The president praising the city and all those who put their lives on the line to save others. President trump i will tell you the people of nevada and the extraordinary city have shown the world their incredible character, courage, and resolve. Nevada really is a very, very special place. Im honored to be here today at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police department in the company of heroes. Melissa White House Correspondent kevin corke joins us live with more. The president s message was a simple and poignant one. You are not alone and we will never leave your side. The message from not just the president but the first lady as they met with the first responders, Police Officers and victims of sundays massacre in las vegas. This, of course, happens amid renewed scrutiny over gun laws, assault weapons and the socalled bump stocks the gunman used in that las vegas hotel. Let me share just a bit as is customary. The president took to twitter to talk about his thoughts, taking his thoughts to the world. He said this to the American People in particular. So wonderful to be in las vegas yesterday and meet with people from police to doctors to the victims themselves who i will never forget. The impact of the shooting felt across the globe as the president and first lady promised to do all they could to comfort the hurting and support Law Enforcement as they continue to look for clues about the killer, his motive and any possible links to others who may have helped or inspired him. President trump on behalf of the grateful nation melania and i thank each and every one of you in Law Enforcement. In the depths of horror we will always find hope in the men and women who risk their lives for ours. A sentiment shared by so many across the globe. Meanwhile the gunmans use of the bump stock to convert his weapon from semi automatic to nearly fully automatic have inspired some to ask for a ban on its use. The white house isnt calling for that but Kellyanne Conway said it doesnt mean the administration isnt open to hearing from all sides of the issue. We welcome a thoughtful conversation on policies and issues. The Second Amendment is a bedrock within our constitution along with first amendment. These rights must be protected. These rights must be protected. To be clear, any conversation about an assault weapons ban or bump stocks ban or anything else that happens like that clearly would take place down pennsylvania over on capitol hill and if the past is any indication of the future, unfortunately that could be a very long and difficult conversation melissa. Jon President Trump turning the page on the controversy over his handling of puerto rico by taking on the role of comforter in chief during his visit to las vegas. The president vowing to stand by the side of the victims and heroes of sundays deadly violence. President trump i think the only message i can say is that were with you 100 . We are in fact, i invited a lot of them to the white house. If youre ever in washington come to the oval office. I will be there for them. The message that i have is we have a great country and we are there for you. Jon karl rove joining us now for deputy chief of staff to president george w. Bush and a fox news contributor. As you well know, karl, the commanderinchief often becomes the consoler in chief. How is this one doing . Yesterday we saw President Trump take on the two forms of that role. There is a formal role that he gave in his prepared remarks at the metropolitan Police Department which were superb. He is not comfortable reading off a transcript but you could tell as he read that these were his words, his thoughts, his emotions that came across as authentic and i thought they were powerful. There was a second role. You just showed it. The informal role at the end of the first event he had which was with the doctors and the Health Professionals at the hospital. He got to joking about how he had gone through the ward and had sort of said if youre ever in washington stop by. Everybody said we want to come to the white house. There is an informal side to this, too. We saw it yesterday with the president joking about this. We saw it at the Police Department as well when he turned around and put his hand on the shoulder of the police chief. You could tell they had an authentic bond there. He was joking with with the mayor of las vegas. She has been a particular critic of the president for a long time. But yet they obviously had a warm banter back and forth there. Were seeing the president in both roles as comforter and chief. The normal role giving prepared remarks and the back and forth and were likely to hear more about the informal, as people in the wards begin the talk about their personal business from the president. Jon he has savaged on late night television. Kimmel gave him props on this visit saying the president did well. That says something. Kimmel has been a particularly tough critic of the president. The president has had some missteps along the way. Good for kimmel he was willing to at least acknowledge the president did what everybody else in american knew, had a good day in las vegas and doing what we expected to hear from the president. I really was taken by his prepared remarks because again, they were invested with so much and covered so much yet they were relatively brief but the words were strong. I was particularly taken. We struggle for the words to explain to our children how such evil can exist but we cannot be defined by the evil that