When the president is talking about reforms that we need to see, his focus is not on banning this type of weapon or that type of weapon, this or that firearm but on ensuring that dangerous individuals who pose a threat to Public Safety like mr. Cruz in this situation are not given access to any firearms. It is the right approach that is targeted toward individuals who are troubled rather than removing the Constitutional Rights of all americans. Doug mcelway is joining us live from the white house where President Trump is meeting with the nations governors. That meeting is going on as we speak with the governors. We expect to have tape from that meeting at any moment and bring it to you when it happens. A high priority will be what to do with this kind of gun violence. Opioids another high priority that the governors will address. It is clear as you said that many of the nations governors disagree vehemently with what President Trumps ideas are about it. One is governor rick scott of florida who opposes equipping teachers in schools with weapons. Here is what he had to say on fox news sunday. I disagree with him. I believe we have to focus on people that are welltrained, Law Enforcement trained to do this. I want to make sure we have significant Law Enforcement presence on top of hardening the schools. Metal detectors, bulletproof glass. Better perimeter fencing. All these things. The other thing is i want to give our Sheriffs Department in each county the authority to create a program on a perschool basis. That parents can feel comfortable that their child is going to a safe school. Others are proposing other kinds of massive security investment in schools. The president spoke with the Indiana Attorney general who told him about a Pilot Program at one school in indiana that provides realtime video links and security measures with the local Sheriffs Department and if there is an emergency, the Sheriffs Department can tap into measures to save kids at a cost for one school of 400,000. Some questions why that kind of investment when bureaucrat ic or could you lastly, will the nra budge on background checks . Last week President Trump said he spoke to nra officials saying they are ready to do things. What does that mean . One example may be the bill for background checks under consideration in the senate. It does not include concealed carry reciprocity to carry a concealed weapon across state lines. The nra supports that Murphy Cornyn compromise even though it includes that provision. Is that the little nugget of negotiation that the nra may be willing to indulge in here . We shall see. Thank you. Jon classes set to resume wednesday at Marjory Stoneman douglas high school, the scene of that deadly shooting. Students returned to the campus over the weekend for the First Time Since the massacre. I dont want to go back to school until there is legislations. None are lockable from the inside. Nothing has happened. As such i dont feel safe going back to school. Jon were live in parkland, florida with the latest. Teachers at the high school are at work in their classrooms behind me today for planning days today and tomorrow preceding wednesdays official return of the students. All of this happening as state lawmakers, more than 70 of them, are calling on the governor to suspend the Broward County sheriff for incompetence and neglect of duty and the governor has reacted by ordering a Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation into the Law Enforcement response to this shooting. This all after it was originally learned late last week the deputy positioned at this High School Armed with a gun on the day of the shooting failed to barge inside the school to confront the shooter. Sunday students and parents returned for the first time to the school for an open house orientation. On wednesday they return officially for a half day where they will have to walk past all the banners and flowers and the still boarded up and crime scene freshman building where most of the carnage happened. Students called it surreal. Wednesday theyre back in the classrooms trying to resume studying two weeks after a 19yearold former student allegedly ubered over with his Assault Rifle and multiple magazines and shot and killed 17 people, mostly young students. As promised sunday Stoneman Douglas principal hugged every single student who came as promised. Its not like you are just going back to see your friends but people who are traumatized for the rest of their lives. You dont know what to say but there will be a new normal. It is just about getting used to the new normal. That new normal is still being defined. 