Enough of the administration claims . Amazon on the potomac, jeff bezos is the new owner of the Washington Post and why he think he can revive the pain. New york mayoral opponents and the National Press still upset with Anthony Weiner despite the flameout. Whats up with that . In our digital download, Harsh Criticism of yahoo chief Marissa Mayer but is there sexism here . It is time for the buzz. First, we are going to hold the media accountable in a fair and aggressive and unbiased way looking highway stories are covered and framed and we will not afraid of mistakes or knowledge our errors and we will cut through the finger pointing and focus on the facts with some fun. Well continue the conversation online and we want your feedback. Send me a tweet about our show during this hour and, perhaps, we will read the messages at the end of the program. From the moment president obama halted plans about syria he has been getting pounded by the media from the left, right, and every are in between. You cannot leave the region hanging. It looks like the United States chickened out. Do you feel undermined . Has the United States undermined 9 leverage . The president is making the case to congress and the American People for a strike. But no one, including me, is buying it. We know president obama to be the reluctant warrior but he coming off as a reluctant leader. The president s press conference was embarrassing. It was as muddled and unconvincing as you could possibly imagine. Why has the mounting criticism cut across the partisan lynn . Joining us in washington, dc is a former managing editor of usa today and television and media critic for the Baltimore Sun, and reporter for the Washington Post and anchor on post tv. It is a rare meant when liberal and conservative commentators, least, right, upanddown are united in criticizing president. No one wants this war even the public, look at polls, 36 percent are approved of this. That is the lowest number of any of the wars, iraq, afghanistan. In the very beginning when we learned that chemical weapons had been used, people thought, okay, the media was thinking we were going to war. A couple of days moved on and we see a video, videos of the terrible, horrible, 400 children who were gassed and killed, everything changed. Pundits said, no, we are not going to do this. Even the media reporters and anchors, they started having a skeptical tone. What strikes me is often when it comes to president obama you have the gang at msnbc as a Cheerleading Squad but on this one, Chris Matthews and others opposing the president on syria. Does that say we have reached a moment where obama has no friends. Strange bed fowl bed fellows in the press and in politics. The white house is calming it a military intervention but when americans hear about this they think of war. They thinks obviously, of iraq and that has determined a last of the skeptical coverage. Also, the mainstream press. You saw yesterday there was a cnn video release and in releasing the video there was skepticism, well, we do not know the chain of command. Who, actually, released the chemical weapons . Was it the rebels in was it the Syrian Government . There was a question, why were the videos released now . They were not publicly released but obtained by cnn at fox. Before we get back to that, i want to bring david in because the television nature of this debate means that president obama giving the big speech on tuesday evening but before that, tomorrow, he sits down with wolf and Chris Wallace at fox, and brian and scott and diane and it seems to me, can pulling out the we stops with the big anchors. President obama is in trouble and knows he does this well. Media blitz is what he does well. This is his a game. I dont think it will move the dial. Assad, as we know on cbs tomorrow in an interview taped on sunday with charlie rose, that listen, what will the white house be like today finding that out. Here is what went wrong. President obama and secretary of state john kerry talked in this high moral plain and neither of them, im sorry, has that kind of moral authority. That is why president obama tried to bring john mccain into this because he does. You are saying the president of the United States, and i want to stay focused on the media, when you say he has no moral authority you are acting as a pundit saying he doesnt have what it takes to persuade the country but dont people in our business have a lot to do this . The tone has been concept california, aggressive. Is this another iraq . Gees i wonder why we are skeptical. That is our job. That is our job. That is our job. They sell this. By the time i tell without has done a good job in the media, the congressional hearings and cspan. When john kerry was questioned about the nature in the hearings of the opposition and john kerrys facts were all over the place. There is no radical well, okay, maybe there is. They have been telling us a narrative without facts. When the Washington Post describes the evidence of chemical weapons as alleged would we have seen that before iraq . It is the reason why the media is singing a chorus of caution. People remember and journalists remember the iraq war and the mistakes that were made this that war and in reporting that war. People lost their jobs. Everyone thinks about judith millers reporting losing her job at New York Times. But she went to jail in an unrelated case but people lost their reputations and news organizations had to apologize. This is a perfect storm. The natural skepticism of the press having taken a beating over iraq. We have the fact, too, so little support in the country for a military intervention. It would be different