A fired Government Official but thats what the president did just a little while ago. At bears looking at again, lets put that tweet back up on the screen. The president saying james comey better hope that there are no tapes of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press. The president is referring to a dinner that he had with james comey and two phone calls in which the president insists comey told him he is not under investigation in the russia case. Heres the president talking about those conversations on nbc. The dinner was arranged. He wanted to stay on as the fbi had and i said it will consider well see what happens, but we had a very nice dinner and at that time he told me you are not under investigation. He said it in a phone call and during another phone call he said it. He said it once a dinner and he said it twice and phone calls. The tweet of the president sent out this morning has to do with leaks to the press, but comey has also been invited to testify in a closed session and the Intelligence Committee on tuesday. We dont know whether he will accept that invitation and the president also taking aim at the russia investigation into eating when James Clapper himself and virtually everyone else with knowledge of the witch hunt says there is no collusion, when does it end . The president s tax attorney, Sherrie Dillon just a few minutes ago released this letter. This was requested by Lindsey Graham because he heads up one of the committees that is looking into all of this and he said just last week that he would like to look into the president s business dealings in russia. She said in this letter, with few exceptions, the president s tax return for the past ten years do not reflect any intel of any type from russian sources. The tax returns themselves were not released. According to the letter, here are some of the key findings. The president has no Equity Investment by russians and there is no debt owed by trump to russian lenders. He did make some money from the 2013 sale of the Miss Universe pageant and a florida property that he sold to a russian billionaire in 2,008,495,000,000. This letter also details that there may be some possible income describing the letter is immaterial. We learning a little bit more about what the president business dealings were in russia. He has long maintained that he made some money from selling the Miss Universe pageant and property to a russian and it would appear if you take this letter at face value that there is nothing other than that. The president trying very, very hard to get this russia issue off the table. Thats one of the reasons he fired comey, he felt the investigation kept making headlines when it probably should have been dealt with long before that. Jenna interesting. More to come, thank you so much. Jon President Trump defends his decision to fire fbi director james comey and a wideranging interview with nbc news. The president also discussed his perception that jim comey had mismanaged the bureau. Hes a showboat, hes a grandstand or. The fbi has been in turmoil, you know that, i know that, Everybody Knows that. You take a look at the fbi a year ago, it was in virtual turmoil, less than a year ago. It hasnt recovered from that. Jon lets go to Catherine Herridge come alive and washington. Thank you and good morning. The fbi director telling his side of the story. Telling the New York Times that the president asked mr. Comey for a pledge of loyalty at that dinner and the director offered only honesty. The anonymous source is referring to a dinner between the fbi director james comey and the president earlier this year. Its important to note that recent congressional testimony on may 3rd, republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary committee pressed mr. Comey on his media contacts. Director comey, have you ever been an anonymous source in news reports about matters relating to the trump investigation or the clinton investigation . Never. Question two relatively related, have you ever authorized someone else at the fbi to be an anonymous source in news reports about the trump investigation or the clinton investigation . No. Critics are voicing some concern about the New York Times this morning. They also point back to a recent profile of director comey which they saw as an effort to rewrite history before the dramatic events took place. Jon sounds like we have not heard the last. Catherine herridge, thank you. Jenna President Trump in his interview with nbc news reiterating the fbi director told him he was not under investigation. The president also saying the fbi had been in turmoil under james comeys leadership. Let me ask you about your termination letter to mr. Comey. Youre right i greatly appreciate you informing me on three separate occasions that i am not under investigation. Why did you put that in their . Because he told me that. Wasnt in a phone call . I had a dinner with him, he wanted to have dinner because he wanted to stay on. We had a very nice dinner. The dinner was arranged, i think he asked for the dinner. He wanted to stay on as the fbi had and i said ill consider, well see what happens, but we had a very nice dinner and that time, he told me you are not under investigation which i knew anyway. When youre under investigation, youre given all sorts of documents. I know i wasnt under and i heard it was stated at the committee at some point that i wasnt. Then during a phone call he said it entering another phone call he said it. He said it once a dinner and he said it twice during phone calls. Did you call him . In one case i called him and in one case he called me. Jenna lets bring benjamin hall. Were down to looking at phone bills. Generally, where do you think this story stands today . Theres many things to look at, but of what are you drooling on . First of all, if the goal of the present was to tempt down the investigation, it seems to have the opposite effect. Theres a lot more discussion than there was a few weeks ago and wheres