Operated out of there literally slept sleeping on the ground or the back of a humvee for the next about eight weeks. Pete Army Lieutenant colonel joe whaley, on site for the events of 911 serving combat in iraq and is now currently the Battalion Commander of a historic new York City National guard unit, the fighting 69th. First time i was in york was 15 years after 911 it came to ground zero and instantly knew everything i did was worth it. Pete we also have ryan birdman parrott. Former navy seal and founder of sons of the flag. Ryan enlisted in the navy after watching the twin towers fall on 911. I did not want to be 70, 80 years old and say i did not do anything and i wasnt there. Pete also joining us as Army Combat Veteran graham allen. Graham it was a freshman when 911 happened and joined the military when he was 18 years old. Someone instantly said usama bin laden and alqaeda and its not an accident and everything changed and we are going to war. Pete last but not least, former Seal Team Six member who killed usama bin laden, rob oneill peered after 17 years of service he deployed over a dozen times participating in over 400 combat missions and one of the countrys most highly decorated navy seals in the combat vets with two silver stars and four bronze stars with valor just to name a few. Gentlemen all, welcome to modern warriors 9 11 generation. What an amazing spot. We have done a number of these, as you know, modern warrior specials not on more hollow ground than right here where the north towers stood. I want to put you on that day. Everyone at some level remembers where they were and you took the next step. That first day 8 14 a. M. Beautiful day here in new york city, whether here or watching it on the television by 8 14 the first plane was hijacked. Thirty minutes later flight 11 hit the north tower in 15 minutes after that flight 135 hit the south tower and flight 77 and 9 37 hits the pentagon. At 9 59 a few moments later the south tower collapses, four minutes later flight 93, lets roll, shanksville, pennsylvania and half hour after that the north tower collapse. Two and a half hours that changed our nation forever, changed all your lives. I will start simple. Where were you . What was your reaction . Graham, ill start with you. For me, first of all, im still trying to figure out why i am here after hearing everyones stories of what you have done and been surround by you amazing individuals. I think i am the youngest one here too. I was a freshman in high school growing up in rural mississippi. I was in mississippi studies class, as you can imagine what a great educational class that was. I will never forget it. We had our principal mr. Putnam would always call us young people, thats how he always addressed us. We were sitting there in class and he comes over the intercom and says young people, i hate to interrupt your learning today but something is happening in our country. He knew after the first plane hit, mr. Putnam knew that something was going on. He said something is happening that i feel like is affecting our country and Everyone Needs to stop what you are doing and turn your tvs on right now and by the time i got to second. , the second tower had gone down and i remember seeing coach lee, coach vliet wasnt the First Sergeant in the mp unit in a guard unit that i had no idea anything about at the time. I remember being a 14 yearold kid just being stupid. I talk about this in my book about how me and my friends there was a glitch and they cannot make this weird noise and meet my friends were in the back we started giggling at the noise that it made. I remember coach lee being the first turning around and for the first time in my life another man looking at me as a man insane do you realize what has just happened . Do you have any clue how this changes everything . I remember that moment for the rest of my life. As the years go by, over half our Teaching Staff goes off to war they were all in the guard and had no idea as a kid. It changed my life forever. I always respected the military, never in a million years thought i would join and then in 2005 i joined and that is when i go to iraq during the surge under president bush. Pete joe, you are here in new york city talk about it directly. Unlike graham im the oldest one here. By the way, the first in uniform appearance on modern warriors. [applause] i had just gotten off active duty a year and have earlier and i was taking over my family business. I my parents owned a Chocolate Companies i was in Long Island City, queens and my mom calls me and im a little hung over, 25 years old, the giants play denver the night before and its early in the morning and im trying to get up and do work and whatever and i remember picking up the phone and she says i think something really is going on. I thought she was [bleep] crazy to be honest and over exaggerating but from Long Island City we went up on the roof and you could see the smoke and see whatever and immediately i realized something had gone really, really wrong. Literally started walking on the other side of manhattan from queens over 259th street bridge because we were right there. It was one of those really unique situations unlike typical domestic ops whether hurricane or whatever for the guard were no one had to call anybody. You have people showing up at the armory that had not been in the unit for years looking to volunteer and get involved and whatever it was. I guess we got down here, got our gear and vehicles and got down here and about 11 30, 12 in the afternoon. Pete half an hour, hour after yeah, we literally set up our talk and our whole Operation Center right in Battery Park City and operated out of there, literally sleeping on the ground or the back of a humvee for the next eight weeks. It was just a very, very unique time in history. Pete over those first moments like . Crazy. You cannot see anything. Dust all over the place. I will tell you that your first initial