if the president just do it unilaterally so in a way are the media showing the public sentiment . That is right. As they did during iraq but the context of that, we just have been hit in september and the public is very much was wanting blood and believed there was a connection between saddam and alqaeda and the press certainly reflected that. I dont think the press should always reflect what the public thinks especially if the public is misinformed but with which i have had a hard time finding regular people let alone folks in the press who are supportive of this war. Most are skeptical. We talk about the impact of pictures or the lack thereof, because there are few reporters in syria, it is dangerous and risky to be there but New York Times obtained that and talked about the picture and the impact. A 37yearold rebel commander who they called uncle has gunned pointed over the seven soldiers, the captured government soldiers who were executed. That was an eye opener. But it muddles for reporters, we were thinking the narrative was, well, the rebels are okay; the assad regime is wrong. When you look at that, you think, wait, it is happening on both sides. An exit question on the role of commentators and we saw in recent days, white house strategy sessions trying to get everyone on the same talking points but who is over there but a bush of former obama aides including stehpanie cutter cohost of crossfire and robert gibbs, commentators, too. Does that raise questions whether they are following the white house line if their new jobs at the networks . It is outrageous. We talked about this especially with gibbs and axelrod. When i watched them especially gibbs, he is in a coma and someone says something bad about president obama, he jumped up. They are hardcore loyalists. That is not. One at a time. One at a time. That is their job. It is clear who stehpanie cutter is, she worked for president obama and on a show that is an opinion show. That is why she was hired. That is what viewers expect, to have an inside knowledge of how the white house works and in some ways a current pipeline. I dont necessarily i dont think anyone anythings either of them are journalists. They commentators, obviously, and of course, cutter will be pro obama but there is a difference between that and going to strategy meetings. That is so he can craft the message. When karl rove appears on fox and he is involved in raising many millions for republican candidates and possibly president ial candidate, santorum or gingrich appeared on fossil fox, it is fair to question that. Lets convince the country of the moral righteousness of going to war not by spin doctors sitting in a white house cooking up a strategy. That is what the program is. If you are transparent to the readers and viewers they know who the people are, then it is oh case. We are out of town. Send me a tweet about our show. Billionaire jeff bezos visiting his troops at the new rots and the staff tweets every comment by the amazon founder. [ female announcer ] a classic macaroni cheese from stouffers starts with freshlymade pasta, and 100 real cheddar cheese. But what makes Stouffers Mac n cheese best of all. That moment you enjoy it at home. Stouffers. Made with care for you or your family. Boss at the Washington Post with the amazon founder showing up to answer questions. Time to meet the new boss at the Washington Post with the new owner showing including jeff bezos what was the reaction . He had an interview with our reporters there but he isnt a guy who is friendly to the press in terms of giving interviews. My initial reaction to the wholesale was sadness and shock. That was everyones response because there is such attachment that folks at the past have. That was my reaction having worked there so long. My second reaction is a lost hope and that is where we are in the newsroom if you look at what he said. He is talking about invention, focusing on the customer, he is talking about a longterm strategy and patience and the idea that the Washington Post cannot cut its way to growth. A newspaper boardroom, across the country, all executives were saying, what does he know we dont know . How will he save this . Why invest 250 million of his own money, although it is not a lot since he is worth 24 billion. But he can spend a lot and not worry about so many acquisition, squeezing profits. And p and l has to match. Not living up to the circulation revenue should be you need new ways to get revenue. Here are tweets sent out first having to do with how can you run a newspaper when at the same time amazon is so frequently saying no comment and i felt that the most mowerful minds in the world can hold powerful inconsistencies. He was worried about any product 100 percent ad supported because you think the we customers as advertisers and then you are not around, you are a woolworth. Can you reinvent the way the news is delivered . I sat through too many of the ne owners walking in the news room. I have to say, for as cynical a lot we are, we are incredibly optimistic because now it is our mortgage payment. We want this person to be a genius. I was looking at tweets and i was thing, right, i have been there but he said the number one need, the rule, must be, dont be boring and i get that, but. Is there a concern as this guy lives in seattle and keeps his day job that he will be too hands off and have no magic wand . I think people sort of want him to be hands on. The Washington Post has had a great run over the last six months with the new editor and i dont think we want him meddling in the editorial part of the paper. He says that the Washington Post does great investigative reporting but the