it going now . Weve got to find out from this mornings tweets from the president , he talked about director comey should be careful about leaking to the press because he doesnt know if the president has made tapes of their conversations. Are there tapes are on their tapes . The tweet was pretty ambiguous on that point, but if there are, im certain investigators want to hear its on them. Jenna absolutely. As with the public at this point because its difficult to know who to trust. Who can we trust . There is no real definitive source on any of this. As we have all been trying for a long time to find out what the fbi knows, what does the senate Intelligence Committee no what is the house intelligence, those three avenues of investigations are going on, but for the most part, we havent seen much evidence. We were in when the we dont know the status of the charges and the president is right so far and that no one has come out and said he is directly under investigation. Senator grassley was pressing on that point just yesterday and didnt get a clear answer from acting fbi director andrew mccabe. Jenna youre so right to point out that despite all the talk, we are very light on facts when it comes to the actual investigation and where it stands between russia and the meddling into our election. As one of the reasons why i wanted to read part of this opinion piece to our viewers. The great tragedy is that too many voices are so rigidly and irretrievably antitrump. Opposed to him in every aspect of device or policy and Foreign Policy that it clouds their judgment. Mind you, it somewhat different. I think that trump a la carte is the only way to look at him. In this case, it is too soon to reach a definitive verdict, but heres my conclusion about this current controversy. Where there is no smoke, there is no fire. Let the smoke appear and we can and should we evaluate . That time has not yet come. What do you think about that . I think it speaks very much to how trump feels about this as well. Theres been no proof out there, can we just move on . One of his tweets today was one will list over . No one has found anything, no one has brought any charges, cant i get on with my presidency and the issues that i want to address for this nation . One can understand why he would want to move on, but there is the other side of this which is until we reach a conclusion and all of this, the investigations are ended or charges are brought somehow, we are going to keep wondering was there really smoke to go back to that article . Jenna getting back to the timeline, what is the timeline . Thats the thing, weve been hearing about this for many months already and we have many months to go. One thing we know from people that we talked to at wall street journal , prior o director comeys dismissal, he had been reaching out to rob rosenstein, the assistant debbie terry a general in charge of the fbi to get some new resources and weve been told hes been taking a much more active role. Theres really no way to know at this point. Jenna in the meantime, theres a whole host of other issues. The president has trips, health care, the economy, how do you think the story is impacting other big domestic stories that impact Everyday Americans . The president is trying to tempt down with his tweets today and redirect the narrative on that front. I do think we see signs at the white house wants to get on with his other agenda and has been derailed from these activities. There are two friends, they are battling on in that regard. They want to continue at their own agenda and make sure that it does become a distraction or eliminate or create some challenges, i should say, and the public trust. Which is one of the great risks when you have this narrative going on. Jenna bottom line, very light and facts when it comes to the investigation. I want to remind our viewers of that because we can talk all day about it and still, we are missing crucial facts. Great to have your perspective, thanks so much. Jon a russian fighter jet takes a pass dangerously close to a u. S. Navy aircraft this week. When it means for relations between the two countries and their militaries a day before a top russian official visited washington. Plus what we are learning about a shooting at an ohio nursing home that wounded an officer and at least one other person. I was pulling up here, drop my kids off at the babysitters. I heard a bunch of gunshots. I looked inside and there were a bunch people running out, my buddies like it, come in. Theres nothing traditional about my Small Business so when it comes to technology, i need someone that understands my unique needs. My dell Small Business advisor has gotten to know our business so well that is feels like hes a part of our team. With one phone call, he sets me up with tailored products and services. And when my advisor is focused on my tech, i can focus on my Small Business. Jenna a russian fighter jet flying dangerously close in the black sea. It came a day before russian Prime Minister met with President Trump. We thank him for making the trip to washington so we can continue our dialogue and our views that began in moscow. Jenna lucas is live at the pentagon with more. When we say dangerously close, how close are we talking about . That russian fighter jet came as close as 20 feet from the u. S. Navy aircraft in the black sea on tuesday. Moments ago, fox news has learned that fighter jet was armed with six surface air missiles under its wings. They told me the incident lasted about an hour and incurred a National Airspace and the black sea not far from crimea. Since that time, the u. S. Military has stepped up its fights in the region. In fairbury, russian fighter jets buzzed a u. S. Navy destroyer in the black sea has dozens of u. S. Army tanks and hundreds of american shoulders deployed to romania, not far away for a training exercise. There is no word jenna 2, and our is a long time. Muscles on that jet knowing that it was armed and significant progress