possesses us and incites some terror. Jon yesterday there was a report that the secretary of state had nearly resigned and used an unflattering term regarding the president. Rex tillerson, the secretary of state then came out with a News Conference while President Trump was in the air to deny any reports of that rift. Here is what he had to say. There were some news reports this morning that i want to address. First my commitment to the success of our president and our country is as strong as it was the day i accepted his offer. I think its the important element of the article is to reaffirm my commitment to this role that President Trump has asked me to serve and to dispel with this notion that i have ever considered leaving. I have answered that question repeatedly. For some reason it continues to be misreported. There has never been a consideration in my mind to leave. I serve at the appointment of the president and i am here for as long as the president feels i can be useful to achieving his objectives. Im not going to deal with petty stuff like this. This is what i dont understand about washington im not from this place but the places i come from we dont deal with that kind of petty nonsense. It is intended to do nothing but divide people. Im just not going to be part of this effort to divide this administration. Jon despite those denials there is all kinds of speculation you can read in the papers today that tillerson will be out after a year. That kind of thing. Give us your take on it, karl. The media love republican on republican violence and they love even more than that they love acrimony inside a republican administration. Youll notice the comments leaked to the paper supposedly were about a meeting earlier this summer. This white house until recent has been filled with people who seem to be interested more in leaking on their socalled adversaries within the administration than in doing their job. Those people are largely now gone. So my suspicion is that well see smoother waters ahead. I think the secretary was right to take this on head on. He i know him personally. He is a pretty direct guy. If he had feelings he would express them to the president. Im willing to take a bet that the end of the year well find Rex Tillerson still in as secretary of state and doing his job and god bless him for doing so. Jon he said im not from this place and i dont deal that way. Thats the kind of attitude that President Trump wanted to bring to washington call it drain the swamp but bringing in people from outside government to those high government posts. I thought tillerson handled that part of it very well. I thought it was also smart he sent our former fox colleague out to follow up with it and asked specifically about did he say this about the president and she said no. I think he was right to say look, where i come from we dont get involved in that petty nonsense. Good for him to stay out of it and good for her to give the explicit denial. I think those stories were more about settling old scores. Somebody who used to be in the white house went out there and leaked it to the press, gave a spin to make tillerson look bad. Tried to encourage antagonism between he and the president and keep him from serving his ultimate boss, the people of the United States and that didnt happen and it wont happen. Rex tillerson is motivated by a strong sense of patriotism and duty and service and the president of the United States asked him to put those values to work for our country and rex will do it until the moment the president asks him to go or its time for him to go. That wont be soon. Jon as you point out it took what, four or five months for details of this supposed conversation to come out. Right. I learned this in washington during my seven years at the white house. There are lots of things that are said and then they end up being transposed and trans muted and rendered into a form that you do not recognize. Thats the way washington works. The white house i worked in was relatively free of those kind of interoffice and interadministration squabbles. This administration started out with that but kelly has brought an end to that. Well see debris as people mine their own anger at being forced out of the administration and use that anger and channel it toward somebody else who is still in. Jon is that why youre in austin . When i left the white house i recognized washington is a wonderful place to visit and not a great place to live. I used to watch your dad every saturday morning on television in colorado. The punishment prosecutors want for the woman accused of dressing in a costume and killing a romantic rival. Plus 100,000 pages of documents and 100 witnesses later there is still no evidence of russian collusion. Now the Senate Intelligence committee announcing the probe is expanding. The issue of collusion is still open. But we continue to investigate both intelligence and witnesses. And that were not in a position where we will come to any type of temporary finding on this. Jon right now new information on some crime stories were following. Florida prosecutors are asking for the Death Penalty for a woman accused of dressing up like a clown and killing the wife of a man she later married. Sheila warrens attorney said she denies killing Marlene Warren in 1990 and will plead not guilty. A search for a missing 28yearold woman in indiana. Police in Michigan City say amanda missed a very important meeting and her family has not heard from her in several days. Deliberations