15 people also shot and wounded that day. One of those student survivors junior Maddy Wilford along with his parents for support just spoke in an emotional News Conference with the media, with her First Responders there as well. All of whom thought she at first was dead. I would just like to say that im so grateful to be here and it wouldnt be possible without the doctors and First Responders and these amazing doctors. Now, Political Action is the one way a lot of Stoneman DouglasHigh School Students have been dealing with this. They all took buses caravaning to pressure lawmakers who were still in session to come up with gun control measures to deal with the ar15 Assault Rifle used by this 19yearold who had more than 20 incidents with Police Responding to his house. The republican version does not call for an assault weapons ban. The democratic versions do. However, the republicans control the house, senate and Governors Mansion in tallahassee. Today the parents here in parkland, florida are on buses heading up about 500 plus miles to tallahassee lobbying lawmakers to do something. Over the weekend, the last of the 17 funerals happened. It was for one of the students finally laid to rest. Jon so much sadness still to be dealt with there. Phil keating. Thank you. Some outspoken critics responding to President Trumps proposal for gun reform while Top Republicans have remained largely silent on the issue. According to the white house, the president is not deterred by the criticism. Here is Deputy Press Secretary hogan gidley this morning on americas newsroom. The president has already met with the grieving families. It was broadcast on air across the country. He has met with local Law Enforcement and now talks to the governors and lawmakers the try to figure out what would have stopped such a horrific tragedy. He is a father and grandfather and wants what everybody else in this country wants, safety and security for our children at school. Im joined by the White House Correspondent for the hill. Do you think theyll make any progress on this issue in talking to the governors . I think the rubber will hit the road this week now that the house and senate are back in washington lawmakers after all will be the ones who ultimately decide whether the gun laws are changed. So the president can talk today with the governors about some of these proposals on the table such as Arming Teachers or raising the age with which you are able to purchase some of these highpowered rifles. But ultimately again it will be up to congress to decide whether those laws go into play. Thats only one piece of the puzzle. One thing that we learned from this case in particular is that everybody failed. There were just every problem that could have possibly happened in the response and leadup to this was a failure. Yes, the senate and congress can get to work on gun laws but there is also all of the local reaction in terms of the many, many, many signs along the way. That could be an issue for governors as they decide do we want Something Like in boston where they have a behavioral intervention teams that goes out to a house where they see troubled signs and takes away weapons, gets Mental Health, some of those other issues. Do you think governors will be talking about that . Absolutely. They will be talking about the situation on the ground and as we saw down in florida, there was an armed Law Enforcement officer at the school where the shooting took place but that officer unfortunately didnt take action. So when you are talking about some proposal to arm teachers or other Staff Members at schools, some skeptics of that might raise the point a trained Law Enforcement officer was at the school but was unable to stop the shooting so there might be some discussion between the governors and president this morning. Is there any chance this debate comes up with an overall solution and is able to not be totally politicized into just a conversation about guns or just a conversation about Mental Health where everybody can get together and put some sort of solution on the table that encompasses all those Different Things . What is your take from there . I think at least as far as washington goes, i think it will be difficult for lawmakers to agree on some kind of sweeping proposal that includes guns and Mental Health. There is a lot of disagreement as weve seen over the past week plus over how much to restrict gun laws in the wake of the shooting. I dont see a big sweeping bipartisan proposal passing. Maybe some changes around the margins but nothing major. What do you think is the final outcome on the gun front . Do they raise the age for buying this type of gun . Do they outlaw bump stocks . What do you think ends up being the final take . I think the changes on the age might be difficult because thats opposed by the nra. We know that Many Republican lawmakers in congress are supported by the nra. I could see some action on background checks. That is something that republicans and democrats and the president agree on. The question is whether it comes in exchange for Something Like expanding conceal carry across state lines. Something that came up last year and controversial and could come up again in the new gun debate. Jordan, thank you. The man behind the gop version blasted it and the media as well. The one thing thats clear in this whole russia fiasco is that the media is dead. There is no i apologize to you guys in the media, but the media in this country, fair and balanced media, 90 of them are hard left. They rely on clicks to make a living. So when they attack people like me it means that im over the target and im getting to them because they have to attack me number one, to please their masters, their billionaire masters and number two they have to do it because theyre in on this. Jon lets get the take of our media panel today. Judy miller, investigative reporter, author and Fox News