the reaction from the pentagon . Just in this breaking news, officials are more alarmed now. Anytime you have missiles under a wing of an adversary which they called dirty, theres a lot of pause for concern and it follows a number of recent provocations in the region. These officials acknowledge that any time you have two russianamerican jets flying hundreds of miles an hour just 20 feet apart, they have the potential to become dangerous in a hurry. This latest provocation comes after fighter jets flew off the coast of alaska and a slight to becoming more and more routine as of late. You mention this incident came a day before the Russian Foreign minister arrived in washington. One more thing, the incident occurred just a day before defense secretary jim matus traveled to lithuania on russias doorsteps to reassure anxious nato allies. Jenna thank you, breaking news, appreciate it. Jon terrorism fears in rome to tell you about after a homemade bomb explodes outside a post office. When investigators are saying about the attack. Plus, our next guest was the first republican to call for an independent russian investigation. He joins us live. But first, mr. Trump on his decision to fire james comey. I was going to fire comey. Theres no good time to do it. You said i accepted their recommendation. I was going to fire him regardless jenna police in italy investigating an explosion that rocked a post office in rome. Please have a homemade device exploded between two cars parked near the building. The bomb was made and bottles filled with flammable liquid and set up by a trigger. Please say it wasnt designed to cause major damage. Officials do not suspect islamic terrorism. Jon another House Republican is now back and calls for an independent investigation into possible ties with russia and the Trump Campaign in the wake of the fbi directors dismissal. The president says the entire thing is fake news. This russia thing with trump and russia is made up story, its an excuse by the democrats for having lost an election that they should have one. Darrell iso was the first republican to call for an independent commission to investigate the russian matter. Hes a of the Foreign Affairs committee and the judiciary committee. Independent commission, is a need in mall than ever . I think the independence of both congress and their oversights and a careful review of the department of justice and the fbi and how theyre going forth with this investigation is critical. One of the challenges is this is complex, its going to take time, and we cant prejudge things. We are to follow the facts where they lead, that includes general flynn receiving a subpoena, there are documents coming forward. I am happy, not happy, im satisfied that attorney general Jeff Sessions recused himself and turned it over to a career professional, boy also to make sure thats done properly. Jon who would sit on this commission . I think thats one of the challenges. People talk about commissions, theyre talking about how do you get the equivalent of career professionals . Right now, i think the house and senate Intelligence Committees, judiciaries and others are looking and saying are we making sure that the fbi and the department of justice and the other agencies have the assets they need and are we sure theyre using career professionals . For now, thats the best way to move this investigation to get the facts and in the facts are coming in. Jon the fbi director, you have not been a big fan, at least of late of director comey, former director called me. Did he deserve to be fired . This is one of the challenges. There are multiple good reasons to fire the director going all the way back to the iphone scandal where he claimed it something that just wasnt true and tried to push the authority of the fbi far beyond where it had been historically. Certainly, the mishandling of a very public press conferences he did in the Hillary Clinton investigation led to democrats calling for his removal. People keep looking for a run reason for his dismissal rather than a series. Jon let me turn your attention to another issue thats kind of boiling across the country right now. Your fellow republican lawmakers took it from their constituents at town halls over health care. Where do you think ascendant is right now . Can you update us on drafting its new version of legislation to repeal in a place obamacare . I think the senate has an obligation to look anew at a couple of areas that we may not have done as much as we could. Obviously, we want to make sure we get it right on preexisting conditions, not just to cover them, but also to make sure that people do the responsible thing in their own lives and are held accountable for it. I think there are some additional good ideas that the senate can consider, one of them is offering every american the same health care that the federal workforce has. Thats something ive been promoting, but didnt get it to the house bill. I think the important thing that everyone has to remember is the option of doing nothing wasnt an option. The existing system was collapsing, a third of americans only had one choice, heading toward no choice under the Affordable Care act, so we did have to act and weve begun that process, but we have to continue this process and that we have to address the cost drivers of health care, liability reform, fixing the fdas feet of drugs to market, and frankly, making the nih, we gave them 2 billion more, we have to make them find those cures at a Cost Effective way sooner. All of these have dreamt of the cost of health care, which at the root is what americans need fixed. Jon if you are correct in saying that obamacare was collapsing or is collapsing, why do you think so Many Americans seem so angry about this attempt to repeal and replace it . Americans are angry because the cost of health care is going up. When you look at protesters, my own office, ive addressed them a couple of times in person, you get 500 people a week with an organized National