resume today in the case of a man accused of killing his exgirlfriend and leading police on the longest manhunt in maine history. Prosecutors say Robert Burton shot the woman in 2015 out of jealousy. The defense said he acted in selfdefense after she thought him first. Melissa breaking details on an attack in africa that left three green berets dead and two other injured. The group was ambushed in niger during a Training Mission with local troops. Andrew peak is a fellow at the Clemmons Center for National Security. One of the most troubling details about this story. They were on this Training Mission. They couldnt have been easy to find when they were ambushed. Thats worrisome, isnt it . Its extremely worrisome. Usually when we see special forces deaths like this theyre on a raid against a hardened target like an al qaeda compound. Very rarely. I cant think of any in my experience have there been a combat death on a Training Mission for these internal defense patrols and Advisory Missions the green berets do so well. It speaks to the ability of the jihadists to gain information on where our forces are in these countries. Melissa they have no borders. They are moving into all New Territory when it comes to africa, how big of a problem is that . Thats right. The Counter Terrorism problem in africa is such a challenge because the states that you see on the map, the big rectangles are not big rectangles. Its not what they look like. Theyre isolated settlements covering with a lot of restricted terrain in between that jihadists can go from one to the other easily. State borders dont really exist. If you hit them hard in mali, they move to nigeria and now to niger which has a weak Central Government and where we have had to expand our advisory mission. Melissa whats the right response . I think under obama you saw an expansion of the missions the green berets do so well. Advise and assist local militaries in building up internal security. I think shredding the Leadership Networks of isis and groups like boko haram will be helpful but i think overall its a longterm governance issue to improve the government to control their territory. Melissa the russia investigation expands as the Senate Intelligence Committee Says it has yet to find any evidence of collusion. The chairman of that Senate Intel Committee saying himself that well, they arent going to share what they have so far. It doesnt mean they should stop looking. What do you think about that . Look, i have think the senate is really hard pressed to justify why it has an investigation going when the special counsel also has an investigation going. With many more resources. The fact that senator burr has been reported said he cant be sure that theyll have wrapped up the investigation by the midterms, thats two years running, says to me this is a little bit of a drawnout fishing expedition. Really the onus is on them to explain their efforts in parallel with Robert Muellers efforts should be sustained. Melissa not that its not an important topic but you get the sense the investigations only expand and only go on and get bigger and there is so much duplicity between them. You wonder if its worth this much time and effort even though it is an important thought but what do you think . Well no, i think thats true. The problem with the Senate Investigations and any congressional investigation, you have a bifurcated politically and the representatives are more responsive to people. They are similar to being more leaking. They leak like crazy in a way whatever you might think about bob mueller really his group hasnt leaked that much. Still the fight rages on in pockets to the north and to the east. Were live in jerusalem with more. Melissa, despite the ongoing fighting this is really an important victory retaking this city. Not only for iraqi forces but also for some of the Kurdish Peshmerga fighters. In the fight against isis its a great strategic victory for the iraqi forces so that they liberated this city today. Now that city were talking about is the city of hiwaji in iraq. The offensive to retake the september started september 21st. A tough fight. As you mentioned this is one of isiss last strongholds in that region of iraq sitting between mosul and baghdad, 130 miles to the south along iraqs highway 1. A major transportation corridor that isis used extensively when it took control of the region in 2014. Capturing this city aside from the various strategic aspects also puts iraqi forces into contact or close to Kurdish Peshmerga fighters in nearby kirkuk as you mentioned. This oilrich region claimed by both the Kurdistan Regional government and the iraqi government. Remains an area of contention in the kurdish fight for independence. And on that note iraqi Prime Minister said that we dont want any aggression or confrontation but federal authority must be impolesed in the disputed areas. He is referencing the kirkuk region. This is raising concerns about this region being a flash point for sectarian violence between forces and fighters have shared the common enemy of isis. Melissa john, thank you for that. Jon the las vegas shooter used an aftermarket device to make his semi automatic weapon fire like an automatic one. Republicans in congress are considering a gun control measure that would ban such bump stocks. Well get into the debate on that. An update on the search for answers to the big question why the shooter went on this deadly rampage. Melissa investigators in nevada still trying to figure out why a man opened fire sunday from high above a concert on the Las Vegas Strip killing 58 people and injuring hundreds more. Police body cam video capturing the officers responding to the shooting. They say that helped them figure out exactly how long the attacker kept shooting. At 10 05 the first shots fired by the suspect seen on closed Circuit Television from the concert venue. 