other sites abrogate for it free but that takes away for wanting to pay for subscriptions. That is the newspaper problem no one wants to pay for what is on the internet. Getting Digital Subscribers was difficult and it took New York Times and the Washington Post a very long time to make that jump. In fact, the Baltimore Sun went digital before the Washington Post i have to point out. Great discussion, thank you all. Up next, two days ago before new york democrats vote for mayor and they are still talking about Anthony Weiner mouthing off to a heckler. Come in where . Welcome to my mom cave. Wow. Sit down. Couldnt get enough of new rksayor the National Media could nature get enough with the mayoral race melting down and the press is still on the case of weiner after he responded sharply to a heckler who taunted him. Very nice. Very nice. Disgusting. They want to know [blank] and now we have our guests, welcome, michelle. My question is, this video of Anthony Weiner going on and on and on after this guy, the moron, who verbally accosted him. Why, exactly, is this big news . Everyone loves a train wreck and he has been a consistent train wreck for several months. So, while as a congressman he wasnt that great and as a mayoral candidate he is down his penis is a national celebrity. That is what we want to talk about. I dont. I dont. I dont want to talk about genitalrelated mayoral stories anymore. We should be done. I thought we were done. When he was carlos danger, and the woman came out and said they remain sexting even after he resigned from congress and he promised his wife he would not. She looks to be on the up and up. That was a legitimate story. Now he is running fourth or fifth in single digit and he is not going to be the next hair and he gets into it with a heckler and i have seen that tape a hundred times and it is not about sex. He is on the sunday shows and there is a moment in the campaign when the two things meshed, new york was about to have the first democrat mayor in 20 years and liberals in new york are tired of authoritarian liberalism and he had sex appeal, not appeal but sex, anyway, and, then, the political story and the two lived in that space. We could talk about a grownup thing which was democrats trending more liberal left in new york and we could make people a flinstones vitamin. Now they have decoupled so what do we have . Some say we are not grown up we are still kicking him around. The words Anthony Weiner and grownup should not be used in together. I it is sad. You mentioned a sunday show and i was stunned to learn that meet the press this morning aired an interview with one Anthony Weiner the only new york mayoral candidate as far as i can tell to be on the program. Lets look at that. Your wife was part of this and in that piece she talked about how you had changed and at that time she didnt even know your behavior was continuing and still going on. Does that not show a capacity to look someone in the eye and lie not just to your wife but the reporter and the public. Thinks were a lot people debtor that people profile. I am aghast. A guy who who accused of internet flashing on a park bench in new york. And the reporter went there. That doesnt seem. What about the decision by nbc to give this guy air time. Bill is not a household name but he is 41 percent in the poll and could be the next mayor and the National Coverage, not new york, but the National Coverage is not about these three candidates but about this guy. And california and new york particularly can be leading indicators of where the country is going and in new york it matters to america because as they trend, new york democrats trend away and that is not good for president obama. It is a sweet approach how we cover news. None of electrifying figures and that is what they care about. People watch year neither because bill is not making anyones heart go pitter pat. And we could have the first lesbian and first woman to lead new york city. Why is that not a natural singer . He is a national joke. That is we cant people cannot get their mind around what he did and he nearly won this thing. Sex and new york politics, why is there a sudden interest in the new York City Comptroller race that includes spitzer . He is not inherently fascinating election . Come back story is election but isnt it about spitzer and the circumstances under which he resigned which was for frat fraternizing prostitutes. We would never cover that election at all. Even client number cannot get up interest in that. So wrong. So wrong. That drives me crazy. The los angeles race and the new york mayors race and the amount of National Team that either got for nonhe jinxrelated stuff is minimal. Both of you, thanks for stopping by this sunday morning. Echoing across the media landscape and especially on the b whh ops the web opens the dialogue to more televisions more than television could. The National Correspondent of the atlantic has been immersed in that. You are scent california of intervening in syria. Talk about the reactions and rebulges you have posted including a case for military officer and his wife. This is the kind of journalism that was not possible when we started a generation ago which is to have in real time a range of opinion not just the kind of views or gut expression you get in the Old Newspaper but people who in real time are with the military in the middle east saying here is the effect on our army, here is why they think we should or should not describe so it has been informative. You opening this up to readers, but, you know, you are the journalist, the expert, you worked in the Carter White House and have been a corporate in china. Why