it's tough when we are in these breaking news situations and we want information, we want facts and figures straight aaway. sometimes it is difficult as you well know, greta, in these breaking news situations. >> and, of course, as you know, the size 340 square miles. they are looking for somebody. i assume that they might have at least isolated the person in some area. but, that is quite a manhunt, 340 square miles and 2 enlisted personnel are there on base. sirens going off. i don't know if they are still going off with only one shooter neutralized but they are terribly fearful that there is somebody else there and we are waiting to get the very latest on any casualties, people taken to the hospital or at virtually any information, you know, from the scene. but it is a terrifying scene at fort hood. casey, thank you. >> thanks, greta. >> and joining us former fbi agent christopher voss and homicide detective ted williams. you actually were stationed at fort hood, coincidently? and a former detective. >> yes. i was stationed at fort hood on two separate occasions. it's a massive base. i think one of the things that our viewers need to understand, greta, is that you have got both civilian and military personnel coming in and out of that base. so, there are always questions how if you are a a civilian would you get a gun on that base. it would be very simple because of the fact that these people have cars that are marked and allow them on the base. when you look at military personnel. military personnel allow them to have private phones as well as they have phones. one of the good things and sad thing about 2009 when colonel major hasan killed 13 people there is that they put procedures in place and they immediately moved with the sirens on this afternoon. people got in the lockdown positions and they have tried to at least apparently neutralize and looking maybe for one other person. >> i suppose what happens often though even though you hear these scary sirens is you think that so many times when you hear sirens going off buildings, fire alarms we ignore them. maybe they are more attentive. that is a terrifying thought that they wouldn't take them seriously. chris, your thought on this? >> well, because of the previous incident, there are three communities that are reacting to this and they have practiced and thought about it it's the civilian community that works in the area. it's the military community, and it's the law enforcement community. there would have been a tremendous amount of cooperation and rehearsal and planning since the last incident of 2009 between the military and local law enforcement. >> but would that include though the people -- the soldiers, the troops who are there, the enlisted? because i mean i assume they have been recycled out of there. that maybe law enforcement is ready for this but not the 82,000 enlisted people? they are probably brand new since 2009 there. >> there would have been a lot more turnover than the military people. they would have gone through the drilling. they wouldn't have been as familiar as the local law enforcement in doing things trying to seal off the base as big as it is. which they chented the state police were doing. so there is a lot more coordination and they will be able to narrow this down much more quickly because of that. >> it's absolutely terrifying when you hear active shooter and alarms going off and 20 shots and they still don't know if there is somebody out. they neutralized one but active scene. anyway, gentlemen, if you will stay with us. shepard smith is in the foox fox news deck. shep?