10 12 first two officers arrived on the 31st floor and announced that gunfire is coming from directly above them. 10 15 last shots were fired from the suspect per body worn camera. So if youre looking at the math, 10 minutes. Melissa adam housley is live in las vegas with the latest on the investigation, adam. I just got was speaking with somebody this morning close to the case. The comment was he had weapons of war with no other application. Thats the way they continue to look at this case. He was combining and bringing these things together and planning for this attack here for at least two months at this location. Now it comes as a report came out about the tanks. There are gas tanks, jet fuel tanks 1100 feet away from the room. Adjacent to where were standing right now. Those we saw those inspected early monday morning here. There were bullet holes in the tanks. The report came out from the las vegas journal saying he targeted those tanks. Every person we spoke to associated with the case said it is not likely because he was doing what is called spraying. He was spraying everywhere and about 180 degrees. The idea for him was to mow people down. Not targeting, going after the tanks. Meantime as that report comes through were also hearing more about the men and women who responded. That camera those cameras show flashes coming off different parts of the building which would help explain. There has been conspiracy theories out there but help explain why people might think they saw stuff on Different Levels and different floors because the mirrored buildings show the flashes at Different Levels and explains why it took them a little longer to get to the 32nd floor. They had to make sure they only had one shooter. It comes as we hear more about the interview yesterday for several hours of Marilou Danley, the companion of the murderer. We are told she has been very cooperative from the beginning. Her Attorney Says she knew nothing about what went down here. I have not made a statement until now because i have been cooperating with the authorities and i have voluntarily flown back to america because i know the f. B. I. And las vegas Police Department wanted to talk to me. I will cooperate fully with their investigation. Anything i can do to help ease suffering and help in any way, i will do. So far she has not been detained. Thats a very important fact. Once they believe maybe she knows more im told she will be detained and brought back here to las vegas. To give it back to you, reminded me this morning that nothing has been taken off the table here. Melissa thank you. Jon meantime republicans in congress are thinking about discontinuing the use of bump stocks, the after market devices that turn a semi automatic weapon into an automatic one. The las vegas shooter used them on his rifles. He injured many in a matter of 10 minutes. Used them. Dont make their weapon into an automatic weapon. They can pull the trigger one time and it continuously fires rapidly after that. It makes an automatic weapons which we said decades ago that we will not allow for civilian use. Is this an exception in the process and something that needs to be changed . Those are questions that are reasonable questions after an event like this and were reasonable questions in 2010 well ask as well before they came on the market. Jon James Langford saying maybe its time to take a look at bump stocks. Lets bring in former Deputy Assistant Brad Blakeman and brad, is it time . Will this Republican Congress consider banning bump stocks . I think its absolutely time. Like any other regulation of any product in america, we should absolutely look back from time to time to make sure that our laws are consistent with public policy. And we have to remind our viewers that in 2010 president obama, with his atf, deemed the bump stock was an accessory to a gun. It did not modify a gun. We know thats not true. The bump stock can modify a semi automatic to make it mimic and automatic weapon which is illegal in america. It makes sense to do it. We should have the debate. Im all for it. If the laws need to be changed lets do it. Jon i assume if republicans are on board democrats are as well. We fix the bump stock exception. We can agree on that. I do think he has a little misunderstanding on both the law and on the technicality of how the Technology Works here. The law that we have that bans automatic weapons addresses springs in the action and the mechanics. The way an action im a gun owner and hunter myself. The way the action of a semi automatic weapons works is that the recoil, the combustion operates the slide and thats what brings up the next chamber. This does not alter the mechanisms which is what the atf said correctly. It doesnt fall under the current law. This is an exception by altering the slide links so instead the combustion bumps the slide back and forth to make it an automatic weapon. There isnt a law to address this and why we need one. This is a way that a manufacturer found to circumvent and make an end run around the existing laws that ban automatic weapons. The atf was accurate in their interpretation of that if you go back and look at