Movement to get people to offices. Thats good, but it certainly not the 750,000 People Living in my district. The fact is, people are angry that health care is going up and cost, that they dont feel theyre getting access to their doctors and its not just people on medicare, medicaid, which are government programs, its people who see their private health care, their Employer PaidHealth Care Getting more expensive every year beyond their ability to afford it. Jon as this house bill thats not even law yet but seems to have been the trigger for so much of this vitriol. I just wondering why. The guns were loaded, if you will, by the left. No matter what we passed, no matter what or how much money was added back in to this modification, they were going to be happy with it. To be honest, i think members of the house both on the left and the right, we would like to have a be different, but we simply didnt have an option to do nothing. We had to begin the process of fixing a broken system. One of the interesting things as my old friend in ohio, john k sick, came out adamantly against the cuts. He never considered the fact that for every dollar that wasnt being taxed at a federal level, he could have added that same tax to the same people at the state level and actually ended up with more money. Even that cry was i sure would like other people to tax my citizens and offer a program so i dont have to honestly address the cost of health care. There are solutions, but those solutions all go back to the same thing. Weve got to drive down the cost of health care, we have to do it through innovation, weve got to do it through a lot of those and simply subsidizing it alone wasnt going to be a solution. The American People know that. Jon some other industrialized countries are better at it than we are. Theyre better at limiting viability, theyre better at rationing care. We can learn something from a single pair of states, but if you ask, would you like to have the same system as canada, most people say i want Something Better than canada and we have to help provide it. Its been for the record, i wasnt going to canada in particular. Republican of canada california. Thanks much. Jenna you love canadians. The idea behind this program is to get houses of worship to act as liaisons behind police so they can meet each other on a human level and resolve problems before they get out of hand. Jon that looks like a great program. Thanks for showing it to us. Jenna this weekend is mothers day and theres no Research Suggesting moms and dads, far from being distracted in the workplace, may actually make better employees. Our next guest has a new article called white mothering makes better at work. Writing, its time once and for all to debunk myths about motherhood. When a woman becomes a mother, she will be less receptive at work. One woman because mother, her career will suffer. The opposite is actually true. Amy henderson is the author, she is a working mom of three Young Children in the founding ceo. Im so curious about that. The opposite is true. What is the truth about motherhood in the workplace . The truth is that moms can actually outperform the nonmoms in their careers. Jenna how did you get into looking into this . I found myself unexpectedly pregnant with a third child, and i decided i needed to go on my own journey to figure out how they could both be a successful career woman and a good mom. While it was on the journey, i interviewed over 100 executive parents and i found that over 80 of them felt they were outperforming their former nonparent mom solves, not in spite of their kids. Jenna how do we have the perception of what motherhood will do to our careers . Its so true. To be honest, thats one of the things that sent me on this journey because i wanted to know whether the voices are heard in my own head were accurate, whether they were true, and what they were based on. I went on this long journey. I did all types of research to explain why it is that that bias is in our own heads and the environment in which we operate. And then to figure out the truth around it which is the exact opposite. To explain why, it has to do with the fact that we still operate under the ideal worker scenario as if there is a stayathome mom and a working dad. That stayathome mom has really High Expectations for what she is able do both at home and also in her childs life. We know longer operate in that model, only a quarter of American Families have a stayathome mom and a working dad. Jenna thats interesting. I cant help but think about some of the conversations i had at work. I remember i was six months pregnant, i was talking to an executive about my career and he said to me, what are you going to do . Have a baby in one hand and the microphone on the other . I thought, yes. Thats exactly what im going to do. Because i love the news and i love being a journalist. Again, i felt empowered and i walked out of the office and said good, i stood up for myself, but it was really terrified because i felt what happens if motherhood changes made . The truth is, two or three years later, two children later, i can say that motherhood has changed me for the better. Thats one of the things that you need to learn, but its very difficult at times. Im curious at the reaction of executives when you say listen, what you actually believe about motherhood isnt true. It was fascinating because i started off calling of the moms i admire to ask them how are you doing this . I was out on me with my third child. Its a bit of a grizzly picture. I was out on leave, i was so stressed about this, how is going to navigate motherhood and my career because im really committed to both. I started calling of these parents admired and these women i spoke to realized while they were talking to me that they are performing better in their careers because of their kids, not in spite of them. So many of them have been inundated with the negative messaging that was in my own head that they hadnt even connected the