instinct was to cordon off the area as best he could because no one knew whether there would be other attacks or all the intel at the time was with there be hotdog stacks that blow up or taxis and no one knew what was going on. We got as many people out to safety as we could and then set up for the next phase of the thing which was certain recove recovery. Pete brian, you enlisted because of 911 if i recall. Talk to me about that moment in that decision. I was sitting in class but i was feeling that class that i was sitting in along with probably almost every other one. Pete what class . Keyboard. Really good for the military. [laughter] i knew i was not going anywhere in life and i remember our teacher running to the we had the remote and you had to turn on the big tv and he ran to the tv which we were not allowed to watch tv in school and that was scary enough like what is happening. They turn it on and i remember saying its a possible terrorist attack. I had been toying around with the idea of joining the military and one of my teachers influenced teachers influenced me, vietnam veteran marine corps. That was the defining moment in my life when i realized that you know, this just happened so many people were killed or murdered and i can fix this but maybe i could be part of the solution. I got furious. I stood up, i left his class and went right to the recruiter station and said whatever it takes i want to get in the program. I want to go into the navy and hopefully be a seal. Pete you left class the day. That minute. Pete that minute. You went straight to a recruiting station. Absolutely. Called my parents later. [laughter] there it is. Pete plenty of us who all week later or a day letter but in that moment you knew. I knew. I think we all did. No matter if you are a freshman, already in we knew things had changed. Everybodys life had been instantly set on a different course that day than we originally thought. None of us knew, even getting us to the seats right now where we are right now it all started that day. Its crazy to think about that. Pete rob, what a different place to be. Yeah, i was a seal team to and on my third appointment overseas and we had done some stuff and i had gotten back to the unit in germany from close of oh and coast of oh and bosnia were like the two biggest things going on. We would take down shifts in the persian gulf but they were smuggling either illegal oil or dates. We werent doing much. We had a joke that we would never go to war. People now say train like you fight because you want to keep it real but we were at a point because there was going to be no more wars we would say train like you train. It was a joke. We would train really hard, train all day, train all night and drink and then we just got back from close of oh and we were doing reconnaissance and seriously watching people lean again light poles, trying to its like training to make a hiding spot. How can we be better snipers and getting back to germany and get ready for a trip to summer in europe and i was in the Operation Center typing an email and to somebody and they went to break the news on the television and a plane hit the north tower so we looked over and you see the fire and everyone was saying thats a big building. Thats a really big hole and a lot of flames going out. What about the people above it. We were concerned about the accident and how people would get out of the windows and we have to say prayers for the firefighters because they would regardless go and put this out and then boom another explosion. Someone instantly said usama bin laden, this is alqaeda and a terrorist attack, not an accident. Everything changed and we are deftly going to war. Pete you knew right there it was usama bin laden. Within seconds and we had heard about bin laden with the same bombing here and 93 with kumar towers and he would never really get us and we were all asleep and shouldve thought it came to the towers in 93 but unlike us they would not forget about us. We will forget about them but they dont forget about us but just because you dont think youre warm someone does not mean theyre not at war with you and thats when we realized that someone smarter than me and this is alqaeda and usama bin laden and everything changed. We no longer have goodtime trips to ever in europe we might not go back home or go right to wherever they are sudan, afghanistan and i always said im smarter to carry a sledgehammer than a gun but people behind the scenes are smart about everything and they will find them its a place where we knew he was an our mission changed forever. Our childrens lives just changed. Pete you mentioned that lola. We leave it right there for the opening part because its a perfect transition and we talked about 911 but lets talk about 910, the day before, the mindset we had and what was that mindset and where we prepared and why werent we so next we will talk about america before 911 and use it to understand where we are today. Pete welcome back to modern warriors 9 11 generation. Guys, i want to put you back as best we can, september 10, 2001. Could we imagine the terror awaiting us . I looked up headlines from september 11, so the news of september 10 and it was not alqaeda and wasnt afghanistan but rob, you mentioned you are training to train yeah, train like you train. Something we notice to even now is we get lulled into a sense of complacency. Complacency gets you killed. Does that mount a kite is not watching is now . Its important for the country to come back together because again, left or right, we are all their targets. They could use this but it should bring us back to, not necessarily 19, but 912. Pete we will get 2912 because thats an important that unity we felt that day after but i do think here we are, next year is the 20th anniversary and its 19 years but doesnt feel like we can move back into a 9 10 mindset that we are forgetting . Kids graduating from high school today are not were