should i care what your readers think . There is a useful test of the market. I deliberately do not on my part of the site i do not have unmoderated comments, because that is a race to the bottom. I am saying i am able to get, probably, a couple of minute hundred messages a day for people around the world and enough of them are interesting but what we have done is go out and interview people and we report the things that seem worthwhile, significant things representing a range of opinion. This is potentially more valuable way. You talked about what could go wrong if there were a military strike. Have the media in general been diligent in posing the questions. Guest it is always the case we overreact to the last mistake we made. The mistakes of iraq are in peoples mind. The mistakes were disasterous and that is something that many said, look, we are doing this too, too, rashly. Syria is different from iraq but the media are asking more questions now and the odd thing about the administrations case is they saying there is a problem which everyone agrees with. The connection between that problem and the proposeed solution is where the most interesting debate is happening. Lost the skepticism i read embedded in the reporting and in the commentary, was this a good or bad move politically . Has there been more about american politics and less about the United States response to what was seen as a red line . Guest sure, this is washington, dc,based journalism as long as there have been such things which most people here like politics and it is easier to convert something to the political ramifications than to know about the substance. Who will win . Who will lose. Guest exactly. In the reagan days there was a military strike and all stories were, what does it mean for his popularity . That is only part of the story. Are pundits really important . I was struck when a republican congressman asked secretary of state john kerry about tom freidman of New York Times who opposed this and john kerry said we often agree but not in this case. The cartoon from the new yorker in the 1930s someone said the same thing. A plus of the media age is that there are is range of opinions. Some have regular column but we can get messages who say i am a serving cornell in the marine corps and this is what i see. I know about chemical weapons and i see this. There is a bigger range. When president obama pulled back from the airstrike at the last minute you posted something in the atlantic. But then you read the transcript and you posted it again so we wanted your thought process which we could imagine imagine a decade ago. Marissa mayor is a celebrity ceo and getting all kinds of coverageinc e tookr since Marissa Mayer took over yahoo a year ago she is the subject of much controversy. The job is fun. Yahoo is a really fun place to work. I love the people there. I love the spirit of the place. Now a 20,000 word unauthorized biography sparked whether she streets her more hashly harshly because she is a woman. Sexism . Of course. Of course. Look, 21 of the fortune 500 c. E. O. s are women. People do not know how to cover women in the media. In 2013. 21 out of the 500 . Yes, in 2013 because women are in a double bind on several fronts. One, if you look good, and you are put together, people automatically assume you are a barbie and stupid. That doesnt happen on tv . Never. If you dont look go and you look like you do not care, people think you do not care and that translates into not caring about your job. Would you of say that about a man . Marissa mayer especially being in the tech field gets enormous coverage so she basks in that and it is good for yahoo and if she is criticized, well, this is sexism. That is not true. People do not spend more time talking about the job of the look at the yahoo email design. How many articles about that . But how many were this about the vogue spread she did . Can we look at that, control room . She obviously was fitted and made up for many hours. No one forced the c. E. O. Of yahoo to pose for the pictures and you are complaining we are coughing it. No, i am saying it is a double bind. You want to look good and get in made an audience you would not normally get in and put yourself out this and people say, that is all she, a pretty face. She has an engineering degree and one of the first employees of google. Back to this article by carlson, extensively reported piece but in criticism he called her absurd in obsession with detail, constantly late and cancels meetings. I read that article once and i read it begin and put in the pronounce he rather than she. It read fine to me. He criticized former acting c. E. O. And said how good he looked in the sweater vest. He did a great job at trying to humanize her, criticize her and at the same time be fair. But he said she was brilliant. She got the stock price up. Yet, there was a kneejerk reaction of some saying he is calling hero boughtic and stuck up. We will not win until there are more women c. E. O. s period. This is talked about in lean in, people do not want to lean in. We are not seeing Marissa Mayer lean in the way that the author would like, addressing the issues. Marissa mayer said she gender neutral and it is time for the resolution to be so, good. We will not settle it here. P. Operatives and former aides are increasingly convinced he will abandon the job. Speaker boehner has had a rest tenure but despite the bold headline this is basically, speculation. And the Time Warner Cable settled a slug fest that knocked the network off cable air wears in new york and los angeles and dallas, saying they got most of what they wanted in increased fees and a pile of cash.