two. They have been so busy fighting is that bias like you heard that how are you going do both . I have found, now having walked this journey and founded a company which unlocks the power and potential of parenthood, which i cofounded, i found that actually there are so many capacities that we develop well parenting that apply to our careers and theres only things we learn in our careers that apply to our ability to be mom or dad and we integrate the two, weep outperform in both. Jenna it which is great. At the end of the day, we want our companies to succeed in the best way possible. Thats great. Very interesting concept. You go to companies, you teach them about different ways to integrate parenthood into everyday life. How is it being a mom of three . Im curious. Im so grateful for my third child which i was really stressed when i had her, but im so grateful for her because she forced us to look at what wasnt working and build a new path forward and thats benefited both my family and the companies that we work with and hopefully many more companies to come. Jenna i tell you, being a mom really does change you. One of the ways it also changed me as it made me a lot less tolerant for inappropriate comments towards women in the workplace. Thats in part from being a mother of a daughter. Great to have you in the program, we appreciate it. Good luck. Look forward to having you back. Thank you jon happy mothers day to all the moms out there. Passengers on one United Airlines flight getting a shocking surprise moments before takeoff. Jon a new hbo documentary takes an unflinching look at ordinary people torn apart by opiate addiction. Im going from one prescription into days and i call my mom crying and i said i dont know whats wrong with me. I cant stop taking these because when i stopped, i dont feel well. I said you need to talk to your doctor. She wrote me another prescription for percocet. It was stronger than the norcos that id been taking. Jon lets bring in the director of the new hbo documentary. Its called warning, this drug may kill you putting a human face on the u. S. Opioid addiction epidemic. It is an epidemic and its been underway for a year or two years . Its been underway for several years now. And only really became part of the public just a few years ago. We are up to 91 deaths a day and they believe that that number may be an underestimate because corners, there is a miss classifications of deaths and overdose. Jon fees are generally people who might get a prescription if they break a leg or something, they need some kind of a pain killer and they just get hooked . Its a great question. When we surveyed doing this, the narrative around this epidemic was its kids, theyre abusing good drugs that their finding and their parents or grandparents medicine chest. What we found is thats not really whats going on. This is not an epidemic of abuse, this is an epidemic of addiction. And the vast majority of cases, peoples initial exposure at the very least is coming from a prescription that they are getting from their doctor. I want to make it clear that these medications, opioid medications are good under the right circumstances. You have severe pain, youve had surgery, endoflife pain, cancer pain, these are appropriate medications in that setting, but for short periods of time. The problem is when you have a longterm chronic condition that youre taking this medication for, its a recipe for disaster. Jon some states are seeing the problem and far greater number than others, west virginia, the death rate is 43 people per 100,000. West virginia has been particularly hard hit. All of new england has been very hard hit. Jon why those places . As a great question, but its complicated, but it tends to be the overprescribing of opioid medication. Why are some doctors in some states prescribing more than others because mark is a company to question. Jon here opioid addiction using heroin. As not necessarily just heroin. Thats absolutely right. Heroin is in opioid. They are very similar and the effects they produce are indistinguishable. If you are somebody and youve been given oxycontin, lets say you had surgery and youve been given oxycontin and then you run out and you cant get another prescription which may be a very good thing. If you are addicted or dependent, theres a possibility that you will go to the legal form of the opioid which is heroin, which is easily available and very inexpensive. Jon the documentary is called warning, this drug may kill you. You can catch on hbo. Thank you. Jenna high drama and an ohio court room when a of five murder victims attacks there confessed killer. Phil keating joins us live from miami with more on this historic event. There wasnt an space curveball up there this morning, delaying the start of the spacewalk. The astronauts noticed a water leak on the connection point of jack fishers spacesuit and the space stations power and cooling system. That delayed them about 90 minutes2 hours. This historic spacewalk and support of the space station went on. Fisher and Peggy Whitson are about two and a half hours into the spacewalk which is not been cut down from a planned six hours to four or five hours. An avionics vase that supplies data electricity to the ongoing science experiments, they planned to also put a protective shield on the adapter where the new docking port will go for future commercial crew. As soon as next year, a crew could be flying up astronauts on americanmade ships ending our reliance on the russians. That job will likely be postponed to another day. The first spacewalk supporting the state station happened 80 and half years ago. 1998 back when there wasnt much at all and we still use space shuttles. Theyve been working so fast that they are now installing a cable to the spectrometer that collects data on raise. For Peggy Whitson, this is her ninth spacewalk and that also is a record for a female spacewalking astronaut. Jon that has got to be so cool. We hope it goes well for the astronauts.