not alive. For me, 9 10, if i put it into anything i remember the feeling of being a teenager of that invincibility almost. Right . Not just that teenager invincibility but the blessing invincibility that we all feel from being and living in america, right . We all feel untouchable and all feel like nothing bad will ever happen. Pete america is inevitable. Yeah, exactly. When 9 11 happened it was not just this horrific devastating attack but this true like dropping of the veil for all americans that no, we are not invincible. No, this is the real world. No, there is or are evil people out there and again, whether people enlisted in the military or became cops or firefighters afterwards or did not do any of those things it just changed everybodys mindset to realize that there are bigger things out there that what we were were currently concerned with. Pete you went to west point, on active duty, got into the guard in 2000 and probably thinking i am basically laser focused on my civilian job. Im laser focused and have about nine months left in my guard career, bored out of my mind and the guard, nothing happening with the guard. Like rob said, on the seal team and he doesnt think theyre going anywhere and i certainly will tell you the state of the guard at the time was not very high. [laughter] we were out drinking a beer in the back. Yeah, hanging out. There was no shot in hell i thought we were deploying anywhere. Then the next day we were down at ground zero and that changed my mind. While one day i thought i had nine months left in getting out of the military altogether but the next day here i am 20 years later youre still here. Pete ryan, there was a spark inside you that you would make that move in that moment on 9 11 but were you, obviously you werent there yet that you wanted to serve. Talk to me about 9 10. Yeah, i was a kid, 15, 1617 years old and i was feeling every subject in school practically. I felt helpless in life. I did not care about anything and did not want to move forward so i had no trajectory and floating in a bubble. It was my bubble and that is the thing that 9 11 opened our eyes to. How small i was living in how big the world is and what i felt helpless at that point but when 9 11 happened it gave me that sense of purpose to say go do something, become a man. It changed our lives to step up. I cant be helpless anymore but go do something with my life. Before that i was going nowhere. 9 11 gave me meaning and purpose to do summary for people that i had never met but you know, i came back and the beautiful thing is first time i ever came to new york was 15 years after 9 11. Came to ground zero and instantly knew everything i did was worth it. Ditto. I never been to new york until years, 2013 was when i finally got to come to new york for the first time. Same. Pete rob, to end with you real quick, again, were talking about the bubble whether the National Guard or freshman or feeling in class, you are a navy seal on missions and you are still not necessarily thinking alqaeda. The whole thing i cant talk about what we were doing but we knew there was nothing going on. 9 10 was another normal day but its important not to get lulled into complacency. I tell people now makes kiss your kids and spouse every night like it was 9 10 because you dont know what tomorrow will bring. Pete great way to put it. Coming up, we transition to heading to war. You are all a part of it and then we will get to 912. On the other side of the break we will discuss that response what was it like in iraq and afghanistan and responding to those attacks from guys who did it on the other side. Age is j. [crowd boos] you can watch the rally live on foxnews. Com or or on the fox news youtube channel. Im Marianne Rafferty and now back to modern warriors. Pete welcome back to modern warriors 9 11 generation. Guys, as we were in the break you look over and you personalize every single moment of that day of 9 11, the people lost. The sacrifice america paid and then i look at you and the generation of guys and gals we served with and they said they would do something about it. I want to talk about what it was like to go to war, to be at war as a response and americas collective response to what was done to our citizens on that day. Iraq, afghanistan, it was afghanistan at first but then it was the iraq war and things became political and is that the good war, bad war but as a navy seal who was out there taking on radical islam is how did you view your combat experience as it pertains to retribution for what happened on 9 11 . When i joined i knew we were going to war. Pete it is train as you fight. Absolutely. But i was a new guy and knew nothing so i will say i was fearful. Showing up to combat, going to iraq my first point was through habbaniyah, iraq and in 2005 i did not know what to expect. You can train so hard but until you see the show youve no idea what he will do. You watch your older teams show you what to do in your experts. It was humbling for me. We get information on what we need to do and then we go do it right i had to think about justifying what we did and i just knew we were attacked on 9 11, they murdered over 3000 of our americans and our people and retribution was there in the hands of ourselves to go fight and everybody was in the military was working collectively for the greater good to make sure that never happen here again. It wasnt even a thought for me. Pete so, at what point did you realize it is not going to be a domestic response for the fighting 69, we were heading over there . I think it took a while, quite honestly. We got our notification of sourcing which means we were going to war in 2003 so we still had a long time but there were increases in the training and everything else. Once we got the notification of sourcing it was rapidfire because again guard lives were totally different. We had 680 guys in the imagery and Infantry Battalion back then paid 300 showed up. You are