Contributor and joe concha, media reporter for the hill. Have you written the obituary for the media yet . Are they dead . First of all the media are plural as you pointed out. Mr. Nunes, you have to learn how to speak english. Bad grammar is a peat peeve of mine. The media are annoying, irritating, lib rat, not hard left but we are not dead. If anything what annoys mr. Nunes is were all too alive. Everything that we know or much of what we know about the russia interference in our election, about the things that President Trump does not want us to know, about his white house, about conflicts of interest, we know through the work of the media. So no, we are not going to go away. We are not dead. And that happens to be the largest and most vociferous critics of this president , not liberals. Jon lets get your take, joe. Local newscasts, newspapers, International Reporting is all alive and well. I will say that political media, however, is compromised. Pew research does a study. At the found that President Trump only received 5 positive coverage. That when you compare that with president obama he received eight times more positive coverage in his first year. So that doesnt explain bias, i dont know what does. The line between straight news and opinion has been completely eviscerated and americans are noting this at home. There was 91 of republicans see at least a fair amount of political bias in coverage saying thats just republicans, right . 75 of democrats also see bias in coverage. So i think thats what nunes is talking about. That people at home cant find an objective source anymore. One more point on what they found. They found that more than half of adults cant name one objective news sours source there now. People cant get an interpretation on what is real and what isnt. Jon the Public Opinion of us journalists is only slightly above the public regard of congress. Thats not saying much. Jon its not. One of the things that strikes me is that all of this stuff in the dueling memos was originally supposed to be secret. Representative nunes started the fight and joining President Trump in attacking news. We are fake news. They dont want the public to believe what we are reporting because what we are reporting is an Inconvenient Truth that makes the white house unhappy. Thats what this is about. Nuness memos which shouldnt have been released according to the f. B. I. And Justice Department was part of a campaign to undermine the russia investigation and the publics faith in it. Undermine the f. B. I. And he hasnt gotten away with it. The democratic memo refutes his alleged facts and he is trying to run for cover by blaming the media for reporting what is in the democratic memo. Jon i know you are the quarterback. Can i ask judy one question . You said before the media is liberal but not hard left. If youre conservative how do you think people at home that may have voted for donald trump and conservatives feel when they hear that. How we identify ourselves. It is true that an overwhelming majority of reporters tend to selfeye dent file as liberal and democrat. Does it affect their reporting . It shouldnt but it does. What is going on here is a search for facts. Not for spin, but for facts. Those facts dont make the white house happy. Thats what i think is going on here. Melissa the public invited to pay respects to the reverend billy graham today at his hometown in north carolina. Americas pastor is lying in repose at the Billy Graham Library and Jonathan Serrie is live in charlotte, north carolina. Billy grahams body is lying in repose in a closed casket in the building you see behind me. The building was the house that his father built back in 1927 on the family dairy farm here in charlotte. The house was later moved to a different Charlotte Neighborhood now the property of the graham library. Today and tomorrow the public will have an opportunity to visit the casket here at the library before it moves to washington, d. C. Where grahams body will lie in the u. S. Capitol wednesday and thursday. The last time such an honor was given to a private citizen was for rosa parks in 2005. Former president george w. Bush is expected to visit the library later today to pay his respects. During his ministry billy graham met with every u. S. President since world war ii. His ability to reach across political and racial boundaries earned him the nickname americas pastor and his early use of radio and television allowed him to preach the gospel to millions worldwide. I bet ive heard 1,000 times in the last week telling me their story of how my grandfather led them to christ and how my grandfather touched them and what it meant to him, what he meant to theme while they were here. Billy grahams grandson says he was touched to see all the people who came out including those wellwishers who gathered on overpasses and roadsides to pay their respects over the weekend as a motorcade escorted Billy Grahams cast kad from his Training Center in asheville down to his family home site here in charlotte. The mayor of oakland is warning her community about impending ice raids putting immigrants on alert and further strange relations between federal and local officials. And despite criticism from the feds, may or libby schaaf is defending her