what they said. Unfortunately the atf doesnt have a vote in congress to fix it. A bill was brought up by feinstein that would have talked about bump stocks. The republican majority killed that. Hopefully now we can see progress made. Jon on that score you are a gun owner. It is a Pretty Simple design. Anybody who has these kinds of weapons and wants to build their own at home bump stock can do it themselves. How do you legislate against that . It is actually not that easy to build a stock alteration like that. This is whats required of a kit and something to be manufactured. This is something we can regulate. We just have to update the laws to match the technology. This should not be a hard challenge. This is something congress, if it has the will, can do. Jon and brad, you welcome that debate . I welcome that debate. The Obama Administration could have done this themselves in 2010. They chose not to. I disagree with isaac certainly the bump stock is not it modifies the operation of the gun to do something the manufacturer did not intend it to do and certainly the law didnt intend. Obama dropped the ball and then in 2012 after sandy hook they could have again revisited this item. They did not do it. Unfortunately it takes a tragedy to revisit it to make sure the American People are kept safer prior to the bump stocks being used in an illegal manner. It with legislation. We may disagree on the history of the facts. I would go with what the atf said at the time. I think you can read a copy of that online. Jon all right. Melissa the girlfriend of Stephen Paddock, the gunman in the las vegas massacre, said she had no idea he planned to carry out the attack. F. B. I. Agents interviewed Marilou Danley yesterday as part of their on going investigation. In a Statement Read by her attorney, danley claims she had no warning and explained why she traveled to the far east weeks before the mass shooting. Joining me now is wendy patrick, a veteran prosecutor and Trial Attorney and heather hanson, a Trial Attorney as well. Wendy, let me start with you. What she said was that he had said he found a cheap ticket, here, go see your family. Which she wanted to do. When she got there he wired her the 100,000. By a house, this is my gift to you. She worried he was trying to break up with her. Is that plausible . You know, melissa, Law Enforcement views this woman as its best lead viewing the whole situation through rose colored glasses. This has been her boyfriend for several years. The axe murderer next door is what we thought. He seems like such a nice guy. Thats what she says. Actually she is contradicted by many people that have been interviewed that saw the two of them together. That knew him. That lived near him and knew his gambling habits. He doesnt appear to be such a nice guy after that. It appears that he actually followed a pathway to violence from grievance to attack just like everyone else. The girlfriend appears to be more of a companion at this point than a coconspirator. Melissa we dont know what the grievance is. Heather, it reminds me of the boston bomber case where at first the wife claimed to be in the dark. She had no idea. It was similar and turns out yes, she did. Its almost exactly the same, melissa. In that case Kathryn Russell was the wife. She was quite subservient as it appears from many reports this companion was quite subservient. With all the athames to see if they could press charges, the wife of the boston bomber did not meet up with any charges. I think here as well wendys point is well taken. This woman is the best clue, this and perhaps his phone and his computer, as to a motive, as to where he was in the time before this action, as to what exactly may have been going on. I think they need her cooperation and i think she will continue to give it. Melissa what could she have done that would be criminal . There is a long way from knowing and doing something that you can be arrested for. She got to have some kind of involvement. She apparently at least by all accounts had absolutely no idea. But heather makes a good point about the forensics and so do you. This man is different than almost all the other mass shooters weve had in recent years. He didnt have a digital footprint. Investigators are getting out from beiend their computers and doing good oldfashioned on the Ground Investigation talking to people that knew him. Once they put all that together and by the way the girlfriend can help locate other witnesses who are more objective and give those assessments to help us crack the case. It does not appear that charges will be forthcoming as far as she is concerned so far. Melissa the most important element at this point is going to be technology. Did he have a phone, did he have a computer . What does that show him doing . And financial records. Where did all this money come from . I for one dont understand how an accountant and former mailman could have millions and millions of dollars. You dont win gambling in vegas over the long term. The money and the knowledge, right, melissa . The things that he did, outfitting his car to be a bomb. Getting guns, putting the risers up. They take knowledge. One would imagine he got that knowledge perhaps through the internet. I would be surprised if he didnt somehow access some sort of Digital Technology in order to get some of this information. In addition, because he was such a high roller gambler we may have cameras showing his comes and goings that could lead to help. Unfortunately these things take time.