piecemeal and people together and the Biggest Mission we had initially was teambuilding. Getting to know the guy on your left and right. Very different feel, very different mission. We did a fort hood train op and ftc rotation before we went to kuwait. Then it was different also because we did not have humvees but went over with off skin humvees and armoring them up over there before you drive to burma so then there it was a different, the guard was not used to that. Were not normally done it. We took casualties and we took a lot of them are unit had 19 kia, its on the front papers here. I think unlike Traditional Army units the guard really hit home because it was, you were seeing it on the front page of the daily news in the New York Post and all sorts of papers because they werent used to it. It wasnt a normal thing. Everyone was from the same area so all 680 guys you deployed with were all new york, long island natives. Pete was there a spirit in that of this is our chance to get some after what happened . Absolutely. Guys were as motivated as you could get. The guys loved the mission and were as motivated and the brotherhood be created, no different than active duty for sure. Pete graham, how about you . For me, like i said, im the youngest guy here so finally by the time i got to the point it was right around the time of the surge so when i went to boot camp and all that stuff they were literally training us to head out the door. We all knew that. For me it was less about, i had less of the lets go get them retribution aspect at that point. For me it was more im not going to be the guy that doesnt do my part in this thing because i did not want to be a 70, 80 years old and say i did not do anything and i wasnt there. That was my thought process. Pete rob, you basically pulled the trigger on behalf of the nation. [applause] when you think about, unless you did something i dont know about, none of our stuff is in the museum here at the 9 11 museum. It did up for them. [laughter] pete rob, when you reflect on the opportunity to do what you did on behalf of what was done here, does it sink in a fully . I can close my eyes and see it anytime i want to but when it comes to the museum, the museum is a living proof of the resilience of this nation and what we can do. They got a new exhibit called the hunt for bin laden in there. It shows a lot of stuff that the intel people found all the way up to the interviews from secretary clinton, president obama and six or seven navy seals were on the ground and they could show it almost in real time hearing what it is. That hit home because they did a great job with more of my gear is in there, the dogs and his dad that he won cairo and other stuff from navy seals. It is surreal to be sitting here with the north tower was and how this was where the war started. And to have this memorial than they did an expert job of seeing it setting it up. Everyone needs to see it. Regardless of your political views which are far left or right and not both but this will bring you back to what is important. This brings you back to bite we are all here as a nation, not just as a nation but a western civilization but 80 plus countries that lost people right here in this 200 yards where we are right now. Its incredible and humbling. Just an honor to go from watching 9 11 happened on tv to being at the end but that brake team that went in, im proud of my guys going in but its an honor to be a part of it. I just wanted to say, quick thing he doesnt know yet but a couple years ago in a guy named bill dawson came to dallas, texas he was one of the original members of the class one from the ncdu naval combat demolition unit, president s to the seal team. I asked in front of the offense how does he feel to know that a guy like him who was the founding father of what today are called the seal teams, how does he feel that the seal teams specific person killed the most wanted terrorist in history and it comes from your unit sir and he started to cry. Humbling. Yes, humbling. But class one would call me a new guy. [laughter] [inaudible] and the hardest. Without question we finished with two guys and they made us fight it out. [laughter] i was the other. Pete that seems like it may or may not be true. Whats scary is i think hes telling the truth off mac. Pete we continue with this because what you see in this group is unity, unity of purpose. We talk about the unity our nation felt on 9 12 and can we recapture it on modern warriors. [ thunder rumbles ] [ engine rumbling ] [ beeping ] [ engine revs ] uh, you know theres a 30minute limit, right . Tell that to the rain. [ beeping ] for those who were born to ride, theres progressive. To show up. For the sweet. The hectic. The tender. The tense. And the fiery. But for many, migraine keeps them. From saying. I am here. We aim to change that. With. Aimovig, a preventive treatment. For migraine in adults. One dose. Once a month. Is proven to reduce monthly migraine days. For some, by half or more. Dont take aimovig if youre allergic to it. Allergic reactions like rash or swelling can happen hours to days after use. Severe constipation can happen. Sometimes with serious complications. High Blood Pressure can happen or worsen with aimovig. Common side effects include injection site reactions and constipation. It doesnt matter what each day brings. So long as you can say. I am here. Aim. To be there more. Talk to your doctor about aimovig. To save you up to 60 . These are all great. And when you get a big deal. You feel like a big deal. Priceline. Every trip is a big deal. Pete welcome back to modern warriors 9 11 generation. Guys, we have talked about 9 10, the day before, the day of and we talked about our nation response but i want to go to 9 12, the day after september 11 and the unity we felt. Im always drawn back to i dont know where i would have been exactly but george bush on the rubble pile with the bullhorn. We hear you, the whole nation