decision. I feel confident that my sharing this information, because i didnt receive it through officials channels is legal and frankly my ethical obligation. Spreading rumors of ice activities has been used as a tactic to strike fear and paralysis in the immigrant communities. This is something that i thought about very carefully before bringing this information forward. Jon so what do you think about that . Jonathan hunt joins us live with more. Jon, the oakland mayor says she is warning residents so they can prepare, not panic and she reiterated her citys determination to resist the trump administrations immigration crackdown. My priority is to keep this community safe. It is not my wish to panic people but to ensure that they are prepared with information. It is our legal right to not extend our precious Law Enforcement resources on assisting the federal government in enforcing what is a civil federal matter. And she suggested any targeting immigrants simply refuse to cooperate with immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Residents should know that they do not have an obligation to open their doors if on ice official knocks. Officials with ice say they have no idea what the mayor is talking about because they conduct operations every day all over the country. There is video, however, posted on social media showing at least one arrest being made in the oakland area and immigration activists there say theyre getting more calls from people who are scared that ice may be targeting them. It is important for us to understand that sometimes what ice is doing with these tactics is to try to paralyze our communities. We want to encourage our families to try their best to continue to live their lives. The mayor claims her sources are credible that these raids are imminent and she said she is absolutely within her legal rights to warn her residents. Just more of this ongoing battle between california the state and california cities and the trump administration, jon. Jon wow, unbelievable. Thanks very much. Well all you do is see this adam schiff. He has a meeting and leaves the meeting and calls up reporters and then all of a sudden they have news and you arent supposed to do that. It is probably illegal to do it. He will have a Committee Meeting and leak all sorts of information. He is a bad guy. Proud to be one of the bad hombres, i guess. What the president is referring to what really aggravated him is when his son came to testify before our committee, if witnesses refuse to answer questions and make bogus claims of privilege as he did, as steve bannon did, we call them out on it. The president doesnt like that. Thats not a leak. Thats a fact. Melissa political game ramped up after the release of the House Democrats fisa memo the president calling out adam schiff as he slammed the white house over the timing of the memos release. Lets bring in our panel. A democratic strategist and founder of ceo of Blueprint Strategy and the founder of Strategic Consulting and Fox News Contributor. I love it when something comes out and both sides claim theyre totally vindicated by what came out. It is just all i dont know if its in the eye of the beholder or the spin. What do you think of that . It is certainly the spin especially when it comes to adam schiff. I found it incredibly interesting that the fact his biggest concerning this weekend was the fact that the memo came out on a saturday losing maximum news coverage. It makes me feel as though this process again wreaks of democratic politics. What was certainly something that was eye raising to me is the fact this memo didnt provide in the bombshells. It made me question if the f. B. I. Was forthright. This memo suggested that the f. B. I. Did, in fact, have other information to verify the dossier and when i say that i mean that the f. B. I. Had other sources. And it wasnt solely relying on that. But it verified it. But the f. B. I. Director did say it was the unverified dossier. If that being the case is the information really true that the f. B. I. Contradicts what you are saying . There are so many things here it is hard to believe. Melissa a wall street journal had a great breakdown on the key differences and graphic analysis, great for everybody trying to follow along and your head is spinning with all these things. There was a lot of similarities, not a ton of differences. One thing that struck me is they cant use names, i guess, so they called President Trump candidate number one but then there was a tiny footnote about where the dossier came from and they said it was hired by politicallymotivated u. S. Persons. Shouldnt they have said candidate number two then . A couple of things that i think is very important and i want to direct my friend on one thing. Not the fact the memo came out on saturday but the fact that the memo was held for several weeks, unlike the partisan republican memo that came out pretty much immediately when the f. B. I. Melissa it was held by the democrats because they needed to do the redacting. I dont know, its been around and around on that one. There is no redaction on the republican memo. The bottom line. This is why people have zero confidence in washington, d. C. And the congress because it is a lot of political bickering back and