hears you. Pete and the people who knocked the buildings down we all remember that. It still gives me chills. I can hear you, the rest of the world hears you and the people who did this [cheering and applause] and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon. [cheering and applause] usa pete we were unified and today not so much. Graham, you are part of a mission to bring us back to the mentality of 9 12. Yeah, well 9 12 specifically in my opinion it is the last moment we have had in a very long time where it did not matter what color you were, it did not matter what your special sexual preference was, political preference, nothing. We were americans. We have been attacked, kind of like your family, you can mess with your brother and your sister all you want but if someone else does weve got a serious problem. That is why we are getting ready to launch 9 12 united. The name speaks for itself. We have a motto, live like it is at nine. I like to say that between 76 is associated with our beginning and i truly, truly believe in our heart that 9 12 is our future and how we can get down the road united together as americans. Pete what did you see from new york . Most of us were engaged in certain recovery but i will tell you that the overabundance of people that came down to show their gratitude for the people that were working down on the piles was simply amazing. The pure exhaustion on the faces of the firemen looking for their brothers and the cops and the army guys that were trying to find people that hopefully were still alive out to no avail ryan, how about you . You ran in to the recruiting station but did you see differences in the way your community reacted and came together in response to 9 11 . The first time in life i saw the pure brilliance of america. The American Pride in our resolve, it made me feel like i was part of new york. You know . I live in detroit, michigan. We were all new yorkers that day. It was an unbelievable feeling to feel that we were all together and the power of this and at that point i went from being a shadow walking down the halls to somebody in this country and then i had a mission so it gave me, like you, everything in life to move forward. It was very, very powerful moment and i love what you are doing, brother. That day was so special. Walmart sold out of American Flags. You have any idea how hard it is for walmart to sell out of American Flags . You could not buy American Flags but they were everywhere. Like i said, we were all new yorkers that day and my hope is that we all remember that we are all Americans Still today. Pete rob, i will throw, i like to throw difficult questions your way and you never know what you will get from rob. We are not united as a country right now. If we want to create unity how do you do it like 9 12 that doesnt require what happened on 9 11 . Thats a hard question because unfortunately thats what needs but not needs to but like was graham said, no one was offended by the American Flag and cops were heroes. Port authority police, most certainly nypd they were heroes. No one was offended by them and no one was burying an American Flag without getting their hat handed to them. The thing was, never forget. Right here is pretty much the only place now where we will never forget. Right on this Hallowed Ground for the problem is we forgetting to never forget. That is the issue. Like i mentioned earlier, the truth needs to be told to people. We are not teaching our youngsters the right stuff. I am afraid that if we dont come together there will be a point where in the history books being taught in school it will stare religious scholars deconstruction operation. Seriously because were not teaching. Pete i know the headline youre talking about. With daddy and when he died it was a religious scholar. It should have been delta force kicked his ass. That would offend the bad guys. The world is better off but the loudest voices are teaching us the most crap. Pete great point. I would like to think that Fox News Channel tries to on teach the crap. Can we try to say less crap. [laughter] pete thats certainly what you get from modern warriors and the guys whod been there on the battlefield. I dont think anyone could necessarily top that. Coming up next on modern warriors, the legacy of 9 11. What it will mean in the memory of her nation going forward. Well be right back. To severe psoriasis, Little Things can become your big moment. Im joined by some great warriors of that generation. Guys, as we sit here looking at the reflecting pool of the north tower on this Hallowed Ground, as each of you has described it, is there anything else in particular when you think about that moment, may be as it pertains to your kids or our country that you would want to people to remember. One thing i remember about 9 11 is obviously everything is important for the First American to fight alqaeda on flight 93 was the plane crash in pennsylvania. People need to reflect on those heroes that died that day. Pete great point. I think the biggest thing to me is that we have to make sure we protect this sovereignty of this and everything that happened on this Hallowed Ground, what 9 11 meant, we are already in it. We are trying to see this every day as we try to rewrite history and trying to change what actually happened. There is even talks about not having 9 11 in history books and in classes because its too violent for children to learn about. We cannot allow that to happen. This happened. This really happened. Millions upon millions of americans were affected. Millions of americans the deployed were affected and this is something that needs to be taught and this is something that needs to be remembered and it is our duty as the current generation to ensure that we never, ever, ever let people forget. That is what were doing and we need to step it up. Pete line, any final thoughts here . Be a grateful american. We are one nation under god. It is that simple.