forth. Melissa thats true. Jon the republicans want to release their partisan memo and the democrats want to release their partisan memo. We cant get things because of the partisan bickering back and foefrmgt melissa thats a good point. People are sick of the back and forth fighting and the fact in the midst of that fighting no one seems to be doing any actual work. Especially not the Republican Party. Melissa come on. Let him talk. You ended on a high note there. Lets let him have a moment here. I thought you were coming on with your coffee hour talking points not happy hour. Melissa hang on. One at a time. Why the peoples business isnt being handled. The truth of the matter is as americans we should have a concern with the russian meddling in our elections and what does it mean . Did the Trump Campaign or any officials work or collude with the russians . That is something that should be a concern. At this particular point in time we see the Democratic Party who provided no evidence of true collusion continue to ramp up this investigation and their talking points and for this season for this reason we are getting closer and closer to the midterm elections and still have no message. No money and melissa hang on, gentlemen, hang on one second. Does it bother either of you there is this secret court that doesnt seem to be accountable to anyone . That were having trouble getting to the details of how somebody made a decision about spying on americans on american soil. They dont have to put their name on the writings the way Supreme Court justices do. It is going on in secret. Maybe thats a big takeaway. Let me correct the foolishness my man articulated here. This is not the democrats investigating the collusion between the russians. This is the special prosecutor that has received high praise from the Republican Party number one. Number two, i have deep confidence in the Intelligence Community and f. B. I. And the process that has been there a long time in this country. The republican parties have made efforts to beat down and undermine the f. B. I. , Intelligence Community all because of what is going on with the special prosecutor and they want to pinpoint the blame simply about this memo. Melissa we have to go. Go ahead real quick. As a junior analyst i wont go at him as i could but i would say that please do. Melissa we have to go. Well have to save it for next time. Thank you both. Air force Lieutenant General david. Thanks for being with us. Does this suggest that the North Koreans wanting to talk to the United States . Does it suggest the sanctions imposed by washington are starting to bite or is there Something Else afoot here . Well, first off any attempt to communicate, to prevent the use of arms in open conflict is welcome. I would suggest to you that the actions on behalf of the United States to date may indicate, because of this outreach and openness to talk now, that the desireed effects the United States is trying to achieve is working. Sanctions backed up with diplomacy that is fully backed up with the force that the United States can wield. Jon the white house has said the era of strategic patience is over when it comes to north korea. Has Administration Policy demonstrated that . I think it has, jon. I think that what has been coming out of the administration has gotten the attention of the north korean regime and they understand that they can do one of two things. They can either move toward denuclearization and have their regime remain in place, or the other option if they dont is to see their regime eliminated. It is as stark as that. Jon the olympics are officially over now. The north got quite a pot of good publicity as a result of sending kim jonguns sister and so forth to the games. Should we expect new misbehavior from them now that they arent so much front and center on the world a stage . I think it is difficult to anticipate on the one hand what might come out of the North Koreans. One thing i would caution is the over laying of u. S. Perspectives on north korean intentions. This is a regime thats very much different in terms of the way it acts on the international stage, much less how it treats its own people. Subjugates them to murders, millions of their own citizens. Jon general jack keane has been on this program suggesting he advocates a total naval blockade of north korea. What do you think about that . Well, i think that the United States military, as general mattis has stated several times, has a spectrum of options, of which a blockade is one. But all of the particular tactical or operational level actions really need to be based on the circumstances of the time which gets us back to the issue of discussions and diplomacy. The one thing i would caution is weve got to be careful in terms of listening to what the North Koreans have to say. They may, in fact, just be using this as an overtour to buy time to build up the capability and capacity of their nuclear force. Jon, i think its important for your audience to remember since 1994 the North Koreans have promised in writing and verbally to denuclearize over 20 times. The only thing they Pay Attention to a hard power and thats what the administration is backing up its discussions with. Jon a lot of broken promises on the peninsula. Yes, sir.
